On May 19 Sgt. Michael Kunovich deemed him suspicious while outside the Super 8 motel parking lot. Aguilar Mendez was sitting down eating but started to walk away when the officer approached in his patrol vehicle. Kunovich began to question him, but Aguilar Mendez couldn't understand him or communicate well and repeated that he was sorry. That's when Kunovich decided to search him, and Aguilar Mendez resisted. Two other deputies arrived to assist in taking the 5-foot-4, 115-pound teen to the ground as Kunovich repeatedly stunned him with his taser, all seen on body-worn camera video. Aguilar Mendez can be heard screaming for his family and is seen trying to gain control of the taser as the officers note in the video. Toward the end of the 6-minute scuffle, the deputies saw that their handcuffed suspect had a small folding knife and disarmed him. Kunovich collapsed a short time later in medical distress and died at the hospital, the Sheriff's Office said. Aguilar Mendez, who came here from Guatemala, was staying with other farmworkers at the hotel. He is being detained without bail, which is the subject of another hearing as yet to be decided. (source)
I'm going to need you all to start spreading awareness about this case and sign the petition. I'm a 5'4 woman and I weigh more than him. He's only 18, indigenous and doesn't understand English nor Spanish really. I can't imagine how confused and scared he was. Tased 6 times and apologizing repeatedly and calling out for his family... he is not responsible for the police officer's death. The fact he's been held for 8 months without bail is disgusting.
Virgilio looks so small, sad and defeated in all of the images I've seen of him.

I was listening to Behind The Police (podcast about the history of American policing) recently and at one point the hosts were discussing the tendency of white supremacist/fascist violence to have this element of absurdity to it - ie, people dressing up in white KKK robes and calling themselves wizards while attacking black people - and the point of this is to deny their victims the decency of “straightforward” experiences of violence. To later recount that a group of wizards attacked you makes you to sound absurd to whoever you’re talking to, and it becomes more difficult to make sense of. it’s all “just a joke bro.” your discomfort and fear and confusion and pain is the punchline. and modern right wing discourse is so laughably deranged as to be a joke in itself (perhaps best epitomised by the now-memetic phrase “the fluoride in the water is making the frickin’ frogs gay”), but this is of course deliberate. the rhetoric of “satanic pedophiles are sacrificing children in the basement of a pizza restaurant” or whatever is employed because it distracts from the real message they’re trying to deliver (ie, antisemitism). it isn’t just a denial of reality but a very particular form of cruelty that makes it more difficult for the victims of right wing violence to be taken seriously, to make sense of what’s happened to them.
and it feels like the same thing is happening now with transphobia - rhetoric that insists on “protecting children” from trans people while the US is actively loosening their child labour laws (x) (x). this isn’t a case of mere “hypocrisy,” this is rhetorically deliberate. the rank absurdity and insincerity of their words is meant to deny you the ability to think clearly, to distract you, to make you sound like a crazy person, to enrage you, all the while they get to carry on as if they aren’t saying or doing any of these things

Anyways, I cannot fucking understate the psychic damage that is done by transitioning as a trans- masc while being a person of color.
People already didn’t listen to my opinion and boundaries before my voice and body started passing as somewhat male. But as I’ve started to pass, more and more often, my voice and opinions and boundaries are not only ignored; I’m treated as hyper-aggressive/hostile/mean, inagreeable, and stubborn.
Even by my loved ones and friends, they way they treat the words that come out of my mouth or words through text has changed.
When I cannot say “What you said/did hurt me and I need you to own up to that in some actually active way, or at least apologize.”without invoking white tears - when I cannot get upset over boundary crossing and being ignored without invoking anger about my “attitude”… How am I meant to exist safely?

Medical racism isn't important to address just because it's mean to be racist to patients (I mean, it is mean), but because medical racism kills people. It contributes to systemic suffering of those deemed non-white, and the disinformation that spreads about non-white people.

racism in the community.
it's under the cut for those who want to read this. i don't have many examples and i apologize, and i'm not name dropping for my own safety [ last time i called someone out i was mocked by them, and was really insecure about my chosen aesthetic for a bit. ]
now, i know we've talked about the racism within the community and Gaz, but can we talk about the racism in the community with Horangi? someone I follow [ won't name drop for now ] recently said this in response to someone saying it's weird they call Horangi "rice cooker"
Tumblr media
that just feels like a lot of words for "I can't be racist, I have [type of race] kind of friends!" like i genuinely understand they're fictional characters, but you shouldn't be racist against fictional people just like real people, the fuck? like they can't be like "oh yeah! you can call me [hurtful thing] it's fine."
any comments exposing the person in the screenshot will be deleted.

2023:
“well joe biden said he saw pictures of beheaded babies”
“well the news said hamas committed mass rape”
“well the israeli government said opposing their war crimes defense is antisemitic because palestinians are nazis”
“well the newspaper article said the violence is self-defense for the hamas attack”
“well the IDF said they didn’t target the hospital and it was actually hamas’s rocket”
we need to remember that propaganda is not relegated to history books. they will continue using it to sway public opinion on political topics, especially state violence. including the “reputable” news sources, including the “progressive” politicians.

American president Andrew Jackson was an actor in the MCU, but he had to take a break from acting for four years to be president. When he came back, he told Marvel he wanted be Captain America and told Chris Evans he should be president. Marvel rejected him because he was racist.

Historically, the fact that zombies originated in Haiti, as an expression of the terror felt by enslaved people towards the idea that they would remain enslaved even after death,makes the fact that nowadays, zombie narratives have become synonymous with "white dude (usually cop or adyancent) fantasy where you get to unleash your violent desires on a mass of homogenous dangerous people who are coming for your kid and wife next" makes it sooooooooooo much worse. Zombies have always been political
ok I looked this up bc I don’t know very much about it and this NPR article has a good excerpt:
Suicide was the slave's only way to take control over his or her own body ... And yet, the fear of becoming a zombie might stop them from doing so ... This final rest — in green, leafy, heavenly Africa, with no sugarcane to cut and no master to appease or serve — is unavailable to the zombie. To become a zombie was the slave's worst nightmare: to be dead and still a slave, an eternal field hand.
which I think reinforces the reading of zombies in american pop culture as these racialised non-persons, although the perspective on them has shifted drastically

With all of the Kanye west black Hebrew Israelite bullshit in the media, it’s important to remember that there are Black Jews. Being Black and Jewish does not make you affiliated with BHI in any way (BHI are in fact, not Jewish, and I would consider them an antisemitic hate group) Black Jews are no less Jewish than anyone else and they deserve to be in our spaces and be respected as Jews. Conflating Black Jews with Black Hebrew Israelites is something that should be absolutely not tolerated.

Just because I havent seen this on tumblr yet;
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And just to be clear, they had to close replies to this thread because of the wash of comments like this;
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and on and on and on ad nauseum, there are even fouler things in here like people just openly stating that tolkien is for white people but honestly I find comments about how 'well they should have just done x with the show' almost as horrible, the act of being so callous as to hear a man say someone hacked his financial accounts and doxxed his home address because of specifically racist driven hate screed and then somehow think it's appropriate to respond 'if they hadn't made a show I hated so much maybe his phone wouldn't have been hacked' it just displays such an outstandingly self serving callousness and willful ignorance of the racist environment the tolkien fandom exists in, this is what I meant when I said a year ago that these comments are indistinguishable from the racist stuff, it is sitting next too and supporting and agreeing with the racists!
