Book Notes: Funny Story
Tumblr media
A new book from Emily Henry is the perfect way to finish up the month of April, and this is definitely one of those times when the bookseller perk of getting to read Funny Story early was a wonderful treat!
Daphne Vincent thought all the pieces of her life were falling into place. She’s engaged to a wonderful man, moved to his hometown of Waning Bay, Michigan, and landed her dream job as a children’s librarian. The wedding is only months away and Daphne is settling into her future when Peter comes home after his bachelor party and tells Daphne he’s leaving her. For his childhood best friend, Petra. Suddenly Daphne has a week to move out of the house that she thought she’d grow old in, but only has his name on the papers. And she’s trapped in Waning Bay until the end of the summer because of the Library Read-a-Thon, a fundraiser she’s been planning since she started her job. After that she can leave and never look back. Her ex’s new girlfriend not only participated in breaking up Daphne’s engagement, but she’s left her own boyfriend, Miles, behind to be with Peter. Daphne needs somewhere to stay, and Miles needs someone to cover the rent Petra is no longer paying. They say misery loves company and who better to be miserable with than the person in the same position you are?
Yet it takes being blindsided by invitations to Peter and Petra’s upcoming wedding to push Miles and Daphne into a building a tentative friendship. He's chaotic, she's buttoned up, but a drunken night out, two RSVP’s to the wedding neither of them want to believe is happening, and a teeny tiny little lie (they’re dating each other, they don’t need plus ones for the wedding) puts these roommates on the same team. Emily Henry excels at creating characters with good hearts trying to do their best in relationships while also working through the baggage of their past. In spite of his chaos, Miles is an absolute delight. When he finds out that Daphne is planning on leaving Waning Bay as soon as the summer is over, he takes it upon himself to share with her all the things he loves so much. His pleasure in life, even with his recent heartbreak, spills over into Daphne. As she makes friends of her own and finds her footing in Waning Bay, she starts to reconsider what might come next. I loved these characters and I loved their story and the audiobook is read by my favorite, Julia Whelan. What more could a romance-lover ask for?

To celebrate the release of Funny Story, Island Books also has some fun related merchandise for sale from Out of Print. T-shirts, tote bags and zip pouches, all in pops of color and just right to show off your Emily Henry love! I’ve snagged a T-shirt for myself, and am definitely eyeing a tote bag to pack up with spring and summer reading. Stop by Island Books and preorder your copy of Funny Story, out Tuesday, April 23rd. I can’t wait to hear what you think!

✩❄️🪩Review:
Jessica Joyce has given me no choice but to read this annually!
“A Risk Worth Taking” follows Claire Ashford as she prepares to pursue a job opportunity in San Francisco after she realizes how much her cautious nature has cost her. The night before she leaves, she decides to take a risk and spend it with Connor Stella, the gorgeous stranger at the holiday party where she’s bartending. But the weather has other plans, and soon one night with no strings attached turns into an entire weekend. Claire’s new adventure is just a plane ride away, but her heart belongs to the man she’ll have to leave behind.
This was simply the most delightful little novella I’ve ever read. It was only 78 pages and it had me giggling and smiling like crazy!
I am simply in love with Claire (my kindred spirit), Connor (my golden retriever boy), and their relationship. Sparks fly the moment they cross paths and Joyce works her magic to make their connection palpable. Their banter, the way take care with each other, and their physical compatibility made it clear that they were meant to be more to each other than a one night stand and I loved watching that come to fruition!

By Frenzy I Ruin by Cora Reilly

Overall, I really like this story, and I completely got tied up in the story, wondering what was going to happen next! There were a few twists, but the core of the relationship between Nevio and Aurora played out, for most of the book, in a pretty predictable manner, based on who they are and their families. How was it going to change? That was the part that kept turning page after page, and when it all finally fell into place, it was just so right <3

Hey romance readers! 💕
I'm back with ROUND TWO of the Romance Readathon! We had so much fun last year so I wanted to bring it back! For the entire month of February (1st-28th) I will read as many romance books as I can so join me in swooning over some fictional characters 🥺
If anyone wants a challenge, here are this year's reading prompts:
read a romance with your favorite trope
read a romance you weren't able to get to last year
read a romance by a bipoc author
read a romance that's part of a series (it doesn't have to follow the same couple, companion novels/novellas will do!)
read a romance that doesn't have an illustrated cover (challenging, I know!)
read a romance with lgbtq+ rep
read a romance with any pastel color on the cover
Please feel free to double up on prompts, no problem!
Use the hashtag #rr2023 for all posts related to the readathon. This can be your TBR, a book review, rant, reading update, absolutely anything you want.
Happy reading! 💗

☀️ At dawn, we read!! ☀️
But for real. I woke up at 4 this morning and could NOT get back to sleep.
So around 6 I gave up and started to read and subsequently finish Secretly Yours by Queen @tessabaileyisanauthor
I also started and finished Loathe to Love You by other Queen @alihazelwood
And I just. I can’t get enough 🥹 these authors write the best combination of steam, spice, and everything nice.
Only question now is, how can the rest of my day even compare?

Title: My Roommate is a Vampire
Author: Jenna Levine
Genre: Romance, Fantasy
Published: August 29, 2023
My Thoughts: This has scratched an itch I didn’t know I had since reading Twilight all those years ago.
Cassie Greenberg, an artist struggling to make a living, finds a beautiful Chicago apartment with a secret to hide. Her roommate, Frederick J. Fitzwilliam, is unusual, sleeping all day, out at night, and leaving heart-melting notes. When Cassie finds bags of blood in the fridge, Frederick must come clean. He is a vampire with a proposition for her, as he has a secret to hide. The story explores themes of identity, relationships, and the challenges faced by artists in their pursuit of success.
I’m not usually a romance genre reader. If I’m reading romance, it is because it is a subplot in a story. One of the reasons is I hate a lot of tropes that are in popular romance. My Roommate is a Vampire; however, has all the tropes I find juicy and yummy.
The pining is swoon-worthy, the humor is small but laughable, and the plotline is the cozy, feel-good atmosphere I wanted. Nothing ever feels too stressful, and while it might be simplistic in style, it is such a fun story that will stick with you.
I would recommend this to people who like romance that is slightly fun and doesn’t take itself too seriously. The conflicts in this story are handled in more of a humorous way, making the story a fun, relaxing time (especially during the cold months).

Hart is a marshal, tasked with patrolling the strange and magical wilds of Tanria. It’s an unforgiving job, and Hart’s got nothing but time to ponder his loneliness. Mercy never has a moment to herself. She’s been single-handedly keeping Birdsall & Son Undertakers afloat in defiance of sullen jerks like Hart, who seems to have a gift for showing up right when her patience is thinnest. After yet another exasperating run-in with Mercy, Hart finds himself penning a letter addressed simply to “A Friend”. Much to his surprise, an anonymous letter comes back in return, and a tentative friendship is born. If only Hart knew he’s been baring his soul to the person who infuriates him most – Mercy. As the dangers from Tanria grow closer, so do the unlikely correspondents. But can their blossoming romance survive the fated discovery that their pen pals are their worst nightmares – each other?
