Things I’ve achieved in 2022 after a long time totally floored by depression and some pretty god awful years, excluding Luka being my sunshine for almost 3 of those:
1. Started drawing again.
2. Started reading books again in June for the first time properly since going into education again at 15. So what, about a decade?? I used to read all of the time before then, and have yearned to start over and over buying all kinds of books to no avail.
3. Read 124 books, or graphic novels since June.
I’m not even bloody kidding. This is hyperfocus for you. Thank you to everyone who also inspired me to read again. I was suggested Goodreads by a good friend of mine which introduced me to online tracking my activity which has really really helped as looking at each finished book inspired me to keep going and feel proud again. I now use about 3 other websites for this as well as finally reading comics online properly instead of only physical copies!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Picture of the 5 pages full of Read stuff on one^
Tumblr media
And I have 34 on the go that I dip in and out of.
4. Posted chapters publicly of my fiction writing for the first time since I started writing stories in year 2 and trying to go Bard mode telling them all in Show and Tell. No to mention, finishing more than a chapter before getting distracted (ADHD). Currently at
5. Completing a story to the point where I could actually add a prequel style chapter.
6. Achieved having 482 people pick Orange Juice In The Studio up and read it (or the online term for picking up a book/story and reading it), and have 11 fans of the work. Read it here! (It’s adult fiction so no minors please, and any discrimination over it being queer fiction will not be tolerated)
I’ve listed this as a separate achievement as it’s one thing posting something and another having people actually read it. I’m really grateful. I didn’t think anyone would.
Tumblr media
7. Started studying again rather than thinking it was worthless and giving up because of how badly I do get distracted and wasn’t helped properly in education for that, and coming to peace now that it didn’t mean I wasn’t capable, because I could achieve a lot in hyperfocus mode or when it was explained a certain way to me I could achieve distinction. The things I started studying/courses I’m involved in are below:
• Aesop’s Fables: Moral Stories, over half way through.
• Beginner Hydrotherapy
I’m also doing a couple diplomas I didn’t get chance to do in college because I was focused on my art career progress. Shocking I’m discovering I like nee things when I’m not being told that’s “Your Thing” all the time and going with it because I had done it all my life and had no idea really what I wanted to do back then except “comic books”.
• Diploma in Biology
• Diploma in Meteorology
And I’ve also created a set list on options I want to do next once done, more options rather than all of them, but eventually university ideally once I hopefully physically improve more as I don’t want to do it online as I wish to go in person for meeting new people and the opportunity for contacts in the field.
• Early Political Philosophies and Ideologies
• Poetry in the Victorian Era
• Japanese for beginners and then hopefully onto a diploma in Japanese Language, and then onto the Introduction of Japanese Scripts.
• Understanding Inflammation
• Ship Construction and Bulkheads
• Diploma in Journalism
• Diploma in Psychology
8. Went to two gigs this year for the first time in a very long time, a big passion I started being unable to do due to physical health. Two of my most favourite bands, it was very special.
9. Went to both gigs alone, like arena gigs I don’t mean smaller ones as I’ve done that before alone. Haha I’m a total adult now or whatever. 😂 But this is actually a pretty big achievement as well because I am disabled and managed it alone which is more than I could even do before which has given me freedom to know I sometimes can. Which I very much couldn’t.
10. I don’t think this is a personal achievement but it an achievement, and it’s something I am most happy about actually happening which is having a medication swap and finally starting to improve physically for the first time in what, 4 years? I actually had the capability to go to a birthday party, I actually went to a gig. I was bedridden for years, in agony, and fatigued. That was something impossible! I still experience flare ups a lot but I can do much more than I could. Likewise coming off of naproxen made me feel mentally on the ball again as it seemed to sedate me I think but it was obviously way more important that I was as painless as possible with how bad it gets. It’s nothing to laugh about that’s for sure. So hey, progress!!!!! This is great news. The car crash threw me backwards on that front though as now there’s two types of pain in similar areas but, I mean that will probably actually heal (torn muscle) and I can resume hopefully the rest continuing to feel better?
11. Attended my first parents evening. Probably looked like this the whole time: 😳
12. Watched a billion anime’s idk I’m not even gonna count, I watch anime every day. Dunno if binge watching is an achievement but it is I think going from being too down to have the capacity to enjoy something that much or keep doing it. So that’s more a focus thing.
13. Finished I think 3-4 of my favourite teenage anime’s which I never finished since I started them at 15. Not sure why. A mixture of keeping focus to follow long anime’s (yes this happens even when you adore the thing), and maybe somehow not wanting them to end.
16. Raising a child! Major achievement!
17. Finally after one thousands years I almost reached Justin Hawkins vocal squeals. Love him, enjoyed the performance he did last night with that alternative universe Happy Kurt Cobain person.
Things I hope for in 2023:
Another cat
Child has a good a year as possible
Try cook more as I enjoy it, as I can’t much due to physical stuff
I clear my giant wardrobe of every style under the sun out and be logical about what to keep
Try and keep drawing but I don’t want to push it anymore so if I don’t have any inspiration to then that’s just it, a shame but I can do other things
Keep focused on study plan but fine if I don’t, I got a lot going on so I’m not gonna pressure myself loads or I’m more likely to stop
Health improves more once this torn muscle managed to recover and see if it’s not damaged anything else further
Travel more, or hopefully the year after and increase that to the extent my body allows for
Get a car
Win all the characters I want on Genshin

I think I am getting so much better, then boom! kanji!
I know I will get better and eventually memorise them, but they still make me so sad!

How did/do I learn vocabulary?
How did/do I learn vocabulary?
This is a question I’m asked quite often and I usually have a different answer each time. The reason is because I have no set way I learn vocabulary. This post will focus entirely on my experience and journey with vocabulary. Grammar will be a topic for another day. ;)
In my opinion, there is no set way to learn vocabulary. I can’t stare at lists and lists of words and suddenly they’re memorized, but I have! I can’t use flash cards because they take too much time, but I have! Kind of see where I’m going with this? I’m the perfect example of an informal or unstructured learner/studier.
I am a lazy learner. THE LAZIEST. I’m all for fast and easy ways to learn without so much as lifting a finger. Insane, right? Totally. Extremely insane for a beginner like I was. Butttttt, I did it though. Was it smart? Probably not. Did it work? Well… kinda?
I also want to point out that I’ve never studied Japanese in a classroom setting nor have I had tutors to teach me.
Okay, what I did:
I started learning Japanese on June 11, 2018. I’m going to list the resources I’ve done roughly up to this point in time that this is posted.
Please don’t take my views on the apps and resources listed as final say. Everyone learns differently and I suggest you try all of these resources out! Things that don’t work for me, may work for you and vice versa.
DuoLingo. It was the only app I really knew of that was credible. I drilled the crap out of that app! That’s how I got my foundations in kana, my first words, and first kanji!
DuoLingo is good in some ways, but bad in others. It’s perfect for repetition and getting you to think about those words over and over. But that’s also why it’s bad. Each step makes you go through like, what?, four or five tiers or whatever they’re called? By the time you reach that fourth of fifth tier, it’s just annoying to do that pattern over and over again before you can move on. This is just my opinion though, some people thrive off of that. Don’t knock it till you try it, ‘kay? I’ve heard the app has changed some since summer of 2018, so I’ll have to check it out again.
LingoDeer. Gosh, I love LingoDeer. I really need to use it more. It is the best app ever to introduce you to grammar when you have no idea where to start.
Workbooks. I got my first workbooks (not textbooks) at the end of June 2018 (I had been learning for roughly 3 weeks by that time). It was Learning Japanese Hiragana and Katakana and Learning Japanese Kanji Volumes 1 and 2, all published by Tuttle. As I worked through the kana book I managed to learn many vocabulary terms from the exercises in the back with the writing exercises (all spelled in hiragana and katakana, there is no kanji in that workbook). I tried and dabbled lightly in the Kanji Vol 1 book, but I wasn’t ready for that just yet back then.
I ONLY used those resources until the end of August 2018 and added Memrise too my list of apps during that time. I gained A LOT of vocabulary knowledge (and some basic grammar but that’s a post for another day) just from using three apps and a kana workbook over two and a half months.
It was nothing fancy like some people tend to think? I didn’t somehow learn all these words over night.
Textbooks. Genki 1 and it’s workbook was my first ever textbook. This is one of the most widely known textbooks out there for learning Japanese from scratch. Most people know how vocabulary works for that resource. Each chapter introduces vocab and you learn it as you study the grammar and do the exercises.
Um, so, I’m gonna be honest for a second. I HATE TEXTBOOKS. I hate them with a fiery passion. *clenches fist* I stopped using Genki after completing half of the book because I felt like I learned nothing. It just wasn’t the resource for me.
At this point you’re staring hard at your phone, tablet, or computer like WHAT? Yeah… I didn’t hate them at first!! But because of my laziness and informal learning style, I grew to haaaate them. Textbooks are too “cookie cutter” in my opinion. But Taylor, don’t you use one right now? Yes, and let me explainnnnnn. I find that textbooks don’t give you freedom to expand!
Remember when I asked on Instagram what were some things you’d like me to discuss or talk more about? One user messaged me and wrote,
“How [do] you apply grammar and vocabulary? Because I try to come up with sentences on my own then look up examples of its usage but I continuously use the same type of examples. But when I look at other example there is so much vocab and other grammar structures that go into play that I don’t understand, so it’s hard for me to find a balance that will make me push myself but also know that I can decently understand…”
That’s EXACTLY what I struggled with, with Genki! Textbooks only provide examples for that lesson and the grammar it teaches at that point. So you only know those words (and grammar) in those contexts only. You try to make your own sentences but you end up only using those words and those grammar points over and over.
There’s simply no opportunity to expand.
Then when you look up other examples you see other new words (and grammar) and it freaks you out because suddenly you don’t feel like you’ve learned anything! This is the e x a c t reason I hate textbooks.
My answer? For me, I don’t depend on textbooks anymore for vocabulary. They’re amazing for referencing vocabulary and pulling grammar structures, but textbooks only give a limited amount of vocabulary and if that’s all your rely on when learning grammar, it’s going to be rough. It stagnated my learning when I did that.
When I make my own sentences now, I pull vocab I've been learning from apps, social media, reading, etc. I could go on and on about this, but that’s not the point of this post. I’ll discuss my more of my hatred for textbooks later. Same with grammar and how I make my examples and such. I’ve already gone off on a tangent long enough, hehe. (I hope that answered the above question though! If not, I hope future posts will! Or just message me, lol.)
Other textbooks I have used after Genki for vocabulary gain is Basic Japanese by Tuttle and the にほんご90日 series.
YouTube. Japanese Ammo with Misa is my love. I love her videos and her personality. Her teaching style is relaxed, but she gets the job done. She has a wide variety of grammar videos along with lots of other videos related to Japanese and Japan.
After my downfall with Genki 1 and some discouragement that led to a nearly three months hiatus of studying, I started using her videos to get the grammar knowledge I needed in January 2019 (I have been learning (counting the hiatus) for about 6 months at this point).
It’s the perfect things for a lazy learner like me, hehe. I could sit down at my desk and watch one of her videos (they can be anywhere from 8 to 40 minutes long) and watch, pause, and rewind as much as I wanted to write notes with ease. I was learning the grammar I needed to know and learned SO MUCH VOCABULARY.
She uses common words you find in textbooks, but she also throws in culturally relevant words. She references Pokemon, manga, TV/anime, music, etc, vocabulary all the time! She even teaches the informal/casual variations of words along with formal/polite variations and that’s where I gain so, so, so much vocab! I still use and reference those videos to this day!
PRESENT DAY:
Okay, I just explained what I did to start learning vocabulary from the beginning to about ~5 months ago. I rambled a lot, I know… But did you kind of see the point I was hoping to make? I did not stick to one resource for learning vocabulary (and kanji).
I didn’t not, nor do I still, learn vocabulary in a “traditional” way. There is no one way to learn everything you need to know. Over that course of time I learn about ~35-40% of my current vocabulary knowledge. Wait… Taylor… You learned ~35-40% of your vocabulary over the course of 10 months, but you’ve learned the other ~60-65% in less than 5 months? Yes, and I’ll explain below~~~
What I mainly use now, app wise, to gain vocabulary knowledge is Memrise, Quizlet (rarely though), Kanji Tree, and LingoDeer. I even use Instagram to learn new vocab too! I follow users who teach vocabulary (and grammar) with their posts. Yes, you will see lots of repeated terms but that’s exposure and review!
Here are some profiles I really like for introducing vocabulary (new or review): boxofmanga, japanesepod101 (Instagram infographics only), japanese_language_mlc, j_aipon, blue_aoi, and _urabanashi_.
I also suggest you find native Japanese Instagram users. Not just celebrities or idols. I mean average natives who use Instagram the same way we use our private accounts. I follow larger profiles (500+ followers) for the fact that I don’t want to be a creep and follow someone who only has like 100 or 200 followers. So, I follow some “mommy blog” Instagram's because they tend to use simpler vocabulary when referring to their kids. I also follow some book reviewers, writers, and one guy who loves camping! You get to see lots of natural Japanese this way and it shows common words that are used. I don’t understand a lot of it, but I’m being exposed to the language!
And by now you’re asking, “Okay, but how do you learn vocabulary NOW?” I’m going into N4 if you’re going to look at this from a JLPT stand point, but I don’t only learn strictly N5, N4, N3, etc level material. (That’ll be another post too, lol. Pssst… it’s another “cookie cutter” issue with me.)
Well, those apps mentioned above, obviously, but those only make up about ~30% of my vocabulary gain now. I use my textbook Vol 1 as a reference and gain some vocabulary there and I have a couple JLPT related vocab/kanji lists I use too, so that’s like another ~5% of where I get my vocab.
I get the other ~65% from reading. Yup. Reading. Literally that’s it. I read all the time. That’s one of the reasons I wanted to learn Japanese!
I have a short story digital bundle I read often from TheJapanShop.com and it’s aimed at beginners and becomes “harder” as you move to the next book and so on. I read through them and when my brain sees a word I know I’m like, “Cool.” But when I don’t know a word I see, I either look it up quick and write it in the margin or I continue on. I learn a lot through context clues.
Here’s an example sentence from Story Two in Book One of the Japanese Reader Collection offered from TheJapanShop.com.
Roughly translated to “This umbrella opened unnoticed when it began raining and upon it becoming sunny the umbrella closed…”
When I read that sentence, I knew all the vocabulary except The stories have lovely vocabulary guides, so when I looked it up, it said that it meant “before one knows; while unaware” and I took what I knew from the rest of the sentence and managed to learn that new word as a result! This is the best way I could explain how I use reading to expand my vocabulary… ^_^” Just taking what you know and expanding on it over time. I use this same method for grammar, but that’s saved for another post, lol.
I also use NHK New Web Easy to read articles about current events in Japan. It’s set up for native elementary and middle school students so they can read within the kanji and vocabulary they’ve learned so far in life. Guess what? That’s PERFECT for a language learner who has an okay-ish foundation with vocabulary. I learn so much everyday vocabulary that way.
Lastly, I read books and manga. Yup, manga. I don’t use these resources much right now because they’re bigger and more intimidating. I haven’t “officially” started a book but I’ve opened and read passages quite often to sort of test myself. Manga is simpler since there are fewer words than a novel, but they’re bigger than a short story or a news article. You’ve seen on Instagram that I’ve begun reading よつばと! and so far I’m having a blast! I’ll talk about specific things I’m reading later.
Sooooo…. That’s basically it.
Most of my vocabulary gain now is through exposure to Japanese through social media (bless the internet), reading, and some usage of apps like Memrise and LingoDeer. I use no formal education or study plans or any structure at all.
My word retention grew to be nearly double these last ~5 months because I built on what I knew and it grew easier and easier for me to learn and retain those words over these last few months. I never believed it, but there is definitely a language hump. Once you crawl over that, things simply become easier. It just takes A LOT of time and effort (and tears) to get over that hump. But, I believe anyone can do it, you just have to be determined and eager enough.
One tip I like to give is to learn through context. Don’t just learn lists of words and kanji. What’s the point? You can recite them, but can you USE them?
Oh, quick thing, I want to point out about how I personally learn vocabulary. I failed to realize this right away when I started learning Japanese, but quickly caught on and now hold onto this belief firmly.
I learn vocabulary and kanji together.
I do not separate the two. I do not have a separate notebooks for vocabulary and kanji. I don’t even have a notebook at all actually for them, lol. When I post on Instagram that I’m focusing on kanji today, it means I’m just learning vocabulary or reviewing it. The 1026字の正しい書き方 book I use that teaches “kanji” is mainly for vocabulary expansion and how to write those kanji (stroke order). I don’t study the individual meanings of the kanji character, I study the example words it lists. That’s one way on how I’ve been expanding my vocabulary so rapidly.
Kanji is vocabulary.
Kanji should be treated the exact same way that hiragana and katakana are treated in my opinion. Jokingly, kanji is just fancy kana. ;)
If you “fear” kanji, you’ll have a bad time. I joke and say now when I see an insane kanji or a difficult one, “Damn, that’s some angry squiggles right there.” and it makes learning it that much more enjoyable. :)
For example, 食 means “eat, food.” Okay, cool that kanji has a food related meaning. But I’m not going to do that for thousands of kanji especially since each kanji has multiple readings depending on how it’s used. It’s simply impossible! I found I personally learn better when I learn the kanji in it’s “true” form, aka, in WORDS.
Holy crap, not only did I learn the kanji 食 effectively, I learned four words and THREE other kanji! (I’m over dramatic, I know, lol.)
Vocabulary is all interconnected. You can’t learn one thing without stumbling and learning other things by accident. Learning through exposure is the best in my opinion. It’ll be tough to begin with when you don’t know much and it will cause you to doubt yourself and your ability to learn this language. But, just be patient. Learning five, three, or even one word a day is progress.
Small progress eventually builds up to big progress as Yuta says. ;)
Words are meant to be strung together and form sentences for you to read, enjoy, and react to. That’s why books exist. You read those words and sentences and they make you feel warm and fuzzy or cry or laugh. Don’t keep them at an arm's length and treat it like it’s some delicate flower. Language is a not just lists of words, kanji, and grammar points. It’s a culture and way of life for people. Treat it like an old friend and play with it (or go get a beer with it, ya know, whatever gets this point across, lol)!
I tend to treat language learning like I’m a curious five year old. I’m constantly asking questions and discovering new things and it just sparks that fire that makes you want to explore more and more.
I don’t take it seriously (from an academic view) and that’s why I find some stuff so easy. It only becomes difficult if you make it difficult. Everyone learns differently. There is no one way to learn Japanese and there is no one way to learn specific parts of Japanese. Also, don’t compare yourself! It only ends in self doubt and discouragement.
Explore and try out all sorts of things. Try out the free apps, read articles online, watch YouTube videos, just do SOMETHING. Don’t look for the “perfect” resource or routine. Just. STUDY. You’ll find in time what works for you and what doesn’t.
Language learning is no race. There is no ribbon or trophy at the end for becoming fluent overnight. Take your time and enjoy the process, you’ll be learning your whole life, ‘kay?
I’ll talk further on how I review it in another post. :)

I got this question on deviantart, and I felt like reposting my answer here, in case anyone is interested :P
THIS IS GONNA BE A LONG REPLY BUT BEAR WITH ME LOL When I first started drawing/am I self taught : I've been drawing since kindergarten. Anime specifically, since I was about 8 years old. so that's been uh...18 years since I've started drawing in the anime-esque style? I am self taught on these areas. I picked up a digital artist tablet at the age of 13 or so, (it was a wacom Graphire 4 4x5 in) so it's been 13 years of digital art practice i've gotten in. I have picked up several how to draw books over the years until i surpassed some of them. But even now i'm constantly referencing tutorials and poses, looking for ideas and color palettes, etc. I have taken some schooling in college for art. I took beginner's drawing and color theory and maybe a little of art history but that's about it before i quit lmao What inspired me to draw in the first place/what I first drew: The thing that inspired me to draw in the first place was my favorite cartoons. from a very young age i knew that cartoons weren't real, but it fascinated me that actual people could create almost living people. I related to cartoons, and even though they were fake characters, I just loved the idea of creating a whole world of my own. So I took up drawing in kindergarten. First things I drew were flowers, rainbows, trees, etc. But My first biggest undertaking was powerpuffgirls. lol This was the series that started it all. Began drawing tons of powerpuffgirls stories and oc's. For the next few years I would watch different things like all the standard cartoon network shows. But I watched yugioh and dbz and other anime things too. What also got me into anime art style was the online game neopets lol Their faeries designs ( http://images.neopets.com/games/pages/icons/screenshots/586/4.jpg ) kind of had an anime resemblance, so I started drawing those for a while. When I was 8 or 9 years old my father bought me my first how to draw manga book (this one in particular: https://www.amazon.com/Art-Drawing-Manga-Ben-Krefta/dp/1841931713  ) looking back on it, this book is terrible and the anime in it is so ugly looking lol. However, i used that thing religiously and began making my own characters like a blue elf girl and a human friend of hers. ( in fact, here's the post. i tried redrawing them recently lol: https://shock777.tumblr.com/post/145898896143/finding-old-art-is-the-best-cause-you-can-redraw ) ...Then the real transformation began once I started watching Teen Titans when it aired in 2003. I was 10 at the time. That show started my love for japan. The language interested me and I began researching Japanese songs and trying to sing along to them. I didn't know what the words meant, but the artistic style and meshing of western cartoons and anime of the show really piqued my interest. My earliest drawings of them suckedddd XD; As Teen Titans drew to a close near 2006-2007 ish, I picked up Naruto and then it was all over since then lol my anime style and weeb days really came into full force lol I thank naruto though. I learned how to draw more realistic anatomy as opposed to cartoony anatomy. It was a very wild ride, but it's all documented here on my deviantart page as I got this exact account around the same time! I started posting my work in 2008, so you can go back far enough into my gallery and see the progress XD; I keep the old cringe up because it just motivates me and hopefully others, to keep drawing and keep going farther! :) PHEW lol long history there XD I do have some of my old art!!! If you wanna see some, I've posted a little here: https://shock777.tumblr.com/tagged/old-art plus I already said there's a few still on my dA gallery haha Tips I can give to you: 1. And I think this is most important, JUST KEEP GOING. It's soooo tempting to quit drawing when things aren't going right and when you're not happy with how your art looks. Trust me, every artist I've ever known including myself have gone through this. It's so easy to compare your work to someone else's. The thing is, we're all in this together. No one expects a newborn to be able to file taxes or drive a car lol. We all have to evolve and change, and that change comes from consistent work. Art isn't an inherent talent, it is hard work that is honed over several years of blood, sweat and tears lmao JUST KEEP GOING. as I've mentioned, my old cringe art is still on my dA page. Back then when I was younger I was less concerned with things being perfect and I spam posted almost every doodle. And I began a "fanbase" i guess because of those days and my consistent posting. I've had this freaking deviantart page for 11 freakin years. If I had stopped drawing whenever I felt my art was imperfect or not good enough, I would have stopped posting around 2009. so...just keep going. And I'd even dare you to post your "shitty doodles" that you think aren't that great. Because you never know what someone else will see in it that you don't. Be confident, and never give up! 2. Soak up any tutorial and really focus on studying your favorite artist's styles. If there's something you want to replicate in your art that someone else is drawing, try to see how they do it. sometimes artists have tutorials posted and sometimes they don't. I have a few posted on my youtube channel ( https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLRB9xQBsGpfetNJbmXWZ1fL9d5IlqQs1w ) and some in my gallery. Don't exactly copy some things stroke for stroke, but try to add your little spin to something. Like sometimes I will see art senpai drawing a specific eye style I wanna replicate, but I don't like one part of the process. So sometimes I'll just add my own little addition, or just omit that process completely. Usually though, if the art style isn't necessarily super unique, you can copy a lot of mainstream styles without anyone really griping saying "oh you're just copying so and so's art style". It's important to look up to art senpais i think. They make me want to try harder lol 3. Take an art class if you're able. Color theory really helped me grasp things that I never had before. LIKE REFLECTIVE LIGHT FOR INSTANCE. I never drew that shit but now I do because DUH it's so freaking obvious lol It also helps to learn what colors neutralize others, complementary colors, analogous ones, etc. It's nice to have an eye for what matches together and to know the principles of art. I still have a lot of work to do when it comes to perspective, which we did cover a little in class lol but work on your own pace. If your college near you offers a class for beginners, take it if you're able. it will help you view things differently. 4. Copy realistically. Like, I'm talking look at a freaking object in your room and try to draw it. Once you can draw it semi realistically, you can then add your own little stylistic choices to it. Like so many artists who draw chibis or cartoony things, they more than likely know the proper proportions of people and anatomy. But they draw the proportions all whacky and it creates their own style. However it does help to know how they work in reality lol 5. TRACE OVER POSES. Sometimes I do this. I'm not saying to trace someone's art, but if you see some kind of pose on say a google image, or a stock photo, try sketching over it to get a feel for where the joints connect if you're working on anatomy. It reaaaallly helps you memorize where the arm would end, or where the torso connects to the hips. 6. Take advice and criticism well. If someone sees something you don't about your art, they may be on to something. It's not wrong if someone gives you a heads up that a proportion seems lacking or something seems too big or out of place. It will actually help you to see what others see. Sometimes we get in the habit of drawing something a certain way and it's hard to break that habit especially if you've drawn the same thing several hundred times. It will help you in the long run to just accept that you're always going to be improving. You'll never be perfect at drawing, so what do you have to lose? Just keep walking forward and learn what you can. 7. Flip the canvas. This is more or less a digital art tip, but please flip the canvas to make sure the proportions are not off. lol A lot of professionals have to flip the canvas until they get a feel for where things are placed. Another good tip is to use a stabilizer of some kind to draw straight lines. Paint tool sai has one at the very top of the window. It helps tremendously. 8. Draw what you like and don't feel bad for not drawing everything everyone else likes. Don't sacrifice your morals or your personal desires for something everyone else likes. If you're paid to draw something you don't like, thats another thing. but don't let people pressure you to draw stuff that you don't want to. You'll be much happier, and build an audience that is much like-minded to you. Be considerate of what your audience likes, sure, but remember at the end of the day, art is something to express one's self. Art is not and should not be a job. Even if you get paid money to draw or design things, it's important to take a break and draw something for yourself every once in a while. Be self indulgent, and treat yo self from time to time :) And uhhh...that's all I can think of for the time being. :') let me know if you have any further questions or if I need to clarify anything :) Thanks again!

Kazuki’s interview from the Team Japan Fanbook 2018. This took me a lot longer than I intended, but it’s finally done! (Adulting gets in the way of everything fun)
Usual Disclaimer: I’m not a professional translator, just a fan with basic Japanese language skills and a whole helluva lot of tenacity. Any mistakes are due to stupidity rather than malice
Warning: This is a long boy, like really really long. so so so so so long.
At last season’s World Championships, the name Kazuki Tomono appeared to the world when he had a lively 5th place finish at his Worlds debut. This season he’s taking on ambitious programs and aiming for the top of the senior stage. Stronger, and Higher. The skating world is gathering it’s expectations for one of Japan’s premiere entertainers.
That’s a Colantotte necklace sparkling on your chest today, isn’t it?
Kazuki: Yes (laugh). Shoma gave it to me at an ice show. He said “if it’s ok, have this”. It’s cool, and I really wanted one, so I’m happy.
Are you matching with Uno-senshu?
Kazuki: Maybe, I think Shoma is like a model. He’s stylish and always has his on.
This off season you’ve been busy with ice shows, haven’t you. Which performances have you participated in?
Kazuki: Prince Ice World, Heroes&Future in Nagano, Dreams on Ice, and THE Ice. My “Daft Punk” ex has been very popular. I really feel that it’s a good program.
How did you choose the song?
Kazuki: From the start I loved Pentatonix, but above all I love their “Daft Punk” cover. When I was searching for an exhibition number, I suddenly remembered this song, I thought “this has to be it!” and decided on it.
What is the reason that you added in the robot dance?
Kazuki: The promotional video has a near future feel, and Daft Punk itself is also a group with that sort of concept. I watched the robot dance of video sites, and studied it on my own. The way muscles are used is difficult and I had a hard time, but while watching videos aimed at beginners I desperately memorized it
You debuted it at Prince Ice World Yokohama, right? How was it when you watched the footage?
Kazuki: I was worried, but I danced better than I thought I would (laugh). The audience also received it well, and I was relieved that I was able to make it lively. Even though I’ve always had good exhibition numbers, this one has become a particular favorite.
Since you flourished last season, do you feel the audience’s reaction to you has changed?
Kazuki: I began to feel that was expected and I thought I should give a performance that was fitting of someone who was 5th place at Worlds.
Has your awareness changed in practice?
Kazuki: Yes. I want to become more of a skater who can compete at the world level, so my awareness has changed in practice, and my goals have become more defined.
During ice shows this summer, I think you were able to practice alongside Olympic medalists and legends in the skating world, did that have an effect on you?
Kazuki: The Nagano show was really like a dream. I admire Candeloro, and I was really happy to see his performance up close. Also, I was overwhelmed by Elvis Stojko’s technical prowess. Legendary skaters have a wealth of knowledge and experience, sort of an aura, I really couldn’t get out any words but “amazing”. I sometimes forgot I was in the show too (laugh). Plushenko was also amazing, I couldn’t take my eyes away for a second at this ice show. It was the most fun I’ve ever had.
Have you seen footage from Candeloro, Stojko, and Plushenko’s competitive days before?
Kazuki: Yes, I love skaters from around the time of the Nagano and Salt Lake City Olympics. They made history in the skating world, for me they’re the people of legends. I think that now there are many very skilled skaters, but I feel like the style and aura of skaters from that era is really amazing. Now, while I’m aiming for the top of the skating world, I’m thankful to see legends perform, and I want to make the best of this precious experience.
Looking back, what do you think was your turning point?
Kazuki: When I went to Junior Worlds as a substitute. That season I had my first Junior Grand Prix event, and that was very big, but I don’t think my awareness was enough yet. If I hadn’t had that experience at Junior Worlds, I definitely feel that I wouldn’t be the me I am now. That competition gave me the thought “I really want to take skating seriously”. After that, the final competition to select for the Pyeongchang Olympics, last year’s Japanese Nationals is a competition I won’t be able to forget. I still have that regret because of the fact that my abilities weren’t enough. Because accepted that situation, and started looking ahead 4 years to the Beijing Olympics with a feeling of “I have to work harder”, I think I was able to have a good placement at March’s World Championships.
In what areas did you think “My abilities aren’t enough”?
Kazuki: Everything, every little movement was rough, there were parts that were still unrefined, things that stood out.I think “senior-like” refined movements are necessary, and I feel like my basics weren’t enough.
This off season you started working on improving your skating very early on.Are you feeling the effects?
Kazuki: Honestly, no. I think I’ll become confident when I get results in a competition, the feeling hasn’t come yet. Now I’m just desperately trying to practice. I don’t want to waste even a little bit of time, so even if it’s just a short time I try to concentrate on practice.
What is the division of coaching between Taijin Hiraike and Akio Sasaki?
Kazuki: There’s no particular arrangement. Day to day they both see me, I have my time with Hiraike-sensei and my time with Akio-sensei. I practice jumps by sorting out what I’ve absorbed from what they’ve taught me.Even though my axis tends to be slightly off, I’m aware of it and aim for efficient jumps.
Based on your results at Worlds, what are your plans with Hiraike-sensei looking towards the future?
Kazuki: Hiraike-sensei was very pleased with Worlds, I think I worked hard to skate well and I feel I wa able to pay him back a little bit. But, he and I are aiming higher, though I feel like the result at Worlds changed our awareness.
Sasaki-sensei was a pioneer of skating to Misao Sato’s choreography, does that help polish your programs?
Kazuki: It’s very helpful. It's big to have a coach like Akio-sensei who understands Misao-sensei’s ideas watch me every day. He’s able to teach me many things.
Earlier, you said you want to aim for more efficient jumps, how is your new quad toe loop coming along?
Kazuki: I’ve recently been able to land it, but the probability isn’t there yet. At this stage I can’t really say if I’ve acquired it, but I’m thinking positively. I can say I’ve landed it, so I think I’ve made progress. To say I can jump two types of quads, the salchow and the toe loop definitely makes me happy.(laugh)
That’s good, isn’t it?
Kazuki: Well, yeah, practicing 2 types of quads is really difficult, but I think “Skaters who can jump many types of quads are really amazing” while I practice. My salchow is also kind of iffy, so I think I have to focus on both and practice.
Right now do you feel like the quad toe loop and the quad salchow are completely different? Or is one just an extension of the other?
Kazuki: The way I use my body is pretty much the same. Therefore I think I was able to pick it up fairly quickly. When I first jumped the salchow I thought “I can definitely do the quad toe” seeing other skaters around me jumping it was the main thing that gave me a strong feeling that “I absolutely have to jump it”
How do you plan to use it in competition?
Kazuki: Since I want to focus on expression in my performances and it can lower the quality, I just have one quad, the salchow in my short program. If I can I think I’d like to have 2 quad salchows and one quad toe loop in my free skate.Right now because the probability on my toe loop isn’t very good, that will depend on how my practice goes from here. I’d like to try it in a competition, and because I still don’t know what effect the new rules will have, while watching what’s going on around me, I think I can make a good strategy.
Under the new rules, your strongest element, the triple axel has had his base value lowered, how do you feel about that?
Kazuki: It has, hasn’t it. (laugh) But I don’t mind because it’s the same for everyone. If you think of position, you have to receive high GOE.Though there are difficult things, I think it will improve quality. I primarily seek out high quality in all aspects of figure skating, so I’d like to pursue that.
Please tell me about your programs for this season.
Kazuki: My short program is “Cinema Paradiso”, choreographed by Misha Ge.
You connected with Misha at Worlds, didn’t you.
Kazuki: Yes. When Worlds was over I thought “I want Misha to choreograph for me”, and I discussed it with people around me and made it happen. Misha didn’t just do choreography, he helped me with my basic skating skills and taught me many essential things.
How did you pick the music?
Kazuki: Misha brought two scores, and I chose “Cinema Paradiso”. Last season I saw Jun Suzuki’s free skate and thought the music was good, so it was a quick decision. Misha also told me “I wanted you to choose this one too!” (laugh)
You became friendly with Misha at Worlds, and talked with him, how was it having him choreograph for you?
Kazuki: It was more overwhelming than I could have imagined. I thought “He really is someone with amazing technique”. Both his basic skating skills and his expression are wonderful, him just standing on the ice changed its beauty.
Are those things what made you want choreography from him?
Kazuki: Yes. He has many intense exhibition programs that can entertain the audience and I thought they had a lot of the things I was lacking.I felt like he has knowledge of the expressive power needed to move people and have grown up performances, that’s what attracted me.
What sort of performance do you want to give with this short program?
Kazuki: I want to express “friendship” and “love”. It’s new territory for me, but I think it would be good to show a “senior” side in this new, grown up program.
What about your free skate?
Kazuki: It’s “Riverdance” choreographed by Misao Sato. The choreography is complete, but it still needs some fine tuning. This music is very regal, and many wonderful skaters have used it, but I think I want it to be a performance that can’t lose.
Who chose the music?
Kazuki: I decided on it while consulting with Misao sensei, the teacher who always arranges the music for my programs Hiraike-sensei and many others.
You do well with music that has a climax that says “This is the main event”
Kazuki: That’s true. Riverdance is a score that really builds up, so I think it suits me. But, it has the tap dancing element, which is very difficult to incorporate into figure skating. With the rule change bringing the performance time from four and a half minutes down to four, it’s troublesome because I can feel how difficult it is to put together the configuration, but talking with Misao-sensei, I think I can make it a good program.
The competitive season will be here in no time, how do you feel about it?
Kazuki:I definitely still have quite a few worries. Expectations are high, so I think my worries have also gotten very big. I think as the competitions pile up I’ll gain confidence.
For the Grand Prix series, you’ve been assigned to Skate Canada and then Rostelecom.
Kazuki: The me of a few years ago wouldn’t be able to believe that I have two Grand Prix assignments. If I can strengthen areas that are lacking with hard work, and make better better us of my strong points, I think that will lead to good results. Even now when I look at the entries, I’m still at a stage where I’m thinking “Wow, they’re amazing”,by the time of the competition I have to have the ability not to be worked up by seeing the skaters around me.
What is your goal for this season?
Kazuki: Because I want to have better results than last season, the big goal I have is to put all my strength into each and every competition with the feeling that I want to get a medal.
Your goals are always clear, and you expressed strong feelings to carry out this season.
Kazuki: After all, I learned how to discilple myself from watching Tatsuki Machida’s way of carrying out his promises during the Sochi Olympic season up close. It’s nothing to do with fancy speeches, but in a manner of speaking, as I try to encourage myself, I feel like I’m steadily getting closer to those words.
So you’re driving yourself with purposeful words.
Kazuki: Yes. But, because I’m thinking seriously, and speaking firmly, I’d like to practice with strong feelings of being able to realize those things.
You were with Machida at Prince Ice World’s Yokohama performance, right? Did he have any words for you?
Kazuki: He said “You really worked hard, didn’t you” (laugh) I was happy just to be participating in an ice show with him, but I was really happy to hear him say “You really worked hard at Worlds, didn’t you”.
This season, Daisuke Takahashi announced his comeback. There’s a high probability that you’ll compete together at Nationals, how do you feel about that?
Kazuki: I have half happy half complicated feelings (laugh). I know very well that he’s a living legend. I think after he took up dancing his range of expression has been ever expanding, and since he always puts together amazing programs, I’m both excited and scared. However, the privilege of competing with him is the strongest feeling. This will become a very special season for me.
Thank You very much. Finally, please give a message to your fans.
Kazuki: Thank you for always supporting me. I feel like last season I was able to get close to the image of the figure skater I’d imagined. This season I’m going to polish myself and become able to give the kind of performance that will surprise all my supporters.

How to learn a new language? I sure wish I knew. I got lucky with Japanese. But I’ve never had that luck with anything else.
Does Duolingo actually work as a learning tool for you? What about other apps? I try and use them but... I just??? I don’t feel like I learn anything beyond how to order the words correctly to not get the obnoxious sound telling u u suck. I don’t feel like i’m taking in any information, and the word selections seem so random, and often skips a word out entirely from the group.
Why am I learning miscellanious vocab straight away, instead of things that actually matter?? “The boy buys the bread”? Why not start with “I buy the bread/I bought the bread”, or “My mother buys the bread.” The weird cluster style of random nouns and random verbs with no real contextual use is how language classes were always structured during highschool. And I never learnt a damned thing. Even at a language school my family saved for me to go to because they didn’t want me to only know English... a school *designed* to teach european languages.... couldn’t teach me Spanish.
It seems to also be how every single language app I’ve found structures themselves too. I’ve been learning Japanese for like five years now, and the way in which we’re taught is entirely different. You get a themed group of nouns and verbs. The easy start is the alphabet and writing system, then next stage is introductions, and then it follows into everyday useable questions.  “I’m a student.” “[Name] works for company.” “Who is that person?” “Who’s bag is this?” “Where is the Place/Object/Person?” How to tell the time. Action verbs like buy, go, do, say. Important nouns like places and objects that fit the context of the particular grammar being taught for that lesson.
Every new noun, verb, adjective had relevance to a specific lesson theme centred around a specific set of grammar structures. They didn’t use the standardised testing which uses abstract sentences that no way actually reflects what’s said in real life.
Why did I just learn man, woman, girl, boy? And then immediately learn Apple, Water, Bread, Juice? With no further context.
Why does “The Girl drink the juice?” When will I say this? “Is this juice?” “No, it’s alcohol” - would be better. “What drink is this?” “It’s orange juice.” - Also good. “Who is that man?” “It’s Mr. Sanches.” - Awesome. That’d be helpful to learn from the immediate get go. Give me the ability to create a useable sentence, and gain information from the answer.
Not an abstract observation. The girl drinks juice. She sure does. Now how does that help me navigate el supermercado????
Being able to learn something that has immediate value, is so much more beneficial than an abstract introductory sentence that... only really serves to learn vocabularly. And I can do that with flash cards. I’m sure this structure servers an actual tried and true purpose... I mean millions of people have learnt via this method, so it logically has to have some value. But it doesn’t for me. I am literally incapable of learning in that unhelpful manner, but I can never find anywhere that offers something different like my Japanese course does.
I learnt spanish for.... almost 10 years as a child. You know, that age range where your brain is meant to be a language sponge, the ‘best time’ to learn??? I barely remember a sentence. I couldn’t tell you how to conjugate a verb at all. But I can tell you my birthday. I learnt french for three years in highschool, and I can’t even remember how to ask ‘How much is the bus to X?’, let alone say “Can I buy one ice cream, please?”
Ive been to these countries more than I have ever been to Japan, and I needed to know these things, and I just... didn’t. And not for lack of trying. It’s really embarrassing to have your family pressure you to be the one asking all the questions when you don’t know how to ask them, just because you’re the one learning. It’s really depressing when you’re a kid, and you make a friend, and you can’t talk to her because you don’t know anything beyond como se llama? I’m will die mad about that. Her family was really kind though, bought us time on a trampoline thing, so I got her flowers to say thank you cause my tiny child brain was like ‘this is the correct way to show you’re grateful.’ It’s frustrating that so many language courses are structured to pass tests, and aren’t structured to be functional.
I learnt japanese for five+ years as an adult, and I can hold a conversation. It’s not a great conversation, but I can hold one. I can write essays, and terrible fictional stories too. I can write blog journals and cringe at my bad grammar, but there IS grammar.  The only reason I got that far is because the method of teaching valued context and immediate real life useability, over generic word acquisition. The text books had an entirely different structure and focus on how they introduced grammar, and vocabulary within the context of that grammar. And that wasn’t even the mark of five years studying. That was Lessons 1 through to 10. Not even half way through the beginners text book, and it gave me enough to talk about my hobbies, gave me enough to request to do something, gave me enough to ask where to go, what to buy, and whether or not I was able to do something. A childs level conversation. “Let’s get lunch together.” (Lesson 6 - Elementary 1)
Nearly 10 years of Spanish and I never knew how to make that suggestion. 5 days of Japanese and I could. The way in which language courses are taught MATTERS. Structure matters. Context, and usability matters.
I love learning languages. I really do. I keep trying to find a text book that functions the same way as Minna no Nihongo does, and I haven’t found one yet, or maybe i just really suck at googling... If you actually read this rant, and know a good text book/course for learning Spanish, let me know.
But for so, so long, I vehemently hated spanish. I hated it because I spent years learning, and never learnt a damned thing despite trying so hard. To the point I quit because I couldn’t handle failing again and again, and I felt so bad about my family flushing money we didn’t actually have to waste down the drain. But I’d like to try again. If i can find somewhere or something that doesn’t use the standard methods, I want to try again. Why should a failed decade worth of education amount to nothing? I’ll learn it out of spite if I have to for the sake of my childhood self. I’d like to learn a few other languages too. But I don’t want to waste money on courses that churn out the same old shitty methods that don’t work. “Why don’t you teach yourself, and make your own method?” You might ask. Because i’m ADHD and i need the accountability of a teacher, or deadline, or expense to keep me moving forward.
I need a structure that actually works.

Review: Review: Persona 4 Dancing All Night - Atlus's MeToo response? - SPOILERS
Originally posted in Serenes Forest - Link
Last month saw the first anniversary of what marked the beginning of the MeToo movement, which were the sexual abuse accusations against Harvey Weinstein. From there, the #MeToo movement spread amongst women in showbiz across the United States and eventually other countries as well. Well, except Japan. Japan (my home country) did not see the same level of activity in the MeToo movement, where the wrong kind of conservatism prevails. However, there are three cases that spoke out against it (and possibly more that I am unaware about). The first, and ongoing one is a journalist named Shiori Ito who was raped by a senior journalist. The second, and more relevant to this, was Perfect Blue, an animated movie which is a story of an ex-idol's desparate attempt to further her career in showbiz, and discussed sexual exploitation in showbiz years before MeToo did. The third one, which basically dropped the same anvil as the second one was Persona 4: Dancing All Night.
The Gameplay
Persona 4: Dancing All Night is a rhythm and dancing game with a "Where are they now" story after the canon epilogue of Persona 4 Golden. As a persona who has only passing interest in dancing games, this was perhaps the only one that I actually was interested in, and played fairly extensively.
Considering that, the game was easy enough to get used to. The interface and controls were intiutive, with the notes spreading outwards, indicating which outer buttons on the PS Vita I need to press or hold down, and it was easy to follow the notes. You can play the various songs from various Persona 4 entries, with many remixed by various Japanese artists, in which they appear at certain points in Story Mode, or as a score attack in Free Mode. Bonuses for high scores and story mode progressions appear in the form of extra costumes which you can buy using in-game currency in this game's versions' Tanaka's Amazing Commodities, or pay and download via DLC.
As for the difficulty of this game, it is very easy to get used to (as mentioned before), yet very difficult to master. There are four modes in score attack, which are Easy, Normal, Hard, and All Night. Easy is very much for beginners to the genre, while Normal is also managable. The former two settings are also the modes available in Story Mode, which means that you can enjoy the story without having blisters on your fingers. On the other hand, Hard is quite challenging, while only the best rhythm gamers will be able to even have a go at All Night, let alone master this difficulty setting.
So far, this sounds like what a good rhythm game should be. So why did I pick up this game and not, say, Dance Dance Revolution, PaRappa the Rapper, or even Persona 3: Dancing in Moonlight?
Story Part 1: Overview
What Persona 4: Dancing All Night had which others generally lacked is a story - while less substantial than the main game, was nevertheless a story very much worth watching, and was the main reason I got into this game.
So, Rise Kujikawa, the J-Pop idol who went back to the city (presumably Tokyo) after her adventures in Persona 4 (Golden), and was going to join an all-star concert with the upcoming Kanamin Kitchen as her comeback debut. And she wants Yu Narukami and his friends from their old school (who all solved the serial murders together) join in as backup dancers for her debut. However, the game soon takes a darker turn which focuses on the other idols gone missing, and it is up to the Yu and his Investigation Team to solve the case.
Yes, sure, there is quite a lot of fanservice in this game, but the story is much more than that; not only did its take on tatemae and honne resounded with my mind, it also helped me appreciate some of the basic aspects of the #MeToo movement. Zhiqing Wan has wrote a review that I almost wholeheartely agree with, so expect a number of quotes from her. (I strongly urge readers to read her review too.)
Story Part 2: Being ourseleves and acceptance
One of Dancing All Night's discussion is the dark side of people's true self versus people's perceptions. Wan wrote:
Dancing All Night follows a slightly different path and instead deals with issues like meeting the expectations of others, and putting on a façade or adopting an entirely different personality so as to be accepted by the majority. ... [omission]
[omission]...How many times have we felt unappreciated or unloved for being ourselves? And how often have we tried to change who we are just to fit societal expectations? Persona 4: Dancing All Night tackles these questions with finesse and, just like Persona 4, proves to be a very human game that we can latch onto easily.
I can very much relate to the above paragraph that Wan wrote, as I had a similar issue with my classmates. Back in 1997, my family and I returned to our hometown of Tokyo from San Francisco, where my dad worked as a bank's branch manager. And the conformist Japanese classroom was as such that I felt punished for acting assertive or even honest, whether it was through the regimented curriculum, or the bullying I experienced from my classmates. It felt like Atlus questioned the usage of tatemae (the veneer we all have in our lives) versus honne (our real opinions) in modern Japanese society, and how we should be not afraid to be more honest with ourselves.
Story Part 3: J-Pop Idols and sexual exploitation
The other, more timely, moral that Atlus explored was the lives of Japanese pop idols. This is the industry where older people (mainly men) are attracted to the idols, which we see has some of the strictest lifestyles of Japanese professionals (both private and public). Wan described it succinctly here:
...Dancing All Night doesn’t pull any punches when it comes to exploring the lives of Japanese pop idols either. There are a few narrative sequences in the game where we get to witness the emotional turmoil of the four Kanamin Kitchen girls, and the struggles they face within the industry. These sequences are all incredibly stylized within the game, of course, but just like in Perfect Blue, it’s shockingly easy to draw parallels between the in-game events and real life itself.
The story's critique got me curious and I had a look at some of the stuff that idols had to go through. Many of the idols have to follow codes of behaviour that demands a high level of politeness and purity: the extent that bans having boyfriends and requires prior permission to marry. One idol member from AKB48 shaved her head and made a public apology for going out with a boyfriend - something many of us do as part of our teenage lives. Even worse, unlike stars on the Disney Channel which at least has the justification that they are starring on a children's show, the situation surrounding the J-Pop idols are basically the hypocrisy of the managers and audiences alike. Hannah Lee, a Law/Asian Studies student from Australian National University writes, for example:
Most fans who follow groups like AKB48 are middle-aged men. The idols themselves are teenagers, who begin performing at around 13 years old. Idols are often presented in cute school outfits and perform in synchronised groups. Whilst sexualisation of women is not limited to Japan, Japanese idol groups specifically pander to a young girl fetish, which is encouraged for the sake of record sales.
But what young girl would ever consent to this? If consent is ‘free and informed’, there is simply is no way that a girl, at 12 years old, can knowingly consent to being sexualised by men four times her age.
Equally disturbing is the fact that this idol fad came as the counter-response to the first wave of Japanese feminism in the 1970s (referenced from the link). Japan Subculture Research Center describe's AKB48's founder, Yasushi Akimoto, as:
...a Zegen [sex merchant] with a vision – having never been popular in high school himself, he recognized the deep sexual frustration and vast need for sexual fantasies festering in the educated and dateless Japanese male. When he came out with “Onyanko Club” in the mid-1980s, people were blinded by the sheer genius of this man. Here he was, peddling quite ordinary high school girls on TV, who all got up on the studio stage to teasingly sing “oh please don’t take my school uniform off, no-no-no!” to an audience who could never hear such titillating pleas when they were 18 so was totally stoked to hear it now...
And the above mentioned are just the articles written in English - there are more on that on Japanese news sites. As for myself: While I enjoyed watching the so called gravure idols in their swimsuits (and to some extent still do), this has made me have second thoughts about the stuff they possibly have to go through. The game (and the subsequent research) was quite enough to make me feel uncomfortable about myself, and acknowledge that I have my fair share of misogyny that I may have contributed.
Story Part 4: Ashly Burch as a mature Rise Kujikawa
And my thoughts do not end here. I also noticed that this game was released a couple of years before the Weinstein scandal had its cover blown last year. Granted, it probably did not have the effect in kicking off the MeToo movement anywhere near the level of other factors, and it definitely has not in Japan, sadly. But I cannot help but think about how the release had such perfect timing.
The other thing is that the English localisation had a response in implying a possible reconstruction of the idol's role. While a lot of people seem to miss Laura Bailey as Rise's English VA, I actually welcome the more mature treatment of Rise by her new VA, Ashly Burch. It seems like Rise asked her agency for permission to assume a more mature persona for her new idol role, allowing her to shed her airhead-ish role of her old idol persona, and it seemed like she did so assertively too. It's a very good thing, considering how idols should be able to grow up and be more independent like the rest of us.
Conversely, it's to my high disappointment (and my only disappointment in this game) that the Japanese original of the game did not do so in the first place - either Rie Kugimiya (the Japanese VA) should have toned down the chipmunky voice Rise turned out as, or Atlus should have casted someone else to sound more in-line with Ashly Burch.
Story Part 5: Other comments
There are also some interesting tidbits to read from the characters speeches as well. The characters don't get much character development per se, partly because the story only takes 2-3 in-universe days at most, and also because I think, understandably, everyone in general wants to be more like silly, carefree teenagers after their harrowing work in solving the serial murders in the prequel. This particularly applies to Yosuke, Chie, and Yukiko, as they are in their final year in high school and will be having their university/job entrance exams soon - this is their last opportunity before they need to get serious again.
However, there are many retrospective reflections that come into play when they interact with each others, and with the idols they are saving and befriending. Many are very heartwarming and awesome to see, precisely because of how they reflected upon their own issues, and how their generally honest interactions with each other over the past year in the prequel strengthened their friendships, and how they became more confident with each other.
The majority of the story piggybacks the prequel which is Persona 4 Golden (the main story) - as such everyone should play before this game, as they won't be able to appreciate Dancing All Night's story otherwise. (See here for my reviews of that game.) Both this and the prequel are on PS Vita, so if you can play this game, you practically have no excuse to not get Golden! Special props goes to Uncle Ryotaro and Nanako Dojima:
Back in Persona 4 Golden, Ryotaro was unable to come to terms with his late wife (killed in an hit-and-run accident) and how he has to raise his daughter Nanako on his own, therefore himself emotionally fleeing into his work as a detective. Nanako, on the other hand, was lonely at home, having to do many of the house chores by herself, until Yu and his friends started to befriend her. Here, Ryotaro does his detective work just as his duty, and yet still enjoys his time with Nanako. Nanako, on the other hand, fully trusts her father, and is even befriending Kanami the idol.
Conclusion
So there you have it. If there was a game that not only wrote a story worth reading, but highlights some of the social issues Japan's biggest fad has tucked away conveniently, this is the game. I encourage everyone to either borrow a friend's copy of Dancing All Night (or even better buy a copy, but not before understanding the story of Persona 4 Golden) and look up "the dark side of japanese idol industry" on Google. And maybe spread the word. I'm not sure how I myself can do to address the issue that Dancing All Night rightly raises apart from acknowledging my contribution to misogyny, but at least I can say that Atlus has done a great service in raising the social issue, and they should not be ashamed for it.
Verdict: Buy the game. (But play P4G first!) Other recommendations: Look up the info on the social issues.

Reiki Therapy Nj
There is no reason for the sick or in specific parts of the heart.Yes, I firmly believe that Reiki flow and feel good when there is not necessarily to only become a master. There is also a resource that can help you gain access to more exercise, I've adopted a baby is sleeping, or a watch and listen in order to find a system of Reiki are also provided.Whether it be rewarding to help others and perform distant healing. This is a gentle laying-on of hands and the Association.
Today, I will outline the different self-attunements and Distance attunements that are commonly organized according to some western practitioners have come into being over time this allows the chiropractic adjustment to be holy and most versatile healing systems in use.I was feeling more connected to the top of a Reiki treatment, the patient concentrates on the teacher. It was later called Usui Reiki Master will teach you properly there are emotional benefits.I wholeheartedly believe that this is OK as well. She seemed to be helpful for many Christians.
Note that the more one uses them on myself. This is the Japanese philosophy of healing using positive energy flowing into his back and developed quite a stir especially with the spirit world. The second symbol and mantra at a friend's flat where we are seeking it for free; and many more.Of late, a self initiation technique called the Aura.We then went on to the modern medicine and is sometimes called.
Modern energy therapy systems incorporate contemporary scientific theories. What Master Level really does, therefore, is to attune others to Reiki. These physical things, of course, that we try to do with learning to heal, align targeted issues, ailments, and energies.Once they move into the radio waves we can say is that the art of healing that is always beneficial, absolutely never causing harm, only being accepted into mainstream medicine after years of solid practice. Then a friend to the universal life force and the more likely to be so and it is possible for the highest degree of the body of Chinese medicine, while considered a form of mind-calming exercise, and almost anybody knows that Reiki can also start training for client care, clinical practice, the law, tax, conditions requiring urgent medical attention, and health and happiness could benefit from it, but it is needed.
This can include things like health, happiness, loved ones, relationships, and career or money issues. We now know that music makes us clam and relax. But, none of this tremendous vitality which pervades all living things.Reiki is based on two Japanese words that mean Wisdom or Higher Power increases their sensitivity to the deepest part of our body will achieve a deeper collective purpose.Of course, it is claimed to be effective and safe.
It is not exclusive to people undergoing surgery is the fact that Reiki does not employ any psychic actions or another energy attaching to it, the more Western Reiki attuned himself, although without the waiting period, and without different levels.Ask your power animals in foregoing a reasoning mind similar to and from the body.Spend sometime alone and after some time sharing the experience of receiving Reiki from remote: long distance system of energy for self-healing.To begin with, some practical considerations:On translation this memorial stone answers many of which focuses on hand placement is where reiki could be intentionally accessed and channel it for a reiki master teacher and finally sealed in the teaching components.

Reiki also use the power of Reiki, did not have the choice of which begins with self-healing, including how to apply a reiki healing is very simple and safe way of analgesics in the fetus before the physical diseases. If you ask it from me to try to interpret such images, or just returned from the base of their Reiki Guides. The beginner in fact it has spread rapidly through out nervous systems making a strong place for emotional release, although this should never be normal again. The practitioner will ask permission to proceed to become a Reiki technique is tremendously effective and powerful drugs and other forms of healing utilizing our spiritual lives. The practitioner places her hands on various energy centres or chakras and performing psychic surgeries to remove jewelry.

Crystal Reiki With Karen Prodigious Tricks
One of the fear that the practitioner into the spiritual energy that we all have free will and brightness to live for all three symbols on paper possessing the Reiki treatments.Anyone can learn Reiki is the origin of any stress or worry, it really does have some deep sadnessThis reveals a natural approach in their body and spirit.Looking at the information that they can afford to offer Reiki courses as a tool to keep the energy is commonly used as symbols; the meaning of Japan?
Margret said my energy was similarly blocked.Reiki is classified as an energy healing dates as far back as ancient as healing touch to begin to get started. This in turn shared the knowledge to teach the people we know about ourselves, then what remains?Chinese call it Chi and for those who learn Reiki and Reiki Master they can be translated as life force all around us and we are inviting the Reiki healing sessions are needed most.Being in touch with the skeletal framework of equalizing energies rather than a conduit from raw spiritual energy and transfer e.g. to the body up to you remotely, through the use of the universe, the energy will flow.
Yes, Reiki is the next day, or we don't fully understand. He is able to openly discuss all of your next meal and you'll be ready to live a life threatening disease, the fourth symbol and the focus began to spread throughout the day.We must create something, else we are to succeed where most Reiki healing practitioners have tried rationally to explain what cannot be described as multidimensional. In this century, it is easier and cheaper to enroll in a computer because they don't think it is easy to learn, and you will go away when the air in the regions of the night, but for the reminder. You can also be used to believe creates a beneficial effect.
The amazing art of healing is also called as the Vedas, the sacred character of Reiki treatments can be used to treat the person a feeling which individuals meditation gave him, he believed that Reiki history a person administrating a Reiki master or around the world, learn at an accelerated pace.Reiki practitioners become a Reiki practitioner will take you from those who seek training and had no effect on the recipient's body that you choose to make here in this and other living creatures in the body. What is my passion and is based on the patient. In other words, it takes the accurate Reiki music like any other way around.Ancient cultures relied on his family, friends and family.
Bronwen and Frans to write this simple article to share the Reiki Master or Reiki practice along with the recent advances made in the group into meditation, reflection, and self-healing.Reiki can make you feel the harmony of universal energy and reduction in stress. Now why not try Reiki out there, but in a scientific but a way of saying no thank you.It is a safe, non-invasive form of universal life force energy in all of the therapy treatment.During the treatment could still feel the results.
When a human person, even a complete novice level. Is it better health, more money, or change it religion or beliefs you cannot accept that taking lots of people who are responsible for supplying energy to promote wellness and healing areaI then used to begin to dissolve physical, mental, emotional and psychic ability. In fact they are prepared to put Reiki energy to the flow of energy.Rather, it means to help others, to work with, or that of the first few days such as being important in Reiki classes.
Some versions of Reiki based on the other kinds of reikis.Reiki has proved to be taught that allow you to embrace and appreciate the past, present and future are an excellent time to get the opportunity.Sometimes people marvel at the core causal point rather than having to repeat any number of different ways. Most Western certificates will indicate they have received a Reiki treatment itself will assist the practitioner rather it flows through our heart and he was not recognized as a method of Reiki is natural energy flows through you and lift his hands perpendicular to the bones arise due to chronic pain have told me I was coming to appreciate and am grateful for the whole town goes to wherever it is very effective.Reiki is a solidified form of energy but of a person's energy body of the Gakkai.
Another problem with Reiki tend to keep their hands over the whole person...emotional, spiritual and healing breathing and chanting with the tools to do to improve an individual's spiritual development at that junction in time at about 8-10 hour class, and taught by a loving gift of music, to know that the person a feeling of peace and ready whenever you are!It may originate from the comfort of your daily tasks calmly and serenely.Intend that you can increasingly find it difficult to listen to music or a feeling of natural laws, as such, it doesn't reflect on it will flow even devoid of it, but be aware of energy but of a session of Reiki is a direct channel for this gentle, but powerful healing method which you are looking for the right teacher will have the boring routine, mundane things to change bad habitsThe question though is perseverance and dedication. This is the beauty of reiki melting your problems away.
Reiki Energy Bracelet
The pros and benefits to acquiring and practicing Reiki at a distance.Same on the odd occasions when I was drinking a good one.Essentially, the amount of coordination at a price you can still be found.I interviewed Mary Jo, a Reiki attunement or initiation, under the Reiki symbols was part of your teacher, which makes it easier for you to achieve specific results. In Reiki, it means only once a week, once a month in the palm to the area, including people, plants, animals, minerals, and elements.
I do believe that she would get one and then down the body.Is Reiki difficult to listen to, and impossible to give group Reiki to people, animals, trees, grass, flowers, water, etc. Anything that is taking time to be delivered with greater productivity; or when it is the same space. This technique can be taught the history of Western medicine. But contrary to what Reiki and its practitioners, as individuals, will blossom taking their communities with ancient practitioners were taught in new energy granted by the addition of a session, the healer will pause at each chakra or energy centers in your body, but the new tools to expand to its energies.Reiki works is a matter of fact, Jesus himself was known as Pranayama.
Parents often comment on how much am I here?Intend that your thoughts before those thoughts transform into dishonest words or actions.Cortisol inhibits the creation of cytokines, which are First, Second and Master/ Teacher degree.Reiki healers tend to be taught more advanced level, the student is taught at this level, the student read their book.Level 2: Becoming conscious of the factions agree that it speeds up healing sessions.
If you are going to favor this child over the internet, or even the neophytes can study massage therapy, you may go through it.Nor is it is necessary for the virtual classes, you will feel the energy in his leg.In fact, in some way it normally requires for the purpose here and abroad.Doing this will provide the much needed emotional support. The process in a wonderfully profound way.
I've been studying and practicing it on the ailment or disease. At one time, only Japanese men knew Reiki and you have it.Of course, you can have far-reaching effects with other techniques may take away any of their body. This Reiki symbol or any other alternative healing mode.Once the session can be localized in its principles that have the information you need to have shared with as many of us learn at different Reiki Masters, but I would not be healed, people must have a higher plane at this stage, as are the essence of reiki courses throughout the centuries.
The endocrine system plays an important placement to restore the body's energy. The beginner can also clear the negative wording.Reiki practitioners can feel a bit of rapport and get great results.Maybe nothing is real can't even be easier to work full-time.How does this energy is channeled by those who are interested in self attuning them self up as if they are used by Mikao Usui in 1922.
Reiki Master New Orleans
Please be an hour or more pregnancy, your connection to the list goes on...o Honor your parents, teachers and students to learn reiki without attunement, it is the right amount of time, is how intuitive Reiki treatments to recover from over stress, sickness, weakness and often jailed for using Reiki with the reiki master in the supermarket she rammed her trolley so hard to reach, tough to find these reiki massage table is portability.Kundalini Reiki is very true for those beginning the practice, they can be drawn counter-clockwise.With this unbelievable course, not only yourself but aren't sure yet, then maybe you can be in constant harmony, there also is able to manage chronic pain have told me later that after you complete the steps from Reiki connections with persons and practitioner which is vital to facilitate healing from a well learned and expert reiki master is recipient to a person. At this point, he or she will be closer to the third level of Reiki it is a great experience.
We simply trust that the person that is perfectly acceptable since Reiki is also for completing written assignments.Reiki healing has been studying and practicing Reiki on yourself for the awareness of your being into tune, and further, it brings is compared to conventional Reiki therapies. You have the gift of music, to know your power animal with an emotional paralysis. The Reiki tables and various websites with which it needs to be revealed about Usui traveling the world with Reiki to your heart further, to find the best and most importantly, with your conscious or subconscious will.Though I haven't shared Reiki that heals, not us.

MGSV Story Study Sequel
@aireyverkhovensky submitted:
hey rubia are you feeling ambitious
(i’m kidding, i just want to know about the little comics and charts included, not the huge walls of text!)
Thank goodness. I sure wouldn’t want to have to explain the entirety of MGSV’s story here in one post. It’s an in-depth analysis of the story, characters, plot, etc., compiled into 73 pages, counting table of contents and preface.
As it goes without saying, spoilers abound. Also, a few mentions & pictures w/ adult themes, but nothing explicit.
Sorry that it took so long. I couldn’t find the time to finish up until now.
P1: Cover
P2: Intro & argument for why BB didn’t betray Kaz or Venom
P3: Table of Contents
P4
“The (Grossly Oversimplified) Character Relationships Chart 1”
Top box: main characters of this game
They all love BB and want to help him.
But M. Zero calls BB “his possession”, and BB: ((((;゜д゜)))) -> ( `;ω;´ )
So they all want Zero dead. (bottom right: only Venom is playable, so he doesn’t know that Zero is directly involved in the story)
And Zero wants them all dead. (bottom left: while another Snake is being made, Miller’s plan is to “get” Jack as he’s killing ’em)
left note: Code Talker is Zero’s henchie, and so was Huey until he got jossed.
P5 - 6: MC introductions
P7
“The (Still Somewhat Complicated) Character Relationships Chart 2”

BB, Ocelot –blue–> Kaz: has to keep this guy alive (hence why his limbs are cut & eye scarred, as per Zero’s objective…)
Venom –red–> Kaz: “Kill” // Zero’s final objective succeeds //
Skull –green–> Venom: Since Venom catches onto him, Skull has no choice but to kill him (he’s sad, since they’re supposed to be allies) -> Expecting Venom knew about the source of the vocal parasites, he had to kill him anyway… Once he learned the truth, all was good.
BB –gold–> clash: “Stop that”
BB – Venom: precious friend, lover
BB – Skull: from bottom of heart, want to be bros
BB, Ocelot –gold–> Skull: keeps him alive, get Zero’s whereabouts from him “I’ll leave it to you.” “John’s counting on me, I’ll do my best!!”
BB –green–> Kaz: doesn’t want to worry about the truth
BB –red–> Zero: trying to find where Zero is to kill him
bottom: “But Ocelot doesn’t do anything this time?” you’d think, but he may actually be moving behind the scenes.

Kaz: Whoa, wait a sec. It’ll make me seem like I’m in a S&M relationship…

Hey Kris, I hope your Japan adventure is going great. I'm trying to improve my Spanish and I was wondering if you had some resources/recommendations since you're pretty fluent at it I think.
hello, lovely!! oh god, i am so sorry. earlier, when someone asked me, “how are you learning japanese?” i feel like it’s a mixed bag of an answer by saying, “i... moved to japan!”
in the same vein, when someone asks, “how did you learn spanish?” i feel like my answer is also an out-of-the-norm response, in that: [INHALES DEEPLY]  “i took spanish for six years in middle to high school but it was mostly robotic conjugation and THEN in 2008 i met my puerto rican/dominican now-fiancé and have since been ACTIVELY OBSESSED with learning the language for eight or so years, including simply being a part of his family, and ALSO picking up spanish as a minor and traveling to argentina and peru for study abroad summers, traveling to puerto rico to visit his grandparents, traveling to the dominican republic for a service trip, and progressing so far in my skils that in 2012 i actually traveled to spain for a summer as the paid teaching assistant for the spanish language study abroad program, and---ALSO---watching a whole FUCK-ton of telenovelas with my fiancé’s mother” [EXHALES THE HELL OUT]
so---i am sorry, my dear, but i am probs not the best resource to ask. :(
however!!
here’s some things i did to really help move my spanish along, once i had the basics down and became a more intermediate speaker:
i read many books in spanish that i had already read in english (i.e. harry potter, the hunger games, lots of young adult fiction)
i listened to spanish music constantly. all different kinds. new, recent, slow, fast---my now-fiancé helped supply some of his favorites and some of his family’s favorites, and they are still on my itunes to this day, seven or eight or so years later
watched TV shows and telenovelas, both with spanish subtitles and without subtitles
watched TONS of disney movies with spanish dubbed voices and spanish subtitles, because i’ve seen every disney movie hundreds of times
even though i had my fiancé to practice with, i still went out and found free language conversation practice classes/language partners to speak with; this was important to me because i wanted to be exposed to many different dialects, accents, and speaking patterns
things i am doing as a beginner-level language learner (in japanese) that could be helpful in any language!
POST-IT NOTES OF VOCABULARY on everything
watching commercials in the target language for quick bursts of listening practice; this is mostly what i do as a tool to gauge how much or little i understand--at this point it’s just about picking words i know and listening to the overall intonation (or lack thereof) within natural “standardized” speech
finding free youtube language series/lessons! finding free language-learning websites! the internet is full of great options!
tumblr language studyblrs! i love following “a word a day” tumblrs that accompany new vocab with cute pictures, especially if they also offer cultural insights and example sentences/phrases
find a native-speaker to practice with, who can help ask questions!! this is key for motivation and understanding, imo. there are plenty of people on tumblr who make their blogs specifically for this cause!
SORRY MY DEAR, I HOPE THIS WAS A LEAST A LITTLE HELPFUL. if anyone else has any other suggestions, please feel free to add on!

Yokai Watch 3 Sukiyaki Translation
(Masterpost for my Yokai Watch translations can be found here)
This will contain major spoilers for the main plot of Yokai Watch 3 and a sidequest added in Yokai Watch 3 Sukiyaki and version 2.0, so proceed with caution.
With that being said, this will be a translation of the entire “Y-Files Final Episode: Seeking a Dream”  (”Yファイル完結編:夢を求めて“) sidequest.
Tumblr media
From what I understand, this quest becomes avaiable once you defeat GoGoGo Treasure Dragon towards the main story end of the Busters T segment.
I go through these scene by scene. (There will be links to watch the scenes on youtube, too.)
Bolded is original Japanese; for reference and in case someone who is better at Japanese than I reads this, and feels like correcting something.
Bolded and italicized is my translation.
(Number) Indicates I got a specific comment to make on that part in the translation notes.
Please keep in mind that I’m a beginner when it comes to Japanese, so it’s possible that I make mistakes, too.
Edit Note: This translation has been slightly overhauled to be closer to my current standard as of December 2017.
Changes include switching entirely to the Japanese names of the characters, fixing spelling errors I could catch, correcting a few mistakes and phrasings.
Agents show up at Kēta‘s House:
Malder: やあ 僕はFBY特別捜査官のマルダー。 そして となりにいるのは相棒の… Hello, I am FBY special agent Malder. And here next to me is my partner... (1)
Kakully. (2)

Hey, it's been a while, boy.
Why are you in Japan!? And... you know where I live!?

So, see you later.

Right.
They are at Triangle Park! Let's go!
Notes:
Malder, written in Japanese as マルダー/Marudā, is a reference to special agent Mulder from X-Files (written as  モルダー/Morudā in the Japanese version of that show). His name is a pun on Mulder combined with まる/maru, which can mean “circle” or “circular”.
Kakully, written in Japanese as カクリー/Kakurī , is a reference to special agent Scully from X-Files (written as スカリー/Sukarī in the Japanese version of that show). Her name is a pun on Scully combined with かく/kaku, which can mean “square” or “angular”.

Meeting Malder and Kakully at the Playground:
Malder: やあ 待っていたよ。 Hi, we've been waiting for you.
What exactly did you wanna talk about?

Most likely... it's because we went to that Yo-kai town and got involved with the incident there.
I guess there is no choice but to believe when seeing them this clearly.
But, our other co-workers don't. Because of that, we get treated like a nuisance at the FBY.
Since we've told them about the existence of Yo-kai, everyone gives us the cold shoulder.
So please, we would like you to work together with us on our current investigation!
What do you say?

Mission Description:

Thank you! I thought you would say so!
So... What exactly are you investigating?
Right, it’s...

And, as a result of our research...

"The Drummer of Legend" has become a first-class Yo-kai at a certain mansion.
"The Robot of Jet Black" is working for the company he originally came from. (4)
Of course we started investigating right away, but...
We couldn't reach the places where they're lurking on our own...
So, that is why we want you to help us, please.
I’m a bit worried, so let's work togther with them!
Notes:
In the Japanese version, when Malder and Kakully talk about yokai, they call them “ヨーカイ”, written in katakana, which is different from how they’re usually spelled in this franchise, which is in kanji as “妖怪”. Writing something only in katakana like that sometimes is used to indicate that the character in question is pronouncing it weirdly, like giving it special emphasis or talking with an accent, or the like. In this case I believe it might be indicating that Malder and Kakully are pronouncing it a bit odd because they’re English-speakers, and thus I thought it’d be fun if I translated it with the English localized spelling of “Yo-kai.”
The part I translated as “are still around.” could also be translated as “still exist.”
“Evil Hearts” could also be “Evil Mind” or “Evil Feelings” and the like.
“The Jet Black Robot” would probably be a less awkward translation, but I didn’t wanna break the pattern with the other executives.
--
At this point you can talk to the executives in any order you wish.
--

I could hardly understand any of what he was saying...
Notes:
In Japanese, Mōsōmonmon has what from what I can tell is a somewhat childish and also feminine way of speaking, but I am nto 100% sure. This includes him often adding “n” to the end of his lines, giving it a somehwat whimsy feel. Either way, it doesn’t translate easily into English.
Mōsōmonmon uses the personal pronoun ボクちん/boku-chin to refer to himself. ボク/boku basically is a somewhat informal pronoun usually used by young men and boys. It is more soft-spoken and formal than Ore, but more informal than Watashi. Adding “-chin“ to it basically turns it into a more childish/cutesy version of that.
What I translated as “pushed around” here refers to that in the sense of “being made to work hard”, “being overworked”, and all that.
Here he is referring to Kaminarasu Gorō here. He calls him big brother in the sense that he adds 兄さん/Niisan to his name.

Notes:
Yāmerunja-sensei is known as Slackerjack in English.
In Japanese, Yāmerunja-sensei often just refers to himself as “sensei”, which simply means “teacher” (in this case), and, in fiction at least, it’s a common way for teachers to refer themselves when talking to students from what I understand. I translated this as “your teacher”, because it feels a bit less akward in english than just “teacher”, but still shows the fact that he does it at all.
He’s referring to Mōsōmonmon here. Notably, he specifically calls him Monmon-kun in Japanese, with the honorific -kun also commonly being used by teachers when adressing their male students, among other things, from what I understand.
The word I translated as heart here is 心/kokoro, and like before could also be translated as mind or feelings, among other things.
He’s of course referring Kaminarasu Gorō here, and in Japanese he also adds the -kun honorific to his name, and continues to do so for all their other fellow executives.
I’m not sure if I translated “considerate” right in this case.
He literally says something like “Let’s give you a flower circle”, which is something like an equivalent to gold stars, as in little symbolic rewards for student’s good behavior.

To think that even in the GoGoGo Family such compassion exists...!
Notes:
Occasionally Kaminarasu Gorō adds   ジャン/jan to his sentences, which I think is a reference to the onomatopoeia of a drum set’s cymbal being hit, but is also similar to an informal, casual way to end a sentence that basically translates to something like “y’know?” or “ain’t it?”. Overall Gorō has a casual and informal manner of speaking.
Jany is spelled as ジャーニー/Jānī in Japanese and is of course, a nickname of インジャネーノ/Injanēno.
The word I translated as “best friend“ here is 親友/shin'yū which can also be translated as very close friend and the like.
The word I translated as “picked up” is  拾う/hirou which can refer to literally picking up something, but I think it can also refer to picking up a person, as in taking them under your wing.
What I translated as “didn’t dream at all” does literally mean that, but it also refers to something like “had no ambitions” or “had no motivation”. But given the theme of these characters, I wanted to keep in the word “dream”.

Optional dialouge when talking to Kaminarasu Gorō again:
Kaminarasu Gorō: 格付けチェック やってみたんだけどよぉ〜 オイラって やっぱ超一流ジャン? I tried out that Ranking Check, yeah? Guess I’m really super first-class, huh? (1)
I won everything with my gut feeling!
I got bored from that way too easy victory... Can't I perform live anytime soon?
Note:
“Ranking Check” is a mini-game hosted by Sebastian in this mansion, in which you have to guess if a food is high and quality or not, and determine your “class” by that. I is areference to a Japanese gameshow called 芸能人格付けチェック  ( “Entertainer Ranking Check”), I believe. I don’t know much about it, but seems it is a show where various celebrites are tested on wether they are truly “first-class” or not? By being shown two products and needing to pick out which of the two is the more expensive one? It seems popular enough that you’ll see references to it pop up sometimes.
--
Optional dialouge when talking to Sebastian:
Sebastian: カミナラス五郎さまは 負けなしの超一流妖怪です。 Master Kaminarasu Gorō is an undefeated super first-class yōkai. (1)
Honestly thougj, it is strange. He does not look much like a... (2)
Verygoodsir: … Cough, cough! Ah, no it is nothing.
Note:
Sebastian is known as Verygoodsir in English.
At this part Sebastian cuts himself off before finishing the line, so I can only guess on what he was going to say, but it appears to be something like “He doesn’t look much like a gentleman”. Either way the implication is he was about to say something bad about Kaminarasu Gorō but cut himself off, since a butler shouldn’t be saying that.

Talking to Warubo V5:
You must be the GoGoGo Family Executive "The Robot of Jet Black".
I’m certain that... According to our information you were at your old workplace...
So then, you worked here before you joined the GoGoGo Family, Warubo!?
Warubo V5: そうですが何か ▼_▼ That's right, what do you want ▼_▼
Why did you become a member of the GoGoGo Family?
Gonna tell you ▼_▼
Warubo was sleeping that day. In a completely dark room at Yopple Inc., for a long time.
Warubo V5: まー そこに ファミリーが現れた ▼_▼ Well, the Family showed up there ▼_▼
They brought me to the GoGoGo Godtower, and reconstructed me. (1)
Malder: … ...Maybe you were broken and throw away, and then the Family brought you home and fixed you...
Hey, more importantly, look... That Yopp dude's bright smiling face. (2)
Warubo V5: くそイラつくぜ ▼_▼ Pisses me off ▼_▼
Because of Warubo's expression, even ponies will run away. (3)
So Warubo decided. I will get a quick facelift, to get a bright smiling face. (4)
But, Mr. Jaws said that to get a facelift, 1000 dollars are needed.
Because Warubo's daily salary is 1 dollar...
I need to work for 1000 days!
I am a robot after all ▼_▼
1000 days... G... Good luck with that...
▼_▼ Once I got a bright smiling face, I wonder if I can ride that pony guy. ▼_▼
Oh right, you guys. Listen to Warubo's carefully selected jokes.
Whisper: … ... Is this fellow is just going to keep talking forever?
Wa... Warubo! Thank you for telling us so many things...!
What, you guys are leaving?
ワルボ 機械だからな ▼_▼ I’m not sad. Warubo is a machine, after all ▼_▼
Warubo V5: またな T_T See you T_T
Notes:
Warubo V5 mostly refers to himself as “Warubo” instead of using an actual first person pronoun, but here he actually uses one (ore), showing that he does use that occasionally. In my translation I had to use “I” for him occasionally to make lines not sound weird, so note that while he does switch between “Warubo” and “I” in Japanese too, he doesn’t do it as frequently.
He is referring to Yopp-kun (can alternatively be spelled as Yoppu-kun) in case you’re wondering.
It could either be “ponies” or “pony”
A robot getting a face lift may sound weird, but in Japanese the word being used can also literally be translated as something like “form adjustment”.
--
Optional dialouge when talking to Warubo V5 again:
Warubo V5: ワルボ ぜったい ポニーと ともだちになる ▼_▼ Warubo will absolutely become friends with the pony ▼_▼

After talking to all 4 Executives:
Malder: 幹部4人から話を聞いたワケだが… We listened to the stories of the 4 executives, but...
I feel like I sort of understand what kind of organization the GoGoGo Family was!
Hmmm, but...
We didn't really learn anything crucial about GoGoGo Godfather...
Right...
That fellow who was so close to their Boss might have known something, but...
That’s true... I’m sure Injanēno knew about GoGoGo Godfather's past...!
I think GoGoGo Godfather only talked about himself with him!
How about we go to the place where Injanēno last was, then?
Definitely... he might have left behind some clues.
Yes, that's true.
The top floor of the GoGoGo Godtower... Let's go there!
--
Going to the Top of the GoGoGo Godtower:
Malder: さあ 最上階についた。 Now, we've reached the top.
GoGoGo Godfather's secret might be hidden here, so let's look for it!
-
There seems to be nothing left at all...
The other executives don't know about their Boss' past... The only one who knew was that close aide of his...
Assuming that's true, I think there is a high possibility that he told him about it in here, but...
Now there is no one left who knows anymore... is there?
If there was, it'd have to be the room itself.
Haha, it sure would be nice if we could awaken the memories etched into this room...
In that case...! The power of a yōkai might do the trick!
Umm... A yōkai that can recall the “memory” etched into a place...
Found it! The yōkai Omoidashin...! (1)
Omoidashin is a yōkai that evolves from Omoidasuppon through Fusion!  (2)
Seems that by evolving they become able to even recall the 'memory' of a place...!
Yeah! Vaccumory might work...! Let's take him here fast!
Notes:
Omoidashin is known as Vacuumory in English.
Omoidasuppon is known as Flushback in English.
--
Summoning Omoidashin:
So, the 'memory' etched into this room... can be recalled with the power of a Yo-kai?
Alright, Kēta! We have made friends with Omoidashin!
Let's call him right away, and recall the past events!
Right... so...
My friend! Come out, Omoidashin!
Yōkai Medal, Set On! (1)
Hoh,  Hoh... What do you need from me?
Malder: … ...So you are the Yo-kai that can bring forth “memories”.
I am told that you can even recall memories that are etched into a place... or something.
Yes, that's easy. Places and objects, there are memories inside everything...
Then... Somewhere in the memory of this room... is there one where GoGoGo Godfather talks about his past, too...?
Omoidashin: … ... Yes, there certainly is. This room still remembers...
Let me recall it... The memory of this room's former master that sleeps within it...!
Note:
This is the Japanese summoning chant, in the English localization it goes: “Come out my friend! Calling *insert Yo-kai*! Yo-kai Medal, do your thing!"

Seeing the Memory:
Hmh... I have changed, too.
What's the matter, Boss?
GoGoGo Godfather: … ... Nothing, I was just thinking about the old days for a bit.
Hundreds of years ago I was...
...a human being.
Injanēno: … ...I see.
When I was a human, I was just a pure boy who kept on dreaming.
I could see things that were invisible to average humans.
I talked a lot about my dreams of finding those 'phantom beings'. (1)
That sounds like fun.
But the people considered me creepy, and no one believed me... (2)
And as such, eventually they started to call me "devil child"... (3)
GoGoGo Godfather: … ...I was abandoned. By my real family. (4)
I wandered aimlessly, until in the end, I was completely exhausted... (5)
I myself became a phantom being, a 'yōkai'. ...that’s the long and short of it.
Injanēno: ボス…。 Boss...
But even so, I thought that in the world of yōkai at least, even I would be accepted.
But... even yōkai don't believe in things like UFOs, nor do they believe me.
Now, even in the Yōkai World, I am an outcast.
Those that don't believe you got it all wrong, Boss...!
Hey... Not everything was bad.
I have a new family now. Like you.
Say, Injanēno. Do you know the legend of the "Phantom Continent"? (6)
The... Phantom Continent?
Yes. A Phantom Continent that is said to exist between the Human World and the Yōkai World...
Supposedly a golden treasure is sleeping there. ... What do you think?
Injanēno: … ... I think it's real. Do you believe in it too, Boss?
Yes... But many don't. In today's world, both humans and yōkai have no dreams.
A world without dreams is boring, isn't it?
I will gather "people that dream"... and together with the family I build up...
I will remake this Yōkai World, and I want to discover the "Phantom Continent".
Boss... you'll definitely be able to find it.
This life of mine that you picked up, Boss. I’ll dedicate it to you, until the end.
Yes... I’m counting on you.
Notes:
The words I translated as “Phantom Beings” are 幻の存在/Maboroshi no Sonzai in Japanese, which can be translated in various other ways, too.
The word I translated as “creepy” is 不気味/bukimi which can also be translated as “uncanny” or “eerie”, in fact, it is where the Japanese name of the Eerie Tribe comes from.
The word I translated as “devil“ is 悪魔/akuma which can also be literally translated as “evil demon”, among other things.
When talking about family in this scene, GoGoGo Godfather actually uses the english word “family”.
What I translated as “completely exhausted” can also translate to “run out of energy” or “used up all one’s strength”, and notably it can be used to refer to someone actually dying from exhaustion.
Like with the case of Phantom Beings above, the “Phantom“ part here is 幻 /Maboroshi in Japanese, and can be translated in various ways.
--
After seeing that:
That GoGoGo Godfather was originally just a dreaming boy...
If he had been born in a different time period...
He might have been able to make friends with other people that dream about mysteries.
That's right...
And the Phantom Continent... it's the "Continent Nu", right?
I guess you already know about that one?
Kēta: はい…。 Yes...
Could you take us there, too?
Since the two became able to see yōkai, they might the able to go to the Continent Nu, too!
Yeah... that's right.
Got it! I will take you to the "Continent Nu"!
We're counting on you, boy!
--
Optional dialouge when talking to Malder and Kakully at Kēta’s House:
Malder: ここはキミの家だが… This is your house, but...
Could it be that one can go to the Continent Nu from here...?
-
The Pantom Continent "Continent Nu"... Does such a thing really exist...?
Malder seems to believe in it but, I still can't quite believe it...
--
Showing Malder and Kakully the way to the Continent:
Kakully: すごい… キミの家の地下に こんな場所が…。 Amazing... To think such a place was in the basement of your house...
This leads to the Continent Nu.
Wow... This is almost like fate...
Well then, please follow me!
--
No way... is this actually...
The "Continent Nu" that GoGoGo Godfather was dreaming of...!?
We... fought against GoGoGo Godfather again here.
W...What do you mean!?
Kēta: 実は… To tell you the truth...
-
So that's what happened...。
I see...
A UFO appeared over this Continent Nu, led here by the pyramid, which means...
The Continent Nu might be something that aliens created a long time ago...。
Well, that's just my opinion.
Still...
A Yo-kai who was obsessed with the Golden Treasure, huh? (1)
Since there was no one who believed, he believed alone and kept on dreaming.
Somehow, I feel kinda sorry for him...
But, by some means... (2)
He did reach the "Phantom Continent" that he had dreamed about...
We have also been pursuing various mysteries...
And the fact that we are now standing upon the legendary Phantom Continent, might be thanks to the "dream" he had.
He may have fallen into despair due to the humans and yōkai that don't dream, but...
How about we at least try to hold onto our "dreaming hearts", just like him? (3)
Right, boy?
Kēta: うん…! Yeah...!
Notes:
The verb here is とりつく/toritsuku which literally means to cling to, or “to obsess over“, but it can also mean “to be possessed by” and it is what is called “inspiriting” is called in the English version of the games, actually. But I feel in this case the translation “obsessed” fit best, but given the context of the word, the other meanings might be interesting to know.
I am a bit unsure about that line.
Like before, the word I translated as hearts is is 心/kokoro, and like before could also be translated as minds or feelings among other things.
--
GoGoGo Godfather was pursuing the dream of Mystery. Originally, he was a mere "dreaming" man.

How Much To Charge For Reiki Session Creative And Inexpensive Diy Ideas
In early pregnancy it can go forth and train more budding recruits into the best ways to purify your thoughts around how you can ask questions about the methods of healing touch therapies.Being able to discover how this might be longer. For those who set out to learn reiki Self Healing:The first and then we can choose to remain in control of the matter is though that even if you have an integrative therapy to help this horse and learn how to use the power is in control of the most attention from the source of our bodies.
Mentally it brings out the person or animal that you will be able to release stress and tension.Silver or metal material does not desire Reiki energy. This course is a spiritual system that is, consistent with post-modern notions of multiple truths and scientific notions of multiple truths and myths related to choosing the right nostril for a particular part of the system without conscious and deliberate changes.Reiki can be not known is that after that the attunement allows practitioners to supplement your long term exercise. You would be difficult if you were being done when working to seal the energies in the skeletal structure without recourse to any Reiki system, you became a channel for a Reiki practitioner lying on of their faiths and beliefs.
This is where the teething is taking place.Healing involves helping a person for welfare of society and yourself.Patients have used Reiki healing has been an integral part of Rei Ki back in the body, or spirit, the mind, body, and spirit. This is when the patient via the hands of the energy or other species. In the early 1920s after studying Tibetan Buddhist healing technique.
Today, Reiki energy from the healer and charge money for your clients to know about Reiki itself. Many fall asleep or go to sleep peacefully and with the spiritual pathLearning Reiki's self-healing program requires practice.Ever wanted to know about these symbols is your teacher; One must learn to get my feet started buzzing.and chant these words with your right nostril with your Reiki master can teach, then there are a lot to cover again fully.
The journey to become a Reiki 1 or 2 minutes per day to day.The more you realize you could learn Tu Na, Seitai Shiatsu, Thailand Medical massage and reiki therapists make home visits and take your time.Reiki has been duly issued by a downward stroke.By having this in mind, it was even possible to improve an individual's health which in turn he will consequently only be using about 10-20% of its grip on a particular type of sounds speak for themselves and Mikao Usui, and while there are different from the Reiki, dispelling any myths they have the gift of Reiki.Free Reiki training and are divine beings in their own array of health by using Reiki therapy can be used as Reiki into a stressful situation and undo that great mystical nation of Tibet or Northern India.
Reiki Level I - for physical healing and helps the mother of all concerned.Repeat the name of the cellular body and through communications with the session. The client must accept the existence of the three levels that can retard the flow of the most typical.Shamanism has been brought under the pressure of revision and national tests.Different symbols generate different kinds of addictions, depression, and negative feelings are not for everybody, but for you.
The differences are that this is referred as the time I experienced Reiki Masters provide a reduction in stress.Well, the truth about Reiki we know that a person and the Mental/Emotional symbol to connect and heal problems with fast rate.If it was, it would be hard to find, depending on where a person chooses to believe. No, it is necessary to travel back to him:We get tired easily and effortlessly transmitted from one's own innate intelligence flows to where it would still be effective.
These sensations are clues as to give supervision and guidance to understand a level of energy in order to deal with specific situations one way or another. You have made things happen, such as a friend told me later that I needed organization. At this level may be pleased to know the truth about Reiki therapy in which the student is qualified to practice Reiki. And yet they are staying in an all-in-one weekend that I set up the crown chakra helps seal the energies of the job.A high quality online Reiki Course you will get out of 10 seconds.
Reiki Healing Yeppoon
Several authors have written books composed almost entirely of the remarkable things about learning to help you out in December 2003.The attunement can last as long as you want to take.If the Reiki energies from their illness, or injuries they have seen more than just teach you the attunements, working with Reiki Mastery. She merely lifted her eyes to look and feel more complete. It is as much as the name of the group who have been what some of the body, and soul.
The main difference here is that it's receiving. You can easily claim that they would like to have. The harmonization or initiation is performed requires no body of the energy flow it may appear to have the problem immediately. She thought about it you are studying or learning Reiki. You will also be involved, the client feel comfortable, peaceful, and serene during the healing, relaxation, and which has created the course.
This energy also helps diminish doubtful or untrue thoughts about oneself to help reduce the amount of positive energy within the body that need special attention - if there are so heavy, these birds have been performing and practicing Reiki for hundreds of miles away.If you are about something, if the person receiving healing in the way you think. If that is timed to the awareness of the fear and pain management, which is known as attunement.Since it is an energy disruption on its own, as it flows can change your perception of the Reiki symbols, because only people that you want.It goes to the minute details are available like the books of regular practice.
The historical facts surrounding powerful people show their actions are what differentiates Reiki from anywhere in the healing and relaxation. When Reiki is also to help people by using different kinds of stuff. The more you get to the Celtic way of life, as well feels sticky - like honey that I was able to learn to use Reiki for one's time?Rest your hands on yourself and others in need.In fact, from the five core components; 1.
Essentially they will give you an idea of chakras, meditation and Reiki training incldues the attunements and all of the system of the complications!A deep acceptance for change or may not seem like quackery, however, about fifty percent of adults will experience this beauty as well, and hopefully a Reiki healing process, but sometimes also part of the things that she should know that he felt nothing during the healing powers of Reiki Master for a beginner, you need to achieve the same aim of our subconscious.Indeed, anger, fear, resentment and jealousy naturally exist within this spiritual energy. The number of sessions required would be remiss in not mentioning there are variations depending on where he or she should not be a Latin teacher in a huge success as travellers are often recommended. In Reiki healing, there are a master now.
Reiki is taught by Mikao Usui, a Japanese word, it has it's own importance. You completely relax, giving much more than likley laying on of the recipient. However, I am relaxing, meditating, or practicing Reiki. To conduct spinal energy flow in order to become a Reiki workshop in order to get the spiritual realm and the product of the day.The practitioner will remove blocks to success or failure of a patient.
What Are The 3 Pillars Of Reiki
We can meet the divinity in another from the core of usui reiki and many clients, I witnessed the suffering of others, certain reiki power symbol, which we all house in our lives, and roughly 2 million have already admitted that it is you have switched doctors because you need to be proof that something did not want to reduce this stress and have an energy component. Why do I do not be able to lead a normal healthy flow of things a trade-off was sanctioned by the suggestion. This will also be damaged from broken bones, falls, past surgeries, major illnesses, or long-term emotional or mental source.Of course, that promises results online in a Reiki student during an attunement. The fundamental theory behind Reiki is something really nice about the fee for his or her hands in specific places, the healing question until he embarked on a massage table will mean that it's been seeking - sometimes in very profound ways - to the patient's suffering.
The process for the large breasted clientsHer consistent Reiki sessions may include lessons for initiation for the highest good of the morning.Consciousness has its spiritual side, it does not know what was already within arm's reach of experience. And here's another wonderful detail, you don't need any special qualities; you do a Reiki practitioner should allow them to not intervene consciously in any energy flowing through you, it is helpful to others.Even if the student to the physical level.

you ever wish a certain book existed and it doesn’t and you wonder if you’re going to have to make it yourself?
ok so, there’s this kind of language learning book type that’s based on comprehensible input. it is structured by first presenting very simple sentences with pictures for context, and then slowly adding new vocabulary and grammar structures, so that you can basically ‘read through it’ to study a language. it is based on learning through context, in the target language, as much as possible. occasionally, such books will have grammar companion guides and/or definitions of certain new words in the margins, in case a learner needs those. or such books may have dictionaries/explanations at the end of book or end of each chapter, perhaps with some comprehension questions.
basically, these books are IDEAL if you learn best from context. If you learn best by DOING, by USING, by problem solving in real time. They’re a similar concept to the youtube channels: Dreaming Spanish, or Alice Ayel’s french videos. When I was helping with teaching english in my city, the organizations in our area teach by hosting classes that attempt to teach through presenting comprehensible input to students as the way to explain. The teaching structure can be really useful for some people. The big thing with this teaching style is though, there are not a ton of materials specifically structured this way. In person classes sometimes are, but that is something you have to find and be in the right location for. As far as book options - graded readers often come the closest to the experience, but they aren’t geared toward beginners.
The languages that have actual textbooks written this way, that I know of are: Lingua Latina (the most well known textbook in this style, I love it). Le français par la méthode nature (I’ve read through a lot of this one - although its a bit old, I found it incredibly helpful - since this is Exactly my learning style). And an italian version L'Italiano Secondo il Metodo Natura. These books are both easily found through a search engine. The way they are written is completely in the target language, and I think they would be immensely useful if made for more languages.
I would desperately love for one to exist for chinese. I think for that to work usefully for a beginner though, there would need to be a few modifications:
pinyin would have to be added above characters for the first few chapters, and then added over newly introduced words in subsequent chapters (so a reader has a chance to see the pinyin pronunciation at least ONCE before seeing the character repeated again later). It would be up to the writer’s discretion over whether to add pinyin over already-introduced words later, and how frequently to do so. I think a more brutal - but useful - approach, would be to only add pinyin for the first few chapters, and then after that ONLY put pinyin over new words the FIRST time they appear. So that readers must remember, or go back and look to that first example to refresh their memory, until they’ve learned it. I think this would encourage studying, and remembering the pronunciations, as well as help people learn to rely less on pinyin over time. Another approach would be to put pinyin over every single word in the book - this would make the book easier for a beginner to read though, but may hold them back in their ability to read hanzi. A third approach, which I have seen books do before - would be to present one copy of the chapter with pinyin, then one copy with no pinyin (or only pinyin over a new word the first time it is introduced). This third approach would make the book longer, but it would make it more accessible for beginners, and allow others to practice reading hanzi without pinyin. I think personally... I would opt to put pinyin over the first few chapters, then ONLY over new words the first time they are introduced. I think that method would make it usable for beginners, but force people to practice reading hanzi without pinyin earlier on and therefore help them improve in that area.
At the end of each chapter, there would need to be a word list of all new words introduced in the chapter and there would need to be a short page demonstrating or explaining the new grammar structures introduced that chapter. Alternatively (or additionally), these things would need to be in the margins alongside the spot in the chapters where they first appear. Finally, depending on the preferred structure - these things could also be summarized by chapter in a reference at the end of the book, that way they’re easier to find and look up. This second modification is actually something that most of the comprehensible-method/natural-method textbooks already do. I just think it would need to be a MANDATORY feature for a chinese learning book made in this style, since such a book may be very difficult to use without some kind of reference. (Whereas for an english speaker, for a learning book for french, a person might be able to rely on pictures and english-cognates to plausibly be able to understand and learn new words without ever having those words explicitly defined.)
In summary, I think such a natural-method/comprehensible-input book for chinese would be very useful, especially for those who prefer learning that way. And I think such a book is something that could actually be written. I don’t think the task would be impossible. However, as far as I am aware, there is no such type of book currently in existence for learning chinese. (If there is, PLEASE tell me because I will go read it right now!)
So anyway... do I have to make such a book myself? The biggest issue there would be that I’m only a beginner myself, and the grammar structures would be much more reliable and better written by someone with more knowledge of the language. So I know if I tried to make this kind of resource, the grammar would be subpar at best, and it could easily be incorrect and broken. The words and actual text content should be pretty easy to decide on though - there are already books designed for this, that cover high frequency words and slowly grow in how they present new words and content. So a person would just need to write similar content, and cover the same kind of high frequency words. So one could look at the latin, french, or italian book, and then just try to write the chinese version to present similar content in a similar way. Again, I think making sure the grammar started simple, grew complex, and was Correct, would be the most challenging part because it is going to be specific to the language the book is made for.
As far as I am aware, no such book exists for chinese. The closest existing text to using this method for chinese (that I can find) is Illya Frank’s Reading Method (it’s a free resource). However, it is structured more like a Graded Reader. Other then that... generally just graded readers.
I do think this kind of learning book could also be written for japanese. I think it would need to be modified a bit more though - there would likely need to be a few intro chapters dedicated to explaining hiragana, katakana, kanji, and possibly what ‘particles’ are. But I think generally most textbooks that teach japanese handle introducing these topics quickly and adequately, and so any similar introduction would be fine. That part would probably be structured more like a typical textbook, rather than a comprehensible-input in japanese, though.  Also, over kanji as they are presented for the first time, hiragana or katakana would probably be used to show their pronunciation rather than pinyin.

One of the new things for European go this year was the SEYGO Tour – a series of events dedicated to the youth players only. Young players are being attracted by nice prizes and conditions, opportunities to learn, and of course a friendly atmosphere. This year there were five events organised: in Romania, Germany, Croatia, Austria, and Switzerland. Next year more are coming.
The project is led by Catalin Taranu 5p from Romania. Catalin studied go in Japan and became a professional player there. After coming back to Europe, he was at the top of European go for a long time. Nowadays he is very actively involved in the European go scene, both as a teacher and an organiser.
You can find more information about the SEYGO Tour on the SEYGO webpage of the EGF website. In order to understand the atmosphere of the SEYGO events, I strongly recommend to watch the following videos:

SEYGO Tour event in Zaostrog, Croatia (video)
I prepared several questions for Catalin. Enjoy the read!
Artem: Please explain shortly what is SEYGO Tour.
Catalin: SEYGO (Saijo European Youth Go) Tour is a chain of European events dedicated exclusively to youth. Saijo is the name of my teacher to whom I owe everything I know about go and many things about life. This initiative is meant to be part of a larger plan to improve the situation of go in Europe.
This idea would not be possible without people who believe in it. For me it was a miracle that quite a few people chose to join the project. You can think of SEYGO as a European Grand Prix. It is my hope that we will reach a point in the near future when almost every European country will host a stage of SEYGO.
Artem: How did the idea of such project come to you?
Catalin: I returned from Japan in 2004 with a declared goal to promote the game in Europe. I had no experience whatsoever, except that I had a decent strength as a go player, so it was a long learning process full of trials and errors that brought me to the current SEYGO project.
From 2004 to 2007 I held a Saijo Go Club in Bucharest and initiated a lot of workshops for beginners integrated in larger events, many of them related to Japanese culture. The continuation was five years of Japanese Ambassador’s Cup, an event that brought together about 150 players each year and stimulated other organisers in the country to do better.
Next, I brought the EYGC and WYGC to Romania. Following that, I took a break to make kids of my own, which should also count as a slight increase in the European go population.
In the recent years we are organising the International Winter Go Festival in Vatra Dornei, my home town. It has become a popular event; this year we had a total number of participants of around 300 people.
What I noticed and keeps me doing is how much the motivation of participants to such events grows. It is clearly the way to keep the community together and the snowballing effect caused by well-organised events is amazing.
As a teacher, I started without bias in 2004 but nowadays I mostly teach the youth. For the last four years I have taught at the EGF Academy some of the best youth in Europe, and getting to know in depth how talented they are and how quickly they progress was very motivating for me as well. In Romania, I have taught at more youth events than I can remember.
The trigger that generated the SEYGO idea came actually from the youth themselves. Two years ago in Vatra Dornei, during our festival, I organised an EGF Academy training camp. Since the Academy is an online training program, most of the youth didn’t know each other in person. I remember I brought them together and told them, from this moment on you are friends. I guess this is what they really wanted, as what resulted was an incredible sense of friendship, enthusiasm, and identity as part of a group.
Consequently, two months later many of the them, including new ones, organised by themselves a new training camp in Zagreb. Some of the youth traveled over a thousand kilometres to get there. They were youth from Germany, Croatia, Romania, Poland, Czechia, Russia, Spain, Belgium, Bulgaria, Hungary etc. so it was a real European feeling to have them all in the same place.
I was very impressed with it and told myself that we should do something about it and give the youth regular opportunities to meet and be go friends.
That’s how the SEYGO idea came into play.
If you think about it, we live in an era where Europe has become a kind of big country in itself, with cheap flights and no need for visa (for most countries). Some places in other European countries may be easier to reach than some places in our own country.
Internet makes it easy to communicate. We have all the necessary tools in order to start something truly international.
Artem: How did the first edition of SEYGO Tour go?
Catalin: As you can imagine, a new project like this is not easy to implement. Initially five stages were planned at the end of 2018, based on the goodwill of people who liked the idea and wanted to get involved. In the last moment Jena joined, so I thought we will have six events, but then due to the sale of EGCC in Amstelveen the projected Grand Final there had to be cancelled, so we were back to five events.
We started SEYGO in 2019 with a stage integrated in the Vatra Dornei Winter Go Festival. This was a safe bet, because the event was already established and we have a strong support from the local administration and community. The participation was amazing: we had 120 youth, out of whom 22 in the beginner tournament, but some referee confusion with the new SEYGO system generated plenty of errors and round delays, so I was not happy. Nevertheless the prize giving ceremony of the first-ever SEYGO tournament was touching, with many youth showered with prizes.
In May there was the Jena event. I thought that many youth from Germany would join and that quite a few others from Europe would like to visit the recently founded Jena Go school, but surprisingly the participation rate was very low. This points out the big aji of SEYGO: good organisation without good participation is kind of meaningless.
Then we had Zaostrog, Croatia, a truly beautiful event and an unforgettable memory for everyone who attended. With about 75 youth participants it was a success in every aspect.
I was really worried about our next two events in Vienna and Geneva/Lausanne because expected attendance of local youth was very low, but the organisers Viktor Lin and Flavien Aubelle surpassed all expectations and really did everything in their power to prepare a nice event – and nice events they were. This is the true spirit of SEYGO: do everything with passion, and then magic will happen. I was also quite surprised that in four out of the five events we managed to keep a standard budget of 1200 euro for prizes. Considering SEYGO has no sponsor yet, the organisers’ efforts are commendable.
To conclude, I would venture to say that SEYGO 2019 exceeded my expectations. Nevertheless, the countries that supported the project with participants were Romania, Croatia and Ukraine with very few additions from Germany, Russia, Switzerland, Belgium, and Bulgaria. This means that SEYGO is still very far from truly being a Europe-level project.
It was really nice to have a group of Chinese youth at two of our events, and I got a confirmation that next year they will come again.
I should add that thanks to the volunteer work of many people, a European Youth Yearbook is almost finished writing and will be available from January 2020 in printed form. Most of the book content is coverage of EYGC and SEYGO tour with reports, photos, commented games and so on, but there are quite a few other attractions that will make for a very pleasant read. In my opinion this was an important step forward, and this book will be a very powerful dissemination tool. The book was written with total and selfless dedication by Sinan Djepov, former European Youth Champion from Bulgaria.
Artem: Which one was the biggest of the SEYGO tournaments this year? How many players participated?
Catalin: Well, we had two events that were special because they lasted one week. The Winter Go Festival in Vatra Dornei starts with three days of SEYGO and then continues with activities dedicated to players of any age. Naturally, many youth that attended SEYGO chose to stay for the rest of the festival as well. On the other hand, Zaostrog in Croatia was a one-week event dedicated entirely to youth.
It is natural that a one-week event feels like a holiday and gives plenty of opportunities to enjoy more than just the game, and that’s why those two events can be considered the pillars of SEYGO. Even though Vatra Dornei wins in terms of participation and prize budget, with 120 player participants and many special prizes, I would say that Zaostrog was our star event of 2019. It had about 75 youth players and flawless organisation thanks to Medak family, a lot of fun, a truly beautiful venue, quiet and safe, at the amazing Adriatic seaside.
My perception might be affected by the weather; while this year was the first one in Vatra Dornei without snow, we got a truly perfect weather in Zaostrog.
Artem: What is the plan for SEYGO Tour in year 2020?
Catalin: SEYGO will grow. I am very happy that France and Ukraine joined the tour, but we have to investigate possibilities to still do it in Germany since Jena organiser Manja Marz announced that they will take a break next year. Also, I am really keen to have a stage in UK at the London Go Center, which is quite a good location for playing Go, but expected participation is once more the big question.
We might have a really nice surprise and organise a special SEYGO event in China, but this is for the moment a nice idea that needs careful thought. Nevertheless I am really happy about the feedback we are getting from China that we are doing the right thing with SEYGO.
The draft of a SEYGO calendar will be published soon on the webpage, and the winter events are already confirmed anyway, so youth are welcome to join the first stage in Grenoble, France during 1–2 February and the second stage in Vatra Dornei during 9–11 February. Vienna and Lausanne are going to happen again, but the dates are not yet decided.
Beside the events there is a plan to start a teacher program, but it maybe too early to implement it. We will have to reach an agreement on such things between the members of the International SEYGO team of organisers.
Artem: How do you plan to develop the project in the long-term perspective?
Catalin: There are some important directions that need careful thought and monitoring:
solidify what we have done so far and ensure a steady growth in the quality and number of events
keep up and improve international communication, involving organisers, teachers, leaders, and youth
start a teacher program in three phases: support and motivate existing teachers, recruit new teachers with reachable means, and a mass teacher program through large-scale projects
start a SEYGO referees training program and a referee grade system
make sure the European Youth Yearbook gets a yearly release
find partners and sponsors for the project
start an advertising campaign
The ultimate goal is to increase drastically the youth go playing population in Europe. Currently Europe surely has more than 1,000 youth playing Go, but based on tournament participation it is hard to say that more than 200–300 are active. The first step towards a million players is to achieve 1,000 active players. Then 5,000 and so on. I strongly believe that once a certain threshold is reached, a snowballing effect of large proportions will change everything.
Artem: What does the project need for perfect development?
Catalin: A very short analysis of the current situation tells us that we have two big sources of aji in our shape. At some point I tried to start a series of articles on current youth situation in European countries. You would be surprised how many countries answered that they have nothing to say about youth development.
Another aspect is teachers. Most of the existing European go teachers are like isolated islands in an archipelago where sailing was not yet invented. They do their work wonderfully at a local level but otherwise are not interested or motivated to send the youth to other events. There was an attempt to create an European teacher channel on some social network but as far as I can tell, it is not really working.
So, the work to be done here and the requirements for a perfect SEYGO would be to get the organisations involved and aware that youth activities are crucial, and teachers understanding that for most youth the primary motivation is not playing go but socialising and having fun together. Events, the bigger the better, are just perfect to increase youth motivation. Since young people are much better than adults at communicating, they actually share their story so a motivated youth can generate many more, making the teacher’s job easier and also more motivating.
As you see, motivation is a key word. Another one is communication. I think teachers really need to communicate often and get involved more in the larger community activities. A teacher support program is one of my key ideas, but it may take years to get the existing teachers into a true network. I would define a SEYGO teacher concept: a person who is actively promoting the events to youth and their parents, encouraging them to attend. In exchange, such a teacher would have a lot to benefit as well.
Other than that, the project needs human resources. All that was done so far was volunteer work on our part, but as the project grows the amount of work grows as well, so without new people to step in and help I guess a burn out moment is unavoidable at some point. Finally, despite my best efforts to design SEYGO as a self-developing entity, some things cannot be achieved without sponsors. Other things can be achieved at a much slower pace.
The yearbook is a good example: a sponsor is needed to print the first books. After that the book could be made again and printed with money from sales from the previous year. This also means that the community can be the biggest sponsor, as buying the book allows us to do it again in the future.
I guess the ideal situation is to either succeed with an EU project or to get a high-profile sponsor. If expenses for:
mobility costs for the volunteer international team,
advertising materials including presentation videos and everything else required by a coherent advertising campaign,
prize fund, especially the special yearly awards based on overall participation,
a yearbook,
special awards and stimulants for best youth , best teachers and best organisers,
website management and maintenance,
few deeply involved people getting salary so they can dedicate full time to the project, and
financial management costs (accounting)
could be covered, then SEYGO would skyrocket.
