book recs sept/oct 2023

THE SPEAR CUTS THROUGH WATER by simon jiminez -- I have no idea how to describe this. best book I've read in a year. absolutely gutting and beautiful and intricately put-together fantasy about two young men escorting an escaped god-empress on a pilgrimage to bring down an empire. but actually it's so much more intimate than that. please please please read this book, it deserves the world. yes it's gay.

WITHOUT FURTHER ADO by jessica dettmann -- an aussie romcom tailored specifically to me, someone who imprinted on the kenneth branagh much ado about nothing movie. very meta and genre aware, lively and touching, a heap of fun.

LOOKING GLASS SOUND by catriona ward -- also very meta! it's uhhh about a bisexual disaster teen's coming-of-age summer, and also about the decades-later fight over who gets to control the narrative of that summer. and hauntings. and serial killers. every single one of ward's books is its own unique thing and a wonder to behold.

THE NOBLEMAN'S GUIDE TO SEDUCING A SCOUNDREL by kj charles -- if i haven't made you read any kjc books by now then what are we doing here. I don't know how she keeps getting better and better and better. this one is another slippery liar/stubbornly goodhearted but bad-tempered lord pairing. I adored every word.

NOT HERE TO MAKE FRIENDS by jodi mcalister (ARC) -- 3rd book in her series set on a bachelor-like tv show, and my hands-down favourite. friends to lovers but also make it schemer 4 schemer!! I would die for this ruthless tv villain and her sleep deprived gremlin producer and their intense, searing, incredible romance entirely free of conventional moral compasses.

THE HOLLOW PLACES by t. kingfisher -- how are her books both so hilarious and so wildly, skin-crawlingly unsettling?? I think it's because of how relatable the protagonist is. I would react EXACTLY like kara if I found an eerie alternate dimension nexus made of willow trees in the walls of my uncle's weird museum. superb and very readable horror.

THE GILDED CROWN by marianne gordon (ARC) -- fantasy with a sapphic romance between a death-witch and the assassinated princess she was hired to raise from the dead. yes you're right that DOES sound amazing. the writing is assured and smooth and propulsive; if you like stories with a heightened mythic/fairytale feel, you'll love this.

Outside of Vivo, the hottest resturant in Eldoria, Crown Princess Catriona left her 18th birthday dinner after an argument ensued. According to restaurant staff, the Crown Princess and the Queen were seen in a heated argument over the Princess' plans to attend the University of Eldoria. The Queen, per restaurant staff, was unhappy with the idea of the Crown Princess having a regular college experience. The University term starts in a few days. Princess Catrìona

Sister of Kate Crackernuts

(Kah-tree-nah) The Scottish Gaelic name for Katherine (Kate)

The story of Kate Crackernuts

"Kate Crackernuts" is a Scottish fairy tale collected by Andrew Lang in the Orkney Islands and published in Longman's Magazine in 1889. The tale is about a princess who rescues her beautiful sister from an evil enchantment and a prince from a wasting sickness caused by dancing nightly with the fairies.

In the original version, both sisters have the name “Kate” and are the same age.

First Neverafter (Ep1-3]

Closely follows the original tale, with the dark times coming after their story ‘ended’

Both grew up in a Small forgotten kingdom bordering Jubilee

Catríona is the daughter of the King and Kate Crackernuts is the daughter of the new Queen (The Stepmother)

The Hen-wife and the Stepmother on the third try trick her into losing her beautiful head and switching it for a sheep’s one when she is 18

Kate grabbed Catríona's human head and they ran away to fend for themselves, where they came upon the kingdom of Jubilee

Kate finds that one of King Cole’s sons is sick, and goes on to watch him for three nights, following him to the Green-hill where faeries force him to dance the night away

Over three nights Kate gets the cures for her sister and the prince

Kate Crackernuts reunited Catríona with her human head and healed King Cole’s sick son from the wasting

The sick, now healed, son marries Kate and the good son marries the ill, now healed, Catríona [Their Happily Ever After]

As the war came to Jubilee they fought alongside their husbands and died on the battlefield at the age of 24

Present day post merging of the two lives:

The faeries of the Green-hill bring back Catriona into the new world

as something (the Stepmother) has reached Kate first,

they didn’t want to summon either of the princesses, but the princes have disappeared, due to Jubilee not existing, in this new version

the Mother Goose putting Old King Cole in the book, and his kingdom disappearing from the Neverafter [fairies and Catriona don’t know this]

in this world the Stepmother has stolen her human head and locked Kate away somewhere, stopping them both from escaping together

The second world Catriona had left her father’s castle on her own scared of her Stepmother who stole her head and of what the people would say of her sheep head.

Neither sister completed their set stories

Fairies task Catriona with finding the source of the stories going missing and bring it to them, for Catriona and Kate cannot have their happily ever after if their princes doesn’t exist

Throughout her journey in her second life, she has started to doubt the sincerity of the fairies, but for the major part still sees them as the preferable side and an opponent to The Stepmother

Returned around the same time as PCs despite dying much earlier than the group, the faeries were reluctant to employ a princess and spent more time trying to find other methods, the reluctance is noticeable to Catriona when she is in the in-between with the faeries of the Green-Hill

we'll see what happens in Tuffeton, but I think she would be tailing the party after hearing news of the disappearance of the massive spider that had taken the village previously

Her new body/skills

the stepmother still has her human head and in turn, Catriona now has the head of a ewe with curling horns she can use to ram her opponents. [Minotaur reskin]

she speaks with a sheepish lisp as she had to reteach herself how to speak common as she initially could only bleat when her head was stolen

she can speak to any type of sheep, and understands some goat tongue

This Catriona has been wondering the Neverafter after running away, studying magic as a force to rescue her sister, and combat the Stepmother [3rd level Fighter Eldritch Knight]

The head is of a Scottish Blackface sheep, where the ewes also have horns The armour is believed to be dated around 1515 from Greenwich, England, and belonged to Henry VIII The sword is a European sword dated around 1400AD The page is from a 16th Century manuscript written in Latin, Scots, and Gaelic

I don't have any photos of Murdo as he just aged into a child, but here are Boudica and Loughrie. Boudica's father is Minstrel Democritus, Caledonia's first husband. Loughrie is Build Master Kenneth's daughter and the result of an extra marital affair. Murdo is the son of Commander Anson, Caledonia's second husband. There was another princess between Loughrie and Murdo, her name was Catriona but she was sent to gladiator school, she was also Anson's child.

The Michaels kids, Kids.

Generation three? Let's go! No. I am not doing generation four. If I ever do a doubled aged up family of destruction I'd just mention them in passing.

Because let's remember, Leon and cassie are supposed to be kids right now. They have been aged up for content purpose. Their original birth dates? 2000 and 2005. But these two were never meant to be kids, they are more interesting teens and adults. And also for the storyline, they have to be. I mean I've changed John's birthdate, and I'm always changing or avoiding Shawn and takers age 😅

Willow Sky Michaels-

Willow is John's only child, but with the amount of cousins she has, she's basically not a only child. She's the oldest of the Michaels. She follows John strongly in the fact she loves music. She doesn't become a wrestler but sure loves making apparences in the business and has a spot on the wrestlers roster. She mainly makes entrance music for wrestlers.

She's childish and loves to mess around but just like John can be serious when necessary, and as the oldest grandchild, she tends to be the leader a lot. She also has her other parents bad temper and anger issues. But, she manages to control it with music.

Her base age, (the age she's designed to be, obviously ages change all the time in my stories.) Is 17. Her birthday is 12th of May.

Her favourite cousin is Athena but she's closet with Beau. Leon is her favourite uncle/auntie.

Leon Thomas Michaels and Drew Mcintyre-

Beau Zeppelin Michaels

Beau is a split of Leon. He has Leon's personality and attitude but Drews looks. Beau enjoys wrestling but it isn't his first love, just like Leon, he hates being the center of attention, but the issue is, just like Leon (lol), he's a natural at it which makes him a big deal. He's well known for his strong ring presence and skills in the ring.

Beau has a passion for art (drawing and photography), sports (dancing, basketball and wrestling) and skating. He's a class clown, a real asshole and trouble maker but he has one of the sweetest, purest souls out there. There's just a few walls to get through. He clashes with both drew and Leon but especially Leon because their so alike. But, because their so alike they get on the best aswell. They rarely fight but when they do, it's like a world war.

He definitely has his anger issues but will eventually learn a way to control it.

His base age is 15. His birthday is 9th of August. (Allow it fam. I need pieces of myself in all my ocs)

His favourite sibling is Ophelia. His favourite cousin is Willow. He's the closest to Willow and Athena, mostly because of their age. His favourite auntie/Uncle is John.

She's the child of Leon and Valentina. Leon offered to be a sperm donor for Val when the father dropped out when Athena was born. So Leon stepped up and now they share custody of her.

Athena is definitely a cliche popular girl and she loves it.

She's definitely Leon's most sassiest child. She's a drama queen and loves stirring up trouble to watch.

She ends up being the most like the Death Valley lot because neither of her parents have a pure soul.

She loves singing and acting. She does adventure into the wrestling world, but only as a manager as well she wants to focus on a acting or singing career more.

Ophelia Catriona Michaels

Ophelia is definitely the quietest of the pack. She likes painting and drawing. Loves video games and cooking/baking. She hates sports. Her sketch book is basically surgerically attached to her. She loves reading. She also loves hiding away in Beau's room.

Ophelia also gets involved in wrestling but it's entirely behind the scenes. She's very into fashion and goes on to be a fashion designer, one of her side jobs is creating gear for the wrestlers, which she does for free.

She enjoys getting involved in Athenas trouble making by adding quiet little comments, then she'll just sit back and watch.

She's not entirely innocent. She loves bullying Caspian and Hunter. Especially caspian. Ophelia has a dry witty sense of humour and yes, sarcasm is a gene that runs strong in this family but Ophelia? She's the queen of it.

She's definitely the smartest of the pack.

Caspian is a golden retriever puppy as a human. He's always needs to be doing something. He's hyper and loud. He loves running and he loves annoying his siblings.

He loves video games and he especially loves watching wrestling. He also loves practicing moves on hunter. He becomes a wrestler like Beau but is more known for his humour and mic skills than his in ring talent.

He struggles in school the most out of the kids but is the most well behaved one in school. He just struggles on focusing and staying on the task at hand.

Caspian has a love for building things aswell. The only reason he stays in school is for the wood work classes. He adores legos and anything DIY.

He goes on to grow a love for working on cars and bikes. It seems the only time he can focus is when building or fixing something.

Hunter Michaels (Kang Hyun-Woo)

Hunter was taken in by the Michaels when he was 5. They saved him from a very shitty situation in which his parents left him in the valley. Which obviously isn't safe. He's very grateful for Leon and drew and even more grateful that they go out of their way to continue letting him explore his culture as well as theirs. He's also impressed by how good Leon's Korean is but also that the others go out of their way to learn it as he begins to learn English.

Hunter began his love for dance whilst watching Leon and Beau dancing in the gym one day and decided that was his calling. Leon, obviously knowing what it's like to dream of being a dancer, immediately signs him up for classes with Beau.

Hunter goes on to become a dancer, doing back up dancing for celebs but also running his own dance class. He adores dance and wouldn't trade it for the world.

He's also hyper like Caspian but is more on the quiet side. He loves playing with caspian and the pair are practically joined at the hip for most of their life.

Fake twins- Cas and H are the families fake twins. They both share the same birthday but also act a lot like twins. They clicked immediately and are basically inseparable. The wrestling community refer to them as the sunshine twins because of how bubbly and happy they are.

Cassidy Athena Michaels and Rhea Ripley-

They have Twin boys.

Jesse Leo Ripley and Joshua Theo Ripley (I have never struggled so much to find twins. So, they both look like him)

Jesse is definitely the trouble maker whilst Josh is the good kid. They have a Grumpy and sunshine dynamic.

Jesse is younger by 4 minutes.

Josh loves this and uses it to tease him.

Jesse loves engineering and josh loves having his photo taken. Both boys loves started at a young age and went on to develop and become more serious as life went on.

Jesse hates his photo taken and josh hates having to work on cars and normally gets his brother to deal with it.

Josh is very clumsy and Jesse is dyslexic, so both boys are always looking out for each other whether it be ready to catch josh or to read over Jesse's school work before it's handed in.

Even tho both boys are polar opposites they get on the best in the family. It has to be a twin thing.

They also have a thing they do in which they'll perfectly copy each other, as if they were reading each others minds, and not even notice.

They hate twin stereotypes but that is the only one that applies to them.

The pair do become wrestlers and do the whole twin dynamic. But they have side hobbies that also become jobs.

Jesse goes on to design and sell motorbikes whilst Josh models.

In honor of the third issue releasing tomorrow, I present to you the first half of the first issue of: NOBODY’S PRINCESS

As a young lady of noble birth, Lady Theodosia Averelle (Theo to her friends) has always known what was expected of her: behave appropriately, learn to manage a household, and marry well.

But when confronted with the reality of an arranged marriage to a prince she’d never met and a future ruling a foreign kingdom, Theo realizes one very important piece of information about herself...

She doesn’t want to be a princess.

With that in mind, Theo does what any reasonable young lady would do in her position—she fakes her own kidnapping and demands her dowry as the ransom so that she can run away and live a life of adventure. Too bad her fairy tale prince isn’t going to give up on "rescuing" her that easily. Good thing Theo makes a good outlaw.

Having a flair for the dramatic, and a desire to up the amount of money she could spend on food, Katriona trained to be a highflyer (and took a more comedic angle to her wrestling), and soon doubled her drawing power because of it, after all, it's not everyday that you see an (actual) giant do a backflip and succeed. Going under the mask, as a way to market herself as a potential threat, came soon after this.

Although, in reality, she knows deep down that she wears the mask to hide her face, and remain somewhat private in her everyday life. She would make people think that if the mask was removed, during a match, that she would become much more savage, and cannibalistic, and attempt to bite her opponent. Vesta talked her into becoming the Gluttonous Giantess, and soon after joining the Lucifarians, her natural height and weight advantage, put her on track for being the biggest draw of the group, a role Katriona doesn't like much.

Filly Butterfly: Rainbow edition, Europe (Ukraine)

Egmont's Filly Magazine in Germany was releasing Rainbow Butterfly toys in late 2022. Now, besides Glitter Butterfly the same magazine covered, Rainbow Butterfly also comes to Europe, starting with Ukraine!

We have another round of some new characters (who are, yet again, recolours of Butterflys from 2014), their names are completely new and unique: Lulu (Tia's recolour), Pia (Alyssa's recolour), Nicki (Bea's recolour?), Ninel (Nina's recolour and names are similar), Valerie (Toby's recolour), Colette (Rhett's recolour), Amara (Jack's recolour? even Water group's mark is intact, which shouldn't be the case for Heart group...), Heidi (Lotus' recolour), Catriona (Freya's recolour).

Scarlet of course is kept, she's special character. Emma from Friendship Group and Sara from Flower Group are also remaining Butterflys from ~2014+ collection(s).

Also yes, Dracco does just 'remakes' of old characters with additional design elements now, at least since last Blue Ocean magazines in ~2021. Though for European 2023+ editions they at least change colours lol. I get it, it's hard to be a small toy company with financial struggles. At least they continue still~

As for the text of 2023+ flyer, it reads

Celestina took Natalia, Xaden and Catriona past the wards. The Floating Islands rose above her.

The Halos Islands were a wild Valg, it was said their islands were held boyouent because of a Daglan's body they'd sacrificed.

The land was lush, green, beautiful. A place of peace and beauty.

The doors opened for Celestina, she'd been a Princess here before she'd left for different lands.

Her uncle greeted her, kissing her cheek. He beamed, pulling Catriona into a tight hug.

"You're going to get mated love! That's such fantastic news. Now where is -"

"Uncle Ulysses, you've must heard of the war. Will you help?"

Ulysses slid storm gray eyes to Celestina.

"He still keeps you happy neice?"

Celestina resisted the urge to roll her eyes. It was endearing but Ephriam was still barred from these lands.

"Yes Uncle. Will you help?"

Ulysses looked to Natalia, he stepped back. His wings gray and white.

"Come inside, we can talk over refreshments."

He looked to Catriona and Xaden, touching her cheek.

"You both don't need to be here for this, go Catriona show the boy around."

He gave Xaden a nod.

"I don't need to worry do I? I'm hoping your father taught you well."

Even this far, Sebastian's magic and feats were known. Sebastian's grandmother had lived here before she'd followed Bran to Terresan to live with him.

She had not wanted to take away from the joyous occasion which was the mating of her son and his mate, but one of the main reasons behind coming there was to find alliances in this war. A war that was brewing, a war which didn’t seem as if an end was in sight.

Natalia stayed quiet as Celestine took over the roll, her fingers flexed at her side as she felt her shadows urging for release. Her anxiety was heightened, the worried fresh and weighing upon her.

Her attention snapped towards Ulysses when her shadows whispered he was looking her way, bowing her head only slightly in greeting.

“He is a good boy, you have no reason to worry.” She spoke up, stepping forwards as she looked to Xaden. “I’m sure Catriona can keep him in his place.”

"The detection of XBB.1.5 is not unexpected, following its recent detection in Australia and globally, and our Covid-19 response accounts for the emergence of new variants," the ministry said on Monday. Kraken was descended from the Omicron XBB subvariant, itself a cross between two earlier strains: BA.2.75 and BA.2.10.1. The World Health Organization said it has been detected in at least 31 other countries.
