had a very random urge to draw my old Wings of Fire ocs, i havent drawn most of them in such a long time and i’m so far behind on the book series, but i still think they’re neat

Anyways, this is Shadowspinner. She used to be a Night/Icewing hybrid, but eventually settled into just a pure-bred nightwing. The light colored spikes in her back are a rémanent from her old designs, as they used to be an icy white color

Some fun facts about her are that she’s mean and has a pinkish-purple flame instead of the normal orange-red color

my current wip is spinnerman. the star of the show is picket, who lives in a fairy tale kingdom with her father, a woodcutter anarchist. when he gets a little too woke in front of the queen, picket has to make a deal with a mysterious being called shadowspinner to save his life. adventures ensue. they kind of fall in love and they’re both mad about it.

writing it has been slow because, you know, grad school. but it’s a lot of fun in concept and i think once we start reading bad ya fae romances over break i will be more motivated

perhaps protagonists should have interests and desires that drive the plot forward

why are we still stuck on monarchies in ya fantasy, anyway

maybe if you make your dumbledore expy literally the only anti-racism voice in your book - literal real-world racism, not just fantasy racism - that character shouldn’t be the villain, and when you kill him off, it shouldn’t be the happy ending that the old wizard families go back to business as usual. JUST A THOUGHT!

in a small village in the shadow of the mountains where a famous goblin sorcerer lives, never-cross-a-picket-line “picket” mossley lives with her father, a woodcutter who is also an anarchist. when he gets a little too woke in front of the queen, picket calls on the sorcerer to make a deal for his life. instead, she gets a mysterious being called the shadowspinner. shenanigans ensue.

there’s an evil fairy, an ogre trying to keep the giants from unionizing, a witch with a menagerie, a runaway princess, the repeated theme of the sins of the parents, and uhhhhh two people falling in love and both getting mad about it.

(this is the easiest to pitch of all my stories.)

Kingsguard: Book One of The Wings of Oberon

As the sun sank down below the Realm, the Wold came to life, and the spiders moved in.

“Sound the charge,” Resin said to Spiderkiss, and the old gobesh grinned at him, her teeth filed to sharp points. She raised her voice in a war-cry, and her spider launched itself off the branches. The runners disappeared into their bolt-holes. When they returned, it was with long spears in hand.

The first of the faeries hit the webs and tangled hopelessly as they discovered, to their horror, just how well the goblin runners did their jobs. Everywhere they turned, the webs closed in, and more fell around them as Shadowspinner Jumpers shot through the trees trailing nets that hung up on leaf and branch and wing equal­ly, closing off any hope of escape. The faeries faltered, trapped, and that was all the archers needed. Arrows flew, and bodies rained out of the trees, some dead, but many wounded and still struggling to escape.

“Tarragon, that banner,” Snow said when she spotted it, too far away to make out, but edged in gold and bigger than the rest, car­ried by a fast-moving wedge of flyers.

“It’s-” she shaded her eyes with one hand. “Crossed- crossed sword and spear with a crown over, in silver on black. Wasn’t that the seal on the letter the Shadow King sent us?”

Tarragon grabbed her arm as he forgot whatever he was about to say.

“Are you sure?” he demanded, squinting at it himself. He swore when she nodded, now able to see the banner as it cut though the forces towards the front line, faerie bodies fell away as the soldiers clashed.

Whoever they were, the new force was unstoppable. Snow’s wings faltered with cold terror. Until now, they had been able to hold the goblins off. What new nightmare was this? “That must be their royal banner. You have to get to the king!”
