A Complex Mobility Task: 📫🦮
Since moving into a house, Mandana has started to develop a habit of barking loudly when mail or packages are dropped off. Rather than punish her for this natural behavior I’m giving her the tools to deal with it in a more productive manner.
1. She rings the bell to let me know the mail was delivered.
2. She sits and waits for me to open the door and give her commands instead of bolting outside.
3. She brings the packages inside and stacks them in a pile.
4. She opens the packages for me only when I ask and only until I ask her to stop so as not to damage anything.
5. She helps me pick up items and throw trash away.
It’s a bit of extra work for me right now but she really enjoys it and it’s going to be very helpful when the training is complete.

Izzy *needed* to finally hear that Blackbeard said he was amazing
When was the last time you think Ed told Izzy he appreciated him
Muppet pirates are better at telling a guy he’s awesome
(Also can we appreciate what a dramatic, showy, magnificent bastard Izzy is? Slicing his name into Stede’s shirt and now this???)

Lately I've been feeling a huge need for emotionally intelligent, empathetic and thoughtful content about dog training and care. I feel very fragile at the moment and this sort of thing, while also kind of painful in a way, has been helping me be forgiving to myself and understanding to the dogs in my life. I can't get my thoughts straight to write out anything in detail, but I can share the resources themselves.
This episode was soothing. Christina is a beautiful and gentle speaker and her insights are incredibly valuable. I appreciate her desire to stay out of the limelight, but I do wish I had regular access to her thoughts so it's a bit of a shame she doesn't do social media or anything like that.
Choice quote: "Oftentimes I want to raise my hand and be like, can we evaluate this carceral mindset? And I get looks and I think, cool, not the time, not the place. This is not the space, like, shift gears, let it go, try something else."
This post was a really useful reflection tool. I don't identify as a crossover trainer, since I never trained dogs before, but I still relate because I was raised in a punishment first society regardless of dogs. Even as someone who came to dog training committed to R+ from the outset, it still takes rewiring and relearning and reconfiguring to not default to punishment.
Choice quote: "We humans believe that anger is an appropriate response to being wronged. I agree. There is a lot in this world to be enraged about. The problem is directing that rage at dogs and other beings we control. We are encouraged to believe that dogs are morally wronging us, and that appropriate responses are anger and punishment."
I found so much value in this two-part podcast from Animal Training Academy with Michele Pouliot. She had so much wisdom about how to effectively help people and change minds. And sometimes that means being frustrated.
Choice quote: "When we start working with a dog that's never had positive reinforcement training before, you're right, what's the first thing we do? We build a reinforcement history so that dog trusts us, enjoys being around us, and as soon as we have that relationship we can ask more of them... just because a person called you and made the appointment doesn't mean you have a relationship yet... It's the same as training the dog, you have to build the history."
I'd love to find some more media like these. I've been downloading a bunch of new dog books again, but so far none of them are quite scratching the itch I've got. I wish I could read something like The Secret History of Kindness again, that was one of those rare books that had a profound impact on me.

service dog registrations are fake - education post one
So i have not seen a whole lot of service dog content on tumblr and as a service dog handler I would like to see more so i thought i would also start typing facts about service dogs on here to help educate the public. Todays fact is that service dog registrations are fake. Now what the general public thinks of as a service dog is potentially two things. A well behaved lab or Golden wearing a guide harness and or program vest that is probably blue, red or yellow. The dog is in a heel while being feed treats for being a good dog and focusing on the owner. The second "service dog" is a small dog in a Walmart shopping cart barking at everything that does and does not move. When the Walmart employee asks about the legitimacy of this "service dog" the owner pulls out a registration card. The employee does not know that ADA laws so she allows the pet dressed up in a service dog vest to go into the store. So im going to talk about "service dog" number two. The ADA law states that a service dog is not required to show any form of proof in writing or patches that it is a service dog. This includes registrations because the ADA (Americans with disability act) does not recognize them as a valid way to prove a service dog. So if service dog registrations are a scam how do i go get a real service dog. Task one you must have a disability. No matter how severe if it impact you even a little bit and you think a service dog could help you, your on your way. A service dog must me task trained to mitigate your diability. what ddoes this mean, it means that your dog will directly be trained to help you manage your disability. Like it you have chronic pain your dog might do fmp (foward momentum pull) to help preserve your energy. or if you are diabetic your dog might alert to high and low blood sugar and retrieve a diabetic kit for you. However to sum up this post please dont just go buy a service dog vest and slap in on your pet. This cause cause trouble for the people who have real service dogs. along with the fact that it gives real service dogs a bad reputation. thank you for reading if you like this please hit the like button and go follow my Instagram @/mercy_and.me
if you would like to learn more about diability and service dogs go to ada.gov

on an unrelated note:
you know what I really miss? talking sweet to someone. talking them to bed. saying sweet things and reassuring them. I actually think I have a natural talent for it. i love comforting and i’d like to think i’m pretty good at it.
sigh. too bad nobody’s tryna hear my deep, sleepy voice tell them everything’s gonna be okay and that they deserve restful sleep and i’m proud of them.

We went to my favorite used bookstore this afternoon! I was hoping to relax and read out of the house for a little while, but the universe had different plans.
There was a family of five there with three children, around eight years old, all with Downs syndrome. One of the three was in (a super cool imo) motorized wheelchair.
Hek and I have never spent time around kids, let alone kids with special needs. We have worked in labs with rats together, in barns with horses, and walked around multiple zoos. We have never been around children or wheelchairs. It was very interesting getting to see how she handled the situation!
We were of interest as soon as we walked through the door. One of the kids ran screaming up to Bean right away and nearly tackled her with a hug. This child was so determined that neither of her parents could stop her, let alone me. Like a man on a mission! Mom was hot on her heels, though! She was so kind and apologized profusely no matter how much I told her I didn't mind. I mean, how could I be mad?
I think Bean was mostly just surprised by what was happening. I called her name, and she looked at me right away. This is exactly why I always carry treats with me! I was so happy with how she reacted not only to this child but also to me. She deserved a piece of steak in my book.
Hekate and I found a comfortable corner to sit. She watched the kids rather attentively but still alerted to me when I started to fidget too much. Later on, she whined at me when one of them started to cry and hit himself. Even though it's an alert, I did tell her to leave it because Dad came into the rescue right away.

There's nothing inherently more virtuous about using less valuable reinforcers to train a behaviour. If someone assures me that they trained their dog without treats, that does not make me respect them—it makes me think, "Well, that was probably really inefficient. I hope you weren't in a hurry."
Your dog's behaviour is sculpted by its consequences. You can train with The Good Stuff or you can train with The Bad Stuff, but you don't get to opt out. If it has an effect on your dog's long-term behaviour, it goes in one of those buckets. And if I have to choose between treats and threats, I'm choosing treats.

Can I just share something here about my own personal life and why this video really just strikes a chord with me? I'm gonna share it.
When I was a child, I liked so many feminine things. I played with Barbies. I had a feminine attitude. I genuinely thought that I was supposed to be a girl. Because the things that 'girls liked,' I liked. So, I assumed that's what it meant.
Now, my parents didn't validate that. I ended up being just gay and being, you know, a little bit feminine as a man, right?
But if we all just take a step back, and think about our childhood and how good it felt to be rewarded by our parents, how when we did something right and our parents said, 'yes, good job,' how amazing that felt? Because all we cared about was the validation of our parents. Can we just open up the conversation just for a second to think about the potential harms of letting parents do things like this with their children, and what's specifically happening here?
The lighting up of the face of this child reminds me of my childhood when I would get rewarded by my parents. Do we see how easily predatory this can be? Because, if it was me and my parents did this, and I was in the situation that I was in, I would not be the man I am today. I wouldn't.
I understand that dysphoria is a debilitating situation to live with. I truly do. And because of that, I also understand that positively reinforcing that in your young child, who may not be actually experiencing it, who is likely not, is not a good idea.
Positive reinforcement is the most powerful way to shape and mold a child's mind. If we have parents who are told to blatantly affirm everything a child says, it is not setting them up for a life that is going to be easy. Dysphoria is not easy, okay. And it's not something that should be glorified in children.

For a bit of context, the father has established a business based on him putting everything about his family online. Including his wife's miscarriage. So, the kids have grown up online.
Which makes the song "Popular" from Wicked, which touts the importance of popularity over "brains or knowledge," or being "who you were.. or are," even more disturbing. This boy is learning that doing what ever it takes to gain attention and Likes and Subs is the most important thing of all. Especially getting Likes from his father.
And if it turns out his nature is just that, like Clarkson, he's just gay, he's already learned that his father would rather have a "girl."
Hilary Cass cautioned in her interim report that social transition is "not a neutral act" and is "an active intervention."
https://cass.independent-review.uk/publications/interim-report/
Social transition – this may not be thought of as an intervention or treatment, because it is not something that happens within health services. However, it is important to view it as an active intervention because it may have significant effects on the child or young person in terms of their psychological functioning. There are different views on the benefits versus the harms of early social transition. Whatever position one takes, it is important to acknowledge that it is not a neutral act, and better information is needed about outcomes.
