Weird-eyed strawberry squid

MBARI researchers caught a glimpse of a bright red squid with peculiar peepers. The strawberry squid (Histioteuthis heteropsis) had one large bulbous yellow eye, while the other was small and black.

It was a little crowded at the fish port. So here’s a little color study of some Mayamaya on display.

EDIT:

They’re actually called Bukaw-bukaw according to my parents lmao. They also said the fish got its name because of the eyes. They’re huge just like an owl’s and in Hiligaynon owls = bukaw. The fish is also a fave of my lolo’s and tita to grill/sugba.

I have gone 4? 5? Days without drawing digitally. This was a mistake. My art is flimsy and sad and changes at the slightest inconvenience (this is definitely not reflection of me :( no sir) so there are some changes to the way I drew them. *shrugs*
