Max Verstappen: Graceland by Paul Simon - As a fan of classic and folk rock, I'd imagine Max has been exposed to Simon and Garfunkel and I think he'd enjoy the sprawling, detailed, careful expanse of Simon's solo masterpiece. Angels in the architecture spinning in infinity, etc etc

Checo Perez: Ramomex by Rebel'd Punk - One of the Mexican bands who pioneered punk music in the country, but Checo probably missed this release because he was too busy karting and moving to europe as a teen. It's never too late to have a proper angry punk phase, though.

Charles Leclerc: Ten Love Songs by Susanne Sundfør - Groundbreaking, life-altering pop music that pushes every boundary. This hits the sad songs craving and I think would interest him as a musician and burgeoning songwriter.

Carlos Sainz: Ultraviolence by Lana Del Rey - daddy issues. I just know he'd vibe out to Brooklyn Baby.

Lando Norris: Destiny by DJ Sabrina the Teenage DJ - I dream of sitting him down and exposing him to actually good, interesting, fun contemporary dj music.

Oscar Piastri: Speaking in Tongues by Talking Heads - He has that certain David Byrne swag and demeanor of someone who'd love the Talking Heads if only given the chance.

Fernando Alonso: 10,000 gecs by 100 gecs - At first the old man would be extremely confused but once he was on board he would be blasting The Most Wanted Person In The United States all day every day.

Lance Stroll: Talon of the Hawk by The Front Bottoms - that post that's like the problem is men are making podcasts instead of forming midwest emo bands. but it's men are becoming f1 drivers instead of forming midwest emo bands. I think some TFB exposure could be the spark of inspiration for a great career pivot.

Lewis Hamilton: Maps by billy woods and Kenny Segal - I fear Lewis might have been too worried about Merc's performance last year to have checked out this fantastic collaboration that was one of 2023's best albums.

George Russell: Contra by Vampire Weekend - I just saw Vampire Weekend live following the release of the new album and at the show there was a guy a few feet ahead of me in the merch line who had the exact same energy as GR. The mix of prep vibes and world music would work into his taste while expanding his listening beyond coldplay.

Yuki Tsunoda: GLOW ON by Turnstile - 100% a selfish pick, I want to mosh with Yuki in the pit of a Turnstile pit.

Daniel Ricciardo: The Panhandlers by The Panhandlers - A country supergroup I return to time and again, wistful and nostalgic, making you yearn for West Texas no matter where in the world you are.

Alex Albon: Pelican West by Haircut 100 - Funky British jazz pop, perfect for dancing and vibing.

Logan Sargeant: Crying, Laughing, Waving, Smiling by Slaughter Beach, Dog - I fear Logie might be too young or too norm core to have had a proper Modern Baseball phase (it's never too late logie! listen to Intersection!) but Ewald's 2023 offering seems like something he missed last year that's perfectly up his alley.

Valtteri Bottas: Merriweather Post Pavillion by Animal Collective - Weird and complex, I think he should throw it on while on a long bike ride and let his mullet fly in the breeze.

Zhou Guanyu: God Save the Animals by Alex G - no you don't understand i need him to listen to Alex G he would love it

Kevin Magnussen: Heaven or Las Vegas by Cocteau Twins - Ethereal music he can feel and let wash over him in a wave to relax and transcend the horrors of driving for Haas.

Nico Hulkenberg: Supernatural by Santana - dad music but make it funky and good

Pierre Gasly: Sex Dreams and Denim Jeans by Uffie - A perfect twist on early 2000s French electronic music, I think it'd remind him of the club while sounding entirely new and make him want to pick up a side dj gig of his own.

Esteban Ocon: Lescop by Lescop - French indie pop-rock! His most recent album is fantastic, but Este should check out Lescop's 2013 debut first.

Synopsis: Rei is curious about kissing and goes to Kazuki for help learning.

The credits rolled on the movie Miri had picked out. They had been making their way through a collection of Princess movies for the past couple weeks. Neither Rei or Kazuki had seen any of them before, so they sometimes found themselves just as invested as Miri. Tonight’s movie was a modern adaptation of Rapunzel. It was a bit longer than most of the others had been, so Miri had fallen asleep in Kazuki’s lap about ¾ of the way through.

“I think that was my favorite one so far.” Kazuki said. He really did enjoy it, the characters were funny and the music was good. Not to mention the animation was really pretty. “Did you like it?” He asked Rei.

“Mmhm.” Rei was sitting on the other side of the couch with his knees pulled to his chest. He stared at the credits rolling on the screen.

“That one scene with the lanterns was really cool, and for once I actually liked her love interest,” Kazuki chuckled. Rei nodded, though it didn’t seem like he was really listening. “Yo, Earth to Rei?” Kazuki reached over and gently poked him in the shoulder.

“Sorry.” Rei glanced at him before looking down at his hands. He seemed like he was lost in thought

“Hey…It’s fine. What’s bothering you?” Kazuki asked in a much softer voice. Rei sighed, knowing Kazuki had seen right through him. He began picking at the dark blue polish Miri had painted on his nails a couple days ago.

“Why is there always a big dramatic kiss in these movies?” he mumbled.

“Huh? I don’t know… It’s just an easy way to show people are in love I guess?” Kazuki said slowly, trying to decipher what Rei was getting at. “Do you not want Miri watching stuff with kissing in it—“

“No that’s not it. Um…” Rei trailed off and rested his forehead on his knees. Kazuki watched him, patiently waiting for Rei to find the words. “I’m curious if I’m…missing out” it took Kazuki a moment to process what Rei meant.

“Rei…have you never kissed anyone?” Kazuki asked gently. Rei shook his head.

“Never really saw the point, but it seems like in every movie they make such a big deal about it. But I don’t know how to do it or who I’d...” Rei trailed off again and turned his head away. Kazuki couldn’t help but chuckle a bit at how shy he was being about this.

“It’s not hard dude. Plus, you’re an objectively attractive guy. If you actually went out you’d have no problem finding a girl willing to kiss you, or a guy if that’s what you’re into.” Kazuki said.

Rei took a deep breath and raised his eyes to meet Kazuki’s. “Can you show me what it’s like?”

“Show you what— Wait! Are you asking me to kiss you?” Kazuki stammered. Rei looked back down sheepishly.

“You don’t have too. I’d just rather try it with someone I trust. And I trust you…” Rei said in a voice barely above a whisper. This was clearly bothering him a lot, and Kazuki wanted to help. Besides, it was just a kiss, he had done a lot more than kiss people for jobs before.

“Sure. Why not?” Kazuki laughed, trying to ease some of Rei’s tension.

“Really?” Rei’s eyes snapped up to him.

“Yeah. Let me just put Miri to bed.” Kazuki said with a smile. He gingerly picked her up. “Be right back.” He added before carrying her to her room.

He slowly laid Miri down on her bed. She didn’t even stir as he tucked her in. Kazuki took a moment to linger and watch her sleep, self doubt creeping into his mind. Was this really a good idea? What if it makes things awkward? Then he remembered that this was Rei. Even if they both hated it, or if one of them liked it but not the other, Kazuki knew that it would take a lot more than that to drive a wedge between them.

Feeling reassured, Kazuki gave Miri a little peck on the forehead before going back out to the living room. Rei was pacing back and forth in the kitchen waiting for Kazuki to return. As soon as Kazuki rounded the corner, Rei walked up to him, stopping when they were about a foot away from each other.

Rei was a highly skilled assassin who had stared death in the face countless times without flinching, yet as he looked at Kazuki, he started to shake.

Pffft…he’s so nervous… it’s kind of cute. Kazuki thought to himself. Rei reached out and grazed Kazuki’s sweater with his fingertips, unsure of where to place his hand. Kazuki gave him a reassuring smile, but Rei averted his eyes. It seemed like a million thoughts were going through his head as his cheeks got more and more pink.

“I can lead if you want,” Kazuki offered, feeling warmth creeping into his own face.

“NO!” Rei said sharply, turning his head away. He was trembling even more now. Kazuki began to worry that Rei was psyching himself out too much.

“Rei…You don’t have to do this if you don’t want to. It’s okay” Kazuki said softly.

“I’m fine!” Kazuki was about to argue that Rei didn’t seem fine when Rei turned back to him and clumsily clasped his face with both hands. Kazuki’s eyebrows raised in surprise at his sudden boldness “I’m fine.” Rei repeated, mostly to himself, as he looked at Kazuki’s mouth. Kazuki’s heart beat faster and faster the longer he stared

Then Rei tilted his head up to meet Kazuki’s eyes. The tips of their noses brushing against each other. “Just…stay like this,” He requested, his hands inched down Kazuki’s neck.

Holy shit… Something about the determined but vulnerable look on Rei’s face set Kazuki’s insides ablaze. He never realized just how gorgeous Rei’s stormy blue eyes were, and his skin was so soft…so warm. I wonder if his lips are this soft. Almost as if he was in a trance, Kazuki reached up and traced his finger along the corner of Rei’s mouth. Rei let out a little gasp and put his hand on Kazuki’s chest.

That sound. That little fucking sound he made just about drove Kazuki to the edge of madness. It was sexy. He wanted to see what other sounds he could make Rei make. Kazuki had been with his fair share of people, but he never wanted somebody more than he wanted Rei right now.

His fingers tangled in Rei’s hair as he cupped the side of his head and pulled him closer. It took every shred of self control to not devour Rei right then and there, but Kazuki reminded himself that Rei had never done this before and was nervous as hell, so he stopped himself an inch away from Rei’s lips. He closed his eyes to resist the magnetic force of Rei’s gaze.

“Whenever you’re ready.” Kazuki whispered, though every second of waiting was agony. Rei’s breath ghosted across his lips and sent jolts of electricity up and down his spine.

After what felt like an eternity (but was probably only a moment), Rei finally closed the distance. Kazuki couldn’t help but let out a soft groan at the feeling of Rei’s lips on his. It was too much and not enough all at the same time. Kazuki never thought a chaste kiss like this could feel so euphoric.

Although the absolute last thing Kazuki wanted to do was stop, he realized Rei had been fairly stiff this whole time, so he pulled back to check in.

“You alright?” Kazuki exhaled.

Rei stared up at him, eyes wide and starstruck. He nodded slowly. God he’s adorable. Kazuki thought to himself. “Can we…do that again?”

“Hell yeah.” Kazuki said in a husky voice before diving in and kissing him again. Rei smiled against his lips and wrapped his arms around Kazuki’s neck. Kazuki responded by putting his hands on Rei’s waist and pulling their bodies flush together. Now that he had seen this side of Rei, he couldn’t get enough.

• 100% likes bands like nickelback , three days of grace, etc in private !!!

Animal

• I think he has a very gentle side to his personality, he collects stuffed animals for comfort + he sleeps with all of them on hard nights where he can’t explain what he’s feeling.

• obviously, he loves doing silly, wild things, I think when he was growing up, Floyd might’ve taken him rock climbing to get some energy out!

• enjoys weighted blankets. No further explanation.

• obvi ( canon ) gives gifts of affection with objects, but I think he also draws for them <33!!

But let's go through bands and artists I've not posted about before.

Two Door Cinema Club Just out of statistics. I can prove I played I Can Talk over a hundred times and I can tell you any number under two hundred is underselling it. There is genuinely some problem with my brain that that intro slots into perfectly.

Oh also all the rest of their first album this comes from is this great too, and if you ask me what a perfect album sounds like I will tell you it's not that far off their second album.

OK Go Now, I like the music. Actually, I'd left my two guitars alone for years until an easy OK Go song made me think "Oh, maybe I can play this" and realize that rather than -as I had prior- just play the music I'd been taught I could actually teach myself to play the music I was listening to, which snowballed into playing more OK Go songs and then it expanded and now I have a ukulele, a bass, a third guitar I need to merge with that bass (it's complicated), a fourth "guitar" (it's complicated) on the way, a Casio calculator/synth (it's complicated), a melodica, a launchpad and a kazoo. Whoops. But really, all you need to be sold on OK Go is see two of their videos. One to find out what they're like (and you're already good on that front because you have visited the internet ever and have thus seen Here It Goes Again aka "The Treadmill Video" aka what when posted to YouTube upon its CEO begging them became the biggest video of all time) and another to find out that no the first one was not a one-off fluke. I am serious, go click that link, it takes you to a playlist of their videos and each one is crazier than the last. I mean they played a song with a car. A song. That has a guitar solo. With a car. Have you seen the name of this channel.

Ah, right, the name of this channel. I guess I have to say a thing about that car now. Uhhh this video was sponsored by Chevrolet to promote the Aveo which, despite being badged as a Chevrolet, like many of the more Europe-oriented Chevrolets was made by the automotive branch of Daewoo, brand General Motors picked up after the Daewoo conglomerate (then the second largest in South-Korea which may as well be called Samsungland) went bankrupt in '99 over almost $90B modern dollars in debt. Its founder Kim Woo-chong (because Lord knows the "woo" in Daewoo did not stand for "woo what a great car") earned a ten year sentence, but I feel they focused too much on the wrong guy. The REAL criminal is whoever penned Daewoo cars.

A good person doesn't do this on purpose.

Owl City I have too few of his songs, but I absolutely love how comically upbeat he is. He is so precious. If c: walked this Earth. I mean "Golf and alcohol don't mix and that's why I don't drink and drive / Because, good grief, I'd knock out my teeth and have to kiss my smile goodbye". Protect this man at all costs. Also one time I saw the Fireflies video after what must have been a good decade and you know when you feel near crying? I adored that song when I was a kid and I was right.

Liquido European one-hit wonders - and not even "people know them just for one song", not even "people don't know them and just know the song"; I found you can tell people the name of their hit and they won't know what you're talking about. But hum the riff and infallibly, invariably any single person in my country (and, in my limited experience, the rest of Europe) will go "Ooooooh, that one". And to be fair, those guys did stumble on one of the most memorable riffs in modern history.

Not saying this is a hidden gem of a band, I am sure some bigger music nerd would stamp a big fat "SEEN BEFORE" on all their stuff, beyond some enjoyable splashes of "I wonder how much of this is them leaning into it" cheese (yes, even more than that video) - but I've still got their whole discography including all the B-sides, because to me, so what? It's good music and I'll treat it like it. What's the point of praising "groundbreaking", "genre defining" works and then glossing over those inhabiting the ground they broke and making the genres they defined? When I eat bread I don't complain that it doesn't innovate or set itself apart from the rest of the genre, so as long as my music doesn't bore me why should those be problems there? I feel like people have a problem in general separating their enjoyment of a work from its artistic merit. I'm digressing.

The Beatles If you ask me "What's your favorite number of pant legs?" I'm not going to answer five because two would be cliché.

And now we get to the final answer, the real answer, in such a league of its own it deserves to be separated from the rest via a Read More.

I lied, this is under a Read More because it's an entire fucking dissertation. Your fault for asking.

Caparezza I've spent well over a decade of my life mulling over his lyrics to the point me and my ex-flatmate played this game where she told me a random word and I'd try to find it in his lyrics (e.g. the first word of your ask, "favorite", was used in the second verse of the sixteenth track of his sixth album, yes I am neurodivergent why do you ask), and still it happens that as I am going through my everyday life I happen to accrue some information and slam my forehead going "Oh my God THAT'S what he meant there". His songs are more layered, more deep, more thoughtful, more cutting, more witty, more clever than most prose you see around and still he manages to play with his words and rhymes with incredible dexterity.

Take his last record, Exuvia - actually, take the previous record Exuvia picks up from, Prisoner 709:

Its name not only introduces the theme of imprisonment, but also of dilemmas and juxtapositions, since the prisoner's number, 709, stands for the dilemma about the number of the record: it's the 7th in his discography as Caparezza, but the 9th if one also counts the two shit records he made under his previous name Mikimix (we don't talk about those). Its tracklist, indeed, while being as typical for him incredibly varied in topics (from religions to his affinity with Ludwig II of Bavaria to "I'm not [x], BUT-" types) is arranged as chapters of a journey through an imprisonment (The Crime, The Punishment, The Weight, The Psychologist, The Letter, The Visit, The Yard Time, The Torture, The Revolt, The Guard, The Infirmary, The Window, The Evasion, The Hiding) and associated to dilemmas - for instance, as the record is about his feeling imprisoned in his body and in his role, the first song -and first chapter, The Crime- is indeed Prosopagnosia (i.e. face blindness), a track about him no longer recognizing himself in the artistic reputation he built himself, with the dilemma being between "Michele", his name, and "Caparezza", his rap name. Oh, and if you also want a taste of the impressive wordplay, well, count the letters of those two names. Yep. Every single one of the 16 tracks is a dilemma is between a 7 letter word and a 9 letter word. Because of course it is.

So now, let's get to the last record, Exuvia.

Nah, the pop-up edition's cover fucks way harder.

That's more like it.

Exuvia is the exoskeletal remains left behind by ecdysozoans after ecdysis, i.e. when creatures like insects and crustaceans develop a new exoskeleton and crawl out of their old one, as this record starts from his escaping from the anguish compounded through all his previous records and through a deep analysis of his past, his self, his surroundings, his fate, condensing it all and moving on to a new self, a new birth, a new shell. (Understand how I feel when people say the greatest rapper of all time is one whose greatest record is called "Damn" because the songs made him go "Damn" and whose biggest song is "Biggie Smalls' Juicy but this time about me".)

Well, in the second track of it, about running away from the dire situation of hatred, decay and persecution described in the first track, he says, and I paraphrase,

I give it all up, I'm dying, I retreat - Caporetto plus Waterloo Dripping and smelling like my head was in a station's toilet- oh.

introducing the desperation and hopelessness of military defeats and immediately following it up with an image whose comedic nature makes a contrast so stark as to surprise even him while still, being a reference to the military's hazing and bullying, latching back to the line before. While the prose I represent it with is deliberately poor, the concept behind the words is brilliant enough that it would be a good line if it didn't rhyme at all. And yet the original lines rhyme for twenty syllables. TWENTY.

Thing is, you can be as clever as you want, but the underlying music, you know, it can't be clever, it can just be good or bad. One would think. And yet the music is not just good but full of clever, witty samples and ideas that don't just reinforce the track's mood but tie the instrumental inextricably into the lyrics' themes, like Larsen (the track about his tinnitus, which he calls by audio feedback's technical name of Larsen effect) using high-pitched synths and emphasizing cymbals, Prisoner 709's title track being 79bpm (I wager 709bpm was a bit non-doable), House Credibility's instrumental featuring intercom buzz and cowbells reminiscent of cookware, or, well, everything in Exuvia's second single. See, that song is about the choice he faces between the story of Beethoven, who despite all his challenges kept devoting himself to music until the day he died, or that of Mark Hollis, lead of Talk Talk, who despite all the fame peaced out to focus on his private life - and the entire instrumental is devoted to that concept: the verses' reference Für Elise, the chorus Such A Shame, and the bridge I Believe In You; and when you tun into the background choirs you find they are rhythmically repeating "I don't know".

You start to get a clue why there's three years between his records.

So if his songs are so fucking good, why is he not famous? Well, he is! Except for his first album which no one really noticed (fairly so in my opinion - while I like a few songs I feel he really got going in his second one), the following records did really well for someone with such dense content: his third record has been certified gold! And all the others platinum. Some twice. Never since the first one did a record of his peak under 5 in the charts, and he's got 8 gold singles, 3 platinums and a double platinum. And don't get me started on the shows.

(That's me in the background!) Hell, he's even been on the cover of Billboard! So why've you never heard of him? Well, see the word next to Billboard.

Yep. The man, Michele Salvemini, is an Italian born and raised and, like any proper Italian, doesn't speak a whole lot of English, so pretty much all the English you'll hear in his music are the handful of English features, like Michael Franti, DMC (!) and Spandau Ballet's Tony Hadley, with which he made a song about Italy's emigration crisis.

Emigration that is also internal, from the underdeveloped, falling aparty and criminality-run south of Italy to where all the industries are, the richer and we-pretend-it's-not-criminality-run north. And since he's from Apulia, Italy's heel (his rap name in fact means "curly head" in Apulian dialect), he's made a song about its woes too, featuring the music of the tarantella, Apulia's traditional dance. (I don't know why y'all add an A in front. It's fucking "Puglia", y'all.) Here's an imperfect translation with a couple of helpful explainers to the asterisked terms over in the video's description.

It depresses me every time I think about it that all the English speakers I know will never be able to fully appreciate his lyrical brilliance. But oh well. At least y'all can appreciate the music... so fuck it, have that song whose music I yapped about so much. You'll hear the choirs in the background say "non so" (I don't know)... and a bunch more Italian words (translated here for those on desktop who want to follow along).

guys I have a confession to make. For a long while I havent considered myself an UNDEADP bc when I first started liking Enstars I was not fond of Kaoru. Then his development grew on me but I was already producing another unit so I didn’t feel like producing two units so I became a ReiP instead. But I’ve always had such a soft spot for UNDEAD anyways bc like 1) I tend to like idol anime units with their aesthetic (guilty kiss, fantome iris, roselia etc) 2) I also love their music and listen to it the most even tho Valkyrie is my favourite music wise 3) It’s hard being a ReiP and ignoring his unit, unless you’re an OddballsP but even then most OddballsP I have seen that have Rei as a favourite tend to like UNDEAD anyways

I try to collect Ryuseitai cards though! My 5* collection is bigger. Chiaki fills me feelings of euphoria but his fs2 didn’t come home so now I am sad. Hence why my blog name is SADNESS

Now looking at my UNDEAD collection, I lowkey wish I played their events more :( I tried getting Koga in september but I got too tired and stopped after getting Midori.

Sorry to my followers. tumblr user reisakumaproducer was not always an UNDEADP but oh dear heavens does she have a soft spot for those guys. Someday I want to read every UNDEAD story out there and write analyses of them. Ik that sounds silly but I want to consume UNDEAD content more bc I have yet to read all their stories. Unfortunately I have school but someday I will fulfil my wishes. I think I am entering my UNDEADP era

Winter 2023 Anime Season

Here’s what I’m watching:

Buddy Daddies is easily my favorite new show this season. Following a pair of skilled but unlucky hitmen (Kazuki and Rei) who end up taking in and attempting to raise a little girl they just orphaned (Miri), the show is primarily a comedy. The humor mostly comes from watching two people who are woefully ill equipped to deal with a child having to work through the day to day challenges of caring for a little girl, from finding a good daycare to figuring out how to dress her. These mundane objectives are made hilarious through the lens of these guys being literal assassins. They go from shootouts to making dinner for their daughter. The show also sneaks in some truly heartwarming moments, as well as truly traumatic ones. Both Kazuki and Rei have tragic backgrounds that explain why they can’t just abandon Miri. The relationship between the two men is fun and interesting. While a lot of viewers are hoping for a romance between them, I just don’t see it happening. So far I’ve yet to see a single hint that the story will go that direction. Don’t get me wrong, I would love to see it, but I’m afraid there’s going to be a lot of disappointed fans at the end of the season. Other than that, the show has decent animation and excellent character designs (Just look at Rei when he’s in assassin mode. Just. Look. At. Him.), as well as fun peppy music. The series overall is just super watchable. There’s not a moment in any episode that I’m not entertained. Highly recommended.

The Tale of Outcasts follows a young orphan girl named Wisteria who can see a powerful demon named Marbas, a rare ability among humans. Marbas is immortal, very old, and very bored, so he decides to take Wisteria along with him to travel around the country, meeting other demons along the way as well as avoiding powerful demon hunters sent by the church to destroy him, one of them being Wisteria’s long lost older brother Snow. This show is a bit more light hearted and mild than I expected at first. It does have serious or darker moments, but overall the stakes don’t feel incredibly high at any given time. The charm of this story centers on the relationship between Wisteria and Marbas. Both care very much for each other, and thankfully (so far) the age difference prevents it from becoming a romance. If anything, Marbas takes an almost fatherly role with Wisteria, even if he sometimes forgets how fragile humans are and unintentionally puts Wisteria in danger. It’s a soft, sweet relationship that carries the series on its back. The animation is fine, nothing special, and the design work is pretty good. In particular, the demons all have cool designs. I’m not crazy about the music but that’s a small quibble. Recommended.

High Card is an energetic action series set in a fictional modern kingdom where 52 special playing cards give people super powers. These cards were accidentally (?) scattered across the kingdom, one of which lands in the possession of a young thief named Finn. After getting drawn into a battle for possession of another card between rival groups seeking to collect them, Finn is recruited to join High Card, an organization trying to gather all the cards for the king. This is a very colorful, vibrant series with a fun setting, exciting battles, and excellent visuals. The characters are cool, especially Wendy, a somewhat shy and mousy young woman who turns into a batshit crazy, unstoppable killing machine when she uses her card, and Chris, the flippant ladies’ man who is rendered immortal by his card’s ability (and there’s obviously more to him than meets the eye). The animation is slick. The music is, in my opinion, the best of the season (both the opening and ending themes are absolute bangers). Honestly, if not for Buddy Daddies, this would have easily been my favorite new show of the season. The show has a generally light hearted vibe but they’ve thrown at least one episode at us to prove how serious and dark the story can get. Highly recommended.

Bungou Stray Dogs has a new season (I think it’s season four?) and like with a previous season, it opened with a mini arc that’s entirely comprised of a flashback. This is something not every show can get away with, but Bungou Stray Dogs pulls it off. This flashback deals with the creation of the Armed Detective Agency, a group of “gifted” (people with special powers) agents who work with the government to neutralize threats, most often involving other “gifted” folks. When the season’s actual plot kicks in following the flashback, it’s about the Agency being framed for horrific crimes and being pursued by powerful government-sponsored hunters. The strength of this series has always been its ability to balance its genuinely funny humor with the darker, more violent aspects of its plots. It does both things so well, and manages to overlap them without one aspect distracting too much from the other (something a lot of stories, anime or otherwise, struggle to do). This season might just be the darkest yet, with each new nightmarish development making the situation more and more bleak for the Detective Agency. The animation remains polished and the design work attractive and interesting. If you watched previous seasons, you’re definitely already watching this. If you haven’t, this is a great time to catch up.

Revenger follows a group or mercenaries who take jobs killing targets as revenge for people who can’t afford to hire hitmen, charging only a single coin that has been bitten into, to display the rage of the person who was wronged. A skilled but stoic samurai named Raizo joins them after they get involved in a plot by his lord that tricked him into killing his fiancé’s father. While they’re definitely a group of killers, there’s a lot of moral variety among the group, with some seeming to enjoy the kills while others simply want to see the guilty punished. It’s an interesting mix of personalities. There’s an overarching plot about a giant stash of opium hidden somewhere in the city and corrupt government officials, but the show is best when focusing on stand alone stories of random people needing revenge. The animation is decent and the character designs are varied and attractive, particularly the leader of the group Yuen. The backgrounds are especially nice, with lovely colors and lighting. The music is quite good too. It’s not my favorite show this season, but it has a solid spot on my watch list.
