The First Motorhome!
Remember when things were so much simpler?  The Ford House-Car Q-dog
Tumblr media
This is one of only six Ford House-cars said to have been made per year in the mid-30's at the Ford plant in St. Paul, Minnesota, according to an article in a 1993 "Old Cars" magazine.
Very few others - perhaps none - remain on the road and certainly not in such amazing original condition!
When discovered in a garage under a heavy cover in northern Minnesota in August of 2001, it had only 19,000 miles on the odometer and the owner's manual was still in the glove box in like-new condition!
The RV had always been garaged and treated with much 'TLC' as a collector vehicle.
The all wood lined interior was still the way it appeared in the '30's complete with framed photos of the original owner on his travels, mainly to Florida, and his cabin in the North Woods. It also had other memorabilia from that era.
The Ford House-car was built on a '37 Ford Pickup frame and cowling and was powered by a 60 horse power, flathead V-8 with aluminum heads. The rear framing is all wood, with the metal skin wrapped around it. The roof structure is all wood over which the heavy, waterproofed canvas top is still very securely fitted. The structure of the body is solid, appearing to be all oak hardwood and it's still in a remarkably unaltered, undamaged condition! The door frames are thick, solid oak as are the window frames although those have been painted over.
This House-car was a big hit at this campground once we got that great old 'flattie' V-8 hummin'! Note the expanding roof (it's that 'extra' roof piece barely visible in the picture) and the original dark green color, which has been repainted. All four side windows open while the back one tilts out in three positions. The windshield also tilts open at the bottom for 'natural' AC while driving. Here are a few shots of the Ford House-car on the road...

Here's a look at the interior.
It's a slice right out of 1930's just as the original owner had it. All the windows have curtains for privacy and there are pull-down shades on the back window, as well as on the driver's and passenger door windows. Note the wide storage cabinet under the bed.

The wood headliner gives the 'cabin' a warm and inviting rustic feel. You can also see it has a ceiling vent and the canvas expanding roof portion visible in this picture. Four wood pieces securely support the expansion when it's in the 'up' position, while clamps secure it when it's down while traveling.

Note the cedar branches hanging in the corners to give the cabin a natural, north woods aroma. Cabinets and the aluminum sink, that includes a wooden cover insert, are visible on the left. All the antiques inside, as well as on the walls, came along for the ride. Also note the collapsible table behind the driver's seat.

It's amazing how simple vehicles were back then! No computerization to be concerned about!

Hymer Venture S, 2023. Based on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, the Venture S is the series production version of an earlier concept camper van. The 2-person off-roader van has a narrow vehicle body for easily manoeuvrability. There’s an “Instant Loft” pop-top roof with solar panels and an integrated desk behind the passenger’s seat that can be set up as a workstation.

1936 Pontiac Six 4.0-Litre Motorhome Coachwork by Russell’s of Bexhill. This Pontiac motorhome was ordered new by a Captain Dunn of Bexhill, Kent through a local coachbuilder by the name of Russell. The vehicle was ordered in 1935 from the USA and arrived in this country as a driveable chassis with front wings, bonnet, and scuttle. When the vendor’s father first acquired the Pontiac, he contacted Russell’s of Bexhill and informed them of its existence. Mr Russell, a member of the firm’s founding family owners, revealed that the Dunn family had been very close friends with both his parents and grandparents. He then invited the owners to the Bexhill Festival of Motoring, which they attended with their renovated Pontiac motorhome the following spring. After replacing its old oil and petrol, and fitting a new battery, the 4.0-litre six-cylinder engine had started within one turn of the starter and has run sweetly ever since. The Pontiac had been painted khaki in anticipation of its being used as an ambulance during WW2. The interior remains just as it was found, though a boat builder was commissioned to re-varnish the woodwork in the correct dull gloss finish. All curtains and linoleum are original, as are all the fixtures and fittings. 1970 Ford Camelot Cruiser Motorhome
That unicorn held the unofficial title of the world’s most luxurious motorhome. At $150,000 the base price, which would be more than $900,000 adjusted for inflation in today’s money. There are three of them in the world.

Postcards from Snagglepuss
And Gatlinburg awaits!
OFF I-39/90 AT A TRUCK STOP OUTSIDE JANESVILLE, WI: "You know, Snagglepuss," Huckleberry Hound was observing as we were getting the journey underway again in our motorhome, "having the Cattanooga Cats hosting an informal Easter parade down Gatlinburg way seems so--"
"Quixotic. Interesting, even," saith I to compensate for Huck's being in a struggle for words apropos the moment. "Especially with the routing bypassing Chicago--I-39, for the most part, down to Bloomington, Illinois ... thence on I-74 via Indianapolis to Cincinnati, maybe a bowl or two of Cincinnati chili, even ... joining I-75 from the Queen City to Knoxville, Tennessee, thence on US 441 into the Queen Mother of Tourist Traps!"
"And I've oft wondered why exactly Gatlinburg would be such a 'gold standard,' so to speak, for tacky tourist-dependent communities," mused Huck over a substantial-size soda as he was filling the motorhome with diesel fuel, preceded by some additive supposed to improve engine performance--especially after winter storage.
Which also saw Crazy Claws, our guest this time around, get some decent(?) Wisconsin cheese, sausage and crackers in a not-so-touristy sort of manner, which he put down to "just wanting to get some decent snacking out of the way without the 'cheese shop' markups as seem common to tourist areas. Wisconsin Dells included, come to think of it!"
"At least Crazy Claws had some sense in his mind," Huck added.
Yet what was especially worthwhile was the meetup of The King and girlfriend Sheena, he in a denim jeans jacket looking so cool and Sheena in a V-neck sweater, considering the coolish weather. But at least they followed a sort of Funatstic tradition we've established while travelling of travelling light, packing pretty much the essentials (maybe a couple days' change of clothes, consider some time at a laundromat at destination before returning, and essential toiletries and medications, if required).
"Heeeeeeyyyyyy ... and heeeeeeyyyyy again!" was how The King made his presence known into the motorhome, doing the old Edd Byrnes number with the Brylcreem and pocket comb along that glossy leonine mane of his. "And I take it we are heading for the Great Smoky Mountains over Easter?"
"I take it you received our message by text," explained I.
"Actually, King and Sheena," Huckleberry Hound remarked, "it's that the Cattanooga Cats--as in that Gatlinburg coffee shop of theirs, Cattanooga Klatsche--are arranging an impromptu Easter Parade of sorts in Gatlinburg along the Parkway on Easter Sunday!"
"Ohhh," Sheena purred oh so seductively, "I can't help but seriously appreciate what coffees the Cattanooga Cats manage to come up with!"
"I take it," Huck asked, "you order your coffees from Cattanooga Klatsche?"
"Correctamundo" was how The King responded with his usual leonine swagger. "You never tasted anything better--especially when it's whole bean, and ground back at home! Especially when you can blend two such varieties, impromptu, and grind them together!"
"Hopefully," Crazy Claws chimed in, "you can stand some not-so-touristy Wisconsin cheeses and sausages for the odd snacking as we head down to Gatlinburg."
"And who else," Sheena remarked, "will be joing us?"
"It'll be rather interesting," saith I. "And we have a couple more Funtastic types joining us down the road--let alone many others perhaps heading to Gatlinburg before too long." (This as we were driving back onto I-39, which is part of I-90 into Rockford, with tolling prevailing until the I-39 junction just on the southeast side of Rockford; I-39 continuing southward with US 51 to Bloomington.)
