“‘Every language is an old-growth forest of the mind,’ in Wade Davis’s memorable phrase. We see in words: in webs of words, wefts of words, woods of words. The roots of individual words reach out and intermesh, their stems lean and criss-cross, and their outgrowths branch and clasp.” #RobertMacfarlane (Landmarks, 2015, p.10). If I had one fantasy it would be to write something that Robert Macfarlane considered a literary landmark and hear his reflections on it. I’ve never enjoyed reading someone else’s writing about someone else’s writing quite so much as I enjoyed each of the ten such writings in this work. But this isn’t just an annotated bibliography. This is a personal book, with the author’s own words reaching out and intermeshing all of these venerable works; an overstorey transforming the individual trees into an old-growth forest. What a gift. This book will go on the shelf next to Wall Kimmerer, Oliver, Shepherd, Leopold, Muir, Thoreau, and Emerson - my own forest, as it’s shaping up to be. #Nature #HumanNature #Language #Reading_Life #Reading (at Edmonton, Alberta) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ca6L8xIOPkt/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
My first book for 2021 and what a delight! This year I’ve challenged myself to read 50.
My Review.... In my opinion a book that deserves to be read and appreciated by all. It’s full of wonderful word play, acrostic poems, hidden words and beautiful, full page artwork. Good for young and old alike. If you love to read good descriptive work, this is one for you!

"One cannot know the rivers till one has seen them at their sources, but this journey to sources is not to be undertaken lightly." Upstream is a beautiful and stunning short film by Robert Macfarlane on BBC4 shot entirely from the air, it follows the course of the River Dee in Scotland all the way to its source in the Cairngorm mountains, the highest of any river in Britain. Eerie, hypnotic and experimental, this film weaves together- dark and light - creating a songline that draws the viewer up, against the flow, into wildness, winter and strangeness. #upstream #nanshepherd #robertmacfarlane #cairngorm #rivers #riversrun #shortfilm #bbcfour #riverdee #returntothesource #wilderness #winter #wheretheriverruns #riversrunart #rivers #art #photography https://www.instagram.com/p/B3EvoZLDJUm/?igshid=et2stgufl6fy

. sketchbook/journal pages (Visual symptoms are not a ready guide.) found book Sept 2019 . A serendipitous pairing. The left - found text, ink & collage. The right - a paragraph (copied down later w/o really paying proper attention to the preceding page) from Robert Macfarlane’s book, Underland, wherein he quotes Rebecca Elson (which led to her wonderful book, A Responsibility to Awe). Crown Shyness, watercolor on paper, 12"x18", 2020 by Nancy Polo.
From Robert MacFarlane's Understory, "We stop and lie down for a while on the woodland floor, on our backs, not speaking, watching the trees’ gentle movements in the breeze, and the light lacing and lancing from fifty feet or more above us. Where the pollards spread out to form the canopies, I realize I can trace patterns of space running along the edges of each tree’s canopy: the beautiful phenomenon known as ‘crown shyness’, whereby individual forest trees respect each other’s space, leaving slender running gaps between the end of one tree’s outermost leaves and the start of another’s."
