Fluent Freshman - Part 05
PREVIOUS
It might be objectively funnier if no one knows Fluent Freshman’s first name (even me because there’s some funny ideas but nothing as funny as “UNKNOWN” Smith) aside from Wymack.
Even the announcers just refer to him by his last name (maybe his first name is very foreign and hard to pronounce, maybe that’s why he got into foreign languages, maybe it’s so bland that the announcers just can’t his full name without yawning, maybe it’s just that someone else on the Foxes has the same first name so there’d be confusion, who knows) This only occasionally creates confusion because the Terrapins and the Ravens both have someone with the same last name as him.
Either way after one-two hit confidence crushing combo of the CVS girl knowing he has tummy trouble and the conversation with Neil where Neil asks about his stomach ulcers FF utilizes all of his years of learned behavior to fully fade into the background. Wallflower? No man I’m Wallpaper you cannot see me.” This has unintended consequences.
1. He has become undetectable which means that he is now, once again, hearing all sorts of relationship talk but now it’s not just between Captain Neil and Andrew Minyard and their surprisingly soft private life.
He is subjected to Nicky gushing to Erik in German. He has to listen to Kevin talk to someone named Jean in French (he only finds out later that they’re NOT dating but it sounds like date talk...though most of his experience is listening to Captain Neil and Andrew Minyard loving say they hate one another so maybe he has a bad pool of knowledge.) Matt, Aaron, Jack, and some of his other freshman players all speak in English but CHRIST he wishes it was in any language he doesn’t know. (If he hears Jack say ‘Yeah sure whatever Babe.’ one more time HE’S going to slap the asshole for being so dismissive to his girlfriend.)
2. He has become objectively better at being a defensive dealer because other teams just kind of don’t notice him and pass right to him. Kevin wants to study him on what about him makes him so adept at causing unforced errors in objectively better players. Fluent Freshman, having been yelled at by Kevin more than once, takes the moment Kevin’s eyes are diverted by Captain Neil saying something and just slides out of his seat into a different seat (Middle of the bus. The least noticeable section) and puts up his hoodie and pretends to sleep. (he does not. what if he drools? It’s already hard enough getting sleep in a room with two roomies. He got to campus earliest so that he could claim a top bunk so no one could see him even if heights make him nervous.)
3. Since he has become undetectable that means that Andrew Minyard and Captain Neil have a hard time detecting him. So he has not had to endure their silent judging company. He is sure that Andrew is waiting for him to slip and he’s also sure that Captain Neil thinks he’s stupid. No other freshman gets as much homework help from the Captain as he does. Still, he doesn’t have to sit in the silent knowledge that they both dislike him enough that they want him to know it. HIs ulcers are starting to get better and the girl at the CVS (He’d have to have a whole conversation to change where his prescription is filled and he’d rather die) didn’t even recognize him when he came in for a refill on his prescription or note that he was buying pepto bismol again.
HOWEVER
This means that Neil has come back with slumped shoulders and uneaten snacks the last five times he’s gone for his usual hangout. They are never planned hangouts it’s just that FF is always in the same 3 locations because there are only so many spots on campus where your back is completely secured and that weren’t so intimidating to go into (The library is terrifying. What if he sneezes???) and for the last two weeks Andrew has been unable to find FF outside of practice either.
(It has to be stated that FF is in the EXACT same spots as before but he is in stealth mode and therefore only visible if you are a mantis shrimp.)
Andrew Minyard does NOT like this. FF is THE singular tolerable teammate. Andrew likes the decompression time  he gets when him and FF sit in quiet and do their own things. FF never asks for his attention but occasionally offers him good german literature recommendations for every stage of literacy ever since Andrew had mentioned wanting to get better at the written language so he wouldn’t have to rely on Neil or Nicky when the Monsters vacationed there next summer. He doesn’t call people friend easily but FF is a friend.
So it’s incredibly irritating that for the last two weeks he’s been completely unable to grab that friend and ask what the hell is going on. The Foxes have histories and it wouldn’t be the first time a Freshman’s past caught up with them or that one of them had something set them back into old survival habits. It’d happened with Matt, it’d happened with Aaron and Andrew, it for SURE happened with Neil, Sheena’s coping mechanisms had been the bane of Andrew’s existence the year before, some of the other freshman had setbacks this year and a few players over the years have had to leave due to the very circumstances that gave them a home with the Foxes. Andrew had never really cared as long as his people were fine.
It’s just that Andrew actually kind of cares about this Freshman, he considers him as someone who could be one of his people.
Which is why Andrew will keep stalking the campus around FF’s preferred haunts until he grabs him.
Andrew catches him outside of stealth mode (He had been using a urinal that is NOT where you don’t want people to notice you) and grabs him by the scruff. “We’re taking a drive.” he says and FF just sort of goes limp and lets himself be dragged off.
He hopes that he can write his grandma a letter telling her how much her love and care over the years meant to him before Andrew kills him. He’d even take if Andrew would only let him write it in his own blood.

A look at three Fouché biographies
Over the past few months I've read three English-language biographies on Fouché: Joseph Fouché: Portrait of a Politician, by Stefan Zweig; Fouché: Unprincipled Patriot, by Hubert Cole; and Medusa's Head: The Rise and Survival of Joseph Fouché, Inventor of the Modern Police State, by Rand Mirante. These are a great example of how dramatically interpretations of a historical figure can vary from one historian to another (see also the difference between Alan Schom's interpretation of Napoleon vs. that of Andrew Roberts). And also a great example of why it’s a good idea to read multiple biographies on the same figure, to gain a more well-rounded perspective, instead of simply accepting/adopting that of the first biographer you read.
Zweig is a colorful writer and his biography is highly entertaining—he actually had me laughing out loud a few times—but his depictions of Fouché are so hilariously sinister and malignant throughout that at times it almost feels like a caricature. Zweig also utilizes the least amount of primary source material out of the three biographers--hardly any, actually--and so much of what he writes in regard to Fouché's motivations and thoughts come across as pure speculation or projection, but are always stated very matter-of-factly. Zweig presents a Fouché who chafes at the smallness of the roles he is given, driven by "unflinching selfishness." "When in power," Zweig writes, "he does not work for the State, does not work for the Directory or for Napoleon, but for himself." Aside from raw ambition, Zweig attributes most of Fouché’s actions to his sheer delight in engaging in intrigue for the sake of intrigue, an interpretation that seems to come straight out of Napoleon’s venting on St. Helena: “Intrigue was to Fouché a necessary of life. He intrigued at all times, in all places, in all ways, and with all persons. Nothing ever came to light, but he was found to have had a hand in it. He made it his sole business to look out for something that he might be meddling with. His mania was to wish to be concerned with everything.” Overall, Zweig’s book is worth reading, but out of the three English-language Fouché biographies, it’d be ranked third on my list.
Hubert Cole’s interpretation of Fouché is as different from Zweig’s as night is from day. The key word in Cole’s title is “Patriot,” and Cole’s central point is that Fouché, at each point in his career, was doing what he believed was in the best interests of France, even if that meant negotiating for peace with Britain behind Napoleon’s back, or pushing Napoleon towards a divorce and remarriage for the sake of shoring up the Bonaparte dynasty, or even (repeatedly) abandoning one master to serve another. This is the second one of Cole’s biographies I’ve read, and as most of you following me already know, I loved his dual biography on Joachim and Caroline Murat, the deceptively named The Betrayers, which is actually a very sympathetic look at the Murat couple. Cole is no fan of Napoleon and doesn’t really attempt to hide it, and maybe it’s because of this that he feels inclined to look deeper at the motivations and actions of those who ended up in opposition to Napoleon at various points (and who have therefore been demonized in history books accordingly). Cole draws heavily on primary sources, from letters and memoirs of Fouché’s contemporaries, to Fouché’s police bulletins (quoted at length throughout) to argue that “It is possible… that he was a sincere and moderately successful patriot. It is not uncommon in France for egoists to be hailed as patriots, and patriots condemned as traitors.” Far from the sinister, cold-blooded figure that haunts Zweig’s biography, or the “universally distrusted, feared, and hated” social pariah of Mirante’s, Cole's Fouché is charming, a welcome figure in the drawing rooms of Paris society, with a preference for making friends rather than enemies; nevertheless Cole does not deny that Fouché could also be ruthless, ambitious, and cunning. Cole also uses numerous accounts regarding Fouché by British, German, and Russian contemporaries, “in the belief that their prejudices, if national, are less personal.” Out of these three biographies, this one was my personal favorite, as I think it provides a more well-rounded picture of Fouché as a human being.
The primary focus of Mirante’s book is Fouché’s administration of the Ministry of Police, and the biography goes into great detail about the operations of the police in Napoleonic France, its vast network of informants, subversion of the press, surveillance of emigrés, and steady stream of information flowing in from all quarters. Fouché emphasized to his subordinates how one small detail or event could be “of great interest in the general order of things by its connections with related matters of which you are scarcely aware.” Like Cole, Mirante quotes frequently from Fouché’s police bulletins, as well as from memoirs of the era (though most of the excerpts are those hostile to Fouché). Unlike Cole, Mirante’s Fouché is driven not by any higher patriotism, but—especially after his humiliating flight from France in 1810—by a deep and abiding hatred of Napoleon, towards whose final destruction Fouché is willing to go to any length. Mirante provides more detail on Fouché’s exile and final years than either Zweig or Cole, one interesting aspect of which is the warm welcome Fouché received in Trieste from Elisa Bonaparte, who had been driven from power in Tuscany largely through Fouché’s machinations with Murat in 1814. Mirante ends the book with a critical look at Fouché’s dubious, ghostwritten “memoirs,” the credibility of which he is far more suspicious than Cole, who accepts the argument of French historian Louis Madelin that they are “largely authentic and accurate.” Mirante, on the other hand, is not convinced, and concludes that the memoirs are “highly assailable, at least quasi-spurious, and shrouded in controversy and deceit.” Mirante ends by drawing parallels between Fouché’s policing methods and those of the Gestapo and NKVD in the 20th century.
Overall I enjoyed all three of these for different reasons, and taken together they offer a more complete picture of Fouché. I haven’t gotten around to reading any French-language biographies on Fouché yet, but I do have a couple works on him by Emmanuel de Waresquiel that are definitely on my to-read list.

Hi! I was wondering is there an actual source stating that calling Napoléon "Buonaparte" was meant as derogatory? I've read here (https://mrodenberg.com/2012/09/13/bonaparte-or-buonaparte/) that on Saint-Helena, the British addressed him as that to undermine his legitimacy as French ruler. Also, I know of another historical figure, Prieur de la Côte-d'Or, who not being very fond of him used the same appellation when talking about Napoleon
Hey! Yes, it was definitely used in a derogatory way to delegitimize Napoleon’s rule by denying his frenchness. Napoleon’s brother, Louis, commented on this in his A Reply to Sir Walter Scott’s History of Napoleon in 1829:
Another visible object is, that of desiring to make Napoleon pass as a foreigner in France. In fact, if such were not the intentions of the author, why this obstinacy in writing the family name of Napoleon, Buonaparte, instead of Bonaparte, consecrated as it is by long habit? Certainly the letter O is not more or less noble or French than the letter U, but it is done to impress a foreign character upon Napoleon, and divide his glory from that of France.
The Italian nation is sufficiently glorious for one to be proud of belonging to it, especially of deriving one’s origin from this beautiful country; but when one has been born under the laws of France, grown up on its soil, with no other knowledge of foreign countries, even of beautiful Italy, than that gained with the victorious legions of France, it is rather too ridiculous to receive from an English author the certificate of a foreigner.
The name Buonaparte was being used by the coalitions before the St. Helena years, especially by the British, so there are quite a lot of examples.
To be clear, Buonaparte was Napoleon’s birth name and the name he preferred to go by for over 20 years. He changed his name during the French Revolution during a wave of name changes across France to more revolutionary and patriotic names. That being said, Bonaparte is already listed as his name on his baptism certificate* in 1771 (“Neapoleone Bonaparte”) when he was nearly 2 years old, which is 3 years into French rule of Corsica. On the same document, his father’s name is spelled as Buonaparte.
It’s a little complicated. The spelling of names weren’t very standardized and were subject to a lot of variation. But the usage of the name Buonaparte was definitely intentional among Napoleon’s enemies. You can tell pretty easily when someone is saying it in a bad faith manner.
From the historian Andrew Roberts (Napoleon: A Life):
For decades thereafter, British and Bourbon propagandists re-inserted the ‘u’ in order to emphasize Napoleon’s foreignness, such as in François-René de Chateaubriand’s snappily titled 1814 pamphlet Of Buonaparte and the Bourbons and the Necessity of Rallying Round our Legitimate Princes for the Happiness of France and that of Europe, in which he wrote: ‘No hope was left of finding among Frenchmen a man bold enough to dare to wear the crown of Louis XVI. A foreigner offered himself, and was accepted’ (Chateaubriand, Of Buonaparte p. 5). Even after the British royal family changed the name of their dynasty from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to Windsor in 1917, some British historians still ridiculed Napoleon for dropping the ‘u’ from his surname.
It becomes obvious when people change how they refer to Napoleon depending on their current stance or relationship with him. For example, when France and Russia were allies, Tsar Alexander I calls him Napoleon or even the Emperor Napoleon. But when the alliances change and Napoleon is removed from power, Alexander referred to him as Buonaparte.
From the historian Marie-Pierre Rey (Alexander I):
Alexander’s use of the Corsican family name of Buonaparte is interesting, implying that for Alexander Napoléon was no longer emperor of the French — and not even French by nationality!
So there were two purposes to calling him Buonaparte: to accentuate his commoner origins as well as his foreignness in order to delegitimize his authority as head of state.
Thanks for the interesting question!

The thrill of killing you| BAU x unsub reader
Tumblr media
Warnings: 18+ MDNI. This contains mentions of SA and CSA. It is not graphic detail at all but please do not read if that is something that triggers you. Mention of weapons. Murder (not graphic detail at all again). Also I hope this all flows and makes sense, I’ve read over and over again so it kinda of feels like it doesn’t make sense.
Summary: this is both from your POV and Hotchners POV. This is present day, and the BAU are catching on to there been a serial killer.
Chapter two: Death of a party
Your POV:
You hadn’t been caught so far; you were safe for now. You left no DNA, you changed your location, you didn’t kill in the same state for at least a year. You hadn’t changed a lot since your first kill, accept you now never left letters, you couldn’t have a signature, you couldn’t let anyone knew that you existed.

Sometimes, when you were just doing your day-to-day activities, you would look at someone and wonder if they were a rapist, a murderer, or someone just as bad. That’s when you would think of all the people you had killed, and what they had done. Then you would think about the people who were still alive and whether they were like those people.

You had a strict moral code, but you did what you did to protect others, it was the only thing you were certain of. It was the only thing you had be certain of for a while.

‘The moral code I follow is simple, it is this:
I will not kill unless I know for a fact the target is a rapist.
I will kill rapists, even if they are not in my area.
I will kill serial rapists/child molesters/abusers/human traffickers.
I will not kill anyone who does not deserve it.
I will not get caught.’

And while you had this moral code, you still enjoyed the rush your kills brought.

You were doing what the police should be doing, but you found out a long time ago that the police, especially the FBI, do not care about abusers they only cared about murderers. They only cared when it resulted in someone’s death. The people you killed had to die, that was the only way the people they had hurt would get any justice. You knew it was only you who could make the difference. You had committed yourself to this. You had no choice.

See, when the FBI did go after a criminal, they used profiling, or to put it in a better perspective, guess work. They would use the minimal evidence they had and find someone who fit the profile. You though, you had information you had names, you had the faces of abusive. You did research, you made sure the person you were about to kill was guilty.
You just wished that you could have hunted all abusers, but unless you were part of a team that would be nearly impossible.
You were not going to get caught, you knew that. You made sure all evidence was covered up, you made sure all your bases were covered. You did your research, and you knew that you were safe.

You read about a story of a man who was a rapist, not as bad as some of the others you had killed, but he still did it. His name was John Andrew Hamm, he was a teacher and would give his students alcohol or drugs and then rape them. He was a sick bastard. He had been abusing since the eighties. He was arrested numerous times, but his charges were dropped every time, the main reason was because his victims were too afraid to speak up. They were his students, and with the influence he had on the school board he was protected. He was a monster.

You knew everything about him now, his routine. He was, apart from been a monster, a simple man. While he had a lot of influence, and he was well known, he had no friends, he was not married, and he had no children of his own. He lived by himself, he never had anyone over, and he never went out. God, you almost felt sad for him, but then you remembered everything else about him.

*Ten years ago, *

You only talked Dutch at home now, your mom refused to speak English and she didn’t dare to talk Swedish anymore. It had been seven years since your mom and dad divorced, and they had a good co-parenting relationship. You often stayed weekends with your dad, which your mom with fine. But then once you turned 18 your mom refused you to see your dad.

“Ik wil niet dat je, je vader nog ziet. Hij is niet de persoon die je denkt dat hij is.”
I don’t want you seeing your dad anymore. He is not the person you think he is.

“Mam, ik begrijp het niet. Tot nu toe vond je het goed dat ik hem zag. Nu ik volwassen ben, wil je niet meer dat ik hem zie. Dat is niet logisch.”
Mom, I don’t understand. You were okay with me seeing him, until now. But now I’m adult, you don’t want me to see him anymore. That doesn’t make sense.

And every time you brought up your dad, she would basically say the same stuff. It had been a year of her saying; he just isn’t the person you think he is. You were sick of hearing it, why couldn’t she just say who he truly was.

You knew if you truly wanted to find out who he was then you were going to have to find out all by yourself. Which was going to be hard as seen as your mom wouldn’t say anything, and you knew your dad wouldn’t.

*Present day*

You waited for Mr Hamm to start his typically Saturday routine. Which was going to his local grocery store to do his weekly shopping.

As you followed him around the store, you couldn't help but feel disgusted by his presence. You watched him as he mindlessly placed items in his cart, completely unaware of the fate that awaited him.

You had planned this for weeks, meticulously going over every detail to ensure that there was no way you could get caught.

As you followed him out of the store, you made sure to keep a safe distance. You didn't want to give him any indication that you were following him.

He walked down the street and into his car, not noticing you following behind. You waited until he drove off before starting your own car. You had already prepared everything you needed in your trunk, including the tools necessary to carry out your plan.

You followed him for another ten minutes, watching as he turned into his driveway. You parked a few houses down, making sure that your car was hidden from view. This was the moment you had been waiting for.

You stepped out of your car and walked towards his house. He was taking his food in to his house. You took a breath; you had planned this, and it wasn’t your first time.

“Erm, excuse me.” You said in a low tone, it was loud enough for him to hear you. He slowly turned around, his face was neutral, no smile, no nothing really. If you didn’t know what you knew about him you wouldn’t have been able to guess, not from just looking at him.

“Are you okay?” he said in an almost friendly tone. His voice suited his looks, but not his personality.

“Yes. Yes, I am. I’m new to the area, I was wondering if you knew the woods are good to hunt it?” His neutral face had contoured into one of a happy face. His brown eyes were looking you up and down. He was trying to get a feel of you. You felt like he was undressing you with his eyes.

“They are. I can show you some of the best areas if you want?” Man, that was just a friendly gestured. If you weren’t genuinely asking for help you would have fallen for his trap.

“If you don’t mind, I would love. I’ve got my gun in my car. I’ll go grab it” You wanted to let him know you were armed.

He nods his head, not suspecting a thing. As you make your way back to your car, you feel the adrenaline pumping through your veins. You know what you have to do, and you're ready to do it. You grab your weapon and make your way back to his house.

He's waiting outside for you when you arrive, smiling as he takes you deeper into the woods. You keep your guard up, knowing that he's still dangerous despite his friendly demeanour. You follow him for a few minutes before stopping in a clearing.

"This is one of my favourite spots," he says, gesturing to the trees around you. "You should be able to find some good game here."

You nod, pretending to be interested in his hobby. You keep your eyes on him, waiting for the right moment. It comes when he turns his back to you, looking out into the woods.

You raise your weapon take aim at him.
“What’s good game to you Mr Hamm? School girls? The students you teach?” He looks at you, shocked you knew his name and what type of person he was. His friendly, happy demeanour had gone. His face was now full of fear.

“How do you know my name? Why are you saying such terrible stuff about me?” Oh god, did he really think this was going to work on you. You weren’t new to the game.

“Shut up. Let me talk, you hold no power here. Don’t lie to me, I know everything about you. If you were smart, which you really aren’t, I’d start praying now. Because you won’t be able to soon.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about. I’ve never done anything wrong.” You sigh, this guy is such a terrible liar.

“Oh, but you have. You’ve done so much wrong. Do you know how many victims you have?” He looks down, nervously shaking his head. You smirk. This was too easy. He had no game; he had no plan. He was nothing.

“You have 17 victims. I know that for a fact. I’ve seen the proof.” He looks at you in disbelief.

Aaron Hotchner POV

The BAU had been called in for a case, one happening in a small town in Montana. The police chief that had called us in had a hunch, he said we didn’t have to take the case, but he would like us to look over the case files.

I called the team in and gathered them around the round table, I didn’t want Garcia to present this one as she didn’t have all the information. I looked at everyone around the table, I knew if we did take on this case it would be a hard one. The person who had been killed was an apparent rapist, it wasn’t for me to comment on whether he deserved to die but it was on us to find out who killed him.

“Okay guys. This case is different. I mean we have had ones like this before, but there is only one apparent body at this time. A body of a man called Mr Hamm has been found in Lewistown, Montana. He has been accused of some crimes, and the police believe this was a vigilante kill”.

The team nodded in agreement, knowing what this case would entail. I continued, "This is going to be a tough one. We need to find out who did this and bring them to justice. We don't condone vigilante justice; it only leads to chaos."

We all got to work, looking through the files and interviewing the people in the small town. It was clear that there was a lot of tension between the locals and Mr Hamm, who had a history of sexual assault. But it was also clear that the locals were protecting whoever had killed him.

As the days passed, we started to get some leads. We discovered that Mr Hamm had been in a relationship with a woman named Rachel. She had suffered at the hands of Mr Hamm and had been seeking revenge. It was plausible that she had killed him, but we needed concrete evidence.

We decided to bring Rachel in for questioning. As we were driving to her house, I couldn't shake off the feeling that something wasn't right. There was multiple people in this town who could have killed, who had a motive to do this. But his body was clothed, he wasn’t tortured. It was a quick and simple kill.

I got a call from Garcia;

“Hey sir, I’ve been doing some research, and this is the fifth kill in Montana over the past five years. I mean there has been more murders, but I mean of this kind. A man murdered in some woods, but the man has been accused of crimes but never convicted. I think there is a connection.”

“Well, I mean there could just be a lot of vigilante murderers happening. This isn’t just a hunch is it Garcia, you’re better than this.”

“No, it’s not. They all are killed by a similar gun, and nothing else is done to them other than been killed.”

“I’m sure there is more than just five accused rapists in Montana, and a year is a long cooling off period.”

“Well, I’ve been looking across the entire US and, in every state, apart from Alaska, there are these kinds of murders happening for the past five years. I mean in Ohio there have been a few more. But I think, I think there is a connection here I just can’t see it.”

As Garcia spoke, my mind was racing. This was not just a simple case of vigilante justice; this was a serial killer. A serial killer who had been operating for five years and had somehow managed to avoid detection. I knew then that this was going to be the toughest case we had ever worked on.

We arrived at Rachel's house, and she willingly came with us to the station. As we questioned her, I could see the fear in her eyes. She denied any involvement in the murder of Mr Hamm, but I could tell she was hiding something. We needed to find out what that was.

As we continued to investigate, we discovered that there were other suspects in the small town. People who had a motive to kill Mr Hamm and had the opportunity to do so. It was becoming clear that this case was not going to be solved easily. We were going to have to dig deep and work hard to solve it.

Days turned into weeks, and we were no closer. We had to go back to Quantico as there was other serial killers to catch but I knew everyone had been keeping an eye on this case, especially Garcia.

alastor
« why'd i do tha'? well, cher, it was funny, i'm an asshole, and i don' like ya! »
Tumblr media
Name: Alastor Theodore LeBlanc
Nicknames: Al (by Charlie and Naomi), Dollface (by Antonio), Bambi (by everyone)
Height: 172cm (5'8)
Age: 33
Birthday: November 10 19XX
From: New Orleans, Louisiana
Nationality: Louisiana Arcadian (Cajun)
Languages: English, Cajun French which he pretends he's better at than he actually is (mostly knows pet names and threats/insults) (speaks with a heavy Yat accent)
Gender: Male (Intersex, Classic CAH)
Pronouns: Refers to himself with He/Him but does not care what others call him (he finds it amusing when people misgender him)
Sexuality: Cupioaroace
Partner: Antonio (Queerplatonic)
Famous For: True Crime Podcaster, Blogger and Interviewer for VOXfeed Unsolved
Plays: Alastor 'the Radio Demon'
Trivia:
originally, his character was named Andrew 'the Radio Demon' but he kept forgetting that he was supposed to answer to that name, and Blitzø thought 'Alastor' sounded more edgy anyway so they changed it to make it easier for him
his natural accent was considered too strong and 'too friendly sounding' so he learnt himself a transatlantic accent for the role. he tried to learn a queen's english accent and got absolutely obliterated for his horrible attempt by the brits in the cast
he loves fucking around with gender stereotypes and gender expression. he sometimes dabbles in drag which started purely as him being drawn to the showmanship of it but he found he actually enjoyed fucking around with his gender
he once dressed up in drag for an after party celebration and convinced a drunk oxley he was a new cast member for next season until he messed up and accidentally revealed himself. oxley didn't talk to him for a week after that
his hair is dyed red and naturally curly (a mix of 3A, 3B and some strands of 3C) which he gets from his mother. seeing his curls reminds him of her which makes him sad, so he straightens his hair most of the time to avoid getting upset. he still avoids looking in the mirror regardless though
has a soft spot for younger women (sees them as the little sister he always wanted) and thus is happy to cosplay with naomi and let victoria give him a makeover every now and then (and lecture him for his lack of hair care routine because "seriously, alastor, what the fuck do you mean you've been straightening your hair for two decades without any sort of care or routine?")
he is autistic and has adhd. he was prescribed adderall for his adhd but he never remembers to take it. he also has c-ptsd.
he was attacked by a neighbour's dog when he was 19 that left him with permanent nerve damage and a limp in his left leg. he sometimes uses a cane to help which is where his character got his microphone stand from. he's terrified of oxley's service dog because of what happened but he doesn't tell oxley because he doesn't want him to feel bad for needing an aid (the same way he uses a cane for aid)
he has freckles that he hides with makeup after lucas said he 'looks like a baby deer' which resulted in everyone giving him the nickname 'bambi' (which he pretends to hate but actually quite enjoys)
everyone finds him a bit creepy. one of his special interests is animal bones and taxidermy and he makes no effort to hide it from the others. he often gifts them little taxidermies or fossils or bones and often jokes that "y'all shouldn't be askin' wha' that is! y'all should be askin' who it is!"
fans think he's 'method acting' to play the role but the other cast members point out that "he's not method acting, that's just how he is. he's just. like that."
he isn't a serial killer or a cannibal but he loves to make jokes and leave hints that he is. he makes little snide comments that come across like he very much is a serial killer. the others can't tell if he's serious or not about it which he finds hilarious
he will do just about anything if he finds it funny enough. he thrives on fun and entertainment for himself. people are wary of him because he's known to be a prankster
despite his character, he doesn't smile that much off set. he's self-conscious of his smile and tends to reserve it only for antonio's eyes. he often complains about being cast as a character who smiles all the time (well, he complains about everything. he's a major complainer and everyone finds it hilarious and he would rather drop dead than admit to being whiny)
he's a huge fan of astrology because of antonio. he also got into tarot reading because a distant relative gifted him a tarot deck that definitely wasn't a regift one year. he enjoys doing readings for the others even if it's hard to resist messing with them (it's one of the few things he takes seriously)

weirdass lesbian polycule b/w julia, reader, and ashley because as alfred pennyworth said: "some men just want to watcu the world burn"
if you can't do it then tis fine ^^
The forbidden prequel to the Yuri Square, the Lesbian Triangle of Doom
Tumblr media
Julia x Ashley x Fem!Reader
Truly, your taste in women is enough to give someone whiplash
Looking at one of your girlfriends, it’s crystal clear why you love her to passersby
She’s soft spoken, polite, positively adorable- no doubt about it. Overall a wonderful woman
Meanwhile- your other girlfriend is a BPD nightmare
Ashley is loud, brash, acts first and doesn’t really dwell on the potential consequences- not to mention her….”insightful” personality
Though she doesn’t take kindly to the questions people have about your relationship
The comments can make her a bit insecure though- worried that you like Julia, or prefer her cause she’s “low-maintenance”
It couldn’t be further from the truth however
You love both your girlfriends
No matter how drastic their personalities are
Ashley clung to your arm, glaring daggers at the man Julia was profusely apologizing to for her outburst. A small altercation- mishearing a conversation you were having with him, believing he was speaking ill of her. So naturally she chewed him out….very publically you may add.
The three of you had decided on a nice walk, enjoy the scenery the best your miserable world would allow, but faith had other plans. And those plans involved calling a man more swears than you realized there were in the English dictionary.
Ashley grumbled, tightening her grip on your arm. You should be mad, should be reprimanding her for such an act but…
Goddammit she was cute.
Her cheek was pressed against your arm, squishing against it a little as she gave a disgruntled look towards the man- almost trying to intimidate him from where the two of you were standing. It was so cute, like an angry cat.
You couldn’t help but smile, running your hand through her hair to try and help soothe her. She initially flinched under your touch before accepting the affection. The scowl never completely left her face…but it definitely improved a little.
Julia rushed back over to the two of you, looking slightly less worried than she did earlier, “Okay! Good news!” She beamed, “The guy agreed not to sue us for Ashley calling his dead wife a maggot-infested, dead pig!”
“Hurray!” You raised the arm not occupied by your girlfriend in victory.
Ashley grimaced, but truth be told, she was a bit relieved to avoid trouble once again, “…wooooooo.”
Julia joined your other side, and you lowered your hand for her to take. Her approach was a lot gentler than Ashley’s, instead opting to gently take your hand into hers. She gave your hand a small squeeze before the three of you continued on your walk, chatting aimlessly with Julia while Ashley quietly listened- the scowl gradually disappearing in place of a small smile.
How the three of you ended up in this relationship is- beyond your understanding
Originally it was just you and Julia, having gotten together with a good while after her break up with Andrew
Though you’d been acquainted with her before then
You’d been aware of the dumpster fire that was her previous relationship, how she was harassed by Andrew’s sister into calling things off with him
And even then he was a flake with strange priorities
She only ever gave Andrew’s name, never once mentioning his sister’s
So it was a surprise to everyone when you learned that Ashley was the same one who previously harassed your girlfriend
You’d run into Ashley once while buying groceries, and you just kept bumping into it- strangely enough
Though she was fun to talk to, so you didn’t question how this woman just kept showing up wherever you went
Seems she found you to be fun as well
She made her advances pretty clear, even after you told her you had a girlfriend
You’ve had to reprimand her on personal space a lot during that initial friendship period
To make things worse for your conscious, you slowly caught feelings to
You talked with Julia about it, you’d told her about a new friend you made prior to this
It was a long talk, trying to figure out how to move forward and- explain your feelings
You still loved Julia- by gods you loved Julia. How could you not? She was just so sweet and beautiful and understanding and way too good for this shitty world
But what you chalked up to just- initial physical attraction to Ashley blossomed into something more complex
By the end of the talk, Julia wanted to meet Ashley. Get to know her before moving forward with any type of polygamous relationship
You’d all have dinner! Meeting up at your apartment and chatting on the way
….things couldn’t have gone more south.
You stood awkwardly between the two women, fidgeting with your hands nervously. Julia was partly hidden behind you while Ashley was standing in the doorway, scowling.
When she had arrived, both had very different reactions to the others; neither good. Julia went pale, looking like she saw a ghost, while Ashley had a scowl that was ice cold. No one had said anything, but just from the context clues…things didn’t look well.
Julia peered at Ashley from around your body, trembling. It was subtle, but given how close she was you could tell.
Ashley’s expression changed on a millisecond, sickeningly sweet as she grinned, “Well! Isn’t this such a small world..” you could feel the malice behind her voice.
“I…take it you two have already met?” You didn’t really know what to say in this moment.
Julia nodded, Ashley stepped closer.
“Awwww, what’s wrong Julia? I don’t bite~” She cocked her head to the side, trying to peer at Julia from her hiding spot, “Don’t you know it’s rude to ignore your guests?”
You turned to look back at Julia, she glanced back at you and then at the ground.
“Ashley is…Andrew’s sister…” she mumbled. It was the smallest bit of information, but it was enough for you to connect the dots.
Andrew’s sister harassed Julia. And unless he has another sister, then that means Ashley…
“Tattletale.” Ashley grumbled, crossing her arms, “Come onnn, I wasn’t being serious.”
“You told me to slit my wrists proper.”
Ashley made a few motions on her wrist with her finger, “Across the street for attention, down the street for results.”
Julia pulled up her sleeves instinctively. And well- you just about had enough.
“Okay, yeah- that’s it.” You pinched the bridge of your nose, “You’re gone.”
“What?”
“What?!”
Ashley looked shocked to say the least, eyes wide. She then narrowed her eyes, looking very angry.
“What do you mean ‘I’m gone’?!”
“I mean you’re gone,” you stood your ground, “You harassed and threatened my girlfriend.”
“I didn’t even threaten her!” Ashley claimed, balling her fists up in frustration. Her nails dug into her palms a little.
“You kinda did…” Julia pointed out, quietly…but she pointed it out.
“Bullshit!” Ashley’s voice caused Julia to flinch back in response, “And you’re not even dating Andrew anymore, so obviously I won’t do it again.”
“How do I know you won’t try to get me to break up with Y/N?…” your girlfriend pointed out again, holding on to your arm for moral support as she stood up for herself, “She told me you like her…”
“Tattletale for Tattletale I guess..” Ashley muttered.
“You didn’t answer the question.” Your voice was firm, leaving no one to question if you meant what you said or not, “I don’t want to be friends with you if you’re going to talk like that to Julia.”
Your statement seemed to have actually gotten a response out of Ashley. Wide eyes at the fear of losing you. She furrowed her brow and directed her pink gaze to the floor, thoughts swirling behind her eyes as she thought about this. You used this moment to silently console Julia, taking her hand into yours and kissing her forehead.
“Alright.” Ashley’s voice caused both of you to jump. Not cause it was angry, just cause she hadn’t spoken for a while.”
You tilted your head, “Alright?”
“Alright,” She crossed her arms once again, looking away, “I’ll behave. I won’t mess with Julia again.”
That was….surprisingly easy. Almost made you question the validity of her words. But further observation told your differently. Ashley was hard to read, yes- but she gave no indication that she was lying. She was looking directly at you, her expression not nervous or anything. In fact it didn’t look much of anything. You didn’t know what to make of it, so you turned to Julia.
Julia had also been studying Ashley. She let go of your arm, feeling a bit more confident in her words, “Why’d you change your mind all of a sudden? I thought you hated me?”
“I never hated you…” Ashley mumbled, “I just- didn’t want you dating my brother.” It felt like she had more to say on that, but she moved on, “And I don’t want to lose Y/N so…” she shrugged, “I won’t ‘threaten’ you.”
“The air quotes don’t make me very confident…”
You rescheduled lunch. You wanted to see if Ashley would make good on her promise to not harass Julia
And surprising both of you, she did.
It was like she was….actually making an effort to be nice to Julia when you all hung out
The two even talked on their own merit, sometimes!
After learning what Ashley had done, it took you a while to reconsider your feelings.
Even if they were still there, which they were, did you even want to date the woman who hurt your girlfriend
Julia had to give you the okay, when she was ready of course. She took longer to come to terms with Ashley than you did
You all had that lunch, and had the conversation you wanted to have originally
Is this the healthiest relationship? No
Ashley still has her moments, and has to be reminded a lot of what she promised
But, you’re willing to brave those storms
Because the outcome is….peaceful. Surprisingly.
Maybe you can convince both of your girlfriends to get therapy so things can be peaceful more often…

Using "Sibling Title" in Romantic Relationship Is NOT Incest
You know, interacting with majorly English community about Asian media made me realize that English doesn't have any "sibling title", something that was so common in Asia (and perhaps other continent too cmiiw), thus I noticed some of them have a little difficulty on perceiving what "sibling title" actually meant. Combined with shipping war and incest allegory, many misunderstanding are created. Somehow yesterday I happen to stumble upon two of them in almost the same moment so I wanna make this post to vent my frustration.
First is this :
Tumblr media
The segment that they meant is when Kota called Izuku "nii-chan" and Ochako "nee-chan" after Ochako's speech.
Tumblr media
Yes, Kota called Izuku "Big Brother" and Ochako with "Big Sister". But really, even the translator clearly explained in their translation that "nii-chan" and "nee-chan" are not only title for older siblings but also title/name for a young teen or 20-ish boy/girl (overall people still in youth). Other people on twitter (X who?) pointed out that Kota means those title in relation to him and not to Izuku-Ochako, which is true, Kota may think of Izuku and Ochako as his big brother and sister at that situation. But even if he's not, he will still use "nii-chan" and "nee-chan" titles toward Izuku and Ochako because that's the title that was correct from person on Kota's age to people on Izuku/Ochako's age. Of course, that doesn't mean Izuku and Ochako are bounded by sibling/familial relationship in any form.
For example, this is a "7 years old" kid Conan ("a young boy" in disguise, for complicated reason) called 18 years old Heiji and Kazuha with "nii-chan" and "nee-chan" while at the same time helping them to hook up. He didn't really think of them as his brother/sister like in personal level, but he still used "sibling title" because that was the appropriate ethic for him.
Tumblr media
Next is the example in broader sense, but the point is still because they are "brothers", there's no way Gilgamesh and Enkidu have romantic relationship.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
let's pretend it's not completely bizarre to input arabic perception on a story with a language that way predates arabic, with different time, culture, and setting. Let's use arabic now. Brother in Arabic is "akhi", derived from Akkadian "ahu", the language that was used on 12 tablet Epic of Gilgamesh standard version ("Ses" is Hittite/Sumerian version).
This is the excerpt from Epic tablet by Andrew George, when the word "ahu" is used to described Gilgamesh and Enkidu :
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The thing is, "ahu" may meant brotherhood, but they don't necessarily mean bounded by familial forbid-to-marry relationship. The word "ahu" can mean brother of same social standing, close male associate, or the proof of companionship, for example King Tushratta used "brother" (ahu in akkadian, shesh in sumerian) to Pharaoh Egypt which they have brother-kingdom relationship. Of course they are not "family" with each other and their family can marry each other.
Even if, as the commenter said, translated into arabic, "akhi" is not meant for strictly brotherly relationship. The word itself means "brother, close male friend, male associate". In fact, there's webtoon in my country (Muslim majority) that has female lead called her love interest "akhi". And this is her pray so God can make her meet her "akhi".
Tumblr media
Translation : "There has been 6 years passed but I still haven't meet "akhi". Please God lead him to be close to me"
Of course when the female lead called her crush "akhi" she doesn't mean that there's familial feeling from her to him that prevent her for wanting to marry "akhi". And readers from my country completely expect her to still call her husband "akhi" even after marriage.
Those "sibling title" are not and never strictly platonic. Those are title for almost-familial-but-not-really attachment, usually to emphasis social construct. It just, I don't know the exact term but I call it "polite endearment title". When it comes to romantic relationship/marriage, even with "sibling title" there will be no incest feeling involved as long as the couple are not bounded by blood of close family, share the same mother's milk/wetnurse, nor raised together from before puberty (the latter may depend on situation).
P.S : I wonder, do English users find it weird if we Asian use the exact same title for sibling and for romantic partner? Like, you guys know that Korean fangirls called their idols that they want to date/marry as "oppas" in the same word as they call their "oppa" in home, right? I am Javanese, I call my blood-brother "mas", and I expect to use that word for my husband too, like my sister who called her husband "mas" even though she's older than him.

(spoilers?!)
⋆。° ✮ Okay, I just wish people would stop watching TCOAL like "incest game lol." Dude, incest is the least of the problems when we're talking about manipulation, physical and psychological abuse (especially in chapter one), neglect, emotional dependence and lack of responsibilities. Incest is not romanticized in the burial route because it is a fetish of the creator, but rather because it is intepnded to make whoever is watching it completely uncomfortable. And this is for everyone, even because even people who support the game's incestuous relationship will be uncomfortable or a little upset watching the Decay route.
Again, incest is the least of the problems, but people make an extreme fuss about it. Both people who like it, and people who hate the game for that reason, as if it were just about that. But unfortunately, works like this always receive criticism from the public even if they are very well written. "Presença de Anita" (Presence of Anita),It is a 2001 television miniseries based on the 1948 novel of the same name by Mário Donato going through the same problem :It has good writing on topics considered "taboo" and inappropriate, but it makes the mistake of thinking that the public will have a reflection on it,because the public is divided between criticizing or sexualizing the work. I could also mention the book "Lolita" but I think I'm exaggerating, or maybe not.
Tumblr media
⋆。° ✮ There's only one thing I love more than anything about this game, Andrew. I love Andrew, I love him so fucking much it wouldn't matter if he put his pale hands on my neck and choke me without thinking twice he's so adorable my god I just want to hug him. Did I mention he's adorable? But I'm realistic, he's just as bad as Ashley, sometimes being a little worse than her. He's like Michael Afton: two good protagonists, flawed's, bad in many ways, smokers, problematics and with VERY good development. Andrew is not saint, he stopped being innocent when he killed the guard to save Ashley. He was manipulated and mentally abused by Ashley and Neglected by his parents. He often allows himself to be manipulated, he also doesn't know how to say "no" to his sister (As a person who had emotional dependence for two years, I understand his side but fr...).
Unlike Ashley, who apparently has been like this since childhood, Andrew gradually broke down. He wasn't rotten, he grew older with time, day after day, and that's what makes him sooo likable. He went from manipulated victim to a criminal, Even though I'm a horrible person Is he still kinda Nice? His development is great in both routes, in the Decay route his mental breakdown is great! And at burial he finally admits his mistakes. (Also Me, him and Julia are a threesome <3 joke)
Tumblr media
⋆。° ✮ I often say that unprepared parents create traumatized children and this game is proof of that. Okay, I think I've said everything I had to say. There was also a YouTuber who made a video explaining more precisely what I wanted to talk about, in addition to a Brazilian video talking about Presence of Anita that I commented on earlier,If you are willing to see it, feel free . And sorry for the bad english :P
☆゚° ⚰️ ୨ tcoal deserves better
☆゚° 🇧🇷 ୨ Anita's presence
꒰ Thanks for reading =D ↷ ⋯

if you're worried about repetitive sentence starters in narrative writing (ie: frequently starting with "I" or a pov character's name), i think the most important thing to focus on is not the kind of words you're using, but rather the moving parts in your story that are being highlighted.
english is best suited for a subject (I) - verb (wrote) - object (this) sentence structure; that's the format that the reader will inhale without noticing, easy as breathing. it's also the easiest for you to write (hence, your draft full of sentences starting with pronouns). for a lot of the delivery of your story, you should be in that "stealth mode" so that the lines you want noticed can really leap off the page in comparison. messing with the subject-verb-object pattern signals to the reader that there's something to notice, and writing is awkward when it's full of sentences that say, "look at me!"
if you're worried about variation of sentence starters, you want to zoom out on the narrative and think about the scene you are trying to show, or the point you are trying to make. let's do an example from my own writing:
That’s not all true. Baz had already mapped out the best regular flights from Heathrow to LAX. He was talking about weekend trips in the middle and FaceTime date ideas he’d found on Pinterest. It filled Simon with dread. Baz wasn’t taking any of it seriously. As silly as the role was, everyone knew Bad Blood was going to be huge. Baz was the exciting, fresh face joining a star-studded cast for the most audience-friendly teen vampire show in history. Simon wasn’t going to let him blow it.
all the blue sentences follow, in general, that subject-verb-object pattern. the pink sentence is the outlier, and it's also the most significant line in the paragraph; in this story, this is the moment where you finally learn simon's motivation for previously breaking up with baz. the rest of the sentences all start with a noun, but they're different nouns based on what needs to be said.
here's another way this could be written:
Simon knows that's not all true. He'd watched Baz map out the best regular flights from Heathrow to LA and look up FaceTime date ideas. Simon worried that Baz wasn't taking it seriously. He knew Bad Blood would be huge, despite the concept being silly. But Simon knew Baz was the exciting, fresh face joining a star-studded cast for the most audience-friendly, sexy teen vampire show in history. Simon wasn't going to let him blow it.
this probably looks more similar to the kind of paragraph people get nervous about. simon simon simon -- like, stfu man! what's really happening is just that simon is not the best subject for all of these sentences. it's true that "simon knows" and "simon watched" and "simon knew," but we already know all that, because we know we're in his head. when you look at paragraphs like these, you want to identify the true subject of your sentences. even in the most introspective of paragraphs (like the above example), the narrator is usually not the Most Important Noun.
let's do one more example for when you're writing really menial tasks -- this is where i most commonly have this problem:
Andrew turns on the TV, puts the volume almost all the way down, and crouches in front of the DVD collection. His fingers trail along the spines for a moment before he pulls a case from the shelf. The player swallows the disc as Andrew crosses the room to turn out the lights. Tinged blue in the shadows, he comes to stand in front of Neil again, hand extended in demand.
so, same thing: the subjects, the nouns taking action, are andrew, his fingers, the dvd player, and then andrew again with a modifier. the first time i wrote this, i'm sure "andrew" or "he" was the start of every sentence, because my man is just doing his lil task here and sometimes that's not the most exciting thing to write. but again: it's not all about him! other nouns deserve the spotlight. the last sentence breaks the pattern, but it's also the completion of the task: he has successfully set the movie-watching scene, and this sentence is transitioning us to them watching the movie.
there's lots of ways to write and i definitely don't have all the answers, but i do think that any writing advice that asks you to focus on mechanics rather than structure will ultimately not help you solve the root of bad writing habits. when i write, i'm thinking: what's the main player noun in the action taking place? that's what becomes the subject of my sentence, so my starters are naturally a lot more varied. it's less intimidating to think about the purpose of your story (which you're already excited about!) when you're writing than it is to put that focus on mechanics.
good luck! you've got this!!

Laurent: the bright one, shining one
Leighton: leek town (lol)
Minamoto: source, origin

Note: The Chinese names included aren't really "old money" because we don't really associate names with money or position. The younger generation of Asian people usually have English names as well Chinese ones (instead of a romanised Chinese name). All Chinese surnames can also be "old money" because lots of people have the same surname.
Side-note: quite a lot of "old-money" kids have joint surnames from both parents, so you could try doing that for your characters
I used Google for a lot of names from cultures I'm not familiar with so I could be very wrong! Please correct me if I’m wrong!!!
QOTD: What’s your main character’s name and why did you choose that name?
AOTD: Mine is Fletcher Cheung, I chose Fletcher because it felt very powerful, and not a lot of girls (especially Chinese girls) have that name so it was memorable.

British presence in the Straits Settlements […] (Penang, Singapore and Melaka) as a whole opened the way […]. Governor Andrew Clarke [...] clearly intended that economic botany should follow the quest for tin. Hardly three months after the [signing of the treaty legitimising British control in Malaya] [...] the Governor pressed Lord Carnarvon, Secretary of State for the Colonies, himself a keen botanist and collector, for the services of a ‘scientific botanist’. [...] Intimate plant knowledge among local [people] [...] assisted the discovery of many [plants valuable to European empire] [...] and the absorption of a number of vernacular names such as kempas (Koompassia), pandan (Pandanus) and nipah (Nypa) into scientific nomenclature. Equally, indigenous names for timbers, pre-eminently meranti and cengal, attained the status of trade names on the international market. Malay knowledge [...] proved also invaluable for commerce and [...] industries.
The Great Exhibition of 1851 at the Crystal Palace in Hyde Park, which displayed representative samples of colonial resources, was a microcosm of empire. Empire [...] co-sponsored the surveying, mapping and inventorying of people, lands and products for the ends of imperial power. Tropical nature, once a source [...] of wonderment, was brought to the domestic market place.
High on the imperial economic agenda were the Malayan territories, the source of gutta percha (from Palaquium gutta). Ingeniously adapted by the Malays [...], the plastic qualities of gutta percha were investigated for medical and industrial use by the [English East India] Company surgeons, T. Mongtomerie (1819-43) and T. Oxley (1846-57). [...] At the same time Oxley successfully pioneered the use of gutta percha for plastering fractures and preserving vaccine, the latter hitherto unable to be kept even for a few days. When a Prussian artillery Officer [...] then perfected its use for insulating telegraph cables, the product immediately gained strategic importance for the empire. Similar adaptations of other indigenous uses of plants paid dividends to industry and agriculture. [...]
---
The emergence of Hevea rubber in the Peninsula, superseding gutta percha as an industrial product was, again, the result of scientific exchange within the close-knit colonial botanical network [...] [following] [t]he illegal exportation by Kew [Royal Botanic Gardens in London] of the seedlings from South America to Ceylon and the Singapore Botanic Gardens [...]. Out of the seedlings sent in 1877 to Singapore, seven were planted by Hugh Low in the Perak Residency Garden. These and those raised in the Botanic Gardens furnished the seeds for the first plantations.
Though an introduced species, indigenous knowledge [...] of a wide variety of gums and exudates [...] benefited the plantation industry.
This [...] scored a major triumph for the colonial plantation industry. [...]
Large areas of Melaka had already been laid to waste by [...] a fast-growing variety of Brazilian cassava introduced in 1886 by Cantley.
The same cultivators soon turned the Imperata grasslands to rubber, but its rapid spread meant that a number of native plant species either became very rare or were entirely exterminated. The wild ancestor of the domestic mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana) is a likely example. [...] During his visit to Singapore in 1854 Wallace identified, within just a square mile, some 700 species of beetles [...].

Hello! A really really hbd to this blog!!!!!!! I saw that you were taking requests so I'd be happy to make one could you do a andrew kriess hc with a s/o who can't speak much english and a fan wujiu hc with a hunter s/o who's an author that likes writing about sensitive themes I apologize if the fan one makes you uncomfortable! And it's my first time requesting so uh yeah im rlly sorry if I said something wrong :sob:
hello and don't worry!! you really cant mess up a request other than not requesting by the rules 😭💓 i can handle such requests but i draw the line at yandere/shady reqs etc. which i already mentioned in the req guide :)
so, expectedly, here's a cw for mentions of h/ng/ng for fan's set of hcs
andrew kreiss with a s/o who can't speak english well hcs🕸
Tumblr media
andrew struggles with his english too, as i hc him as german, so you two are on the same page
might get sad if you get discouraged from speaking it in front of him or somebody else :( when you're talking to him in english you two will be able to work it through, fulfilling each other's gaps of missing informations and mispronounciations
it actually puts him at ease, the fact that he's not alone in this
actually finds it very cute when you mess up a word or get embarrassed while trying to construct a sentence, although he would be very harsh on himself if that happened to him
he'll eventually propose group english lessons in the manor library... kind of like a date of sorts...only if you're up for it c:
when he's writing something for you he'll just substitute english words he doesn't know with german words lol, especially pet names
fan wujiu with a s/o who writes about sensitive themes hcs☂️⚫️
Tumblr media
when he first loomed over you to see what you've been so intensively working on, he didn't expect something like that at all
...aaand he's fine with it, pretty much, but it still worries him a bit
it's common knowledge i hc fan as someone who can't express himself verbally due to his internalized shame, and this situation would be no different - he's worried that writing about such topics impacts your own mental health, and once he realizes he can't act-of-service-out of this one, he'll begin asking you about if you've been feeling well recently, if you've managed to sleep enough and so on
even though you say you've been doing well each time he asks, it doesn't stop you from being on his mind 24/7
if you give him a draft to proof read (although with a warning beforehand) he'll gladly take it and check it for you, always showering you with compliments
if the subject includes h/nging he's going to nope out of it incredibly quickly. it's partially the reason why he never digs through your work on his own, in fear that everything he tried to forget will resurface again

Liturgical Elements: The Embolism
In the liturgical rubrics of the Mass, the "embolism" refers to a short prayer spoken out loud by the priest after the congregation has collectively recited the Lord's Prayer. According to Nicholas Ayo (The Lord's Prayer: A Survey Theological and Literary, page 196), "the embolism functions like a marginal gloss, an explanation of the last line of the Pater, and an unfolding of its many implications." In reformed liturgy of the Roman Church, the English translation of the embolism is as follows:
Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil; graciously grant peace in our days, that, by the help of Your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
In the Tridentine form of the Roman Mass, a longer embolism was recited:
Deliver us, we beseech Thee, O Lord, from all evils past, present, and to come; and by the intercession of the Blessed and glorious ever-Virgin Mary, Mother of God, together with Thy blessed Apostles Peter and Paul and Andrew, and all the saints, mercifully grant peace in our days, that sustained by help of Thy mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all disturbance. Through the same Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Our Lord, who lives and reigns with Thee in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.
The Ambrosian Rite, being another Latin rite, has an embolism that is unsurprisingly similar to the Tridentine one:
Deliver us, we beseech Thee, O Lord, from all evils past, present, and to come; and at the intercession for us of Blessed Mary who brought forth our God and Lord, Jesus Christ; and of Thy holy Apostles Peter and Paul and Andrew, and of blessed Ambrose Thy confessor and bishop, together with all Thy saints, favorably give peace in our days, that assisted by the help of Thy mercy we may be both delivered from sin and safe from all turmoil. Fulfill this by Him with whom Thou livest blessed and reignest God, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, for ever and ever.
The embolism was not only an element of Roman liturgies, either. Take, for example, this embolism used by the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church (notice how the doxology that follows the modern Roman embolism is instead integrated into this one):
Merciful Lord, lover of all mankind, do not let us be overcome by temptation, but deliver us from the rebellious evil one and his perverse and evil ways. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory belong to You and Your Only Son and Your Holy Spirit, now and always and forever.
Here is the embolism of the Syro-Malabar Church, reflecting the Eastern Syriac rather than Western Syriac tradition:
Lord, God Almighty! Fullness of all goodness! Our Merciful Father! We entreat You for Your mercy. Do not lead us into temptation. Deliver us from the evil one and his hosts. For Yours is the kingdom, the might, the power, and the dominion in heaven and earth, now, always, and forever.
In the Greek liturgies, the embolism only survives in the Liturgy of Saint James, which has the following:
Lord, lead us not into temptation, O Lord of hosts! For Thou dost know our frailty; but deliver us from the wicked one, from all his works, from all his assaults and craftiness; through Thy Holy Name, which we call upon to guard us in our loneliness.
On a final note, Fr. Frederick Holweck, the author of the Catholic Encyclopedia's article on the embolism, thought that the Mozarabic embolism in particular was "very beautiful." In addition to being said after the Our Father at Mass, the following prayer was also said after the Our Father in the Mozarabic Church's Morning and Evening prayers:
Delivered from all evil, strengthened forever in good, may we be worthy to serve Thee, our God and Lord: and put an end, O Lord, to our sins; grant joy to them that are afflicted; bestow redemption upon the captives, health upon the sick, and repose to the departed. Grant peace and safety in all our days, shatter the audacity of our enemies, and hearken, O God, to all the prayers of Thy servants, all faithful Christians, upon this day and at all times. Through Our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, ever through all the ages of ages.
