According to the Gospel of Luke, Zechariah got God’s announcement that he and his aged wife, Elizabeth, would have a son whose mission would be to prepare Israel for the coming of the Messiah. That boy was John the Baptist, and now you see the antique Russian icon depicting the scene of the birth of the famous preacher. The curious fact is that the baby was supposed to be named after his father, but Elizabeth objected and stated that his name would be “John.” The original version of the icon dates back to 1475-1500.

Table arrangements for Saint John the Evangelist church in Brigg. I have made 13 table arrangements for the table in the church hall cafe for the Easter Farmers' market in March. Everyone in the church was impressed and spent some time closely looking at the arrangements and discussing them. That was my intention. Creating arrangements, although mini versions, for a physical 'client' is a good practice for an ikebana artist. The real task involves more steps of planning like: 'packaging', 'delivering', 'assembling on site' - it is a different activity compared to an ikebana made in your head or at home.

Hopefully, I will make another set of arrangements for the April market. The next theme is 'Fishes'. I think it is very appropriate for the church.

The featured holy icon was painted in the first half – mid-15th century in the Church of St. George, Novgorod. As you see in the picture, it contains four different scenes, each bearing a religious symbolism important for the correct interpretation of the sacred image. In the icon, there are scenes of the Resurrection of Lazarus, the Holy Trinity, Candlemas, and Saint John the Evangelist Dictating to Prochorus. It is not often that you see works with such a combination of miniature icons at the same time.

Today we celebrate the conception of the Holy Forerunner and Baptist John. For many years, the barren Elizabeth could not conceive a child and after much fervent prayer, their petitions were answered. Once, as the Prophet Zachariah was high priest of the Temple, he entered the Holy of Holies to find an angel standing at the east end of the altar. This was the Archangel Gabriel. The Angel announced that their prayers had been heard by the Lord and that Elizabeth would soon bear a son whose name would be John. Zachariah did not believe the words of the Angel, and for his disbelief, he was made mute until the birth of his son. The Prophet exited the Holy of Holies after an extended period of time, with the faithful waiting for him in the Temple. They sought an answer for his delay and the Prophet signed out to them that he was unable to speak. They understood that he had had a holy vision, leaving him speechless. Nine months later, the Righteous Elizabeth gave birth to the Holy Forerunner and Baptist John, loosing both Zachariah's tongue and Elizabeth's barrenness.
