mostly i just meant this, and specifically 3OH!3's most iconic line ever, which is perhaps a life motto for john. which i, again, am pretty sure the great mind @junozeta put in my brain. i have to admit i only know two 3OH!3 songs (the Marina Starstrukk cover), but if you'll allow me to publicly overthink, i do think don't trust me is very much emblematic of one category of "john song." which is not say: upbeat, dated (or has an element of deep nostalgia), has to be enjoyed ironically but is regrettably a banger. (i did put Don't Trust Me on a loop today and i astounded by the bridge all over again. we really put that on the radio!) another example of this type of john song would be fall out boy's entirely perfect church (this one is a pick from em, ty em). basically, we're looking for lyrical relevance, drama, a little emo/goth edge, and a lot of millennial. on another, but similar stream, probably something bon iver adjacent. indie hipster, soft, moody, sad, we're going for self-pity here. and while i would put andrew bird's faithless ghost on a john mix, the indie-hipster john song is not typically an andrew bird fare (for me) (for me, andrew bird is much more up augustine's alley). likewise, while the national hits up the nostalgia, sad, moody, and bonus dad energy checkboxes, i think i'm more likely to give john like, for really lack of a better word, whinier voiced bands (your ajjs, your neutral milk hotels) versus the gravel-voiced melancholies (also augustiney to me). there are exceptions and ofc i don't, lmao, only assign male vocals to john. that would be really wild. but when you're trying to conjure a specific mood... there are some of the touchstones that help me tap into the right energy. but also taylor swift's blank space is a john song, so.
