context and explanation: EA's quarterly earnings conference call for Q4 and FY 2024 starts in just under 15 minutes at 2pm PT. before the calls start, some of the associated files/documents pertaining to the call get put up on EA's website. The "Core Business and FY25 Title Slate" image is from the Earnings Slides. the quote under the table reads "We have two unannounced titles in FY25: one partner title expected in Q4, and one owned IP title, which is not included in the above table. We expect to provide more details on timing at a later date." DA:D is an owned IP title of EA. The Twitter user asks Jeff Grubb (a games media person who revealed the title of DA:D) if the referenced "one owned IP title" is DA:D. Jeff confirms that this does indeed refer to Dragon Age: Dreadwolf, meaning that this slide confirms that DA:D is planned to release in FY25 (Financial Year 25). for info, I think FY25 runs from 1st April 2024 until 31st March 2025.

Tumblr media
You had never thought a trip to the vending machine could be so eventful.
It had been lunch break, and you found yourself wandering towards the machine, money in hand as your eyes trailed the snacks. It had become routine to sneak away during lunch hours for this, enjoying the fresh autumn breeze as you bought your snacks. It had always given you time to think and the time to recompose yourself when you didn’t have a clue what to do.
Usually it also provided you with time alone.
That wasn’t the case today though. Standing in front of the vending machines was Kageyama Tobio, frantically pushing the button for milk with a grumpy sort of scowl on his face. From the distance you stood, you could make out his height and the way he tapped his foot continuously, as if he didn’t have the time to wait for the milk to be dispensed from the spot.
Strolling up to the spot, you stood silently next to him, watching the way he retrieved the milk from the slot wordlessly as he walked away, not even a glance in your direction.
You knew full well who he was. In fact, you could barely walk through the halls of school without hearing a murmur about the prodigy setter and his closed off ways. The girls found him intriguing from afar, and while they never dared to approach him, they all wanted to.
You hadn’t really understood what they saw in him. He was average...if not below that in academics, and he seemed to dedicate most of his time to volleyball, not caring much for other people. He didn’t seem to have many friends, and was almost always grumpy.
All of this should’ve been reason enough to avoid him, and yet you couldn’t help but be intrigued. There was something about him that was different. You just needed to find out what that was.
The next day came around, and sure enough, he stood at the machine again, toe-tapping as his milk was dispensed from the slot. This time his eyes scanned the courtyard as if he was seeking something before they finally landed on you.
You weren’t prepared for the full impact of his gaze. It was calculated and pointed, with some sort of intent that was expressed in every inch of those dark blue eyes. You weren’t put off by it.
In fact, it was charming in its own way.
“Are you looking for something Kageyama?” You asked as you walked towards him, pulling a few yen out of your pocket. “You’re staring.”
“I’m not.” He deadpanned, his eyes still trained on you as you selected a snack from the machine’s buttons. “I see you everywhere. Who are you?”
You hadn’t expected that. You knew he was observant...when it came to volleyball specifically, but never realized how it translated anywhere else. “I’m Y/L/N Y/N.”
You weren’t sure what else to say to him. Gently grabbing your snack, you politely nodded at him before leaving him behind, the thoughts rapidly accumulating in your brain. Did he notice you the entire time? Why did he ask? Did he know something? Was he planning to use you as some example to the other girls who wanted to know him?
You wish you had an answer.
Unfortunately, you couldn’t think of any.
Tumblr media
It had been two weeks since you had met Kageyama by the vending machines. It had now become routine to expect him there during your lunch breaks, milk box in hand as he regarded your very presence with something that felt a whole lot like curiosity. Every now and then he’d offer commentary on the mundane happenings of Karasuno, or ask about you, but you weren’t sure how you could hold a conversation with just these things.
“Kageyama.” You nodded, strolling towards the machine as you always did. He whipped around almost immediately, offering a solemn nod in return, clutching his milk box.
“Y/L/N.” He murmured, taking a sip of his box.
“Have you ever thought about love?” You found yourself asking, internally screaming at the word choice. Great, now he was going to think that you were some crazy person.
“I think so…?.” Was what he offered in response. His features seemed to soften at this question though as he scrunched his brows in thought. “What type of love?”
You raised a brow at him in question. “Kageyama...what type of love are you talking about?”
“Well...I love volleyball and milk.” He shrugged. “That counts.”
“That...wasn’t the type I was referring to.” You said, suppressing the laughter that bubbled into your chest. “I was talking about the other kind.”
“The other kind is stupid.” Kageyama replied instantaneously. “There’s nothing special to it.”
You felt confusion seep into your system before you quieted it, letting your mind wander. With Kageyama’s status, you assumed that he’d at least thought of the concept at least once, although it seemed that he’d never even pondered the idea altogether!
“You’d have to feel it to come to that conclusion,” you countered, “Have you?”
“No,” he scoffed, “It’s still stupid.”
“Why?” You asked, feeling the curiosity surface. “Any specific reason?”
“Why would anyone want to dedicate all their time to another person?” Kageyama asked straight back, his gaze unwavering. “I just don’t see the point.”
You stared back at him, feeling the challenge bubble in your veins. “I bet...I can make you fall in love with someone by the end of the school year.”
At that moment, the boy in front of you looked thoroughly surprised, throwing his empty milk box at the garbage can nearby. He seemed speechless to some extent, as if he wasn’t able to process the words that had just left your mouth.
“And what happens if you can’t?” He asked, hesitantly bringing his gaze to your face. “What then?”
“I’ll buy you milk for a whole month.” You placed your hands on your hip as you kept your glare firm. “I stick to that.”
“Okay then,” he sighed, “Game on.”
With a shake of your hands, you cemented your fate.
You would win that bet. That much was certain.
Tumblr media
“What’s this Y/L/N?” Kageyama asked, pointing at the piece of paper you held at him. “How are you going to win a bet with this?”
The two of them stood in the courtyard of Karasuno, the fresh autumn breeze rippling the paper you held in your hand. It had been a good day so far, and Kageyama had surprisingly stuck to his resolve, meeting you at the vending machine when he could’ve easily avoided you.
It was always more fun to challenge a competent opponent.
“This is the romance checklist.” You grinned proudly. “This has all the things we need to get you to fall in love.”
“How is it fair if you don’t do the checklist’s things too?”
“Well, that’s why I’m doing them with you.” You responded, already anticipating these types of questions. “I drafted the checklist off of the things I’ve observed over the years that should totally lead to feelings of love!”
“Whatever.” Kageyama said, his blue eyes scanning the paper’s contents. “How do you plan to do this?”
“We follow the steps.” You nodded. “Since I’m doing this with you, it’ll be foolproof.”
“Y/L/N...what if we competed against each other?” He mumbled. “We follow the checklist and use it against each other. Whoever falls in love first loses.”
“Do you really want to risk that?” You smirked, “That’s a bold move you’re making.”
Kageyama stood up straighter at this, the challenge burning deep in his eyes. “I’m going to win, so it won’t be an issue.”
“Suit yourself,” you grinned. “I’ll be winning this anyways.”
He simply smirked as he looked down at the paper, the promise of a challenge fresh and bright between them.
Tumblr media
STEP ONE: MEET SOMEONE
After a long time, you had finally gotten some free time away from schoolwork and the obligations that pinned you down. It was a rare occurrence with the amount of pressure that the college prep class placed on you, and you intended to make the most of it.
You found yourself on the pathway of a cafe you used to frequent in the summer with your friends. It had always been a place to collect your thoughts and let your worries float away with every sip of one of the immaculately crafted beverages that they offered there. You felt your lips twitch in an involuntary smile at the memories.
“Y/L/N?” You heard a voice call out, a shocking contrast to the normal chattering you heard within the shop. Looking up, you were met with Kageyama’s eyes, narrowed and confused as you sat at the table frozen. “What are you here for?”
“It's a break for me,” you shrugged, “I come here all the time. I haven’t seen you here before.”
“They have good drinks,” Kageyama replied bluntly. A few beats of silence passed between them, with neither of them knowing what to add to the conversation.
“You can sit down with me.” You offered, gesturing to the empty seat across from you. “The more the merrier.”
He didn’t question this as he slid into the seat, fingers drumming on the table as he looked at the window. From your point of view, it was almost picturesque the way he managed to appear. His blue eyes were focused on the trees outside, and his posture was ever so casual and relaxed as he sat there, as if he had no other care in the world.
It was unfair how model-like he managed to appear, even despite the fact he wasn’t trying.
Ah. Perhaps this is what the girls at school noticed.
Once the drinks arrived at your table, the two of them drank in comfortable silence, admiring the flavors on their tongues as their surroundings continued on as normal. You didn’t feel the need to contribute anything to the silence, finding it calming in its own right.
“So Kageyama, are you feeling anything yet?” You teased, setting down your half-empty cup.
“No.” He admitted, setting down his drink as well. “I am supposed to?”
“Well technically no, but it’d be good if you did.” You chuckled, finding amusement in the cluelessness of his ways. “Step one of the romance checklist: meet somebody.”
“We already met though.” He countered, “How does this count as anything?”
“Well, we just encountered each other out of nowhere.” You smiled, “That counts as a meeting in my book.”
He wrapped his mind around this information, nodding solemnly. “I guess so then. I still don’t feel anything.”
“Neither do I.” You said, willing the slight butterflies in your stomach to subside. It was really nothing. This was simply a chance meeting, nothing more than luck and fate that had you encounter each other today of all days.
You shouldn’t have been affected this quickly. You felt far too warm, far too...fuzzy, for a meeting of chance. It was simply far too intimate.
Well, it seemed that Kageyama had gotten the one upon you at this stage.
You’d beat him next time. You knew you would.
Tumblr media
STEP TWO: FLIRT
“You look good today Kags,” you smirked, feeling a sense of satisfaction creep up in your veins at his flushed cheeks,
Over the course of the weeks spent together, you had been able to learn more about the mysterious boy in front of you and had even formed a friendship of sorts. For starters, he was flustered very easily, which is why you decided to make your move so early in the morning.
“I look like how I do every day, dumbass!” He growled, the red deepening in his cheeks when you merely winked in response.
Ah yes. He tended to insult those he befriended. That was yet another endearing thing about the boy in front of you.
“No, something is different today,” you commented, “Did you do something with your hair?”
“No,” he frowned, the flush never subsiding from his cheeks. “Why are you doing this to me?”
“I’m just saying genuine things you know.” You laughed, punching his shoulder casually. “Besides, I think I’m succeeding so far.”
“Succeeding? This is that stupid checklist again, isn’t it?” He sighed. “Step two: flirting. What is the point of this again?”
“It’s to show interest.” You remarked. “Besides, if you want me to fall for you, you’re going to at least have to act like you’re interested in me. I know it’s working on you so far.”
“No it’s not!” He yelled, although the defense was half-hearted. You knew he was merely putting up a front. You could tell it from his body posture alone.
You had the upper hand right now.
You waved him goodbye as you entered the Karasuno grounds, climbing the stairs to reach your class as he walked in the opposite direction. Even if you had the upper hand right now, you knew that you had to be on-guard the rest of the day.
If there was one thing you knew very well in the time you had spent with Kageyama, it was that he was extremely competitive. There was no way he’d ever go down without a fierce fight, especially when a month’s worth of milk was on the line.
You had been absolutely right to doubt him.
When lunchtime rolled around, he stood at the vending machine like he always did, leaning against it casually as he waited for you, his focus placed on the entrance.
The first thing you noticed was how calm he was. There was none of his usual frantic energy or the practiced insults that you threw back at one another. He simply stood there, content, as he watched you make your entrance.
The second thing you noticed was how an unconscious smile crept onto his face when you waved at him and slipped away the minute your eyes darted to his mouth. He sipped his milk casually, although you knew that internally, he was definitely scheming.
He could be a gremlin if left untapped.
You were about to purchase your snack in silence, thinking about all the ways he could win against you when you felt his hand on your shoulder. Turning around, you saw him holding out a container of your favorite snack, handing it to you wordlessly.
What?
“I thought I would get it today,” he shrugged, taking a sip of his milk. “You’ve bought me milk sometimes. It’s only fair.”
He didn’t consider it much of a big deal, but you felt your heart begin to accelerate in its pace at the thoughts that came flying into your head.
He had paid attention to your favorite snack? He had actually cared about when you bought him milk?
He noticed all of this?
“You...have a nice smile.” He mumbled, a flush rising onto his cheeks once again. You felt yourself fluster a bit at the compliment, not used to hearing it that often.
“Uhhh thanks.” You exhaled, not knowing how to respond to such an out-of-the-blue remark. “Your smile looks a lot like the Cheshire cat you know.”
For a moment his face was contorted into an expression of horror before he laughed a bit, the low chuckles sending heat straight to your cheeks.
Damn it. His laugh was adorable.
It was a low chiming sound, but it still managed to uplift your spirits in the brief time that you heard it. It was absolutely perfect.
You’d like to hear it again if you could.
A small smile was on his face as he looked to the ground, thinking about something while you took the time to really look at him. Behind the stone exterior, was someone talented, clueless, and amusing in every way you could possibly imagine.
You noticed how his posture mirrored yours, and the way how he smiled when your eyes finally met his own.
Damn it! He got the one-up on you. Again.

STEP THREE: GO ON THRILLING DATES
“Tobio! Let’s go on this one!” You yelled as you dragged him towards the large rollercoaster that caught your eye.
It was a beautiful Saturday with the most perfect weather. Sunny skies met a fresh breeze as you dragged Kageyama around the amusement park you had insisted on going to together. He kept with your quick pace as you went from ride to ride, never once letting go of his hand.
If anything, you were more confused why he didn’t comment on the fact that you had been holding hands that long. Rather he silently followed you from ride to ride, occasionally commenting on how small it looked for them.
From where you stood, the rollercoaster looked positively incredible with the multiple loops and drops in its track. This certainly fit the bill for thrilling. Maybe Kageyama could finally agree to ride this one.
“Y/N, do we really have to do this one?” He asked, his gaze not tearing away from the ride. “Doesn’t it look a bit too small for us?”
“Well if it’s too small, then we can still ride it as a joyride, don’t you think?” You grinned as you shoved him into the line of the coaster. Soon enough, it was your turn as you were ushered into the seats while the employees strapped you and Kageyama into the rollercoaster.
The wait was excruciating, with every second that passed sending a wave of anticipation and adrenaline through your system. Looking to your side, you saw Kageyama’s face, which was composed, even though his fingers drummed rapidly on the bar.
Was he nervous?
Hesitantly, you reached to clasp your hands together, relishing in the feeling of your palm on his as the rollercoaster suddenly began moving, bringing you up the tall lift hill.
“Tobio, are you okay?” You questioned as you neared the top, the grip he had on your hand tightening ever so slightly.
“I’m fine!” He yelled, just as the roller coaster fell over the lift hill, sending them into a plummeting drop.
You felt the exhilarating feeling of soaring as the ride propelled you forward, shouts of glee leaving your mouth ever so often. On the other hand, all you heard from Kageyama was the occasional shout of horror when they encountered yet another drop on the track, the grip he had on your hand deathly tight.
“Tobio! You’re afraid of rollercoasters?!” You shouted as you were guided into a loop.
“No I’m not!” He shouted back, shutting his eyes when he was finally upright again. “They just make me feel like I’m about to die!” When he opened his eyes, they first found yours in a look that was both petrified and fond. “I think I lost the bet!”
“You did what?!” You yelled as the wind rippled in your ears again.
“The bet Y/N! I think I’m in love with you!” He yelled. “I thought I should tell you before we die!”
You felt your heart soar at the words that had just been exchanged, a testament to the budding feelings you had felt for months around him.
“We’re not going to die.” You sighed as the ride finally slowed, feeling exhilarated as you smiled at him. “I love you too.”
Stepping off the rollercoaster, Kageyama was more silent than anything, red flush adorning his cheeks as you massaged soothing circles onto his hand. “We both lost it in the end.” You laughed.
“I think it was worth it,” he chuckled, the beautiful chime, showing you that he meant every word.

Wonderous gowns spun with their wearers under the warm light of the lanterns that decorated the walls. Laughter echoed down the halls laced with mirth, all was well.
The High King of Elfhame stood making conversation with a head of one of the lower courts, his tail curled around his calf. Cardan hummed in agreement, not bothering to pay too much attention to the actual conversation. He swirled the wine in his goblet, the dark, bitter liquid aching to bite his tongue. He made comments every once in a while, and though he made a fair conversationalist when he was intrigued in the subject, it wasn’t uncommon to find that the High King’s attention lay elsewhere.
Jude was discussing something with someone Cardan couldn’t see, their person blocked by the bodies dressed in extravagant clothing that rested in between them. Jude didn’t seem to be having a particularly happy conversation, stress eating her nerves, her hands restless at her sides.
Cardan was sure he felt a brush against his hand that held his wine, but found nothing that could’ve caused it when he took another glance. The lord he spoke with cleared their throat. Cardan dragged his gaze to meet theirs, wishing he could be many other places than anywhere that involved having this conversation. Whatever this conversation was, anyways. He couldn’t be sure.
Cardan excused himself the first moment he saw an opening that wouldn’t have been too insulting. He made his way across the room to Jude, draining the dregs of his wine in one long sip. His steps faltered slightly, his head spun. Maybe he’d had just a little more to drink than he’d realized.
Cardan handed the empty goblet off to someone, though he wasn’t entirely sure who, and wrapped his arms around his wife from behind, his hands resting on her hips. He heard the sharp intake of her breath, felt the small gasp that left her lips. He rested his chin on her shoulder, a sight that was more common than many liked to admit — their seeing the High King bent over the High Queen, only so he may rest himself on her. Only so he may touch her. Cardan smiled into her neck.
Jude patted his cheek, pet his hair. Cardan thought he’d heard her excuse herself from the conversation, considered telling her not to bother, when she’d turned into him. That made it quite difficult for him to rest his weight on her. Her turning threw him off balance, but he held his ground.
Cardan took Jude’s hand and placed his other on her hip. Jude raised a brow, curious. Cardan needn’t have even shot the musicians that lingered in the corner of the revel a look, his eyes never leaving Jude’s. His gaze was intense; it bore into her, it crawled inside her chest and squeezed her heart. Cardan spun her as the music started. Soft and slow and calm; and if you paid attention, if you listened closely, you could hear that his steps were in time with the rain battering against the stain glass windows. As dawn rose, the sunlight streaming in cast a colourful array onto the ground, bouncing off of dresses and illuminating faces once lit by soft moonlight, now lit by rainbows. One by one, others grabbed partners and joined.
Cardan smiled, his behaviour oddly intrepid. It was not that he was never bold, far from it. But to smile so openly, to laugh so loudly. He spun her again, entwining their fingers when they met again. He quickened his pace, pushing the beat of the song, silently urging others to do the same, the music racing in time to match. Jude glanced between him and those around them.
Jude was not entirely practiced in this particular dance, but Cardan didn’t let her falter, didn’t give her the chance. And damn, Cardan’s smile was contagious. Jude smiled, too. And, admittedly, she was concerned with his behaviour at first. Then, she smelled the liquor on his breath. Smelled the bittersweet wine as he leaned in to peck her on the tip of her nose.
So Jude let him twirl her around the room. She let him pick the dance and the pace. She’d let him spin her until her stomach flipped, so long as he smiled like that.
It was wide, and warm. It was happy. And, even though Jude didn’t like to share Cardan, she didn’t mind sharing this. Sharing his smile, so blindingly beautiful, so soft and sweet that it could put many mortal candies to shame. So much so, that she dared say it fought for dominance with every sweet thing Jude could recall. The candies, yes. But perhaps it was also Oak’s giggles, tiny kittens, small flowers that Cardan often forged to scatter in her hair, her not finding them until much later.
So long as Cardan kept looking at her like that, would she play his drunken game. Tonight, Jude did not bear a dress. Instead, a dark green doublet adorned with golden fastenings incased her body, dark trousers dripping down her legs, meeting her black boots. Her black, soft leathered boots that Cardan had stolen from her one evening and returned with golden tips on their toes. Jude refused to let anyone else touch them because of it.
Cardan swept her off her feet, quite literally, and lowered her into a dip as far as he dared. Jude’s hair graced the floor, and she sent a playful scowl his direction. Lifting her again, he braced her hips with his hands and spun her around him in the air. Jude landed and fell back into the crease of his elbow, her body entirely reliant on Cardan’s balance. A sense of trust that her body learned to have, perhaps just a moment too late.
He twirled Jude on her toes, catching her in his other arm. Cardan bent down and kissed her nose again, a soft giggle passing his lips.
The song ended, the dance was over, and all had resumed their previous tasks. The soft chatter between the guests of the revel had steadily gone from a low murmur into an echoing madness of distorted voices. Cardan led Jude down the hall, slipping away from the festivities. He twirled her in the hall, his steps faltering slightly. As they progressed, soft laughs shared between them and gentle slaps on the shoulder, did they reach their chambers.
Cardan swept Jude into his arms and, tripping over his feet only once, did he make it to the bed they shared, setting her down gently among the soft coverlets as though she were the most fragile thing in the world. And, though he knew that was far from true, he’d be damned if he didn’t treat her in all the soft ways he truly believed she deserved. He removed his own crown, setting it on the bedside table, and then hers.
Cardan lifted a leg over her waist, straddling her. Jude cupped his face and brought his lips to hers. Cardan melted into her in a way that only she could make him. Jude hooked her hands around the back of his neck and wrapped her legs around his. Then, in one swift motion, she flipped him on his back, switching their respective positions. Jude sat on his stomach, taking his hands in hers. She rubbed her fingers over his knuckles gently, only meeting his eyes after she’d touched every last one. If she didn’t think the way he looked at her could’ve been any more intense before, she would’ve been horribly wrong.
It was nothing new, for him to look at her like she’d pieced the world together. But, perhaps because she was his did he look as though he’d break anything too close, anyone sending her a wrong look. And though he was all too aware of how Jude could handle herself, he was also aware of how that could be a horrible idea when the occasion arose.
With each of his hands in hers, Jude took both of Cardan’s hands above his head and pinned his wrists with one hand. She leaned in close, close enough to feel his breath hitch against her skin, brushed her nose along his. Brought her lips to his forehead, laced their fingers together.
Cardan’s eyes closed, a heat flushing in his cheeks staining them a brilliant pink. He could hear his heart hammer in his ears and worked one of his hands free from Jude’s grasp, much to her dismay, and began to work the clasps on the back of her doublet. She decided that made up for it, and trailed the hand that had previously held his now-free wrist down the buttons of his shirt. She worked the buttons one handedly, moving slower than Cardan did with the clasps on the bodice of her doublet. Jude worked one button free, the another. Cardan discarded her doublet on the floor, resting his hands on her hips and looking up at her in such horrible ways, with such an intensity that stirred her stomach.
“You’re drunk,” Jude said, brushing the hair out of his face.
“And you’re beautiful,” Cardan replied, sitting up under her. Jude slipped so they both sat, her hands falling to his shoulders. She wrapped her legs around him, his tail curling around her. Cardan smiled, resting his forehead against hers.
“Don’t change the subject.” Cardan kissed her sweetly then, his arms holding the small of her back. Jude wrapped her arms around the back of his neck, threading her fingers through his hair. He lifted a tendril of her hair, twisting it between his thumb and forefinger. Cardan brought up his other hand and twisted a loose braid into a lock of hair. Jude watched him, curiosity catching her tongue and holding her still. She took the braid in her hand, and untwisted it carefully, watching the curiosity spread like a fever between them. Jude shifted, twisting in place, her back to him.
Cardan raked his fingers through her hair, folding one strand over another, picking up some new ones, and dropping others. Jude huffed, blowing the hair out of her eyes. It landed back in its place, obscuring her vision and preventing her from moving it further. Every time she tried, Cardan batted her hand away; she was certain she could hear his frown.
There was a pull, somewhere deep inside her. It was like someone tied a tether to her waist, tugging every once in a while. Just enough to remind her, just enough to keep it on her mind. Cardan’s hands brushed against her neck, sweeping the hair up and letting it fall around her shoulders. He’d braided her hair into a crown. Cardan placed a hand just below each of her shoulders, rested his chin on the top of her head.
There was a sickeningly sweet smell of flowers, there was Cardan’s gentle breathing, as if he was falling asleep. His hands slipped, and took hers in his, holding her close. She could feel the thrum of his heart against her back, something deep and heavy, something unmatched to his breathing, his open smiles. Cardan chuckled.
“What’s so funny?” Jude said, contemplating answers. A whirlwind of possibilities flooded around her, and there were too many variables to come up with any single solution.
Cardan lifted his chin from the crown of her head, dropping to her shoulder. He smiled against her skin. “If I told you, it wouldn’t be very funny,” he said softly, sending a chill down Jude’s spine. She felt the goose flesh rise on her skin, felt the way Cardan’s smile widened against her neck. Jude could play this game too, she decided.
Lightning struck the valley nearby, illuminating the room. If even for a second, when Jude had turned to face him as the light peaked through the curtains, did she look so horribly, hauntingly beautiful. Thunder rumbled, loud and low; heavier than it should’ve been. Jude caught sight of a flower obscuring her vision in the ephemeral light and snatched it from her hair. It’s petals laced with soft enchantment, a certain kind of adoration blooming in her grip. Cardan tucked a piece of hair behind her ear, fingers lingering on the curve of her ear.
There was a knock at the door, and they made a silent agreement that whatever it was could wait until tomorrow. Cardan brought his lips to Jude’s temple, her cheek. Down to the corner of her jaw, chaste and sweet. Another knock.
A door opened, alarm bells ringing in Jude’s head. Something wasn’t right. It was as if the fire could sense the trepidation, the flicker in its flames mocking tumult. Cardan lifted Jude beside him swiftly, turning the coverlets over her chest as the Roach walked in. Upon realization, the scowl from Jude meant to match Cardan’s confusion, did he turn and face away. He cleared his throat, staring at the floor. “Jude, there is something I must show you,” he said, a hazardous caution in his voice. Without another word, he turned and left, leaving Jude and Cardan to their own.
Jude glanced at Cardan, who was too busy watching flowers bloom above their bed to notice that she’d gotten up. She slipped her doublet on again, fumbling with the clasps and took a step over to the entrance to one of the secret Court of Shadows rooms that the Roach had left open for her. Cardan stood, joining her, and was met with a firm hand on his chest. “You’re drunk,” Jude said, gently pushing him back onto the bed. With few options and little other thought, Cardan complied. Jude left down the hall, closing the door behind her.
The hallway walls were littered with heavy vines, dark and weighted. They swayed slightly, even without a breeze, as if saying “Hello.” Or maybe, “Goodbye.” Jude had been down these halls several times, might’ve been able to walk them blindly, though the lack of light from lanterns or torches nearly provided. The walk seemed to stretch uncharacteristically, something unusual for the short halls that wrapped around other rooms. When she reached the door at the end, the heavy wooden door towering over her, the vines reaching for her from the cracks in the walls; everything around her screaming, something wasn’t right.
Jude felt the dread coil in the bottom of her stomach, felt the anticipation build in her chest. She felt like she was going to burst. Jude reached for the door handle, the cold metal burning under her fingers. She opened the door, half expecting the coil of dread to jump out at her like a snake ready to strike.
The Ghost and the Roach stood behind a table, glanced between each other, then at her. Jude closed the door behind her and stopped short in front of them, raising a single brow and crossing her arms. It was unsettlingly silent, a single moment stretched into what felt like an hour. Something in the air shifted, and whatever this was, it was steadily becoming much bigger than having something just be wrong.
Jude raised her head, acknowledging whoever it need be, to whoever would tell her what was going on. The Ghost looked at the table in between them steadily, then at Jude. “Say someone was poisoned,” he said. Judes eyebrows knitted together. “Say there wasn’t an antidote. What would you do about it?”
“What’s this about?” Jude said, pinching the bridge of her nose. There was a pull again, something familiar, and strange. There was something at the back of her mind, like a word you can’t place, like a name you can’t recall. Something, but nothing.
No answer. They can’t lie, and they didn’t want to tell her the truth. Jude sighed at the realization and caved. “What’s this poison supposed to do?”
“Stop someone’s heart,” the Roach supplied, finally giving answer to one of Jude’s building questions.
Jude thought for a moment, staring off somewhere in the distance. “Let it,” she said, filling the growing silence that gnawed at everyone in the worst ways.
The Roach cleared his throat, again. “Let it stop their heart?” Did she realize how that sounded?
“Let it stop their heart,” Jude said again, as if her repeating would correct their misunderstanding. “Then,” she continued. “Restart it.”
The Ghost scoffed, mirroring Jude with crossed arms. “Bring someone back to life? You know that’s not possible.”
Jude cocked her head slightly, debating how she should answer the questions they didn’t ask. “In the mortal world,” she started. “There’s something called CPR. Basically, it restarts someone’s heart. But there’s a small timeframe where it works, and I can’t do it. Vivi might be able to, or maybe Heather.” The Roach turned to the Ghost and gave him a single nod, queuing him to leave. “Will someone tell me what’s going on?” She felt the heat rise in her voice, and felt no sympathy. What was this, and why wouldn’t they just tell her?
“Jude, listen—” the Roach said, not making eye contact. The Bomb walked in, promptly cutting him off. She nods too, something heavy and sorrowful. No one looked at Jude.
She stepped up and slammed her hands on the table. The sharp smack grabbed everyone’s attention, giving the Bomb and the Roach little room to do anything other than look at her. “What,” Jude said, a cold edge in her voice. “The Hell is going on?” She said the words slowly, hoping that if she’d said them clearly enough, they’d understand what she was saying. That they’d understand it wasn’t a request.
Thunder rumbled in the distance. The vines that clung to the walls shivered, seemingly from the chill in her voice. Another glance was exchanged.
The Bomb looked up at her, voice barely above a whisper. “It’s Cardan.”

Candy is Dandy but Liquor is Quicker
[Dead by Baelight’s Kinktober // Day 8 and 18 : Outfit/Skin, Cornered]

🖤  🖤   🖤 “Don’t come any closer,” you warned shakily, backing up against the boarded-up door as he stalked forward, every step radiating confidence. “Or you’ll what?” He asked, leaning in. “Arrest me?” Playfully rattling the costume handcuffs on your belt, he set his gun against the door. You stared up at him, eyes wide as saucers, and he just snorted, curling a finger in your hair. “Darlin’…” Tilting his head, his fingers traveled lower, slowly ghosting over your neck, your collarbone…. You inhaled sharply in frightened anticipation, goosebumps rising, only for him to skim over your chest entirely, plucking one of the mini bottles from your bandolier. “I would love…” Long, bony, but strangely elegant fingers unscrewed the cap, flicking it off where it clattered across the floor somewhere. “To see you try.” 🖤  🖤   🖤 Pairing: Deathslinger (Caleb Quinn) x F! Something… odd had been happening lately.
Not the cankerous growths and sickly orange flowers that were always so abundant this time of year - or whatever passed for a year in this everlasting hell. By no means was that unprecedented.
Ask anyone who’d been there long enough to know and they’d tell you; there was a certain… cyclicity to things. Recurring phenomenon - the red envelopes, the flowers, the mysterious gifts wrapped up like Christmas presents. Always sequential, always in order, like some crude imitation of seasons. (And for what? No one ever aged a day.)
No, this was something new.
And new, in the Entity’s realm, was never a good thing. But… You had to admit, this seemed mostly harmless.
Look - It’s not like you were ever really in control of what you wore here, anyway. Most of the time, you were just stuck with whatever clothes you were wearing when you rolled into the fog. Sometimes She (that omnipotent thing in the sky) threw you in something else. Nobody ever really paid it much mind. The Entity worked in mysterious ways. And people, frankly, had more important shit to worry about.
But then when the flowers started blooming this year, things got a little weird.
She -…
She started putting people in costumes.
Cheap polyester numbers, mostly - the kind you’d buy from a big-box store, straight from one of those awful clear vinyl bags.
…It was starting to look a lot like Halloween. Jack-o’-lanterns even began appearing, scattered around the campfire and adorning the generators.
And nobody knew what the fuck was going on. Hell, not everyone even knew what Halloween was. You had quite the diverse cast; some people weren’t even from the same world as you.
The general vibe around the campfire was just… mild amusement if anything. You had a chuckle, then moved on. That was just the way of things. Everyone had these… survivor blinders on. You guess it was hard to get phased by something so minor when you all got murdered on the daily, but…
But you weren’t content with that.
You always had trouble just accepting things at face value. You wanted to know why.
Like - was the Entity stroking out? Things always did get a little strange around this time. Almost as if She were sick.
It was rare, but there were these little… Well, Feng called them glitches, and it was apt a term as any. Just little things, here and there, like She couldn’t quite enforce the rules of her own game.
Almost everything in this world seemed to be harvested from people’s memories. So… Maybe she was starting to pull things at random. Spiraling.
Was this the synaptic failure of a dying god?
Probably not, but there was nothing to do besides let your mind wander, and it was the only theory you had.
And then….
Then She whisked you away to Frontierland in the gaudiest slutty sheriff costume known to man and pit you against the goddamn cowboy.
Yeah, no - that was about a step too far to have been a happy accident.
Maybe you were thinking too hard. Maybe She just had a fucked up sense of humor.
When the fog cleared, you found yourself in the saloon with the others. You half-heartedly laughed it off (“Yeah, yeah. Okay. Very funny.”) and then moved on. Business as usual.
But not before rolling your eyes and discreetly downing one of the liquor minis from the shitty novelty booze bandolier sewn to your costume behind everyone’s backs.
At least She had the decency to stock it.
You were finishing up cleansing a totem when you heard the telltale crack of a gunshot split the air from all the way across the map. Not anywhere close enough to be dangerous, but a dead giveaway as to who you were up against.
…And cold hard proof that your little outfit was far from coincidence. The literal and proverbial smoking gun.
The moment you heard it you deflated, head falling back.
Seriously? What the fuck was She playing at?
Why you?
It wasn’t much of a conscious decision; you found yourself plucking another bottle from your bandolier and knocking it back without a whole lot of thought. You were obviously going to need it. Staring blankly ahead, you incredulously shook your head as you thumbed the moisture from your lip.
Okay. Alright. That was it, for now, you decided.
The Entity gave you a fully loaded bandolier - seriously, you were armed to the teeth with the little mini bottles, to the point it was actually kind of heavy. But you already felt a little weak in the knees after just two shots. It had been a while, so your tolerance was understandably nil. You didn’t want to be useless to your team. More importantly, it now felt critical you get out of there without running into the killer.
The Deathslinger was one of those ones. Not overly talkative, like a couple of the killers were, but he definitely got a kick out of the whole thing. There was a stark difference between the two camps, so to speak - the ones who only seemed like they killed because they had to, and the ones who were completely in their element. And he was obviously one of the latter.
It was that goddamn laugh. Low and sultry. Chuckling whenever he hooked someone or when a survivor did something exceptionally dumb. Even when you weren’t the target of it, you’d come to associate it with pure humiliation.
And you just knew that he’d take one look at you, in your stupid sheriff costume, and… Oh. You were steaming mad only thinking about it.
So you made it your personal mission to avoid him this trial. And to do that, you had to actually get out. Which meant no more drinks for you!
You should have known She had other plans.
You did your best to keep a low profile, tried to make sure you were on the opposite side of the map from him at all times, while still being useful. A difficult balancing act.
But you couldn’t just leave your friends hanging.
When you saw Meg’s aura flare out in distress as she was lowered onto the hook, you began making your way over, quick and quiet and praying to every god you knew that he would be long gone by the time you got there.
And, lucky you, there was no sight of him. So you crept towards the hook, privately taking solace that at least you weren’t alone in the goof factor; Meg was all dressed up like Wendy - the fast-food icon. The Entity really outdid herself, the braids were right on the nose, and you were almost loosey-goosey enough to make some stupid quip. Almost. Maybe when she wasn’t dangling from a meat hook.
You pulled her off the hook with care, but just as her feet touched the ground, another gunshot rang out, this time much louder. A spear whizzed by so close that you could hear it shear through the air just before it embedded itself in the post, inches away from you both. No sooner had you whipped your head around to find the source than the sound of shoes pounding against the ground filled your ringing ears.
You looked back and Meg was gone. Peeled off like a bandaid.
You decided you better get the hell out of Dodge too.
First things first, you needed to get out of the open; that was just asking to get shot. So you made a mad dash for the saloon. You figured you had a good head start since it should have taken him a hot minute to retrieve the harpoon, dislodge it from the hook, shove it back in the gun… Sounded like a whole ass process.
Except, when you looked back behind you he was hot on your tail. Trail. Hot on your trail.
You made a snap judgment, deciding you’d try and lose him by running up to the second story. Was it cheap? Absolutely. He obviously had some kind of bum leg, unless that brace was some kind of bold fashion statement. Not that it had ever slowed him down, any. But you were desperate. And all’s fair in love and war, right?
Swiftly turning the corner, you galloped up the stairs and dove into the first room you saw, hopping through the window.
By the time your eyes adjusted to the indoors and you realized it was a dead-end, it was too late. The only other exit was boarded up, and you could hear his boots unhurriedly thumping up the creaky steps like he was in no rush at all. Step. Step. You rushed to the boarded-up door and gave it a good open-palmed slam to test its strength - you’d seen killers smash through these like they were cardboard, but it just wouldn’t budge. Shit.
He was getting closer. You could hear his spurs. Hissing, you banged your fist against the boards in frustration. What, impending injury wasn’t bad enough? She had to add insult, too?
The footsteps stopped, and so did everything else, it felt like. Holding your breath, you slowly began to turn around. There he was in the window, backlit and silhouette, dusty sunlight filtering through his ghostly white hair. You had to admit, he cut a striking figure, something cinematic. There was just the trouble of the gun. Aimed right at you.
Didn’t have to climb over the window if he just reeled you to him. Smart man.
Before you could think to dive for cover or something smart like that, he began lowering the gun. It was hard to tell what expression he was wearing, backlit as he was, but you could feel those spectral eyes looking you up and down. From your cheap western style boot covers, all the way up your legs to your fluffy petticoat and layered skirts, the ill-fitted booze bandolier slung around your shoulder… and finally, the gold, plastic 5 point sheriff star nestled between your tits.
Oh God. Here it comes…
He didn’t even have to say a word, hot embarrassment already surging to the surface before he even opened his mouth.
“Well. Pardon me.” You could make out the glint of dirty teeth in the dark as his grin spread. “Didn’t know you were an elected official.”
Why the hell was he exempt from this bullshit, anyway? You’d seen Ghostface in a devil costume, and Myers in a cat ear headband, so you knew they weren’t immune. Maybe the Entity thought he looked stupid and campy enough as is. But… she couldn’t have dressed him up as Woody from Toy Story or something? He probably wouldn’t have gotten it, but you would have found it funny. Maybe then you wouldn’t have felt so small and humiliated.
You hated this. You didn’t even know what to say until he started climbing over the window. Then you had a pretty clear idea.
“Don’t come any closer,” you warned shakily, backing up against the boarded-up door as he stalked forward, every step radiating confidence.
“To see you try.”
And on that note, he finally tipped it back - you watched his adam’s apple bob as he swallowed it down. Shaking the empty bottle at you, he slipped it back into its holster on your belt. “Bit frivolous, you know.” He commented, curling his finger in and snapping it back. “A flask does just fine. No need to reinvent the wheel.”
“Right, well,” you huffed, and moved to squeeze past him - he was clearly in good humor, at least, so maybe he’d let you off easy. Wasn’t a little whiskey and a laugh good enough?
Apparently not.
You were immediately met with an arm shooting out, hand landing right beside your head, caging you in.
“Woah there, where d’ya think you’re going, sweetheart?” He smirked down at you, a crooked thing that flashed his teeth, scarred lip snagged over a canine. You’d never noticed before, but one of his incisors had a gold crown. Now that you’d noticed, you couldn’t stop looking at it, the alcohol still floating around in your bloodstream turning you into some sort of easily distracted magpie. He was missing one of his bottom teeth, too. It was… kind of a mess in there, huh? Smelled like whiskey and tobacco.
“You got me all the way up here, I’m not too keen on leaving already.” Sliding his hand from the door, he guided you away by the small of your waist, and you… you just kind of let him, stiltedly trying to follow his direction.
“So how about you…” You reached the bed and he grabbed you by your shoulders, turning you round to face him. “Just sit your pretty ass down.” Just a slight push and you were bouncing on the bedsprings, palms catching your fall.
In the back of your mind you were already fearing the worst, but much to your surprise he just sat down next to you on the edge of the mattress, looking almost comically large and out of place on the twin-size bed. All you could do was blink at him dumbly, unsure what was happening.
He took a long breath through his nose. It felt like forever before he finally released it and said, “Have a drink with me.”
“I…” You drew out the word dubiously, clearly meaning to decline. You were already too tipsy for comfort considering present company was a killer.
“Didn’t ask,” He said gruffly, pulling two bottles from your bandolier and offering you one. “Indulge an old man. Or we’ll do it the hard way.”
Hard to argue with that! You didn’t know what the hard way was, but you didn’t want to find out. So you took the bottle, lips pulling together in a tight, awkward half-smile when he clinked his against yours.
This was weird. Awkward, and in a whole different way than you’d been preparing yourself for.
You actually found yourself glad for the burn that flooded your body as you downed the shot, heat loosening your tense limbs and taking the edge off this… incredibly odd situation, if only slightly.
Besides the obvious threat, it felt like maybe, despite everything… he was really just a lonely old man. In want of someone to drink with. A slice of normality. Isn’t that what you all wanted? You guessed it couldn’t hurt. It was keeping him away from the generators, anyway. Buying you all some extra time.
And… maybe this was what the Entity wanted. The reason she brought you here like this.
“Now, miss,” He spoke, and you turned your gaze up to him, blinking owlishly, your head swimming. There was a lot to take in at this distance. All these different textures. Scars and stubble and pockmarks. You found it all fascinating. “I’ve got to be frank with you.”
You know, you hadn’t really heard him speak at length before, but you were starting to realize that his whole aesthetic, he didn’t really sound straight out of a spaghetti western like you might expect. There was a trace of that, especially in his vocabulary, but his accent was much more reminiscent of… Canada, somehow. With a slightly Irish lilt.
It was ludicrously unexpected, and something about it just made a dopey smile float onto your face. You didn’t even realize you were doing it, until his eyes drifted down, and he huffed with almost fond incredulity.
“Think that’s funny, huh?”
You’re almost positive you missed something he said. You heard it, you just didn’t… process it right. This time when he spoke, you tried to pay attention.
“I don’t usually go taking what ain’t mine, but damn if you don’t look like a present addressed just to me.”
It was your turn to huff, bobbing with amusement. “Okay, cowboy, I know what it looks like, but…” It wasn’t like you chose this outfit.
“Honey,” he interrupted, “I think you’ve mistaken me for the wrong kinda wrangler. It’s not cows I’m after.” He paused, tipping his head as if reconsidering, smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. “But if a heifer’s in need of a good driving…”
It took you a solid minute for your brain to catch up. He was content to watch the cogs turn until it did.
He just called you a cow!
A cow in need of a good dicking!
Your mouth hung open in shock and he - he just laughed.
“Little slow on the uptake, aren’t cha? Had a few already? How bout one more?” His hand began trailing up your leg, dirty fingers slowly dipping beneath your pure white petticoat.
Suddenly, one thing was very clear.
You had to get out of here.
Shaking your head, you tried to stand, but you were swiftly reeled back as soon as your feet hit the ground, pulled into a hard lap, all bones and brace and knobby knees and God knows what else.
“We’re gonna have one more,” his voice materialized right beside your ear, tone final as he pulled another mini from your belt. You shook your head, whimpering some protest between tightly closed lips as he pressed the bottle to your mouth. Behind you, you heard him sigh through his nose like a beleaguered bull. Then his other hand came round your face, pinching your nose shut.
You didn’t wait around for your lungs to give out. There wasn’t any point in that. You knew he wasn’t going to give in. But you did. Almost immediately. Your lips parted for air and got tequila instead, swallowing sloppily as you tried not to choke, rivulets of amber dripping down your chin while he murmured, “There you go… Nice and easy…”
His hand lowered to your throat to tip your head back, your world spinning as a wet sensation dragged across your chin, the man licking up the tequila in one broad and obscene lick. That rotten chuckle inundated your senses. “Awful cute when ya can’t even keep your eyes straight.” He tapped his fingers along the column of your throat, adding in afterthought. “Awful cute anyway, but I’m not really in the mood to fight just for a little company tonight. You gonna be good for me now, darling?”
“…Uh-huh.” You nearly sobbed out the sound, voice meek and pathetic. But you’d be lying if you weren’t starting to feel… sweaty under your skirts, inner thighs getting embarrassingly slick. That always happened when you were drunk, but never this bad.
And despite all the awfulness churning in your stomach, you still felt heat pool in your gut as he cooed, “Good girl. Not at dumb as you look, are you?”
You didn’t even realize he was actually expecting an answer until he probed again, “Are you?”
You quickly shook your head.
Humming, he seemed to accept that, because he was soon re-adjusting you on his lap and catching your lips with his in a messy kiss. He tasted strong and dry, your tongue prickling like your taste buds were trying to retract at the mere slide of his against yours; like salt on a slug. When his hand crept up your skirt this time, you didn’t try to stop him, even as his middle finger began tracing your sopping panties, dipping into the wet seam. You could scarcely think, devolved into a gooey pile of nerves and feelings that he was amusedly plucking at.
Peeling your panties aside, his fingers parted your folds, a pleased rumble emanating in his throat and vibrating in your mouth when his thumb brushed against your clit and your hips twitched in response.
You were gasping for breath by the time he finally pulled his mouth away, but he gave you no time to recover, already pressing two fingers past your resistance. In some attempt to ground yourself, you grasped at his arm as they began curling and pumping inside you, but your weak, drunk grip made it about as easy as catching clouds.
At some point, your barely-there vision drifted towards the window and you dimly realized you were facing it, completely exposed. That if anyone came up the stairs, they’d be able to see everything.
You’d just have to hope his heartbeat would be enough to keep them far away from the saloon. Eyes fluttering to the ceiling, you pushed the thought from your mind. It wasn’t hard. Not when the feeling in your stomach was reaching a fever pitch, nearing the point of no return.
In some ways, he was a lot gentler than you were expecting. Which was good, because you felt hopelessly vulnerable right now, helpless and disorientated in his lap, his looming over you making your mixed up brain feel protected even though some part of you knew that wasn’t right.
Everything felt numb except where he touched you; the heat of his breath on your neck, the kisses he pressed to your skin, the scrape of his beard, the brush of his long hair against your shoulder. All your wires were crossed, every little sensation going straight to your core.
Gasping out as your climax crashed over you, your hips lurched, thighs trying to snap closed around his hand. Unbothered, he just kept stroking you through it until your hips finally began to sink back down and your cunt stopped desperately trying to milk his fingers. Withdrawing slowly, he pressed them into your open mouth, the tang of your own juices spreading across your tongue. You didn’t know what it said about you that your blind instinct was to obediently suck, but that’s what you did, and he breathed out in a low, steady hiss.
“Careful, now. Fool me too good and I might have to keep you.”
Pulling away, he encouraged you to lay on the bed, settling between your legs. You watched the ceiling drift then snap back to place every time you blinked while he fiddled with something - you weren’t sure what until he was fixing your arms above your head and the apparently not-so-novelty handcuffs from your costume were being snapped around your wrists.
Then his hands were skating over you appreciatively, over your ribcage, the curvature of your waist almost reverently. “Guess the good Lord finally answered my prayers.” He murmured, flicking the plastic sheriff star between your bosom. “Not really how I woulda done it, but beggars can’t be choosers, eh? After all…” The man sighed, fingers curling into the top of your blouse and slowly dragging the gingham fabric down over your breasts until they were revealed to his eerie, quietly covetous eyes. “We don’t exactly have all the time in the world, do we?”
What was that even supposed to mean? It seemed to you as if you had nothing but time. Maybe not in this particular trial - and as if to punctuate that thought, you felt a generator kick to life, the familiar thrum of hope in your bones.
Did he know something you didn’t? Or were you just too foxed to follow?
Exhaling, he rolled his hands over your breasts, admiring the feel of them for just a moment. It seemed like he wanted to take his time with you, but the reminder that you were on a timer was the spur in his side that eventually pushed him to move on.
You heard him audibly fiddling with his belts and wondered if you were getting out of this alive. It was cold comfort, but at least you’d probably managed to save everyone else. Not very heroic when it wasn’t even really your decision. But it was something. Maybe. Something to cling to as you felt the heat of him slide across the mess he’d made of you.
Whimpering, you curled inwards from your core as he entered you, bound hands lifting up and both grasping at his chest at the feeling of being run through. By no means was it violent. It didn’t hurt, exactly. But it had been a long time, and he was unforgivingly long and solid and foreign. An intrusion on your body.
“That’s it. There you go, gorgeous. Hang onto me.”
You did, your hands abandoning his chest to loop over his neck, accidentally knocking the hat off his head in your bound fumbling. He didn’t seem to care, swooping down to take your lips again while you struggled to get used to the feeling of him moving inside you.
With how wet you already were, it didn’t take all that long before pleasure started to win out, every little bump and grind against your sweet spot pulling you closer to the edge again, his mouth muffling the pathetic stream of sounds trying to escape yours.
This time, the fall from the top was a slow one, liquid heat spilling out across your core - though you weren’t quite aware how literally until you felt it physically starting to pool beneath you, a wave of embarrassment flaring when you’d realized what just happened. Okay - you didn’t - that had never happened before, drunk or not.
Your hopes that he didn’t notice were dashed as he pulled away to chuckle heatedly in your ear. He wasn’t far behind though, laughter broken by a groan as his hips snapped against yours, burying himself deep as he could go. You felt the alien jerk of his cock inside you, radiating warmth.
Panting, he nuzzled at your neck as he came down, whiskers scratching at your skin. You felt… suspended in place, not sure what came next. But you guessed it wasn’t up to you. Hesitantly, you let your fingers slip into his sweaty white tresses, the texture thick and rough like the mane of a horse, dusty and… probably unwashed for God knows how long.
There was that awkward feeling again. Like you were two pieces of a puzzle that didn’t fit no matter how you turned them, but you weren’t allowed to leave.
Eventually, he took a deep, centering breath and withdrew from you, guiding your hands back to the bed and clicking open the safety release of the handcuffs, setting you free and letting them fall wherever on the floor.
Rubbing your wrists, you groaned in discomfort as he dragged his fingers through the mess, pushing his cum back inside you. No. You just wanted to be done.
But then he pulled your panties back into place. Pulled your shirt back up. Smoothed your skirts down.
His gaze lingered on you for a long moment before he heaved a big sigh and finally dismounted.
Pulling you up by your arm so that you were sitting up, he grabbed his hat from the bed, and you felt him plop it onto your head and adjust it.
“Suits ya.” He said softly, and it was the first thing he’d said in a while. Part of you was waiting for the other shoe to drop, not sure if he wanted a thank you, or…
He eyed you for another long moment, like there was something more he wanted to say, but… Instead, his gaze flicked down to the bandolier round your chest.
You swallowed hard as he plucked the last two bottles from your belt, the thought of taking another shot making your stomach churn and your gag reflex curl.
Patting your thigh, he bonelessly plopped himself in the nearby chair, rolling his eyes as you just stared at him. “Go on, get.” He snorted, uncapping one of the little bottles. “Don’t fall down the stairs on your way out.”
He was letting you go? Just like that?
You hesitated, something about this seemed… unfinished. You weren’t sure if you wanted to go.
But you didn’t want to wait around until he changed his mind, either.
So you uncertainly began heading towards the window, pausing when you remembered - “Your hat…” You reached for it, intending to give it back, but…
“Keep it, I don’t care.” That sounded unexpectedly crabby, and when you looked back, he wasn’t looking at you. He was staring at the wall, avoiding your gaze as he tipped back a shot. “Wear it if you want to see me again. Don’t if ya don’t. I can take a hint.”
You blinked, unable to believe he was sulking. Now. After everything.
Your fingers hovered over the brim of the hat. You needed to quash this now, while you still had the chance. Your conscience was screaming at you, leave it, don’t encourage him, don’t even give him hope.
Don’t bring it to the campfire. Don’t anything. Just… leave it on the windowsill, you told yourself. It shouldn’t have even required thought. Nothing about this was okay.
You didn’t even know his goddamn name.
And yet… You found your hand slowly lowering, falling back down to your side. You gave him one last, long look before grabbing the windowsill.
You could always decide later.

Notes:
Thank you Pugge for beta'ing most of this!
I do not know WHY this took me so long to write but I’m fairly happy with it. Sorta wasn’t the direction I originally had planned for this, but what can I say, I’m cursed. I got the Midas touch, except instead of gold, everything I touch turns to non-con.

Marigolds
Summary:
Marigolds-the flower of the dead. They are used to guide spirits visiting the land of the living.
Marinette is used to weird, she's no stranger to spirits. Even so, she never imagined she would meet her soulmate like this
Chapter 1
“Wow, didn’t think magic girls were actually a thing. Good to know.” Is the first thing Marinette hears after she drops her transformation.
Which makes no sense because Marinette is completely, one hundred and ten percent sure that Tikki was the only living thing in this room with her. She’s careful to check than double-check. The tape she had left along the window had still been intact when she entered it. The powder she dusted her hatch with hadn’t been disturbed.
The only thing out of place is the chill in the air, it’s bone-deep like something leaching the life out of the room. A cold current that makes something in Marinette’s brain tingle. Chat would call it fur rubbed wrong, it’s the closest Marinette can come to describing the sensation.
No one should be in the room with her.
Her identity must be maintained at all costs, she takes precautions to ensure it. None of them have been bypassed.
“Got to say I dig the suit,” the voice says completely indifferent to how she’s tensed. Marinette can’t place it. “It’s a little gaudy sure, but hey we can’t all be the Dark Knight. I get the appeal even, flashy, attention-grabbing, it’s a nice stick.”
Marinette can’t breathe, she’s not sure what exactly to do. The voice is coming from behind her. It was relaxed, casual if a bit hollow, like this was the sort of thing that happened every day.
“Maybe not the safest option. You're like a freaking stop sign. How does that work, like sure the Robin costume is a bold as hell traffic light but that’s the point, you know? Draw away the gunfire so the big bad Bat can swoop in a knock them all on their asses.”
Marinette narrows her eyes. Because while knowledge of the Justice League is expected to some extent. Their world-renowned, it would be hard not to have heard of them with all the earth ending disasters they’ve put a stop to, the lack of knowledge is surprising. Everyone in Paris knows who Ladybug is.
The fact that he doesn’t seem to, it sets off a red flag in Marinette’s mind. One that makes her fingers twitch with nervous energy even though her muscles are locked in place. Frozen over by manic fear.
“It’s funny, you’re acting almost as if you can hear me. I’m not complaining, talking to myself gets boring fast, trust me on that one. Bats isn’t anywhere close to great company.”
Marinette turns. Reclined back on her chaise is a boy. He’s tall, taller than Adrien, probably taller than Luka even, with windswept black hair that falls into his eyes. Eyes that are so blue they’re the first thing she really notices about him. They glow iridescent, demanding attention and focus and….
The next thing she notices just as he opens his mouth again is the blood.
“Wait,” He says slowly, his words tentative. “You can see me, it’s not just the isolation talking here. You can see me.”
The blood dripping down from his matted hair onto the bruises that line his cheeks.
“Am I not supposed to?” Marinette asks, her voice shaky.
The blood bubbling out from fresh burns.
“No,” his voice is just as uncertain. “You really shouldn’t.”
She thinks her reaction is more than justified. Even if her screaming makes the boy pop out of existence and sends her parents racing up the stairs.
.
Her parents leave her after a few minutes. Buying her excuses of spider, spider I saw the biggest spider under my desk. It had so many legs! without much fuss.
Tikki comes out of her hiding place shortly after they disappear down the stairs. There’s a look in her eyes, one that Marinette’s seen maybe a handful of times in the two years she’s held her Miraculous.
It’s a look that comes with answers. Answers that scare Marinette far more than the questions ever did. The first time Tikki’s eyes glinted like this Marinette transformed for the first time. The last time, Marinette met the guardian and begun training to take his place.
This is the look Tikki gives her when she’s about to be trusted with a secret that changes everything.
She hates this look.
Marinette's still standing in the middle of her room staring vacantly at her chaise. “Tikki who was that.”
“That’s not what you should be asking Marinette,” Tikki says looking at Marinette with a keen eye.
Often enough Tikki will watch Marinette like she’s waiting for something. What that something is, Marinette doubts she truly will ever know, that she’ll even want to know. Maybe it’s due to the magic that binds Tikki to the role of guide, which forces her to needle Marinette into asking the right questions in order to get her half-answers.
Tikki is a god. No matter how kind she is, no matter how much she cares for Marinette, her games are not optional.
Marinette will never be able to refuse Tikki, not after having spent years as her patron.
“I saw him,” Marinette chokes out, “I saw him Tikki.”
“That’s good Marinette, I saw him too.”
“Have you seen him before?”
“No.” Tikki pauses, brushing the hair out of Marinette’s face. “I’ve seen others, yes. But not him.”
“Others, who else-”
Tikki cuts her off with a little tut. “Marinette, you’re still focusing on the wrong question.”
Genies were most likely based on the Kwami. They’re all a fickle bunch, hiding behind double meanings and exact wording. It’s hard to figure out just what question Tikki wants her to ask the right question, the exact right question. She can’t tell her the who the why would be pointless to ask about. Marinette knows Tikki will only answer with something having to do with fate. So what's left is…
She breaks her staring contest with the chaise, turning to meet Tikki’s eyes. “What was he.”
“You’re still not quite there. You, humans, are always a lot of whats depending on the when. I could say child or man or soulmate or-”
This time Marinette is the one to cut Tikki off. “He can’t be my soulmate. You said Ladybugs and Black Cats are always connected.”
“And you are. A lot of Ladybugs find their soulmates outside of their Black Cats. There’s a lot of different ways to be connected Marinette, most people have more than one thread attached to their soul, my bugs especially so. Not all threads are soulmates.”
“What does that make Chat Noir than?” Marinette asks.
“Nothing besides what he is now, soulmates aren’t the end all be all, you know. They’re not the soul the completes you, they’re just the soul that fits best around you. They’re a possibility, your hearts still your own.”
“So even though he’s my soulmate…” Marinette trails off.
“Not is, was,” Tikki says, her voice sad. “That’s the when.”
“Was.” She can feel her throat closing up around her words. “What is he now.”
Even as she asks it, Marinette knows the answer. It’s in the corner of her mind, right along the edge snuggled tightly against secrets like Chat Noir’s identity and the real reason Master Fu has lived nearly two hundred years.
She doesn’t want to put a name to the feeling the boy had stirred in her. She doesn’t want to put a name to what the boy is. She doesn’t want to acknowledge the end of a possibility that never truly started to begin with.
Names have power, it’s why their titles are so important. Once she says it. Once the word claws past the dark barbed parts of her mind and out her mouth there will be no going back.
Tikki has never been afraid to do what Marinette can’t, she’s a spirit after all. Humanity is something she observes and doesn’t understand.
“He is a ghost silly,” Tikki says.
It’s an end, one marked before anything had ever had the chance to begin. It shouldn’t hurt but all the same, Marinette feels a part of her heartache. The part of her that's still so heartbreakingly young wants to cry over how unfair this all this.
The part of her that’s grown up much to fast, faster than anyone should have to, stops her from mourning. Life is not fair, the Kwami have no interest in silly things like that. Fair is a concept that Tikki won’t get.
Fair is something that no one gets.
Marinette doesn’t get any sleep that night either.
Notes:
I really wanted to play with the prompt "when they die your soulmate comes to haunt you" . It had so much potential so while my insides said 15k one-shot my heart said nope we're gonna milk it. I needed to get some multi-chapter practice in any way.
Also because Jason is currently 21 in the canon universe I will say this takes place when he dies, which is 15 according to his death certificate. Marinette is also 15, she's had her Miraculous for 2 years now after receiving it at 13. I feel no guilt in destroying the show's timeline to suit my needs, not when the episodes don't care about continuity.

Okay? Janis: Alright Janis: What do you wanna say? Anything? Should I go? Jimmy: Don't Jimmy: It's not your fault like, being too good for me and that Janis: Are you mental? What are you even chatting Janis: Fuck leagues, not even playing the same sport, and I ain't bragging Janis: For once Jimmy: Bollocks Jimmy: You're fucking stunning like, and that's just looks Janis: 🙄 Janis: Please Janis: that's the start and end of my qualities Janis: don't even make the most of that, like Jimmy: Shut up Jimmy: It isn't Jimmy: And you don't need to, that makes it worse, or better depending on the lens you're viewing through Janis: I've told you, I know what I am Janis: Ain't under any illusion I'm a catch Janis: Not fishing for sympathy like Jimmy: I'm not throwing any sympathy out Jimmy: Or compliments, just facts Jimmy: You are a catch, mate Janis: Blatantly not 'cos no one else thinks or has thought so Janis: what I'm saying, there's nothing to BE jealous about Janis: no one gunning for you 'cos I'm off the market, is there Jimmy: Only cause they can't compete with how #goals we are Janis: Yeah, that's the joke Jimmy: It doesn't have to be Jimmy: I'm not laughing Janis: No? That might've been your reality but it certainly hasn't been mine Janis: There's a reason I was a 'dyke' with no friends, and those reasons haven't disappeared Janis: You would laugh, you do Jimmy: No Janis: Forget it Janis: I'm using mine now too Jimmy: Don't Jimmy: I don't want you to forget what I'm trying to say Jimmy: Even if I am messing it up Janis: you don't have to Janis: say anything Janis: just 'cos I'm being a fucking sad case Jimmy: I want to Jimmy: There's so much shit I wanna say to you, alright? Janis: But you don't know how? Janis: Alright, Liam, fucking hell Jimmy: He was on to something Janis: Maybe Janis: 😏 Janis: You don't need this though, my shit ontop of yours, forreal, so you can forget about it, alright? Jimmy: I'm not that much of dickhead Janis: Ugh, can't you try? Janis: Always claiming the title and now where is it when we need it, eh Jimmy: Sorry Jimmy: Got no control over it like that Jimmy: Basically none around you, like Janis: You mean that? Janis: No bullshit, no bants? Jimmy: You know I do Janis: Good Janis: 'cos me either Janis: and I am jealous, really jealous Janis: and you know that too, I know Jimmy: That's why you have to hear me out Jimmy: There's no reason to be Jimmy: I swear Janis: Alright Janis: I'll try Janis: Its not personal, but I know its shitty to be on the other end of it regardless Jimmy: Good Jimmy: I can't lie now, I quite like it Jimmy: Nobody's ever been that bothered about me before Janis: Well they're thick then Janis: I Janis: I dunno Janis: Not had anyone to myself before Janis: that I wanted to keep Janis: not letting go easy, like Jimmy: Don't Jimmy: Me and you.
