I'm Concerned About Our LGBT Headcanons

If you take issue with this, I offer you some copium🤲

Despite most people in this (and pretty much every) fandom being LGBT to some degree, I've found that most of the widely accepted LGBT headcanons follow the same general pattern that is boringly stereotypical at least- and lowkey harmful at most. Seriously, they are all the same in every fandom, and it doesn't look like they're getting more diverse any time soon. I don't want my favourite fandom to be stuck in this mould, so I thought I'd share a few observations I've made about these stereotypes to see if we can avoid the more concerning ones and branch out a bit.

(Some of the problems listed aren’t really related to the Beyblade fandom, just thought I'd list out all of the issues I've seen for future reference.)

(Also, if you yourself happen to be similar to any of these stereotypes, then that's okay! You are a real person, not a character.)

To start us off, I'll introduce my absolute favourite example of this- the poster child of stereotypical headcanons (hcs), Voltron. You don't have to know anything about Voltron to understand this, just tell me if any of these sound familiar...

The Flirty One is Bi (Lance)

The Nice One is Pan (Hunk)

The Nerd is Ace/Aro (Pidge)

Any Androgynous Character is Nonbinary (Any of the fucking aliens)

Every other man is gay because it isn't as hot and sinful to ship a man with a woman as it is to ship one with another man(🙄) (Shiro and Keith)

And every other woman is a lesbian because there is a significant lack of women in this specific media and we're desperately starved for actual rep (and their relationships with each other are solely based on being the only two women in close proximity to each other) (Allura and Romelle)

Any familiarity there? I'm sure you found some, at least.

Look, if it just so happens that a character fits a certain mould and also feels a certain way to you then that's fine. It's not like we need to be constantly breaking stereotypes all the time. But when that's all the headcanons? All the time with every character? Then it's a problem.

We'll start with the first two- Bi and Pan. I'm not here to get into the whole Bi vs Pan debacle, but there are certainly elements here that fuel that fire. Namely that all the pansexual characters are the sweet and friendly ones while the bisexuals are... slutty? I guess?? Yeah... I can see why most bisexuals take issue with this.

There really isn't anything to determine whether you hc a character as bi or pan, so most people turn to personality. I'm sure you know this by now but in case you don't, THAT IS NOT HOW SEXUALITY WORKS. I am not a lesbian because I'm a stuck-up bitch (another great stereotype), I was just born this way. God put me in the randomiser and dealt me a shit hand, and now I can't talk to women.

ANYWAY… I know people choose the sexualities of characters/who to ship with who based on how they interact with other characters, but again, personality shouldn’t be a factor. For example, Lance from Voltron flirts with every woman he sees, and because people were so desperate to pair him with Keith, they just decided that he actually flirts with everyone, and thus is a bisexual bitch. The reality was actually that he was an insecure straight boy who thought getting bitches would make him cool, and any “flirting” that he did with the male characters was just him being snarky (y’all also need to stop taking being rude as secret attraction. Seriously. I get a little rival x rival is nice, but enemy x enemy is dodgy territory.)

As for Hunk, he’s the gentle giant kind of guy; he tries to be nice and friendly towards everyone he meets. Which of course, to the fandom, meant that he was open to a relationship with everyone. The idea that someone being nice to someone else means that they’re attracted to them is an insane concept that needs to die. Have we not learned this from the infamous Nice Guys?

Bisexual people aren’t inherently flirty just because they have more options open to them, and every friendly ray of sunshine isn’t pansexual. If you must decide which out of these two sexualities to give a character, flip a coin.

The stereotype that I have the biggest gripe with personally is the nerd being ace/aro, which is great because it appears in Every. Fucking. Fandom. Peridot from Steven Universe? Entrapta from She-Ra?? Twilight from My Little Pony??? And of course, Pidge from Voltron!

As funny as it is for everyone to collectively think "Wow, this dork gets no bitches" for every single nerd character, it's also kind of concerning- especially considering that the first two characters I mentioned are supposed to be autistic coded. Idk, it kind of gives "autistic people can't love or have sexual feelings" vibes. Like, people say "asexual people don't focus on sex, they focus on whatever they're biggest interest is!!!" Honey... that is an Autistic Person. "They don't waste time on talking to anyone because they're not attracted to them :D" My Brother in Christ… most of them don’t know How to communicate. And again, why do you think communication instantly means attraction, anyway?

Asexual and aromantic people don't have some common personality trait that makes them ace and aro, because again, personality has no correlation to sexuality. They could be literally anyone. Why don't you make any of the "attractive" characters ace, hm? Why not make the one who's fun, bubbly and friends with everyone aro? Let's expand our horizons a bit. Step away from the autistic dudes. Let us love, for once.

Another small issue I want quickly to point out is only headcanoning the younger characters as asexual. I shouldn’t have to point out why it is an issue, but if you can’t figure it out, ask yourself this: Why are the only asexual characters the ones that you can’t imagine having sex with each other? Sus.

The problem of only the alien/non-human characters being nonbinary isn’t really a Beyblade problem, since the show is severely lacking in aliens. I just wanted to point it out because, you know, nonbinary people are actually human, and only presenting them as otherwise is terribly harmful. There are obvious examples of this, like Double-Trouble from She-Ra and Stevonnie from Steven Universe. Just be wary of show creators that try to show off their inclusiveness by going “You see this literal monster we’re introducing? This amalgamation of two people? They’re an enby!” Like, my dude… just make a human. Any human. And then give ‘em the old “they/them.” It’s not hard.

Now that being said, we do still have a bit of a gender headcanoning problem in this here fandom- and not the neopronouns, 'cause I don't give a shit about those. The problem is when you take every gender nonconforming (gnc) character and make them nonbinary to some degree. There are two obvious problems with this:

Not every nonbinary person presents androgynously. Like my favourite quote from I don't know where says, "Nonbinary people don't owe you androgyny. They do, however, owe you a little dance or jig."

Not every androgynous person is nonbinary. Men and women can also, shockingly, present in ways that aren’t typically masculine or feminine.

What makes this quite a bit concerning to me is that most of the cast of Beyblade is male, so pretty much all of the gnc characters are male. So, when you take every male character that isn't completely masculine and think that they must be nonbinary... do you see the problem here?

Shockingly, men can actually be gnc. Crazy, right? Men can wear makeup, and have long hair, and have any speck of pink on their body and still be just a man. Yeah, it's fine to hc a few of them as nb (you are starved of representation, after all), but all of them? And none of the typically masculine men? Now you're just being unrealistic. Maybe Jack is just some dude who likes makeup. Maybe Tithi is just a five-year-old with pink hair. Maybe quirked-up white boy Chris is an enby. Idk. Going off of “vibes” alone is a bad idea, because we all know vibes is a fancy way of saying how they look in this instance.

This one definitely isn't just a Beyblade problem. In fact, something interesting *cough cough* offensive *cough* that I've noticed is that, in any fandom, it is usually only the canonically male characters that get this treatment. Why? Because when women are androgynous, they're lesbians. They have to be, right? If woman not lesbian then why woman have short hair? She imitate man!

Other than that fun one, though neither Voltron nor Beyblade have many women, there are still quite a few harmful stereotypes for us. Great. Other than the shoving two random girls together for the sake of it that I mentioned above, there is also:

The Soft™ lesbians, being completely infantilised, precious babies who don’t have any flaws or relationship problems. They’re just perfect and cute and sweet all the time and they have no personalities in themselves other than being in a wlw relationship.

And the Angry™ lesbian, any girl in the show that has a glimpse of power or anger. She’s a bitch, and men don’t like bitches, so she has to date a girl or be forever alone.

I think I’ll expand on more of my lesbophobic gripes another day, since a lot of them transcend stereotypical headcanons and go into straight-up villainy. But yeah, we’ll burn that can of worms when we lie in it.

In conclusion, headcanons are great, but we should all be wary about avoiding overused and/or harmful stereotypes. This is honestly why I think the best commonly accepted headcanon in this community is that Kyoya is trans, because it is solely based on the one (1) detail that makes it look like he's wearing a binder in Fury (although he does too much exercise for that to be healthy, so I like to think it's more of a sports bra).

Close enough where they'll do anything that the group asks. They all found the mission odd so they went to someone else, Sam. Sam gave them a new mission that would work for them all. Learn about the planet and the natives. However it wouldn't be easy because Kuron, Shiro's twin, was taking over their old mission. This causes trouble for Shiro, Matt, and their friends.

Romelle pairings with my rate🌸

(This is only my opinion and contribution to romelle because I run out of ideas jsjsb)

Alluromelle:

Rate: 7/10

I really like this ship a lot, because I think the two can pull off the relationship, and the fanart is so adorable. At the same time, I kinda don't want it to happen. I say this because I feel allura should fly solo in the series. Not because I don't think the girl deserves love, but I think after the heartbreak, she needs some time to heal, and I really wouldn't want anyone to end up as a rebound.

Komelle:

Rate: 9.9/10

The only reason I'm not giving this ship that extra .1 is because I've been a klance stan for way too long to give it up. I've shipped it, and hoped cannon before I started even watching voltron. Anyways, I really really really really really really fucking adore this ship because Keith has never been such a gentlemen?? Like, you can see those two as best friends, sibling-like relationship, a couple, AND YOU CAN STILL TELL THESE TWO HAVE THAT SPECIAL CONNECTION. And after season 6, I instantly wanted to see more of them together. Keith just did so much for her, and they really didn't have to trust Romelle, but he put all his faith into her. THE BOY LITERALLY DRAGS HER ACROSS THE UNIVERSE TO MAKE SURE HER WORD GETS OUT THERE. Get you a man that supports you like that??

Romatt:

Rate: 8/10

Okay, Romelle and Matt are my two most beloved characters in the show, no joke. Matt was originally my favorite character, until Romelle came along, and made my heart feel certain things. I didn't give the ship the 2 extra points it deserved, because I'm die hard Nymatt, and if Romatt is gonna overpower Nymatt, gotta slide over those interactions. Other than that, Matt using flirtatious pick up lines against Romelle is something worth crying over.

Shimelle(?):

Rate: 5/10

Ehhh, even though Sven is another version of shiro, and Sven did end up marrying Romelle in DotU, I don't know. I'm on the fence with this ship, I think it could be really cute and a responsible relationship. At the same time, I feel like the ship would just be squeezed in so that Shiro can have a love interest. Depends on how the relationship would build up.

Romance:

Rate: 8/10

I really enjoy the idea of this ship because I thought of a few parallel ideas myself. If they ever get a proper first impression, Romelle can comment on how his ears look ugly, just like how allura did. Lance wouldn't be flirting anymore, because he wouldn't want the same thing to happen to him, but Romelle is found of his goofy attitude. Falling in love with a different Altean, for who they are, is a whole goal right there. Too bad none of that actually happened lmao.

Pidgelle?:

Rate: 6/10

It's okay. I mean, I really don't believe these two will end up together, but I have a few ideas for why I'd like this ship. Pidge can show her different technologies Romelle didn't have access to on her planet. Show her how to play video games. There can also be a parallel, to when Romelle was startled by the Green Lion, to Pidge showing Romelle that Green is a good kitty.

Hunelle:

Rate: 7/10

It won't get the 10/10, because Hunk and Shay for the win, but if Shay didn't exist I can see it happen. I see the two more platonically, but if they were together, Hunk would make her feel like the most loved girl in the world. He would really smother her heart with sympathy for her family, and make her feel at home.

Lotelle:

Rate: 2/10

Overall would just be toxic in cannon. I mean, I've seen theories where they could've known each other beforehand. How Romelle could've been friends with him, to which why she had suspicions. I'm not against that theory, but overall just toxic. I feel they wouldn't even consider. MAYBE, JUST MAYBE before the second colony if they knew one another, but not now, never currently.

Kidge headcanon n.5 (little angst)

When the team returned on Earth after they won against Sendak, they decided to celebrate womens day since Allura, Romelle and Shay never celebrated one. So Shiro, Lance and Hunk went to the girls with a big bouquet of mimosas. So Allura though that "every gentleman gives to a lady a bouquet on this day" since Lance explained her what was womens day.

She got really mad with Keith, cause from him she didn't recieved any flower. But the real reason was that he was busy to buy the biggest bouquet ever for Pidge, the only one to which none has given anything....

Voltron Theory: Why Shiro x Romelle might be endgame for Voltron Legendary Defender

Before I start I should note that when I say endgame I do not mean wedding bells and kids. What I mean is they will probably be at the start of some sort of relationship. Whether that is holding hands or an actual kiss is up in the air, but regardless, I do believe that these two will end up as a couple, or at least proto couple and here’s why.

One of the things I’ve seen mentioned is the idea that the staff intend to have slow burning relationships. Meaning that it would develop over time, ala Lance and Allura. Yet we do have time for something to develop given that Shiro probably will not be back in the Black Lion. His role is now becoming more like Sven’s from the original. There to help the team but not the leader of the group. That is falling on Keith as the new Black Paladin.

So how does one do a slow burn relationship with a character that was just introduced? Well given the way that LM and JDS are talking in interviews, it seems like there will be a continuation of the story, since they have a lot more to tell. So the use of the last seasons (season if you count it as a full 26 episodes) as a spring board for such a romance would be useful.

You already also have a great set up with these two in regard to several elements of common ground that could build up a friendship and a possible romance. Both Shiro and Romelle have suffered at the hand of the Galra through Haggar and her son. Both have seen what blind loyalty can do and how others have suffered for it. And both are the older sibling figure in their own relationships.

With Shiro you have a large case of PTSD brought on by not only Haggar’s actions, but also the actions of her husband. Then there’s the fact that he died and was in the lion for a long while, dealing with his own trauma from that is going to be hard. We know also that his hair is now white, which may mean that he has ties now to the Altean magic which will not be easy. Given the situation with Sendak still out there, I have a feeling that Shiro’s going to have to confront this fear, and that won’t be an easy task for him, as Sendek basically said they were the same.

With Romelle you have someone who grew up in a prison, another similarity to Shiro via the gladiator events he was in. It was a nice prison, but still a gilded cage is still a cage. Naturally she would be worried and nervous about the outside world and what could happen to her out there. On top of that she suffered from the fact that she knew the truth but no one would believe her. You also have to consider she lost her whole family and her brother died in her arms. This was not something that she could easily get over and would need someone to help her, just as Shiro needs someone to help him.

The reason, I personally think, that they’re going to go this route with them is because it makes the most sense for both characters. Shiro is the big brother type and Romelle is about his age, it seems, given her physical look and her height compared to Bandor when he was leaving. Both understand the role of being strong and mentoring their younger sibling (Keith for Shiro, Bandor for Romelle) and I think that if anyone can understand the feelings Shiro’s going to go through as he deals with Keith now spending more time bonding with his mother, it would be Romelle. There will be a sense of loss there because, while Shiro will be happy for Keith, prior to him finding Krolia, he was the only adult figure in his life that seemed to understand Keith and his actions. He looked out for him and Romelle will understand this.

On the flip side I think Shiro would be the only one to understand the idea of failing to save someone that they care about. When his friend and ally died Shrio had to deal with that, and none of the others could get that loss. But he can understand that feeling for Romelle, and probably get it just as well as Keith could or better. Keith was a child when his father died, so naturally there was nothing he could do about the death. Romelle was an adult and could have stopped the situation with Bandor, but she didn’t and couldn’t at the time. Shiro had the same situation with his friend and possibly felt the same way about Matt and Dr. Holt. He was there and awake in the moment when Zarkon first brought them in, he had some idea of where they were going, and he could do nothing to stop the Doctor from being taken where he was, but he was able to save Matt. This I think he’d show her in regard to doing something to help her people back on the colony. She may not have been able to save her family but she can save the other Alteans.

There’s also the fact that, both Romelle and Shiro have several things that Already bond them and could give them more of a bond. First there’s Keith. They both share being saved by him. For Shiro it was with Lance, for Romelle it was with Krolia. The fact that both can have a conversation about Keith for a starter is a good thing. Another thing is their shared understanding of how dangerous the Galra can really be. Shiro was experimented on, Romelle’s family was lost to it. Then there’s the aspect we see of bother of them as being both determined even in the face of fear and having their own PTSD. Romelle’s is a hell of a lot smaller but that doesn’t negate the fact of what she felt, and the fact that she had to carry that feeling on her own for a unknown period of time. Shiro’s is far more in your face, but he had to carry that too for a long while when he was the leader of the team to keep everyone from getting mad at one another.

Another aspect is that both felt they wouldn’t be able to tell the truth and be believed. Shiro when he came back to earth was going to be tested and possibly hurt by the garrison to see what was going on with that arm. They didn’t want to listen to him about the Galra. In the colony Romelle knew that she wasn’t going to be believed about Lotor and couldn’t explain to anyone until Keith and Krolia arrived.

The fact that they have that much to talk about and share in regard to their own emotional states with one another I would think would give a hint about them working together to find a way to become more peaceful regarding their status as they are right now. This is not to mention their connection to Allura. The white hair on Shiro, I don’t doubt, is a hint that he’s going to have some level of magic in him from the Alteans, and Allura would have to teach him in some way. Romelle may or may not know magic, but clearly she’s going to want to learn what she can from Allura so the two also have Allura as a way to bond as she teaches them things about what she knows about Altea and it’s magic.

You can throw Krolia now in there as a parental figure and helper. And possibly the others who would want to know things about her.

Romantically, it also makes sense seeing as both are in a very vunrable place at the moment. The others have people to connect to. Allura with Coran, Keith and Krolia, Pidge and Matt, Lance and probably his family back on earth, Hunk and his family there too, etc. Each character now has someone, and, where as before, Shiro and Keith had only one another since neither brought up their family, now the only one that doesn’t seem to have a family mentioned is Shiro. Given the fact that he seemed to take in Keith so easily as a mentee it makes sense that he may not have family either and can understand how Keith felt. Romelle lost all her family, she is alone in this world and has no one to trust right now.

You could say, “well what about Allura? She and Coran are Altean”. True but they’re ancient alteans by her standards. Romelle is coming from a world where there was no ruling family, no King Alfor, and only Lotor was the main worship there. So she may not be as connective to Allura on the same level as she may with Shiro. Allura lost her family, as far as we know, but she has Coran and now she’ll have the people of the colony. She also has the Voltron team, so while yes she’s going to understand Romelle’s losses, she’s also going to have a bit of a disconnect because the circumstances were different. Shiro, on the other hand was more recent with his issues with the Galra, and if he, like Keith, lost his family, unlike with Allura, it’s a more fresh wound not 10,000 years ago.

There’s also the fact that they seemed to have set it up pretty well for Shiro to have a connection with Romelle because of the fact that Shiro probably won’t be doing a lot of work with the Castle. What I mean is that given Pidge’s dad will probably be with Coran and Allura figuring things out for it. You’ll have Keith and Lance helping out with making sure there’s room for the lions and working with pidge, hunk and allura to do their things as a team. Not to mention that when Alllura is not working with Romelle or talking to her about Altea, she’s going to be doing other things. So that places both of them with a lot of free time and time to get to know one another.

Romelle also seemed to want to know how to fly the plane, and clearly will want to know about earth culture. Shiro is the most likely person to do that for her as we’ve seen him be a teacher before.

It’s not a huge leap in logic to assume that Shiro and Romelle will both be working for the release of the Altean colony, so I’m sure that that will lead to them learning more about one another and having fun. Given that Romelle is one of Lauren’s favorite characters I don’t see her passing up the chance to have these two interact. And, given that Sven and Romelle’s romance played a key role in helping Sven get better, as well as the two working as a team as part of the ground resistant fighters, it’s no small guess to assume something of a similar nature for this show could show up and allow their friendship that I’m sure we’ll see cultivated, growing closer.

Now we don’t know the ending of this. But given Shiro’s age, and I’m guessing Romelle’s a lot older than Allura because, like Lotor, she wasn’t put to freezing sleep, it’s not so hard to see them using that as part of the reason that Shiro may hang around with Romelle and could, potentially, stay with her to help train the other alteans in flying or other things.

Honestly it makes the most sense for that set up with him because, he can’t go back as the black pilot, it would advance her as a character as well, it fits within the aspect of the story, and is an easier romance to develop over a short period of time or at least start it, then say figuring out all the complexities of a Lance, Allura, Keith or Lotor, triangle that they may create with the characters.

That’s why I honestly think that it makes sense for them to be endgame in regard to being close at the end of the show and possibly starting off on a new sort of relationship.
