Look, I'm as salty about walled-garden Discords replacing public-facing forums as the next nerd, but you've gotta understand that the reason people generally aren't operating their own forums anymore isn't because they're lazy.
Entirely apart from the labour of moderating a forum without any infrastructure to fall back on – and that labour is considerable! – the fact of the matter is that most modern privately hosted forum communities only exist at all by virtue of their obscurity.
The ability of bad-faith actors to render a forum unusable vastly outstrips the ability of a typical private individual to combat those efforts. A privately hosted forum community survives right up until the moment it encounters That One Guy who's willing to spend every spare moment for the next several months launching DDoS attacks because someone disagreed with his weird reactionary politics one time or he got moderated for saying the N word – and in the modern era, the odds of encountering That One Guy are much greater than they were in the turn-of-the-millennium heyday of forum culture.
I genuinely don't know if there's a good solution to this problem, but it explains a whole lot about the contemporary move toward non-public-facing, invitation-only communities; for all their shortcomings, the fact that they generally don't have to deal with this shit is a big perk.

Obsessed with the fact that one of the bigots from Girl Defined is trying to rebrand her social media to sell courses on how to make courses allegedly (for $2k, no less) and is also allegedly "heavily inspiring herself" with other people's content and she shared this IG story about somebody who made a parody of her account
Tumblr media
Which is, by the way, completely fine and allowed by Instagram's ToS and now she has caused said parody account to get extra attention and notice from others and it went from 14 followers to 600 in less than a day
Tumblr media
And she is big mad about it and it even appeared first in the search bar for me, in front of her own account

The way this god awful fandom still treats Bonnie, Tyler, and Marcel to till this very day is insane. The way these characters are talked about hasn’t changed one bit. Still very much misunderstood, still overly hated for absolutely no reason, and still unappreciated and undervalued by a fandom that claims to have progressed, when in reality is nowhere near different than the one a decade ago.

fandom criticism / racism is always loudest when the racebent character is a Black woman whose love interest is a white man. that seems to set those folks off like none other.

How Social Media Algorithms Hurt Black Girls
While research from Common Sense Media recently highlighted how social media impacts girls’ mental health in general, I started to wonder how viral police killings were affecting Black girls in particular. After all, Black girls sustain some of the highest rates of social media use and are more likely to encounter race-related content than other groups online. After conducting a study1 with nearly 20 Black girls (ages 18-24) across the US and Canada, my initial fears were confirmed: Black girls were reporting unprecedented levels of anxiety, depression, fear, and chronic stress from encountering Black death online.

Blogs whose owners are, like, super into orcs are always a toss-up because there's a 50% chance they've got some sort of weird Noble Savage fetish going and a 50% chance they just want to get bullied by a seven-foot-tall lady with boobs like cannonballs and biceps to match, and there's no way to tell in advance which is which.

The Zionist state plans to try a U.S. citizen and New Orleans-area resident – Samaher Esmail – in a military court over social media posts. They’re not even alleging that she did anything besides post pro-Palestinian pictures.

A federal judge on Monday threw out a lawsuit by Elon Musk’s X that had targeted a watchdog group for its critical reports about hate speech on the social media platform. In a blistering 52-page order, the judge blasted X’s case as plainly punitive rather than about protecting the platform’s security and legal rights. “Sometimes it is unclear what is driving a litigation,” wrote District Judge Charles Breyer, of the US District Court for the Northern District of California, in the order’s opening lines. “Other times, a complaint is so unabashedly and vociferously about one thing that there can be no mistaking that purpose.” “This case represents the latter circumstance,” Breyer continued. “This case is about punishing the Defendants for their speech.” X’s lawsuit had accused the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) of violating the company’s terms of service when it studied, and then wrote about, hate speech on the platform following Musk’s takeover of Twitter in October 2022. X has blamed CCDH’s reports, which showcase the prevalence of hate speech on the platform, for amplifying brand safety concerns and driving advertisers away from the site. In the suit, X claimed that it had suffered tens of millions of dollars in damages from CCDH’s publications. CCDH is an international non-profit with offices in the UK and US. Because of its potential to destroy the watchdog group, the case has been widely viewed as a bellwether for research and accountability on X as Musk has welcomed back prominent white supremacists and others to the platform who had previously been suspended when the platform was still a publicly-traded company called Twitter.

Moses Ingram, who plays the inquisitor Reva Sevander, aka the third sister in Obi-wan Kenobi, just posted on her Instagram story about the racist, hateful messages she’s been getting in her DMs.
Mind you, we’re only two episodes in.
She doesn’t deserve this. Especially not from the fandom that is supposedly so “welcoming” and “loving.”
But this is the pattern we always see. Over and over again.
They did this with Ahmed Best, John Boyega and Kelly Marie Tran. They keep doing this.
Welcoming is a myth. I’m sick of it. I’m glad she’s exposing this, but Star Wars needs to do better calling this out. This shouldn’t be her responsibility.
They need to protect their actors of color. But it’s sad that I don’t expect them to.

I wrote a newsletter about why I'm deleting my Twitter account once and for all. I'm sadder than I thought I would be. But I explain why it's no great loss, in the end.

If you fucking dare equate protestors who took over the Presidential Secretariat simply by finally outnumbering the cops, without any property damage let alone injury, after weeks and months of being absolutely brutalized by army and police for protesting completely peacefully, I hope you fall into a sewer and have to swim upstream with your mouths open.
The only violence has come from cops and military. They shot two people today, and injured 40 more. One died. Two journalists have just been assaulted on live TV, one of them a 23 year old kid who is in a bad way. There has been no property damage, or assaults on anyone.
Even before, the protests were kept 100% peaceful even when we were attacked repeatedly with tear gas, water canons, rubber bullets and even live rounds, beaten and bashed on the head with batons and dragged off and arrested. Right up until the PM literally sent bus loads of goons into the heart of the country's protest camp and destroyed it. Only then did people finally lose it and burn down all the government MPs homes and offices.
Even then innocents were not harmed and the houses were completely sacked and evacuated first. Not saying it were good or right, but it's was a shatteringly human response to over 18 months of starving, tormenting and bankrupting us, and kidnapping and terrorising anyone who protested. Far, far longer for marginalized communities. But the international media and US social media just grabbed the footage of the riots and fires and made us out to be rabid, violent beasts who had been storming buildings and terrorizing politicians and state forces.
This is the callous, racist, unthinking violence you whites and Westerners do to us. Especially USAmericans. You don't understand how much damage a stray reblog or retweet can do just by virtue of you being USAmerican and sitting on the world's largest information hegemony. Our government steals our rights and lives and you strip us of our dignity and agency and the right to tell our own stories.
We are not you. We are our own people. Let us tell our own stories in our own voices, and stop inferring and assuming shit without knowing jackshit about what's going on on the ground.

the issue with seeking publication for my manuscripts is in order to do that you have to be willing to really strongly advocate for yourself and why it would be better for your manuscript to be published than any other, and, as a white guy whose manuscripts both draw very strongly from chinese literature and history, i’m not sure i can like. ethically do that lol
