'How do you pick the best performance in a film defined by literally dozens of them? Christopher Nolan assembled a murderer’s row of talent for "Oppenheimer," his grand historical drama about the birth of the atomic bomb and the consequences of its power. It contains a veritable smorgasbord of leading icons, character actors, former child star favorites, and faces you forgot you love so much. There’s certainly a case to be made for so many among this ensemble: the steely-eyed determination and rattled conscience of Cillian Murphy in the title role; Robert Downey Jr.’s charisma shattered by the petulance of bureaucratic squabbles; David Krumholtz as the warm friend whose pragmatism punctures his ideals. However, the face you leave the film remembering for days afterward comes from an actor whose character isn’t even given a name.
Alden Ehrenreich plays a Senate aide, a figure who is one of the many government workers standing behind and to the side of the head honchos helping to grease the wheels of power. He has been tasked with guiding Lewis Strauss (Robert Downey Jr.) through Senate confirmation hearings on his nomination as Secretary of Commerce to President Eisenhower's cabinet. Ehrenreich is essentially a PR guy, a guide for Strauss and the audience through the tangled web of Cold War-era D.C. and the front-stabbing figures who have turned politics into a battlefield. He is, by design, not that important. Dozens of other nameless aides are waiting around the corner to do this job. Ehrenreich just so happens to be there at the right/wrong time.
Being an audience avatar is often a thankless role in any film, and it’s a trope that Nolan often struggles with. Discussions of process and ideas often weigh down his films and inserting a figure of relatable naivety into this risks disrupting the narrative flow. "Oppenheimer" often gets away with not having one during the glut of the story since it’s so heavily focused on conversations about science, ethics, and consequences. The scenes with Strauss and Ehrenreich are a break from this, an insight into a post-Oppenheimer world and how it has impacted the system that helped to create him in the first place. Ehrenreich is not unaware, nor is he expected to play catch-up with Strauss and company. Rather, he’s the constant reminder that scientists did not do what happened at Los Alamos alone. That he is unnamed and a fictional creation of Nolan (a sharp contrast to a film populated by real historical players) hammers home the disposability of such an aide. Ehrenreich’s job is to blend in, to keep a straight face against the peacocking Strauss. It’s a role that could, too, have disappeared into the background, but Ehrenreich knows that the best scene stealers are the ones who react to the carnage.
Ehrenreich, a character actor with the face of a 1950s leading man, has always excelled in parts where he tempers his natural charisma with a dash of something sharper. In "Hail, Caesar!," he steals the show from one of the Coen Brothers’ starriest casts as Hobie Doyle, the adorably clueless singing cowboy the studio tries to reinvent as a Noel Coward-esque debonair leading man. He’s the safe port of sincerity in a storm of Hollywood cynicism. As the younger brother of the tempestuous Tetro in Francis Ford Coppola's indie drama, he is appealingly innocent yet imbued with the abrasive arrogance that only a dolt of a teenage boy could truly possess. Even in "Solo: A Star Wars Story," the unfairly maligned prequel of the new Disney/Lucasfilm era, Ehrenrich’s Han is less concerned with traditional hero expectations. Audiences seemed furious that he didn’t look or act exactly like Harrison Ford. Still, Ehrenreich understood the giddy enthusiasm of the pre-jaded space cowboy and how the character doesn’t work if he’s always cool (which Ford never was in the original trilogy, something fans often overlook.) The best Ehrenreich performances allow him to dig into humanity's absurdities and petty mundanities, offering either the freaky flipside or a welcome dose of warmth. It’s never as interesting to be cool when you can be weird, dark, or earnest.
The Senate aide is clearly used to being the quiet man in the room, the punching bag against whom others launch their egos. His smile is halfway between charm and smarm, with Ehrenreich excelling with those side glances at Strauss as he enters another rant about his battle of attrition with J. Robert Oppenheimer. Everything the aide says feels loaded with subtext, the ruthless efficiency of a worn-down Washington professional. He’s also used to dealing with political players with more bluster than substance, most evident when he has to appease Strauss without rocking the boat. There’s a deadpan quality to him, as though he’s used to being a babysitter more than an advisor. When Strauss reveals his hand and his selfishness thoroughly exposed, Ehrenreich's subtle reaction most effectively conveys the weight of this moment. It’s not so much that he feels betrayed—he’s clearly too much of a D.C. man to have ever been optimistic—but rather, he’s underwhelmed that years of machinations and supposed patriotism have boiled down to the equivalent of a playground tiff.
And it is Ehrenreich who gets the best line in the film. As Strauss gets ready to face the scrum of ravenous press after the Senate rejects his confirmation, Ehrenreich subtly hides his pleasure, but reveals enough to let Strauss know his feelings on the matter. Strauss is consumed by the possibility that Oppenheimer turned the scientific community against him, including Albert Einstein. He repeatedly returns to a perceived conversation between the two that must have made Strauss Einstein’s enemy. Before opening the door to the wolves of the media, Ehrenreich says, "Maybe they were talking about something more important." Uttered with such casual devastation, the nail in Strauss’ coffin confirms how the fate of the world often means little in the face of one man’s petty grievances. It’s probably for the best that Ehrenreich chose acting as his profession because he would be far too good as a politician.
"Oppenheimer" is, indeed, about far more important things than a politician’s job interview and the concerns of his nameless aide. The Manhattan Project exacerbated humanity’s inevitable self-annihilation, but for rooms full of suits and cigarettes, it was just another day at the office, another tool to be wielded less for destruction than personal bartering. It’s the aide, the one without a name or background or tangible connection to Oppenheimer’s work, who exposes that reality with a crooked smile and killer one-liner. Like a great scene-stealing supporting player, the aide is the one who cuts through the crap to seek the truth. Ehrenreich has long been great at that, and "Oppenheimer" is a welcome new zenith of his career. Here’s hoping there will be many more in the future.'

POLYCULE POLYCULE POLYCULE
I know I can ask for in person/over call but consider
I'm feral for this
SUPERNATURAL POLYCULE [the crowd goes wild with applause]
okay also tagging @nicola-writes and @wherearetheplants b/c you two showed interest as well hi <3
so this is kind of in progress rn because i am still deciding on whether or not to add a couple more members to the polycule, but for now this is what we got! going under the cut <3
for context, these are some major characters in my currently unnamed supernatural mystery wip <3 (also cw for a mention of ableism with one character)
Tumblr media
[Image Description: A picrew of my OC Henry Blackwell, a man with pale skin, dark curly hair, and a short dark beard. He has a nose ring, pierced ears, a pair of square-rimmed glasses, and uses a hearing aid. Henry is wearing a blue patterned button-up, a dark jacket with a fur-lined collar, and a black choker. He has a smirk on his face and is holding up one hand with a cigarette between two fingers. Behind him are the bisexual and polyamorous flags, with a white circle around his head. End ID.]
HENRY BLACKWELL - HE/HIM
Henry is the only completely normal human in the polycule! He's a private investigator who specializes in finding missing people, and he's a cocky shithead and I love him so much. He comes from a very wealthy family, but his family has all but disowned him for failing to live up to the successful standards of his siblings. Oh, and also for being an openly queer, mentally ill, disabled man. His parents suck, if that isn't obvious. Like, to be clear, he is still in contact with his family, but his parents have made it very clear that they're constantly on the verge of cutting him off financially.
In terms of that, Henry is hard of hearing, and he has ADHD and BPD! With the money he comes from, he has had access to accommodations and aids that a lot of other people may not, and that is something he's very aware of. Henry is kind of the epitome of the Class Traitor™ vibe, but his background still comes into play in his lack of experience with a lot of real-world matters.
The story centers primarily around Henry as the protagonist, and like. When I say he's a cocky shithead, I mean that affectionately. He genuinely does want to help people, he also just thinks he's hot shit.
I also have a lot of thoughts about Henry's siblings because they're very important to the story as well, but I'm just gonna focus on the polycule here.
Tumblr media
[Image Description: A picrew of my OC Eden Lomidze, an AU of my D&D character Eden Linnaeus. This version of Eden is a young man with tan, freckled skin, a scar on one cheek, and thick, wavy blond hair pulled back into a ponytail. He has gold stud earrings and a serious, disappointed expression on his face. Eden wears a black baseball cap, a yellow patterned button-up, and a dark jacket. Behind him are the mlm and trans flags, with a white circle around his head. End ID.]
EDEN LOMIDZE - HE/HIM
As it says on the tin, this is a human AU of my D&D character Eden Linnaeus! At least, that's what he's starting as. Yes I can have multiple characters named Eden. I just think that's a good name <3 And D&D Eden is one of my favorite OCs that I have rn so <3
Anyway, this Eden is, for the most part, a normal human, but his experimentation with magic and the supernatural has slowly been corrupting him into something a little less human. He also might be a little bit possessed, but no one's too worried about that just yet. Though he's a pHD student studying for a degree in biochemistry, he has a day job as a full-time clerk for a local corner store. He's incredibly tired, and he's basically the store manager without the actual title or pay.
Eden has fibromyalgia and is autistic, and he may also have NPD but that is something I'd like to do more research into before saying definitively. He uses a pair of forearm crutches as mobility aids much of the time!
Tumblr media
[Image Description: A picrew of my OC Pierce (?), a woman with brown skin and a partially shaved head. She has long, pink hair that hangs loosely around her shoulders and a large grin on her face, showing her sharp fangs. She wears a black collared shirt, a pink vest, red tie, and dusty brown jacket, as well as a pair of pink heart-shaped sunglasses. She has one hand held up in a peace sign. Behind her are the pansexual and polyamorous flags, with a white circle around her head. End ID.]
PIERCE/ANGEL/PAX/ABEL/LENORE/??? - SHE/IT/THEY
Here she is, the werewolf of many names!!! So I'm gonna just call her Pierce here, but part of the joke with her as a character is that she kinda hoards names. Which, like, good for you, queen. It's unclear what her actual name is and she's glad to continue making that unclear. She isn't going to tell anyone. She also likes to jokingly call herself a furry, as a cute little reference to the werewolf thing.
I'm still working out how lycanthropy works in this particular universe, but just know that, for the most part, Pierce has a generally good handle on its lycanthropy and doesn't view the whole thing as a curse or a problem. Its lycanthropy is an intrinsic part of who it is, and that's what matters at the end of the day, even if sometimes that makes things harder for it.
Pierce and Eden are pretty good friends, though she's a bit older than him and significantly more chaotic. When she first meets Henry, she doesn't like him, but she very quickly comes to respect him. In terms of who Pierce is, well, that's for her to know and you to find out :3c

FAN THEORY SUPPOSITION SUNDAY: The Warden
Tumblr media
SPOILER WARNING!  It’s still a thing, and, if you haven’t yet, you still need to watch Megamind.  (If you have seen it already, however, you need to see it again.  Because it’s awesome.)
Yes, yes, the post is three days late this time.  Real life has to take priority and such. So sue me.  (Don’t really do that.  LOL!)
For that same reason—or more accurately because this week has exhausted me—I will attempt to make this post shorter than usual.  We’ll see how that goes.  My money is on “not well.”  LOL.
Anyway, today we’re going to look at a subject that often divides the Megamind fandom: the Warden and his relationship with Megamind. There are several fan theories—I mean, suppositions—surrounding this, but I’m going to be focusing on a few of the main ones.
The first of these is that the Warden was actually a father figure to Megamind when he was young, allowing him to be raised in jail not out of cruelty or disinterest, but because it was the only way to keep him safe from shadowy government agencies that otherwise would have performed all sorts of experiments on the blue alien.  This both accounts for why a child would be allowed to grow up in what is clearly a high-security prison for dangerous adult criminals—something that, admittedly, needs some sort of explanation—and fits with widely accepted sci-fi and comic book tropes. (From Area 51 to mysterious “Men in Black” type organizations, fiction is full of government agencies created to study extraterrestrial life and technology.)  Some even go so far as to suggest that the Warden may have tried to adopt Megamind officially, but was blocked from doing so by these same entities. On top of this, such an idea also offers room to re-imagine the Warden as a much more interesting, complex, and sympathetic character.  Indeed, there has been some excellent fan fiction written about this pseudo-parental relationship.
Tumblr media
Art: Fathers And Sons Day by tabbydragon
There is some evidence to support this.  The first is that, although the Warden behaves harshly toward Megamind in the “jail-break” scene near the beginning of the film, Megamind himself seems to be trying to engage in a playful exchange: pranking the older man, wishing him a good morning, and even teasing him.  While some say that this is simply Megamind’s personality as well as his determination to always appear indominable, others suggest that, perhaps, the blue man is trying to recapture a lost amiability between himself and the prison Warden.  It is possible that, when he was younger and less villainous, Megamind might have exchanged friendly jokes and greetings with the man in charge of the jail he called home.  It has even been suggested that the Warden is so hard on the blue man at the beginning of the film not because he hates Megamind, but because Megamind’s life choices have hurt and alienated his father figure. This idea finds some support in the facts that, when Megamind leaves jail to confront Titan, the Warden wished him good luck, and at the end of the movie, that same man seems genuinely happy as he watches the television broadcast of his one-time prisoner being named Defender of Metro City.  Finally, there is some evidence from the comics which, although not truly considered canon, as I’ve mentioned before, do offer some material for fan theories.  In the “episode” entitled Bad Minion! Bad! Megamind runs into the Warden in a bar, and the latter offers the former advice.  There is certainly a somewhat fatherly feel to the scene.
The second theory is exactly the opposite: that the Warden either did not care for or outright disliked the former supervillain.  Unfortunately, as fun as the Warden/Father Figure concept is, this second, darker idea has far stronger evidence to support it in the film itself.  (Try not to hate me, everyone.)  These clues range from the obvious to the subtle, but there are quite a few of them to be found.
During the first scene in which we see Warden interact with Megamind, he doesn’t behave like an angry, disappointed father—at least not a good one.  He isn’t merely surly toward Megamind; he is absolutely nasty. The Warden verbally condemns the alien, telling him that he’ll “always be a villain,” and essentially steals what he believes is a gift for the blue man, even taunting him by saying: “I think I’ll keep it!”  This hardly seems like the actions of someone who once felt any sort of affection for the extraterrestrial.  That same portion of the movie holds another clue as well: the screens monitoring Megamind’s brain activity.  Indeed, in original concept art for the film, the system appears both more invasive and more nightmarish.  It seems that, far from protecting Megamind, the Warden may have actually allowed him to be experimented upon.
Tumblr media
Next, there is the newspaper article at the beginning of the title sequence, which bears the headline “Hometown Boy Makes Bad.” It’s hard to see what the paper says, of course, even if you bother to really notice it, but luckily for us Liz (Demishock) wrote a wonderfully thorough blog post which, among other things, provides a transcript of the “news story.”  In it, the Warden is quoted as referring to young Megamind as a born villain as well as abnormal.
You don't know this kid. I've watched the little criminal since he was in diapers. This kid is just a bad seed. I've got experienced, hardened criminals in here who are afraid of him - I mean, have you seen the size of his head?…  It's not like he's a normal kid… I mean, have you gotten a good look at his gigantic blue head? I don't know where you come from, but where I come it's just not right.
Granted, there seems to be some truth to what the Warden is saying, as the article also mentions that Megamind, who can hardly have been more than seven years old at the time, has basically been put into solitary confinement for the safety of other prisoners following an unnamed incident, adding that the other inmates “refused to point fingers for fear of retaliation.”  (This fits with the fan theory that young Megamind would have had to both fight and develop a fearsome reputation in order to protect himself. You can read more about that in the post How Strong is Megamind?) However, the Warden seems to dwell a lot on the fact that Megamind looks alien, and he displays an obvious dislike for the young boy.
Finally, there is evidence hidden in the school scene, although it’s easy to miss. In an amazing two-part video series, Megamind: A City of Deception. YouTuber The Theorizer illustrates several hidden clues about Megamind’s early life and how it it led him to embrace villainy.  (I will very likely write another post going into more detail about that at a later date.)  One thing that The Theorizer discovered is a seemingly innocuous detail in the background during the popcorn scene.  Take a moment to examine the images below.  Look closely at the blackboard and you’ll see a paper cut out of a school bus.  Look even more closely at that and you’ll find something odd: the bus is full of crayon-drawn children except for one figure: an adult male, riding in the back of the bus, who looks suspiciously like the Warden as he appears at the beginning of the film.
Tumblr media
In a movie where so much attention is given to small things—I mean, seriously, the animation team actually went through the trouble to write a news story for a paper that was on the screen less than ten seconds—this cannot possibly be a coincidence.  (You can learn more about the artists’ amazing dedication to detail in my post What’s Hidden in the Animation?)  Although it is vaguely possible that Megamind, painfully aware of how much his appearance was despised, chose to draw the Warden’s face instead of his own, most fans believe there is a darker reason for this oddity.
Think about it: the Li’l Gifted School for Li’l Gifted Kids is built close by a jail with a strangely similar name: Metro City Prison for the Criminally Gifted.   It’s clearly a small academy, yet the only two known aliens in the city—who, by the way, have extremely different social backgrounds—both just happen to attend there.  And now the prison warden appears to be somehow involved with the elementary school?  It’s bizarre.  Add to this the fact that the young alien adopted by a privileged family—a boy who possessed super-strength and laser vision—seemed inclined to be a bully, (as is made obvious by the kickball scene,) and a disturbing fan theory emerges.  Adults realized that Wayne Smith, the child who would eventually become Metro Man, might prove dangerous if left unchecked, and came up with a plan to turn him into a hero instead.  Wayne was showered with praise, conditioning him to seek public approval, but a superhero needs a nemesis.  The strange-looking, unwanted blue boy who’d already been labeled a criminal would have seemed like the obvious choice.  If this is true, then Megamind was purposefully, albeit covertly, groomed to become a supervillain from a young age, and the Warden played a major role in doing that.
Tumblr media
So there you have it.  Two competing fan theories concerning the Warden’s connection with Megamind.  Both have some evidence supporting them, and there are fans who are firmly dedicated to one or the other.  Which is true?  Did the Warden care for Megamind like a son but distance himself when the boy turned to villainy?  Or did he judge and despise Megamind but come around to liking him when he finally realized what sort of person the blue man was deep down?  The fact is that those questions can be argued for hours on end.  No matter which of these suppositions you prefer, however, the mere fact that even a minor supporting character is complex enough to offer room for this debate speaks to the impressive amount of work and devotion that went into creating this amazing animated film.

Repaying in Kind Melodies
Summary: Creature comforts were not something the Guard often got to indulge in. Theirs was a severe and inflexible reality, so hobbies, talents and personal possessions were just as hard to express and obtain as their own restrained individuality. Still, Olly found that when spared the kindness, one should always repay their dues... Especially to their dearest friends.
[Merry Christmas @british-hero, I give you wholesome bonding time between our Coruscant Guard boys! I hope Rhythm isn't too out of character!]
THIS STORY IS NOW ON AO3
---
Tumblr media
---
At first glance, no one would ever be able to tell that Olly felt anything but the perpetual state of disgruntled discontent that his tone of voice often expressed. He was every bit the model Guardsman that he should be. Quiet, unshakeable, monotone and indistinguishable from his fellow Riot Troopers. Always standing straight, kit in good condition, shield and baton at the ready. Just another number among thousands. Except people often forgot that Olly was also a clone. Human. And humans had interests. Special interests. His just so happened to be one that a fellow vod seemed to revolve his entire identity around.
Creature comforts were not something the Guard often got to indulge in. Theirs was a severe and inflexible reality, so hobbies, talents and personal possessions were just as hard to express and obtain as their own restrained individuality. Still, Rhythm had a privilege that Olly envied greatly: The capacity to be more than their world allowed. To be able to enjoy what he enjoyed without it being an immediate danger to his safety. No one in the Guard wore their name or rank quite like his vod'ika did (not even the commanders), and Olly found this as exasperating as he found it to be fitting of his vod. Rhythm was loud, in a contradictory sort of way that didn't involve being noisy. Among brothers he was certainly noticeable, but also very soft and calming. An overall delight to be around. A sentiment Olly only ever felt when around his batchmates. Most importantly, Rhythm knew the thing Olly most enjoyed, and knew it well. Music.
"I'm not the liveliest of gents here." His vod'ika once told him "But I feel at peace when I have my playlists in the background. They help me focus on my work." "I see..." He hadn't understood him in the slightest, unsure why a bunch of sounds combined into nonsense would be anything but distracting. But then Rhythm had shared his music with him and he'd felt something... Something good.
"This here is the guitar." Another time he'd shown him one of the instruments he'd acquired from a source that remained unnamed (although he suspected a certain senator aide to be the one getting the communications officer these things). A good Guardsman would have snatched the contraband. But there were no such thing as good Guardsman. Only the facade of such a thing. "I've been learning to play it so I can make my own music." "Is it as annoying as the ukulele you showed me last time? Or the recorder? Or the clarinet?" He'd deadpanned in reply, but he felt that spark of goodness that came with a hint of curiosity. He wanted to know what it sounded like. "Eh, depends on the type of guitar. This is a traditional one. The electric ones sound different." Rhythm's smile always reached his eyes when it came to discussing his most special interest. He was subtle in the way he emoted, and Olly understood this more than anyone. Visible emotions could be exploited. Protecting themselves in a mask of stoicism was the only way to survive on Coruscant.
"So...What did you think of that one?" Yet another time, another break to share in the other's company, and a new playlist to review. His vod'ika was testing new genres it seemed. "It's... Not as indigestible as the last one..." The somber lullabies had filled him with melancholies feelings. A nostalgic want of the short years he'd been a clueless cadet. Yearning for the company of Pretty Boy and Lichtenberg, who were chasing the glory of frontline duties far away from the horrors of the Senate and public discontent. Away from the predatory eyes of the chancellor, and the broken longing of the Guard's ruined spirits. "I figured you'd like this one. You're always humming that nursery rhyme the Alphas and older vode used to murmur to us when we were younglings." Rhythm nodded. "I've always wondered why." "Hm... I suppose it feels..." He paused briefly to scratch the prominent scar on his face. "It feels like home." "Yeah... Music tends to do that. It's why I like it so much." Rhythm agreed. "Tell you what. If I get a little better at the guitar, I'll play one of these for you. Your most favourite one, even!" "That sounds like quite the task. Wherever will you find the time to practice?" Forgetting himself briefly, Olly let himself grin mischievously. A rarity reserved for his batch brothers only. But Rhythm was the kind of person you felt at ease around. That you considered to be as close to you as any other sibling of the same lot. "I'll manage. A promise is a promise, and me? I'm promising you a guitar cover of your favourite lullaby." He never doubted his friend would fail to do as he set out to do. Sadly, the chance to do so was not one Rhythm was ever given... Not when the Republic fell. Not when the Empire rose. Not when the Guard was butchered and destroyed by the Sith Lord in black armour. Not when Olly and the few Riot Trooper vode he could save were fleeing off into planets uncharted. In the middle of the chaos, Olly had never felt so alone.
---
They'd settled on Epifania. A backwater planet that was almost straight out of one of those older Wild West holos that Pretty Boy had once tried to get him to watch. The locals wore hats, rode burden animals, and preferred wagons to standard hovercraft. The weapons of choice were slug throwers and knives, and rather than bars there were saloons. Sith-spitting saloons that smelled like tooka piss... It was an absolute shithole of the most boring kind. The perfect place to hide remnants of the Coruscant Guard. "You're still practicing?" One of the other "turtles" stared up at him from where he was tending to his shield. Scrutinising Olly and the precious cargo he'd managed to swipe from a poorly supervised market. A deep mahogany brown guitar that he'd decorated with the Guard's symbol in white paint. "Who are you even going to play for?" "For myself." Olly responded calmly as he strummed. "For our brothers. For tips perhaps..." "You can do that?" The Riot Trooper sounded skeptical. "Yes. I've seen civvies doing so, to earn a quick credit or two..." Olly shrugged. "We certainly could use the money. Work has been scarce as of late." "Not many security jobs needed when there's apparently a new sheriff in town. Kriffing bastard came with a deputy and everything..." The curious vod'ika grumbled in displeasure. "Perhaps this is a sign that we should branch out..." "To what? We're soldiers. Guardsmen. Unless we're looking at mercenary work or armed robberies, we're not gonna get any luck on that front, ori'vod."
Getting credits was indeed an issue... Which was why he was practicing so much. He wanted so badly to provide for his little brothers, but what could he do when there was no one paying for protection anymore? A sign at the saloon for an entertainer had been his last hope. So was this guitar. The instrument his lost friend had introduced him to. Rhythm was missed every day, and Olly despaired at whatever may have happened to his freckled and musically inclined brother, but he had to be pragmatic. He had to make sure his hobby was of use, in more than just providing some kind of comfort. Imagine his reaction then, when on the day he finally began playing for tips as a trial of sorts, when he'd gotten more than just a couple of credits to take home...
Olly's fingers weren't clumsy in the way they had been when he'd first begun teaching himself to play his stolen guitar. His memory was also quite sharp, even if he'd only heard the song he was playing a handful of times. The somber lullaby that had resonated with his wounded soul was one he'd practiced for countless hours. It came out sweet, in the way only a carefully plucked guitar string could sound, and yet so terribly burdened by sadness. He poured his very soul into playing. Head bowed, brim of his hat shielding his face from spectators and harsh sunlight. The clinking of credits falling into a metal cup the only indicator that his was not a fruitless endeavour. And then a pair of boots entered his field of vision. The sharp note of a more than generous tip landing into the cup, nearly toppling it over. He was startled out of playing entirely by the development. "Oh... Sorry. Didn't mean to startle you!" That voice. It couldn't be... "You play very nicely. I had a friend who really liked that song."
Looking up, mismatched eyes met with a strikingly familiar pair of rich caf coloured eyes. There was silence. Recognition. Disbelief. Then hope.
"Olly?" "Rhythm?"
Of all the backwater shithole planets they could have both ended up on, Olly had never imagined this sort of astronomical coincidence could lead them both to this one. Only Jedi ever got that lucky. Clones? Not so much.
"....You learned to play." Rhythm seemed to be in awe. "I did." He confirmed. "You're really good at it." There was that familiar subtle smile of his. The one that always reached his eyes when ever they shared their mutual love for music. "...I never had the privilege to get that song you promised me, so I made due..." He smiled back. "Perhaps a reversal of roles is at hand. Let me play for you instead." "Yeah... I'd like that vod. I'd like that a lot."
When a Guardsman was spared some kindness, he should always repay in kind. Especially to his dearest friend and brother. Olly was glad Rhythm was still around for him to repay his dues.

BLFF FIC #4
Best Colours For Your Portrait by @sevenfeetpirates
fic link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/34534078
A beautiful omega with an undeniable fate. Mysterious cliffs holding back a dark past. A clueless painter who doesn't know what he's walking into. If these lines intrigue you, go check this fic out!
Let me start by saying that I haven't watched the movie, so if there's any discrepancy in this post, feel free to comment and clarify!
The story starts off when Harry, an alpha painter, reaches a remote island to paint an expensive portrait of an unnamed omega. He learns a few things that pique his curiosity, but it all fades in the background when he meets the beautiful Louis Tomlinson.
"When I started walking behind you on the cliff I was looking at the surroundings. How the cliff was covered with rocks, plants and grass. How the sea was roaring with her wave and the wind so strong against my skin. Everything was overwhelming in nature that day. But-" Harry takes Louis' hands in both hands as he continues, "-your scent, my dear believe me was the only true feeling of nature that day."
One remarkable feature of this fic is how this author refers to past events in the story itself and brings them back to weave it together in the present- so don't miss anything!
He steps down the stairs, his hand slowly trailing along the balustrade. He observes the young master standing at the very end of the stairs. His back is turned towards Harry. He has a blue cloak and his face hidden under the hood. He doesn't turn when Harry steps behind him. Instead, he starts walking out the door and Harry starts following him.
Trust me, once you start reading, it's so easy to get lost in the world this fic takes you to- the descriptions are live and imaginative, the dialogue dramatic and poetic in the best sense. It's like the perfect combination of dark academia and royal-cottage core forbidden love?! If that made sense...(I spend too much time on Pinterest, clearly).
"There you go sweet omega. You did it," Harry cheers for him proudly and he smiles shyly having his alpha praise him for such a small accomplishment. But Louis is happy nonetheless making him purr like a kitten contentedly. Harry chuckles at Louis, pleased with how warm the omega is now.
Not a lot of abo au's manage to represent all aspects of the dynamics clearly in fics, as it gets difficult to merge these traits of the characters with an au which is so clearly set in a different world without changing some fundamental part of the story. Hence, I was so impressed when I found the subtle ways the author entwined their secondary genders into their personality, and consequently, their interactions. From small things like Harry growling when his inner alpha is insecure, Louis' whines for attention to bigger things like an alpha's possessiveness and an omega's demanding yet demure nature, the author did a commendable job.
Louis' eyes flashes and they dim low. His smile falls and his eyes cast low when he feels Harry staring at him too much. His heart aches to feel Harry staring at him now when he used to crave for it the past few days. He thought it was different but now it hurts everywhere.
The characters are fleshed out so well that the angst will definitely tug on your heartstrings and keep you hooked. Their nicknames for each other are so adorable too 😢
As a reader, the first chapter felt a bit choppy to me at times, the dialogue a little obscure. There's not much development or insight offered into the relationship between Harry and Louis, or their feelings either. However, the second chapter is where the story picks up, and so does the relationship between our heroes. The ending, though perfectly happy, left me slightly confused pertaining to the logistics- the how and the why. But I leave it to the author's discretion since this isn't a mystery, it's a romance!
Lastly, my favorite facet of the story- the subtext of the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. I won't say much, I don't want to spoil anything for you- I would like you to have the "oh my god" moment when you read it!
songs i associate with this fic:
1. tolerate it by Taylor Swift (because duh! also- the title of this fic is so APTLY CHOSEN!!!)
2. Honey, I by Wes Reeve
3. Heat Waves by Glass Animals

Ok so, I don't think I've seen anyone anywhere talking about that – probably because it is a ridiculous detail when compared to the immensity of the Leijiverse.
There are multiple characters presented back and forth in various movies and shows directed/produced by Matsumoto. Often, the depiction of said characters varies in time (changes in their appearance, even sometimes in personality, voice). Yet, some of them are quite easy to recognise from one media to another. For some others, especially background characters, they suffer a lot more transformations – eventually leading to the creation of a whole new character.
My point being :
The leader of the Lametallian resistance in Adieu Galaxy Express (AGE) is the same character as the Lieutenant Bernbarrel in Space Symphony Maetel (SSM).
Tumblr media
> Starting with the more visible : the overall appearance of the character. Well, in both case we have a tall, huge, stocky, muscular man. Rectangle shaped, broad shoulders. A bunch of characteristics we often see in side characters (as Grenadier in CWZ) who are "brutal" fighters. The facial hair is quite important as well, since both possess a well furnished moustache, a triangle shaped beard pointing downside (unlike other characters who have a beard following strictly their jawline, thus making it rectangular or diamond shaped) and eyebrows linked directly to their hair. In the same way as for the Illumidas' designs, these men are quite hairy – at temple level, the hair and eybrows are connected, as if one was the continuation of the other.
Finally, the missing eye. As a reminder, in SSM ep 11, we see that Bernbarrel got injured during the big battle against upcoming Promethium's troops. He's wearing bandages over his right eye after the fight, and that's how we see him till the end (not present in last two episodes 12 and 13). Why would SSM bother giving us such trifling details on a character we won't see afterwards ? My hypothesis is that this was a clin d'oeil (sans vilain jeu de mots) to the unnamed character in AGE.
Tumblr media
> Secondly, where and when we see the character in AGE. No name is given to him in the movie (thus, there are no links we can assume from that), he appears on screen for less than five minutes in the entire piece. However, we can still gather some crucial evidences. He's the leader of Lametal's last resistance against Promethium's mechanical empire. He believes in the human courage and its sheer strength fueled by determination and will of heart. He's old, and since Lametallians age differently than earthlings, we can assume he might truly be old, and has seen a lot of past battles and defeats. Doesn't it remind you of someone else ?
In SSM, Bernbarrel is the loyal right hand man to the Commander Leopard. The latter is a pious defendant of the human cause, making motivational speech praising mankind's natural willpower. He clearly said he would fight till death to bring Promethium's tyranny to an end, even if he were to be the last man standing. Bernbarrel stood always next to Leopard's, as a shadow, as a support. We can infer his disparition made a severe impact on Bernbarrel. There's actually a quite emotional scene, at the end of ep 11, where we see the Lieutenant crying while holding Leopard's beret (post death). This is actually the last time we see him. A bitter sensation. Yet, it is evident that Bernbarrel will make sure to perpetuate Leopard's fight and message, until he himself dies.
Tumblr media
This is exactly the feeling transmitted by the unnamed character in AGE. Still fighting even though the situation is almost helpless. Always believing in human's capacities, always keeping the head high up despite the losses, despite the dangers. Despite the apparent, unchangeable defeat.
To conclude, knowing that SSM (2004) was created many years later AGE (1981), it is very plausible that the unnamed background character has been revamped to become more important in the newest (despite taking place in the past) version. Maybe as an hommage, or the will to create more logical links between the medias, who knows. Anyways, it is always fascinating to pick up on such interesting details.
I could add a lot more to that, but I'm running short on time these days and really wanted to get my ideas down for good. I might expend the post some more later.
Anyways, don't hesitate to comment or anything. I'd love to hear other people's opinions (if anyone ever thought it would be interesting to notice lmao)!

Commissions Are Open! (New and Updated Version!)
Commissions are currently Open!
My writing background and preferences!
My Nickname is Bumble Booty or Baby Blue, feel free to use either! My specialty is dark/gore, body horror, psychological horror, and NSFW! However, I will absolutely do non-dark as well, so if light and fluffy is more your preference- I’m still interested in writing it!
I have a Bachelors Degree with a Double Major and a minor- Psychology (specialized in abnormal), Philosophy (integrative study with Psychology), and Criminology (minor and main focus being crime and homicide). As for other useful background, I actually work for a movie store (and one other place, but that one doesn’t give me plot bunnies)!
What that means for you is- don’t be shy with any prompt. I’ve probably been in contact with it before through my studies, personal research, or work-related exposure!
My specialty is Transformers, but I have recently fallen for the Hazbin Hotel fandom. However, I have not written for the latter as of yet. I will most likely get into Hazbin Hotel very soon though! If you want something outside of these fandoms, please expect a slight delay as I research the fandom. Please ask though, as I may still take it on with sufficient info!
Disclaimer: On most occasions, I typically stick to more canon-style fics. It is simply easier for me to work with plausible situations that can expand out from there- however, I might still do more crack-style if I feel confident enough. I will also do original works if I have enough information!
What I will Likely/Certainly Reject: These are subtypes I do not feel confident in/have had bad experiences with/ will not touch with a 10 foot pole.
Pedophilia.
While age-differences are perfectly okay, molesting a child isn’t. All characters in my work WILL be 18+ for NSFW fics, or you can politely take your business elsewhere.
Because sometimes this apparently needs to be said, Age Regression is not Pedophilia. If your preferred characters are of consensual age and this is a psychological fic where the boundaries are CLEARLY set, please feel free to message me. If your character is a child being abused as an adult, do not. I can tell the difference.
Farting/ Flatulence fics.
This is a strange one, but I have had strange experiences with this subtype and those that request it. I have no opinion on your kinks or likes, but I will no longer be accepting fics with this as a PRIMARY FOCUS.
If it happens to be something that might come up- for instance, an IBS coping fic, a period fic, an autopsy/drowning fic, etc- I will happily discuss this being an option as far as accurately describing the symptoms/struggles of those that suffer with these conditions/fates. Do not hesitate to discuss it with me, the worst you will be told is no.
Unusually Predatory/ Targeted Hate Fics.
I am well aware of the trend of shaming someone/ channeling a targeted threat through popular media, and I will not help damage someone’s psyche. If I have reason to believe you are using this fic to try to shame a previous significant other/ trying to use your fic and its exposure to target/mislead someone into what could be a psychologically damaging situation, I will not be working with you. Deciding this is my discretion, and if it is truly not your intent I apologize but stand by my decision. As mentioned prior, If it is not your intent go ahead and email me with your prompt anyway- the worst you will be told is no!
Any Other Fic for Personal Reasons.
I am a person with my own history, and I reserve the right to deny a fic if it strikes too close to home.
My Pricing, Payments, Refunds, and Alterations!
Pricing: I charge in USD on a rising scale for minimum word counts. 50 cents per 100 words, up to $4.50 for 999. After that, it's a flat $5 for 1,000-word increments. So: $5 for 1,000 words, $10 for 2,000 words, $15 for 3,000, etc. Final Pricing will be established before I start working, but I am very flexible! Should you want something changed/altered while I’m working on the draft, please contact me!
Payments: Payments are accepted through Venmo upon completion AND APPROVAL of your work.
Refunds: Refunds will not be served, as I usually don’t accept payment until after the work is completed and approved.
Alterations: If we decide on an alternative prompt after or during the first draft, I will consider this the new commission and write with a new/altered price agreed on by both of us through DM/Email. I will mostly stick with my standard pricing, but any oddities will be discussed privately should something happen on my end to cause a delay.
Side note: I do not have a maximum word count, and if I go over it's ON ME. My Prices are for a minimum, not a maximum.
Request form!
When contacting me about a commission, please send me this general format for ease of keeping everything straight! If you do not, I will reply with this copied in so I know exactly what you want and can ask for more information wherever needed!
Characters: (This is who you want to see! If you want couples, please mark them in the x/x format, with non-couples listed singularly and separated by a comma.)
EX: Prowl/Jazz, Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Unnamed Mecha.
Basic Plot: (SFW/NSFW, what you want to happen. This is the main idea I’m working with!)
EX: NSFW, Jazz returns from a mission in a dangerous head space. He is fairly violent to everyone, and is searching for Prowl due to his ability to calm his coding. Optimus and Bumblebee are helping Prowl contain the rouge Ops mech before he offlines half the base.
Sub-Plot: (Kinks/Small Details/ Triggers you want to see. If going into more detail on a particular thing, put a hyphen after the general descriptor and continue. End this with another hyphen, then continue listing if you have more!)
EX: Pinning, Biting, Clawing, Mild Body Horror- Maybe Optimus gets some tubing cut loose? Or a random, unnamed Mech meeting a foul end after startling Jazz?  I just want it to be obvious how dangerous Jazz is in this state!- Feral Behavior, Aftercare, and Post-Recovery Apology.
Other: Things you DO NOT WANT TO SEE AT ALL. Please clarify in the same way you clarified in Sub-plot. This is especially important if you are requesting Gore/Trauma fics.
******Please be clear on this!!!! This can be as broad as "no gore" to as specific as the word "moist". Please understand that it is not necessary for you to explain why, nor do you have to give me any reasoning should I ask for you to expand/elaborate. I do, however, reserve the right to ask if similar words/situations would also be off-limits. As mentioned in the personal background, I have studied Psychology and I do not want to be the reason you expand a phobia or traumatic event.  PLEASE REMEMBER THIS IS A SERVICE YOU ARE PAYING FOR, AND IT IS MY DUTY TO FILL THIS SERVICE IN A WAY THAT YOU ENJOY! Not put you in a bad head space or trigger you!******
EX: Gutting, Descriptive Bone/strut snapping, Overly Possessive Language- especially the word ‘pet’ or other dehumanizing possessive language along those lines- Unsanitary, and the word “Moist”- similar words such as ‘damp’ or ‘sweltering’ are acceptable (I just don’t like that word).
How To Reach Me!
Email: My work email is “[email protected]”- please put ‘commission’ somewhere in the subject line so I know to look ASAP. I usually respond pretty quick, but I do hold two jobs. Expect an answer within 24 hours. I will reply to the email you contact me with if I have further questions and clarification, or if I’m accepting/rejecting the commission right away!
If you do not receive an answer in 24 hours, feel free to email me again and explain you did not get an answer- it might be a filtering problem that I need to fix!
DM: Direct Messages are also acceptable here, but I will warn that I often forget to check! Email is more reliable for a faster reply, but I will do my best do accommodate those that don’t want to/ can’t email!
Please keep to the same format as you would for an email, but feel free to break it up into sizable portions since messages read a bit weird. I don’t mind the spam messages, I'm that kind of texter myself!
Priority/Timeframe, Rejecting, and Posting/Delivery!
Priority/Timeframe: Commissions will take top priority over other writing work, and if I happen to get two at once it will be by order of receiving. I strive to have 2,000 words and below done per a one week period, anything more than that I will discuss with you over email/pms due to job balancing.
Rejecting: I would like to mention that I still reserve my rights to reject commissions if I feel I am unable to complete them in a manner worthy of accepting payment, or if I feel I cannot give enough personal effort due to work/personal qualms.
Posting/Delivery: Upon completion of the first draft, I will send you the draft script in a downloaded document (usually .docx format) if you like the draft/bones, please respond with any alterations you would like to see! This is additions, subtractions, substitutes, or changes! You can do anything as small as a word, to as large as the entire fic as long as it is agreed upon.
After this is cleared, I will go back through the fic and add flourish and final details. After that is the proofreading phase, then I will send you the completed fic. If you are not happy with the final fic, please respond with what you would like changed and I will GLADLY fix the issues!
DISCLAIMER: I will not post your finished product without your permission if it is a payment-finalized product! This means that if you have paid for it, it is yours to keep. If I really liked the fic, I might ask your permission to post it to my AO3 Account with it either listed as a gift fic to your AO3 account, or with a notice placed in the notes at the top of the page that this was a commissioned piece, followed by your username/"anonymous" if you would not like it known that it was yours.
HOWEVER: I ask that you do not post these works as if they were your own! I work very hard on my commissions and put substantial research into each piece, and I am more than willing to signal boost you on the work as well for sponsoring it! If you have a private archive or something similar that you intend on posting it to, please mention it to me during the initial emails/dms and we can discuss it. (I highly doubt I will mind though, I can understand some organization quirks!)

Apprentice April: Noreis Lemereaux
1. The Basics.  What is your character’s name? How old are they?  How tall are they?  Skin color?  Eye color?  Hair color?  Gender identification?
Noreis Lemereaux: age 20, 5′ 6″, medium brown skin, gray-green eyes, dark brown hair, transman
2.  Love Interest.  Who does your character love?  What attracted them to that particular LI?
Asra Asra Asra Asra!!! Noreis is the OC that most closely matches the canon apprentice background, although he didn’t come to Vesuvia until he was 15 so they don’t have quite the history. Reis loves Asra’s calm presence, his protectiveness, his humor, and how open he is to whatever his partner wants.
3. Familiar.  Does your character have a familiar?  How did they meet?
Surprise surprise, he does not. If he did, it would be a woodmouse (as yet unnamed), and they would’ve met when Noreis was living with his foster parents Jamila and Perinon.
4. Hobbies.  What kinds of things does your character like to do for fun?
Noreis absolutely adores astronomy. Anything to do with space, he’s there. His most prized possessions are his astrolabe and his telescope. He also has an affinity for the ocean and spends a lot of time in or around it. And while it’s canon that Asra does the cooking, in my canon it’s all Noreis.
5. Hidden talents.  Is there something neat that your character can do? Tie a cherry stem into a knot with their tongue?  Say any word backwards perfectly?
He’s particularly adept at water magic, like his partner, but otherwise, he has fewer hidden talents than hidden interests.
6. Magical talents.  Is there a specific type of magic that your character excels at?  Any magic they aren’t so great at?  Or do they actually shy away from magic altogether?
See above re: water magic. Whether that’s from Asra’s tutelage, his love of the sea, or both, he’s very good at manipulating, producing, and otherwise magicking with water. He’s also an extraordinary healer. Conversely, he isn’t so good at anything illusory or combat-centric.
7. Interaction.  How does your character typically interact with people?
Noreis is friendly but shy. He doesn’t talk much even around people he’s comfortable with, and sometimes can read as standoffish. He really likes people, though, as long as they’re gentle with him.
8. Romance.  What is something that your character and their LI love to do together?  How do they show affection?
Asra and Noreis travel a lot together. Reis loves seeing different views of the stars, and Asra loves seeing him love seeing different views of the stars. They also go swimming and cook together a fair amount, and just lounge around, taking naps whenever they want and enjoying each other’s company.
9. Travel.  Does your character like to travel outside of Vesuvia?  How often?  For how long? What kinds of things do they do away from home?
Noreis’ home village is a small fishing hamlet on the shores of the Sea of Persephia. He travelled about halfway to Vesuvia in the company of his father as a pre-teen, stopping at a farm owned by an elderly couple in the heartlands of Venterre. Since then, he’s gone all over the world, and other worlds, with Asra. Noreis loves to travel (as long as he can bring his telescope).
10. WTF.  Has anything just…weird ever happened to your character?  Something that made them stop and go “What just happened?!”
Well, his father did try to kill him once. With a butcher knife. Camierre went mad with grief after losing his wife, Noreis’ mother, when she died giving birth to him and his twin brother. Though they were never rich, Camierre had drank away any wealth they had by the time Noreis was 10. To escape his debt-collectors, Camierre ran away with his son in the middle of the night with no supplies and no plan beyond “Leave Village.” They wandered through the wilderness for days before stumbling on Jamila and Perinon’s farm, where they stayed for several months. At the end, though, Camierre took the knife used to slaughter pigs and attempted to kill young Noreis in his sleep as revenge for his mother’s death. He only failed because Noreis’ scream woke Perinon, who then chased Camierre out of the house and later found the man dead in one of his fields.
11. Crime.  Has your character ever been arrested?  If so, what did they do?  Have they ever helped stop a crime?
Reis is anti-crime and has never done or thought of doing anything illegal. He would try to stop crimes if he saw them happening, though.
12. Secrets.  What is a secret that your character has?  Are they in line for the throne in a far off land?  Was there this one time at band camp…?  Are they secretly involved in an assassin’s guild?
Just his upbringing, which was abusive and awful. Only Asra knows, and even he doesn’t know everything.
13. Overcompensation.  Is there something that your character just HAS to do better than anyone else?  Or are they just that dang good without trying?  If they see someone else showing off, what is their kneejerk reaction?
Nope. Noreis would be happy to accept second place if someone was better at something than him. He loves learning, so any source of knowledge outside his own is great and worthy of celebrating, rather than tearing down.
14. Fight Club.  Is your character a good fighter?  What kind of skills do they have?
Nooooope. Post-plague, Noreis is very weak and fragile. He never fully regains his health, and he wasn’t overly healthy to begin with, thanks to a childhood of neglect and poverty. And combat magic never came easily to him so he can’t rely on that either.
15. The Arts.  Is your character a creative type?  What kinds of things can they create?  Can they act?  Street perform?
Not especially. He much prefers reading about things to doing them, and left-brain activities to right.
16. Goofy.  Is your character a clown?  Do they like to make people laugh?
Never on purpose. He’s too shy and reserved for that. Asra laughs at how cute he is, but otherwise he’s not naturally funny.
17. Language.  Is your character multilingual?  How many languages do they speak?  Do they have an accent?  Is it sexy?  Is it silly?  Do they have a multilingual lisp?
Only Vesuvian and Venterran.
18. Embarrassment.  What is something really embarrassing that your character has done/said?
Just little things, like tripping in the market with a full basket of eggs and making a huge mess, or accidentally giving Asra a large, bushy mustache when they were practicing transformational magic.
19. Memory.  Has your character gotten any of their memory back?  If so, what?  Did it change them?
Sort of. He remembers the broad strokes, but not very many specifics. Asra fills him in on a lot of things, so he sometimes suspects that what he remembers aren’t so much true memories as suggestions put there by Asra’s retelling. Not to say that Asra purposefully left things out, because he didn’t, but because Reis doesn’t remember details though they come up anyway, he just doesn’t trust them.
20. Family.  Talk about your character’s family.  Who were they?
The biggest thing all my OCs have in common is a shitty father. Not to #project or anything. Camierre was a shitty, shitty father. He often treated Noreis as his brother who died with their mother Rosamonde, when he remembered that his son existed at all. Noreis was finding his own food and clothing when he was very young, scavenging from the catches of other fishermen and using any fabric he could find to cover himself. He still prefers heavy, shapeless clothing, both for comfort, since he doesn’t have to bind under them, and a sense of camouflaged safety.

Fearful Symmetry - Watchmen blog
(SPOILER WARNING: The following is an in-depth critical analysis. if you haven’t read this comic yet, you may want to before reading this review)
Tumblr media
Do you know what’s my favourite thing about Watchmen? Even when offering damning criticism about superhero archetypes and America’s corruption, it never loses sight of the average joe. And that’s what Fearful Symmetry is all about.
Fearful Symmetry explores the fallout (get it?) after Doctor Manhattan has left Earth, exploring how regular American citizens react to the news that Russia has invaded Afghanistan and that the chances of total nuclear annihilation has increased exponentially. We see the news vendor and the comic reading kid again, which means we get more snippets from Tales Of The Black Freighter. I would love to know how Moore came up with the idea of having Black Freighter interspersed throughout the novel to provide poetic irony. I know some readers don’t really care for it, but I personally really like it. Not only does it give us some nice bit of info about this alternative America, it also highlights specific themes at play within a particular issue’s narrative (as well as foreshadowing what will happen in issues to come. Wink, wink).
In the Black Freighter storyline, the unnamed pirate captain has used the corpses of his crew to make a raft in the hopes of getting back home. We also see him eat some seagulls and kill a shark. Lovely. Now for those who have read the graphic novel and know what happens at the end, this serves as a really sneaky reference to what happens in the final issue, but we’ll talk about that when we come to it. For now lets concentrate on how it relates to this issue. America is in a state of paranoia and turmoil. Their superhuman nuclear deterrent is gone and Cold War tensions are increasing exponentially. It’s getting more and more likely that World War Three is going to happen. So what do people do? Some resort to their baser instincts, such as the man who kills his daughters because the youngest said “Wah,” which he mistook for ‘war’ during a moment of intense hysteria. Others, like Joey, are trying to make the best of it. Joey asks the news vendor to hang her poster promoting a benefit gig for ‘Gay Women Against Rape.’ The news vendor was first introduced to us as a brash and somewhat bigoted old fart, and though he does make a snide remark about Joey, he still hangs the poster up for her, presumably for the same reason he let the kid have the comic for free. Life’s too short. We also see the otherwise timid Dan make a move on Laurie, inviting her to stay at his house now that Manhattan is out of the picture. The point is, like the pirate captain, people’s morals and priorities are changing in response to a sense of impending doom. The pirate captain, a once respectable gentleman, has been reduced to using his dead crew as floats for his raft and snatching seagulls out of the air for food. In the interests of survival he’s changed to the point where he no longer recognises himself.

The attack of the sharks could also be symbolic of what happens with Adrian Veidt. An assassin tries to kill him, but is violently stopped before taking a cyanide capsule to avoid talking. There’s the obvious parallel you can make about how the assassin is the shark and Adrian is the prey, but considering what happens in the issues to come, it could also be seen as a subtle hint that this assassination isn’t quite how it first appears. The sharks were drawn to the captain’s raft because of the corpses. Is Adrian really just an innocent victim here? Could he have somehow done something to bring the assassin to him? Hmmmm....
Very quickly I just want to say that I love how the assassination is played out. Obviously there’s the composition where the beginning and the end of the issue match each other symmetrically throughout, culminating in this beautiful two page spread:
Tumblr media
But also I’m impressed with how Alan Moore is able to keep his cards close to his chest and not give the game away too soon. Yes this is a dramatic moment, but it doesn’t appear to be that significant on a first reading. When I first read it, I just assumed this assassination was a response to the growing hysteria surrounding the Cold War. I never thought it would come back to bite us on the arse in the last issue, but now I’m getting ahead of myself.
Another possible parallel could be with what happens to Rorschach. The two detectives from the first issue are given a tip regarding his location with the use of the code phrase ‘raw shark.’ Admittedly not very subtle, but the symbolism works regardless. Rorschach is the only one investigating this hypothetical ‘mask killer’ just as the pirate captain is the only one who can warn his family of the impending arrival of the Black Freighter, but their plans are scuppered thanks to the sharks.
Tumblr media
Ah yes, now lets talk about Rorschach because we get a lot of new information about him in this issue. A significant portion of Fearful Symmetry is told from his first person perspective, accompanied by another excerpt from his journal. What I find particularly interesting is how Rorschach views himself. Secret identities are a very common superhero trope, but Rorschach takes it a step further, claiming that his vigilante persona is his true self while his civilian getup is his ‘disguise.’ He even goes as far as to refer to the Rorschach mask as ‘his face.’ This links back to what I was saying about the first issue where I compared Rorschach to Moon Knight. He’s so psychotically obsessed with vengeance and his absolute morality that he has no other life outside of Rorschach. Everything he does feeds back into his primary mission. Punishing criminals in increasingly violent ways. It’s pretty disturbing and not something superhero stories tend to explore. Daredevil and Batman might come close, but they’re always viewed as being noble men doing what’s necessary to save their city. Rorschach, however, is far from noble. Remember, he flat out admitted in At Midnight, All The Agents that he has no interest in saving people. He just wants to hurt those he believes deserves to be hurt, often for relatively minor crimes. The ex-supervillain Moloch has his fingers broken and then gets shoved into the fridge just because he possesses illegal prescription drugs and an unlicensed firearm, which, yeah, is very naughty of him, but he’s not actually hurting anyone. Does he really deserve the same harsh punishment as an attempted rapist or a murderer? Does the attempted rapist or the murderer deserve such a harsh punishment, come to that?
As I said before, this is a sick power fantasy for him, which the end of Fearful Symmetry confirms conclusively when Rorschach is arrested. He wears elevated shoes to appear taller and puts on a rough voice to sound more intimidating than he actually does. It’s revealed that Rorschach is in fact the homeless man carrying the ‘The End Is Nigh’ sign we’ve seen throughout the novel.
Tumblr media
This was such a good twist. I honestly didn’t see it coming the first time I read it, and I love how Alan Moore throws you off the scent. Rorschach’s speech bubbles are wavy and he speaks in broken sentences without pronouns, whereas the homeless man has normal speech bubbles and speaks in fuller, more complete sentences. It’s great misdirection and the reveal is wonderfully executed. Plus it makes total sense. He’s the only background character to appear in major plot relevant scenes, which explains where Rorschach gets his information, and who’s going to suspect a homeless man of being a superhero?
There’s a lot more to discuss about Rorschach, but I’ll save that for the next issue, which explores his origins in great detail. For now, lets end by saying Fearful Symmetry is a gripping read that utilises its structure and narrative to great effect.

Do you have any hcs about Dom and Pyro's family backgrounds, how they got their powers, etc? Any shipping dynamic headcanons? No reason, I just figured you might and I'd like to hear them!
You have opened Pandora’s box, my friend, because I have so, so many head-canons.
I’m afraid this is basically all Pyro. He’s the character that I really obsess over in that ship.  Avalanche is cool, too, but I’m all about Pyro.  Maybe someday I’ll do Avalanche head-canons after I think more about his background.  But for now, I’m going to rant about Pyro in ridiculous detail.
Background:
Pyro’s Marvel bio only mentions an unnamed grandmother under relatives, so I head-canon that he was raised by his grandmother.  His parents were both teens that quickly abandoned him – his dad before he was born, and his mother a few months afterwards.  Adult St. John doesn’t really feel any resentment or angst about it. Since they abandoned him as a baby, he doesn’t take it personally – they just didn’t want to be parents, and he can understand that.  (He sure as fuck doesn’t want to raise any kids, either).  His grandmother was strict, and he got yelled at a lot, but it didn’t really cross the line into abusive.  Little St. John often felt like he was being punished for someone else’s crimes, but he also grew up feeling fairly secure that “Gran” loved him and would take care of him.  He was born in Sydney (according to his bio), but he grew up out in the countryside north of Sydney.  They were lower middle-class, sometimes dipping down into poverty if Gran didn’t get enough hours at her job, but not dirt-poor.
St. John wasn’t especially interested in fire until his powers began to develop in adolescence, then he couldn’t help but be drawn to it.  He could, on some level, “feel” it in a way he could never quite describe.  Gran banned candles from the house because St. John couldn’t resist reaching out to touch the flame, marveling at how he’d never get burned.  He eventually discovered that he could make fire actually DO things – leap off the wick and fly around, form into shapes.  Despite being a fairly outgoing, impulsive kid, he keeps this as a “fun” little secret. For a while he was convinced that he was a fairy changeling, and that Gran was secretly a witch, and he’d get pulled off on some kind of magical adventure.  Until he first saw a news report that used the word “mutant.”
I’d like to give St. John a good relationship with his grandmother into adulthood, but my mind automatically jumped to an angsty head-canon, and I had to run with that.  When St. John was about 16, their house was threatened by a massive wildfire.  They were late to evacuate, mostly because St. John had been off in the bush fucking around like a dumb teenage boy, wanting to get close to the fire.  When he gets back, Gran is frantically trying to drag him into the car, and he is arguing with her that they can stay.  He’s confident that he can use his powers to direct the fire around their house so they won’t lose everything, but only if he stays.  So he finally shows his grandmother his powers.  It’s the first time he’s told anyone.  His grandmother is already in full-blown panic mode, she’s been trying to track down her grandson all day, terrified that they are going to burn to death, and now suddenly he’s not her grandson anymore.  He’s a creature.  He’s one of those unnatural creatures that she heard about on the news, and she just can’t handle it.  So she does something that she later never forgives herself for.  She gets into the car and drives away, leaving St. John behind. After driving for about 30 minutes, she snaps out of it, and realizes what she is doing.  She tries to go back, but the roads are clogged with people evacuating, and the police aren’t letting anyone go towards the fire, even on foot.
Back at the house, St. John gathers a few sentimental possessions, and a few valuable items to sell (anything he can fit into a backpack), and then spitefully lets the house burn.  He tries to sit right in the middle of it while it goes up in flames (for maximum teenage drama), but realizes quickly that even if flames won’t hurt him, he can’t breathe smoke.  He also sends the fire towards neighboring houses, really enjoying how powerful he feels, and reveling in the destruction.  He doesn’t kill anyone, and he doesn’t want to (he’s not in that mindset yet), he’s confident that everyone has evacuated.  Eventually he sets a barn on fire, and hears the horses that were left behind screaming in terror.  That’s enough to snap him out of it, and he just wanders around for a while, stealing any cash or valuables he finds in abandoned houses until he makes his way to the coast.  Then he jumps on a cargo ship that needs extra deck hands, and works his way around Oceania, pretending to be older than he is, having adventures, and generally being an annoying little dumbass that the crew tolerates because he works hard and is brave in a pinch.  A few years later he comes back to Australia and is annoyed to discover that he’s been declared dead, and has to jump through a bunch of administrative hoops to be “alive” again.  He never seeks out his grandmother, nor has any desire to see or speak to her again. He can forgive his parents, but her abandonment really was a personal rejection of him, and it hurts deeply. It largely sets his views that humans are not to be trusted, and that they will turn on him in an instant if they find out what he is.  (Not that Gran is responsible for his many crimes later.  She’s not.  He makes his own choices.)
After getting a degree (his bio actually lists college level education), he starts working as a journalist and traveling around Oceania again, and banging out romance novels on the side. He uses his powers only in emergencies, generally to save his own skin, but occasionally to help others, if he thinks he can get away with it.  He probably starts a few fires as well, mostly by accident.  He tries not to be too obvious, but still winds up associated with enough strange fire-related phenomena that Mystique eventually tracks him down and makes him an offer.  He’s not really a “true believer” in mutant supremacy, but he thinks that humans will turn on mutantkind eventually, and he’d rather “get them” first.  Especially since it’s getting harder and harder to hide his powers.  Mostly, though, he’s in the Brotherhood for money and adventure, his two favorite things.
Sexuality: Because of the whole “Byrne imagined Pyro as gay” thing, I absolutely head-canon him as gay.  I don’t care if he sleeps with dozens of women and declares himself straight in Marauders, he’s gay as fuck.  He’s also deeply closeted – not in denial or self-loathing, just very private about it.  Since he appeared as an adult in the 80’s, I imagine he grew up in a time when “gay” wasn’t something that could ever be openly discussed (ignoring Marvel’s sliding time-scale here).  It would easily get him fired or ruin his career, and with the rough crowds he hung out with, it could even get him killed.  He tends to have anonymous one-night stands, or short affairs, old habit from when gay relationships could not be open.  He has no qualms about sleeping with married men, since back in the day there was no chance they’d ever leave their wives (and what she doesn’t know won’t hurt her, right?).  I’m afraid I’m making him sound like a negative gay stereotype here, but basically Pyro is a selfish jerk, and he’d have no qualms about sleeping with married women if he were straight or bi.  He does occasionally sleep with women, just to keep up an appearance of straightness, but he spends way more time flirting and then making excuses to not take them home.  He wound up channeling a lot of his feelings into his novels – giving the female main characters the kind of grandiose romances that he could never have.  He’d never admit to this, though, he’ll claim that he just writes trashy romance because it sells well and it’s easy.  Avalanche knows and completely accepts him, although they never discuss it openly. The rest of the Brotherhood/Freedom Force have a vague idea, no matter how much Pyro might try to perform heterosexuality.  It’s generally a “don’t ask, don’t tell” situation with them.  As long as he’s not open about it, they’ll pretend not to notice. (And as times change, I think most of them just don’t care).
With Avalanche – honestly, I can enjoy their relationship as platonic best buddies, or as a couple.  If they are buddies, I imagine Pyro kinda pines a bit for his straight friend who put him in the “mate zone,” but mostly just enjoys his company.  If they are a couple, then Avalanche is definitely bi (he has a wife in his bio), and was largely in denial about it until he got dragged out of the closet by his good-looking, chatty, obnoxious Australian team-mate.  Avalanche tends to be the quiet, reserved one, while Pyro drags him out to bars and keeps up this constant patter that just becomes pleasant background noise.  Dominic pretends that he finds it annoying, but he really likes the companionship, and having someone lavish so much attention on him.  (He misses it desperately after Pyro dies.)  Pyro is a huge flirt, and is also the one most likely to cheat.  But mostly, he just enjoys driving Dominic wild with jealousy, then taking him home for intense make-up sex.  After years of basically being the secret “fling on the side,” Pyro actually really enjoys Dominic being openly possessive of him.  Dominic probably didn’t realize he had feelings for St. John beyond “good buddy” until he was dying (or possibly until he was dead, if you want maximum angst.)
As a writer – St. John is a good writer, sometimes even a great writer.  He’s not a literary genius, but he doesn’t really want to be.  He just wants to have fun.  If the books sell, he’s reasonably happy, although he hates it when he feels like a book isn’t up to par.  Even writing trashy romance, he had to bend to publisher demands and couldn’t stray too far from the formulas designed to sell.  In a fit of frustration, he once wrote a parody of his own work, with all the insane plot twists that he was forbidden from publishing, and then posted it online as fan-fic under the pen-name “Firebrand.” It’s the most popular fan-fic in his small online fandom, but no one has figured out yet that he actually wrote it. He’ll always claim that he writes to make money, but he truly loves it, and can’t really stop.  He’s been writing stories since he was a child, an activity that Gran encouraged since it kept him quiet and out of trouble.  He enjoys reading other romance authors, but he absolutely despises Nicholas Sparks, because Sparks (in his mind) is a pretentious wanker who thinks he’s too good for the romance genre.
As a team-mate – Pyro is an absolute vicious, callous bastard if you face him in battle, and if you’re a bystander. He doesn’t hesitate to kill if that’s what the job calls for.  But if you’re on his team, then you’re his “mate” (unless you give him a reason to dislike you), and he’ll be friendly, banter, drink with you, watch your back in battle and expect you to watch his.  He has no problem working with the X-Men as a Marauder, because hey, they’re on the same team now!  They’re all in the same boat, both literally and figuratively, so it doesn’t matter that they fought each other in the past.  He may betray them at some point, or have his own agenda (I don’t know where the book is going with him), but in my head-canon, he’s just going with the flow. The X-Men are letting him basically be a pirate, so what the hell?  He generally doesn’t like to think too much about what he’s doing when he’s on a team, whether the Brotherhood or Freedom Force.  A job is a job, and he tries to turn his mind off about it.  He’s pretty comfortable just being hired muscle, and has no desire to lead or be in charge of anything.  He doesn’t mind following orders, as long as the leader treats him well enough. I’d like to imagine that all of the Marauders will eventually get tangled up in scheming and intrigue between the Hell-fire club factions – except Pyro, who has no idea what the fuck is going on, and no desire to know.
Marauders Pyro – I love him, he is a trashfire disaster.  I think he is being a bit wilder than he has been in the past because he isn’t really over dying and coming back to life.  He’s having, not a mid-life, but a post-death crisis.  I mean, he literally got a skull tattooed onto his face.  Which seems pretty significant when you think about how the Legacy Virus wore him down until he was basically looking at his own death every time he looked in the mirror.  (But he’ll say he just did it because it looks cool.)  I don’t think Pyro minds the idea of dying (he’s pretty upbeat about it in a Freedom Force mission when he thinks he and Mystique are about to get gunned down), but the Legacy Virus was hard on him, because it was so slow and inevitable.  It was slow and agonizing and (in his mind) undignified, and he was basically staring down the barrel of it for years while his strength slowly failed - no longer able to control his powers, no longer able to be of any use to his team-mates. He hated it.  He hated the idea of dying in a hospital bed.  He wanted to get his head shot off on a battlefield somewhere, not die in bed.  And now that he’s alive and healthy for the first time in years, he’s just reveling in it, and trying to live life the fullest.
Other random head-canons:
Pyro is terrible at video games. Terrible.  Again, because he showed up as an adult in the 80’s, I imagine him growing up without them, but even with the sliding time-scale I don’t think he really got into video games as a child.  He had a pretty low-tech house-hold with Gran.  He’ll play Smash Brothers with the other Marauders just to hang out, but he has no idea what he’s doing.  He just mashes buttons, and every now and then manages to knock someone off the stage with a lucky shot (which is infuriating to whoever gets knocked out).  He routinely forgets which character he is.  Once he “played” through a round with his controller unplugged and didn’t notice.  (Kitty won $50 off Bobby in that bet.)
Keeping with the low-tech theme, he tends to write by hand in spiral-bound notebooks, old habit left from his journalist days.  He’ll write an entire novel by hand, then edit as he types it up, a laborious process that often involves a lot of booze.
You can never offend Pyro with Australia jokes.  He knows all the Australia jokes, and he’ll make them before you do.  He sometimes uses obscure Australian slang to mess with people, and sometimes just completely makes shit up to see what he can get away with.
He doesn’t actually like Vegemite all that much, but it’s a very nostalgic taste and it’s hard to get outside of Australia, so sometimes he finds himself absolutely craving it. When Avalanche commented that Vegemite was disgusting, Pyro ate an entire jar with a spoon while staring him down the entire time.  He was starting to feel really sick by the end of that, but he had a point to prove, damn it.
Pyro is smarter than he often acts. This doesn’t stop him from being an impulsive dumbass.  He’s fairly literate, and can quote famous authors while also smashing an empty beer can against his forehead.  He likes to read when he’s got downtime and nothing else to do.  He’s especially fond of Jane Austen (because she’s witty) and Wuthering Heights, because it is a novel about horrible, dysfunctional people self-destructing and taking everyone else down with them, and he lives for that drama.
He secretly watches soap operas and dramas, they play up to his interest in romance.  His deep dark secret is being a major fan of the 1960’s supernatural soap opera Dark Shadows.  If ever caught watching it, he’ll flip it off and claim he was watching the most disgusting porn imaginable, because that is less embarrassing to him than watching Dark Shadows.
I think that’s it for now.  I have too many thoughts about Pyro.  Thank you for giving me a reason to write this all down.  Bless you if you’ve actually read this far.

Who the Heck is Eden?
Warning: The backstory contains parental death, child death, and gore.)
Disclaimer: For those who have seen my DBZ verse for my other RP blog, ambereyedcetra, you’ll notice they are the same. I started off with an AU for Eden’s original blog but it has developed to the point that I would be more comfortable giving this AU a blog of its own. I am the mun and creator of both blogs, no worries about character theft!
While the blog is currently focused on the DBZ verse, I am open to interacting with muses of other verses, especially fandom-less muses!
In verses that are not DBZ-related, Eden's backstory is very much the same. The only differences being that Shihab is a celestial realm instead of a planet, and it is an unnamed force that destroyed her world instead of Freeza.
This page is under construction, the story needs revamping. Forgive me for such a long wait for the change. I hope to get the backstory and information rewritten soon.
Name: Eden of the Draconids
Many of the characters in the Dragon Ball franchise have unusual names, often associated with food. However, since Eden was originally a Final Fantasy muse and her roots are based off Biblical stories, her name won’t be as humorous. Her father gave her the name Eden, in hopes she would be as beautiful and bountiful in blessings, but he had no intentions in her falling into sin like those within the Garden. Eden is to represent the Garden of Eden in that sense. As the story progresses, Eden gradually becomes corrupted with her inability to move past her loss and the frustration in her struggle with her heritage and identity, she betrays the planet, the stars, and what she holds dear, thus resulting in her losing that spiritual light.
Not only she represents the fall of Eden, but her story is to illustrate Judas Iscariot, the disciple who committed betrayal out of greed. Ultimately, her story is to reveal that even the most faithful can fall. However, her story is to also show the radical power of forgiveness, how it can revive the dead spirit.
Her last part of her name relates to her clan name. Clan names come from that of the meteor showers: Draconids, Perseids, Leonids, and Ursids. A kirinite’s membership of their clan can be determined by the color of their scales (described below). Their native planet, Shihab, bears an Arabic name, as a large part of Eden’s inspiration comes from the Middle East and Northern Africa and its meaning, “Shooting Star” refers to the Kirinites’ celestial nature.
Age: Mid to late 20’s during the Dragon Ball Z timeline, late 40’s during the Dragon Ball gt timeline.
Species: Kirinite (DBZ), Kirin (Other verses)
The kirinite name is based off a mythical creature with a similar appearance: the kirin. Many of their physical characteristics (description on this page) resemble the creature.
Kirinites are known for their agility, intelligence, and spiritual power. Much of their strength comes from their lower body, and are capable of cracking bone (of those who lack intensive training) with their rock-hard hooves.
Their senses are incredibly sharp, heightened by their connection to their planet. This is strongly linked to their ability to hear the voices of souls passed and can help them detect the aura of living creatures (unless those targeted are trained to hide their energy level). Though they lack the ability to fire ki directly from their bodies, they can harvest crystals from the earth and use their energy and rituals to inflict damage and potentially status-related problems (such as sleep, pacifying, or for those who master the skill, copying an enemy’s skill and create illusions).
Kirinites can also call upon an ability of the Celestial Beast. This creature is believed to be the totem of all born of Kirinite blood. This ability is similar to that of Yamcha’s Wolf Fang Fist, except the aura takes form of a large, maned antelope-like creature as the fighter charges. This empowers their melee strikes, as well as have a chance of burning the opponent with their energy. This power, however, is very risky as it drains much of the user’s energy reserves and can leave them vulnerable if they are not able to dispose of the foe before time runs out. Another limitation is the need to use crystals taken from Shihab’s meteorites to channel their energy and awaken their totem.
Kirinites feel connected to their planet and believe they can commune with the spirits. They place great reverence to the stars, viewing them as creators of their world and embodiments of all souls that were born upon it. With the use of crystals, Kirinites connect with the ghosts that whisper guidance to them and unlock their powers. The ancient belief was cast into doubt, however, as the Kirinites saw invading ships scream past the stars and collide into their home.
Description:
Kirinites have a humanoid appearance, with several physical traits resembling that of a sable antelope and gemsbok. All members possess cloven hooves for feet, often with feathering on the back of them, with the short bristly fur covering the tops of these hooves and melding into the skin at mid-calf.
Though members of the Draconid Clan bear long, ridged horns that gracefully sweep back from the head, Eden’s horns resemble antlers, a trait inherited from her mother’s clan: the Persids. All Kirinites possess large deer-like ears; claws; heavy, thick, fang-like teeth with large prominent canines (elder, higher-ranked Kirinites will have even larger canines that slide over the lip); long lion-like tails; mohawk-like hairstyles (mohawks are usually more prominent on males); and small, light-colored speckles scattered over their skin and scales.
Kirinites also have scales present on the fronts of their hooves and lower leg, hips, base of their tail, the tops of their hands and up their forearms, and up their back. The scales on their backs are thickened and raised like a crocodile’s spines; these are believed to help protect their spines during hunts and battles. These scales are often dark in color, yet have small glistening speckles, similar to stars.
With Eden’s Draconid Clan, the scales are similar to those of the sunset (coming from the preferred time to view the Draconid meteor shower). Her scales are a gradient of a dark, muted reddish-purple fading into rosy gold at the bottom of the scales, with the silvery speckles being most prominent in the darkest colors. Her scales are in the common places, listed above.
Eden stands at about 5’ 3’’ and has a lean, toned figure. Her skin is a very dark tan, and has a subtle rosy tint to it. Silvery cream speckles are visible all over her skin, with them being most prominent on her shoulders, upper arms, shoulder blades, thighs, and down her sides and hips along the dorsal scales, and down her tail.
She also has various scars from her hunts and battles. While shallow cuts litter her entire body, there are three distinct scars: Three claw marks are seen on her left collarbone; four huge, jagged scars rip over her left rib cage, reach down her side, and end just above her left hip bone; and a messy web of gashes, bite marks, and dimples where flesh and scale had been torn off is seen on her right forearm.
I based her appearance loosely on the Egyptian and Middle Eastern backgrounds. She bears the purplish-black tattoos around her eyes and on her cheeks that are iconic of Egyptian relics, and wore three piercings on both ears (a golden ring, silver stud, and silver ring), the ivory fang gauge once seen only on her left ear. Two thin, silver lip rings were on her bottom lip. Her piercings are forcibly removed during her drafting into Frieza’s army, leaving two rips on her bottom lip and her ears tattered.
There is also a tattoo on her left wrist, a small symbol of the silver sun with two black-tipped feathers. It’s to honor her late mother.
Her long, straight, thick hair reaches down to her hip. It’s a very dark brown, with some streaks in her bangs and on the ends of her hair fading to a dusky purple-brown color.  Four thin braids also adorn her mane, each braid held together by a tarnished gold band.
The fur covering her ankles, ears, and tail are a dark rosy-brown; purpleish-black markings rim the edges of her ears and around the hooves. Like all Kirinites, Eden also has horizonal, rectangular pupils; her irises are still a deep amber.
During the DB gt timeline, Eden’s seemingly endless wandering and fighting against her heritage and spiritual connection has impacted her. Her ribs become visible due to restricted access to food, and dark circles and bags can be seen beneath her eyes from lack of sleep. Though Kirinites has long lifespans and youthfulness, she appears older and more tired due to her difficult lifestyle. More scars are also visible on her body.
During Eden’s time in the Planet Trade Organization and her intergalactic escapades, she wears black and champagne gold armor, baggy black pants, and a marroon belt as seen below.
Tumblr media
On Earth, however, she can be seen wearing midriff shirts to show off her midsection (Kirinites view scars as a sign of beauty, as they prove one is capable to guarding their clan and their mate and children). The tops are usually dark colors. Her favorites being a dark gray midriff shirt with a knotted hem and a wide collar to show off her shoulder (and thus the scar on her collar bone), and a charcoal heather top with a smilodon skull graphic. She also wears acid washed jeans, or ripped denim capris. She also develops a fondness for hemp chokers and tribal-inspired jewelry. Her usual attire for life on Earth can be seen below:
Tumblr media
( Full size images and detailed reference sheet can be found [HERE] !! )
She is always wearing a crystal of pale gray and pale gold  around her neck. This crystal comes from Shihab and is what she uses to channel her ki for attacks and summon the Celestial Beast totem.
Abilities:
Eden is no exception and possess the standard kirinite abilities as described above, along with being able to let out a thundering bestial roar (sounds like an angry mix between a red deer stag’s and a lion’s) that can echo for miles. However, the blessing of hearing ghosts becomes a curse the day she forsakes her faith in them. If she were to return to Shihab, they would become distorted, distressing wails. Though she may be a great distance away from them, they still tug deep in her mind like a silent, persistent haunting.
When she lands on other planets, this ability becomes even more unnerving as she cannot understand the souls tangled whispers. This only strengthens her fear and hatred towards hearing them, and is further convinced that the stars of her home have cursed her. She is at risk of losing focus, becoming entranced, or reacting wildly midst the most severe hallucination phase. All these can make battle extremely dangerous for the lost Kirinite.
Though during times where her vigilance becomes exhausted, she does let the voices stream through her for a time. Her corrupted view and dark intentions for the use of her people’s powers will occasionally make the scramble of strange tongues make sense. Like a devil whispering temptation to heartbroken ears, the words take form of spells, of rituals beyond her former knowledge. To seek and perform these rituals were strictly forbidden in Kirinite law, but with these discoveries, the last Kirinite decides to abolish the law and commit these rare incantations to memory.
Over time she practices the dark arts, and more and more she seeks to uncover the greatest ritual that dark words promise will endow her with the power to rain flaming justice upon all who wronged her. She still searches for the ultimate crystal, said to be buried within a planet, beneath the graves of countless sacred souls, conflicted with the desire to finally seize that power and her need to discover the truth about the stars and her people. The most common of these is her ability to conjure sleeping crystals, meant to lull the threat or target to a deep sleep, allowing her to escape or steal from them. Due to her corruption, however, they are filled with negative energy and can inflict pain, or blinding fury, on anyone within its proximity (including herself), rather than just the opponent.
My aim for Eden is for her to learn and grow stronger gradually through training. She will likely lose in battles, especially against powerful opponents, though this is dependent on the verse, where our muses are in their interactions, and what my RP partner is comfortable with. The fun in Dragon Ball Z is watching a character work hard with others to overcome challenges, not winning everything effortlessly.
Personality:
Eden can be cunning, and she relies on this trait when facing a troubling situation; often choosing to stick to the shadows and tricks rather than facing someone head-on. Eden can’t stand the thought of losing control and is known to fight viciously and dirty when cornered. Preferring to be quiet and simply observe, she struggles with social interactions, especially first time meetings. She is paranoid towards others, thus she doesn’t trust easily. The woman is also victim to envy, as she can become very jealous towards those who are more skilled or more blessed than she is. She broods quietly instead of talking about her problems; and can seem dishonest, selfish, and stubborn.
However, towards those who grow close to her heart, she becomes protective and does her best to be dependable. The Kirinitw becomes more playful to those she loves, often sneaking up and catching them by surprise (mostly by pouncing on them). She’ll even goes as far as become touchy-feely with them. She is rather insecure, due to her fear of the ancestral stars and belief that she is cursed, and often looks towards intimacy as a means to help combat with her insecurities.
Parents:
Her father’s name is Cassiel, which is the name of the archangel of tears and solitude in the Kabbalah. He is considered withdrawn, quiet, and has a cynical view towards most things. He questions and fears of what the voices will do to him. Because of his fear, He tries not to get involved with the stars’ and Planet’s troubles, despite their urgings for him to act. He was a hunter for the Draconid clan.
Her mother’s name is Nizhoni, which I found means “Beautiful” in Navajo. She was a merchant for her natal Persid clan before her marriage to Cassiel. She’s always been headstrong and takes pride in being seen as “a rebel for the right reasons”. Nizhoni is very set in her ways, and is always determined to act for the greater good. This is where her and Cassiel get into arguments, particularly when tensions on Shihab begin to mount. The clans began fighting for the sacred lands, with the Draconids and Persids allying with one another, and Leonids and Ursids joining on the opposing end. Nizhoni spends much of her time travelling between clan territories to give supplies to her natal clan as they are on the front lines. Though this wears on her, especially when she is pregnant, she remains determined to do all she can to save both her natal clan’s and her current clan’s livelihoods.
The extent of her exhaustion became starkly apparent as she struggles to give birth to Eden. Cassiel’s dying faith in the spirits finally came to an end when Nizhoni passes away after delivery. He believes the spirits of the stars and planet truly betrayed him, and thus sows the seeds of hatred towards them. He is a distant and gruff father, spending his waking hours away hunting to meet his daughter’s needs, only to check in when necessary. He begins training her to become a hunter as soon as she was able to hold a dagger.
Though Eden admires her father’s resilience, she quickly learns not to ask about her mother and the spirits’ words as it often brings about buried anguish. As she grows, Cassiel’s inner resistance to the spirits’ influence begins to wear on his mind. The once powerful man she knew slowly deteriorated to a feeble lost soul, becoming disconnected with reality and unable to carry about his duties.
Now a young adult, Eden patrols the clan’s hunting grounds and boundaries to support Cassiel and herself. She starts questioning her own faith as she watches how the spirits are affecting her father. Distortion ripples through once familiar voices, she and the others start to grow restless. There is a persistent, eerie feeling in the air, like the calm before a violent storm.
It was that night, as metal and murderous intent fell from the skies instead of rock and fire, that the spirits, stars, and earth fell silent.
The invaders of different shapes and sizes claimed the planet in the name of Frieza and began slaughtering most of the inhabitants. The terrified Draconids came to the conclusion that the stars have betrayed them, and they could no longer trust the spirits’ words. The last survivors plotted their escape, with Eden and the ailing Cassiel being among them. They attempted an ambush to steal the invaders’ space pods, only to be caught and murdered.
Being only a lowly hunter and guard, Eden swallowed her pride and submitted. She spoke velvet words, despite her trembling voice, playing up her strength and skills honed by years of surviving within the badlands and fighting the monstrous beasts of the land.  It was by the sheer grace of whatever deity was left to care that they conceded to let her live, only on the condition that she devotes her life to servitude.
The worst was yet to come, as training within the Planet Trade Organization held no mercy for a mere foot soldier. Though bones were broken and tears spilled, the Kirinite held onto her lust for vengeance. She vowed to tear the entrails of these monsters and their tyrannical ruler, just as they have done to her people, to her family. She vowed to show the celestial guardians, who left her kind to die, that she would overcome their betrayal and inflict the same suffering upon them. So she waited, she watched, learning who were integral to this force, and their weaknesses…
(Thank you @crownprincefreeza for letting your muses become part of mine’s story!!)
Her already turbulent life in Frieza’s forces took a turn for the worse after a failed conquest over a targeted planet. The soldiers stood at attention fearful and frozen before the enraged prince, dreading for what was to come. Eden was no exception, drowning in the quiet, yet surging rise of death’s cold approach. Yet to endure abuse, from the very creature that brought destruction upon everything she had known and loved, to be beneath the heel of her enemy fueled a storm of fiery rage. In her foolishness she bit down at Freeza’s pointed finger, earning her a scream and a brutal swat of his tail.
Once sliding across the floor from his strike, Eden laid paralyzed, waiting for the painful judgment to come upon her. Malevolent ideas on what to do weaved and clashed in the imperial mutant’s mind, and to Eden’s surprise, he offers her an opportunity to receive redemption. Desperate to remain alive, Eden accepts, not knowing the price of her pardon would cost until moments later.
Amazingly, few of her people, members of her late mother’s clan, hid well enough to survive the onslaught. As images of once proud warriors digging through the garbage of the planet’s new occupants and the deadly clashes between them flash by, Frieza gave her the choice: Lure out the last of the Kirinites and pay her transgression with their blood or die. The torn woman wrestled within herself. Would she dare betray her allies, her own kin, just so she might live another day? Morals and instinct warred within her, and ultimately through her tears, her yearning to survive, just long enough to make Frieza and all the spirits suffer for their crimes, overcame the more noble of choices. She accepts, and with the towering equine soldier, Yuut, being commanded to follow her, Eden returns onto once familiar soil, the soil that no longer bore the warmth nor recognizable voices.
With her armor cast aside, sand scratching and clinging onto hands and skin, and letting Yuut break one of her precious antlers, Eden approached the last of the Persids. Eden spoke of escaping the invaders’ prison and stole a space craft that could save them all. Her pleas for them to join her were eventually believed, and they followed Eden away from the last of their strongholds, only for their blood to stain the hooves and shadows of both soldiers.
Once conquered, Eden stared at the eyes of dead kin. Wide with fear, with otherworldly agony of being betrayed, becoming like dead ice, devoid of any life. The spirits no longer held comfort to her, and with a sudden, brutal crash of her head against the rocks stained by unrelenting violence; her last antler fell, broken dark shards among limp bodies, before turning away with Yuut.

Okiko the Fairy Pred
Basic Concept: A tiny insect alien fairy girl with the ability to gulp down anything she can kiss; the ultimate tiny pred girl!
Species: Unnamed insect-like fairy species from an isolated world that has been retroactively called Igbolan; these apex predators are survivors of an ancient cataclysm that reduced their civilization to pre-Stone Age status, but they have rebuilt over the ages and had achieved a technology state on par with the Industrial age, with basic electronics, prior to her leaving the planet.
Height: Approximately six inches tall.
Appearance: Imagine a fairy, the classic image. A tiny humanoid, likely super cute, with a pretty little dress and glittery wings. Now, imagine that… and forget pretty much all of it except the most basic image because she is actually an insect-like being with no apparent connection to the Fae.
She fits the look, admittedly. Her thick and super short stacked body is covered in black chitin that glistens in various colors against the light, with bipedal legs able to support her body and resemble the legs of a grasshopper, but adjusted for biped stance. She is extremely thick, several times wider than she is tall, almost a foot and a half across with sheer curve volume, with massive breasts massing nearly as much as her entire body (and producing a sweet sugary substance), and a equally massive butt. She has a belly big and plump enough that it stretches past her chitin, a lighter color than the rest of her.
Her face is cute, with multiple eyes, and extremely large, luscious lips that dominate her face and make up the bulk of her sensory organs. Do not let her kiss you. It’s a bad idea. While she has no hair, a cluster of antenna around a primary pair gives something like hair.
She has not just one pair of wings, but dozens, perhaps over a hundred or something in between there; they grow in many rows from the back of her head all the way down to her chins, each set larger than her and beating furiously with a helicopter effect. These wings are beautiful and glittering, shining gorgeously, and resemble stained glass. They also give her an impressive turn of speed.
She’s become something of a fashionista and likes to wear random objects as clothing; scraps of flat as a sash, bottle caps for boob covers, or ‘clothing’ herself in stolen jewelry. Her chitin is no less decorated, painted in vibrant and beautiful patterns that might make a biologist reminded of venomous animals that have bright colors to warn predators of the danger.
Backstory: Originally from a very obscure world forgotten by surrounding systems, her people lived in peace and tranquility as they recovered, tending to their jungle and delicately maintaining it, harvesting it and feasting upon every single thing that lived in it the instant they felt even slightly peckish. These fairies possess the unusual power of swallowing whole anything they can press their mouths to, instantly gulping it down into their infinitely expanding bellies. A natural glutton, Ikiko was content with this to the day she saw the sky come down.
A ship crashed, carrying a traveler from across the stars who rampaged through the jungle in a hissy fit, only stopped with Ikiko swallowed her whole in self defense. This invader, Yatruiga, was brought back to her village and in her recovery over the years, told the people there about how things had changed in the multiverse over the ages. Ikiko was entranced, eager to see the galaxy, and incidentally wanted to sample all the delicious two-leggers walking about up there!
Since then she’s become Yatruiga’s best friend and rival, acting as something of a calming influence on the cantankerous warmonger.
Personality: Take a magpie, make it sapient, and set it loose on a multiverse where everything is VERY INTERESTING and new; you have the basis of Ikiko! She’s a deeply inquisitive, massively curious and impulsive gal, with all the self control of a crow that’s been tossed into a shiny thing factory.
She’s even prone to stealing random things, on the basis of ‘i want it, therefore it is mine’, and places where she goes tends to have random things vanish, and show up again on her person or in her various hidey holes.
She’s not a bad person, nor is she cruel. Her recklessness means that she really doesn’t think things through, which is ironic considering that she is the calming voice of moderation between her and Yatruiga. The distinction between them is that Ikiko rushes into things after she takes time to consider them, and while she is bad at consequences, she simply doesn’t have a ‘stop now maybe’ button.
One of her faults is that she’s still hazy on the distinction between ‘animal’ and ‘being’. She will happily gobble up humans, orcs and anything else in a single swallow as she would a rampaging monster or livestock, without any second thoughts or hesitation. Her people were the only sapients on her homeworld, and their outlook on the world has lead her to view other beings as ‘animals that can talk’; people, yes, but not fundamentally different. She eats animals, so why not the ones who talk?
A glutton and gourmand, she regards her travels across the multiverse as an excuse to snack on everything, and she intends to sample at least one of every being in the cosmos, and this suggests a more hedonistic aspect of her personality in general. She wants to enjoy life, and doesn’t care much about success or personal ambition. She even has rather cynical outlooks on ambition as a concept, deeming it a zero sum game that’s just wasting time when you could be having fun.
She is also very practical and pragmatic, with no real room for sentimentality. When she sees a jungle burning down, she thinks of the ecological devastation and problems this will pose for the inhabitants, but she won’t cry for the despoling of nature, because she wouldn’t understand or care about what that even means. This somewhat grim outlook explains a lot of how she thinks.
However you may not realize this at first glance. She is very bubbly, excitable and friendly, with a somewhat airheaded way of talking (“OH MAH GOSH YOU GUYS! CHECK THIS THING I FOUND OUT! ISN’T THIS SHINY JUST THE SPARKLIEST!?”) all full of exclaimations, run-on sentences and overflowing excitement at everything, forever. Her default mood is just immense pep!
Fandom: Original character! Her influence maps to general notions of fairies as ‘not nice, but not malicious’ archetypes, and she is heavily inspired by the original incarnation of Tinkerbell from the first Peter Pan novel.
Abilities: As a fairy, she can fly extremely fast and far, so much that she moves around like a rocket, and is ludicrously hard to pin down. She is also much stronger than her size indicates; she is weaker than a human or even a goblin would be, but she can pick up and carry large objects without much problem, and her strength increases for a short time whenever she eats, getting stronger the more she has eaten.
She’s very durable as well, about equivalent to her strength. You couldn’t stomp her, but you might be able to crush her, but that’s still a very bad idea.
For all fairies like her have the ability to swallow whole anything their lips touch, instantly sucking down the entire prey. Size doesn't matter; she has eaten things as big as humans, cars, small buildings, elephants, kaiju, giant robots and even bigger, without any problem. Her stomach will expand to fit anything she swallows. In theory she could gobble up a city, if only she thought to try it, and anything in her stomach will be digested, with the exception of tough metals and minerals. Gems would be in no fear of her, for example, and Transformers would probably find this a mild inconvenience, but to organics, it is certain doom. Digestion will happen almost instantly, and she experiences digestion as another part of the tasting process.
She will devour anyone, anything, any time, and with the emotional awareness of a flytrap grabbing its latest victim. At this point it's an automatic reflex.
While she has yet to acquire a multiverse standard education, she is learning fast, and may even be gaining the knowledge of those she consumes, or at least believes she is. In any case she has amassed a respectable amount of technical knowledge and is doing her best to learn more. However she thinks she is a lot more skilled or knowledgeable than she actually is.
Relationships: She has a wide variety of friendships and makes friends easily. She might tend to instantly gobble them up the instant she decides they look tasty, or to examine them more intimately, but she genuinely likes people… and not just in the ‘you’re delicious’ sense. Accordingly, she will quickly befriend people with ease.
She gets along well with the MILF Fleet, finding kindred spirits with them. She really doesn’t get their concerns with morality, and can find them self-righteous to her pragmatic views. Still, they’re nice ladies… but she’s worried about eating them. They seem like they might bite back.
She would probably join the Cobalts if she wasn’t already tied up with Yatruiga, relishing their carefree attitudes towards life and indifference to collateral damage. As it is, she has accepted a freelancer status with them, doing small missions on their behalf in exchange for some loot and prestige in their ranks.
Yatruiga is her closest friend and rival, the two of them constantly competing to outdo one another and denying that they really like one another. Yet at the end of the day, Ikiko knows that she is Yatruiga’s only real friend, and sticks to her in order to take care of the big goohead. Additionally, Yatruiga is very powerful and can protect Ikiko, so there is an element of self-defense involved. The two of them are growing inseparable, even just in a ‘those two people in the background making funny comments’ way.
Pred Level: Extremely high. She will eat anyone and anything, and she will eat them at any time without a second thought or awareness of timing. She’s not a random eater, and regards it as fine dining; she likes exotic, interesting meals, not random fare she could anywhere! She loves fighting monsters for this reason, since they are all unique and totally interesting wonders. Horrible murderous brutes and abominations, but tasty ones. Note that her rating is partly due for how easy it is for her to eat someone; all she has to do is lock her lips around them, suck, and they area inside her stomach and already digesting. Due to her extreme speed, agility and small size, this makes her terrifyingly effective at devouring, though once she eats enough, she is effectively immobilized and can no longer consume unless they are foolish enough to touch her lips.
Prey Level: Fairly low. Her sheer voracity and the ease she can consume others makes actually consuming her extremely hard and pointless. To be in a position where you can swallow her, you have to be close enough for her to swallow you, and she’ll have an easier time of it. She can be eaten and has no special options, but it is very hard to see how it could happen.
Relevant Kink Material: Extreme size difference (she’s the tiny), shortstack, hyper proportions, vore (soft vore, predator), xeno monster girls.

I made a fan character for BNHA xP
Name: Aoki Koto (あおきこと) Hero name: Elektra Age: 15 Birthday: December 20 Gender: female Height: 166 cm (5’5”) Hair color: ginger Eye color: blue and gold Blood type: O
Quirk: alternate form (wolf type)
Abilities: This quirk allows her to switch from two forms. If she remains in animal form for too long, her vision blurs and she becomes confused. It can take over an hour to recover which is why she is careful not to overdo it. Thanks to U.A.’s hero training, she is now able to use it for an hour at a time.
Personality: Koto is of reserved nature but maintains a friendly demeanor. She has a general distaste for overly outgoing or boisterous people... save for Denki, who she finds entertaining. If she finds it necessary, Koto will raise her voice. She is rather blunt with what she says and can end up sounding rude without intending it. It can lead her to get annoyed when the person says she was being impolite.
Stats: Power: 2/5 D Speed: 5/5 A Technique: 3/5 C Intelligence: 4/5 B Cooperativeness: 4/5 B
Background: Koto was born from an experimental quirk marriage between a wolf with a human quirk and a human with shape-shifting abilities. Because they were unable to care for her afterwards, she was taken in by another family but after an incident between her and her parents, she was transferred to her 3rd and final home at age 7. Because of the unnamed incident, she drifted away from most of her tendencies that came with her wolf’s blood. The girl became known as the wolf that never howled, making her peers in junior high think she strange, since other users of her type did. Many of the kids avoided her because her quirk’s lineage did not have the best reputation. She went on desiring to become a hero to prove that not all wolves should be deemed dangerous. At the time, she could hold her disguise for only 30 minutes at a time before getting disoriented, and so she took classes in martial arts to make up for what she lacked. When the day came, she managed to pass the entrance exams and was admitted to U.A.
Koto is now a student in class 1-A.
School and performance info: •She is student no. 21 •She ranked behind Ochako and ahead of Koji in Aizawa’s Quirk Apprehension Test. •After Shoto and Hanta’s battle, she faced off against Fumikage in the Sports Festival but lost. •She ranked behind Tsuyu and ahead of Kyoka in the U.A. midterms. •Out of all the students of the class, she gets along with Kyoka the best. •Her hero name “Elektra” holds no relevance to her actual quirk. Instead, it was suggested by Denki when she could not think of a non-cheesy title. Because there was nothing else at the moment, she choose to work under that name. •She is more of a planner and doesn’t like taking action unless needed. Though she doesn’t have much power, she is a good studier and knows her material. •At first, she wanted to be a hero but she sometimes thinks she would fit better as a pro hero’s sidekick •She is extremely fast and reactive and has a weakness to strength quirks
Trivia: •Koto possess heterochromia as a human and as a wolf •Her favorite food is sashimi •Her favorite kind of music is EDM •She ate cow tongue as a dare from Denki but found it delicious •If she had seen it, her favorite Disney song would be “Do You Want To Build A Snowman?” •Shoto thinks he has seen her before they both went to U.A. but was unable to recall anything until she stood as a wolf. Initially she didn’t interact with him much but refused to be intimidated by him. •Her voice is very mellow and slightly rough sounding •Ochaco noticed her lack of howling and questions why, but she has yet to directly ask her about it

BGE2 Development:
6/12/17 E3 2017 Trailer Breakdown:
Chris: Now, I know I'm not the only one who looked at this and heard:
[Zhou Yuzhu: "Peyjin."]
Chris: What he said just there, and thought of our beloved Uncle Pey'j from BGE.
Michel: Right! There is a direct connection, you know, so he's very clearly saying "Peyjin" which is kind of a divinity for this kind of hybrid. It's a way to add depth and to show how deep the world can be. And even though those hybrids are created by humans, they have their own religion. Because BGE2 is a prequel to BGE1, we want to add a lot of details about how the world is, those names, "Pey'j"... is it a common name, a divinity name, so... Sometimes you know, in some religions, you give the name of a divinity to a boy or a girl... So all these details are here to make people understand more about the world of BGE.
2/28/18 Instagram: Michel Ancel posts a picture of a bust that looks suspiciously a lot like Pey’j.
6/8/18 Instagram: Ancel teases artwork from E3 2018. “A good friend of mine is back in Beyond Good and Evil 2 . Get prepared for more surprises during the 2018 UbiSoft E3 conference !!!”
6/11/18 E3 2018: Pey’j is shown in the trailer. “And Pey'j is back as the the incorrigible Chief Cook of the Gada.”
6/11/18 E3 2018 Trailer Breakdown (video):
I think last year people sort of thought when they saw Zhou Yuzhu, the big hybrid from the criminal underworld, that perhaps that was Pey'j. So it's pretty cool this year that it actually is Pey'j. We were super excited about being able to reveal the fact that he's going to be in BGE2.
...
Pey'j, as you can see in this image, is carrying Knox, who was wounded. You can see how close these guys are. They've probably been flying in space for a very long time in this crew and they know each other very well and they're always helping each other.
6/11/18 Instagram: Ancel says that even though Jade has forgotten her past, Pey’j remembers.

9/28/2019 Inside Look of Beyond Good and Evil 2 with Ubisoft Montpellier - 2019 ZBRush Summit:
"So let's start with Pey'j. Pey'j is probably one of the most iconic characters in BGE. Originally, he is the best friend of Jade, who is the main character of this game, so you can imagine the importance of him. Our goal was to bring a new vision of him without destroying the old one. So how did we do that? First step: we start with some 2D artwork, just to figure out which emotion we want to give him, what narrative part that he will have, and at this stage, everything is possible. The only question which is important is "what makes Pey'j's identity?
Secondly, Pey'j has got a very long history. And I don't know if you've noticed, but in the original BGE which was more cartoony, Pey'j was based on a really round, primitave shape. And, well, it makes him much more easy to recognize. So while we decide to keep this philosophy, but we decide to pass from a round shape to a more hexagonal shape just to bring a more mature and tough feeling. So that's why I use a weight on the screen as a symbol of what emotion we want to give to Pey'j. This shape process I think is a very simple way to communicate with the character artist. That's all the process is based on. Collaboration between the concept artist and the character artist, we need those kinds of tools to speak together."
...
“We start with the most complicated part of this character, it's the head. So Sebastien gives me concept art of his head and asked: "try to match it". Okay, so I have made a rough, and as you can see, ugly model of Pey'j after some couple of hours. And then, Sebastien provided me with comprehensive feedback of the character he wants. At the beginning of the process, all the feedback is "macro feedback". And I make my ping-pong with him, and after that other feedback, going more in detail in the character. And that was done."
Pey’j in BGE1
Media
Profile (official website):
Age: 50
Occupation: Handyman
Personality: Grumpy, yet attentive and endearing, Pey’j is a fighter who’s seen and done it all. He’s often seen hanging out in the Akuda Bar with a stiff drink and a cigar, telling jokes and old stories of his life experiences.
Special Skills: A mechanical and electronic genius, Pey’j is renowned for his skills as a handyman and his ability to fix anything he gets his hands on. He keeps Jade’s equipment up and running, and is constantly inventing new gadgets and machines for Jade Reporting - or just for the fun of it...
Background: Pey’j is a hybrid being - half-man and half-hog. He’s Jade’s adoptive uncle and has brought her up since she was a child. Despite his reservations and fears, he’s been a great influence and tutor for Jade, and still tries to protect her and help her out with her missions whenever he can.
Current Residence: Pey’j lives on the small island in Hyllis with Jade in a cozy lighthouse that he built from scratch many years ago.
Vehicle: Pey’j doesn’t like to drive – Jade’s usually behind the wheel. He does take care of all the vehicles mechanically, though, and he has a special place in his heart for his famed Beluga Spaceship.
Prized Possession: His Jet Boots – a one-of-a-kind invention that allows Pey’j to blast himself or other objects high into the air.
What He’s Doing Now: Pey’j spends a lot of time with Jade - in fact, you will usually find him right by her side on her reporting missions. Otherwise, Pey’j spends most of his time in his workshop, although no one is really sure what he does down there!
Official Guide (Bradygames):
Characters: Meet Jade’s adoptive uncle and cantankerous right-hand pig. Pey’j is a mechanic and inventor-- indeed, a couple of his inventions play a large role in this adventure. Use his Super Action Jet Boots stomp to bounce certain opponents into the air so Jade can bat them into distant targets. His dogged (or perhaps we should say pigged) loyalty keeps him at Jade’s side despite his reservations about the evolving adventure.
Live Chat Interview with Michel Ancel 10/21/2003:
Question 6: (BircGuest-24085213): Hello - How much of a part will Jade's friend 'Pey’J' play in the game?
(Michel): Pey’J is very important in the story and for the gameplay. You'll spend about one third of the game with him but , for the other part, he will still have a very important role (but I can t say too much.... )
...
Question 12: (dreamdancer5): why is Pey’J styled like a pig? and not like a man or anything else?
(Michel): please, instead of snipe, read style in the "having their own...." sentence....I m sooooo tired.....need some holidays :).... (Michel): I like the spirit of self derision. Pey’J is very important; he's got a strong personality but looks like a beast. I believe that most of us have more inside that outside our appearance. If you finish the game, you’ll see what I mean.
Early Storyboard: (unused and revised in final game)
Age: 56
Race: Hybrid clone          Sn-b5234
Name: Pey’j
In-game Dialogue & Cutscenes (SPOILERS)
“For Jade” Mdisk:
Jade, You inherited generosity and courage from your parents. You know, I think about them a lot. We were very close friends.
Twenty years ago we were forced to separate because we were all having some major problems with the authorities. Your parents put you under my care… to save your life…
We came to Hillys. Back then, it was a peaceful planet. I had hoped to raise you there safely. But the conflict spread. Now, you must know something… if I was able to get here, it was thanks to the "Beluga”, the spaceship that I designed and built with your father.
It still exists. But I haven’t exactly finished getting it back in top shape. You’ll find the check-up report on my desk.
The “Beluga” is at our place. You have to enter a code into each one of the consoles to open the secret hiding place. I can’t say any more on this Mdisk about it, but I hope this information will be useful to you, if, one day, you have to use the “Beluga”.
No matter what happens, good luck, Jade…
Uncle Pey'j
DomZ Priest (cutscene):
DOMZ PRIEST: Shauuuuuuuuniiiiii. You have finally come back to me… You have served your master well, Shauni. You alone have brought the Hillyans to me. They have followed you blindly.
HH: Miss Jade ?!
DOMZ PRIEST: DorthKaul  Pahkahn! You are not who you think you are. The pig has hidden your origins from you…
PEY'J: Jade!  NO!!  Don’t listen to him! Hhh!… Aaaarrh!…
DOMZ PRIEST: You are the source of my powers the instrument of my strength. They took you away in the hope of destroying me. But I have survived, feeding me with only the most miserable of sacrifices. They made you human. But you are not like them. You are mine, Shauni, and I am going to kill the human part of you.
HH: Jade!!
DOMZ PRIEST: Shauni DomZ ThindraaaHHH!!
