Gobble You Up
Pairing: EddieMunsonxReader
Summary: Visiting your parents for Thanksgiving and you show Eddie your old room. He takes the opportunity for more.
18+ only
Tumblr media
 You gave Eddie a reassuring smile as the two of you approached your childhood home. You had been dating for a few months now and he agreed to come home with you for Thanksgiving and meet your parents. You could tell he was nervous, he'd told you parents didn't tend to like him on sight, but you had no doubt he would win your mom and dad over. Your parents were not hard to impress.
Your mom threw open the door, beaming from ear to ear at seeing you back home, standing on her porch. She pulled you into a big hug and then immediately pulled Eddie into one too. He looked a bit surprised, eyes going wide. But then he smiled, his arms coming around the small woman, touched at her affection that she gave so freely. You knew his mom hadn't been around since he was a kid and it was probably a bit shocking to experience a mother's warmth when you'd only just met but that was your mom.
"I am so glad you two could make it!" she exclaimed. "You must be Eddie. We've been dying to meet you. Y/n talks about you non-stop on the phone."
"Oh, hopefully all good things," he said, his neck flushing from the compliment and he pulled at his collar slightly. He was just waiting for the ax to fall, for her to give a reason why he wasn't right for her daughter.
"You should hear her gushing about how wonderful you are," your mom laughed, pinching his cheek gently. "Sorry, just had to prove to myself that you're real. The way she makes it out, you're just about perfect."
Eddie laughed, his cheeks blazing red at the compliment. "I promise you I'm as real as they come. Thank you so much for inviting me."
"Of course! Anyone who makes our daughter so happy is always welcome. Come in!"
The two of you entered your childhood home, the home that hadn't changed since you were a kid. Eddie paused at the pictures of you through the years that lined the buffet in the entryway. He grabbed one of you as a child and held it out, smiling.
"You were adorable," he commented, clutching it to his chest, those lush lips pouting.
You rolled your eyes, "Shut up. That was when my mom cut my hair herself."
"Well, I think you're cute as a button," he said, his finger pressing gently against your nose. "Still are."
The same floral pattern couches sat in the living room that your mom bought when you were ten. And there was your dad's recliner with your dad in it, as usual. He rose up as soon as he caught sight of you two and pulled you close before offering his hand to Eddie.
"Good to meet you, son," he boomed, patting Eddie on the back.
"You too sir," Eddie responded nervously.
"Oh, no need for that," your dad laughed, "just call me Keith. You're practically family now the way our girl talks about you."
Eddie's eyes widened. "Wow. You guys are really welcoming. I have to admit, I was a bit nervous."
"No need to be nervous," your dad assured him. "You make our little girl happy and that's all we care about. You're more than welcome."
Eddie reached over and squeezed your hand, that dimple you loved so much appearing on his cheek. A warmth spread through you at how quickly he was made to feel at home because you knew this was where he belonged forever. It may have only been a few months, but you knew this was it for you. He was your everything.
"Y/n, why don't you show Eddie your room? You guys can relax for a bit after your long drive," your mom offered. "Your dad and I have to run to the store real quick to get a few things for dinner tomorrow and I want to make it there before they close."
"Oh, are you sure you don't want me to run with you mom?" you ask.
"No," your mom laughed, "you guys just got here. It was a long day for you. Just go on up and rest. I am sure you need it. We'll only be gone for about an hour or so."
Your parents headed out and Eddie glanced over at you. You could tell what he was thinking without him even having to say it. His eyes had darkened, a little smirk playing along his lips as he grabbed your hip, pulling you close against him.
"We have a whole hour to ourselves, whatever will we do to fill the time?" he teased.
You could already feel his excitement pressing against your lower belly and it flared white-hot desire in you. You slid your hands along his arms and up his shoulders, looping them behind his neck.
"Well, my mom did say I should show you my childhood room," you replied.
"I would very much like to see where your bed is."
You grabbed his hand, dashing up the stairs and pulling him behind you. Your bedroom was the second one on the left and you threw open the door, intending to shove him on the bed and rip off all his clothes but he stopped in the doorway, his hand tugging against yours.
He was gazing around your room, soaking in every detail. You looked around, trying to see it through his eyes. The blue comforter covered in daisies, the stuffed animals propped on a beanbag chair in the corner, the desk with the typewriter where you did all your homework in high school, the posters that covered your walls. Your mom hadn't changed anything since you'd left. Your train of thought was broken when you heard Eddie chuckling.
"Bon Jovi," he snorted, pointing.
"Shut up!" you snapped, glancing at your life-size poster of Jon that still hung on your wall. "Maybe Bon Jovi isn't metal enough for you but Jon is sexy as fuck."
"Ohh, is he now?" Eddie purred, slowly walking toward you. Grabbing your arm, he spun your body so you were facing the poster, your back pressed against him. His hands slid around to your breasts, massaging them through your top as his lips pressed gentle kisses along your neck. "And is Mr. Bon Jovi hotter than me?"
"No," you breathed, struggling to focus as his hands moved down along your abdomen, brushing the bare skin above your jeans. "No one is hotter than you."
"Good girl," he growled, nipping at the tender flesh on your neck and you cried out. His fingers nimbly undid your jeans, his hand sliding underneath your panties. "Did you used to lay in here and touch yourself while you looked at Jon?" His index finger found your clit, making slow, torturous circles. "Oh, you're so wet already princess. Is that for me or Jon?"
"You..." you struggled to say through the waves of pleasure that were sweeping you under. It was always the same with Eddie. You lost all sense of the world around you when he was touching you.
His finger slid along your folds, gently pushing inside of you and you gasped, bucking your hips against his hand. His other hand gripped your jaw, pulling your head to the side so he could have full access to your neck. A second finger joined the first, the rhythm of his movement picking up speed. A litany of curses and sounds no human should be able to create erupted from you.
"Mmm...is this just how you sounded when you lay in that bed touching yourself?"
"No," you whispered, "because I could never make myself feel as good as you do."
"That's right. No one can make you feel as good as I do," he responded, his fingers sliding out of you.
You whimpered at the sudden loss of him but then he grabbed your jeans, pulling them down your thighs and away from your feet, tossing them across the room. He placed his hands on your shoulders, pushing you until your back hit the wall.
"I know what I want for Thanksgiving dessert," he said, a wicked smile on his face as he dropped to his knees, hiking your thigh over his shoulder. "Mmm...gobble, gobble baby."
It was so ridiculous you wanted to laugh but then his tongue was on you, teasing along your clit, sliding along your folds, dipping into you and back out and you for anything else but the feel of him. Your eyes rolled back in your head as you lost all focus but you had to focus on keeping your one leg steady. It was the only thing keeping you from falling over. Your palms spread wide as they held the wall behind you, desperate for any support you could find.
"Jesus Christ Eddie..." you groaned.
His tongue swirled lazy circles around your clit before flicking at it rapidly. The sudden change in sensation was overwhelming. He continued this torturous pattern as his hands slid along your thighs and then his fingers were back inside of you, relentless in their pulsing.
"Fuck Thanksgiving dinner," he growled, sucking your clit in between his lips. "I just want to feast here all goddamn weekend."
One of your hands left the wall, the other remaining to hold yourself up. You buried your fingers in his hair, grinding yourself against his face, keeping him right where you needed him. He moaned against your pussy and the vibrations sent more waves of pleasure rocketing through you.
"Oh baby, I'm so close..." you moaned.
His tongue swept over your clit quickly, back and forth and then up and down. His fingers curved, rubbing against your walls in the exact perfect place to send you barreling over the edge. You screamed his name, shaking from head to foot, your leg giving out from under you.
Eddie caught you, sliding you into his lap and you sighed, resting your forehead against his shoulder. He pressed kisses along your cheek, nibbling on your ear, moving along your jaw, following a path to your shoulder. You could already feel yourself stirring again just at the feel of his lips along your flesh.
You grabbed his face, smashing your lips against his, gently pulling at his bottom lip with your teeth. He moaned against your mouth, gripping your ass in his hands. You stood up, him following suit, and feverishly worked on his jeans to get them off of him, quickly followed by his shirt.
Pressing your hands against his chest, you gave a sharp shove, sending him backwards onto the bed before crawling slowly over top of him, straddling his hips.
"Goddamn baby," he murmured, his eyes hooded with desire, his hands digging into your hips. "I like when you get feisty."
Smiling, you gripped his cock in your hand, sliding yourself along it but not letting it enter you. He cursed, his head falling back against the pillow, those beautiful mahogany waves splayed out like a mane. You slid the length of him all along your folds before allowing just the tip to slide past your entrance before pulling back.
"Jesus Christ..." he moaned, those fingers on your hips digging in so hard you were sure you'd have marks tomorrow. You didn't mind. Eddie had never truly hurt you, but you liked a little rough play. It gave you pleasure to wake up and see a little mark from his teeth or imprints from his fingers, reminding you that he was completely yours and you were his.
You slid the tip of him around your clit, using his cock for your own pleasure. Gripping him, your ran your hand up and down his length, allowing just the tip of him to enter you again before denying him once more.
"Shit baby, stop teasing me," he pleaded. "I need to be inside you now."
You slowly lowered yourself, taking all of him in. You moaned softly at how he completely filled you. Your hands gripped his shoulders as you began to ride him, propped on your knees as you lifted and lowered yourself on his cock.
"Fuck, you feel like heaven," he groaned, his fingers splayed wide over your hips, gripping them as he moved with you, bringing his own up as you brought yours down.
Your fingernails dug into his flesh and he hissed softly through his teeth. His hands slid from your hips, along your stomach, cupping your breasts. His thumbs began to brush over your nipples and you bit your lip, moving your hips in circles. This motion caused Eddie's cock to hit the most delicious places within you.
"Jesus Christ," you breathed.
Eddie gripped your hips again as he began to thrust up faster and harder. You gasped, gripping his chest for dear life as your body bounced vigorously with his thrusting.
"God, I love watching your tits when you ride me," he growled. "You look like a fucking goddess."
His thumb found your clit, stroking it as he continued to thrust. You arched your back, your hands moving to his thighs, whimpering as you moved closer and closer to the edge of sweet oblivion.
"Oh fuck, oh fuck, oh fuck!" you screamed, gripping his thighs for dear life as you rode out your orgasm, your whole body convulsing.
Eddie hand left your clit and grabbed onto your waist, steadying you as he drove into you even faster. His thrusts were causing you to feel like you might bounce right off of him. He screamed out your name as you felt his release.
"Jesus Christ..." he moaned, grabbing you and pulling you down on top of him. "Fuck, you are amazing."
"Mmm...you're pretty amazing yourself," you murmured, pleasantly numb from your head to your toes.
Eddie's hands grabbed your face, placing a gentle kiss against your lips.
"Well, I know what I'm thankful for," he said with a grin.

A Trinity Minus One (a free commission tale)
Tumblr media
My best friend was the one who showed me the Grindr profile that day. He was single and stilled used that garbage app. Looking at him still doing hook up culture, made me glad I found my boyfriend of five years. I was so lucky to find a hunky Latino guy. I might be a gringo, but I loved that we were so diverse. Then my friend with trepidation showed me on his phone a profile that showed my boyfriend locking lips with his coworker.
They both worked as mechanics and I thought they were just good friends. I never had a suspicion that José was gay or that he and my boyfriend Germán were hooking up. Much less hooking up as a couple on Grindr. But reading their shared profile, I felt the past decade hollowing into a tangle of lies and deceit.
"Latino couple looking for a bull. NSA. Make me watch you satisfy my boyfriend. No gringos, gracias."
My friend tried to console me but I left and spent the day crying in my apartment. My boyfriend and I shared the place, but he always worked late. Through my tears I saw the red flags: he never came back by dinner, preferring to eat dinner at work; he left early to get extra hours; and always made sure he looked good when he left. I wondered why he would put up with me then.
Tumblr media
I thought I was attractive. I was blond with muscle tone, but... no gringos. I guess I was just an apartment and a meal ticket.
I wanted to hate him. To hate them, but they looked so good together. After leaving my friend's place, I downloaded Grindr and stared at their profile. I had thought of messaging them, but... no gringos. I wondered who wrote that. My boyfriend or his? It didn't matter. I was nothing to them. And I actually wanted to be with them. I thought of José and he was hot and funny and charming. I could see why Germán would fall in love with him.
I just wished I could be someone they wanted.
I must have been dreaming because I felt the world around me shift and change. It seemed like the walls separated and fell away, the colors of nature lifted like watercolor and melted, and I felt myself lose the pain of the past hours. Then as swiftly as the world distorted, it returned to normal, except me.
I wished I could be someone they wanted. The loose definition of my body started to collect. It was a tightening of new and old memories. New smells and tastes of a childhood I never had. It was the new sounds of a language I only heard Germán speak. I wished... I stared at myself forming anew in the reflection of the mirror.
Tumblr media
My natural blond hair became a shocking platinum dyed crew cut. My white skin became a glowing bronze. Tattoos snaked down my arm, displaying a history on my skin that my old body lacked. My eyes turned sharper, more mature, more determined. The soft upbringing of my white childhood morphed into a struggle in an English-dominated culture. I looked at the naked landscape of my muscular body and felt a rush of hormones, but I wouldn't jack off yet.
Like stars in the sky, I still remembered my old life and could pick out outlines of what happened, though the glow of my Hispanic life was like the sun. I remembered Germán and José. I grabbed my phone and reopened the Grinder app.
While I was still nude with the sweat from the transformation, I took photos and made a profile. My name was Gabriel, like the angel. A second after my profile was made, I got a message from Germán.
"Holy smokes, bro, you're so fucking hot! You dtf?" He texted along with photos of his shirtless body and another of his cock that I had sucked the past five years in my old body.
I didn't feel like talking. I took a picture of my massive, dark cock and sent it to him. "Beg for it, puta."
"Please, please, papí."
I laughed and wanted to torture him some more. Show him more of this body, and tease him, but I remembered the love I felt for him, and simple wrote, "okay, mi amor, don't let me down."

You turned over on your bed so you were laying on your back, your head hanging off the edge. Moetini walked in.
“What up with you?”
“Am I crazy?”
“What?”
“If I just cut my hair and dyed it white? Would I be crazy?”
“Aren’t you the same one with a mom that screams about painting white roses red?”
You sat up. “Why does everyone only remember the crazy bits?”
You got up and grabbed the pair of scissors on your desk. Moetini looked on in shock.
“Oh, okay. We were serious about this?”
“I just, I want a new look. I’ve always done my hair like this on the Isle. I just want something different.” What you wanted to say was something not so Isle.
“Isn’t your hair already dyed and styled, just wear it naturally. That’d be different.”
Moetini wasn’t wrong. Your hair was naturally red but you always had it dyed by Dizzy.
“Nope, I’m doing this.”
“Are we sure… annnd we’re sure.”
You had already taken the scissors to your head and made a cut. It was too late to turn back now. You were getting a pixie cut and when it was done, you’d go across the way so Mal could make it white. After you came back from Mal’s room you looked in the mirror.
“Holy shit, Moetini. What did I do? Why’d you let me do that?!”
“Hey, girl, I tried to reason with you. I think it looks hot.”
“Yeah I am kinda hot aren’t I?”
Moetini rolled her eyes. “And there is the obnoxiously confident (Y/N) Heart. Glad to see you back, how did that five second vacation feel? You know, in Insecureland with the rest of us mortals.”
“Mmm, not great. Don’t think I’ll be taking another trip back.”
“You are insufferable sometimes, you know that right?”
~~~~~~~~~
Belle’s greenhouse was absolutely stunning. It was the first time you’d been out since cutting your hair. You kind of welcomed the coolness that a lack of long hair provided. Belle was already out into the main garden, one of the palace staff informed you.
“Hello?” you called out. You didn’t want to scare Belle by just appearing on her.
“Hey, (Y/N). Mom! (Y/N)’s here… woah.”
Ben was walking up from deep in the garden when he stopped. You subconsciously reached for a strand of air that was no longer there. Right. No one but Mal, Evie, and Moetini had seen the new hair.
“Hi.”
“Hi. Wow, new hair?”
“Yeah. Did it myself, with Mal’s help for the color.”
“It’s cool. Really works for you.”
“Thanks…” You ran a hand through your hair and then reached for the thorn strippers in your back pocket. “I brought my own tools.”
“Right, gardening. The roses are this way.”
You followed Ben towards the center of the garden where Belle was at work. She got up and wiped the dirt off of her hands before giving you a hug.
“You must be (Y/N).”
“Yes I am, Queen Belle.”
“Oh, just Belle is fine.”
“Trust me mom, titles are important to her.”
You rolled your eyes at Ben. “It’s how I was raised loser. I mean, Prince Loser. Can’t forget my titles.”
“Sure can’t Princess Rotten.”
“To the core.”
Ben laughed before grabbing his own tools and tending to the garden. Belle came back a while later with some refreshments.
“So your last name is Heart?”
You went on to explain your name to Belle the same way you did to Ben the first day you met. As well as other stuff about Wonderland.
“You sure know a lot about the place.”
“Mom and Dad had me read every book about Wonderland we could get our hands on. I think they hoped we could go back one day. I could probably walk through the whole place blindfolded and know exactly where to go to get to the Valley of Hearts.”
Ben and Belle got quiet. You felt it grow awkward all of a sudden. “So, is it cool if I could take a few of the roses back. I’m thinking of a bouquet for me and Moetini’s room.”
“Of course, dear. Take as many as you like.”
“Careful mom, she might take you seriously on that.”
“I’m not the one with the diamond credit card, that was your fault. Are you gonna help me with the roses or not?”
“Are you going to be okay with some white ones?” Ben joked.
“I swear you guys are asking for that beheading myth to come true.”
Ben helped you fill two baskets with roses. He carried one while you carried the other. You hugged Belle, thanking her once again for letting you tend to roses, before you and Ben headed back to campus. One of the roses fell out your basket. Ben picked it up and placed it behind your ear.
“You could’ve just put it in the basket… why are you looking at me like that?”
“You know…” you could see the evil smile forming on his face as his next words came out. “Most girls look pretty with flowers behind their ears… I just don’t see it.”
He laughed as you hit him with a rose repeatedly. You tucked the same rose you beat him with behind his ear. “Now we can be ugly stepsisters together.”
“I’m clearly the better looking ugly stepsister.”
“In your dreams. We both know I’m the better looking one of this pair. I even rock this haircut better than you.”
The bell rang as you two stepped up onto campus. “Shit, we’re about to be late. Come on Beastie Boy, let’s go.”
“The roses?”
“We’re taking them with us.”
“To class?”
“Yep. We don’t have time.”
The two of you strolled into class, quietly, but the teacher was nowhere to be seen. Ben slid into his seat next to Audrey, who didn’t look too happy to see you two walk in together. And you sat in between Evie and Mal, who both looked at you questioningly. Ben turned around and smiled at you, neither of you were caught.
“Prince Benjamin? Miss (Y/N)? Would you care to tell us why you were both late.”
You watched Ben’s mouth tight-line. Busted anyway. You took your rose basket and brought it to the front of the room.
“We were working on an Auradon Prep project and got a bit sidetracked. We thought all the faculty could use some reminders that the students here appreciate them. Here is a rose for you, white or red?”
“Oh, um. Red. That is very thoughtful of you two. Let’s just not make a habit of being late.”
“Yes, sir.” Ben spoke up from his seat.
You whacked Ben with a rose as you made your way back, now you had to give roses to the whole faculty. When the teacher turned around, he threw a rose from his basket at your face.
“I brought us flowers.” You set down your pitiful basket of only three white roses and four red roses on Moetini’s desk. “There were more.”
“So I heard. Nice lie. We’ll just use these two. That’s not enough for a nice bouquet.”
Moetini took two of the white roses. She put each in a small separate vase and set them on your windowsill, one near her side and one near yours.
“You might as well hand out the others.”
You went across the way and gave your gang a red rose each, threatening them that if they let the roses die before at least three days you would kill them. No one took your threat seriously but Mal assured you they would try their best to not kill the flowers. That just left one white rose.
You knocked on Ben’s door and waited for him to open.
“The bouquet was gonna look stupid.”
“I could’ve told you that. You were the one that came up with the lie and gave all the flowers away.”
“Well, you could’ve helped me.”
“You seemed like you had it covered.”
You gave Ben the most deadpan serious face you could. “Well, this one is for you. We had one left and since I guess you contributed to getting me roses…”
“You guess I contributed?” Ben leaned against the door frame. “I believe it is my garden.”
“I’m pretty sure it’s Belle’s garden.”
“My mother.”
“You want the stupid rose or not?”
Ben took it and placed it behind his ear. “Are you gonna admit that I’m the hotter stepsister, now?”
“Goodbye, Benjamin. I will see you tomorrow,” you said as you pushed him into his room a little.
“Admit it!” he yelled as you walked off.
“You wish.” You laughed as you walked off and headed back to your floor.
📖Chapter List.
Author's Note. This is the longest chapter yet! Just shy of 10,000 words!
Tumblr media
For the first time in forever, we're blessed with a slow day.
The sun crests over the clouds in the early afternoon, glazing the Greene house and its golden paddocks in a soft, buttery glow. Slow once meant boring, but now it means peace. My Dad's awake now, albeit bed-bound, but he's more or less as healthy as a horse. I don't need to keep glancing at his pale form anymore, watching for disaster. Not having that threat of death lurking around the farm makes the air feel so much clearer. I can finally relax a little. I think everyone feels the same relief. There's one less problem ready to strike at us.
Maggie lets me use the guest bathroom to take a hot shower in the afternoon.
After helping me tape a scrap of plastic over my stitches to ensure they stay dry, she lends me some fruit-scented shampoo and body lotion, assuring me she'll be right downstairs if I need anything else. I luxuriate under the warm water for some time, suds-ing up my dirty blonde hair and scrubbing the dirt form underneath my fingernails. I feel my muscles let go of all my tension in real time. It's the best feelin' ever.
I tweak the water off and step out onto the green bath-mat, face to face with my reflection in the mirror.
Last time I got a proper look at myself, I was dying in the back of the RV. I look at myself again; at my healthy, clean complexion.
"Hey," A girly voice calls out gently from behind the door — Beth, I think. "I got you a spare shirt, if you want. Is white your color?"
I look down at myself. "I'm more of a beige color."
She laughs. "No, silly. I meant... never mind. I'll leave it here for you."
After her footsteps recede down the corridor, I fetch the shirt, close the door, and hold it up in front of me. It's a tight, white blouse with frills down the front of it, and two, tiny puff-ball sleeves that each look a little like a lily-of-the-valley flower. I peel the plastic off my side and pull the shirt on — almost a perfect fit, but a little loose — combined with my blue jean-shorts, socks, and yellow rain boots.
I clomp back downstairs and into Dad's room, where he's trying to read a book he found in the bedside drawer, but failing.
It must be a romance. He hates that sort of thing.
I ask him if he wants to do my hair instead, and he agrees to the distraction right away.
With the window wide open to the smells of sweet pollen and farm life, I sit between his legs as he brushes my hair. I'm just so glad he's alright. He gives me two neat braids, ties them off with my hair lackeys, and then I ask Maggie for a pair of scissors so Dad can trim my bangs up a little. She's hesitant at first, but I tell her that my Dad's been cuttin' my hair since, well, I had any hair to cut, and that he's actually not half-bad.
She lends me some kitchen scissors, and I happily thank her.
I make myself comfortable on the bed, on top of a towel to catch the clippings, and I snack on a red apple as Dad cleans up my out-grown, wonky bangs. He tells me he's rusty, but he does a good job. They'd gotten long in our weeks on the road, but they look much better now.
After my hair's done, I kiss his cheek goodbye and head outside.
I find Carl over by the shed. He's playing on the swing that hangs from the burly tree growing beside it in a ray of sunlight.
"Hey, Harley." He greets me, digging his heel in the dirt to slow down. "Want me to push you?"
I smile, "Yeah, okay."
We exchange places, and he gives me a gentle push.
I can see Rick over by the tents, talking to everyone. He's probably sharing the disappointing news that it really was Shane that shot my Dad, so that everyone's on the same page. We're not supposed to tell the Greenes about this discovery. We need to make a good impression, and having a trigger-happy murderer in our group ain't the best way to achieve that. It's better if they continue believing it was Otis that caused all this, otherwise we're gonna get booted to the streets again. I never wanna go back to living that way. We need this place, for Sophia.
I don't wanna talk about Shane, so I won't bring him up.
Nobody's told Carl about any of it, anyway.
"I didn't even know this swing was here." I say as I enjoy the breeze on my freshly washed skin. "This is just like the one I used to have."
"I never had a swing." He muses as he pushes me again. "I miss playgrounds."
"Betcha don't miss school, though."
"Eugh. No." He exclaims. "My Mom still makes me do homework sometimes. It sucks."
I remember doing all those spelling quizzes and math problems back at the quarry. I don't miss it one bit.
I ask him, "What grade was you in, before?"
What grade 'were' you in, Lori would correct me, not 'was'. It always annoyed me when she did that.
"Sixth." He answers. "What grade were you in?"
"I was in second grade."
"Second grade?!"
"Yeah. What grade did you think I was in?"
"I dunno. Five, maybe?"
"I'm eight." I giggle. "You're twelve. We can't be in the same grade."
"But we're friends." He counters. "I've never been friends with someone outside of my grade before."
"Well," I sing-song, "Now you have."
"Even my cousins were the same age as me."
"Mine were all older."
I haven't thought about my cousins in forever. They're all on my Momma's side, from her two brothers. There was Vicky and Tobias, the twins. They were super old. Like, fifteen. Then there was Hunter, and Lillian, and Georgia. I miss them the most. They always treated me nice.
I've never had friends or family younger than me before. I've always been the baby. Even here, that still hasn't changed.
As I'm gazing out onto the distant cornfields, swinging back and forth relaxingly, Maggie approaches us with a friendly wave.
"Hey, y'all." She smiles. "Havin' fun out here?"
We both notice her, and answer, yeah, at the same time.
"Who built this swing?" Carl asks her. "It's awesome."
"My Daddy built it, a long time ago," Maggie fondly says. "When I was just a little girl. Nice to see it gettin' some use, again."
"I reckon I could touch the sun." I hum to myself, looking at the sky.
She chuckles. "Don't go testing that theory. Your Dad would kill us all."
"You wanna play with us?"
"I actually wanted to ask you guys somethin'. I heard from Daryl just now that you found a walker in one'a our wells today?"
Oh, yeah. That ugly thing.
Carl corrects, "Technically, I found it."
I roll my eyes. "Don't be a smart-ass."
"Hey. That's a swear word."
"It's fine. My Daddy don't care 'bout swears."
"I was just wondering which well it was." Maggie interjects. "We've got quite a few around here, and I don't wanna search them all."
"Oh, it was the one near the barn." Carl says, pointing in that direction.
I ask her, "What are you gonna do with it?"
"I talked to Rick about it, and we reckon we're gonna try using a winch to pull it out. Can't have it dirtying up the water."
"What's a winch?"
"It's like a really long, metal rope you can attach to a car." She explains. "We've had ours for years, and luckily for us, it hasn't rusted."
I bring myself to a stop, widening my eyes. "Can we come watch?"
"Yeah!" Carl enthuses. "Can we?"
"Sure ya can. I don't see why not."
With a small cheer, we abandon the swing and follow Maggie across the field, rambling about all the gross stuff we think is gonna happen.
Everyone pitches in to help clear the well, except for Shane. He's off somewhere, brooding.
At first, we try dangling a chunk of canned ham over its head to see if that'll get its attention, but since canned ham don't bleed, kick, or scream when you bite into it, the walker doesn't want anything to do with it. We realize we'll need live bait, and for some reason, everyone's eyes fall onto Glenn. He thinks that's super unfair, but he is all better now, and he does have the fastest reflexes out of all of us.
"Have I mentioned that I really like your new haircut?" He smiles lopsidedly at me, thinking I'll save him. "Really suits your face."
"Don't worry about it." Rick reassures him. "You'll have four of us on the rope. We're gonna get you outta there in one piece."
"One living piece." He emphasizes. "The living part's important."
Dale drives over the car they're gonna use for the process, while Andrea retrieves a thick coil of rope, making Glenn go pale at the sight of it.
Rick and Jacqui start wrapping it around his body.
"We'll give you the winch." Rick says. "Just try wrappin' it around its neck."
He sighs in defeat, "Let's get this over with."
As soon as he's in the well, he's screaming bloody murder.
If not for the suspenseful atmosphere, it would be super funny. Me and Carl watch from the sidelines as Rick, Maggie, Andrea, and T-Dog work together to lower Glenn into the well with nothing more than a rope looped around his midriff to keep him from falling to his death. Dale sits in the driver's seat of Maggie's Subaru, waiting for the signal to start reversing. There's a mechanical lookin' thing attached to the bumper. It looks like a garden hose, but it's made of metal. It must be the winch. The end of it leads into the well.
"You people are crazy!" His disembodied, terrified voice shouts from below. "This is crazy!"
"We got you!" Andrea calls out.
Rick grunts, "Give us an eye, Maggie."
At the front of the line, Maggie peers in. "Doin' okay?"
"Can't believe I'm saying this," His wimpy voice echoes, "But I need to be lower."
"Lower." Maggie parrots.
They all shuffle forward a couple steps — a couple too many steps, apparently.
"Higher!" He shrieks. "Higher!"
The rope strains against the cobble as it's tugged again, backwards this time.
I chew my fingernail nervously.
"Can you get it around that thing?" T-Dog asks, sweating. "Sometime today, please?"
"Fuck you!"
Me and Carl exchange glances, biting down shocked giggles. This is the first time I've ever heard Glenn say, Fuck.
"How's that now, Glenn?"
He takes some time to answer, grunting, "Living the dream, thanks."
"Just get the winch around its neck." Rick coaches calmly, "Easy as pie. Then clip it onto itself, and it should secure."
We wait with bated breath as he wrangles the walker.
After about a minute, he calls out again.
"That's it! It's on! Pull me up! Pull me up!"
"Get him up!"
"Pull! Pull!"
"Come on!"
They wrestle with gravity to lift him back out the well, struggling in unison as Dale reverses. The winch immediately pulls taut. It creaks loudly, mixing with the sound of the engine and Glenn's panicked screaming to create the worst, most cacophonic song I ever head, and I've had to listen to my Dad's favorite music all my life. We cheer them on anxiously, watching closely in anticipation. The grass begins to split under their boots from the force. Just as the rope is about to give way, T-Dog gives one last powerful tug.
"That's it!" He says, "Come on, grab him!"
Glenn scrambles over the lip of the well, panicked, as me and Carl rush forward to help everyone pull him out.
"You okay?!" I ask him.
"God, get me out." He cringes. "Get me out."
As he lands on his ass, soaking wet from being splashed, the walker is next in line to be pulled from the depths.
It gets caught on the edge of the wall like a thousand-pound pinata.
"More force!" Rick orders.
Dale stomps on the gas, making the tyres squeal.
"Come on, you ugly thing." He goads. "Come on."
As the winch begins to cut into the walker's neck, the growling is hitched suddenly, replaced by choking.
Its eyeballs bulge under the pressure.
The engine revs once more, and Rick ushers us out the way. "Get back! Get back!"
All of a sudden, the well cracks and breaks apart around the walker's fat body as it's dragged out onto the grass. Rick's on it before I can even blink. He unsheathes his knife and sinks it into the mushy, water-logged skull with a satisfying squish. At last, the darn thing goes limp.
We all catch our breaths as he stands.
Dale turns off the engine.
"It's uglier in the sunlight." Carl muses, revolted.
No doubt about that. It's disgusting.
Eventually, Glenn deadpans a celebratory, "Anybody thirsty?"
There's a weak chorus of laughter amongst us.
I stand next to Dale and Glenn, watching as Rick and T-Dog drag the walker off the property.
"You know," Dale ponders aloud, "Did they ever mention how that thing fell down there in the first place?"
Mmm... Nope.
No, they didn't.
"This whole farm is fenced off." He continues, thoughtful. "How could a big thing like that just wonder in?"
"Maybe it's been there since before the fences." Glenn guesses. "They might've put them up after everything."
"No," Dale hums. "I was talking to Herschel about it yesterday... He said it was all built in the seventies and they do maintenance every month."
The walker is silently dumped on the ground.
All Dale muses is, "...Strange."
"And then it exploded!!"
My Dad's eyes widen.
"Just kiddin'," I giggle. "Rick stabbed it in the brain."
"I was gonna say." He scoffs. "Explodin' walkers? That'll be the day."
Dad missed out on the action of the well today, so I decided to recount the whole thing to him after. I left out the part about Glenn screaming like a baby goat, though, 'cause I think he'd appreciate that. He's already got enough humiliation for a lifetime with the whole jerky fiasco.
"You really believed me?" I grin, shaking my head. "Actually, I ain't surprised. If you believe in chupacabras, you'll believe anythin'."
He smirks, "Watch yer mouth, girl."
"Whatever." I keep giggling. "I gotta go now, Dad."
"See ya later, baby. Stay where people can see ya."
Carl uses the situation to convince Rick to let him carry a gun. I don't know why he wants one so bad, but he sure is stubborn.
"What if another walker gets in?" He needles. "I need to be able to protect myself."
"Under different circumstances, I'd consider it." Rick explains. "But for starters, I promised Herschel no firearms on his property."
"But—"
"I've also been reassured that this was a one-time thing, Carl. Nothing else is getting onto this farm anytime soon. You don't need to worry."
"I'm not worrying." He argues. "I'm just tryna be smart, like you guys."
"You are smart. I know you are. That's why you're gonna let this go."
With a great big groan, Carl rolls his eyes.
From over by the campfire where he's polishing his pistol, Shane throws in his two cents. "Might not be a bad idea, Rick."
He looks over at him. "What?"
"You know we're both certified instructors. Plenty of land 'round here that ain't Herschel's. We could set up a shooting range, see how it goes."
I scoff hearing that, anger rising up inside me.
"Yeah, you'd know all about shooting things, wouldn't you, Shane?" I snarl sassily.
There's a very stiff, very awkward pause between us all. It's lucky it's just us around, and not any of the Greenes. I guess I wasn't thinking, but when my temper flares up, I never think before I speak. That's how you know I'm my Dad's daughter, I suppose. Shane stares at me like I've just slapped him sideways across the face. I glower at him; a seething, hurt look I've never directed at him before, one I know will pain him. He knows he's broken whatever it was he'd built between us with this stunt. He's damn right I don't wanna be his friend anymore.
It's so frustrating that we all know what he did, but none of us can do anything about it. He gets away with everything.
At least I can hurt him with words.
Rick sees that I'm getting angrier by the second and puts a comforting hand on my back.
"Huh?" Carl asks, confused. "What do you mean?"
"Carl." Rick warns.
"No, I wanna know. What did you mean?"
"He shot my Dad, is what I mean." I exclaim, heated. "He was gonna leave him out in the woods to bleed to death. Ain't nothin' more than a murderer."
Carl's gaze snaps onto Shane, a look of betrayal skirting over his features.
"It was you?"
"Carl, it's already been discussed." Rick tries calming him down. "What's done is done. It's over."
"Why'd you do it?"
"Listen, buddy," Shane placates, for some reason looking at me when he does. "Sometimes things just happen. Heat of the moment."
"Weren't no 'heat of the moment'." I shout. "You followed him through the woods for hours!"
"I didn't—"
Carl taunts, "You gonna shoot my Dad next?"
"This is gettin' outta hand." Rick intervenes, standing up from the picnic table. "Come on. Let's go cool off. Both of you."
"I hate you." I call out to Shane as I'm pulled off the bench. "I fucking hate you!"
He doesn't even have anything to say. There's nothing he can say. He ducks his head, unable to look my way, and once Rick gets himself in my line of sight, I can't see his guilty expression anymore and I don't care to. I shove Rick off. He respects that I don't want him crowding me so much and opts for just holding my hand, instead, telling me everything's alright. My eyes well up, lip wobbling. I hate people seeing me cry, but Rick's probably seen Carl cry a whole bunch of times. I don't need to be too embarrassed. He would never judge.
He guides us both toward the side of the house.
"Here." He gently says as we approach a trough of clean water. "Wash your face off a bit. It'll feel good."
"I can't believe you didn't tell me." Carl frowns. "Were you ever gonna?"
I splash some water onto my already wet cheeks, catching my breath.
"Shane's been with us for a very long time." Rick confesses, "I didn't know how to break somethin' like that to you, but yes, we were going to."
"What does Mom think?" He pouts.
Rick nods. "She's disappointed."
I dry my face off with my shirt, mumbling pettily, "Murderers go to prison, y'know. They don't just sit around, cleanin' guns."
"What are you gonna do, Dad? Is he just gonna stay here?"
"Do you want him to?"
Carl seems torn on how to answer. "W—Well, yeah, but you don't usually get to choose, right?"
"We do now." Rick tells us both. "Lots of people make mistakes. Shane's definitely made a mistake by doin' this. I recognise that. But things are different. We need each other to survive out here. We need this place to survive. Putting that at risk will be hurting us, too."
"He's sorry, right?"
Rick doesn't know how to answer that one.
"I hate him." I sniff, miserable. "I can't look at him no more."
He gives me sympathetic look, rubbing my back.
"We can't kick him out." Carl worries. "He's our family."
Everybody is someone's family. My Dad's a murderer, and he's my family. That's why I forgive him. I guess that's why Rick, Lori, and Carl forgive Shane, too, even though they're angry like I am. I wish I could have that gene for moving on, but I just don't. Shane ain't my blood.
"Things are weird right now." Rick admits. "I know. But we just have to stick through it for a while."
"Until when?" I demand. "When's it gonna be okay that he tried to kill my Dad?"
"Never." He appeases. "You have every right to be upset with him. I just want to secure our place here, first."
"How you gonna do that?"
"I'm going to talk to Herschel tonight."
"And then what?" I spit sarcasm. "My Dad can have at him?"
"It's tricky, Harley. I can't kick Shane out. I can't kick you an' your Dad out. I can't have you around each other. There's no good option, here."
"When my Dad's all better, he's gonna kill him." I grind out. "That's a good option."
"No, Harley, it's not." He sighs patiently. "Two wrongs don't make a right."
"Why the Hell not?"
"Because I will not allow murder within the camp. That's a line we do not cross. Ever."
"Then kick Shane out!" I scream in his face, as if that'll make him listen better, turning on my heel and storming away.
With anger coursing through my veins, I search the farm for Shane.
He made himself scarce after Rick forced us to give him some space, but I'll find him. I don't know what I'm gonna do once that happens, but the first step is to find him. Maybe I'll shout at him. Maybe I'll punch him in the face. Yeah, that's good. I'll do that. I'll break his nose, just like my Daddy did. I ask Jacqui if she's seen Shane anywhere, and then I ask Andrea, and Beth, and even Jimmy. They all give vague, unsure answers, but they all mention the direction of the back gate, so that's where I go. I'm an arrow, soaring toward its target.
Sure as shit, I find him on the outskirts of the farm. He's sitting in the neglected, tall grass, staring out onto the distant sunset.
When I see him rub the heel of his palm over his eye, I realize he's crying.
I approach him from behind, not caring how loud my raging footsteps are.
When I'm within ten feet of him, he starts to turn around, sighing, "Rick, listen—"
"It's me!" I shove him harshly, surprising him. "And yer lucky it is, 'cause if I was him, I'd kick you out right now!"
Shocked, he faces me with wide, wet eyes.
"Scratch that, I'd kill ya!" I seethe. "Just 'cause my Dad survived, don't make you any less of a murderer! That's what you are!"
"Harley—"
"I don't wanna hear nothin' you have to say, no more." We're nowhere near the main part of the farm. From here, the house looks like a miniature. The sky is open wide. I can scream all I want, and nobody will be the wiser. "I don't care. You can't say sorry for somethin' like this! Everybody knows what you did, Shane! Rick knows, Carl knows, Lori knows, I know!" My voice cracks. "I gotta live with it! With you!"
I don't care that he's been crying. He could cry an ocean of tears, and I still wouldn't care.
"When my Daddy comes for you," I shout, "I won't stop him. Ya hear me? I won't!"
As soon as my Dad's better, this place will become a hunting ground. As long as one of 'em is alive, the other won't stop 'till they're dead.
A flash of violence glints over his eyes when I say this. This was never his plan. If he had things his way, not only would that bullet have gone straight into my Dad's head, but I'd also probably be mourning in his arms right now, letting him replace what he'd made sure I'd lost.
"I did what I did for you." He snarls, offended. "I did it to protect you. You think this is what I want, Harley?"
"I know it's what you want. You're a fucking murderer."
"Yeah? I want my best friend lookin' at me like he doesn't even know who I am, anymore? I want you tellin' me that you hate me?" His lip curls around his biting words. "That's what I want? I'll let'chu in on a little secret, here, Harley. I don't. This is Hell for me, too!"
I shove him again, but he doesn't retaliate. He takes it; deserves it, even.
"You can't protect nobody!"
I smack him again.
"Nobody!"
"Harley—"
"I was your friend!"
"Fuck!"
I punch him square in his stupid face.
He grunts under the sheer impact, his hand going to his nose. He pants, dumbfounded. His fingers come away wet, red; bloody. I stand there, huffing and puffing, my knuckles sore, as he looks up at me like he doesn't recognise me. His eyes are wide pools of incomprehension. I-I just punched him. I have never in my life punched an adult, before. It feels good. It feels really, really good. It feels better than just washing my face off, that's for sure. Sometimes, two wrongs do make a right. I know, 'cause I'm starting to grin, now. Rage, to me, feels like a medicine.
He gulps, blood trickling down into his gaping mouth. He frowns lightly at me.
"That make you feel better?" He asks without venom, as if he's genuinely curious; as if he's got an idea.
"It did." I breathe. "Made me feel a whole lot better."
He pauses.
Then, he mutters, "Do it again."
"What?"
"Hit me again." He shuffles onto his haunches, presenting his bloody face to me like a prize. "Hit me again, Harley. Do it."
I hesitate at first, not believing this is really happening, but then I see that he's serious. He cups his hands around both his knees, ready to be my punching bag. He raises his chin; takes a deep breath. For once, this isn't a trick. This is plain, raw indulgence. The slithering delight of violence is all mine to take. I feel it building up inside of me again, fighting to be let out. I slowly curl my fist again, rearing it back into the air.
I bring it down onto his face again with a dull, painful thud.
He straightens again.
I lay into him for a third time, and a fourth, and a fifth. I think of Dad's unconscious body, the sound of the gunshot, and the way he was tip-toeing alongside death for three whole days. I think about how Shane almost took my Dad away from me forever, and I make him hurt.
By the time I'm done with him, his cheek is already turning an ugly green-brown color, bright blood smeared across his chin.
That's the best thing I've done all week.
He sits back down in the grass, adjusting his jaw, groaning, "Where'd you learn to hit like that?"
"My Dad." I pointedly spit. "Taught me to punch people who are mean to me."
He chuckles weakly, accepting my punishing words instead of arguing. "Well, you got me."
"This don't change nothin'."
"I know it doesn't." He pants. "No matter how many times you hit me, you're Dad's still a fuckin—"
"I told you I don't wanna hear it."
"A fucking asshole." He finishes. "Hell, he's no better'un Ed was. You— You wanna know the difference between him an' me?"
I refuse to answer, glaring at him.
"I have never hit you." He says, knowing I can't argue with a fact. He's infuriating, that way. "Hate me all ya want, but... I've never hit you."
We stay like that for a strangely painful and gaping moment, face to face with each other's honest presence.
In the distance, we hear people calling for me.
He sniffs wetly, bringing his shirt up to clean his face. "Best you get back, now."
"Harley, where'd you go?"
"Harley!"
"Harley!"
As a parting goodbye, right before I walk away, I mumble, "You can't protect nobody."
He doesn't come back to the farm until after dinner.
Rick's a little angry when I return to the farm, but he hears me out.
"I just went on a walk," I fib, hiding my bloody knuckles. "To calm down."
"Are you alright?" Lori fusses.
I smile. "Yeah, I'm... I'm really good."
They glance at each other, but it looks like the matter is already settled.
"Come on, then." He sighs. "Dinner's almost ready."
Lori grabs my clean hand and leads me toward the house.
"You need to reconsider." Rick comes out and says that night, helping the Greenes clear the dining table.
Herschel frowns, "I beg your pardon?"
"Asking us to leave." He sets the dirty dishes down in the sink, and then turns to face him, his arms crossed. "You need to reconsider."
At least he wasn't lying, I think to myself as I finish off the last of my peas. This is him following through on what he promised me he'd do.
"If you saw what it's like out there," Rick continues, "You wouldn't ask. You're a man of belief. If you believe anything, believe that."
"You're putting me on the spot, here, Rick."
He doesn't back down.
"Well, I mean to. Those people out there look to me for answers. I wish they didn't, but they do. That includes Harley."
Herschel glances at me, a soft look in his eyes.
"After everything that's happened," Rick doubles down, "The least you can do is reconsider."
"You're a plain-spoken man."
"I'm just doing what's best for my people." He humbly says. "We've been to Hell and back these past few months. This whole journey started for us when Harley got scratched by one of the dead, right in the beginning. We honestly believed that we were going to have a child's blood on our hands. You don't forget somethin' like that. I know I won't. I know her father won't, either. Now I fear the same thing might happen with Sophia. I know you're a man of good morals, a man of faith. You got two girls of your own. If you kick us out when Daryl's better — before we can have a good chance at finding Sophia — Then this time, I'd say the blood will be on your hands. Not ours."
Herschel is confronted by his words, glancing over at Beth and Maggie, the apples of his eye, as they clean dishes together.
"Will you consider my request?"
"There are... aspects to this." Herschel says. "Things I can't and will not discuss. But if you and your people respect my rules... I will reconsider."
I try not to let my excitement show on my face.
Rick smiles. "We will. You have my word."
Herschel nods. "And you have mine."
Dad's still reading the book when I go into his room that night and change into my pyjamas.
"Dad, guess what?"
He hums.
"Rick got Herschel to think about lettin' us stay longer." I smile, stepping into my sleep shorts. "We might not have to leave."
He lowers the book at that, a sceptical look on his face. "He did?"
"Yeah." I pull on my shirt and hop on the bed, taking out my braids. "You know what that means?"
"What?"
"Shane can get punished, and the Greenes won't care."
As I move onto the second braid, content with this development, I don't notice my Dad looking over me, a dark look in his eyes.
"Baby?"
"Yeah?"
"What's that?"
He grunts as he sits up slightly, reaching out to grab my wrist. I look down at it, only now noticing a tiny speckle of Shane's blood on one of my knuckles. Damn it. I thought I got it all off when I washed my hands this evening, but I must've missed a spot. I lick my thumb and wipe it away.
My gaze averted, I confess, "I punched Shane today."
"You what?" He scolds harshly.
"I punched him a whole heap of times, actually." I say somewhat proudly. "He let me. He said it would make me feel better."
He looks like he wants to strangle something.
He demands, "Who else was there?"
I realize I might actually be in trouble for this, and I mumble, "Uh... No-one."
"Fuckin' Hell, Harley." He groans, rubbing a hand down his face. He drops it, revealing a deep frown. "You stay away from him, okay?"
"But, you said—"
"Don't back-talk me, girl. You know what he's capable of, and ya still went and talked to him."
"I wasn't nice to him, Daddy. I promise. I was real mad."
"A guy like that, it don't matter." He insists. "He gets in ya fuckin' head, Harley. He already has. Do not do that shit again. Ya hearin' me?"
"Yes, Dad."
"Creepy piece'a shit." He grumbles to himself as he sits back, taking a deep breath. "You remember what I did to Ronnie?"
Chewing my lip, I murmur, "Yeah."
"And how you weren't scared of me, after?"
"Uh-huh."
He nods. "Well, keep that in mind."
"Why?"
"'Cause I told you to. Now, c'mon. Time for bed." He lifts up the covers for me, and after blowing out the candle, I wiggle myself in beside him. This will be our last sleep in the house. Herschel reckons Dad will be able to walk tomorrow, and after that, we're gonna get kicked outside with everyone else. I don't mind. I can't wait to sleep under the stars again. Once I'm comfortable, he offers, "You want me to sing you to sleep?"
I nod, closing my eyes.
His soft words begin to fill the quiet room, a pretty echo of an old life.
"Hush little baby, don't say a word... Daddy's gonna buy you a mockingbird."
"He-lloooo, farmer's daughter."
The next morning, I send Glenn an unimpressed look from my seat on the porch.
"Gross, Glenn."
He continues peering through his binoculars at Maggie as she rides up the road.
I roll my eyes and go back to eating my small breakfast of peach jam on toast.
They're going on a run today. Between me, T-Dog, and my Dad's injuries, the painkillers and antibiotics have run out pretty quickly. He's gonna try walking today, so he'll definitely need them more than usual. They're going to check out a nearby pharmacy for more. I asked if I could go with them, but Rick, Dad, and Lori all answered me with a synchronized scolding of, No, so that idea's out the window.
As Lori comes up the porch steps, Glenn startles, trying to hide his obvious spying.
"Oh, h-hey, Lori. Nice morning, huh?"
She raises a brow. "I'm not even gonna ask."
"You got the list?"
"Yeah. Here it is." She hands him a crumpled slip of paper, glancing around, lowering her voice. "And there's one other item on there."
He unfolds it, reading down the scrawled words.
"I wrote it down separately. It's personal. If we could be real discreet about that, okay?"
When he makes it to the bottom, his eyes go wide.
"Uh, s-sure." He promises. "I just need to know where to find it."
"Try the feminine hygiene section."
His cheeks go a little pink, but he nods, "Consider it done."
"What is it?" I nosey.
"Just some lady products." She brushes it off, taking a seat beside me. "Don't worry about it."
Glenn mutters, "Can I ask... Whose—?
"No." She chides.
He nervously gives up on his question. "O-Okay."
Maggie makes it to the front of the house, leading another horse alongside hers for Glenn. He quickly snatches up his backpack and rifle, heading down the steps. We watch as he clumsily mounts the saddle with some coaching from Maggie, which makes us both giggle.
He gets it, eventually.
As they trot down the path together, Lori gives me an amused look. "He's totally sweet on her."
I scrunch up my nose. "Don't put me off my food."
"Sorry," She laughs.
Later in the morning, I join Andrea on the roof of the RV as she stands watch.
Looking through her binoculars, she mutters to herself, "What is he doing?"
I frown. "What is it?"
She hands them to me, and I peer through the lenses in the direction she was facing, met with the peculiar sight of Dale on the border of the farm, kicking a fence post. He continues along the line, giving the next one a firm shake. I lower the binoculars, mildly entertained.
"I think he's investigating." I snicker to myself.
"Investigating?" Andrea looks at me, confused. "Investigating what?"
"He thinks something's up with the fences." I tell her, watching his distant figure move onto the next one. "I guess he means to find out what."
She laughs. "He's gonna break a toe if he's not careful."
I've never known anyone nosier than Dale Horvath.
In the afternoon, Glenn and Maggie return with everything on the list.
Dad insists that he don't even need the painkillers, but he gets forced by Maggie to take 'em, anyway. We wait half an hour for the pills to kick in, and then after some more arguing from Dad's end about how he can do it on his own, he yanks the IV needle out his arm and scoots onto the edge of the bed. With some effort and a few heavy grunts, he manages to get onto his feet, wobbling only slightly.
I cheer him on, making him smile a little.
We trail him out onto the back porch, hovering nearby in case he falters, but he stands strong the whole way.
He breathes in the fresh air. "Almost forgot what real life smelt like."
I pace around the house with him as Maggie and Glenn clear out all evidence of him ever existing in the guest room.
Herschel checks him over one last time and gives him the official green-light to return to life as usual.
We all spend about half an hour pitching a tent and driving over all our chairs, rucksacks, and other belongings to a nice spot on the far reaches of the property, under a patch of healthy, green trees, per Dad's request. It'll make the walk to camp that much longer, but he's willing to deal with it. He makes it very clear that he doesn't wanna be within a hundred fuckin' feet of Shane. Maggie and Glenn express vehement understanding.
"He's like a bomb waitin' to go off, that man." She scoffs, setting the last item, a crate, down in the dirt. "Don't know why you keep him around."
Dad mutters sardonically, "He's popular in the Grimes department."
"Well, if he was in my group," She drawls, "He would've been gone days ago."
"Trust me, I share the fuckin' sentiment." He takes the last bag from Glenn. "I got it."
"You sure, man?"
He grunts uncomfortably as he tosses it into the tent. "Yeah, I'm sure. Don't need no babysitters. I'm fine."
"Well, that's everything." Maggie sighs. "Come back to the house for dinner tonight. We're havin' veggie soup and grilled cheese."
"I think I've had more than enough of that house for a lifetime."
"Half an hour won't kill ya." She rolls her eyes. "Do it for Carol. She made it happen, after all. We'll see ya then, okay? Bye, Harley."
"See ya later." I smile, giggling as Glenn flicks my ear as they both walk off.
Dad settles down in his camping chair, hissing.
I ask him, "Ya feelin' alright?"
"Yeah, baby. Just sore. Start a fire, will ya?"
"Sure thing," I say, turning away into the treeline to search for twigs.
In the afternoon, Glenn and Maggie return with everything on the list.
Dad insists that he don't even need the painkillers, but he gets forced by Maggie to take 'em, anyway. We wait half an hour for the pills to kick in, and then after some more arguing from Dad's end about how he can do it on his own, he yanks the IV needle out his arm and scoots onto the edge of the bed. With some effort and a few heavy grunts, he manages to get onto his feet, wobbling only slightly.
I cheer him on, making him smile a little.
We trail him out onto the back porch, hovering nearby in case he falters, but he stands strong the whole way.
He breathes in the fresh air. "Almost forgot what real life smelt like."
I pace around the house with him as Maggie and Glenn clear out all evidence of him ever existing in the guest room.
Herschel checks him over one last time and gives him the official green-light to return to life as usual.
I ask him, "Ya feelin' alright?"
"Yeah, baby. Just sore. Start a fire, will ya?"
"Sure thing," I say, turning away into the treeline to search for twigs.
We stay in our new little camp until the sun goes down. When I start to notice our people heading inside the house, I put my book down and convince him to come have dinner with everyone. It's only polite. He stomps out the fire, grabs my hand, and we make the short hike back.
When we step inside, the delicious smells of melted cheese, spices, and fresh bread fill my lungs.
"You made it." Maggie's delighted. "Nice walk over?"
"Sure." Dad replies gruffly, way out of his element, here. "This food better be good."
"Harley told me ya like scrambled eggs, so I made ya a portion to go with the rest of your plate. A little present to celebrate you walkin' again."
He seems caught off guard by such thoughtfulness, but he's grateful, anyway. "Thanks."
We make our way into the dining room, where everyone is finishing setting the two tables that they've managed to manoeuvre in here. They've even brought in a vase of wildflowers to serve as a nice centre piece. We take a seat at the table that naturally seems to have been designated the non-Greene table, next to Carl and Lori, who smile when they see us. Conversation is easy amongst our group, but there's not really any cross-contamination between us and the Greenes. This is the first time we've all been in the same room together. It's pretty awkward.
A bowl of colorful, steaming vegetable soup and a side of hot grilled cheese is served in front of everyone.
"We better thank Carol." Jacqui smiles as she hands us some cutlery. "This was all her idea."
"Oh, it was nothing." Carol meekly chuckles. "I just thought it would be a nice way to thank you all for everything you've done for us."
"Well, it looks delicious." Beth says kindly. "I can't wait to eat it."
After Jacqui sits down, Herschel's table join hands and say Grace together. Then it seems like we're in the clear to start eating.
Everybody makes little hums and pleased noises to let Carol and the other women know that the food is good, but nobody is brave enough to try and start a conversation. What do we talk about? The funeral? Shane going crazy? The possibility of getting banished to our deaths?
Eventually, Rick comes up with an idea, 'cause he's good like that. "How about that walker today, huh?"
Our table is clearly up for the distraction, but we're cut off almost immediately.
Herschel frowns. "What walker?"
Oh. He doesn't know.
There's a series of glances thrown around the room.
"There was a walker stuck in one of your wells." He awkwardly explains. "We, uh, pulled it out."
"I'm not sure I appreciate you poking around my property." Herschel says. "You should've come to me."
He nods, looking like he regrets even opening his mouth in the first place. "You're right. I'm sorry."
Another bout of silence falls over us.
Glenn tries next. "Anybody... know how to play guitar?"
"My Dad can play." I offer, poking at my soup.
T-Dog asks, "You any good?"
Dad shrugs. "I'm decent."
"Otis knew how to play."
We all try not to look at Patricia when she says this. She's just made things ten times more awkward for everyone.
It's almost as if Otis' ghost is in the room with us, and we just have to do our best to ignore it.
"Yes, and he played very well." Herschel quietly reminisces, before the silence takes over again.
I take four bites of my grilled cheese before Beth speaks up.
"What happened to your face?"
Shane chokes a little on his spoonful of broth, reluctantly answering, "Oh, uh, it's— I just tripped a little, that's all."
"Looks like you got into a fight." Patricia comments.
"No, that's— That's not what happened at all, ma'am."
Beside me, my Dad glowers across the table at Shane. Rick notices and adopts slightly nervous look, as if he thinks they're gonna jump on top of the food right this very second and stab each other with their butter knives. Honestly, they might.
"You sure?" Dad mocks Shane, a strange lilt to his voice.
"S'what I said, ain't it?"
"What?" He chuckles. "Did ya step on a fuckin' banana peel?"
"Don't start with me, Daryl."
"Daddy, leave it." I grumble harshly under my breath. "Just keep eatin'."
Jacqui suggests a change in subject. "How about you tell us how you learned to play, Daryl?"
"I think I'm good." He scoffs.
The tension grows to be so unbearable that I eventually excuse myself to go to the bathroom.
As I meander down the corridor and pass the empty kitchen, something on the other side of the window catches my eye. I pad over to the sink and go on my tip-toes, peering out into the dark. Over by the barn, there's a short, skinny figure standing in the grass, hunched like it's in pain. My eyes widen. Sophia? Is that her? With a glance back at the dining room, I decide it's best I don't bother anyone, and I head outside alone.
The warm night air surrounds me as I softly call out her name.
The figure groans lightly in response.
I can't see all too well, but I can make out a pair of thin legs, a stringy, knotted mass of hair, and two bony hands that twitch rabidly at its sides. I creep closer, slowly taking in the figure's too-tall height; the way it convulses lightly, unable to keep its balance. The moonlight peels over the clouds, then, splaying out across the silent field. The breath leaves my lungs. The figure is illuminated, revealing itself only now to be someone I don't recognise at all. It wheezes painfully, twisting to look at me with a face riddled in decay. My skin goes cold at the deadly sight.
It's a walker. Of course it's a walker, you stupid girl.
Dale was right. They're getting in, somehow.
I don't get a chance to turn around. All at once, a second body latches itself onto me, knocking me over into the grass. I cry out. Oh, God, there's more than one out here. I try scrambling away, but its cold hands grip my knee and anchor me to the spot. It climbs up my stomach, looking like something out a Goosebumps special. A pair of staggering footsteps approach, and when the second walker appears over the first one's wrinkly shoulder, I let out a blood curdling scream that rings in shockwaves through my skull. I can't take on two walkers. That's impossible.
In the distance, the back door swings open.
"Harley!?" My Dad hollers, echoed by the other men as they bound down the steps.
The walker's large crucifix necklace dangles tauntingly over my nose, shining with the yellowed spit that leaks from the gaping mouth above it.
I grab it, trying at the same time to kick the walker off. Its chiselled edges bite into my skin. Anything can be a weapon.
The walker flails angrily, possessed with hunger.
I drive the cross into its skull. It gives out a gurgling, beaten cry, and I stab it again, and again, and again, only stopping once the bone cracks around the dreadfully blunt end, and it slumps on top of me, dead for a second time. I push the top half of its heavy body offa me, ripping the beaded necklace from its neck with a dry snap. The grabbing hands and loud growling of the second walker quickly replace it.
I ready the crucifix again, but it's hard to aim when I'm seeing two of everything!
Its jaw hinges open above the soft skin of my leg.
Right as it's about to bite down on me, Shane suddenly comes into view.
His knife glints in the moonlight. He rears it back above his head, burying it deep into the walker's face in a swift, brutal motion. Black blood splatters his front as he pulls it out, grabs its shoulders, and throws it angrily into the grass, where it lands heavily, giving out one last croak.
I'm finally able to crawl away, throwing the necklace onto the ground.
Before I know it, my Dad is crouching at my side.
"Are ya bit?" He frantically demands to know.
"N— No." I shudder. "No, I ain't— I ain't bit."
"What happened?"
"I thought I saw someone, but..."
"You weren't there, Daryl!" Shane laughs loudly, now, still clutching the knife, sounding as if he's just won something. "You weren't there, man!"
"Bullshit, I wasn't!" Dad sneers, standing up. "I was two fuckin' feet behind ya!"
"And that walker's teeth were two hairs away from Harley's leg!" He retorts. "One more second — One second — And she'd be bit right now!"
"You don't know what the Hell you're talkin' about."
"All crippled and beaten, bumblin' over here like an old man. This is what happens, Daryl. You can't afford to be slow, no more!"
"I can protect my own!"
A grin splits his face. "Don't look that way from where I'm standin'."
"My own!" Dad growls. "You get that through your thick head, Shane! Mine! My fucking daughter!"
"And what a sad shame that is!"
You can't protect nobody.
Oh, why'd I have to go and tell him that?
The others finally make it over just in time for Dad's temper to snap.
I think my heart stops in this next moment. In a fit of rage and fire that nobody can stop, he pulls his knife from his sheath, jumps forward, and tackles Shane to the ground. I shriek as Rick and T-Dog hurry over to them, shouting at them to stop it, god damn it, stop it. Blades go flying left and right. Shirts are slashed. Curses are bellowed. Dad mounts his squirming body and lifts his knife into the air, making me squeal in horror. Rick takes a big handful of the back of his shirt, and right before he manages to drag him off, the knife comes down into Shane's shoulder. He cries out in agony, clutching the gash. He's lucky Dad missed in the chaos. Otherwise, it'd be in his throat.
Andrea and Lori throw themselves at the ground near Shane, feverishly putting their hands over his gushing stab wound.
"Oh, you're attackin' people, now, are ya, Daryl?" He goads, groaning through the pain. "You've always been a damn feral animal."
"At least I ain't a fuckin' creep! Goin' around, askin' little girls to hit me!"
"Maybe you should keep a closer eye on her, then, huh?"
Dad rushes forward again, but Rick catches him. He wrestles the knife out his hand and tosses it away.
"Holy shit!" Glenn exclaims, pulling on the roots of his hair.
Dale and Maggie rush over to me, their faces pale and panicked at the scene around them.
"That's enough!" Rick grinds out, forcing Dad backward with the help of T-Dog. "That's enough!"
"You say that shit again!" Dad roars over their heads. "Next time, I'm breakin' your fuckin' neck!"
Jimmy stares depressingly at the bodies. I think he must know who they were.
Carl sobs from nearby, "Dad, what's going on?"
Rick gives my Dad a shove, leaving him to stumble, clutching his hurt side. He reprimands, "What are you thinking?"
"I'm thinkin' he deserves worse." He groans.
"So, you kill him? That's your solution?"
"Why don'tchu ask him? He knows all about killin' folk, don'tchu, you fuckin' schizo? Betcher sorry I lived, huh?"
Shane tries to make a retort, but the people around him encourage him to stay calm.
Maggie helps me to stand, asking me if I'm hurt anywhere, to which I dazedly shake my head. We watch as Shane gets escorted back into the house, where they'll probably get started stitching him up right away. He pushes them all off of him, enraged. I can't believe that just happened. I don't think anybody else can, either. They're all frozen in place, eyes wide and darting around for answers to questions they didn't even know to ask.
My Dad slumps down in the dirt, his chest heaving from exertion, head hanging low. He cradles his aching stomach.
It finally happened.
"You okay, man?" T-Dog uncomfortably asks.
Dad spits blood into the grass. "I been wantin' to do that for about a month."
"Well, I hope it was worth it." Rick jibes. "We might lose our place here, now, thanks to you. You want your daughter back on the streets?"
"Long as she's nowhere near that crazy son of a bitch, I'on give a rat's ass where she is."
Rick scoffs, completely done with tonight. "You're unbelievable. Both of you, unbelievable, and outta your minds."
Jimmy pipes up, "What did he mean about killing folk?"
"Nothing. Get back inside." Rick scolds, turning away alongside Maggie to go follow after everyone else.
Then, it's just me, Dad, and Dale left out in the field to process everything that just went down. I head over to him, and he wraps me up in a tight hug that I never wanna leave. Shane's blood stains both our clothes, and I'm horrified to learn that it's all still hot and sticky. This was a total disaster. I knew this would happen sometime or other, but I thought I would be prepared to face it. I don't know what happens next.
This might be the push Rick needs to kick Shane from the group. He must see now that they cannot co-exist peacefully.
After a while, Dale inspects the dead walkers and murmurs to himself, "I knew something was fishy."
He paces along the footprints they left behind, following them this way and that, further and further away.
When he comes up just short of the barn, I frown in confusion.
He tugs at a few loose boards, poking around. He makes it to a crate that he pushes out the way, revealing a gaping hole in the wall.
"What the—?" I hear him exclaim, right before a dead hand shoots out from between the planks.
He steps back, astonished.
Dad's hand curls tighter around my shoulder.
When he calls out to us, his voice frail, I feel like I might faint.
"They're keeping walkers in the barn."
Author's Note.
There's a reason Shane rhymes with insane. That's all I'm gonna say about that 😵💫
Also, I rearranged the order of events a little bit for this one. The way I write this story is I bring up a script for the episode I'm following as well as the wiki page for the season, bc I don't have anywhere I can stream TWD. It was a little confusing having to combine stuff from different episodes, but I hope it flows well. I try very hard to mix canon with non-canon things in a way that feels seamless.
Basically, it goes - Walker in the well, shooting lessons are considered, Maggie and Glenn pharmacy run, awkward dinner, someone discovers the barn walkers. Same outcome, just different.
As always, I really hope you enjoyed this chapter. Thanks for reading. Sending love! <3
“No,” I whispered, brushing my thumbs over her cheekbones, my fingers gently pulling blood off her face. “Please don’t.”
Shakily, her hand came up to grasp my wrist, trembling even as her fingers latched onto me. A small sob wracked my chest. The way she touched me forced tears out of my eyes, and made something snap out of place inside my head. Words rushed out of me like a venom drip.
“Yin—look at me, okay? Hey—hey, don’t close your eyes, I’m right here. Don’t! Don’t… You’re okay, I’m right here,” I sobbed, as tears dripped down my face and splashed on her throat.
She gave me a weak, silent smile, a thin line of blood working its way down her chin. How could she say anything? The blade had slashed its mark, cutting a deep V into her neck. She was losing blood fast, but the assassin hadn’t even given her the luxury of an instantaneous death. Instead, the most beautiful girl in the world was choking on her own blood with her head in my lap.
And wasn’t that my fault? I had appeared before they had finished the job, and they’d seemed to dissolve, the knife clattering on the ground behind them. Maybe if I was one second late, Yin would have a merciful death…
“Don’t go, don’t go,” I choked, bending forward to press a kiss to her blood-streaked face. “Don’t go, please don’t go…”
She smiled at me again, reaching up with what little strength she had to touch one of my braids, the split ends of my hair coiled and languishing in the pool of her blood. There was blood everywhere. Dark, deep red, but flecked with the golden ichor of divine power.
“It’s okay, baby.” I cupped her face in my hands. “Don’t worry, baby, okay? I made you a promise, I promised, we’re gonna see the world together, okay? I promised you. It’s gonna happen.” Empty promises, empty words, just lies in a voice scratchy from disuse. I didn’t care, I didn’t care, I didn’t care, I just needed her to die happy.
“Don’t you forget I said that.” My voice broke on the last word, and a fresh deluge of tears poured down. I wiped them away, not out of a desire to keep them off my face, not even to look strong for her in her last moments—I just didn’t want the stinging salt to land on her gaping wounds.
“Don’t you forget, Yin. I’m gonna take you everywhere.” With her words silenced, I was talking for the both of us now, filling the emptiness she left. I almost never talked in more than three-word sentences, but the sobbing, manic yarns spilling from my throat felt like they needed to crawl out of me, or I would combust.
I cradled her broken body close, even as she made a tortured gurgling sound, her blood coating my own skin. Why wasn’t she dead yet? The fact that I even thought of that made my eyes blur with tears again. I didn’t know what to do. I knew she was suffering, slowly choking on her own blood as she bled out. I tried to prod at her neck to see the damage. There was no coming back from this. I had called for a medic, but I knew it would take far too long for one to get to us. All I could do was hold her as she lay slowly dying.
Slowly, without her seeing, my fingers tightened on the dagger her killer had left behind. I could end her suffering. I could make it so she never had to feel pain again. I could make sure she died with compassion and empathy. She could go to her grave knowing that the person who ended it loved her very, very much, enough to sacrifice her own psyche to give her a merciful end.
I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t make myself make the final move. I knew I was being selfish. How could anyone sit and watch their lover painfully succumb, while holding the means to end their suffering? But every time I tightened my grip on the hilt, a painful thing exploded in my chest, popping with an impact that made fresh tears stream down my face. I wanted her to stay with me as long as she could. That was the simple, selfish truth. I didn’t want to think of the void she would leave when she departed.
“I’ll take you across the ocean,” I promised, tenderly brushing the hair out of her eyes. “I would take you to the moon if I could. But I can’t, so instead, my love, we’ll go anywhere on this earth that you want… I’ll buy hiking boots so I can follow you up any mountain you desire. You can see any beautiful scenic view, as long as you know that I think you’re more beautiful than any of that.”
Yin’s dark eyes searched my face. I let out a choked sob. I didn’t want to guess what she was saying. I wanted to hear her. I wanted her to make me laugh, even as she bled out in my lap. I knew she could. But the knife had severed her vocal cords, and now she was silenced, forever.
The medics weren’t coming in time. Her time was almost up. But did I want to end it quickly? She must have been in more pain than I could ever imagine. I almost wanted her to hurry up and die so I wouldn’t have to do it myself, and I hated myself for wanting that.
Do it. Do it. No, I can’t!
“I’m sorry,” I whispered, touching one of her horns. I was sorry for not protecting her. I would have taken that knife in a heartbeat, if only I had found her a second earlier, maybe I could have saved her. If only I had found her a second later, the job would be finished, and she wouldn’t be in so much pain. And I wouldn’t have to watch her die.
It felt like my body was being pulled apart. “I’m sorry!” I sobbed, flinging myself onto her.
She shook her head, confusion furrowing her brow. Of course I didn’t want to tell her what I was really agonizing over. She already knew she was dying, and the fact that her lover was selfishly agonizing over whether to murder her or not…
I pulled back, managing a smile. “I’m sorry, my love, for failing to take you there earlier. I promised you, and I never break my promises,” I lied, even as my voice shook. I smiled through shivers.
Taking my hand off her cheek, Yin pressed a kiss to my grimy fingertips, smearing the blood already caked there. Her eyes started to slip closed, but I yelped, “No! No! One more second. Stay with me, baby, please. Please!” I couldn’t pretend it was okay anymore. I was watching her die and I couldn’t do anything about it. I dropped my shoulders, then realized my neck was cramping from tension.
Yin was struggling to keep her eyes open. I brushed dirt off her white eyelashes. “I love you,” I sobbed, wishing she could say it back. She took my hand as I did, staring into my eyes, her own gaze fierce even as the light drained out of it.
“I love you,” I whispered as my fingers shook on an unfamiliar blade. “I love you. I love you, I love you, I love you.” It became an obsessive, thrumming mantra. I repeated it as I brought the blade up, all pretense gone. Her eyes widened, but she nodded, slightly. Something wrenched in my chest. Of course she wanted this, and of course I had been selfish to deny it.
“I love you, I love you, I love you, and I’m sorry.” My entire body shook, my arm trembling most of all. She didn’t close her eyes, just looked up at me, eyes darting around my face. And at the last moment, the tip of my blade already drawing blood from her carotid artery, I saw a thin smile on her face.
The dagger sunk in up to the hilt. She bled out faster than I could have ever imagined, and my hands and skirt were immediately covered in gold-flecked crimson. She was dead before she even had time to close her eyes. My trembling hand moved to shut them, the sparkling depths of black now dull and unseeing.
I buried my face into her chest and screamed, so hard I was sure the impact of sound would fracture her ribs. Covered in blood and hunched over the body of a lover I’d killed, I screamed until my throat was hoarse. Slumping back, I covered my face in my bloodied, blackened hands, then screamed again until I was sure I had nothing else to give. It was then that I noticed that I was crying, my tears dancing together with the blood on my face.
I knew I would never speak again. In her last moments, something had broken, and I’d spoken enough to fill the silence she’d left. Now I lay exhausted, sure I had used all the remaining words I had for my lifetime.
But how does exhausted compare to dead? I wanted to scream again, but all that came out was a dying whine. I scratched at my scalp, trying to pull at the roots of my hair. One of my braids had come loose by now, the ends spilling, wavy and wispy, down my back. I pulled out the other one, letting it down as I dropped my head low, a broken sob emanating from the empty cavity of my chest. The world was melting before my eyes, everything dropping away until it was just me and Yin’s broken corpse.
Easing her body off of my lap, I moved her hands over her chest. If not for her mangled throat, she could have been peacefully sleeping. I laid down next to her, ignoring the hard floor pressing on my head and the blood that was soaking into my hair and clothes.
I sat up, confused, as I realized everything around me was gone. Shifting in ways that they shouldn’t be. Yin’s body was still there, but now the neck gash had shifted to a gory ruin in her abdomen. Then I grabbed her, and the only thing left behind was a silken scarf? I drew back. When had I moved to a standing position? I closed my eyes as I realized. This had to be just a—
“Bad dream?” Yin asked, as she shook me awake.
I looked into her eyes, astonished, before my body shook with a sob. I pressed myself into her body, tears soaking her shirt. There was no blood on my face. I touched her throat, intact, not weeping crimson like it had been just a moment ago. We were on the bed in my apartment, not… where even was I just a moment ago? I furrowed my brow, struggling to remember.
Now that I was thinking about my nightmare, I saw all the flaws and cracks in it. Who was that assassin? What sort of motive would they have, besides putting my mind in a personal hell that no one else even knew about? How did they impossibly disappear when I approached? The only thing my mind had rendered in perfect clarity was Yin lying in my lap, slipping away.
I touched her hand—cold, but not in a corpselike way. I felt at her pulse, strong and present. My hands surprised me; they were so much less sensitive than they had just been. Of course. My dream had failed to remember that my real hands could only feel temperature and pressure, not the finer details of touch.
“…Are you okay?” she asked, worry pinching her brow. “I woke up, and you were shaking in your sleep. Did you have a nightmare?”
Not finding words, I nodded into her shoulder.
Her next question. “…Was it about me?”
I nodded again, feeling fresh tears well up in my eyes.
“I thought so… You were kind of talking in your sleep. I didn’t hear much, but I think I heard… ‘Don’t go, please don’t go.’”
I grabbed fistfuls of her sleep shirt and sobbed into her shoulder. Her hand came up to rest on my back. “It’s okay, Hedy, I’m right here. That was just a nightmare. I’m not going anywhere, okay?” She moved my head so it was resting on her chest. I could hear her heartbeat. “Just lie here with me for a while. I’m right here, I’m right here.”
There was no blood on my hands, no gash in her throat. She was speaking to me. The world was right again.
“Do you want to talk about it?” Yin asked softly, thumbs rubbing circles over my back.
“I saw you die,” I said, my voice scratchy.
“Oh, gods—“ She pulled me closer. “That’s horrible…”
“No.” I shook my head. “Not that bad.”
“There was something worse?”
I had to kill her. I plunged the knife into her neck, because I knew she would suffer even more if I didn’t do it. No one was coming, so it had to be me. And I felt horrible and selfish for denying her so long, just because I wanted to have her all to myself until the bitter end.
“Do I sin?” I whispered. “For wanting you?”
“Of course not.” She pressed a gentle kiss to the top of my head. “Wanting to be with someone you love… that’s human.”
I nodded, trying to accept this. “I… killed you.”
She stilled, uneasy. I rushed to continue. “You died slowly. I finished it. Stopped your suffering.”
“I… see.” She took a deep breath. I felt broken. Of course the thought would weigh heavy on her.
“It hurt me.”
“It would hurt anyone.” She pulled back, cupping my face in her hands. “You’re not a sinner just because you didn’t want to… kill me, jeez, Hedy. I think most of us would never even think of doing that.”
“Even you?”
Her eyes slid to the side. “It doesn’t matter.”
“Tell me,” I urged.
“Do you care what the answer is?” Yin turned her head so I saw her profile, silhouetted, the sharper edges of her face catching the moonlight. I could hear the soft hums of cars below us as the silence stretched.
“No.”
She closed her eyes. “I doubt I would have the strength to do it.”
I looked at my hands. “Are you scared?”
“Of you?” Her eyes widened. “Never. How could you ever think that?”
“You were suffering.”
“Listen to me, do not feel selfish over that. I wouldn’t have been able to do it. We’re the same, aren’t we?” She pressed her hand to mine, palms together. Our hands were a similar size, but hers were longer and thinner than mine. I wished I could feel the creases and calluses of her skin.
“And how could I be afraid of myself?”
I drowned myself in her eyes. I did see reflections of myself in her. We synergized so well, I’d expect nothing less.
“You were dead.” Another sob seized my chest. I couldn’t get the image of her, unspeaking with dull eyes, out of my head.
“It was just a dream, Hedy.” She pulled me closer again. “It was just a dream, I’m right here. I’m not going anywhere.” My hair caught on the scales that studded her forearms.
“You were silent,” I choked out. “Your voice destroyed.”
“It’s okay, my love.” Her fingers pulled through my hair. “It was just a dream, just a dream.”
“But what if…”
“It won’t happen.” There was a fierce azure glint in her eye. “If it bothers you that much, I will make sure it will never happen. You are everything to me.”
“…We’ll see the world…” I whispered, burying my face into her neck. “I promised…”
“We will, Hedy.” She rubbed gentle circles into my shoulders. “I’ll take you anywhere you want.”
“We can go anywhere. Any beautiful view.” I repeated what I had said in my dream, only in fewer words. “I’ll follow you. But you’re more beautiful. I promised, I promised—“
“And I know you’ll make good on that.” She thumbed a tear off my face. “I know I’m yours. Always.”
“Always,” I whispered, pressing my face into her chest. She held me close while silent sobs wrenched my body, until my throat felt dry and sticky instead of tear-doused. More than once, I struggled to breathe, and she pressed gentle kisses to my forehead and murmured sweet nothings until my mind cleared again. I turned my head so that I could hear her heartbeat once more, trying to convince myself that she was alive, and that nothing was going to happen to her.
It hurt that her death wasn’t even the worst part of that dream. It was her suffering. The way she was dying, and no one was around to help her except me. And what could I do? I defended people from harm and took the blows so they wouldn’t have to. I couldn’t fix what was broken. The only thing I could do was sacrifice myself—too late for that—or kill out of mercy. I shook. I had bled her to death in my dream, but I doubted I could do it in reality.
“I could never,” I murmured against her chest. “Hurt you.”
“I understand.” Yin’s voice in her chest was a rumble against my ear. “It’s your worst nightmare…”
“Yes.”
“Well, it’s not happening. I promise. I promise you, I won’t fault you for having emotions.” She took my hand, kissed my fingertips. “I love you.”
“I’m a sinner,” I choked, gripping her collar.
“No, you’re not. You’re human. You have emotions. No one expects you to do something horrible like that for some greater good. It’s okay to be worldly. I promise, nothing bad will come to you if you love me.”
I nodded, trying to believe it, and pushed closer to her. It was too bright outside to be nighttime, but too dark to be daytime. Still Greywater bustled, only slightly muted, outside my windowsill. I wondered where those people were headed. I wondered if any of them carried as much weight within them as me or Yin.
“Stay with me,” I whispered.
“I will.” Yin’s scaly arms pressed against me. We breathed together as the sun rose, until I was certain she wouldn’t slip away.
five times confessed :
Tumblr media
5 times ... meme ( accepting ) + @dcmination // dred ( five times the receiver confessed a secret or feeling to the sender )
She's new here, this teacher with the icy hair and the charming smile - a witch, she says, a witch with formidable power, she's told. And while she doesn't really care much for the more human staff, she's... trying to be nice. Since Lulu asks her so nicely. And she imagines in her lifetime that she's probably met many mortals that come and go, but she can tell from the instant that she meets her that Dred, Dred is going to be fun - which she tells her as much over those first glasses of wine they share in Lulu's office, one leg curling over the other, shooting her a look when asked about if she thinks she'll last - it's kind of a daring thing to see her ask about it in the first place so directly. "I have a feeling you're going to be just fine. Why do I also feel that you coming here has a touch of DESTINY to it? Oh who knows, I was never very good at divining the future."
Marceline isn't sure when things change. Like the feelings, and the... whatever. She likes to think that these things don't really matter because... they're not going to last long, will they. Because that's the harsh truth, that's just how it is, and why immortals tended towards their own. IT'S JUST EASIER. But one day when it's the two of them and they're out on the town and Marceline has her there by the wrist to pull her in for a dance, she knows that something is different. She knows that she's in trouble, and maybe that's a confession for too much red wine and leaning there into the other's arms. "I think I like you more than I should-" the slurring trip at the tip of her tongue. "And worse, I think you like me enough to let me."
Feeding on her for the first time is... heaven. Or worse, it's like something that she could overindulge on, something that she could give her for. It'd be easy... so easy to do too much, to feed back to her, her own blood. To do what Erandi did with so much more ease than Marceline ever had. It's the wrong kind of thing for her to think about because the truth was that maybe she'd mind it A LOT if this was all their time together. She even tells her once, her fingers shifting through all that blue. "... If you asked me, I'd think about it." teeth gnawing at her bottom lip, worried for the weight of it. "And I almost hate that because I always told myself I'd never do that."
Tumblr media
"What if I said I've been in love, probably 10 times in my life," you live a thousand years, you learn that love takes all kinds of shapes, and happens in so many ways. Love is like, more than the romantic. She learns that from the first person who really acts like a father towards her. But she counts those things because it's what teaches her what to look for, her concern all WRAPPED UP in how tense things have been lately, how you never know what time you really have to say something, share it earnestly. "... but you know, it never makes it less lovely. Like. And maybe it's hasty to say this but I'm glad I have this opportunity, with you. For it to mean something."
Oh how sorry she was ; but Dred had been dying. And what was she supposed to do? It's not supposed to be like this, and really, she knows better, even if the selfish, awful part of her takes contentment in knowing that now, well... now, there was no DENYING IT. Dred was now immortal, a thing like her, a vampire, made new by the queen herself... and Marceline, when bent over her, holding her close as she felt the other woman twitch with new life, could only apologise. "I shouldn't... I shouldn't have done this- Dred, I..." she knows better, and yet...when push came to shove, she couldn't do it, couldn't let go when it counted the most.
Hi i was wondering if i can get a BNHA match up!
im aboit 5’4” on the slimer side, i have long red dyed hair (naturalky blonde) with gold frame glasses bangs and a undercut!
i dress very ’artsy’ i guess lots of color bood patterns but despute that outward apperance im very akward! im shy and really keep to myself so its hard for me to open up and also for others to get to know me. i prefer a chill night in hangong out with my friends and cuddlung in a big pile of stuffed animals and blankets!
i love to watch movies, make presentations on my favorite things at the moment and present them, i love to draw and make art, and i also like to write my friends letters and give them gifts to remind them of how much i love them!(id do this for my partner and more!)
Hi Darling, Thank you for getting back to me about switching your match-up to Haikyuu and I apologize for taking so long to get this finished for you. You are such a lovely person and I know just the person who will agree with me on that.
Your Haikyuu Match Up is...
Tendou Satori
Tumblr media
Satori definitely loves that you two have matching hair and it honestly is what caused him to talk to you in the first place. Although he was slightly saddened to figure out that your hair is dyed, he still loved the color on you and is glad that you chose it.
He adores your artsy style and even more when you two match. He doesn't mind the cheesiness and loves it more when you two match.
He'll compliment every one of your new outfits and adores the old ones. He thinks it's incredible how you can come up with a million different outfits using a lot of the same clothing over and over again.
He understands your more shy personality mainly because it reminded him a lot of himself as a kid. He tries his best not to make you embarrassed in front of large crowds, but when you two are alone he likes to give you a lot of cuddles and attention.
Satori doesn't mind your stuffed animals and helps you add to your collection. He will bring you a bunch of weird-looking stuffies that can easily be identified as his additions.
His love language is quality time so he doesn't care what you two do as long as you two are spending time together.
Even if you two are doing something he doesn't really enjoy, he will find happiness in just being there with you, so you never feel pressured to have to plan the perfect date.
The first time that he received a letter from you he almost cried. He never knew how much he really meant to you until he got the letter. It truly made him feel accepted by someone.
On days when you are down. he will do just about anything to make you feel better. If you need some alone time he will give it to you though. He understands just needing to get away from people and have a bit of peace and quiet.
All in all, Satori will accept you wholeheartedly for who you are and what you choose to do with your life. He will be there to support you every step of the way.
Finally being alone. It’s been a whole year lol. Time to get back to myself lol but I hope you are good. I’ve been thinking about you here & there. I’m glad I got to live all last year for once in my life or be free. I wanna say it was good karma just coming back to me after all these years but I think this year it’s gonna be REAL good karma. Idk if I told you but I met this stranger at Olive Garden, she was a host but the person I was w asked what book she was reading & it was spiritual book & her & I just start talking or whatever & she was like she’s been looking for a spiritual buddy to go to sound baths w & shit & I’m like girl ME TF. She’s 30 LMFAO but you can tell she’s really in touch w her inner child. She’s also a leo lol. I texted her but we haven’t spoken much probably cus she’s busy or idk & idc but it was awakening that I needed to get back into my spirituality. I’ve also attempted to dye my hair purple. Literally nothing happened but I could see a bit & it was fire. Maybe soon but ima just go black in the meantime again cus whatever this color is I don’t like it. It’s like a brownish/red like nah bruh. Im tired of my natural hair lol. Anyways I have nobody & im here for it. My soul was itching to be alone for a while now. Im sober too yay for me. I’ve been drinking again too which is good. Like my body can handle it cus idk if you remember I told you I would get sick so I just stopped drinking altogether but yeah now I can drink so that’s good. I haven’t been smoking cus no. Mostly because I wanna be more stable emotionally & mentally or I wanna get used to be being alone cus high me intensifies my inner world so if I am not used to being alone or at peace I’m gonna be thinking of the past & the past is what I’m tryna let go of rn. I also stopped w tarot cards because I used them too much & I noticed they would go missing (probably cus of that lol) so I was like well it’s not necessary rn & I should be more present & i don’t care about knowing. I’ve also been itching to go to the gym but I need a push or that right moment but it’s been on my mind like crazy. Maybe tmr (February 1st). I’ve been more disciplined w money too! LMFAOOOOOOO one of my biggest issues lol. Spending is a part of who I am lol. Also I’ve already applied for financial aide cus yes tf cus I already made the decision to get my associates in social work. So idk let’s see if it’s even gonna manifest if not then maybe I’ll make my way around it anyways. I know im not meant to overwork & it’ll all turn out in my favor. I wish I was rich & could not work but volunteer to help people just cus. The whole making money for helping people just doesn’t sit right w me 😭 but I mean I guess it doesn’t matter when that’s my intention in the first place so money is a bonus. Pisces midheaven tingz 💁🏻‍♀️✨. Anyways I feel good tho kinda. In terms of feeling like I’m human or healing. Like not on meds, having good mental & emotional health & energy to be present for a job, having energy to go to school & the gym like idk I thought I was beyond damaged tbh that it wasn’t possible for me. I wanna cry LMFAO. This song in the back tho. I’m listening to my old playlist. I wanna get back into music againnn. But yeah I’m glad I’m doing better. Unfortunately it had to take this long but im glad I can be healthy to enjoy the rest of life. It’s like living for the first time. Being a teenager for the first time, being a kid for the first time, & being an adult for the first time as well. It feels super good to have them all in synch cus I thought I lost my teenage years. I mean I did when I was actually a teenager but at the end of the day those are just numbers & im still in touch w my inner teen so dying my hair & everything feels good like I’m living it now. Im so glad I haven’t gotten my tattoos yet like I’m glad everything is happening at the time it is. It’s not rushed. I wanted everything so early but then I see everyone having everything so early that they get so tired of it so quickly or doing things early that they are tired of it & it’s like not for me!
This month has truly been so good. I've been focusing on what I love to do and my boys. I've decided on my cosplay projects for this year as costuming has always been one of my favourite hobbies. I let myself be pushed away from so many things I love because of local crap and I'm glad to be feeling more like myself. This year I want to really start doing projects and not feel like I'm stepping on anyone's toes or potentially having people talk shit about me behind my back. I really lost sight of those who truly know me and who I am and I'm so glad to be taking control again. Fuck yes to being more confident in myself this year 😤
Genre: Angst
I use the Doomsday war to my advantage, that just feels right.
Dark
Why is everything dark?
I-Why can't I see?!
Why can't I move my wings?!
Dad! Help me, I'm scared!
-
6
"Dad! Help me, I'm scared!" Tears rolled down my face as I clung to the tree branch, "Y/n, it's ok! Keep your eyes on me and jump." Philza yelled. You were playing hide and seek with your brothers and managed to get stuck in a tree, which is why you're in this situation. "W-What if I fall?!" I yelled back, my tears blurred my vision, the only thing recognizable to me was Phil's white and green bucket hat. "I'll catch catch you. I promise." He said, his calming voice relaxing me. You took his word of it and jumped from the branch, you expecting to hit the ground or Phil's arm at least but with a small peak you saw that you were flying. "D-Dad....I'm flying!" You yelled excitedly while Philza was clutching his chest as if his heart was about to collapse on itself. If you were to ask him about it today, he would say that it was the most stressful day of his life.
-
14
"Tech, c'mon!" You whined, as your brother payed not mind to the fact that you were bothering or well at least trying to bother him. "Y/n, for chirst sake stop annoying your brother." Philza said, he just wanted some peace and quiet in the house for once and you were the only thing keeping it from that. "Y/n, I've already told you that you can't go outside with me a night, you're going to get hurt." The pink haired piglin murmured, "I can protect myself, you know this." "No, is no." He said in a stern tone making you huff in annoyance.
"Go with him, I won't tell a soul." Wilbur's voice cheered, his red beanie rested lazily on his head as he leaned on the couch. "Thank you, I'll do your chores for 3 days." "Make it a week." "Fine." After that little exchange you ran out the door to find Techno.
Deep into the forest you silently trail behind your brother while hiding behind trees and bushes, upon hearing a sudden noise that surprised you, you turned around to see your brother nowhere in sight. Your breath quicken as you looked around the forest in panick, where the hell is he?, while walking through the forest you bumped into someone, "Techno! I'm so glad to see yo-AAAA!" You cut yourself off to find out that instead stood a zombie, you backed yourself into a tree which left you nowhere to go, as much as you wanted to use your wings it was useless since the zombie could just grab you. "I can't believe I'm going to die to a zombie-" You managed to say, your terror was short lived because Techno stabbed the zombie through the heart. "Techno, I'm so sorry for following you. I almost got killed and-" Your rambling was cut short due to the sudden hug from the piglin, "I'm just glad your ok, I don't know what I'd do with myself if you got hurt." He whispered, all you could do was cry into his never as he carried you home.
-
17
"Dad, I'm not six anymore, I take care of myself. Techno gets to move out, what about me?!" You yelled, it was anthor fight between you and Phil, it's been getting more worse everytime. "The difference between you and Techno is that he proved that he can take care of himself." Phil argued back making you more annoyed. "When did it become about proving something? All I'm asking you to do is trust me, when did the become so hard to do?!" You screamed, you were at your limit, you ran out of the house and flew up to sit on the roof.
You were left to your thought until you heard a familiar voice, "It's rough in there haha..." Wilbur said, he was trying to make you feel better but he mentally cursed himself for even saying that. "You know he's trying his best right?" He sighed, Wilbur took a seat next to you and stared at the sky. Phil, Tommy, Wilbur, Techno and you used to sit on the roof and talk about the weirdest of things while watching the sunset, but not that Techno left to love on his on it doesn't feel the same. "Yeah, but I wish he'd do the bare minimum and treat me like I'm seventeen." I mumbled letting out a deep sigh, "Well, just know that I have your back no matter what, ok?" Wilbur reassured, he put out his pinky finger and you did the same, "Ok..." You gave the brunette a small smile then turning your attention back to the sunset.
-
19
"Now you've done it ya lil shit!" You jokingly yelled, you chase Tommy around the living room while Phil was making dinner and Wilbur was writing a song in his book. "Dad help! Y/n is brutally murdering me!" Tommy yelled while Phil hummed, not paying any attention to the blonde. "Imbeciles! Everyone of you in this house, imbeciles!" The blonde chanted while everyone laughed at you piled your entire weight on the boy.
Later in the night you heard a knock on your door, you utter a gentle come in to see Tommy. "What's up bud?" You ask, you sat up to look at him, "You know how Phil is finally letting you go live on your own?" You hummed and watced the boy try to find his word. "I...I don't want you to go-" He said, his voice sounding shakes which alarmed you.
"Is that was this is about? C'mon, sit." You sighed and patted a spot on you bed signaling for him to sit. "I know that you're going to miss me but just know that you'll have to get used to not having me around, I'm sure Wilbur feels the same. I believe in you, big man." I said while ruffling his hair, his expression seemed like he still wasn't read to let go. "But what about when you wake me up when I don't want to get up? What about you kicking me under the table during dinner, what about when I need you to tell me that everything is find? What about-" He paused to collect his thoughts. "Y/n, what am I without you?" His words made me halt, "Yourself..."
-
Doomsday
"You chose your side Y/n, Techno and I chose ours." Phil spoke, his tone cold and devoid of care."But, I thought- I thought we were a family." I say, Philza only wince at my words. I look up at him, Techno, and Dream as they set off the TNT dropper, with little time I tried to fly away I kept missing the TNT only by a kiss and a prayer until, "Y/n look out!" Tommy yelled, I quickly look behind me see TNT about to explode, out of instinct I use my wing to shield me.
Dark
Why is everything dark?
I-Why can't I see?!
Why can't I move my wings?!
Dad! Help me, I'm scared!
Why is no one there?
Dad-No, Phil, Techno, Wilbur, Tommy.....where are you?
My body felt like it was about the give out, I was losing a lot of blood. "I guess this is how I die...Techno can't save me this time." I chuckled to myself, "I wonder how one of Wilbur's songs go... Jubilee Line, was it?" I paused.
"Wasting your time
You're wasting mine
I hate to see you leaving
A fate worse than dying
Your city gave me asthma
So that's why I'm fucking leaving."
While I was singing a voice called out to me, it seems like I was buried under a pile of rocks...cool I guess. A hand reached and pulled me out of the dark creavis, surprising me completely.
I didn't realize how relieved I was to not die until I stole a hug from the person that saved me, he smelled of blueberries and heaven he was wear a colorful hoodie and a sea foam green swirl on the front. "It's ok, everything will be ok." Even his soft voice resembled an angel, I cried into his hoodie an. The man hugging me whispered small reassurances as my tears stain his hoodie, in that moment I've never been this scared to let someone go.
because I could not stop for death
because I could not stop for death / he kindly stopped for me / the carriage held but just ourselves / and immortality ~ Emily Dickinson
Danny Fenton was dying, properly this time.
Somehow, in the back of his head and in his worst nightmares, he knew it would end this way: bleeding on the floor of his parents’ lab where it had all began. He was so hot he felt like his skin was on fire, blood and ectoplasm were dripping all over him and his lungs and heart were working overtime to try in vain to keep him alive a moment longer. He’d imagined at the time that there would be more screaming but death, in the end, was turning out to be a quiet little affair. A lonely table set for one.
“Danny, Danny come on, you-you gotta slow down your breathing, just relax, for me, please,” Sam moaned, more than making up for his lack of noise. She was shaking and touching him all over, his chest, his face, his hair. Normally she jumped right into action but she had to know, deep down, that there was nothing she could do. All that was left was to watch her panic and cry, it wasn’t his favorite image.
“Vlad!” He heard Tucker scream cry into the phone, “please it’s Tucker, Danny’s dying I think. The Fentons had some new invention, something about his core, please we don’t know what to do!”
Ugh Vlad, he was probably going to be so happy Danny was on his way out. He wasn’t looking much forward to his last images being his archenemy gloating. Tucker hung up and reached down to grasp Danny’s hand so hard it hurt. “Don’t worry dude, Vlad’s coming. He knows so much about you half ghosts that you’ll be fixed up on no time.” Right, Danny was already dead. If calling Vlad, feeling like he did something, helped Tucker move on then he’d deal with it.
Danny tilted his head to the side where Sam’s fingernails were carding through his hair. It was getting harder to see with the blood pouring out of his eyes but he looked at her, and tried to memorize her face. He’d never been able to tell her how much he loved her, that any day spent with her was a blessing. Tucker too, his best bro and a part of his soul. His best friends in the whole wide world, through thick and thin. God, he was going to miss them.
“Glurk,” he said, trying to convey those feeling but the fluids in his mouth and airway made it impossible. “Blerh.”
“Shh shh shh,” Sam soothed, “it’s okay, don’t try to talk.”
“Daniel!” He heard Vlad’s voice shriek as he materialized in front of the portal. Sam and Tucker were violently pushed out the way. Danny wanted to be angry at his loved ones being taken away in his final moments but anger was for the living, he barely had the energy to breathe. This death was too long and too short all at once. He made eye contact with Vlad who all at once lost the frantic edge to his tone and and instead knelt on the floor. “Oh my dear boy. What did they do to you?”
“What is going on?” Sam demanded, shoving her way back in. Danny was glad, he could see again like this. “Why aren’t you doing something!”
“There’s nothing to be done,” Vlad said in a flat, monotone, he picked up one of Danny’s hands and patted it gently. “His core is dying, it’s like a ghost’s heart. It contains their very essence, it is from which everything they are comes from. If Jack and Maddie somehow disrupted it then there’s nothing anyone can do to save him.”
“But he’s human too,” Tucker defended, grabbing Danny’s other hand. His human warm skin burned but the contact felt so good, he twitched his fingers closer to his friend’s. “He-he doesn’t need a core, he’s already got a heart. So, so he doesn’t have powers, we can do normal again.”
“You-” Vlad hissed before taking a calming breath. “The accident that made Daniel like this irreparably altered him. His core was as much a part of keeping him alive as his other organs, without it, his body is shutting down.” Vlad turned down to look Danny in the eye and saw true, genuine grief in those hateful red eyes.
“I cannot imagine the agony you are going through, I’m so sorry. I’d say it will be over soon but,” a hitch that sounded almost like a sob if it was coming from anyone other than Vlad. “But you’ve hovered on the edge of death for years, son, and you’ve always been such a fighter. You have minutes at most but those minutes are an eternity when you’re suffering.”
Sam and Tucker’s sobbing blended together in the background, Vlad was saying something with a miserable, stunned expression. The swirling of the portal in the background seemed louder than anything, louder than his heart beat pounding and pounding as it ran it’s last race.
“Daniel, Danny,” he focused his eyes back on Vlad who had a stubborn, unhappy set to his brow. “Do you want me to make the pain stop? An ectoblast to your chest will end your life instantly.”
“Don’t you dare touch him,” Sam shrieked, coming back into view and looking like she was trying to fight Vlad off. “You do anything to him and I’ll kill you!” Tucker just sat and stared at him, like he too was trying memorize Danny’s face.
“It’s a mercy, Samantha or do you want his last moments on earth to be drowning on the blood in his lungs.”
“Sam, he has a point. I don’t- I don’t think we can fix this.”
“No! No we always fix things, I’ll do it myself if I have to!”
Danny’s vision was starting to go, more black than anything else. He closed his eyes and readied himself for the inevitable.
“Time Out,” Danny opened his eyes and found he was no longer in pain. He was standing up and apart from where he’d previously been lying. Sam had her hands in Vlad’s face and the older hybrid was snarling something at her. Tucker was midmotion trying to stand up, presumably to get Sam but the three of them were frozen in the moment. Danny turned and found Clockwork floating, looking very out of place in his parents lab. “Good evening, Danny.”
“You that short on cash that you work part time as a grim reaper?” Danny quipped out of habit. He looked down at his body and grimaced a bit, that wasn’t a pretty sight. No doubt traumatizing for Tucker and Sam. God how were they going to explain this to his parents? “Gonna ferry me across the River Styx? I don’t have two pennies but I think I have a bloodied $10 on me.”
“You’re core is dying and you have 17 seconds left in this world before all your organs give out and finish the process you began when you turned on your parent’s ghost portal,” Clockwork explained as he changed into child form.
“O-okay,” Danny said shakily, trying to be brave even when he was so, so scared. He was going out whether he wanted it or not but he refused to leave crying. “Nice of you to come say goodbye then but, uh but unless you have something to say then you should let me go back. No one knows better than me that you can’t outrun death. Thanks but I’m uh I’m ready.”
Clockwork stared at him for a bit, not sure how long, time was weird like this but he changed forms a few times. “You’re quite the remarkable young man, Danny Fenton.”
“Uh thanks,” Danny added, once more looking at his body which had, according to Clockwork, a 17 second expiration date. “What’s going to happen? Am I going to become a ghost? Does heaven or hell exist for someone like me?”
“I don’t get to decide what happens, I merely see options,” Clockwork stated easily, taking his time. “If you die naturally you’ll become ghost, a mere shadow of who you are now and one who would fade fairly quickly. You don’t have strong enough anger or regrets to tie you in the real world for long.” Not great but okay he supposed, hell for his friends and family though. “You could let Plasmius deliver his mercy kill, destroying what’s left of your ghost core and ensuring you do not come back.” Better, probably won’t help the Fruitloop’s instability but he can’t save everyone.
“That one comes with it’s own caveat but I’ll get to that in a moment,” Clockwork explained. “There is a third option where you get up off the floor and walk away.” Danny blinked then looked back at his body which certainly wasn’t walking anywhere but into a plush casket. Clockwork opened his hands and the Ghost King’s Crown materialized in his hands. “If you accept your claim to the King’s Cown, it will revitalize your core and your life would be saved.”
Danny blinked.
“By sealing Pariah Dark, you won by proxy and established a legitimate claim to the throne. The Zone has been without a king for millennia, most have forgotten the old rules. Those who remembered were not too keen on a half-ghost child assuming leadership and kept you in the dark. If Plasmius ends your life then your claim transfers over to him, which he is aware of. It had been his plan all along to trick you into defeating Pariah so he could steal the Crown from you at a later date, a much easier opponent.”
Danny’s mind was overloaded with information, he didn’t know what to focus on first. He stared at his 17 seconds from death face and tried to process it all. Crown? Claim? Vlad?
“Of course,” Clockwork tutted, “he didn’t plan on your dying and in such a gruesome fashion. If he kills you and takes your claim, he would spend his remaining years ruling the Ghost Zone in a just, controlled fashion for your memory. He destroys all the stable portals and keeps the ghost and human worlds separate.” Clockwork became and old man and titled his head, “it’s not a bad timeline, all things considered.”
“And if I take it?” Danny asked quietly.
“You’re compassionate, brave and motivated, you have all the makings of a revolutionary king,” Clockwork smiled. “The Zone would experience and unprecedented era of peace, there would be positive interactions between human and ghosts for the first time since life and death split into two. Your name would spoken with reverence for the rest of time.”
“But I don’t want to be king,” Danny frowned.
“I know, I’m sorry,” Clockwork stated. “Which is why I am giving you the choice. If you pass peacefully there will be no one to claim the Crown and life will continue on, ghost attacks and all. If Plasmius kills you, he becomes an effective but unmemorable king. If you take the Crown, you can get the chance to tell Sam and Tucker how much you love them.”
Danny rubbed at his face, he didn’t want to die but he’d be sealing away his entire future with a move like this. He didn’t even know if the Crown would let him go with death, maybe he’d die and be stuck as the Ghost King until his core finally gave out lord in who knows how long. Eternity was an awful long time to carry such a responsibility. He couldn’t bring himself to ask, too afraid of the answer.
“Is there ever a timeline I became an astronaut?” He asked instead. Clockwork hummed, seemingly unsurprised by Danny’s non-sequitur.
“Yes, in one of the few universes where you never walked into the portal. You never go into space what with human politics putting a halt on the programs but you work for NASA. You leave Amity Park at 17 and don’t come back save for your parents’ dual funeral.” He paused and Danny felt read down to his very bones, “from the moment you became half ghost you were always heading for this moment. The circumstances varied but it always came down to you and the Crown. Time is straining to continue, to see how this drama plays out. Will you accept it and all the joy and grief that comes with it?”
Danny looked over at Vlad, still mid-sneer but there was a scared desperation in his face. He and Vlad sniped at each other all the time but Danny didn’t really hate him and he didn’t think Vlad did either. Leaving him alone, plus making him be king was a heavy burden to put on his enemy.
Sam and Tuck probably wouldn’t recover from this, he’d put them through so much already but he just knew that they’d never be the same. Could he do that to them? Take the easy way out and leave them to suffer? Mom and Dad didn’t deserve to come home to a dead son, the truth would come out and they’d never forgive themselves. Jazz certainly wouldn’t, she was 2 states over at University but he could already hear her angry, grief-stricken screams.
Death, death was quiet. It was quiet and merciful and sad, but it was also easy. And Danny Fenton had never once taken the easy route. He reached out and took and the crown before shakily placing it on his head. He gasped, throwing his head back as his core swelled, taking up residence once more right next to his heart. Clockwork smiled, looking like the cat who ate the canary.
“The Crown of Fire, pardon me the Crown changes with each core, the Crown of Ice is now yours as is the Zone. Your reign begins now but so too does the rest of your life. People are waiting for you. Time in.” Danny slammed back into awareness on the floor of his parents’ lab, the floor he’d almost died on twice.
He sat up as cold radiated off his body, causing frost to crawl down his arms and along the floor. Sam, Tucker and Vlad, who’d been frozen up until now, jumped back to life. There was a new, familiar weight on his head that he didn’t dare acknowledge.
He squeezed his eyes shut and said a silent goodbye to a quiet, normal life. It wouldn’t be all bad, he could be happy like this but the Crown still felt like a iron manacle around his neck. But he got used to the ghost powers, he could get used to this too. Maybe one day he won’t look at the stars and say ‘what if?’
“Danny!” Sam shouted, throwing herself into his arms soon followed by Tucker. Their warm weight, their relieved sobs, their shaky breaths in his air, now this was something worth living for. He squeezed them tightly.
“But how dude, you were at death’s door!” Tucker asked, still not letting go.
“You accepted the Crown,” Vlad said evenly, “I wasn’t aware you even knew about your claim. Who told you?”
“You don’t know everything, Vlad,” Danny sighed, sitting himself upright. Ugh his shirt was covered in blood and ectoplasm. He needed to trash these clothes before his parents freaked. And find a way to hide the floating ice crown on his head.
“Even an old man can be surprised every now and again,” Vlad said wearily. He stood up to his full height before startling Danny by dipping down to one knee. “Then allow me to be the first to welcome my new king and wish him well.”
“I thought you wanted this,” Danny questioned.
“I do, I did,” Vlad said, unusually off balance. “To be quite honest, I’m not sure how to feel about it but, right now, I’m just immeasurably happy you’re alive, little badger. Now I best be off, enjoy your kingdom, my liege, I’ll be sure to come bother you some time soon.” Vlad disappeared in a swirl of pink leaving just him, Sam and Tucker still clinging to him.
Danny may have a kingdom, a job he didn’t want and his whole life decided in a spur of the moment choice, but he also had something very important. He squeezed his friends tightly.
“I love you guys, thank you for being my friends even though I have the worst ideas for activities. Dying? On a Sunday night? How lame is that?” Sam laughed, a bit hysterical but it was real and it made Danny feel weightless.
“Don’t do that again, buddy,” Tucker breathed into his shoulder. “So you gonna explain what just happened and why you’re apparently the Ghost King or something?”
“Yeah, yeah I will but let’s get changed first. Mom and Dad will be home soon and I think I’m going to need to have a conversation with them about my new job.”
ii. apocalypse now & again
(pt. i)
Kara woke up and realized that she was going to die.
Too many of the drones had survived the explosions and were still closing in on her. What little strength she had left after quite literally digging her own grave was presently and painstakingly strained just from her efforts to climb onto her knees. And on top of all that—of everything that possibly could have gone wrong for her in this moment—her helmet was cracked.
The abstract red numbers warning Kara of the kryptonite levels in the area seemed redundant now, what with that unmistakable chill already flooding her bloodstream.
“… Alex,” Kara gasped out, barely able to hear herself over the ringing in her ears. “Hey, Alex… Are you there?”
Her words were met with not one whisper or even a crackle of static, and for once, Kara was inconsolably disappointed to hear no one yelling back at her. With her teeth gritted, she shoved herself off the ground as hard as she could, drifting barely a foot into the air before the first drone crashed into the back of her head.
Kara toppled back onto the ground, knees skidding across the rubble in a shower of hot sparks. The impact had her head reeling, her mouth filling with a taste that she was now idly recognizing as blood. But there was no time to consider any of that as the drone doubled back. Kara scrambled out of the way, narrowly avoiding another collision, only to be struck by a second drone smashing right against her ear.
Out of breath but swearing, Kara whirled around and snagged the fast approaching drone into a bear hug, squeezing and squeezing until it crunched in her arms with a frantic whir. Then with a burst of heat vision, she shattered the other as it came straight for her face.
Kara used her heat vision to pick off several more drones from a distance, but of course, more and more just showed up to take their place, never wavering, never slowing… and eventually, Kara just had to laugh. Because her exhaustion was catching up to her. And Alex was hundreds of miles away. And to get out of here alive, Kara would have to somehow defeat the entire horde of drones, while all they had to do was wreck her suit a little more.
Though admittedly, it’d be overkill at this point, given the crack now spiderwebbing across the glass visor of Kara’s helmet.
Either way, it was over.
--
So, Kara laughed, grabbed at her chest in a reflexive gesture only to meet the unforgiving metal of her suit, then dropped to her knees. “Alex!” she shouted herself hoarse, because maybe if said loudly enough, the words would still be lingering in the air by the time her sister arrived. “Alex, I’m sorry, okay? You were right, and I’m sorry!”
Then she just waited—chest heaving, eyes narrowed but never blinking despite the heat pricking at the corners—because she definitely had to see this through to the bitter fucking end. That much, she owed everyone, including herself.
Except the end didn’t come.
Not this time anyway.
No, instead came a silver sphere, emerging seemingly out of thin air to hover right before Kara’s face. It flashed a blinding white just once, and everything fell absolutely silent and still. Kara’s suit powered down completely, the drones collectively dropped from the air like marionettes with cut strings, and all the lights in the immediate vicinity blinked out.
Laughter welling up all over again, Kara could only collapse onto her side in something akin to sheer relief.
The first person to occur to her, of course, was Alex, who had already saved her ass from similar scrapes on many occasions. But that couldn’t be it. Alex was too far away. It’s why Kara had to take on this mission on her own in the first place.
Then she considered maybe Winn or James, which made even less sense, given how the deceased hardly ever came back to do things like save people’s lives. Not even hers. Not even in the most dire of situations. That’s, unfortunately, just not how life worked these days.
Then she considered Alex again because the kryptonite was clearly bleeding into her brain now, and it was getting rather difficult to remember why it couldn’t have been Alex who’d just saved her. Maybe Kara did shout loud enough after all…
But then, a set of footfalls drew near, metal scraping against metal at a steady pace until a heavy boot struck Kara firmly in the chest, flipping her onto her back where she settled with a grunt.
“So glad I got to you first,” came a self-assured drawl, and Kara promptly found herself face to face with a handheld cannon of sorts. “Would be a pity to come all this way and not get to kill you myself.”
And… Kara’s jaw just dropped.
Not because of the words, nor the intentions behind them—though perhaps they both merited some attention as well—but that voice.
Kara gaped up at her supposed knight in shining, lead-lined armor because her voice—that low, husky tone paired with that very specific lilting cadence—was making her reconsider some very fundamental things about how the world might work.
Namely, that people wouldn’t come back from the dead just to save her life.
Mind still reeling away, Kara tried to sit up, only to be slammed back into the ground, hard.
“Down, girl,” Lena said, grinding her boot into Kara’s chest, the weight of her entire body behind the gesture. But that was fine.
It was fine because Kara could still draw some breath into her lungs, could still use some of that breath to talk, and she could certainly still say some things that she hadn’t uttered aloud in many a year. Like her late wife’s name, for instance.
The cannon in Kara’s face wavered, but didn’t lower. “Shut up,” Lena hissed down at her. “Don’t talk. Don’t even think.”
“So… it is you…” Kara said, and she gently wrapped her fingers around Lena’s ankle—the only part of her that she could still reach from her position—and just cried.
With a startled gasp, Lena stumbled away, wrenching herself out of Kara’s grip. “What the fuck…? What is wrong with you?”
“Nothing, nothing,” Kara sobbed out, trying not to choke on her own tears and snot and the slight taste of blood still lingering on her tongue. She suddenly, irrationally, wished that she could just take off her clunky suit. Just to eliminate some of that distance between her and Lena. Just so she could touch the chain hanging around her neck without any hindrance. “Just… just wanted to say, hi.”
Lena kept her distance, studying Kara in a stony silence, and Kara started to see things that she should probably would have noticed sooner if her body weren’t actively shutting down on her. Like the green glow of Lena’s weapon and the kryptonite cartridges strapped to her belt. Or that she was clearly wearing a lexo-suit. Or how the swirly edges of her own vision were starting to darken, and how the chill of kryptonite was currently all she could feel.
“Hey,” Kara called out, sniffling only slightly now. “Am I dreaming?”
“… No.”
Kara nodded thoughtfully to herself. “Okay, cool, cool… So, I think I might be dying then.”
“Yeah,” Lena said, after a brief pause. “Probably.”
“Cool.” Kara tried to flash a thumbs up, but no part of her body wanted to cooperate anymore. Her exhaustion had eaten up all her drive. “Hey, can you tell Alex something for me?”
Lena sighed, but she finally stepped closer, practically in reach. “Okay, sure.”
Kara fumbled for some words and the correct order that one might put them in, but then Lena took off her helmet, and nothing else mattered anymore. Because Kara was perfectly content to just watch that ripple of dark hair, streaked with a light gray that was just… nice to look at.
She never got to see her Lena’s hair do that.
//
Kara’s shoulder was being shaken so violently that she had no choice but to open her eyes and see Alex’s worry-creased face peering down at her.
“Dumbass…” Alex grumbled, releasing Kara’s shoulder with a dirty scowl. “That’s the last time I let you go anywhere without me.”
“Whatever you say, director.” Kara laughed, but it hurt. She then tried to do a salute, but her everything was still too weak to move apparently. But at least she was still alive.
… Wait.
Kara repeatedly tried to sit up on her bed, and Alex repeatedly shoved her right back down until she gave up. But still, she had to check, had to know that it wasn’t all just a dream.
“Where’s Lena?” she demanded, and the look that Alex gave her in response was so deeply pained that Kara almost felt pathetic for asking.
“… Kara.”
“No, I saw her, Alex,” Kara said, shaking her head, then immediately stopping when her entire body somehow got dizzy from it. “Shit. Ow, ow… But wait, no—But seriously, I saw her, okay?”
“I’m not surprised that you did. You almost died, Kara. Actually, I’m pretty sure that you were dead for a few minutes back there. Again, I say, you fucking dumbass.”
“But I didn’t die. Because she saved me,” Kara insisted. “No, seriously! She took out all the drones with some sort of EMP device, and, and… we talked! And she had gray hair, and I think maybe laugh lines? And yeah, I almost died because my helmet got cracked and stuff. But now, I’m here and I’m fine, so… everything’s fine, right?”
Alex frowned, then somehow settled on the least important part of Kara’s briefing, “You cracked your helmet?”
“Ugh, yeah. The glass visor part. When I fell,” Kara said, waving her hand dismissively. “So sorry about that, by the way.”
“Suit looked fine when we got to you,” Alex said with a shrug, before irritably exclaiming, “Jesus christ, Kara, enough! I’ll just have a guy get the helmet for you, okay? So, just stop trying to get up already.”
Huffing, Kara fell back onto her bed with her arms folded and waited. But when someone eventually showed up with her helmet in tow, she was surprised to see that it was somewhat worse for the wear but perfectly intact. Even up close, with the helmet out the tech’s hands and in her own, Kara couldn’t detect even the slightest blemish in the glass.
Pouting ever so slightly, Kara shoved the helmet back into the tech’s arms.
“… Satisfied?” Alex asked, rolling her eyes when Kara just shrugged one shoulder. “Great. Listen… You just need to get some rest, okay? Once you’re back to full strength, we can work through your… you know, memories together. And hopefully, it’ll make more sense by then. Sound good?”
Kara just nodded, suddenly all too willing to be left to her own devices in the relative quiet and darkness. She accepted a gentle shoulder squeeze and the promise of another session with the sun lamps within the hour, and just curled up under the sheets.
It’s not like she hadn’t conjured up images of Lena before. Kara had been close to death enough times that it was only inevitable that she’d fall back onto memories of her dead wife at some point or another. But this was different. Whenever her brain was just playing tricks on her, Lena appeared to her the way Kara remembered her: warm and loving, bright green eyes, long dark hair smelling of lavender, and alive and young.
Never before had Kara encountered an appropriately aged version of Lena, with creases gathered around her eyes and forehead, hair gloriously faded into the most lovely blend of light grays and white amongst all that black… The Lena that could have been if only she had lived out all these past years alongside Kara.
And she was never in a lexo-suit, of all things. Lena was always wearing one of her classic pencil skirts or Kara’s NCU sweatshirt, or something. Oh, and of course, her wedding band.
Instinctively, the same way she always did when it occurred to her, Kara reached for the chain around her neck, seeking out the familiar weight of the rings that hung from there… only to jolt upright with a gasp that dried up her entire throat.
She ripped the necklace off her head, almost snapping the chain, which in and of itself was telling. Because her chain had been forged out of an extraterrestrial metal amalgamation that not even the Girl of Steel would have been able to break. The one now clutched in her hand, however, was just plain white gold.
Heart pounding in her ears, Kara stared down at an engagement ring fitted with a modest cut of diamond, somehow occupying the very spot where two simple wedding bands—hers and her Lena’s—should have been. Then something drove her to check for an inscription, and sure enough, engraved on the inside of the ring was a series of kryptonian characters, denoting a term of endearment that Kara had never used, but apparently could have in another world altogether: my dearest heart.
