Throwback Thursday-- In Mandarin class last grading period, we did an analysis of two poems and connected them to one common theme with a drawing of our own. This was at the same time our band @scalewulf was preparing for our debut performance, and I felt a lot of the words from each connected to the theme of our first song we were performing there at the same time. ••• The lyrics are very personal to my experiences with dissociation and existential dread, unhealthy attempts to cope with pain by avoiding it. Rather than teaching oneself to grow cold and denying of hurt's conceptuality, I believe it is important to acknowledge the intensity of our feelings in the moment before we question the presence of our perception as elements in an omnipresent universe. In time, succumbing to sensitivity will help not only oneself escape from a black-holed spiral, but also learn to be sensitive for other beings, creating one's own meaning to accept the unknown. "And it is in live perfomances that FLIPPER continue to prove themselves, night after night. I remember one performance, a few years ago, in the now defunct Elite Club. To get things going, Shatter and bassist/songwriter/singer Bruce Lose stood onstage drinking beer, smoking cigarettes while guitarist Ted Falconi and drummer DePace created the classic FLIPPER wall-of-noise. Casually, as if he were a part of the band, a member of the audience climbed onto the stage, grabbed a microphone and improvised lyrics. Only at a FLIPPER concert."

For pop legend Chris Isaak, the hair can remain the same, but the wardrobe could use an update It’s a quiet Sunday afternoon in Mysterious Rack, a vintage record shop in San Francisco’s Outer Richmond neighborhood. The shop, which opened earlier this year, is decked out in romper-room pink-and-green, with funky posters on the walls and a tiki bar in the corner, watched over by a cut-out of Debbie Harry.Pete Gowdy, the “record nerd” manning the counter, is keeping his eye on a trim middle-aged guy wearing 1950s-style surfer gear, his hair swept into a rockabilly quiff. The man is one of only two customers in the store, and Gowdy has pegged him as Chris Isaak, the pop singer who reached his peak in the early 1990s.With Gowdy looking on, Isaak digs around in boxes of randomly cataloged LPs, then stops before a poster on the wall bearing his own image, promoting a show that took place three decades earlier.“I wondered if you’d notice that,” says Gowdy. “Do you remember the show?”“Oh yeah,” Isaak replies. He stands looking at the poster for a while, reeling off the names of the pouting band members pictured beside him, then squints and leans further in. “Man, I gotta go shopping,” he finally says, turning and making for the door. “I’m wearing the same shirt.” —CHRIS WRIGHT

In case you missed it, @superiorviaduct released an AMAZING Crime set near Xmas -- a DVD of killer quality footage from 1978 that was shot for an aborted cable access show, and never seen until now! And it comes with a great 2x7″ with songs from the live sets in the half-hour film. If you are a Crime fan, or fan of original-era American punk rock at all, it is ESSENTIAL!

We’re Desperate “The eye of Jim Jocoy finds beauty in the wild. Jocoy dropped out of school to work at a copy shop. At night he would hit up clubs armed with a camera ready to document anything and everything. Snapping away as the evening unfurled in front of him. The result, an archive of San Francisco’s exploding punk scene from 1977 to 1980, a series of images that have only seen the light of day twice during those times.
