thinking about 4halo again and dying

they just. they used to be so sweet together. and then the election arc managed to genuinely turn them against each other (and bad is still affected by being caged in the museum) and i would NOT have been surprised if a rebellion had started within the next few weeks after their last fight and. they used to be friends and then they almost destroyed each other

and then the eggs went missing

and there are so many parallels between them, but one of the biggest parallels is how they're both protectors. they both protected the eggs (and, when he became president, forever extended that protection to the other islanders) but the eggs went missing and they had to put all of that aside. Forever was quicker to put it down than Bad was (it felt like only a very temporary truce, from Bad's end), but they put their problems on hold, because their eggs. were gone.

and another parallel. the destruction. both of them with their plans to cause ruin because then, maybe, theyll get their kids back. bad caused most of the grieving arc damage directly, and got aypierre and antoine to help him. he dug holes in the ground. he placed mines everywhere and leapt into them. he started the lavacasting process of the fed building (and was interrupted by admins, so he stopped, but philza and fit were still right to laugh at him lmaoo). he drilled a hole through the side of the federation office from a huge distance away. he has chosen to hurt his friends and himself to get the eggs back. whatever the cost.

forever destroyed the island. or he planned to destroy the island. or he was interrupted just before he destroyed the island or or or. I don't know. but it was big, and it was bad. bad enough that the feds had to step in and forcefully drug him, and kickstart the happy pills arc.

and the happy pills arc..... oughghghgh as fucking awful as it was for their characters to experience i genuinely truly think that it saved them from each other. when he was first told about forever being fucked up bad was still in the "i need to kick his butt" mindset, and was all ready for an excuse to kill forever. and then he saw forever. and the first proposal happened. and bad was angry and he was sad and upset and he was careful. forever tried to kill him. bad decided to save him. forever kept trying to marry him. forever kept taking the pills. forever was so scared of his own anger and all of the damage he could and would have caused to his family that he kept taking drugs that kept him so out of his mind he hallucinated his son was just sleeping safely at his house.

and they both tried to kill each other. and they both failed.

and bad showed phil and cellbit (and tubbo) the item scanner that dapper discovered, which could destroy him, because nothing else was working. because they needed to save forever. because bad was reminded by then that forever was a victim of the federation instead of just a mouthpiece for it. and then when forever woke up he saw bad, suffering, and so excited to see him awake.

and now they're here on opposite sides again with forever projecting his protection urges onto the fed worker in bad's basement and bad frustrated that he isn't being believed and his evil plans of giving ron lemons apology brownies is being interrupted and. look at them. soft "i hate you" and the appreciation room and bad's quiet heartbreak when he learned about forever being missing and the "i miss you" book bad got mad at because it asked him not to torture fed workers. does anyone hear me im so ill about them. do you understand they care about each other so much and the happy pills arc reminded them of that. forever realized bad is colourblind and bad assumed forever was poisoning him and then forever helped bad cheat on another colourblindness test and forever was giving bad flowers and bad was accepting them and accepted that he was colourblind despite his previously constant denial and! i don't know if im being comprehensible and i dont really care i will be honest i just need you to know i am frothing at the mouth like a rabid little beast. they are a TRAGEDY of miscommunication and external pressure but they love so so much. platonic or romantic or qpp they CARE and it tears me to shreds

Aww thank you, Anon! I appreciate this so much. Yes, I have definitely had more than my share of stupid/hate mail (which you can see in my #the fact that i even gotta respond to this and #fandom woes tags) over the past few years. And it seems like every few months, a thread pops up on Twitter of people bashing RPF or anyone who talks about the possibility of Michael and David as a couple. I saw one such thread last night (not linking to it, cause it's not worth it), but I was struck by how...pointless...it seemed.

Because what I see--overwhelmingly--more than threads like that is comments like the Pinterest ones I've recently highlighted. Sometimes I see comments that are from as far back as four years ago, but I've seen a lot more newer comments, too. So the people who waste their time railing against RPF/shipping Michael and David seem willfully ignorant of the fact that a) A lot more people either don't care anymore because it's not a big deal/we have bigger issues to contend with; and b) Michael and David ship themselves with each other more than anyone else ever could.

It is interesting to me, what you said about this being something everyone sees. If that is the case, I do have to wonder why there is such an issue with me saying it out loud. Michael and David are over here calling each other their "other partner," "other wife," "lover," "emotional support pet" and so on and that's somehow fine, but then I get attacked for pointing out the possibility that maybe--maybe--they might not be joking. Or are telling the truth in the guise of a joke. And what really grates my cheese is that I've always said that I am more than open to the idea that Michael and David are just friends and nothing has happened between them...yet the anti-shipping crowd won't even consider the idea that something has, or that they could be more than friends.

I also think it's noteworthy that there truly are countless pictures of Michael and David looking like a couple. Not only from the GO press tour, and not only from 2019, but consistently over the past four years. Even when they're not in the same room, that 'vibe' is always present (such as on TLL, when Michael straight up bought David on national television and said he was going to keep him in his basement). And that's what I see people commenting on--casual fans who (for any number of reasons) more often than not pair Michael with David (and vice-versa) instead of their own partners.

So yes, it has been frustrating to see people getting butthurt (that Twitter thread from last night got under my skin somewhat because I was just starting to write a new MS/DT fic, and it felt like someone throwing a wet blanket on my ideas). But as I've said before, I would much rather people come for me than another person who would be far more affected/devastated by it. I will always talk honestly about the things I see and the observations I make, and I'm happy that my blog has become a place for people to safely share their thoughts, too.

Hopefully the discourse will improve some when GO 2 comes out (and if/when there is a press tour) and we get to see Michael and David together again. In the meantime, I'm so glad to have received your message, Anon. Thanks for writing in! x

I never stop getting annoyed when I see folks claim "anti-shipping" is some kind of equivalent movement to puritanism, homophobia, misogyny or anti-ace rhetoric (all comparisons that I've seen lately.)

The reason that it's so annoying is that there is no real "anti-ship" movement. No one is out there saying "you cannot ship anyone anywhere in any media." (Okay, there might have been one weirdo on twitter, but a single batshit person is not a movement.)

Now, there are people who are "anti" SPECIFIC ships. This may be for good, bad, general or specific reasons. A person might dislike Thorki, for example, because they dislike the dynamic they see on screen. Maybe they dislike either Thor or Loki as individuals. Maybe they dislike incest ships. Maybe they dislike ships involving two men. Maybe they dislike how shipping dominates the fandom discussion.

I'm not trying to claim these reasons are all equal, by the way. They're just examples.

Admittedly, there are fans who are often anti a specific TYPE of ship. Maybe they don't like any incest ships. Maybe they don't like ships with a large age gap or power inequality. Maybe they're just not into het-shipping That happens sometimes. People have tastes and squicks, some reasonable, some not.

I'm not going to say that either of these groups can't engage in bad behavior. Obviously many do. That shouldn't happen. No one should be harassed or mistreated because of something involving fictional people. (Or even involving real people, on the assumption that these fans are not using their RPF to harass the actual people involved. Some assholes do that. Most shippers do not.)

But even the most extreme fandom purist ships something. Probably something boring. Though still waters do run deep, so who the fuck knows. Even the folks, like me, who tend to wish that shipping didn't dominate the fandom to the level that it does, and loudly lament the scarcity of genfic, have a few ships that we like and enjoy.

There is no big "anti-ship" movement. There is no group saying "no one can ever imagine anyone falling in love or having sex ever". That is not a thing that exists.

People like to pretend that there's a big anti-ship movement because then they can pretend that the simple act of fantasizing about two fictional characters fucking is some kind of activism. It also means, of course, that anyone who DISLIKES that particular configuration of fictional characters fucking is part of this awful, oppressive, puritanical movement that should be silenced like hate speech.

No. Sorry. Shipping isn't activism. It's just a way to enjoy a product. And sometimes, someone can dislike something you love, and say so, and you just have to deal with that. No one's taste is universal.

< I said this earlier in frustration over fans who claim to love fucked up dynamics, enemies to lovers, unhealthy romances, etc. yet they go out of their way to do whatever possible to absolve the offending partner, or situation, so it's palatable yet still hide behind "you just don't like x ship because it's fucked up" like, no, I'm annoyed! I'm annoyed because it could be interesting! Even if it's not a good healthy ship but then you went and erased interesting aspects of it and claim it wasn't "His/Her fault bc they had x trauma" or demonized another non ship character to take the heat off the ship dynamic, and then you have the gall, the stones, the balls if you will, to claim I don't understand because I can't accept something that isn't pure or good?

The reason I didn't want to post this is because I know it will get turned into a Pro vs Anti Fandom ship debate and I am sick to death of those. This isn't about that.

I'm not into fictional ships for it all to be pure and good, sometimes I want to see fictional characters tear each other apart emotionally because of what happened in canon so erasing characters actions takes away so much. But sure, I don't understand the characters, I'm wrong for not subscribing to this weird "fucked up romance lite" thing that fans push onto fandom.
