I think one of the biggest differences between bangel and spuffy is that angel isn’t a partner to buffy. he’s not even someone she knows that well. he’s not someone she’s ever familiar with, and he’s not someone she can ever fully rely on.

yeah their romance was big and grand and all the things a tragic fairytale romance is. but at the end of the day their relationship is so incredibly surface level. all there is is the idea of love, and not even the real thing.

surprise is such a good episode for the vampire crowd like it rly takes the season one, half - baked soul lore of ' its a demon and it takes ur body but ur not really the human version of yourself thats dead ' and sort of puts that idea in a box and shakes it up bc the judge's first words to spike and dru are "u two stink of humanity u share AFFECTION 🥺 and jealousy" but then meets angelus and is like oh yeah .. there's not a spec of humanity on this one and to me .. to me ... that's just chefs kiss like what makes them different ? and like its LOVE 🥺

One of the really fun things about Buffy the Vampire Slayer as a series is that they can’t have all the men looking like giants next to Sarah Michelle Gellar, who is objectively relatively short for a lead Hollywood actress, so you end up with so many supporting men that are short kings. Like. Oz, the ultimate short king. Hello? Need I say more? And secondly, you end up with Buffy regularly kicking ass in high heels which was a big win for gay women everywhere so I think we all really benefited from this situation.

The way some people characterise Buffy in fics like you described genuinely put me off Buffy fandom for years, it was absolutely everywhere, in Spuffy fics, in faith/buffy fics, it felt like I couldn't read a fic without the obligatory 'Buffy apologises to whoever the fuck for being so mean' and I just stopped, it was so baffling

For real its so weirdly pervasive. It genuinely blows my mind bc I totally get the urge to use your fic to call out a character/plot point you don't like, more power to you. Like I'm constantly imagining rewrites of the scenes where Xander is at his most insufferable but no one in-show is verbalising obvious holes in his bullshit (my big one is that besides a one off line from Buffy that everyone in the show ignores and a DELETED line from Giles is that NO ONE calls him on his absolutely infuriating "I was jealous of Angel being with the girl I like and I'm gonna have the gall to pretend it was bc I saw him turning evil coming" BULLSHIT)

But like. Buffy? You came out of this show and the person you had beef with and want to call out is BUFFY? THE VAMPIRE SLAYER? The protagonist of all time? Bc she's mean sometimes :( people try to apologise for trying to kill her and she's so unsympathetic :( she carries out her responsibility as the Slayer whether she wants to or not even if the person she's targeting is a character I like :( why won't she apologise. why won't she apologise. why does she insist on taking up space. why can't she just be nice all the time. yes my ao3 tag is princessspuffy why do you ask. yeah I know their relationship is abusive but I think Spike would forgive her :)

Buffy the Vampire Slayer takes place in a world full of demons and magic and werewolves and invisible girls and convincingly human-like robots; in a world where the Russian Revolution took place in 1905 and a song released in 1957 could be a hit in 1955 and high school sports coaches can use declassified Soviet research to turn teenagers into fish monsters; in a world where vampire attacks are commonplace enough that the police have a standard lie ready to deploy about them and where weekly student deaths are not reason enough to shut down the local high school.

But so far, forty-one episodes into my rewatch, the most fantastic and least plausible thing in the show by some distance is the fact that Buffy still willingly chooses to socialize with Xander Harris.

#btvs #yes it's very boring and obvious to say that Xander sucks and is a terrible friend who is weirdly obsessed about Buffy's sex life #but unfortunately that's the version of the character that the writers consistently put in the show #I genuinely cannot fathom why Buffy lets him talk to her the way he so routinely does #(or what Cordelia is supposed to see in him for that matter) #at this point I am just desperately clinging to the thought that Xander will start to become more tolerable soon
