most of us have heard of the red car game. you’re on a road trip, you’re bored, you start looking for red cars to do something.
and then they’re everywhere. you notice them nearly every few minutes.
there aren’t suddenly more red cars now, of course. you were seeing them already, but you weren’t noticing. you weren’t looking.
I am noticing things.
there is a plant I notice everywhere now, a small bushy plant in suburbs, along streets, by shops on the highways. dwarf umbrella bush is what the internet tells me when I look for it’s name. I did this because I wanted to know why,
every time I ever saw it, every place,
it was always dying. always the leaves turning yellow, the branches small and scraggly. inside out - nitrogen deficiency. their soil drained.
I am noticing how many of these landscaping plants are yellowing, how small and sickly they look in just a few years. I am noticing how often the grass outside the house is replaced when it once again turns brown and dry, how the type never changes and the cycle starts again. I am noticing how the unmowed, unkempt spaces on lakesides and roadsides look more alive than this. how the preserve I grew up next to was miles of “messy” unmanicured nature and the ground was covered in leaves instead of grass and there was life.
I am noticing the birds that come by the lake. there was a flash of blue wings and red chest - eastern bluebird, male, relatively common. I had never seen one before. there is a family of ducks that appear every spring; i cannot say if it’s successive generations or different ducks, but I can always look forward to ducklings. there are little brown birds with white heads whose names I do not know - are they some kind of piper? why don’t I already know?
why is it so hard to learn about my native plants (accurately, that is)? why are so many gardening sites littered with people who think a plants value is based on how pretty or useful it is to them, who think a tree shedding leaves is “messy”?
why is knowing about the world we live in so… odd? why is it a hobby and not vital knowledge? I learned about polar equations. I taught myself about mycorrhizal networks and species of insects.
(did you know there are shiny green bees? a special species of wasp pollinating figs? that white flowers bloom at night for moths? do you know? have you looked?)
I cannot look at a lawn and see life anymore. it is a wasteland, devoid of life, dying slowly itself. everywhere is grass, grass, doused in water that runs over into storm drains, soaked in fertilizer and pesticides and a hundred other poisons and sending one clear message:
this is a place of death. life is not welcome here.
I do not think I could live in a city. too loud, yes, too busy, yes, too many people, yes, but the plants would bother me. a tree allotted only a convenient square, surrounded by dead stone and metal.
a forest cleared for this, for burning asphalt streets and racing cars and shops whose bathrooms are “for paying customers only”.
this is a place of death. life is not welcome here.
and now I am noticing.

I don't think the level of hate towards Daniel would reach the level of calling him Nepo baby. Just because a Christian likes him, f1tiktok is really pathetic.
The Daniel who had to wait tables at 17 to raise money for him to go to Europe? The Daniel whose parents managed to raise just enough funds to send him to Europe for a year and he knew he had to do everything to get spotted by Red Bull if he ever wanted to continue racing? The Daniel who didn’t get paid in his first year racing in F1 because Red Bull somehow had to get back their investment? The Daniel who got braces only after he got his first pay check in F1? That Daniel they’re calling a nepo baby??
They also forget even Christian who apparently likes Daniel so much, was unwilling to pay Daniel the same amount of money as a much younger less experienced Verstappen in 2018 until Dietrich Mateschitz put that offer on the table …

I spent all of Draft One completely ignoring the uncomfortable situation I had going with 's vs s' when it comes to singular and plural nouns and my sudden inability to comprehend how they function. I kept going "No, don't get hung up on the issues, that's what editting is for, just get through the draft and leave the treasure hunting for later".
Guys. I'm having a fucking meltdown. There is no standard. There is no standard?! You're telling me I could say Ceres's or Ceres' and both are right? You're telling me it's supposed to be boss' but we all hate that so it's boss's? You're telling me that punctuation is actually just vibes and you can actually legally make it up as you go because it's all hocus pocus and nobody knows what they're talking about?
This is liberating, actually. I will be abusing this information.
Any other fun tidbits of English that we know about that seem made up? I'd like to know just how much I'm allowed too break this bastard language before it's actually a crime.

Teaching in Gotham is hard
Teacher: Ok everyone, what do we wear in the summer?
Kindergartener: *raising hand enthusiastically* Snow pants!
Teacher: no dear. It doesn’t snow in the summer, it’s too hot!
Kid: but..It was snowing this summer for like 4 days!
Teacher: *thinking back how Me.Freeze tried to make an everlasting Winter in Gotham last Summer* well.. that was a special situation.
Another kid: *raising their hand* Gas masks!
Teacher: *Joker Gas and Fear Toxin always a threat and keeps a gas mask in her bag* umm that’s not mainly for summer though. You can have gas masks all year round.
Kid 3: oh! My mommy and daddy have gardening gloves and belts with weed killer stuff on it!
Teacher: Good! Lots of people do gardening in the summer! What do your parents grow?
Kid 3: oh they don’t grow anything. It’s for when those plants come alive and take over the city. There are vines and cool flowers all over the house! Mommy doesn’t like them though. So they need to get their tools to get rid of them
Teacher: *under her breath* god damnit Gotham.

in united states public school we learn about the american revolution and the first three presidents (minus the fact that they had slaves and abused their families bc how dare we portray them as anything but heroes on a pedastal) every year from when we're 8 to when we're 14, we have one year for generalized world history and if you're lucky one year to learn about a very white-centric view of pre-1700's north america and prehistory
Doesn't that get a bit boring? Now I'm thinking about it tho I think I'd say 95% of my history classes would have been modern history basically anything from the industrial revolution onwards like the world wars, the Russian revolution followed by the cold war including modules on the Vietnam war and Korean war, and then obviously American civil rights movement, the Irish famine, Irish war of independence, irish civil war and finally a lot about the troubles - in fact I think the only two times I can remember learning about anything older is in primary we learnt about ancient Egypt and in first year of secondary we learnt about the native Americans

it makes me sad how often textile arts are ignored as actual art forms, and are relegated to the disregarded realm of 'old lady hobbies'. there is so much skill involved, such a broad diversity of forms, but so many people straight up do not think of things like crochet or quilting as art.

oh my god ! haha . anyway a bit buzzed perhaps. anyway here's what happened on the date
#at some point i took the earrings off. the metal clanging was screaming their name too loud and it#was 6 knives to the throat and he confirmed it so. here's the kicker. you can be taught a lot and you can have their hands on your thighs#and you can kiss them but even if they pray even if they tell you about the bible looking into you like really they lost what they believed#in a pennsylvania countryside catholic schools with a protestant family since joining the london school of economics#even if they pray for you to stay the whole way even though their hair was softer than hers you think of her and he thinks of someone else#and be tells you none of it will make sense. they smile and they say what a shame you might miss the train but they hold onto you#the entirety of you - like a religion or a polite insistence or something to keep.#you learned they were used to losing everyone they felt bound to love. they said they got really good at letting go. you were told#you think he's being epistemologically#irresponsible and he tells you he carries a massive task. he tells you the responsibility is monumental#and he feels responsible for defining responsibility. he shows you songs and his poetry. my eyes feel on fire.#she doesnt know this. this is marylebone. the next station is edgeware road. everyone here looks happy and high and clear of the doors.#he says tell me when you get to the station and very especially tell me if you don't. the next station is paddington. please mind the gap#between the train and the platform. you say this to him. he says i minds the gap between you and i. i mind it so much that i need you to#come back. he says this because you kissed him briefly but you kissed him well. she says you're a good kisser but he says you have him#stunned. he asks you who decides the truth. he tells you you decide the truth without his mouth. you're fast enough to make it there before#the wheels do. this world is lit by glass and light and people with a pact to fall in love with the abstractions more than each other.#he tells you to be committed to your various intangible loves more than anyone. you both have to be. they love each other anyway.#i was supposed to find a persian poetry book with her on our fourth date except she was hours late. i found it with him. he didnt give up#he should be perfect and i should really like him.

english used to be the normie filter & how you could tell someone was a Trve Internethead but after the DAMNED 2020 quarantine for obvious reasons EveryBody & They Momma is acceptably fluent so now i have to learn swedish or something. -_-
Tumblr media
#already been spending time this past year & a half i only need someone to actually speak it with IRL for maximum efficiency#technically i want to say 2019 people were already turning to english at least in my city. 7 year old me would be so happy but#ARRRRRRGHHHHHHH#YOU ARE POSERS I HAVE NOTHING IN COMMON WITH YOU & I NEVER WILL. has me feeling so ♯DECEIVED#native english speakers will probably never understand this feel#speaking english now is just as cringe as i thought being francophone was a decade ago Yes even as a child i was against normies#i was forcibly taught.by my millennial older brother i had no choice but to abide by that line of thought & so here i am today#well he was right. not anymore he ain't but he used to be#but technically you can say this new wave of self taught anglophones are going against the current & remnants of colonialism so well#it is a good thing objectively i just miss the ease of recognizing Real back in the day TT_TT like you just KNEW they shared your interests#& weirdness they knew your references it said something about what their social status likely was too ETC ETC. But not anymore...#i enjoyed it tho i had a bestfriend whom i mostly spoke english with & we were known for it we were outcasts#i distinctly remember this fag who got so mad at us & harassed us for it during middle school recess. like fluency was a bad thing#we were not even gossiping about him Altho we should have been. & that was the best part is that it was a barrier#so you could talk about anything out loud & nobody would be able to understand you & at the time it was just us & our older siblings#+their friends
