Someone Like You

Chapter One

July 2006 The makeshift curtain at the community center lifts to a collective awe from the audience of parents and siblings. Two little girls, age seven, are dressed as fairies and sing a song while they shake their wands at the people watching. Ellen and Brian smile and giggle at each other because the girls are so cute. Jaime crosses his arms and looks at his feet, waiting for it to be over.

September 2008 Ellen pressed lunch bags into the girl’s hands and kissed them on the top of their heads. “First day of third grade, how exciting girls! Oh, Claire honey, you have to give this form to your teacher.” Ellen unzipped the backpack and stuck the letter inside. She watched the girls walk to the bus stop talking animatedly and sighed at how fast they were growing up.

November 2008 My dearest Ellen I hope this letter finds you very well indeed. This is short notice, I realize that, but I have taken an assignment in Peru which will keep me away for at least two years. Now that Claire is nine years old I think she is sturdy enough to live with me. If you agree, I will be taking her from your charge right after Hogmanay. Please share your thoughts with me, honest and direct, as you always are. I am so deeply in your debt for providing stability and a home for that tiny girl. I do not wish to impose any further. I anxiously await your response.

January 2009 Two young girls clung to each other at the Edinburgh airport while Lamb and Ellen tried to pull them apart. Lamb was quite upset and shaken by the incident and wondered if he would be a suitable guardian for this little girl. Ellen pulled the girls away and spoke to them about manners and behaving in public. She kissed Claire’s cheeks and encouraged her to go to Lamb.

December 2011 Lamb and his charge walked through the crowded airport looking for baggage. Claire was searching for Jenny in the crowd of people waiting for arrivals. She felt someone yank on her pigtails and turned around to Jaime Fraser laughing. “C’mon dork, they’re over there.” Lamb was at baggage sweating profusely and pulling the only two bags they had between them. He desperately needed whisky and a nap.

December 2012 “I am so grateful to Lamb for sending me back to Scotland for the holidays but I am quite unprepared for the freezing temperatures. I was keeping Jenny awake with my shivering so I grabbed the blanket off the couch and sat on the staircase trying to get warm. I didn’t want to complain. I was so happy to be here, so I shivered in silence. Jaime got up and walked down to the kitchen bringing a plate of food back to his room. He grabbed my arm and pulled me along. I stood in his dark room shivering and not knowing why I was here.

“Get in bed lass.” He handed me a cookie and lit the fire in his room. Then he pulled the blankets up and turned his back on me to sleep. The fire warmed the room and I watched the flames dance me to sleep. I slipped out of Jaime’s room before dawn and went back to Jenny’s bed.

“On the eve of my departure back to Lamb I sat on the stairs trying to avoid waking Jenny. I was freezing of course, and I couldn’t stop crying. I was making myself a nuisance. I hunkered down in the blanket and sniffled until I heard a door open. Jaime walked past me on his midnight raid for food and grabbed my arm again on his way back. This time he gave me a piece of cake, lit the fire, and tucked me in before turning his back. Again, although so grateful, I slipped out of his room before dawn.

December 2014 The house feels warmer this year and I haven’t shivered in my sleep for the past two weeks. Lamb is so kind to send me back year after year. If I didn’t have Lallybroch to look forward to all year I would go insane probably. My skin is itchy from the hayride we went of today. I don’t mind. Jaime sat next to me the whole time so it’s worth it.

December 2016 Uncle Lamb is finally preparing to release his research on the Inca invasion and cultural effect on the indigenous tribes of Peru. He was upbeat and full of energy for the past several months as many archeologists came to our camp to weigh in on his findings. I continued to do my lessons, assist at the dig, and mostly look forward to leaving. I was sure the days grew longer, tortuously so, as the day of our departure neared. This was my last pack out from Peru. Uncle Lamb would deplane in London to arrange our living quarters while I went on to Scotland. I would finally go to a public school in England never to see Machu Picchu again. I was deliriously happy.

It took a day to reach an airport and it was always a crapshoot whether or not the plane would actually show up, or leave as scheduled. I ran to the ladies room and the first large mirror I had seen in a year. How disappointing. I fancied myself prettier now, strikingly beautiful in fact. My reflection mocked me. Where were my long slim limbs, exotic hair, perfect face? I must have stared at my face for an hour when Lamb came crashing into the bathroom making my cheeks burn with embarrassment. I guess the plane showed up and decided to fly us to civilization. I got in line and called Jenny.

As the plane filled slowly I stood in front of the mirror in the lavatory studying my face, my dirty skin and nails, and my torn clothes. Someone pounded on the door until I came out so I sat next to Lamb and waited for my last exit from Peru. Lamb’s face was the color of his field jacket, beige, and he was mopping his sweating face with a towel. He told me to go to sleep and he would see me in the morning. I curled up in my seat and watched him as long as I could before I fell asleep. I had dreams of Lallybroch and running through the fields with Jenny while Jaime sat on the grass with arms crossed looking down. Rupert stood in front of me and pointed at someone behind me. I jerked my head up and saw the worried face of the stewardess, right before big hands hauled me out of my seat and pushed me to the front of the plane. I was snapped into a seat and flight attendants stood next to me the rest of the way to London. People practically ran off the plane and the captain asked who was waiting for me in Scotland. He took my phone and left.

I didn’t see Uncle Lamb get off the plane and I tried to tell the captain he was supposed to get off in London. They weren’t paying attention and I was getting quite upset. The captain pulled me into the cockpit and handed me a phone. I heard Jenny’s da tell me Uncle Lamb had died during the night and I was to continue to Scotland. They would be waiting for me. I looked up at the captain and saw his compassion. The flight attendants stayed beside me and then handed me to the Frasers. I never saw Lamb’s body and for years I would dream he was alive living in the jungle and would call me up one day and say surprise!

When I finally got back to Lallybroch I wasn’t excited anymore, I just felt numb. Sleep would not come for me that first night. I sat on the staircase and huddled against the cold. Jaime got up and raided the refrigerator really late. He mumbled to me as he brought his food to bed and closed his door. The next night the scene was repeated but I was shivering with the chill in the house. When Jaime passed me going back to his room he grabbed my arm and pulled me along.

I stood in his dark room shivering. “Get in bed lass.” He offered me some food and lit the fire in his room. He covered me with the quilt and turned his back to me. I felt every move he made that night. I listened to his rhythmic breathing until the sun came up signaling it was time to leave. I slipped out of his room and curled up in Jenny’s bed.

All of my friends were at the Fraser’s house over the next two weeks and they helped me overlook the dread I was feeling. Namely, what would happen to me now? Where was I supposed to go? Jaime was always with his best friend Ian, Rupert and Angus were there as well. They either stayed in Jaime’s room or dragged him away for the day. The only time I spent any time in the same room with Jaime was Hogmanay and he didn’t speak with me.

The party was fun but my anxiety had become almost unmanageable. Jenny was starting school again in a few days and her parents had said nothing to me about staying with them or enrolling in school. Finally, the day after Hogmanay, Jenny’s parents asked us to come downstairs and talk to them. I waited with my fingers crossed. Ellen Fraser smiled at me and told me what was to happen now.

“What was left of your parent’s estate was invested and protected by your Uncle for all of these years sweetheart. He has stipulated in his will the money is to keep you at a boarding school in Switzerland until you graduate with provisions for food and clothing. On the day of your graduation the remaining assets, and the property in Boston will be transferred to you to use as you wish.”

I was stunned. Switzerland? What did I know about Switzerland, except it was cold? I just stared at Ellen Fraser and said nothing. She seemed so happy that Lamb had planned this so carefully and I would be taken care of. I should be happy too but the tears I felt coming could not be held back. I asked to be excused and ran to Jenny’s room where we tried to piece together what life in a boarding school would be like.

“It willna be so bad, dinna fash yerself, Claire! You’ll meet girls yer age, fancy lasses. You’ll learn to be fancy like them!” She giggled so hard it hit my funny bone and I giggled with her. There was a knock on the door and Jenny opened it to Rupert smiling like an idiot. “What?”

Rupert looked past Jenny and asked, “what er ye lasses laughin about, what’s so funny here?” A large hand came down on Ruper’s shoulder and pulled him away with force. He could be heard protesting the interruption of his courtship.

Jenny closed the door and laughed until she bent over holding her stomach. “Ye could always stay in Scotland and marry Rupert!”

I stared at the door wondering why Jaime wanted to drag Rupert away?

The next two days were filled with shopping at the most extravagant level I had ever been a part of. Ellen took Jenny and me to all the shops armed with a list of necessities the school provided. The list had details right down to how many pajamas, stockings, underwear, outside clothes, party dresses, ball gowns, shoes of every variety, riding wear and boots, loungewear, robes, and coats. It was fun at first and exhausting by the second day. Suitcases were purchased, a day bag for books because backpacks were forbidden. When the list was complete we piled into the car hoping never to shop again so when Ellen pulled into a technology store Jenny and I looked at her confused. An hour later I scrambled into the back seat holding the greatest treasure of my entire life. A laptop computer loaded with all the mandatory software for office skills, drafting, graphic design, illustration, and the best of all, internet browsers. I held it like the treasure it was and couldn’t wait to play around with it.

The following weekend I stood with Jenny at the Edinburgh airport wearing one of my new dresses, shoes, and coat. I shook from head to toe.

“Yer shakin so hard my own teeth are rattlin. Dinna fash, yer goin on an adventure!” Jenny looked at me with such compassion. I didn’t cry nor could I speak from fear of what was next. Both of Jenny’s parents tried to reassure me and I couldn’t speak to them either. I knew when I let go of Jenny’s hand I would be alone with strangers waiting for me in Switzerland and a school full of fancy girls that would hate me. If not for the people in line behind me waiting to board I don’t think I could have convinced my feet to move forward. My mind tortured me with every conceivable terror awaiting me until I felt myself let go. We were landing in Switzerland, my fate was sealed, now I had to live it, and that was that.

Hellboy (2004)

2004′s Hellboy is a strange adaptation of the comic book character in that it's director Guillermo del Toro's vision of Mike Mignola's creation rather than a translation of the story. It's got plenty of style to go along with its wit and it’s a lot of fun.

In 1944, Russian mystic Grigori Rasputin (Karel Roden) helped the Nazis dabble in mystic arts in order to help them win the war. In the process, he brought a young demon to our world. Adopted by Allied forces and raised by Trevor Bruttenholm (John Hurt), "Hellboy" (Ron Perlman) now fights to protect the world from supernatural threats. When Rasputin resurfaces, it’s up to Hellboy, the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense and new recruit John Myers (Ruper Evans) to the incoming apocalypse.

Based on Mike Mignola and John Byrne's Seed of Destruction is a faithful adaptation of the story that doesn't follow it note-for-note. To ease into the story, we follow Myers and he's as bewildered by what he sees as we are.

This is the kind of movie that makes you want to immediately go to the bonus features menu and check out the making of specials. It’s filled with unique creations and cool looking monsters, snippets of wild mythology and crazy characters. Del Toro's penchant for practical effects gives the outlandish adventure roots in reality and it's a lot of fun to just watch. Every time I watch Hellboy, I catch some new detail in the monsters, artifacts or settings.

If the visuals don't steal the show, then Ron Pearlman certainly does. He's perfect in the role, immersing himself fully in the character as he chomps down on cigars and delivers one sarcastic one-liner after another. He’s a badass, the guy you call in to do the job because he might not do it the way you want, or the conventional way, but he’ll get it done. and he loves kittens, how can you say no?

Surrounding him are a slew of other misfits, such as the love interest Liz (Selma Blair) and strange fish-man Abe Sapien (performed by del Toro regular Doug Jones and voiced by David Hyde Pierce). They're so interesting Myers kinda gets left in the dust. Even the villains are crazy. Rasputin as an elder god-worshiping cultist allied with Nazis? Now THAT’S what I call a villain and yet he nearly gets overshadowed by the mysterious Karl Kroenen (Ladislav Beran), a kinda clockwork cyborg who fights like a Sith Lord.

Hellboy doesn't take itself too seriously, often cracking jokes and delivering a bit of darkly humorous irony. It's out there and also feels real. There might be magic and sci-fi tech all over the place but its world feels alive. You can see how characters, places, and events extend past the edges of the screen. It feels like we're getting just a glimpse of something so much bigger and you're excited for more once it's over. This feels like the character's biggest story... so far. You know there's more coming and you're excited about it. Hellboy is a very stylish, exciting popcorn movie. Stick around for the credits to see a fun little extra scene you won’t want to miss. President Macrondescribed that the murdered Teacher who used the Charley Hebdou's cartoon was merely practising the freedom of expression. The cartoon was a creation of the mind. The Chinese artist creation of the Aussie soldier pointin a knife at an Afghan child was based on the facts disclosed by the AUssie army. It was not an imagined piece of artwork. My coclusion that the outburst first by the AUssie PM was because it is the truth. Truth hurts. Outbursts by President Macron and NZ PM suggest to me that they were reacting without thinking or responding to the current US Adnububstratun gameplan to demonise China at ll cost. Their actions show them to be weak in their minds and that it is a group of bullies. I respect the Aussie Denece Minister apologised to the Afgham for the heinous war crimes of the Aussie soldiers against the unarmed Afghan civilians including children. He did it onbehalf of the Army. This morning I heard the AU PM rang the Afghan PM to apologse. Why did he not apologise earlier and through the media as he likes so that everyone knows of his apology? Afghanistan thanked China for airing out this grievous wrong wreaked on her people. How can the young ever respect to adults who behave irrationally, rashly and inconsistently? We should use more of our mind and brain instead of entrusting the thinking to aults wholesale. AU PM wants to be re-elected and thought that by being rough on China like President Trump who could still garner 72 or 73 million votes or possibly more sufficient to be re-elected. Personal gain fpr national interest. The media linked to Ruper Murdoch took up the cudgels to demonisr China . I think Rupert Murdoch has a personal grudge against China. If mymemory is right, I recalled Murdoch made some proposals to China when the latter first opened up but China declined. The media begin to recount on China's huamn rights issue in Xinjiang. South China Sea militarisation and Corvid 19. Please go visit Xinjiang when it is ready to receive tourists; take acrusie to the South China Sea. Indonesia's former President said there is no historical record of China ever invading occupying any country even when China was at its strongest during the Ming Dynasty. Read the travel of Admiral Sheng He to understand the grandeur and might of China then. As for Corvid 19, the Wall Street Journal reported the US CDC that Corvid 19 existed in the US in mid Dec 2019 before the Wuhan outbreak. Apparently, 7000 patients were tested and 106 were tested psotive. The Mayour of New Jersey himself was a patient of flu in Nov 2019 and later found to be a corona virus infection. This explains why President Trump was angry when China decided to carry out an investigation into the virus ground zero. I am disappointed with humanity!

Damn this is a hard question. How can I pick just one? D: Mmmmmh I think the only way I can give you an answer is a short list in no particular order:

The Princess Bride by William Goldman. I love its narrative structure and how exaggerated and heartwarming it is. The movie doesn’t even come close to the book.

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. I know I’m biased, but I genuinely consider this book one of the best novels ever written. The main characters are fantastic, Jane is sooo badass and Edward is adorkable. Some passages from this book are so beautiful I just want to read them again and again and cry in a corner.

The Nutcracker and the Mouse King by E.T.A Hoffmann. I always had a deep love for this fairy tale since I was a kid. I’ve read many translations and I could write a damn essay about its symbolism (and I am, in fact, currently reading one and it’s SO GOOD and I agree with every single word) and how it relates to Hoffmann’s vision of the world.

The Man who Fell to the Earth by Walter Tevis. During my childhood, my parents exposed me to a ton of stuff that involved David Bowie in some shape or form. I’ve never turned into a fan of his work but I am so glad I discovered this gem of a book. It’s so heart-wrenching and thought-provoking! I love it.

The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley. The book that made me interested in paganism and then turned me into an atheist with a deep -but strictly anthropologic- interest in the occult and ancient religions. Awesome female characters.

The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter. This book is everything. Angela Carter is my damn hero and I love everything that she wrote but this little book in particular. It’s scary, sexy, provocative and you should read it.

Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury. A story about two kids but the really interesting character is the father of one of them. I love how this book takes its time to explore the father-son relationship, a rare sight in fantasy/adventure books aimed at a younger audience. This book is both poetic and mature and the reason why young-adults authors should stop killing off parents from their narratives.

The Caves of Steel by Isaac Asimov. A buddy cop adventure starring a detective and a human-like robot. Their dynamic is fantastic, the mystery intriguing and well-thought-out. The sequels are even better.

A Midsummer’s Night Dream by William Shakespeare. My fave play by the Bard. I’ve seen it multiple times on stage after watching the 1999 movie starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Ruper Everett. I really like how all the plots entwine in the end and how cheeky and sassy the comedy is.

Casting has been announced for the West End production of Dear Evan Hansen which is due to open at the Noel Coward Theatre this November.

I swear anytime I write Javi and David together I cry

Lilly...Lilly left us. She left us! Lilly left us! "Were you trying to escape?!" Mason shouted. "That wasn't us, it was all them!" Rupert shouted. Mason turned to face me, glaring. "I had high hopes for you Clementine. I really did. But I guess you give me no choice." Mason growled out. I went stiff seeing him pull out his gun. "Don't please!" Eleanor shouted. "Your insane!" Gabriel screamed. Mason glared as us all, raising his gun towards me. No, I couldn't die before I saved AJ. Mason turned to his right, firing his gun at Francine's head. "Francine!" Eleanor screamed. My eyes widened as she collapsed to the ground, blood oozing from the hole in her head. A look of shock coating her face. "Why?! Why are you doing this?!" I shouted. "You all think your tough, that you can just frolic as you please?! Well I'm done playing nice boys and girls." "What do you mean?" Quinn whimpered. Everyone looked at each other, clearly afraid of what to do. "In exactly 1 hour, another one of you will be put down. Someone made a deal." Mason stated, looking us over. "Enjoy your last moments, I'm picking at random." Mason went back up the stairs, allowing others to come down them. Some guards shoved Eli and Conrad forward, and I bit my lip seeing the mans face. "Francine! Oh god!" The man crumpled to his lover side, eyes wide in despair. Conrad wept over his still body, his cries sending shivers down my body. "Wait... Mason said one of us took the deal." Sophia pointed out. "I bet it was one of them." Rupert said, looking at us. "Maybe it's a trick. Mason is a manipulator. He probably only stopped when he saw us trying to escape. Kept going even though someone already took the deal." Gabe explained. "My little boy, too smart." David said. "Then that means...one of us is a traitor?" Eleanor whispered. "And because someone took the deal, one of us will die in an hour..." Sophia slid down to the floor shaking her head. "W-What if he's lying?" I began, not wanting to lose anyone else. "We don't know that." Eli said. "She might be right." Gabe stood besides me. "Mason is a massive prick and trickster, it might be true." David muttered. "None of this would've happened if they just sat still!" Ruper shouted, holding a crying Quinn. "You don't really fucking believe that do you Rupert?!" David exclaimed. "Whatever the case is, we have to end this with that bastard DEAD." Conrad closed Francine's eyes, and stood up. "How? We're weaponless? Our numbers keep dropping! We're fucked!" Sophia exclaimed from her spot. "He's...right..." "Uncle Javi!" Gabe rushed to the man, helping him stand. I gave Javi a small smile, glad to see him awake. "Javi." David walked to his brother. "David I can..." Javi was shocked as his brother hugged him. "You came back." David whispered. Javi blinked a bit, before slowly returning the hug. "I'm sorry for leaving you guys." Javi said. "It's alright...just... just remind me to punch you later." David stated. "Will do brother..." Javi chuckled weakly. David pulled him closer, Javi rested his head on his brothers shoulder, close to tears almost. Despite the horrors he had been through, they had been forced through he wasn't alone. He had some family left, some hope left. Gabe smiled sadly at them, letting the brothers have their moment. Javi slowly pulled away, looking at us all. "What happened?" He asked. "We almost got out. But Mason caught us. Lilly and Jesus booked it, but..." I glanced back at Francine. "Goddamn, I'm sorry Conrad." Javi said. "All that matters is burning down this community. And taking that man down with it." Conrad exclaimed. "Like a captain going down with his ship." Eli added. I glanced at Eleanor, who was kneeling by Francine's body. "Eleanor..." I whispered. "First Tripp....Then Mitch, now Francine...Why..." She let out a soft sob. I crouched down besides her, wiping away her tears. "It's bad I know. But we can't stop." I replied. "How much longer until it's you on the floor Clementine? Or me..? Or any of us..? How much longer do any of us have?" Eleanor whimpered. My hands wrapped around her, as I hugged her tightly. "Christa, are you okay?" I asked. Christa poked at the fire silently. "Christa, I'm worried about you please talk to me." I looked at her. She glanced up at me sadly, pulling her hand away from her stomach. Not even a month after Omid died, Christa had gone into early labor. It was terrifying for both of us... and the baby didn't survive. "I'll be fine Clementine." Christa replied. "I'm sorry Christa..." I whispered. "Clementine, for the last time, it wasn't your fault." Christa stated. "If I had my stuff with my...maybe Omid would be..." I began, staring at ground silently. "Clem...it's how the world is now. it's cruel and unforgiving. I will do everything I can to save you, but...you know as well as I do now. It doesn't matter who you are. Wether your a boy or a girl. A baby or an elder. Me or you... One way or another well all end up on the ground... Each one of us only has so much time left..." She was right, there was only so much time left for each of us... Look at everyone we had lost. Doug, Mark, Larry, Carley, Lilly, Katjaa, Duck, Ben, Kenny, Omid, and... "Just like Lee..?" I couldn't stop myself from saying it. Christa looked up at me sadly, before nodding slowly. "Yeah..." She replied. Lee...of all people that I thought wouldn't die, it would be him. When he was bit, it felt like an awful dream. Yet it was true. I remeber being there for it. Watcing the color fade from him. His eyes turning a shade of light yellow. How he grew weaker and weaker. To the point he could no longer walk, it destroyed me. So young and naive, begging for it to be just some awful dream. That I would wake up in the mansion. To hear Kenny shouting at Ben or about the boat. Maybe to listen to Omid's funny remarks again. But no. It wasn't like that... the world was a cruel place now... And maybe Christa was right. How long until I would die too?
