“It’s a chemical compound made to make it easier for you.”
“Easier for me to what ?”
“Listen to your twisted visions”
“No to be corrupted”
“Nnnnnnoooooooo”
“Silence or Bucky goes on the black Market he will sell for millions.”

She Will Learn (Rio x Reader)
Look I will let y’all in on a little secret, the way this account is going to work is by me seeing your requests, making a mental note to finish them and then getting an idea for another imagine that wasn’t requested but can’t move on until I write it so.... Enjoy!
P.S I chose Greece cause I am from there and I never see us anywhere
(Y/n) had met Rio when she was about to graduate college, a business major that was striving for being the first millionaire in her family. She came from a lower middle class first generation immigrant from Greece, her parents were troopers for successfully raising her and her siblings, they never had things to spare yet they had enough to be respectful.
He saw her at a restaurant, completely overdressed and accessorized like she was dining in France, however she somehow made it look like she didn’t think about what she was going to wear, like this was her natural way of dressing, her nails were done and he noticed how... soft her hands looked.
What intrigued him was that she was extremely kind to everyone, she smiled brightly at the waiters and she would often reach over to her friends for a touch of encouragement of just a simple caress, she exuded confidence that made you feel like you would never dare to touch her, still she carried herself with elegance and in a graceful manner.
“Excuse me, can you tell me who are the girls at the table over there?”
“Oh they haven’t been here before but I can tell you they are here to celebrate for the girl in the red dress, it’s her birthday”
“Oh is it? Send them a bottle of champagne please”
“Right away Sir”
He was never the flashy type of guy, he never cared for stuff that showed his status or economic achievements, people that had money knew to never flaunt it carelessly. When it came to her, he felt the need to show off, to woo her and catch her eye, she had this sense of luxury, she looked like she took care of herself way too much to let men not treat her anything less than that.
He watched her face switch into surprise when the waiter came with the bottle of champagne, a few seconds after that her gaze went to him, as the waiter pointed towards him and then proceeded to open the bottle of bubbly.
She had noticed him when she entered for a few moments, although she decided that since it was her big night she wouldn’t waste time gawking at good looking men, she had saved money for months to be able to afford the finest for her big day, every year she wanted her birthday to be like the life she wanted. She send him a smile as her hand went to her heart to show gratitude for the gift.
Except that didn’t feel like enough, she felt like she could push it a bit more, try her luck just a bit, she looked too good to worry about a man turning her down, he would have to be mad or blind to do so.
She walked to him with the glass of champagne in her hand, giving him the chance to take her in. Her legs were exposed as the dress went to the middle of her thigs, they shined and looked so smooth making him wonder how good would it feel to touch them. She had a figure of a dream, as her hips swayed with every step, her posture was proud and she walked like a supermodel, if he didn’t know the owner he would have thought she was the one that had not just the restaurant, the entire block.
“I don’t think we’ve met, I’m (y/n), I wanted to thank you for the champagne, you really didn’t have to”
“I wanted to darling, I’m Christopher but people call me Rio, how wonderful to meet you”
He said, taking her delicate hand in his and pressing a light kiss on soft skin. He could smell the lotion of vanilla she had chosen to moisturize her skin, settle yet unforgettable. His raspy voice made her flustered, trying to mask it with a smirk and confidence, he was intriguing to her, the cool, calm and collected exterior that suited him so much.
“I wish I could stay and talk but I don’t like leaving my friends by themselves”
“I understand darling, we’ll be in touch”
-
It had been years since then, he had managed to not only stay in touch with you but make her the queen of his life. She was an asset that he so desperately needed, he trusted her with his life and knew she had the best intentions for him, her loyalty was iron made, her degree came in handy when he needed to handle business in a discreet manner, she was the master mind behind a lot of his negotiations, her brilliance on playing the trophy wife that didn’t know anything in front of others was the secret behind his success.
She is his secret weapon, so secret that no one knew she even existed, the few that did didn’t even know her name and the people that knew were the most trusted ones that worked with Rio for years, she liked to be under wraps, walking in and out of the building with the men Rio had hire to protect her and the rookies wondered who was she, he only called her with pet names when others were around but they could only address her as “Miss”, she was the miss of the mister and his most trusted soldier.
Despite that, (y/n) was no fool. She had broken up with Rio and called of the engagement several times, making Rio go wild every time. She wasn’t unreasonable, Rio was out of line a lot of the times, especially when Beth came in the picture, his men feared her just as much as him, maybe even more, so when she found out they had done such major damage multiple times but still took them back in, she would pack her stuff and leave without warning, leaving her ring and a note that wrote “goodbye” behind. That’s when he would hook up with Beth, make up for the loss of his queen, yet when he had manage to convince her to come back and buy her a new ring every time, he felt like he was on top of the world.
“Be honest with me Mick, who did this to him?”
“Everything points in one target, Beth”
“Of course. Thank you Mick, I got him”
She stood by him throughout his healing process, waited patiently until he was back on her feet, took care of his bullet wounds and had many sleepless nights to make sure he was alright. She was his wife to be after all, even kept in contact with Rhea and Marcus, made sure they were alright and taken care of in any way, shape or form.
“Are you ready mama?”
“Almost, can you help me with the necklace”
They were there when Rhea got the call from Beth, acting like there friends even though she caused Rios life and invited her for drinks. Rio knew (y/n) was boiling, wanted to take revenge for what Beth had caused and this time he understood, so they got dressed up to meet her instead of Rhea.
As Rio approached and took the necklace in his hands he saw it was the necklace he bought her for their one year anniversary, her birth stone surrounded with diamonds. When (y/n) let her hair down he got a whiff of her scent, still making him feel weak in the knees, he got closer to her and wrapped his one arm around her, his lips found the nape of her neck and left light kisses. She closed her eyes for a second to enjoy the feeling of warmth and lust he brought her.
“You look beautiful princess”
“It’s my first time meeting her isn’t it?”
“What have you planned gorgeous?”
“That’s for me to know and for her to find out, let’s go daddy”
She knew exactly who she was. Seeing the back of her head made her want to pull out her gun and blast her right then and there, that wouldn’t be classy now wouldn’t it? She approached the clueless woman and sat on her left side, leaving the right seat empty for Rio to join later.
“Can I get dirty martini please? Thank you dear”
She instructed the bartender before taking off the faux black fur coat to reveal a Split Floor-Length Sleeveless Spaghetti Strap Pullover black dress. The first thing Beth noticed about the young woman that sat next to her was the big diamond ring that she wore on her ring finger, mentally thinking of what that girl had done to earn it
‘she probably hasn’t worked a day in her life’ she thought, making herself feel a little bit better, she had to admit that she looked really pretty, the jewelry she had on complimented her skin tone and the dress looked like it was custom made. (Y/n) waited for her drink to arrive before she looked at Beth and got ready to reveal her identity.
“You must be Beth, I don’t believe we’ve officially met. I’m (y/n)”
Beth looked at her puzzled. How did the young woman that looked like she was some old mans pretty young thing to show off knew her. (Y/n) was smiling as she took a sip of her cocktail, knowing damn well that Beth had already made up her mind about what type of woman (y/n) was and completely missing the purpose of this meeting.
“How do you know my name”
“Oh I know everything about you, where you live, the names of your children, your sister Annie and your friend Ruby. Rio has told me all about you”
“Rio? How-”
“I know he doesn’t talk about it, I like to be invisible to the public eye... his secret weapon as some would say. I also know you are waiting for Rhea”
“She ain’t comin”
Beth heard Rio’s voice and her eyes went wide with fear. (Y/n) let out a soft giggle and took one more sip of her drink as Beth turned to look at him like she had seen a ghost, judging by how pale she had gotten she was more of that vibe than he was.
“Excuse me, can we get a glass of neat whiskey for the gentleman? Thank you so much”
(Y/n) ordered once more before hoping off her chair and joining Rio. He snaked his arm around her and brought her as close to him as he could before placing a kiss on her cheek.
“How you feeling mama?”
“Oh I was just having a chat with Beth”
“A-are y-you”
“His fiancé? Yes, we are planning on getting married on my homeland during the summer, aren’t we daddy?”
(Y/n) started rubbing Rios back as she smiled at him, she was super excited for her wedding, he had given her complete control to do whatever she wanted, it was her big day and he knew better than to object to anything.
“Oh we have to show her something”
Rio reached for his pocket and (Y/n) looked over at Beth who was in the verge of a mental breakdown. Rio pulled out his three bullets that the doctor had pulled out from his body, (y/n) wanted to throw them away but he insisted in keeping them, reminding him how he cheated death.
“Lung, spline, shoulder”
He put each one down in front of her. Beth had terrible aim and for once (y/n) was thankful that one of their rookies missed the shots. Beth stayed silent, taking in all the information, not only was he alive he also had a woman he was planning to marry, calling him “daddy” right in her face, she looked like she was straight out of a magazine and even thought she was kind to her that terrified her more, her entire life was crumbling in front of her.
“Now I think you understand that you are in a bit of a jam, Christopher has agreed that I should decide your punishment since he wanted to kill you-”
“Don’t, do that. I’m sorry babydoll, she will learn”
Beth had tried to leave in the middle of (y/n)’s sentence, making Rio grab Beth by the arm and restrain her from doing so. (Y/n) stayed stoic and just watched the scene unravel, she knew Rio would never allow anyone to disrespect her. As Beth sat back down Rio smiled (y/n) before taking her hand once more and placing a kiss on her knuckles. (Y/n) reached for his face and caressed his cheek with her free hand making Beth sick to her stomach, he had never looked at her like that, with such admiration and love.
“It’s alright, I will let it pass this one time”
“Go on mama”
“I feel like it would be too easy to kill you, such an easy way out. So now you will work for me”
“What?”
Beth felt her stomach twist at the statement. Working with (y/n), having to do daily tasks for her, a woman she had no idea even existed an hour ago, now she had work under her and take orders from her directly, for a second she thought that death would be better. (Y/n) left Rio’s side for a second and took Beth by the shoulders, standing right behind her, Beth’s eyes fell on her shinny ring, that only felt like someone was rubbing salt over her wound, he had probably spend a fortune for it. (Y/n) leaned closer to Beth getting next to her ear and causing goosebumps on Beth’s body.
“Think of it as an assistant or maybe help Rio with anything he needs but mostly you will be on call for anything I need. Since you wanted to outsmart Rio and spit where you eat, I need some help to plan the wedding and also take care of our business. What do you think darling?”
“I think it’s an excellent idea”
Rio was pleasantly surprised. (Y/n) was one of the most intelligent people he knew, bring Beth so close to her and making her work for their wedding even though she knew she had slept with him was a very cruel and mentally humiliating way to punish her.
She truly was one of the greatest choices he had ever done, no one could compete with her, she held such power that made Rio feel like he could not only trust her but also submit to her, let her take the wheel and not having to worry about anything going wrong. As he watched her look over at Beth there was no comparison, (y/n) had such way of carrying herself, that je ne sais quoi as some would say, she was the embodiment of female divine energy.
Rio knew that her leaving him all these times was a game of push and pull, making him work for her and a mental slap in the face, yet every time he ran to her like an obedient dog and begged for her to come back and take her spot as his queen in the palace, promised her and gave her everything she wished for, every ring was bigger and better than the one before. It wasn’t like he did it because she wanted it, he was the one that wanted to spoil her, give her everything under the sun, she deserved everything and he was for sure not going to hold back for his sweet little princess.
“And then when all of that is done... Rio can take care of you, I feel like it would bring bad luck to our household if we killed someone before the wedding”

Brio - in a vehicle plus life or death for the prompts ❤️
I don't know why I let myself so these prompts, they always spiral 🙈🙈 It's not gonna be a WIP, it's not gonna be a WIP
It’s still early, just past nightfall. Yet Rio can feel the hum of the string music in his ears and the stench of cigars weighing him down as if he could fall deep into slumber. Be it not for the hourlong carriage ride ahead – insisted he be spending the night at his family’s mid-town estate instead of a guestroom at his uncle's country mansion.
Dealings have been – there’s a lot of discussion points that lie ahead tomorrow. Caught between his own ambitions and the ego of a man twice his age and half his talent. He sinks back against the slick leather of the bench, it eases his discomfort just enough. Refused to take the larger, more lavish one – he’d rather arrive on horseback, anyway (Like a peasant, his grandmother would scold at the suggestion).
Mick, caught aback by his too-soon departure, is still retrieving the horses from the stables. Said it might be a little while before all would be in place. It’s alright, as long as he can steer away from any unnecessary socialite parties. It’s not lost on him the ladies of a certain standing his grandmother invites over for dinner on a much more frequent basis, smiling tight lipped at him, goading him, as he remained pleasant yet pointedly uninterested.
She must have send word to his aunt, for him staying solemnly in the carriage was not solely motivated of clearing his head after a harsh day of business, having his aunt send over flocks of undesirable prospects had him crawling out of his skin.
It’s fully dark inside, few parts inside lit for the harsh light of the moon on this particularly clear night.
He can’t blame the intruder for tearing open the door and thinking they can hide unseen from whatever noises he hears high up the hill.
For a few seconds he listens to her quick pants, fast trying to regain control of her lungs. In her hand there’s a bag, it’s faint but as she sways he can hear metal or something clinging like softly licked wind chimes.
Without a sound he takes out his handgun, clicks it audibly.
She gasps, stumbles as she tries to twist around too fast and falls back onto the bench across from him.
There’s a lantern next to him he has burning fast, casting the whole inside of the vehicle in a sea of orange. “Y’know,” he starts, adjusting the light. “They don’t take thieving lightly around here.”
Her hood has dropped to her shoulders, revealing a pale face with large blue eyes, her hair falling around her face like a servant. Her lips purse at his words, no doubt feigning confidence. “I only took what’s mine.”
He narrows his eyes at her, and he can see it – the moment she shifts, lets the cloak slide of her shoulders, pastes a look on her face he can see is unfitting to who he just saw. Something that fits her like a glove, only boring, offensive even compared to battle-ax that just broke in and stole her bag of trinkets.
“Think they gonna buy that?" he asks, unfazed. Outside murmur increases and there’s a torch nearing across the dark lawn.
Her face is inches from falling, eyes the gun still pointed at her, resting lazily on his leg – only it doesn’t. “No one saw me.”
“Yeah, who am I? Some stable boy or kitchen maid you can buy off with a coin or two?”
“Worth a shot,” it dribbles nonchalantly from her lips, but he can see her fidgeting with the belt of her dress as the noises outside start to take shape.
There’s something entertaining though, having this woman here. Not brave enough to test his aim and make a run for it, but feisty enough to talk back like that. Doesn’t she know who he is?
Feet away he can hear the shoes of horses clunk onto the pebbles, signaling Mick’s soon return. The horses neigh as a man must strike up conversation with him. A man that works for his uncle and will likely deliver him with the much too soon departure of his nephew. He groans inwardly, can only imagine now how much disrespect he’ll take from that. Setting him back a whole day of negotiations.
“Come here,” he tells the woman, pushing the gun back into his coat.
When she doesn’t act he takes her hand and pulls her into his lap. He searches her eyes, finds a sudden comprehension in his intentions, regardless of how vague the reason for those might be to her.
And he can’t say it’s unpleasant, feels a soft and feminine body curl into him under the shapeless sack she’s wearing. Unspoken, her mouth falls open, and he licks his lips taking it in.
Her hands circle around his neck, at the exact moment his hand slides into her hair. She doesn’t hesitate, leaning down to capture his bottom lip with hers, nibbles on it as if she’s shy about it. Contrary to how she moves against him in his lap.
Even before she has a chance to fully pull back he follows her, pushes and bites her lips until she sighs and keens so wanton against him. At first opportunity he licks into her mouth, revels in how she pushes back playfully, nails driving marks into his neck.
It’s unclear if it is only seconds or minutes, but he groans when she startles and leans back as some idiot pulls open the door.
One of his uncle’s guards, as he predicted. Face falling from an ah-ha to an oh-shit in a span of half a second when his eyes fall onto Rio’s face. “Sir, apologies.”
She has hidden her face in his neck, shielded from view. Smart girl.
He slides his hand over her ass, squeezes, making her yelp. “None taken,” he replies, stern but friendly. “Send my apologies to my uncle. I find myself… otherwise occupied.”
It's a short goodbye as the guard nods curtly and closes the door again.
She retracts herself from her hiding spot, face open. “Uncle?” Finally it seems like pieces of the puzzle are falling into place. “You’re Lord Gutiérrez.”
His thumb is still rubbing circles on the top her thigh, and she shows no sign of putting a stop to that, feels comfortable even.
“And who do I have the pleasure with?”
Doubt lingers in those seas of blue, as if he won’t be able to find out within hours – well, Mick will do that – if he wants to. Maybe he’ll send him to do a little recon on her anyway.
“Elizabeth Marks.”
The carriage pulls forward, Elizabeth falling into his chest as it does. “Where are we going?” she breathes hot against him.
“Somewhere you can keep your head and your booty, and I my flawless reputation. If you don’t have any objections against that?”
“Okay,” she nods, far too compliant.
Yeah. He’s definitely sending Mick out tomorrow, perhaps tonight. If only for his own piece of mind.

Misfortune
credit to @vixenfoxpup this is her work, all characters belong to her.
Warnings: Character death
Misfortune.
It happens to absolutely everyone at least once in their lives. Whether it be the loss of a beloved’s life, of one’s own life, or the worst luck that one can imagine, it has affected everyone in the world.
Well, what if misfortune was given by one being? But not by their own will? What if misfortune was the very culmination of the one forced to bestow it upon others? Would you then pity the one who had to force their gift upon others? Or would you still resent them with all your might, wishing terrible events to happen upon them, because of something they cannot control?
Maybe she can answer these questions, through a look into her past, present, and what is to come for her.
Introducing, Rahni.
The young immortal had beauty beyond compare, with locks of curly, blossom pink hair, soft gray eyes, rosy skin, and a smile that could brighten anyone’s mood.
This is the woman who built her kingdom, brick by brick, inch by inch, day after day. For nearly three hundred years, the woman single handedly made her empire one to remember, with the fire made blue by those who have wronged her, and who she had slaughtered. She built her empire in the coldest of lands, to ensure that any mortal who trespassed there would not survive unless she granted it.
She ruled there with a mighty, yet kind, hand. Every day, she would mingle with and befriend her subjects, granting them each their daily needs, whether it be advice or material items, such as food and warmth, in the freezing air. This went on for generations, the empire living without war due to how generous Rahni was with other kingdoms, them being unable to find reason to attack the Arctic Empire.
Until, one man showed up. A stranger who had managed to survive the frozen wasteland and, what was rumored to be enchanted, forest that surrounded the empire, and when he was confronted with about what his purpose was for being in the empire, he simply said, “To see Her Majesty, myself, and see if she truly is the ruler she is put up to be.”
This angered her loyal subjects, offended by how someone could doubt their ruler’s authority, and caused them to notify the empire’s guards, arresting him. Word got around to the Queen and soon she summoned him in her throne room, due to her curiosity. The man presented himself by the name of Zieran, and he had come from another kingdom, to study how her own functions.
This surprised the queen, and out of pure curiosity she granted Zieran permission to live and study in her land, as long as he stayed in her palace.
Over the course of the next few years, Zieran learned more and more not just about the empire’s economy and system, but about Rahni, herself. How she would always visit her townsfolk, communed with her palace servants, and laughed with her guards. He learned that she never treated those that were below her authority as such, instead lowering herself in front of them, and when he asked those she spoke to about it, they simply stated that it was impossible not to treat her as an old friend every time she came to them.
Soon enough, Rahni and Zieran began to become closer, when Rahni requested that he shared his studies with her each week, so she could verify if what he had found was true. She eventually realized that everything that he found was indeed factual, but she still called for these meets, as an excuse to see the tall man each week. Soon each week turned to twice a week, to every other day, to every day. The two were inseparable, soon falling in love. They were then wed, years into the ordeal.
The new king and queen continued to rule for years on end, Rahni sharing her youth with Zieran, not making him immortal, but so that he aged tremendously slower. Together they colonized new lands, allianced with more kingdoms, and were infamous for their good deeds to their people and others.
...Alas, it was never meant to be.
One evening, Rahni had walked into her chambers to witness an assassin in the act of murdering her husband. In a fit of rage, she annihilated their soul, before rushing to her husband, who died in her arms that day.
The village rarely saw their ruler after that day, for she never spoke to anyone outside the palace, and those that she did speak to only had short, curt conversations with her. She continued to grieve for her king, but that was merely the beginning of her history with misfortune, and how it would forever affect her future.
“M’lady?”
Rahni lifted her head from her hands, having been in deep concentration, focusing on her royal reports and proclamations from neighboring kingdoms. She had just started reading a letter from the fellow god and emperor, Rio, before she saw that one of her head guards was at the door to her office.
“Yes, sir?”
“You see, ma’am, the other guards and I found something, and we’re not sure what to do with her.”
“...’Her’?” Rahni’s eyebrows furrowed in confusion. What on Ranos was he talking about?
“Yes, ma’am. I believe that you should see her for yourself.” Curiosity once again got the best of the immortal woman, so she had her guard lead her to her throne room. “Before I open this door, your Highness, I ask that you don’t… overreact.”
Now Rahni was itching with suspense, dismissing her guard with a mere wave of her hand before reaching for the door’s knob.
What she found on the other side shocked her.
The noises of a baby’s wails greeted her ears, and standing in front of her throne was one of her handmaidens, holding a crying infant. Rahni practically sprinted to her maid, not sparing a glance as she asked, “Where was she?”
“We found her by the horse stables, madam-”
“How long was she there?” Rahni’s hands were held midair, as if she were contemplating just snatching the baby from the maid’s arms.
“It can’t have been more than a day, when our guards made the patrol around the palace grounds last night, there was no one in sight, then when one of our stable boys went to replace the horses’ feed, there she was in the feeder,” the maid was looking warily between the baby and the queen, not sure what to do in that situation. Rahni continued to restrain herself from grabbing the bundle in the other woman’s arms, but she did lean closer to examine the supposed orphan’s features.
Despite her face being bunched up from wailing, she could see that she had emerald green eyes behind tears, and a small head covered in ginger locks of hair. On the sides of her head poked out small ears with slight points on the ends. Rahni could no longer resist the urge to reach for the child, so instead of taking her into her own arms, she settled for having the girl wrap her small right hand around her own pointer finger, doing so made her wails silent.
Rahni wept.
She, as an immortal, would never be able to have a child with a mortal, hence why she had no children while her husband breathed. Yet, Rahni could not deny the maternal instinct in her heart when she made contact with this small human. But…
“I can’t care for her…” Rahni forced herself to remove her finger from the infant’s grasp, and once she did she began to cry again, this time harder as she shook her soft hands in fists. Rahni resisted the urge to place her finger back in her hold. “I wouldn’t be able to find time for her, let alone take care of her!”
“Then let us do it!” Another maiden entered the throne room, trailed by a few more. “Let us take care of her! We’ll feed her, change her, and make sure she grows healthily!” Rahni was taken aback by the womens’ urge to keep the girl. She looked between the maidens, to the baby in their arms, to the room around them. Still looking unsure, the eldest maid, who was currently holding the babe, spoke up.
“Mistress, you’ve been so glum since Zieran, you need someone like this in your life again,” The woman paused, still seeing uncertainty in the queen’s eyes. “Would you like to hold her?”
Rahni’s eyes lit up, despite her somber stance. She silently nodded and walked towards her throne, the maidens following closely behind. At this point, even a few guards were not-so-discreetly poking their heads through the main door.
Now seated on her grand throne, Rahni extended her arms expectantly, soon receiving what she requested. With the infant now in her arms, she stopped her loud screeches, and looked up at the queen, with big eyes.
Rahni’s heart lurched in her chest, and as she gazed down at the ginger babe in her hands, the palace staff knew that there was a new addition among their midsts.
Rahni decided that it would be best to assume the role of the infant’s older sister, instead of mother, but she did bestow the child with the name Xena. Xena continued to grow and age with beauty and grace, and the two sisters’ bond was unlike any other. Rahni always made sure that the other’s needs were met, and Xena consistently helped her sister in times of need, including helping the queen become used to visiting her people more often, again.
However, sixteen years later when things began to look up for Rahni, it all came crumbling down again with misfortune.
Xena, now sixteen, had quite the habit of using Rahni’s personal library. The young woman knew of her sister’s immortality, and of the many different ethereal beings and realms, so one day, while looking through the shelves of books, she stumbled upon a worn book on a back shelf. The book’s cover was covered in dust, and the spine was falling apart. Blowing the dust off, Xena found that the book was about the undead realm.
This was one of the few realms that Rahni refused to tell her sister about, and the fact that Xena had found this made her ecstatic. So, opening to the novel’s pages, she found an endless supply of knowledge about the realm, such as the unique species, mannerisms of the undead, and what the terrain was like, ranging from warped forests to wastelands that contained lost souls in its very soil.
But what interested the young princess the most was the ruler, Shugarah. The queen of the undead, stated to be ruthless and unforgiving. The more she read about her, the more she wanted to know, so one day when Rahni went to visit another kingdom to discuss a compromise, Xena began the process of creating a portal to this forbidden land. According to the book, she needed materials such as obsidian, ruby dust, and the portal creator’s blood.
So she set to work in a private section of the palace garden, where she layed a circle of obsidian in the grass, and spread the ruby dust in the center. Lastly, she used a rock to cut her hand. With the blood oozing from her palm, she mixed it in with the ruby dust in the center. Xena took a step back as the portal roared to life. The dust and blood swirled within the obsidian to create a window into the hellish land, and as she looked into it, her body was struck with fear, but along with that fear was intrigue.
After she patched up her new wound, she mustered all of her courage, and grabbed a bag of supplies, such as the book, first aid, food, some gold, more ruby dust, and she jumped into the unknown.
The first thing she felt was heat that she could never compare to the summer’s hottest days, but despite the temperature, she did not sweat.
“Odd,” she whispered, as she examined her clothing, seeing no sweat marks. Looking around all she could see were red rocks that made the floor, that covered the sky, and crawled up all around her. Collecting herself, she began her trek through the land, book in hand. What she was searching for was Shugarah’s fortress, which was said to be hidden deep in the center of the world.
On her journey, she found indescribable places and creatures, including an ocean of lava instead of water, purple and blue forests, and walking skeletons.
After what seemed like days, she finally approached the grand walls of Shugarah’s fortress. Just as she was about to begin her treach through the walls of the infamous building, she saw a few young creatures in the corner of her eye. They seemed to be humanoid… pigs? She remembered reading about them, and how they were called ‘piglins’. They only came up to her waist, and some looked undead compared to others, their skin green and bones showing, but nonetheless, they played with wooden swords.
She giggled at their little game, and approached them.
“Hello!” The piglins had not noticed her before, but when she spoke, they seemed very startled and the tallest one nervously held his sword at her, while the rest hid behind him. Xena sat down, not wanting to seem threatening to the young piglins, and reaching into her bag, pulled out the gold she had brought, which were in little nuggets.
The tallest immediately recognized the yellow mineral, and his pupils dilated at the sight of it, but his stance did not move, and he was still focused on protecting the other piglins. Xena then placed a few nuggets on the ground, and crawled back slowly, waiting for him to approach her instead of her approaching him. Soon enough the piglins approached her, one by one, five in total, and Xena found herself immersed in playing with the foreign children.
She wasn’t sure how long they played together, and was also unaware of how long she was being watched by a mysterious figure from the fortress walls, which was now about ten yards away from the group.
The playtime between the two species led to a makeshift conversation. The piglins understood a miniscule amount of English, but could not speak it. Xena pulled out her book once more, looking for the section about the others’ species, and she, herself, began to make makeshift words in their tongue, which consisted of grunts and groans instead of fluent words. With her back now to the fortress, the piglins sat in front of her, listening and seeming to giggle at her poor attempts to speak like them. One even laid their head in her lap, seeming to be the most comfortable with her presence.
This went on for who knows how long, but the end was coming closer. Eventually, Xena saw as all of the young piglins around her stiffened and became eerily silent, except for the, what seemed to be, youngest that had fallen asleep in her lap. All of their beady eyes became locked on something behind her, and before she could realize what was happening, a voice spoke.
“Impressive, I’ve never seen them so open around something not of their kind.” Xena hesitantly craned her neck to glance behind her, and there she was. Shugarah. She was even more elegant than she was said to be in the book, and Xena could only gaze in awe.
Shugarah wore a dress of black silk that hugged her slim figure, the only skin that showed was that of her feet and a portion of her leg that revealed itself in a slit in the dress. Her sleeves were made of a slightly transparent material, drawing attention to the muscle in her biceps and forearms. Her blonde hair was pulled back into a tight braid that swept over her shoulder, long enough to have the end touch her hip. The goddess stood at what seemed to be a seven foot tall stance, with her gazing down at the teenager in a slight interest, with her glittering hazel eyes.
Xena couldn’t help but feel the urge to bow in the intimidating presence of the queen of the dead, but could only sit there due to the sleeping piglin on her legs. Snapping out of her trance, she turned back around to softly remove the creature from her lap, but froze again when she felt a hand on her shoulder.
“No, no! Don’t move him, they can be quite rowdy when woken abruptly,” Shugarah had knelt down to be directly behind the much younger being, and her head was just above Xena’s shoulder. “Here, let me take him.”
Before Xena had time to process, Shugarah’s long arms reached around the girl, and swiftly took the snoring child into her own grasp, not even stirring the small piglin from his slumber. They both stood then, and the teenager wasted no time turning around to properly bow to the queen.
“Oh, dear, none of that, now,” Shugarah shook her head, moving the child in her arms so that one of her hands was free. “Now, state your purpose.”
“Uhm, no specific reason, Your Highness! I-I just found this book, and I-”
“A book, you say?” Shugarah raised an eyebrow. She leaned slightly to look around Xena, and saw the book there, it’s pages still open to where it spoke of hell’s many creatures. Xena began to fumble over herself as she rushed to turn around and pick up the abandoned novel.
“Yes!” she cried. “I had found it in our library, and your world sounded so interesting, so I-”
“Made the portal…” Shugarah mumbled, breaking eye contact. The two stood there for a minute in silence, before Shugarah asked, “So tell me, mortal. Do you have a name?”
Shugarah was surprised when Xena hesitated to answer. As she looked down at the ginger, she couldn’t help but notice that she was looking at the nearby fortress as she fidgeted with her hands.
“Well?” Shugarah stared at her expectantly.
Xena blinked, drawing her gaze away from the fortress, back up to the queen before her.
“Well, your Highness, I come from the Esther family, and I live with my sister-”
“‘Esther’ as in Rahni Esther?” Shugarah’s eyes lit up, and a smile graced her features before she realized her reaction, and she cleared her throat. “I mean, you come from Rahni Esther’s bloodline?” This sudden change of tone confused the mortal, but she didn’t question it. Instead she merely began to walk past Shugarah, towards the fortress, continuing to gaze at the intimidating structure.
“Yeah, she’s my older sister,” she answered, without looking at the other. Shugarah blinked at how nonchalantly a mortal could say that their sibling was a goddess.
At this point, the piglin children had run off, leaving just the youngest still asleep in Shugarah’s arms.
After a moment of watching Xena, Shugarah had two thoughts at once. “You still never told me your first name, child.”
“Oh, my apologies, it’s Xena.”
“What a lovely name,” Shugarah then initiated her second thought. “Would you like to come inside?” Now that caught her attention, causing Xena to turn around, her eyes as bright as stars. The queen chuckled at her enthusiasm, and led the younger being towards her abode, with the redhead practically bouncing on her toes.
Once inside, Shugarah introduced Xena to some foreign cuisines, and the two made small talk with each other about the underworld and overworld, and how their kingdoms were run differently. They had been talking for about an hour until, “Miss?”
“Yes, Xena?”
“I was wondering, in the book it said that you were ‘unforgiving’ and ‘cruel’, and I wanted to ask, uhm, how come you haven’t…”
“Killed you?”
Xena was shocked by how blunt she was, but she nodded sheepishly, awaiting Shugarah’s response.
“Oh, it’s because you looked interesting, I guess.”
Xena’s skin paled, but then the queen laughed.
“Dearest, I’m joking with you! I was intrigued while watching you play with the children. Most adventurers who survive the path to my fortress don’t survive, and when they do arrive, most try to attack the piglins and their young. So when you came along, you did something I wasn’t expecting, and not much down here is ‘different’, so to say.” Shugarah looked away, a somber smile on her face.
The two continued to chat until Xena realized how long it must’ve been since she left her realm. Bringing this to Shugarah’s attention, the queen offered to make a special portal that would lead right into the fortress, for whenever the young woman wanted to visit at any given time.
Agreeing to this arrangement, Shugarah led Xena to her, what looked to be, a garden with many exotic plants and a few mystical creatures roaming around the grounds. The goddess proceeded to make a much more grand portal than the makeshift one that Xena had made, with it standing upright instead of on the ground. Once activated, Xena could see her garden on the other side, and more importantly, who was on the other side.
Xena cringed at how Rahni seemed to be absolutely fuming, standing with her arms crossed in the garden, near Xena’s previous portal. She looked up to the queen, only to see her wide eyed, seeming to be absolutely enamored with the overworld, or, more specifically, the other goddess.
Taking a deep breath, Xena stepped through the portal, with Shugarah staying behind, but still visible within the portal’s borders. Rahni began to approach her sister, looking ready to scold the living daylights out of her, but then she glanced behind her, and froze. Her eyes went wide, much like how Shugarah’s had, and her face went a light shade of red. Xena decided to slip past her, waving to Shugarah before departing towards the palace.
The two goddesses gazed at each other, only hearing of the legends that the other held, and never actually meeting in person. Little did either of them know, this moment would change their lives forever.
From that day forward, Rahni, instead of Xena, snuck to the portal to see Shugarah. In their time together, Rahni learned that the other goddess had also lost her husband recently, and Shugarah learned of Rahni’s kingdom and how she came to be the empress she is now. There was an immediate connection between the two, which was plain to see for anyone. Xena would also involve herself in the queens’ affair, being a, what one would call, “wingwoman”. Before either of them knew it, they were in love.
For years, the two’s bond grew stronger and stronger. But, again.
It was never meant to be.
Rio, the god of chaos and monstrosity, had heard of the queens’ bondage, and out of pure boredom, decided to come in between it. He watched from afar, still feigning friendship with Rahni, as he searched for anything to bring the lovers apart. During his watches, he found one who was close to both of them, and that they would do anything for her.
Xena Esther.
One night, he snuck into her room, and while there, made an absolute monster out of her. He cursed her to forever walk on all four limbs, to be given a jaw full of teeth sharper than any sword, and a mutilated body of orange, a mix between all of scales, feathers, and fur.
When he completed the transformation, his maniacal laugh could be heard all throughout the palace’s walls. This awoke Rahni, and she practically flew to her sister’s bedroom, but alas, it was too late. Rio’s infamous power was irreversible.
She wept at the sight of her younger sister, now a horrid beast, who didn’t even seem to recognize her older sibling. Rahni was forced to have her guards lock her away for everyone’s own safety, including Xena’s.
Shugarah eventually got word of what had occurred, and she was absolutely furious, enraged that another god could do this to an innocent soul. She would have gone to punish him, herself, if Rahni hadn’t stopped her. Shugarah could see the pain and anguish that the empress felt, and decided that the best thing for her to do would be to comfort her companion.
Years after the incident, Rahni and Shugarah had wed and conjoined their two kingdoms, Rahni’s being the practical gateway to the underworld. Rahni was slowly recovering from the loss of her sister, but soon enough, the two wives could not live happily forever.
Rahni had been asleep, Shugarah managing the souls passing into the afterlife that night, when an aura of suspense swept over the empire. It was a night that was very similar to another.
The night King Zieran had been murdered. And soon, it was about to happen again.
As Rahni slept, a guard entered her bedroom. Unbeknownst to anyone in the palace, it was an imposter. A wolf in sheep’s clothing.
The stranger approached the queen’s sleeping figure, and slowly raised a sharp dagger above her head. But… they couldn’t do it. The assassin could only hold the weapon in the air, trying to force their arm to finish the act, but eventually had to pull themself away forcefully. Rahni slowly awoke to see the intruder, frozen next to her bedside. Her gray eyes showed minimal fear, for she could see that the soul before her may have had cruel intentions, but their heart was good.
She quickly disarmed them, and sat them on the floor so that she could speak to them calmly. The stranger soon burst into tears, murmuring apologies not to Rahni, but someone else. She gave them a minute to compose themselves, until they were finally capable of speaking. She did, however, resort to threatening them for the truth, still wary due to this person having tried to kill her not an hour beforehand.
They introduced themself as Faux, and that he was the younger brother of the assassin that had killed Zieran. He had come to avenge his brother, and to finally prove to the world that it was, in fact, possible to kill an immortal being. Rahni could not help but feel pity for the boy before her, for he looked to be no older than sixteen. He reminded her of her sister, in a strange way. So, she struck a deal with Faux.
“If you are able to slay the god, Rio, then I will grant you your brother back, in return your word that you and your brother will never slay another living being again.”
Faux agreed, and Rahni then granted him the supplies that he would need to defeat the god of monstrosity. Of these supplies included a charm that would turn Faux into an ordinary fox as a disguise, and a vial of serum that would turn its consumer to stone.
And so, Faux set off on his quest to kill a god. When he reached Rio’s kingdom, a temple within a jungle, he activated the charm and turned into the small, orange mammal. He snuck into the temple, where other animals from around the world roamed. Rio liked to surround himself in the company of different creatures to examine their features, and make new monsters with the inspiration.
The time was noon, and Faux had discreetly slipped the serum into Rio’s cup of wine. He watched from afar as the god entered the room and sat down to his meal, and he witnessed the unsuspecting king down the wine in one gulp. Instantaneously, Faux saw that Rio’s skin turned to a hard stone, forever frozen in the position of placing his goblet on the table.
Rahni could feel from across the world that the deed was done, so she revived Faux’s brother’s soul, and she fled to her dungeon, where Xena had been kept for nearly six years. However, what she found horrified her far more than the beastly figure that her sister had previously had.
Xena was dead. The transformation from her monstrous form back into a human was too much for her body to handle, and there she was on the dungeon floor, limp and lifeless.
Rahni’s shriek echoed through the entire empire, and the grief that overcame her was unbearable. She sobbed as she held her sister close to her chest, her tears flowing more than they ever had before. Xena’s death was the one that broke the young goddess.
Rahni isolated herself from absolutely everyone but Shugarah, and she never spoke again. Throughout the years of her existence, Rahni who had once been a goddess of promise and prosperity, was now the culmination of grief and sorrow, all due to her everlasting misfortune.

16. “Control your anger or you’ll have me to worry about.”
Request: Rio coming to your aide with an angry customer 16. “Control your anger or you’ll have me to worry about.” First time meeting
Pairing: Rio x Reader
Warnings: Threats of violence because...it’s Rio
Word count: 920
It was only 2 PM and you were already so frustrated you could cry. Customers were shitty year-round. This wasn’t anything new. Dealing with customers when there was not a single roll of toilet paper on the shelves, however, was different. For as angry as certain customers would get when you didn’t have the product they were looking for or when they tried to ask for refunds and exchanges without receipts, this was something entirely new. You were stressed out, overworked, and underpaid. Your patience and sanity were at an all-time low and your body felt like it could give out at any second. As luck would have it, the universe felt that things just weren’t irritating enough for you and decided to step it up.
You were ringing up the groceries of canned food and some produce for a patient elderly woman. Toward the end, she grabbed a few candy bars from the shelf and tossed them in. Patting the Snickers, she smiled.
“For my grandbabies.”
You smiled in return. Your first genuine one all day if you were being honest. She was adorable and her fluffy, white curls warmed your heart. That was until the sweaty, middle-aged man in a suit that was waiting in line behind her decided to open his mouth.
“Yeah, yeah. Have your girl talk after hours. I got things I need to do.”
He made a shooing motion with his hands and the smiles dropped from both your and the elderly woman’s face. She grumbled something that you could not hear and tossed an unsavory look over her shoulder so show her displeasure. You, on the other hand, had to plaster on a fake smile and act as is everything was fine. As if you didn’t want to choke the disrespectful man.
The old woman left the checkout area with her cart and in her place now stood the rude man.
"Good afternoon."
You extended the small greeting, hoping that maybe showing him some kindness would curb his salty attitude.
No such luck.
He ignored you entirely, simply tossing his groceries down onto the conveyor belt. You rang them up as fast as you could. Not because you cared if he had to wait, but so he could get out of the story and away from you faster. Ringing up the total, you told him that he could swipe when he was ready. You looked around as you waited, eyes locking with the good looking man standing patiently behind him. He had a lax aura about him, no hurry. His shoulders were relaxed and he wore a small smirk, nodding to you when he caught your eyes. You smiled warmly and he returned it, the moment cut off by the angry man suddenly getting even angrier.
"Declined? What do you mean declined?!"
You looked down at the screen and nodded, confirming.
"The card declined, sir. Try swiping it again."
The customer did so with an impatient huff, only to receive the same error.
"That's bullshit! Do you know how much money I make?!"
His comment was laughable and you had to fight the pleased smile that was trying to work its way onto your face.
"I'm sorry, sir. Would you like to try another card?"
Your words seemed to piss him off even more and his face grew red.
"I don't need another card! I've got thousands in my account!"
You weren't exactly sure how to respond to that. If it were true, those thousands seemed to be taking a vacation. Not knowing what else he wanted you to do, you offered a suggestion.
"Could you possibly pay in cash?"
If life had been a cartoon, you swore smoke would've started coming out of his ears.
"Let me speak to your manager! I guess you're too stupid to fix the problem."
You opened your mouth to explain that it wasn't an issue that needed to be fixed on your end, but the man behind him beat you to the punch.
"Or maybe you're too stupid to transfer your funds."
You both turned to face the ballsy stranger.
"Excuse me?"
The man's smirk stayed in place and he took a slow step forward, looking the older man over.
"I said, maybe you're the stupid one. Yelling at old ladies and mouthing off to innocent, beautiful cashiers."
He allowed his eyes to lock with the man now and his smirk was nowhere to be found.
“You're getting mad at people that ain't got nothing to do with your mid-life crisis. So, control your anger or you’ll have me to worry about.”
His voice was low as he delivered the thinly veiled threat. No one knew this man, but from his language and demeanor, it was a safe bet that having to deal with him was probably not good. The angry man looked back at you, both rage and fear in his eyes and he huffed. Making a dismissive motion, he flailed his hands and hissed at you.
"I don't even want this shit anymore. You can keep it."
And just like that, he was walking away from his groceries, clutching his declined MasterCard as he stomped out of the store. You pushed his bags off to the corner, a true smile on your face now as you came face to face with the knight who talked shit to him when you couldn't.
"Thanks for that."
Now that smirk was back as he looked at you, head tilted back.
"Nah, don't worry about it. I'm Chris."

You Can Be My Wingman (Part Two)
Pete "Maverick" Mitchell x reader
Warnings: mentions of death
Context: Back in Miramar, Maverick is basically emotionally beating himself up about what happened to his friend, (Y/n).
A/N: I don't know how well these will do, but I'll keep them coming for now 😂💛
Masterlist.
"You've got to stop beating yourself up over Quicksilver, Mav." My RIO, Goose, says as I slam my locker door a little too hard, coming over to me with a towel wrapped around his neck, a gentle smile on his face. "I know you cared about her, but it wasn't your fault their plane spun out."
Gritting my teeth at the memory, I turn to him.
"I flew in front of her. It is my fault she got caught in the current." I look away, guilt encroaching on my heart again, "And now she's probably dead so I'll never get to apologise."
"You don't know that, there was never any evidence to say they died." Goose tries to reassure me, but I don't buy it.
"Oh, come on. Their GPS went offline with the plane and we've never found them on our search flights. There's no chance they're still alive, not after that crash."
"You don't have enough faith in Arrow. He'll keep 'em alive." A voice behind us states. Spinning, we come face to face with a serious looking Iceman.
"He can't do that if he's dead." I retort, irritatedly. Sighing, I grab my stuff and leave, heading out to the hangers.
For two weeks now, (Y/N) and Matthew have been missing, and it's been weighing heavily on my heart. They were some of our best flyers, and could hold their own against most enemies, so it was a terrible stroke of bad luck when they crashed out on the training flight. I do admit that having (Y/N) missing makes life worse for me; she has become a close friend of mine during our time here, and I hate that she's gone. In all honesty, I'd started to develop more intimate feelings for her before the incident, and now she's gone, the feelings are twice as strong. If I ever see her again, I will confess: I can't afford to lose her again.
Taking a seat in one of the uncomfortable chairs in the hanger, I wait for the other lieutenants to arrive, idly watching the horizon as I think back to when I'd sit here with Quicksilver, joking about and having fun. Clenching my jaw, I look down at the piece of string around my wrist. She'd given it to me when we were drunk one night, claiming that it would "Strengthen our friendship!" as she clumsily tied it around my arm. She had a similar one, which I'd given her at the same time.
A wry smile tries to push through as the memory surfaces, but it is soon dampened when the commander strides past, the rest of the lieutenants filtering in after him.
Plonking himself next to me, Goose grins before leaning in to whisper to me;
"Iceman says he heard the commanders saying that we're gonna be flying against their fastest today. I can't wait!"
I try to be excited, for his benefit, but my attempt falls flat.
"Yeah, it'll be cool."
I can't help thinking that (Y/N) would've loved the challenge, imagining her face light up as she heard the news, that same fiery glint of determination that always shines through in her eyes.
Goose notices my reluctance, but doesn't pick up on it. Vaguely, I listen to what the commander has to say, taking in the instructions subconsciously, my mind elsewhere. Eventually, we head off to the planes, our helmets and kit ready. Excitedly, Goose practically flies into his seat, grin wide and bright, his eyes finding mine briefly. I follow him up, strapping myself into my seat in front of the joystick, getting comfortable and adjusting to the smaller, cramped space.
Ten minutes later, we are the first in the air, the aircraft wheeling and banking through the clouds aimlessly until the rest are with us.
"Goose to tower, who are our wingmen? Out." Goose speaks into the radio, contacting the tower back at base.
"Tower to Goose and Maverick, your wingmen are Iceman and Slider. Out."
"Roger that."
As if on cue, Iceman pulls up through the clouds to our left, a little behind us, signalling to us through the cabin window. Signalling back, I concentrate on controlling the plane as a light wind hits us, angling it so we have a view of the ground and the horizon.
"Jet to our right, a little below but behind." Slider's voice crackles through the radio.
Allowing myself to look back, I locate the enemy plane, noticing Viper as the pilot.
"You got him?" I ask through the radio, waiting for their reply.
"Roger that, we'll get him." Iceman replies, before the plane wheels away, leading the enemy jet away as another replaces it.
"You ready, Maverick?" Goose quips, nervously.
"Born ready, Goose." I say before dropping the plane into a dive, beginning an elaborate series of tricks to throw him off us.
It's a long, drawn out chase, but eventually we end up behind the jet, a small success, though we have yet to get him on missile lock. Minutes later and we have him.
"YES, MAV, WE'VE GOT HIM!" Goose calls to me, the RIO ecstatic.
"Iceman, how you getting along? We've caught our guy." I report to our wingman.
A second passes before we get a reply.
"Almost there."
"You want some help?" Goose questions.
"No, we're good, thanks." Slider responds this time.
"Ok, we'll land." I say quickly.
"Goose to tower, permission to land please? Out."
The radio crackles slightly.
"Tower to Goose, permission granted. Out."
"Woo, great balls of fire, let's go!" The RIO laughs behind me, voice relieved.
Guiding the plane back to the airbase, I get ready to land, bracing myself for the impact. The landscape rushes by around us, the dusty ground coming closer and closer as we speed towards it, everything as it normally is.
Except one thing.
As we fly past, I notice a glint out of the corner of my eye, like the sun is reflecting off of an object on top of one of the mountains to the side of the base. Confused, I ask Goose to check it out, my own attention needed on the rapidly approaching runway.
"It looks like a person, but they're walking funny, like they're hurt. I'll report it." The RIO replies, a puzzled tone lacing his voice.
"Wait until we've landed, then we can check it out."
As if on cue, I manage to land the plane, the impact sending a violent jolt through my body as I move with the aircraft. Applying the breaks, I allow the plane to slow considerably before taxi-ing towards the hangers. A few attendants rush out to greet us, their helmeted faces covered and unfamiliar as we exit the jet. My mind is still on the object we saw on the mountain, but when I look, I see nothing.
"We saw something, or someone, up on the mountain whilst we were landing." Goose reports to the commander who has just joined us. Raising an eyebrow, he looks sceptical.
"Did you? Sure it wasn't the sun catching off your cockpit?" His gruff voice barks out dismissively.
"We're sure." I retort, quickly adding a "Sir" when I get a stern look.
"Well, wait for the other lieutenants to return, then you can check it out." He sighs, turning away to watch another plane land, "But don't take too long. We need you guys for another theory lesson, later."
"Thank you, sir." Goose and I bark in response.
Impatiently, I watch the jets wheeling around the sky, my mind and body restless in anticipation. A couple come in to land, their small structures skidding to jerky halts on the runway, their engines overheating in the beating warmth of the overhead sun. Only four more to wait for.
Beside me, Goose tugs at the sleeves of his uniform, a sign of his own impatience, though his is less noticeable as he quickly explains to the approaching pilots what we saw. One of them dismisses it, but resignedly says he'll come with us. Smiling dryly, I thank them both, watching the last jets land with mounting excitement as they do so, one by one. I bite my lip as they taxi to a halt, the pilots jumping out and stretching out their cramping muscles before they come over to join us.
We go over to them, Goose once again explaining our intentions to the others, taking in their varying faces of interest, curiosity, dismissal and disbelief. Amongst them, Iceman looks sceptical, his bright eyes focusing on my body language.
"I'll go with you guys." He says briefly, the others quickly agreeing with him.
Together, we turn and walk in the direction of the mountain we saw the flash on, stopping intermittently to allow planes to take off and land, no one speaking to each other until I finally catch sight of something.
There, limping over the coarse ground, is a person, their uniform unmistakeable. A fighter pilot.
Frowning, I squint at them, before my mind recognises the figure, my eyes widening in disbelief.
I break into a run, ignoring the confused shouts of the others as I charge towards the figure, my gaze focused solely on them.
Or rather, my gaze focused solely on her.

Summary: Toni forms an unsuspecting friendship with Christopher that turns into something more. As her feelings towards him continue to grow she starts to unravel the secrets that surround him and in return, he unravels her completely.
Chapter 4: Let the games begin
After the eventful night between Toni and Chris, it was like the days went by rather quickly and before she knew it, Friday was here and Toni’s nerves were coming along for the ride. When she came home that night and told her girls about what transpired with her and the mysterious business mogul they gave out beaming smiles and all three of them jumped around, excited that Toni was going out on a date. And of course, don’t even get her started on Aaliyah, the woman was more than elated, and every chance she got she made sure to bother Toni about her new “boyfriend.”
Toni was walking in from work at Print Monthly and let out a yawn. Working two jobs, and writing a new article was slowly catching up with her, but with enough caffeine, she thinks she could make it through. She took off her heels and placed her keys on the entrance table trying to stifle yet another yawn, that was on its way out of her mouth. As she went further into the apartment she didn’t hear any movement from either of the girl’s rooms so she figured she was home alone. Toni went into her room not caring to turn on the light since she had a small night light in the corner and shut the door. She dropped her purse on the floor and took off her clothes, only leaving on her bra and panties. Toni sighed and shuffled to her bed, face planting into it as she wrapped her sherpa throw around her body. Since the AC was fixed the day before her place was nice and cool and all she wanted to do was take a small nap.
But before she could float away to unconsciousness her door was rushed open and the light flicked on, “Oh no bitch, get up!”
Toni groaned hearing Rocky’s voice and covered her face with the blanket, wishing for a couple of minutes of sleep, “Antonia Kelis Thompson, up now!”
The blanket was ripped away from Toni, and she put her face into the pillow, “Just five minutes,” she groaned.
“No, get up! Sage made you a smoothie to help with your energy before she left for the grocery store and you need to drink it so we can get you together for tonight.”
Toni turned her head and looked at Rocky, she was standing next to her bed with her eyebrow raised and a hand on her hip and the other was outstretched with said green smoothie in her grasp.
“It’s only six Rocky, we meet up at nine.”
True to his word, Chris hit her up and they set up a time and place to meet up, the place being an escape room to which Toni was particularly thrilled about. She had always wanted to go to one and she vaguely remembered mentioning it to him on one of their morning talks at the cafe. After they arranged their night out they continued texting each other throughout the day and it felt good to have that feeling of giddiness whenever she heard her phone ding and it possibly being him.
Toni huffed and sat up, sitting cross-legged on her bed and took the drink from Rocky’s hand. Taking a few sips she scrunched up her face from the taste but soldiered on when she saw the look Racquel gave her. When she finally finished the last bits of the smoothie, she put the glass on her nightstand and turned back to her friend.
“All finished, what’s next on the list warden?”
Racquel rolled her eyes, “So damn dramatic, go take a shower and I’ll dive into that mess you call a closet to find you something to wear.”
Toni stretched her limbs as she stood up from the bed while Rocky shooed her to the bathroom grabbing her towel from the back of the door in the process.
“And don’t forget to shave bitch!” Rocky yelled out.
“I shaved my legs yesterday, why the hell am I going to do them again?” Toni said poking her head out from the doorway, her confusion was evident.
“I’m not talking about your legs, girl,” Raquel said, winking. Toni didn’t plan on sleeping with Chris tonight but with how crazy the attraction was between them anything was possible. So with understanding and gratitude, Toni simply nodded and backed into the bathroom, closing the door and getting to work.
After the long half-hour of exfoliation, shaving, and showering, Toni came out of the bathroom feeling fresh and squeaky clean and walked into the sight of her bed strewn with clothes. She took in the sight of her best friends arguing with a piece of clothing in their hands about which outfit would work best. She chose to ignore them knowing that whatever they picked would be applicable and tightened the towel on her form, going to her vanity to do her makeup and hair. The girls interrupted her a few times showing her what they chose and Sage helped Toni curl her hair in the back. Music and bouts of laughter were heard throughout the home and the minutes ticked by getting closer to when Toni was deemed to leave. She was just putting on her light blue jeans when her phone went off, interrupting the song that was playing on her Bluetooth. Rocky and Sage continued talking about whether she should wear heels or sneakers, and Toni finished buttoning her pants walking over to her device. The name Chris was on her screen, and before the voicemail picked up she answered.
“Hello,” she said.
“There she is, thought you weren’t gonna answer,” Chris’s smooth voice came through the phone, making Toni’s stomach flutter with butterflies. She could vaguely hear noises of machinery in the background but she didn’t think anything of it because as quickly as the noise came it was gone, like he went into a separate room.
“I mean I didn’t have to pick up, especially since you're interrupting me getting ready for my date,” Toni sat down on the bench at the end of her bed.
“Oh, word? Who’s the lucky man?”
Toni looked down at her nails, “Some guy I met a couple of weeks ago, he ain’t all that but I decided to have mercy and give him a chance.”
Chris laughed into the receiver, “I bet he’s hype as fuck to take your pretty ass out.”
Toni shrugged like he could see her, “I mean, I am kind of great.”
“That you are Antonia, that you are.”
Toni covered her mouth with her fingers, trying to control the megawatt smile that was threatening to break out. They knew each other barely a month and already the way Chris made Toni feel was slightly alarming. “Is everything okay though, because if you need to change the time or something that’s fine.”
“Nah we good, just wanted to check up on you. And make sure I wasn’t gonna do an escape room by myself.”
“No worries, I’ll be there,” Toni said grinning.
“Aiight, so I’ll see you soon yeah?”
“Yes, sir nine o’clock.”
Chris chuckled, “Aight mama, later.”
Toni hung up and put her phone back on the charger, “I’m guessing from all the flirting we just heard, that was him,” Sage asked.
She shook her head, “Yeah, he was calling to make sure we were still on tonight.” Toni went and looked at the shoe options they picked out, thankful that her friends lended out a helping hand.
“We think the all-white Nike’s would look great with your outfit. Plus it will give your feet a break from the heels and you can run around as you play the game with your boyfriend,” Rocky smirked when Toni gave her a dirty look at her use of the “B” word.
“I agree,” she told them. After bending down to put her sneakers on, Toni stood up and examined her outfit in the mirror, liking how it looked. The white bodysuit accentuated her curves and the light blue jeans and sneakers really brought everything together, making her feel comfortable but be cute at the same time. Toni sprayed her perfume and got her crossbody bag and phone, listening to her friends give her a pep talk as she walked to the front door.
“We put some wipes in your bag and some mints as well just in case your breath gets hot,” Sage said, following behind Toni.
“Oh yes and some pepper spray if he decides to get handsy,” Raquel continued, bringing up the rear, “You never know he can turn into an asshole when the clock strikes twelve.”
Sage gave Rocky a glare and nudged her, “I doubt it will come to that, Racquel but it is always good to be safe.”
“Yes, it is,” Rocky grumbled, rubbing her sore side. Sage may be small but her elbow had some power behind it.
Toni turned to them when they reached the door, “Thanks guys for all the help.”
“We got your back girl, you know that.”
“And have fun tonight please, you deserve it and it will do you good to get some dick. It might help you stop being so damn uptight.”
“Sage!” Toni gasped, hitting the girl’s arm while Rocky stood next to her nodding in agreeance.
“I can’t stand you guys.” Toni picked up the keys she left on the small table by the door and opened her arms, “Alright give me some loving.”
They all came in for a group hug, just like they always did back in college, “Love you hoes,” Toni murmured.
“We love you too,” Sage and Rocky said together.

Pulling into the parking lot Toni texted Chris letting him know she had arrived and while she waited on his reply she stared down at her phone and went through her social media. Suddenly a knock on her window made her jolt in the seat and look up with a hand to her chest. She let out a breath when she saw it was Chris at her window, his eyebrow raised and his mouth curved into a smirk.
“Geez Chris, you scared the shit out of me,” Toni exclaimed through the closed window.
She reached next to her, to get her purse and took her keys out of the ignition, placing them and her phone into her bag. She unlocked the door and he opened it for her, a smile still residing on his lips, “My bad ma, I didn’t mean to scare you.”
Toni side-eyed him as she got out, “Liar, you know damn well it’s too dark for your ass to be playing games.”
“Oh shit, don’t tell me big bad Antonia is scared of the dark.” Chris closed her car door behind her and Toni hit her key fob locking the vehicle. They began walking through the sparsely lit up parking lot, heading towards the building that had MadeYa Look Escape Room in bright lights at the front.
“Listen, frightening things live in the night, so don’t shame me.”
Chris chuckled as they walked side by side, his hands behind his back, “Nah, no shaming here baby. I used to be the same way, years ago.”
Toni felt a jolt at this new nickname, she hadn’t been called baby from the opposite sex in years and it made her feel warm inside to be hearing it from him. Toni decided to play it cool and not show how much the term of endearment affected her, but she secretly promised herself she would gush about it later in the privacy of her home.
“What made you stop being scared?” Toni asked as they finally reached the entrance.
She went to open the door but his ring covered hand was suddenly on top of hers, making her palm sweat on the cool metal of the handle, “When I became the scary thing to the monsters.”
Toni noticed the sudden shift between them as she gazed into his dark brown orbs. You would think after a statement like that she would be afraid but she felt perfectly fine, safe even. She didn’t know what to think about that, so she intended to not think about it at all.
“I forgot to tell you earlier but you look beautiful,” Chris said, his eyes not leaving hers, he was close enough that he could hear her breath stutter but didn’t comment. Toni bit her lip and pushed a piece of hair behind her ear.
“You got your nose pierced,” she said, surprised. Toni saw the faint glint of the piercing from the glare of the lights and even though she never dated a guy with one it was different and it fit him perfectly.
Chris took note of the change of subject but he nodded anyway and ran his tongue across his bottom lip, making it shine, “You like it?”
“It’s cute,” She said with faux disinterest. Just like last time, with the close proximity they were in Toni could smell his cologne that was dark and subtle. They would kiss if she stood on her tiptoes.
“You ready for me to whoop your ass in this game?” Chris teased, and just like that the spell was broken and the light-hearted flirting came back into play.
Toni scoffed, grateful for the break from the tension “Please, the question is are you ready?”
With her hands still encompassed in his, they both opened the door and went to the front desk to pay and get instructions. The brunette clerk who they later learned was named Debbie was none the wiser to the something that transpired moments before, as she explained rules and questioned which room they wanted to play. While the middle-aged woman was talking, he had his hand rested on the small of Toni’s back and tried as she might she couldn’t focus on anything else but the heat of his palm. Luckily, another couple came in after them and they were able to play against the pair in the zombie apocalypse escape room. Before the game started Toni and Chris set up a bet for whoever solved the most clues even though they were on the same team. Toni ran her hand through her loose curls to put her hair up in a ponytail waiting for the countdown and noticed Chris’s outfit, “You don’t think you’ll get hot running around in your jacket?”
As per usual Chris was clad in all black but he had on a jean jacket over a black shirt this time rather than a regular button-up.
“I’m straight,” Chris said nonchalantly. Before she could interrogate him further, Debbie’s voice came onto the intercom letting them know she was starting the countdown. Quickly, ten seconds turned to one, and the game began.
*****************************************************************************************************
The couple walked out of the room breathless and delighted with how well the game turned out. They beat the newlyweds by a landslide with one minute to spare, and unfortunately to Chris’s exasperation, Toni solved most of the clues and now she had full reign over tonight.
“Congrats guys!” The clerk complimented as she handed them two free t-shirts for winning and even offered to snap a picture of them to put on their winner board. Chris declined grumbling about how he hated taking pictures but of course, when Toni gave him puppy dog eyes and reminded him she was the captain of tonight he grudgingly relented. Only on the grounds of them taking the photo on their personal phones and that Toni promised not to rag on him the rest of the date.
Toni gave the woman her phone already opened to the camera app and they both took their place in front of the winner’s board. She didn’t know where to position herself, not wanting to be too much in Chris’s personal space if he wasn’t comfortable with it, but he made the decision for her when he put his arm on her shoulders and brought her in close, making Toni’s palms sweat. She quickly decided to wrap her arms around his waist praying he couldn’t feel her heart practically beat out her chest when she leaned against his side. They both looked at the camera with big smiles earning an “Awww you two are adorable!” from Debbie.
As Toni went to pull away, she brushed against something solid and what felt oddly like steel under his jacket. Stepping back Toni pondered over the fact that the object that she touched was most likely a gun and that was probably the reason why he didn’t want to take off his jacket before the game.
“Here you go hun,” Debbie said, passing Toni her phone.
Toni graciously thanked her while she took the device and tried to school her features. She knew people had guns, even her father had some locked away at his house but something about him hiding it made her stomach roll.
They went out into the cool night and Toni walked next to Chris quietly still thinking, “So where to boss, since you running shit now.”
A beat passed and she could see Chris in her peripheral take a look at her, wondering why she wasn’t responding.
“You good mama?” He inquired.
She was acting like such a dumb ass, it wasn’t like he was her boyfriend he didn’t have to necessarily tell her why he had a gun and she was fine when he told her the monsters were afraid of him. So why did the gun affect her so much?
Toni looked over at him seeing his brows knitted in worry and decided to push the issue aside for a second. “Yep, but the real question is are you good after that ass whooping I gave you? Mr. I’m gonna win just watch.”
Chris groaned, “I thought you promised you wasn’t gonna flame me.”
“Obviously I lied, I just wanted you to stop whining and take the damn picture.”
“Nah, I just think you wanted a pic so you could look at it and fantasize about me all the time.”
Toni snickered and pushed him, “Please, don’t flatter yourself.”
They were still talking when they finally reached her car. Toni leaned against her door, she could see his Range a couple of spaces from hers. “So what now Antonia?”
He asked while he stood in front of her, his hands in his pockets.
“Not sick of me yet?” Toni wondered, tilting her head.
“Never that darlin’.’”
Toni cleared her throat feeling her cheeks burn, damn him, he knew exactly what the hell he was doing. Not wanting to put it off any longer she made the choice to just ask him about the gun, not wanting to proceed with the night without being in the know. “Can I...ugh this is probably so stupid but can I ask you a question first before we leave here?”
He straightened when he heard the way she stuttered like she was worried about questioning him, “Go ahead.”
Toni crossed her arms, “You can tell me it's none of my business and honestly it’s not that big of a deal but is there a reason why you didn’t want to tell me you were carrying a gun? I felt it while we were taking the picture.”
She was expecting him to get upset about her interrogation but his posture went lax, seeming happy that that was what she wanted to ask.
“I didn’t say anything ‘cause I wasn’t sure if it was gonna freak you out. I use it for protection only and I should have told you instead of assuming.”
Toni sighed and rubbed her forehead, “No, I apologize it just took me by surprise is all. I knew someone that carried and it always seemed like he used it more to showcase how much of a dick he was rather than use it as a safety precaution.”
“Hey,” Chris raised Toni’s chin, making her focus on him. “Don’t ever be scared to ask me somethin’. Even if I don’t like the question, imma always try and give you as much of the truth that I can, aight?”
“Okay,” Toni said.
“Okay,” Chris dropped his hand and grabbed Toni’s holding it in his grasp, still looking at her, “So we gonna chill in this parking lot all night or we gonna go to the next spot?”
Toni lightly squeezed his hand with a mischievous glint in her eye, “I know the perfect place.”
“Aiight then,” Chris walked to the passenger side of her car waiting, “Let’s go.”
“You’re not gonna drive your car?” Toni wrinkled her nose, puzzled whilst unlocking the car.
Chris opened the door and simply said, “Nope I trust you,” before getting into the vehicle leaving Toni speechless.
Toni let out a harsh breath and whispered “This man is too fine,” getting into the car as well. It seemed like their night had only begun.

Middle Passage - Robert Hayden
I
Jesús, Estrella, Esperanza, Mercy:
Sails flashing to the wind like weapons,
sharks following the moans the fever and the dying;
horror the corposant and compass rose.
Middle Passage:
voyage through death
to life upon these shores.
“10 April 1800—
Blacks rebellious. Crew uneasy. Our linguist says
their moaning is a prayer for death,
ours and their own. Some try to starve themselves.
Lost three this morning leaped with crazy laughter
to the waiting sharks, sang as they went under.”
Desire, Adventure, Tartar, Ann:
Standing to America, bringing home
black gold, black ivory, black seed.
Deep in the festering hold thy father lies,
of his bones New England pews are made,
those are altar lights that were his eyes.
Jesus Saviour Pilot Me
Over Life’s Tempestuous Sea
We pray that Thou wilt grant, O Lord,
safe passage to our vessels bringing
heathen souls unto Thy chastening.
Jesus Saviour
“8 bells. I cannot sleep, for I am sick
with fear, but writing eases fear a little
since still my eyes can see these words take shape
upon the page & so I write, as one
would turn to exorcism. 4 days scudding,
but now the sea is calm again. Misfortune
follows in our wake like sharks (our grinning
tutelary gods). Which one of us
has killed an albatross? A plague among
our blacks—Ophthalmia: blindness—& we
have jettisoned the blind to no avail.
It spreads, the terrifying sickness spreads.
Its claws have scratched sight from the Capt.'s eyes
& there is blindness in the fo’c’sle
& we must sail 3 weeks before we come
to port.”
What port awaits us, Davy Jones’
or home? I’ve heard of slavers drifting, drifting,
playthings of wind and storm and chance, their crews
gone blind, the jungle hatred
crawling up on deck.
Thou Who Walked On Galilee
“Deponent further sayeth The Bella J
left the Guinea Coast
with cargo of five hundred blacks and odd
for the barracoons of Florida:
“That there was hardly room ’tween-decks for half
the sweltering cattle stowed spoon-fashion there;
that some went mad of thirst and tore their flesh
and sucked the blood:
“That Crew and Captain lusted with the comeliest
of the savage girls kept naked in the cabins;
that there was one they called The Guinea Rose
and they cast lots and fought to lie with her:
“That when the Bo’s’n piped all hands, the flames
spreading from starboard already were beyond
control, the negroes howling and their chains
entangled with the flames:
“That the burning blacks could not be reached,
that the Crew abandoned ship,
leaving their shrieking negresses behind,
that the Captain perished drunken with the wenches:
“Further Deponent sayeth not.”
Pilot Oh Pilot Me
II
Aye, lad, and I have seen those factories,
Gambia, Rio Pongo, Calabar;
have watched the artful mongos baiting traps
of war wherein the victor and the vanquished
Were caught as prizes for our barracoons.
Have seen the nigger kings whose vanity
and greed turned wild black hides of Fellatah,
Mandingo, Ibo, Kru to gold for us.
And there was one—King Anthracite we named him—
fetish face beneath French parasols
of brass and orange velvet, impudent mouth
whose cups were carven skulls of enemies:
He’d honor us with drum and feast and conjo
and palm-oil-glistening wenches deft in love,
and for tin crowns that shone with paste,
red calico and German-silver trinkets
Would have the drums talk war and send
his warriors to burn the sleeping villages
and kill the sick and old and lead the young
in coffles to our factories.
Twenty years a trader, twenty years,
for there was wealth aplenty to be harvested
from those black fields, and I’d be trading still
but for the fevers melting down my bones.
III
Shuttles in the rocking loom of history,
the dark ships move, the dark ships move,
their bright ironical names
like jests of kindness on a murderer’s mouth;
plough through thrashing glister toward
fata morgana’s lucent melting shore,
weave toward New World littorals that are
mirage and myth and actual shore.
Voyage through death,
voyage whose chartings are unlove.
A charnel stench, effluvium of living death
spreads outward from the hold,
where the living and the dead, the horribly dying,
lie interlocked, lie foul with blood and excrement.
Deep in the festering hold thy father lies,
the corpse of mercy rots with him,
rats eat love’s rotten gelid eyes.
But, oh, the living look at you
with human eyes whose suffering accuses you,
whose hatred reaches through the swill of dark
to strike you like a leper’s claw.
You cannot stare that hatred down
or chain the fear that stalks the watches
and breathes on you its fetid scorching breath;
cannot kill the deep immortal human wish,
the timeless will.
“But for the storm that flung up barriers
of wind and wave, The Amistad, señores,
would have reached the port of Príncipe in two,
three days at most; but for the storm we should
have been prepared for what befell.
Swift as the puma’s leap it came. There was
that interval of moonless calm filled only
with the water’s and the rigging’s usual sounds,
then sudden movement, blows and snarling cries
and they had fallen on us with machete
and marlinspike. It was as though the very
air, the night itself were striking us.
Exhausted by the rigors of the storm,
we were no match for them. Our men went down
before the murderous Africans. Our loyal
Celestino ran from below with gun
and lantern and I saw, before the cane-
knife’s wounding flash, Cinquez,
that surly brute who calls himself a prince,
directing, urging on the ghastly work.
He hacked the poor mulatto down, and then
he turned on me. The decks were slippery
when daylight finally came. It sickens me
to think of what I saw, of how these apes
threw overboard the butchered bodies of
our men, true Christians all, like so much jetsam.
Enough, enough. The rest is quickly told:
Cinquez was forced to spare the two of us
you see to steer the ship to Africa,
and we like phantoms doomed to rove the sea
voyaged east by day and west by night,
deceiving them, hoping for rescue,
prisoners on our own vessel, till
at length we drifted to the shores of this
your land, America, where we were freed
from our unspeakable misery. Now we
demand, good sirs, the extradition of
Cinquez and his accomplices to La
Havana. And it distresses us to know
there are so many here who seem inclined
to justify the mutiny of these blacks.
We find it paradoxical indeed
that you whose wealth, whose tree of liberty
are rooted in the labor of your slaves
should suffer the august John Quincy Adams
to speak with so much passion of the right
of chattel slaves to kill their lawful masters
and with his Roman rhetoric weave a hero’s
garland for Cinquez. I tell you that
we are determined to return to Cuba
with our slaves and there see justice done. Cinquez—
or let us say ‘the Prince’—Cinquez shall die.”
The deep immortal human wish,
the timeless will:
Cinquez its deathless primaveral image,
life that transfigures many lives.
Voyage through death
to life upon these shores.

Whumptober No.5
A cargo box slithered past Rios, and sparks flew from the navigational control as La Sirena took another hit. The ENH flinched but stoically remained at his post. The hull of the ship shuddered. From the lower deck, the smell of molten plastic and hot metal wafted onto the bridge.
“Chesumadre!”
Cursing, Rios furiously worked the controls and eased the rocking ship back into balance while letting it perform a backward flip.
“Emmet! Torpedos! Ahora!”
A screen to his left flickered and died, but, muttering something unfriendly in Spanish, the Emergency Tactical Hologram ignored it. He pushed a series of buttons and stared out the bridge’s panoramic window with unusual alertness. The large Beltranian cruiser that had attacked them was right in front of them now, it’s warp drive within Sirena’s tactical sights.
“Emmett!”
The ETH patiently waited for the holographic crosshairs to lock - and fired. A ball of flames bloomed at the hostile ship’s rear, and the shockwave slammed into La Sirena before Rios could glide his damaged ship out of the danger zone. Alarms blared.
“Ean!” Rios barked into the com. “Is the warp drive still online?”
“Aye, captain,” the engineering hologram responded, voice crackling with static interference, “but I cannae say how much longer. Core temperature is reaching critical levels.”
“Copy that,” Rios responded, biting down on his cigar with fierce determination. “Enoch! Set a course to CentraX343, zeta quadrant!”
“Aye, sir!” In spite of the tense situation, the navigational hologram looked disturbingly thrilled. His fingers flew across his controls.
“Course set and locked, captain.”
In front of them, the cloud of smoke cleared, and the Beltranian ship, somehow still functional, was turning and opening its torpedo launch hatches.
“Caram- Maximum warp!” Rios shouted. “Everybody hold on!”
The ship seemed to freeze for a moment, alarms and hissing sparks and the heat of fire somehow suspended in time, and then Rios was pressed into his seat as the warp drive propelled them into a different corner of the galaxy.
When they slowed, Rios barked at the ETH: “Emmet! Any hostile activity?”
“No. Nada. Estamos solos.”
“Bueno.” Rios exhaled. He pushed out of his Captain’s chair, looking around at his worse-for-wear ship. “Enoch! Damage report!”
The ENH checked his screen with flying fingers. Even over his shoulder, Rios could see several of the readings blinking red.
“Deflector shields are down,” the hologram confirmed. “Aft scanners are malfunctioning. Electricity is down in the mess and starboard quarters. And it looks like Ean has a problem with the warp drive.”
“Qué más…! Ean?!”
“Aye, Captain.”
Something was seriously wrong with Sirena’s com system as well. The engineer’s voice sounded distorted. Rios clenched his jaw around his cigar.
“What’s going on down there, Ean?”
“The warp core is nae cooling down properly, Captain. Scanner shows a short circuit, but I dinna ken- something else is going on.”
Rios sighed.
“Emmet, Enoch?”
The two holographic crew members swung their startingly human gazes around to Rios, one of them infinitely bored, the other one perky.
“I’m going down there myself.” Rios pointed at the metal stairs leading to the lower decks and the engine bay. “You have the bridge. Keep an eye out for hostiles and let me know when we approach Centra.”
The ENH clapped his hands in delight. The ETH yawned.
Rios rolled his eyes.
As he climbed down the stairs, his adrenaline slowly waned, entirely being replaced by a dark anger. It was directed at himself, mostly, for not smelling that something about this commission had been fishy. He should’ve smelled Beltranians behind it. Estúpido. They had betrayed him and damaged his ship. His Sirena. His home. Chewing angrily on his extinguished cigar, he opened the hatch to the engine bay.
A hot, chemical smell hit him. Overheated composite. Scorched circuit boards. Ailing technology.
The EEH was standing by the warp core, running a handheld scanner across the welded seams of the plasma port. Under his woolen cap, sceptically narrowed eyes were trained on the tool’s small screen.
“Did you find the damaged circuit board?” Rios asked.
“I did.” The hologram stood, scratching the back of his head. “But the core temperature is still too high, and I cannae tell wh-“
BOOM!
One of the plasma tanks exploded. Glass flew like bullets, and Rios felt shards embedding themselves in the side of his face and neck when he instinctively turned away from the blast. Beside him, the EEH disintegrated. Plasma rained down, splashing Rios’ left side, the acid burning through his clothes, into his skin. The fumes bit into his lungs when he gasped and fell, hitting a console that he clutched like a life buoy.
Plasma coagulated around Rios in puddles, biting into the floor paneling with a hiss. All he could do was hang on to the console and try to remain on his feet.
The com system crackled to life.
“Ean, que pasa?!"
Emmett.
Rios meant to speak, but all he could manage was a pained gurgle. He couldn’t breathe. His skin was on fire. A thousand blades were stabbing into his arm and side.
“Captain?” Enoch sounded uncommonly concerned now. “Are you alright?”
“No, he’s no’!”
Ean.
He’d flickered back into existence and hit an emergency button. Foam sprayed down and hazmat filters sprang to life.
“Captain!”
A few strides through the chaos, his holographic boots unaffected by the acid, and the hologram was at Rios’ side, grabbing him around the hips to keep him upright.
Rios moaned.
“We need a wee bit o’ help down here,” the EEH shouted. “Where’s Em-?”
“What is the nature of your- …oh no!”
Conjured from thin air, the EMH pulled his hands from his pockets and rushed to Rios’ aid.
Through the pain biting into his face and neck and burning down his arm, Rios wasn’t aware of much else. Breathing hurt. Everything hurt, and he neither had the will nor the strength to ward off the EMH descending on him. He heard the warbling of a tricorder as the EMH fired questions at him that he couldn’t answer. A hypospray was pressed to his neck, and as the pain lost its blinding edge, he felt himself being lifted and carried, fireman-style. When Rios attempted a weak protest, he was shushed by a Scottish burr.
“Dinna fash, Captain. You’ll be right as rain.”
Their trek ended where all days like these seemed to end: with Rios in a biobed, hopped up on the EMH’s hypospray cocktails, medical equipment whirring around him and a smug Emil hovering and fussing. Dropping in and out of consciousness for several... hours?...days?... he once thought he saw Enoch sitting on a stool next to him, blathering cheerfully, and he could have sworn he felt Emmett’s tattoed hand squeezing his arm, but it must have been the drugs. Later, he would remember the engineering hologram stopping by, obviously to fix a technical problem. He even imagined seeing that fucking hospitality hologram sneaking into sickbay with a bouquet of flowers at some point, but when he woke up for good the next time, they were nowhere to be seen. It must have been a hallucination.
When he walked back onto the bridge days later under the observant gaze of the EMH, his crew was at their posts and the ship was in pristine condition. Any damage La Sirena had sustained during the attack had been repaired.
“Welcome back, Captain,” the ENH chirped from his seat at the navigational controls.
Across from him, Emmett stretched with a wide yawn and grunted while Ean emerged from under a console with a screwdriver and a grin on his face.
When Rios sat down in his chair, Steward materialized by his side, handing him a cigar and performing a ridiculous little bow.
“Suficiente!” Rios groaned, grabbing the cigar and angrily waving the EHH away. “You’ve all had your fun! Can we now go back to business?”
In a scarily synchronized gesture, all five holograms put their hands on their hips and shifted their facial features to a reproachful expression.
Rios rolled his eyes.
“Can we now go back to business, please?”
Five heads nodded at him in unison, and, while Rios grumbled something around his cigar, went back to work with deceptively human smirks on their faces.
