Frederick Lea Hardy died fighting for Canada at Vimy Ridge in the First World War. Shortly before being killed in action, the teenager spent time in prison doing hard labour as a military punishment for his sexuality.

Hardy was one of at least 19 members of the Canadian Expeditionary Force involved in consensual relationships who were arrested and tried for what was then known as gross indecency.

The painful, often bleak, stories of these men were uncovered by Sarah Worthman while doing research at Veterans Affairs Canada. Her findings have just been published under the auspices of the LGBT Purge Fund, a non-profit organization established through a class-action settlement.

my girlfriend and I were talking about how desperately our city needs dyke bars and our (well-meaning) friend said "as in lesbian only bars?"

so I explained, and I cannot stress this enough, that lgbt+ meeting and gathering places that attempt to police what identities are permitted, especially based on appearance or perception, are doomed to exclude people who need that space

banning people for bigotry? absolutely do that. but when a meeting or gathering space relies on trying to clock people's gender or sexuality, problems arise. trans women get excluded for being percieved as men. ace and aro people get excluded for not being "queer enough". bi people get excluded for being in m/f relationships. closeted people get excluded for being in the closet.

as a community, we have to be very careful about declaring that others don't belong.

You are valid. You are just as queer as anyone else. Your identity is not up for debate, and you do not have to feel attraction in a certain way to celebrate pride month as a fellow member of the LGBTQ+ community.

If you're straight and on the asexual/aromantic spectrums, you're welcome in the LGBTQ+ community.

If you're trans and straight, you're welcome in the LGBTQ+ community.

If you're polyamorous and straight, you're welcome in the LGBTQ+ community.

If you experience a type of straight attraction as well as a type of queer attraction, such as split attraction, you're welcome in the LGBTQ+ community.

If you're intersex and straight, you're welcome in the LGBTQ+ community.

There is no ranking of who is the most queer. Members of all orientations are incredibly valuable to our community.

I ask all non-straight queer people to remember that being straight does not erase or negate other queer people's struggles! The P.E.I. Transgender Network is holding a rally for trans rights on April 2nd.

The group says the rally is being planned in reaction to "ongoing and increased public displays of transphobia/anti-trans movements occurring across P.E.I."

Lucky Fusca is the executive director of the group. They say that at the same time they are planning the rally, they have moved a health-care panel discussion from in-person to online because of safety concerns.

"With the anti-trans rhetoric and movements happening globally and specifically on Prince Edward Island, there was a question from one of our panelists around safety," Fusca said. [...]

Had to block someone so I want to be clear about something: if you don't think asexual and aromantic people are lgbt+, or if you think that they can't identify as queer, you're not welcome on this fucking blog

I'd like to also state that when I was a teenager, I was aphobic, but then I realized that I was trying to gatekeep a community based around genders, sexual orientations, and romantic orientations that deviate from the dominant culture

i think discourse over the word q*eer would be solved if more people jsut went:

“that word, alongside many other words, are often used to demonize lgbt people and the language that demonizes us is always going to add new terms. there’s nothing wrong with reclaiming said word to describe one’s experiences, but you shouldn’t use it for those who have asked to not be referred to with that term. also, sometimes you will need to tag that word because there are some triggered by it for personal reasons, and that is okay.”
