Brains are fucking ridiculous
I just realised why I have trouble enjoying all live-action/podcast fiction except for rpg fiction
My asshole brain is so fucking bad at object permanence; that if the actor is good at their job, and I see them in Anything Else, I get nauseous.
My goddamn toddler brain Can't Handle 2 characters in completely different worlds having the same face or voice
And the reason I can handle rpg fiction (like DnD etc) is because I can clearly see/hear people being themselves and actively pretending to be their character. There's a clear divide between fiction and reality
It's also part of the reason (alongside hyper empathy) why I have trouble watching/reading/listening to fictional media more than once. Because I know whats gonna happen, and I can't handle seeing/hearing a person react to horrible things in such a realistic way without wanting to vomit.
So yeah
Hyper empathy and faulty object permanence
Brains are fucking ridiculous

So you're an adult who wants to start reading for fun, but you don't know where to start
I'm a librarian, and I hear at least once a week from people who sheepishly tell me that they'd love to start reading for fun (for the first time or after a long break). Here's my best advice broken down into bullet points, but start here: there is no shame in being a beginner.
-Think about what you do enjoy and start from there. So you're not a book person. Do you like movies? Television? Podcasts? Music? Tabletop games? Video games? What other media do you like and what does it have in common? Make a little list and Venn diagram that shit.
Maybe you're into stories about fucked-up families (Sharp Objects, Succession) or found families (lots of realplay TTRPG podcasts, Leverage, Avatar: The Last Airbender) or fucked-up found families (various Batman media, Steven Universe, The Good Place). Maybe you mainly watch or listen to stuff for the romance (Taylor Swift music, The Best Man, Heartstopper) or the sci-fi horror (The Magnus Archives, M3gan, Nope) or the romantic sci-fi horror (Welcome to Night Vale). And hey, maybe you're not a fictional media person at all. What do you like? What do you want to know about? World history? True crime? Home improvement? Birdwatching? Gardening? Various animals and their behavior? Human psychology? Cooking? If it's a thing, there are books about it. Start there.
Think about why you started to dislike reading. Did an adult snatch a book you thought looked cool out of your hands and say "Don't read that, it's below your reading level/above your reading level/a comic, not a real book"? Did school give you an endless parade of miserable, bleak books and tell you they were universal stories about the human condition? Or did it maybe only give you stories with saccharine, unearned happy endings, or only show you stories about straight cis wealthy abled white kids, or keep you from reading entire books at all in favor of endlessly dissecting tiny passages out of context? (For some vindication, check out "How Teachers Make Children Hate Reading" by John Holt.) Did you have an older sibling or a friend who was better at reading? Did adults put you in competition with that other kid and make you feel like shit about it? Were you in a situation where you were good at reading in one language, or even more than one, but required to read in another that you were still learning? Did this make you feel like you were "behind schedule" or like you shouldn't read at all? Or was reading just harder for you than it seemed for other people? Did reading give you headaches? Did the letters or numbers seem to float around on the page? Was it hard for you to focus for long enough to get through a whole book? Did you need to learn to read differently than the kids around you could? Did adults punish you for this instead of helping you? (Look, I'm not a doctor, but if any of these apply to you, consider going to an optometrist, a psychologist, and/or a psychiatrist to talk about these things if they're persistent and interfere with your life.) Or maybe you're burned out on reading. Maybe you did an advanced degree in literature or writing or history or some other reading-heavy discipline and you're just tired. Maybe your professors or classmates got snobby about what constituted "literary" works and their good opinion didn't line up with what you actually enjoy. You get to be sad and angry about these things, if they happened to you. They're also clues to how to move forward if you'd like to read more, or enjoy reading more.
Give yourself permission to read whatever you want, in whatever way you want. Wanna start with young adult books? Middle grade books? Awesome. Many of them have stories that are sophisticated and complex. Starting with re-reading the first books you enjoyed reading could help jog your memory about why you initially found it fun. Hell, even picture books are a good start. Have you read a picture book lately? Those things are getting cooler every day. Comics and graphic novels? Those count as reading. Many of them are published for adults, though again, the ones published for a middle-grade or young adult audience are often complex and moving. If you're an anime fan, give manga a shot. The source material for many anime go deeper into the characters and stories, especially now that anime seasons are often truncated to 12 episodes for entire series. (The right-to-left thing is easier to get used to than you think, too.) Romance novels and mystery thrillers and science fiction and fantasy? Those count as reading. Many of the things you might have liked about the books you read as a child or a teenager are present in adult "genre" fiction, and many of the things you might despise about adult "literary" fiction (god, I hate that word, but that's another post) may be absent from those titles. E-books and audiobooks definitely count as reading, and they're often more accessible than paper books for some people. Anybody who tries to genre- or format-shame you is a dick and not worth talking to.
Go to your local library. All right, shameless self-promotion here, I'll admit it. But I promise you, if you walk into a library and say "I'm an adult, I stopped reading a while ago, and I'd like to start back up again but I need suggestions," you will make someone's day. I get asked for my opinion about books approximately once a month. I get asked how to use the printer approximately eighty-five times a day. I love helping with the printer and I'm saying that unironically, but my colleagues and I absolutely adore "readers' advisory" questions. If you come with the answers to the above questions about your preferred genres, formats, and reasons you'd like to read, it'll help the process, but most of us are trained to ask follow-up questions to get you the best possible book match. Do not apologize. You are not bothering us. It is literally part of our job. We want people to know that reading is fun, and you are a people.

okay only semi-related to this page, but I've been listening to a dnd realplay podcast and while I was drawing this page, the players decided to try meeting up with an NPC behind a waterfall (yanno, for cool waterfall aesthetic), but then decided it would be funnier if there was barely any room for anyone behind the waterfall so they're just getting pelted by the water. anyway that's what's been living in my head rent free

modern au where steve always turns dustin down when asked to join a campaign not because he's uninterested but because he doesn't have time as he's actually part of a realplay podcast
steve is responsible for updating the patreon and managing merch and con appearances
the reason dustin doesn't know is because steve is absolutely a "you never asked" kind of person
(the podcast is steve, robin, and jonathan, with argyle as gm. it's chaotic with lots of queer rep)
(steve could probably find the time but he prefers focusing on one campaign at a time. maybe next time the podcast is between seasons, he'll agree to join hellfire for a bit. and finally meet eddie.)
(eddie absolutely listens to the podcast and does not know dustin's steve is that steve)

6, 7, 19, 25, 29 >:) give me your secrests
(context)
someone beat u to 6 in fact! as for the rest...
7. A medium of art you don't work in but appreciate
how about two; watercolor and fursuiting. i think watercolor’s gorgeous but its something i could not possibly abide doing myself; its too imprecise and relies on timing and you can’t edit it midway or think too hard about it and it also uses a brush.
fursuiting fascinates me as an art but i definitely appreciate it most from a “oh my god giant stuffed animal” perspective LMAO. i want miniature ones as plushies. i love the styles people develop with em
19. Favorite inanimate objects to draw (food, nature, etc.)
buildingsss and city streets!! to be fair i actively dislike greebling buildings but i Love drawing shit in perspective. mmmm.
on a smaller scale im a big fan of the guns ive put together for my ocs (tho only those LMAO). i also like disposable paper coffee cups!
25.  Something your art has been compared to that you were NOT inspired by
i dont really recall if ive been told id like it or whether my stuff looks like it but an older webcomic(?) named Lore Olympus. aand if i remember correctly ive been asked about Hazbin Hotel/Helluvaboss? i just like demons, im actually a disgaea demon guy LOL
and more generally, modern animes; i certainly have my roots in anime styles but its been many MANY years since i was inspired by any.
i do get accurately pegged for being a homestuck a lot more than id expect though lol
29. Media you love, but doesn't inspire you artistically
a lot of real-play TTRPG stuff! while im not currently listening to any i like various realplay podcasts/shows, but none have necessarily jumpstarted me creating anything. (save for playing myself, of course, but that feels like a unique enough situation involving other ppl to not be “artistically” inspiring)

you cant really predict what pieces of media will affect you
it might be the theming of a whole series convincing you not to settle when it comes to deciding what to do with the one life you get
it might be an episode of your favourite scifi that changes how you view the smallest events and how big of an impact they can have on the future - yours or everyone you know's
it might be a line from a podcast about how the future seems scary but it "always flinches first" which gives you something to remember in your more anxious moments
or it might be an in-character rant from a realplay dnd podcast about everyone is more complex than they appear from the outside

WACKEN OPEN AIR PART II!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Picking up where I left off, after Hammerfall it was time for "Enemy of God, Purity and Innocence is killed" who? "Got a master plan, Genocide, Can't understand, People of the Lie" what? "Pleasure to Kill" KREATOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This was my 11th time seeing Kreator, first time in a decade of seeing them more than once in the same year as I saw them blow Sepultura off the stage in Toronto, and 2nd time seeing them play Wacken as I last saw them at Wacken Open Air 9 years ago, except I had the Wacken flu on the last day and Kreator were the last band I saw at that time, plus 2014 Wacken was bone dry weather. This time I see them on muddy ground as funnily enough last time they played Wacken was also on muddy ground, except I missed their set at that time as I was busy catching their compatriots Tankard. Even though I was near the Faster stage waiting for Helloween, Kreator still delivered the goods live like they always do. Before Flag of Hate Mille had commended the people at the front for being loud but felt that the people in the back weren't loud enough, eventually the people in the back got loud enough to impress Mille. Here's their setlist:
Run to the Hills(Iron Maiden song)Play Video
Sergio Corbucci Is DeadPlay Video
Hate Über AllesPlay Video
People of the LiePlay Video
Awakening of the Gods(Intro only)Play Video

After Kreator, it was time for "Come with me, Future World" who? "Eagle Fly Free, Let People See" what? "I Want Out, Leave Me Be, I Want Out" one more time? HELLOWEEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This was my 6th time seeing Helloween, 3rd time seeing them with Kai Hansen and Michael Kiske, first time in a decade seeing them more than once in a year, and 2nd time seeing them at Wacken as I saw them 5 years ago at Wacken with the current lineup. I will say biggest difference this time compared to 5 years ago is seeing Helloween on muddy ground, whereas 5 years ago it was one dusty ground. Seeing them at Wacken for me is truly a great experience since I'm seeing them live in their home country. It was also funny to see Andi Deris and Kiske bantering before Forever and One (Neverland). Here's what Helloween's setlist looked like:

(James Horner song)
After Helloween finished, I then grabbed a bite to eat and made my way back to camp and went to sleep.
Friday August 4th: I once again got out of my tent early in the afternoon and met up with Jess, in which it was great to see her again even after 13 months. We both had an in depth conversation to the point of getting emotional, but it felt good to let the tears flow, even with all the booze.
After bantering away, I made my way to the infield and before Maiden took the stage it was time for "Peace Sells...But who's Buying?" who? "À tout le monde, À tout mes amis, Je vous aim, Je dois partir" what? "Possibly I've seen too much, Hangar 18 I know too much" one more time? MEGADETH!!!!!! This was my 5th time seeing them and first time in 11 years I've seen them live as I last saw them at Gigantour 2012 in Hamilton, Canada with Motörhead, Volbeat and Lacuna Coil, then afterwards Dave Mustaine started going off the rails amd making a fool of himself in the process, which made me lose interest in them at that time. This was probably the 2nd best I've enjoyed Megadeth live just behind when they played Rust in Peace in it's entirety 13 years ago because Marty Friedman got to join Megadeth for a few songs, which was the closest to seeing the classic Rust in Peace line-up. Would've further been cool to see Ellefson present but of course he made a fool of himself 2 years ago and got terminated. Also I broke down crying during À tout le monde since I was thinking of both Elouise and Walter. Here's what their setlist looked like:
Prince of Darkness

Hangar 18

Wake Up Dead

In My Darkest Hour

Shadow of Deth
After Megadeth, it was time for "Caught Somewhere in Time" who? "Stranger in a Strange Land, Land of ice and snow" what? "You take my life, But I'll take yours too" one more time? IRON MAIDEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This was my 9th time seeing these guys as I saw them 10 months ago, 3 days before my 33rd birthday and they always put on a great live show. I'll also point out this was my 2nd time seeing them play Wacken as I saw them at Wacken 7 years ago. Bruce Dickinson is a character especially when he was riding the camera wheel and as well at one point saying to Eddie "This is a fucking gun" and as well his banters calling all 50,000 of us "The never surrender people. We didn't know this was going to be the first green car free festival" which was funny "And obviously replenishing the water supply for most of Germany for the last week or so". Bruce also said "I don't know if the ground is soft or is it hard? Hard is good, soft is not so good, unless you're an egg. If you try and jump, just go *blows air out* up up up up up it's whack-a-mole, look at that, 40,000 whack-a-mole" that was his funniest banter. Bruce then also asked "Where are the fuckin Irish... in the pub? There must be somebody from Ireland? OHH THERE'S ONE! Are you the only survivor of the celtic race? There's more of you and we played in Dublin and there's 15,000 of you" Bruce would then go on to say that "You can't kill language, you can't kill culture, you can't kill songs, art, and family" he would end his 2+ minute tangent with "This song is called Death of the Celts... but not quite". Bruce had also expressed his craving for a German sausage since he could smell them being grilled. Also at the end of Maiden's set their logo was lit up in drones and same with Eddie being in samurai Armour. Here's what their setlist looked like:
Doctor Doctor(UFO song)Play Video
Blade Runner (End Titles)(Vangelis song)Play Video
Caught Somewhere in TimePlay Video
Stranger in a Strange LandPlay Video
The Writing on the WallPlay Video
Days of Future PastPlay Video
The Time MachinePlay Video
The PrisonerPlay Video
Death of the CeltsPlay Video

Heaven Can WaitPlay Video
Alexander the GreatPlay Video
Fear of the DarkPlay Video
Iron MaidenPlay Video
Encore:
Hell on EarthPlay Video
The TrooperPlay Video
Wasted YearsPlay Video
Always Look on the Bright Side of Life(Monty Python song)
After Maiden it was time for WARDRUNA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This was my 2nd time seeing them as I saw them 10 months ago in Toronto 5 days after I turned 33 and I remember they were great live. Seeing Wardruna is more than seeing a band, it's a whole experience, like a crossover between concert and theatre. At one point there were two English lads talking during their performance and one of the locals put them in their place, which was great as they were getting annoying. At one point during their 3rd song Solringen, the speakers cut out for at least a couple minutes and the crowd began clapping, when they came back on, the crowd erupted with approval. Einer Selvik had said before Helvingen and during his banter he said "My culture over your culture bullshit, doesn't apply" which earned resounding applause as it's true. Here's what their setlist looked like:
