this easter It Is Time. using my years of fixation and research i present to you The Best Version of every song from jesus christ superstar, plus commentary. obviously subjective opinion so do feel free to discourse in the tags bc as you may have picked up i enjoy talking about the relative merits of jcs productions. also i might not even stand by this in a week bc i find it hard to keep multiple versions in my head at the same time for comparison and there are so so many versions.

please note that acting, vocal quality, music direction, and where available staging have all been taken into account. act 2 in rb bc of link restrictions.

heaven on their minds - 2012 broadway revival

obviously in terms of pure vocals carl anderson is unbeatable forever, but the staging of the 2012 broadway revival pips it for me. josh young's voice is still gorgeous and the judas/jesus/mary throuple is everything. i love versions where hotm is sung directly To jesus, and i love that in this version jesus actually listen and takes judas' concerns on board. the love and respect between all three of them is palpable and even though it is a serious disagreement, part of that disagreement comes from the fact that they care about each other so much. that's tragedy baby!

special mention to henrike tönnes on the 2022 rob carroll version, i specifically like the Ending of the song for that one. also the sarcastic clap along w the disciples that judas does in the 2013 hungary version.

what's the buzz/ strange thing mystifying - 2018 tv event

annoyingly this isn't on youtube but tbh the staging is nothing mindblowing. i think what's the buzz is a great song for showcasing the usp of each version and in this one i think being able to hear the real crowd actually cheering for jesus (john legend) really adds to the narrative. i also absolutely love brandon victor dixon and as i have said before he would be one of my favourite judases if judas were straight. sara bareilles does a great 'offended' face when he bitches about her lmao.

honourable mention to the 2012 uk arena tour for again showing off the conceit of 'modern day activists' really well in this song, not forgetting of course WOTS THE BUZZ #buzz tweet

then we are decided - 2013 hungary

(starts at about 9:49) obviously not a huge amount of competition for this one, i wish more versions included it bc it's a great song :( anyway i loveee the staging choice to have everyone else freeze-framed on stage with the priests walking among them, and i freaking love this caiaphas. literally inserting it into what's the buzz also works nicely

i do miss kurt yaghjian from the 1973 film tho, forever obsessed with his voice and facial expressions. extra shout out to the striving artists version for simply existing.

everything's alright - 2006 austria

something about the musical direction in 90% of versions of this song goes right through me, like there is always some weird instrument that makes me Cringe. but this version is Nice :) really enjoy how Pissed this judas is. and i love the way the long notes last into the next section of the song. i will say i prefer the alt melody for 'people who are hungry' but you can't have everything

this is a really nice one on the all-female cast recording as well, obviously it's already the most female-heavy song of the show but shoshana bean's judas is particularly good here i think. also of course carl anderson with tears in his eyes grasping ted neely's hands while the music swells is ingrained on my brain for all time.

this jesus must die - 1994 studio cast

this album as a whole is probably my Least Favourite JCS Ever, but i will admit that this song fucks. the haunting eeriness at the beginning. the way it kicks into a funky little syncopated rhythm. the disembodied hosannas. unexpected delight.

2012 uk arena tour is unfortunately disqualified for having possibly the Most antisemitic portrayal of the priests, which is a shame because it's probably my favourite casting. one of my favourite annas portrayals, but in general all of them are distinct and fully embodied which does make that version very fun to watch. i also really enjoy the 2019 castaway productions version for this song, the way they play instruments while they sing like a lil band, and caiaphas' eye make-up is sick. 1973 film is obviously also iconic with the little scaffolding tippy taps, and the way kurt yaghjian sings 'a trick-or-two with lepers'. i love this song sorry.

hosanna - 2017 striving artists

i kind of don't have justification for this one LOL i just like it. i know there are versions that are sung better and really the staging is quite important for this song but idk i just find this version really calming. i don't know if it's the music direction? i don't know enough about music tbh

admittedly this is another one that works really well for the 2018 tv event, but doesn't quite win for me as the crowd don't cheer in all the right places and john legend doesn't react at all to the 'would you DIE for me?' line which is crucial. for good reaction to that line the 2000 film where it elevates the bitchy gay tension in the love triangle really nails it.

simon zealotes - 2011 austria

EASYYY WIN FOR ME this is actually the song that made me want to pick a best version for each one because this version IS so much better than any other one for me. the guitar!!!!!! rob's energy!! the music design for this one really fucks so severely and then there's just rob jumping around hyping up the crowd (there is a film version from 2008 on youtube, but i wanted to capture the music for this one). iconic.

big love also to hungary 2013 for having a simon who's in a wheelchair, particularly notable when it's really the highest energy role in the show. i do enjoy.

poor jerusalem - 2022 rob carroll

i cannot find any information about this album other than what's on spotify but i do enjoy the slight alt melodies in this version and i like his voice.

not a lot to go into for this song really. i like the ben forster version a lot as well, and the 1996 london cast version. 'close your eyes' is a better lyric than 'live a lie'. moving on.

pilate's dream - 2022 all-female cast

may be biased bc I LOVE ORFEH but i just think this version is so gorgeous. i love the little vocal drifts without going too overboard and distracting from the song. the music composition is especially pleasing as well.

there's a lot of honourable mentions i could give here bc i think pilate has so much potential for power and gravitas, but 1973 film, 2012 uk arena tour, 2013 hungary, and east end theatrical ensemble. are also big favs. in terms of staging i love the fact that 2019 castaway productions has jesus himself on stage playing the backing piano like he actually is haunting pilate.

the temple - 1992 australia

australia 1992 habitually has some of the most interesting and creative music direction and this is one of the songs where it particularly pays off. love the whistles. i also like that the second 'get out' is spoken, not screamed. the second half is appropriately creepy with the sustained 'chriiiist'. pretty boring staging but at least the costumes are fun.

i don't know how to love him - east end theatrical ensemble

possibly controversial choice but ugh i love this version i even love how low the sound quality is. like listening to a vinyl. i think her voice is so gorgeous and i love her accent. deeply soothing to listen to. i feel like im in the 70s rn.

i'm also a huge fan of the 1996 london cast recording, joanna ampil has such a sweet voice and the way she emotes so that you can really Hear it works well for this song. special shout out to 2012 uk arena tour which i don't think is a particularly amazing version but we get the absolute gunshow from mel c at the end so we love it.

damned for all time/blood money - 1973 film

CARL!! I feel like 1973 film and 1996 london album are at a disadvantage in this bc they're what i grew up with so i kind of take them for granted but this is undeniably iconic. no one can commit to the tortured soul but belief he's doing the right thing like him. the way he can scream but it still sounds Good. i prefer versions that have annas suggest 'a fee' rather than caiaphas just repeating himself so that's here too. the weird keening way he sings 'on thursday night'. annas dropping the coins just as he reaches for them. UGH so good. a lot less brassy than other versions as well.

this is another song that kinda fucks in every version, but the original 1970 album and the 2018 tv event are particularly good i think. also that one bit in 2012 uk arena tour where annas is like '...... get up off the floor.'

i truly think the "a good show makes you crawl on the floor, cry and suffer" mentality tumblr (2010-2016) created is STILL affecting our perception on what is a blorbo or not.

so first of all, let's look at the urban dictionary definition of blorbo:

i'm definitely NOT saying that a blorbo shouldn't be all those things, but these are not necessary for a character to be a blorbo. [Miette (from real life) is a perfect example of this. she's our beloved blorbo and yet she's strong, a genius and non-toxic.]

now, i know most of yall know why i'm writing this. we all are aware of the active warzone tumblr has got going on. now to get to my point,

i know voltron fandom went apeshit over ships, created langst tags and stuff. (tbh i've learned all of these recently) but let's sit and think why. i've mentioned in one of my posts or rbs that the only thing i vividly remember about voltron is the queerbaiting and i know for a fact that queerbaiting was one of the biggest factors of these... actions. now when we look at yoi, we see a rather more peaceful fandom. is it because the show had a weaker chokehold on its fans? absolutely not.

i can assure you if yoi queerbaited us the way voltron did, there would be a chaos. and i'm not saying it in the way fans going crazy is funny or shit, no. i'm saying this as in real life chaos, like fans would threaten the creators or create their own reality. they WOULD remake yoi. there aren't any ship wars because victuuri (victor nikiforov x yuuri katsuki) is the ultimate ship, like there aren't any other possible options. nearly every single fan fell straight for victuuri. now think about how many fans are there and how many of them ships victuuri like they're praying to god itself. victuuri made me cry for DAYS, the plottwist was absolutely brilliant and no, none of these emotions were negative but god knows no show on earth made me feel the way yoi did. i'm not saying yoi is the best show ever or it's flawless. we all know our shows (blorbos are from) are generally not the best medias ever. but the way me and so many other fans bonded with this show, these 2 characters (or maybe 3, i don't like yurio that much) and that ship is indescribable. after watching yoi, i've realised that your favourite show doesn't necessarly need to make you feel like you've been stabbed in the chest bazillion times and suffer. no, it also can make you feel like you're on the verge of exploding with the white and shining happiness and love. i'm also pretty sure that's what most of the yoi fans feel, and also sure that no other show would make me feel the same way i felt while watching yoi.

yuuri katsuki, the man who made me feel all those things along with his husband victor nikiforov, is:

a canon bi king who had a crush on probably the prettiest girl in his childhood town and then got engaged to his lifelong idol (also probably the prettiest man in figure skating and,, the world)

anxious disaster (like, it's canon that he has anxiety and he was quite relatable and important for the fans with anxiety) who manages to say the MOST ridiculous stuff and yet tries his best to communicate with people about his needs and weaknesses

world's one of the best skater yet he's unaware how much of an pride he is for his country, fans and family and how good he is. STILL breaks his idols (literal legend of the figure skating) score

made irl queer people cry over him and figure skaters fall for him

got drunk af on the banquet of the gpf which he lost (BECAUSE HIS DOG DIED) and drank over 16 flutes of champagne AND DID POLEDANCE WITH THE SLUTTIEST MAN EVER, DANCED WITH HIS IDOL, WON A BREAKDANCE COMPETITION WITH HIS SOON-TO-BE RIVAL AND THEN DRY HUMPED HIS IDOL WHILE ASKING HIM TO BE HIS COACH

my point is, just because a character doesn't go through hell or make you feel like shit doesn't mean that he isn't a blorbo. you still can think that lance is more of a blorbo, good for you! but i really don't think we need fantasy to feel good.

putting him 5th because i fear putting him higher will jinx him and ogs know vic is one of my main guys. has had a pretty ass start to the season which i am not forgiving art gp for btw, but if este and pierre really both go "fuck it" then victor could get a chance. but it'd only happen if both seats are vacant bc there's still jack. honourable mention to jack who did not make top 5 simply bc i like victor more but he's the 6th. oh also if jack gets the f1 seat but vic doesn't i would love to recommend him to a certain affiliated hypercar team. in the 36 bc im attached to 35's lineup already #thealiens

4. zane maloney

f2 championship leader rn. i know it's incredibly early days and he has to contend with theo BUT if he does win f2 this year he would have done it in 2 years as opposed to theo's 3. although his case will only truly be made if theo flops in superformula (probably measured by performance relative to other toyota cars rather than the whole grid, but if ayumu beats him it Won't look good.) anyway if the above two things do happen zane's in a real shout for an audi seat. come on audi you can't be serious about hulk rn can ya...

3. arvid lindblad

why not the loveable red bull f2 lineup? imo it's the timing; isack and pepe are too close to make it to the next big rb shuffle, but arvid is 16, youngest f3 winner ever, and has the time to polish the rougher edges to be the prime choice for the baby bull seat when it becomes vacant again. also arvid is good although he panicked at the end of his f4 campaign and handed it to kacper. but isack also panicked at the end of his f3 campaign and i still rate him so. also hi isack have you considered hypercar (i know pepe already has)

2. liam lawson

pre-f1 debut i would think liam was doomed to be forgotten by the red bull machine because it's not easy to get your foot in the door. but because he did, and also because of the general wackiness of the red bull driver situation rn, he could stand a real chance. most likely he will take ric's seat. in the event they decide to show both ric and checo the door, they probably won't put him straight in the red bull. then again maybe verstappen will veto sainz jr again and then they'd have no choice (they won't put yuki in the second rb. i don't trust like that.)

1. ollie bearman

lil bro's destiny is all but written for him at this point, i'm very confident he will get a haas seat. whether he manages to make it into ferrari will imo depends less on how the charles/lewis lineup does and more on whether he can get to grips with the beast that is haas. once upon a time mick schumacher won euro f3 and f2 but what did haas do for him? exactly. although he is the best fda prospect of his generation (i am so sorry dino) so i am more inclined to think he will swim rather than sink

EDIT HOW DID I FORGET ABOUT KIMI ANTONELLI. although i think the f1 community as a whole is hyping him up too much and he deserves some breathing space to do what he does at his own pace so i am not ranking him 🫶

A/N: HI HI So i wrote this a few days ago and never posted it. Currently have a few Ed Grimley fics working right now but i wanted to post about my Frosty boy. This was based on the line "Your beauty never, ever scared me" from Mary on a Cross by Ghost. OK TO RB, but pr*shippers fuck off

Jack Frost was a man full of confidence. He practically worshiped himself, and his ego did not waver easily. But sometimes, even the strongest of people, or in this case, the strongest of Legendary Figures, faltered. All Jack wanted was Christmas. It was a simple request. All Scott had to do was just…hand it over. But he was making things very difficult. Jack was getting tired of trying, though he knew he couldn’t give up. 

The only reason that he wanted Christmas in the first place was for his love, Victor. He wanted to prove that Christmas wasn’t a bad time, that despite so many tragedies happening around that time of year for Vic, that it was still a magical time. He just wanted Victor to be happy. He wanted nothing else in the world than that, and that meant, getting Christmas. 

But after arguing with the elves, fighting with Scott, trying to trick everyone, blah blah…it seemed that nothing was going to work in his favor. Their favor. Yes, It was true that Victor wasn’t exactly aware of this whole thing. Or well, he was, but just faintly. He knew that Jack had a surprise for him, and was working on it. He didn’t quite know what it was though. He could’ve never imagined that Jack was trying to get Christmas to prove to him that it was alright after all. Sure he knew Jack’s feelings on the holiday, and how he wanted control of it, but he didn’t really think he’d do anything about it. 

And technically, he hadn’t done a thing about it. Which he kept reminding himself of as he paced in his and Victor’s shared room at the North Pole. He ran his fingers through his frosty hair, thinking out loud in a mumble. 

“What am i going to do? It’s going to be another year and Victor’s going to hate the holiday still…” He said to himself. “Why do I care about him? Why do i care about anyone? Why can’t my cold heart just let things go?” 

But he knew, deep down, that he loved Victor. He couldn’t be without him. From the moment he had met Victor, he knew that he had to be with him. He couldn’t stay away, showing up whenever he could to visit him, even in the summer. He knew he wouldn’t have invited Victor to live with him if he hadn’t loved him with his whole heart. And, most of all, he knew he wouldn’t be trying to steal Christmas just for him if he didn’t love him. 

“Jack?” Victor said as he peeked his head into their room. “Are you decent?” He asked with a grin. Jack turned to see Victor’s bespectacled face in the doorway, his short hair messy as always. He was still grinning as Jack turned to him. 

“Yes, I’m decent, my dear.” Jack said with a soft smile. “Is everything ok?” He asked, twiddling his thumbs. Victor let the door open a bit more as he leaned in the doorway, one eyebrow raised. 

“I think I should be asking you that, Mr. Frost.” He said to him. Jack scoffed, turning away from Victor. 

“Everything’s fine with me.” Jack said. He heard Victor’s footsteps growing closer to him, and soon he felt arms around his waist. The taller man kissed at Jack’s pointed ears, holding him gently. 

“Are you sure? Because I’ve been seeing you yelling at more elves than usual. And Santa seems upset with you. Don’t get me started on Bernard. I mentioned you around him and he said he was tired of you. What’s going on?” Victor asked. Jack sighed loudly, letting his shoulders fall.

“It’s nothing.” Jack said, feeling that he shouldn’t spoil the surprise. Victor turned him so they were face to face, and began planting kisses on his face and jaw. 

“You can talk to me. You know that, right?” Victor asked. Jack nodded. He planted kisses along his jawline until he reached his mouth, and pulled him in to kiss him on the lips. Jack’s hands rested on Victor’s waist as he leaned up to kiss him. No matter how long they had been together, Jack was always so touch starved and willing to be held. 

Victor was the first to pull away, but Jack pulled him right back in to kiss some more. “Wait…” Victor smiled. “Talk to me. We can kiss after, ok?” 

“I’d rather get to the kissing now.” Jack said, moving to Victor’s neck instead. 

“Jack.” Victor said sternly. Jack pulled away, looking anywhere but in Victor’s eyes. 

“I guess kissing you isn’t going to get me out of this, huh?” He asked. Victor shook his head.

“I want to make sure you’re ok. Now talk.” Vic said to him. Jack nodded. 

“Well…I’ve been working on that surprise for you…” He started. 

“Yeah, I remember. You said it might take a while.” Vic said. 

“Well. It’s really not going to plan. At all. Everyone’s being so…so…rude about it. They just won’t let it happen.” Jack said. “They’re really getting on my last nerve. They hate me here. Everyone here hates me.” 

“I don’t hate you.” Vic told him. 

“Well, of course not you. But everyone else. I’m too much for them. Too cold.” Jack sighed. Vic smiled at him. 

“I always loved how cold you were.” He told him. Jack glanced at Vic’s face. He was smiling softly at him, a look of love and understanding on his face. 

“Really?” Jack asked. 

“Your beauty never, ever scared me.” Victor said, wrapping his arms around Jack’s waist and hugging him tightly. “You’re the best thing that’s happened to me. I know it’s tough to know others don’t like you. And I know they don’t all like you very much. But I like you. And when Christmas is over, we’ll be back at our own home, and we’ll be happy. We won’t be here forever.” 

Jack sighed. The words lingered in his head. “We won’t be here forever…” He repeated. “Right…you’re right…I just wanted this surprise to help you through Christmas.” 

“I appreciate that, but you don’t need to do that, honey. You help me plenty as it is.” Victor told him with a smile. Jack nodded, unsure of what to say. Victor seemed to pick up on this. “Do you want me to grab us some hot cocoa and we can just hang out for a bit?” He asked. Jack, without a word, nodded, kissing Victor’s cheek before watching him walk out of the room to get their drinks. Maybe Victor was right. Maybe he didn’t need to get Christmas for him after all…

He shrugged and sat down on the bed. “Too bad I’m going to take Christmas anyway…” He grinned.

After seeing all the “promo” videos for Red, White & Royal Blue (the height comparison, the wrap video) I’m like vaguely scared for how this movies going to turn out.

I saw someone say that “it feels like its getting the Love, Victor treatment when it deservers the Young Royals treatment” and that SO TRUE.

Like i know Nick will probably do well because hes played queer roles WELL in the bast - but the biggest issue i fear is gonna be the chemistry. Like with shows like Young Royals and OBX where the main couples have really good chemistry you can normally see that in BTS videos. But with the two promos we’ve got for RW&RB they just...don't

Match Review: Burnley 0-1 Manchester United

We're back! Well, sort of. 3 points, a rare win away, a clean sheet, a first start in 8 years for Jonny Evans, and a disallowed goal - all with a skeleton hodge-podge team. Decent.

Lets start with the stats:

Possession: Burnley 62% / United 38%

Shots: Burnley 12 / United 11

On target: Burnley 4 / United 4

Corners: Burnley 9 / United 5

Fouls: Burnley 6 / United 12

It wasn't a pretty win but United weren't set up for it to be glamourous. Emergency dictated that Jonny Evans started alongside Victor Lindelof at CB, with an unwell Sergio Reguilon playing through the pain at LB and Dalot at RB.

The makeshift defence wasn't perfect, and Burnley had a lovely break through the lines that hit the post, but United's lack of synergy and freshness made Vincent Kompany's side look sharper than they are in truth.

The midfield too: Bruno Fernandes out wide right (with Pellistri relegated back to the bench), Hannibal Mejbri handed a start, and McTominay/Casemiro also making up the midfield. Bruno's progressive play is high risk/high reward, so possession would be tricky there. Casemiro isn't Carrick, he's a bruiser, so he wants to win back and release, and then there's Hannibal - a high energy battler and presser - and McTominay, who is outrageously out of form and seemingly out of shits to give for the team. A sad sight, really.

In what was a tough game for United away from home, down on luck, it could be seen as cruelty for Jonny Evans' headed goal to be denied by VAR for Rasmus Hojlund obstructing the keeper's view, but what better way to fight back than Jonny "Pirlo is a pussy" Evans pinging a ball upfield on his weak foot for Bruno to bury on the volley, bottom corner. Scenes.

You might need to click the tweet to see Bruno's goal but it's worth it. The little brother to the RVP/Rooney goal against Villa in in 2012/13.

Bruno/Evans magic aside, it was a hard fought match by United and particular praise should go again to Hannibal Mejbri. The young Tunisian international was tireless in the middle pressing and jostling, but also quite tidy with the ball. Statman Dave was timely with the Hannibal stats post game:

The youngster proved an astute rotation for Christian Eriksen who, like Juan Mata before him, is a genius level footballing IQ but whose physicality - through no fault of his own - means he can't be utilised as much as would be liked. Ten Hag was smart to recognise this quickly, rather than showing loyalty over suitability. In no world does Eriksen do what Mejbri did last night, and it probably costs United the win.

Beyond that there's not too much to analyse. Hojlund was unlucky not to slide in a low cross from Dalot, Rashford missed a late chance to tee up an open Casemiro, and Amrabat finally made his debut with a few minutes at the end - a similar story for the returning Raphael Varane. The only thing I didn't understand was Kompany's dress sense...

Ah well, a win's a win and United looked far more harmonious and relaxed after the result than we've seen in a long time. Lets hope our favourable run of games now can become a proper run of form, especially with so many home fixtures. Lets also hope Jonny Evans, the true red, maintains this level of form just in case we need him again.

so fun fact, i designed victor frankenstein before realizing how much he would shape my life, so.....i didnt think to make him look like me besides vague resemblance in the hair. which is why his current design is white. yes hes swiss but shut up i can design however i want, and i wish i did take those liberties. regardless, its far too late to go back and change anything about him, especially with TIS etc etc. on one hand im happy that he doesnt look like me, because i can still draw him if i am in a very self depricating mood lmao. on the other hand its a little annoying that theres so little of me in my design for someone i see so much of myself in.

because like. admittedly, im so tired of white character designs UGH like dammit theres never any freaking representation for anyone that looks vaguely like me, especially in gothic lit. a bunch of other artists do the same (no hate), and im pissed that i fell to the same thing!! i try to make it up with side characters but that not the same. yes, victor has sickly victorian twink energy, which elicits a mental image of a pale dude, but a!! im angry!! where am i, wheres everyone who doesnt fit that description??

when designing jekyll, at the time i was more into J&H than frankenstein, which is why my jekyll is hispanic and has a rounder face shape. but i wish i did a similar thing with vic. maybe not looking exactly like me, but i wish i made him hispanic. nothing really has to change, just intent. it forever infuriates me that i dont have a character thats really me and i cant think of a mad scientist in media thats hispanic (and not any stereotypes).

yes, the source material is very very white but a lot of us have just accepted that for the main characters with no protest and im :/ tired of it even though im also at fault
