The Whumps of March 2024: "Hell is empty and all the devils are here." (Shakespeare, The Tempest)
A series of vignettes based on Arthurian legend, collected on AO3 here.
Almost as far back as he could remember, Mordred wanted to become a Knight of the Round Table.
He could he not, with all of his older brothers already in Camelot, lauded as some of the greatest champions in the kingdom? The rare times when they came home, he was regaled with stories of their adventures, and of the glories of King Arthur, Queen Guinevere, and the knight Lancelot, who was Gawain's best friend and Gareth's favorite mentor. Songs of their exploits were find their way to the Orkneys, each one whetting his appetite for adventure.
He spent long hours fantasizing about how it would happen. He would arrive dramatically, during a feast, and his uncle would be so pleased that he would knight him in front of everybody. Or maybe he would sneak in like Gareth, and surprise them all with his hidden mettle. In the end, it was nothing so spectacular—he was sent to the court as Agravaine's squire, and a few years later was knighted alongside several other boys for fighting against a petty rebellion. And he soon realized, sheepishly, that he was not the greatest swordsman or jouster at the court, and that it was hard to be seen as anything but the youngest in a familial set.
It didn't matter. He was now part of the Round Table, renowned as the most valiant and noble knights in Christendom.
It was, perhaps, less rarefied than he had imagined—some of his fellow knights were rude, or boring, or what have you. It was foolish, he supposed, to imagine that they wouldn't be, especially when he had four of them in his family. But he had his friends, Sagramore and Gingalain and Galahad, for a while. More to the point, he had his calling. Defending the needy, upholding the righteous. He would play whatever small part fate demanded in maintaining King Arthur's rule.
He didn't believe the story when he first heard it. The queen and Sir Lancelot? It sounded too much like gossip. A scandalous prospect, outlandish in how little it fit their sterling characters.
Then he saw Lancelot slip into her chambers.
And then Agravaine and eleven others, dead. Mordred himself left unconscious on the floor. Lancelot, the murderer whom he always admired, abandoning his mistress and fleeing like a coward.
"You knew, didn't you?"
Gawain winced, but he didn't answer, didn't even turn toward his brother. Just kept staring into the distance, just like he had since he first heard the news.
Mordred took his brother's shoulder and shook him, roughly. "DIDN'T YOU?!"
"Mordred—!" Sagramore grabbed his arm, but Mordred pulled away, snarling.
"Did you know, too?! That's what I'm hearing! Did everyone in Logres know, except the king and those of us who walked into a slaughter?!"
Everyone was staring at Mordred, but he didn't care. He felt dizzy all of a sudden. He still had a bandage wrapped around his head. The doctor had told him to stay calm, but there was little chance of that happening.
His eyes burning, Mordred pushed past Sagramore and stormed out of the room, leaving the Knights of the Round Table—the same noble heroes who had let this all happen—to gawk at his back.

morgan by william henry margetson and guinevere by eleanor fortescue-brickdale, sir lamorak by howard pyle and sagramore's coat of arms from wikipedia
[ID 1: a picture morgan standing in a stone room. she is holding a wand and appears to be casting a spell, while in her other hand she holds various potion ingredients. next to it is a picture of guinevere with long braids lifting the hem of her dress as she walks through a field. /end ID 1 ID 2: a black and white portrait of a man wearing a tunic and belt. next to it is a yellow and black coat of arms. /end ID 2]
why is morgan so obsessed with guinevere? for a supposed hatred her schemes always seem to be rather lackluster (trying to have the green knight 'scare her to death'?? come on). it's a weird way of flirting but good for them. morgan is just superiors to arthur.
lamorak and sagramore travel together as a sidequest which mostly consists of them flirting with each other.

assigning each straw hat pirate a knight of the round table
because I am currently obsessed both with One Piece and Arthuriana; not any kind of serious AU material, just silliness; I Wrote This for Me but You Can Read If You Like
Luffy: Arthur, not due to any similarities in characterization but purely on the functional level - the boy king, the inspirational leader and, as Sun God Nika, a mythical figure believed to return when people need him the most
Zoro: Lancelot, the perfect warrior who embodies that post that's like "it's not my fault that my love language is acts of service and all I know how to do is kill". There is no Queen Guinevere here, so all the undying devotion is aimed at the king instead. Canonically has massive tits. Mihawk is thus implied to be the Lady of the Lake, and I think that's hilarious
Nami: hear me out: Kay. Sharp-tongued, rather cynical, but loyal to a fault to his king/adopted little brother. Nami as part of the Coward Trio vs. Kay being unlucky on quests and generally the butt of the joke. Isn't known to be a great warrior but occupies an important position (navigator vs. seneschal) that keeps the ship/court going. Besides, looking from the opposite direction, I just think Kay deserves to be the hot girl
Usopp: Usopp, sweetie, I'm so sorry, but I gotta say Tristan. Because Tristan is constantly lying about his identity in the most ridiculous manner possible and it somehow works. That part in Le Morte d'Arthur when he's asked what his name is and goes "Tramtrist" and no one suspects a thing even though "Tramtrist" is just "Tristram" with syllables switched around has big Sniper King energy. Also, can't forget the beautiful blonde healer girlfriend
Sanji: oh, that's the easiest one. Gawain. The Maidens' Knight, the ladies' man, a great warrior and one of the king's closest and most trusted men. If you put together Gawain's characterizations from different texts, from SGATGK to Le Morte to the Vulgate & Post-Vulgate to Chrétien de Troyes to everything, you end up with a contradictory character who is simultaneously the best and the worst guy you'll ever meet, which is how I often feel about Sanji, tbh. Would totally fight at a tournament on behalf of a little girl. Has some kind of an epic gay thing with Lancelot
Chopper: Yvain. Son of a sorceress - ah, pardon, a woman of science; associated with animals; known to be nice and kind (the Vulgate Cycle describes him as the one "whose heart will be filled with every kindness"). Occasionally goes insane in the woods (Monster Point), but, like, who doesn't
Robin: try as I might, I can't pull any direct parallels out of my ass, but I do think that narratively she can be seen as kind of a quasi-Mordred. Since her very childhood she was proclaimed to be bad news and expected to eventually cause a catastrophe, but where Mordred, whom no one tries to persuade the prophecy doesn't define him, ends up becoming exactly what he's expected to become, Robin has people who support her and trust her even after witnessing her be the bad guy in the past, so she never becomes the evil others expect her to turn into
Franky: Sagramore the Desirous (or the Unruly, depending on the text/translation) is a big, strong, good-natured knight who probably has low blood sugar needs to have a snack after fighting because otherwise he'll pass out, much like a certain cyborg needs his cola. In the Post-Vulgate, he and Mordred were raised together, which can be linked to Frobin's fates being intertwined since childhood, because I've Connected the Dots (you didn't connect shit)
Brook: I wanted to pick a character of the older generation who nevertheless isn't a mentor figure to Arthur, and I struggle to think of a better option than Pellinore - not the predatory piece of shit in the medieval texts, but the eccentric but loveable old man in Camelot (1967). Brook is also on a quest focused on an extraordinary beast! Only he's not hunting it, he's trying to get back to it because that beast is his friend 🥺
Jinbei: I honestly don't remember if he counts as the Knight of the Round Table, but I am hereby appointing him Ector - Arthur's adoptive father and one of the nicest parental figures in Arthuriana (and probably one of the nicest people in Arthuriana, period). I've also considered Galehaut for the "(partially) non-human ruler who allies himself with Arthur" angle, but that would imply Jinbei/Zoro and I'm not ready to deal with that.

Iain de Caestecker as Arthur in The Winter King 1x08

Excellent episode, the best so far! Everyone’s acting was on another level - Iain was amazing and it feels like he’s looking hotter and hotter with each episode🔥 the ending was brutal and I’m really curious where everything is going. I know I will suffer because of Arthur and Guinevere but right now I just love them too much to care 😅

At the local grocery store, Sagramore and Olive strolled through the aisles in search of artisanal treats for a charcuterie board. The idea had originated with Olive, but Sagramore eagerly jumped on board, offering to drive and eagerly looking forward to the opportunity to indulge in some delicious snacks. As they perused the shelves, Sagramore's attention was caught when he spotted a particular item. Grabbing it and holding it up, he called out to Olive who was a few steps ahead. "Hey, isn't this the fancy cheese you wouldn't stop talking about?" he asked, a small smile across his face. ( @nctural )

Arthurian characters I believe in my soul are gay
Agravaine: He is just such a gay man whether he’s cis or trans or single or married to Laurel doesn’t matter he loves men end of story
Galehaut: You’d think it’s a given, but Lavinia Collins wrote him straight with sons, so he has to be mentioned and it’s non-negotiable
Bedwyr: He is Kay’s companion, they come as a set, the better half of married couple middle management, nicer of the two but he will support Kay’s antics so tread carefully
Percival: Pronouns irrelevant—they are a big fat gay who turned chivalry into a butch gender
Galahad: Straight people don’t act like that even if they’re Catholic actually especially if they’re Catholic
Sebile: One lesbian to rule them all, I mean, she hit the jackpot with Morgan obviously come on
Kay: See Bedwyr, also the nickname thing just has vibes, why you thinking so much about other men?
Sagramore: He and Agravaine are ex-boyfriends obviously
Gromer: Specifically if we assume the one from Turk and Wedding is the same guy, involvement with Gawain plus invisibility cloak potential is just so fruity
Lionel: Hand to god I can’t think of a time he was associated with a lady I don’t think he even knows knights are supposed to perform feats for them and I’m not going to tell him
Yvain: The marriage to Laudine was a fluke they divorced amicably and he’s living his truth now and that truth? Pet play
Laurel: “Wife” of Agravaine shut up it’s a piece of paper she wouldn’t touch a man with a ten foot pole it’s called lavender marriage sweaty look it up
Lucius: That man wants Arthur so bad it makes him look stupid
Pinel: Yeah the poison apple guy he has the same vibes as Gromer the obsession with Gawain comes with cannotations
Brangaine: She’s not upset Isolde drank the love potion because she was trusted with it, she’s upset they didn’t drink it together
Tor: My friend Tor told me he likes men, hope that clears things up

The Whumps of March 2024: "These Violent Delights Have Violent Ends"
A series of vignettes based on Arthurian legend, collected on AO3 here.
Sagramore moved like a whirlwind, a storm in human form. His blood boiled, rage shot through his veins, and it was intoxicating. The sound of sword clashing on sword was like music to his ears.
By the end he was panting, but grinned as his opponent sat on the ground, Sagramore's sword pressed against his Adam's apple.
The other boy reddened, from embarrassment or exhaustion, but lifted his head haughtily. “I yield.”
“You bet your ass you do.”
He sheathed his blade and walked away, leaving his victim to clamber to his feet behind him.
Sagramore’s foster-brother Mordred had been watching from the sidelines. He stood and casually fell into step beside him, the pair making their way back to the castle.
“You’re too erratic.”
“I won, didn’t I?”
“And you enjoy it far too much. It makes you sloppy. I saw two ways Cadfan could have beaten you, if only he had seen them.”
Sagramore scowled and gave his companion a look. “You’ve never beaten me, either.”
Mordred flashed a rare smile. “Give it time, brother.”
“Right. Maybe the day that Hell freezes—”
And suddenly, the memory ended. He was back on the battlefield of Camlann, gasping as he felt Mordred’s sword piercing all the way through his body.
It didn't hurt as much as he would have expected. More strange than painful. Even stranger was knowing, in a detached sort of way, that it was almost certainly going to kill him.
His old friend stared at him, his eyes weary and hollow.
“I’m sorry,” he murmured. Sagramore could tell that he meant it.
Mordred pulled his sword back out. Somehow, that hurt more than it had going in.
Sagramore fell to his knees, and then face-down into the dirt at Mordred's feet.

Just checked out the first episode of "The Winter King" and really like it so far!!! :D It's a new take on King Arthur based off the book trilogy of the same name with more actual British history tied in as well as some fantasy but it's really fantasy lite so far as in Merlin and the others like him in Avalon have some powers but also mostly visions (similar to ancient Celt pagan culture that ended up becoming Irish, Scottish, and Welsh). There's also the rise of Christianity happening too and it is super violent (which I fastforward through LOL). Then also some twists on characters too like Mordred (who is a baby and actually Uther's son with his wife/queen instead of Morgan/Morgana's), Arthur got exiled and is a warlord before Melin goes to bring him back to save their kingdom, and there's a LOTR style doomed ship of Nimue and Derfel as she'll lose her powers from the gods if she chooses to be with Derfel. Guinevere hasn't shown up yet but seems like it's next week from the description, a few of the roundtable knights are already in the show, and I know Lancelot eventually will be on the show too if it gets renewed as he's in the book series. Looking forward to seeing how the rest of the show is over the next 9 weeks.
