miscellaneous things i appreciate about wendell & wild:

-the nuance built into kat’s punkness. yes, she absolutely is a contrarian rebellious teenager, but it’s also genuinely how she’s always been. it’s not portrayed as rebellion for rebellion’s sake, it’s kat’s way of reasserting her identity and her connection to her parents when she’s spent years having her choices stripped from her.

-how many of the characters like kat. raúl sees a kindred spirit. siobhan wants to be her friend and is being kind in the way she knows how. sister helley reaches out to her even before she becomes a hell maiden. wendell & wild are in awe of her. ms. hunter doesn’t let her position prevent her from treating kat like an individual with agency and importance. it’s heartening that kat, a character defined by guilt both personal and state-issued, is coming into a setting where people genuinely want to see her thrive.

-the future sequence where it’s revealed she stays in rust bank and helps restore it to its former glory made me cry. it’s what they all deserve.

-no one has any “it’s my style” excuses for whitewashing when w&w gave us a litany of black characters with individually distinct features.

-even the demons have more emotional intelligence than your average corporate CEO.

-“you don’t get to smack me”

-when all that’s left of the memory monster is the memory of losing her parents, kat hugs it, letting it dissolve into her. she’s acknowledging that the choices she’s made and the things that’ve happened to her have gotten her to this point, but she’s absolving herself of the guilt — embracing her past instead of hating herself for it.

-raúl’s struggles as a trans boy aren’t framed as oppression porn. siobhan’s accidental deadnaming is just that — an accident— and undoubtedly one she’ll learn from in the future. his mother supports him without reservation. kat doesn’t even make note of it. they could’ve easily added catty smiles, tired sighs and “wait, you’re trans?” moments, but they didn’t. raúl is a human being whose transness informs his life without being crushed by it.

-siobhan’s arc is wonderful. she doesn’t become kat and raúl’s personal savior, she doesn’t angst over what she has to do, the story never becomes about her — but she uses her position (read: her class privilege) to do what she can. she becomes part of the solution.

-i know the last two points read like “duh, everyone should be doing that” but it’s such a relief to have a film get these things right, unapologetically so and without a core of virtue signaling. it’s nice to not have the stories we want told held for ransom, then declawed by producers because pissing off uninspired rich people would be bad for business.

Most to least likely to want children?

Hey, still alive. Sorry it took so long! More incoming!

Most to least likely to want kids:

1. Sam - He hangs out and plays with Vincent so often that it's something he's comfortable with and I can't imagine him not being excited to have some of his own.

2. Alex - He feels like a nuclear family kind of dude. He gives the excited-but-a-little-sad-it's-not-a-boy dad vibes. He'll want to play catch and such. But I also see him having a tea party with his little girl who he is way too protective of. Girls name would be his mom's.

3. Shane - Never thought he wanted kids, but he started pulling himself together and worked on his relationship with Jas. Maybe, just maybe, he can see himself on the farm with his s/o watching their little monsters run around or try to help our dear farmer.

4. Sebastian - Almost like Shane in the sense he didn't think he wanted kids considering his only exposure to younglings was Vincent. But suddenly his life plans have changed anyway - he's staying in the Valley with his farmer and is able to take more time off work. Idk, I can see him start thinking about it and/or not hating it when the farmer brings it up.

5. Elliott - He is a focused man who puts writing first. I can see him wanting kids, but I can't see him giving up writing or doing so less. A child takes so much time and is a more-than-full-time job that wouldn't be fair to dump on the farmer. He'll write about kids though.

6. Harvey - Kids are germ-infested little hosts who will get sick and bring any possible illness home. Also, what if they get sick or injured and he can't help them? What if they die and it's because he couldn't save them? No thank you.

I'd say 5 and 6 are interchangeable and tbh the whole list could be different in my brain tomorrow when I think of a different fact or idea.

I appreciate your patience in all of this.

Sunshine back in their windowless room in the bowels of CloseKnit. Exhausted after their close encounter with the shade and terrified of the repercussions of Blake’s ‘deal’ with Brachium weakly singing “Sweet dreams that leave all worries behind you… But in your dreams, whatever they be… dream a little dream of me…” to themself. Desperately trying not to fall asleep because without Elliott… without Brachium, utterly alone… who knows what nightmares they might live. And their waking one is bad enough.

Ppl get so pissed that botw and totk's music isn't "iconic" enough like the older games, but like

Look me dead in the eye and tell me you want to hear the exact same 1 to 3 minute loop of notes over and over and over for several hours while you're trying to do literally anything at all.

Like- completionists, you're going to all the shrines [120 in botw, 152 in totk], collecting all the korok seeds [900 in botw, 1000 in totk], doing side quests, finishing your hyrule compendium and so on. That takes a long ass time, do you really want to hear a song you might not even like for a minimum of 190 hours?

Botw and Totk are very audio focused games in terms of gameplay anyway. The devs put a lot of effort into the sound design of the game. How are you supposed to feel like you're sneaking through a dangerous area when you have a constant tune playing in your ears 24/7.

Besides, with how sparse the main overworld music is, it makes the parts of the game that have actual songs in it count so much more. Instead of having constant noise and 1 or 2 songs that stand out, now you have more impact because the music kicks in when its important for it to be there.

Ik people were probably gonna hate the botw/totk ost if it was like the older games anyway because of those points. So it's a double-edged sword, but the way the ost is now? It's supposed to be like that. It fits the format, the sound design, and the length of the game. Which was the point.
