Food & Drink
[With the advent of ‘grande quad one pump nonfat no whip upside down mocha Moob Knife special,’ I’m Copying/Pasting and reorganizing the System’s food and drink headcanons]
They all can cook simple things. Follow a recipe. Usually use shortcuts and boxed foods. The System is way too busy to cook most of the time. Groceries would rot unless they go shopping and cook the same day. They don’t keep kosher. They eat a lot of Middle Eastern, Chinese, Indian, and Latin American food. Practically live on street food, takeaway, [616] Nedda’s cooking, and Gena’s Diner. They’re all addicted to her pancakes. Frequent visitor to local Jewish deli when they get That Craving for homey food. Each have fallback/routine foods and set orders at places.
Marc swears his tastebuds died after living on hospital food and MREs. The System does not keep kosher; Marc specifically feels like he’s getting away with something whenever he has cheeseburgers (especially bacon cheeseburgers), pizza with meat on it, or shrimp. Give him crunchy and/or savory type foods. Doesn’t like ‘wet’ texture.
A New Yorker is gonna catch hands the next time Marc hears someone diss Chicago pizza. He’s as serious about Chicago and bagels as MCU!Jake is about Guatemala. Marc is also the only one who will eat tongue sandwiches.
Alcohol Brand: Not picky but would rather drink the local brands when they’re abroad. Pretty familiar with alcoholic brands in the Middle East, Northern Africa, and Latin America. Usual Rum, Whiskey and the like, Tequila, Vodka, Wine. Does not drink much after his previous alcohol issues but the bigger problem was the painkiller addiction.
Beer (whatever is there but partial to light lagers and the like since they’re usually in hot countries).
Coffee: Black. Unless it’s garbage. Then he loads it with enough sugar and and cream to make it Not Water. If they have access to an espresso machine or coffee shop, Marc will get an Americano with cream and sugar or quad shots with cream and flavoring (mocha usually but sometimes vanilla or hazelnut). Pure Unadulterated Space Time Cocanium Coffee.
Tea: Whatever’s there. Will microwave the water if the kettle isn’t convenient (cue yelling from literally everyone). Minimum steeping time. Enough cream and sweetener so it “Doesn’t have that tea taste.”
Juice: Saudi Champagne, Orange, Pomegranate Cherry, Grape
Soda: Hamdiyat (sort of Saudi Arabian Mountain Dew. Marc won’t ever touch Mountain Dew again. Hamdiyat > Mountain Dew), Coke, Cherry Coke
Steven is less adventurous (and drinks less) than the other two. Does not have Marc’s texture concerns.
MCU!Steven is vegan for kosher-ish reasons. In addition to neurodivergent ‘oh, I got too invested in my program and forgot to eat,’ he was too tired from the others doing Moon Knight things while he was sleeping so he didn’t trust himself to cook (or else he’d fall asleep and catch his place on fire). He likes helping Layla cook when they cook together. Doesn’t mind her having a meat meal while he doesn’t. At home, they’ll eat a vegan meal together. Rather than try to adopt British or American meals for vegan food, he’d get vegan recipes that are already out there in the world.
616!Steven has a housekeeper/cook and butler for most of his publication history so he’s the least likely to cook or clean. But if he has to pick up the mess, he will. He does enjoy having a neat home. He does not keep kosher or vegan. Has more of a refined palette than MCU!Steven or the rest of the System. Splurges on meals out. Upcharge King! Always polite to staff. Thinks Jake eats too many eggs and steak so compensates with chicken or turkey-based breakfast meats at home. Or granola, oatmeal, etc. Food has to be plated nice. “We eat with our eyes.” Visits the local Jewish deli and take in bagels and/or Delicious Fucking Baked Goods to work on Fridays.
Most American soft drinks are too sweet for Steven. Give him flavored sparkling water or seltzers.
Despite his thing against soda, he likes sweet cocktails rather than drinking straight from the bottle.
Won’t say no to a pint or gin and tonic.
616!Steven is an Old Fashioned kind of guy.

Gena’s Diner has a mix of American and Caribbean fare. But he always seems to be getting steak and eggs. Saves jerk chicken or oxtail stew for when he’s feeling a certain way. Brings home pie or cookies.
MCU!Jake is pretty particular for Guatemalan-specific drinks (and food). In New York, he’s like “Can we get Quetzalteca?” Loves to cook for Layla. Treats her like a queen.

Wine suggestions for someone who only likes moscato?
First off, you're in a very large group, because a lot of people prefer sweeter wines! Now, the trick is how do we find whether you want actual sugary stuff or just fruitiness or ease of drinking. A lot of wine is trying and also growing to like things, much like when we're adventurous with food. And it's a fun journey to start!
So, I'll give you some suggestions. I'm assuming you're in the US but I'll try to make my instructions simpler.
Let's start off with sweet:
1. I always recommend Gewurztraminer because I think it's an incredibly interesting 'off-dry' wine (dry means lacking sugar). It's definitely not everyone's jam, but when I was learning to identify it my mentor brought out a can of preserved lychee, which seems to be a common way of describing it. Also the smell of caraway for some reason. It's not as "syrupy" as this when drunk, but I always call it the dole fruit cup of wines. This is likely the priciest option I'll recommend as it's in the upper 20s typically for a bottle. I'd either get it for a special meal (it's super good with spicy fair and people love putting it with SEAsian food) or perhaps just as a glass at bar/restaurant that serves wine to see if you like it before committing to a bottle.
2. Riesling! So, cheaper Rieslings (under 10) from Germany will tend to be sweeter but make sure they don't have 'trocken' written on the label as that means dry and we're not heading there yet. If they're pricier, look for things that say 'feinherb'. You might have luck with something labeled 'auslese' if they aren't also labeled trocken. For American Riesling, they're usually label if it's "off-dry" or "semi-sweet". If you're in a wine store they should be able to help you find this - and if you happen to be in a state in the US where wine is sold in the supermarket, they typically have someone in charge of that aisle.
3. Let's talk sparkling! If you're going fancy and going champagne (which is pretty much like a 'legal' term for wine made a specific way in a specific place in France) I'd suggest looking for things labeled "Extra Dry" (trust me, in the scale it's middle of the road) or "Sec" or "Demi-Sec". Avoid "Brut" or "Extra Brut" as this is the driest.
But if you're not getting champagne, what to look for?
Well, your beloved Moscato comes in sparkling! Look for Moscato Asti Spumante. Or just any sparkling labeled "demi-sec" will do you good.
4. That "demi-sec" word is going to be your bestfriend. If you're in a wine store (markets might not have this) look for "demi-sec" Vouvray. Again, one of the more pricier options.
5. Let's look at some reds and try to move beyond sweet. Zinfandel in the U.S. tends to be of the sweeter, plush variety but also has more heft than light sweet whites. I also recommend this - try dry lambrusco. It's gaining popularity and while it isn't sweet like the typical 'known' lambrusco, it's super fruity, often fizzy, and a perfect wine for a pizza day.
6. For easy drinking, look for vinho verde from Portugal. It's perfect for now and the white stuff is usually cheap af (under ten here in NYC and I've definitely seen some at 7 a bottle) and drinks like water. A good intro to light, crisp dry white wines.
7. Time for fruit-driven but dry wines once you work your way up into liking more stuff. Sometimes pinot noirs from California (and Oregon) have a 'cherry vanilla coke' thing going on. I like to call them Lana Del Rey wines. If you're in a wine store, ask a worker for a fruity and oaked new world Pinot Noir, these would be the terms that get you something like I described. For white wines, I'd experiment with trying California chardonnays that are oaked and Sauvignon Blancs. Both tend to be fruit-forward.
I hope that helped! Please let me know you tried out anything I suggested! I'd really get some Vinho Verde as summer is the perfect season for drinking them. But if you're sticking with sweet, off-dry or semi-sweet Rieslings might be nice.

Get To Know the Muse: Andrew Riley
Favorite things.
season: Summer. The heat of the sun on my bones, the lack of ball-shrinking cold that eats into said bones and grinds them under ice-teeth. It’s beer, ball-game, and bikini weather. You can cook outdoors and everything smells like coconut oil and peaches. Sun’s up from about 0600 to about 2200. I really enjoy taking two weeks off and charter up to the Vineyard, staying at the summer house. Take the boat out to Devil’s Bridge and go fishing for stripped bass and squid, black sea bas and fluke, deep jigging with diamond jigs. I don’t feel trolling or bouncing live eels is very sporting.
pie: Unpatriotic as it might sound, I love deep dish cherry with the crumb top. Paired with a homemade vanilla bean ice cream.
fruit: I like peaches. The soft blushed curve, the crisp bite, the way it runs juicy out of your mouth. Fresh picked off the tree. I like guava too, passion fruit but don’t tell my sister. She’ll gloat.
ice cream flavor: It’d be a toss up between English Tea Time which is black tea-infused vanilla with bits of shortbread in it, or maybe Cardamom black pepper, in a ginger-citrus base. I prefer cone to cup, and I’m not the kind that needs sprinkles, whipped cream, and stuff like that. Best cooking dip whether it’s dessert or dinner is to keep it simple.
breakfast food: I’ve always tried to make sure Beth got a decent breakfast, things like pancakes and waffles, eggs and hash browns, fresh fruit. The chow in the Air Force tended to reinforce that because out of all the branches, it was the best. So when our schedules mix, that’s what we have. And when I’ve got work, then it’s a pot of coffee, a couple antacid tabs, and maybe one of them eggy muffin things with the hockey puck ‘egg’, bacon and cheese.
alcoholic drink: Macallan 25 neat, three fingers.
soda flavor: Can’t go wrong with Coke, right?
scent: Like personally? I love the smell of gun oil and leather, engine grease and summer grass with a hint of whiskey. As a cologne? something crisp or woodsy. On a woman? Depending on her skin chemistry something like Ed Hardy’s For Women, Azzaro’s Wanted Girl, or Tresor. Okay I really like Tresor. Like press my face into the curve her neck or her décolletage and breathe it in without trying to lick at...…anyway.
flowers: I like sunflowers, dandelions, daisies. But like that’s not really my area of expertise. When I put a bouquet together for someone, I consider her likes, her personality and go from there.

12. How many siblings do you have?
One. But technically 1.5. I have a younger brother who I love v much he’s the bestest, and an older half brother who I have not spoken too since I was like 14. So I really only consider one.
22. Favourite food/drink?
Idk if I have a favourite food but I guess I’d say pizza bc it’s so versatile or chicken. I’m a big water drinker I love water but it’s probably atlas up between iced coffee or ice tea, esp if we having some fun flavours oh and lemonade from Wendy’s. I’m not big on carbonated drinks they’re too aggressive for me but I’ll make an exception for root beer, cherry or Vanilla Coke or creme soda.
27. Your goals
Uh,,, maybe get my MBA in Ireland. Get my pilots license, travel, be financially stable enough that I don’t need a job.
33. Languages you can speak?
English. Mostly. I used to speak French (Canadian) but then I had a bad head injury so i can’t anymore. I can also sort of understand when my dad is speaking polish but I can’t speak it myself.

black, nothing special, my mom got it from a dollar store for me bc my old one was literally falling apart but i refused to replace it
2. A food you never eat?
the only thing i can think of that i would probably not eat even if that meant it gets thrown away is steak, or any cut of red meat. i have a lot of trouble swallowing it for some reason. most other foods i hate i would still rather eat than waste them
3. Are you typically too warm or too cold?
theres no really comfortable temperature for me i think. im always either too warm or too cold. but since i spend most time in my bedroom which only gets sunlight for about 4 hours a day, im usually too cold
4. What were you doing 45 minutes ago?
painting with watercolours and listening to music

i avoid sweets so i dont really know the different breeds of candy bar

2. Name a food you never ever eat. I hate mayonnaise and white cream based sauces (like alfredo) so much it’s a borderline fear. I hate fish, brussels sprouts, and asparagus. I love passionfruit flavored things but I’ve never been able to bring myself to eat the real thing because it looks so fucking weird. It’s like alien fruit.
3. Are you typically too warm or too cold? My hands are always cold but the rest of my body is pretty normal.
4. What were you doing 45 minutes ago? Watching Paper Moon with my dad.
5. What is your favourite candy bar? I’m generally a sour candy fan, but I like Take-5, Twix, and Kit Kat bars.
6. Have you ever been to a professional sports game? Just Dodger games. I actually like baseball (mostly playing it), it just takes too fucking long. I watch rugby on tv occasionally.
7. What is the last thing you said out loud? Let me preface this with a story: When my parents were dating my dad tried to teach my mom a little German, and instead of saying “danke” my mom thought it would be funny to say “donkey” so it’s just been a longstanding thing in my family where instead of saying “thank you” we say “donkey.” So my dad just made me dinner and I said “Donkey, daddy.”

I also really like the circus animal cookie one you can get by the scoop from Rite Aid/ Thrifty, but I started making my own by adding crushed up animal cookies to cake batter ice cream and adding pink food coloring and a shit ton of rainbow sprinkles. It makes me so fucking happy.

27. What do you think of when you hear an Australian accent? Honestly, no offense, but I find Australian accents super fucking annoying, though not as annoying as South African English. Like, omfg I can’t stand it.
28. What’s your favorite soda? Cherry Coke or Hansen’s Pomegranate soda, which is getting harder to find.
29. Do you go in a fast food place or just hit the drive? Depends
30. What is your favourite number? 1017 because I’m a narcissist (my birthday), but also I have this thing where that number pops up a lot in my life.

32. Favourite cut of beef? I don’t really think about it. Probably just filet mignon.
33. Last song you listened to? New Order - Academic
34. Last book you read? Last one I finished was Waiting For the Punch by Marc Maron (I mostly read a lot of memoirs). I’m trying to read Deathless by Catherynne M. Valente, but it’s not really sucking me in unfortunately.
35. Favourite day of the week? I like the hope of a Friday night, knowing I’ve got 2 days to do something fun even though I’ll probably do nothing lol
36. Can you say the alphabet backwards? Probably but like who cares?
37. How do you like your coffee? Iced. I mostly like giant vanilla or pumpkin ice blends from Coffee Bean.
38. Favourite pair of shoes? Black chelsea block heel ankle boots. I’m also wearing my leopard slip on sneakers from H&M a lot. For my birthday this fall I’m planning on buying myself some over the knee boots and some Fluevog Cubist Cupcake boots (the witch boots of my dreams). I’m so excited.
39. The time you normally get up? Normally for work it’s 6:15am but these days more like 10am
40. What do you prefer, sunrise or sunsets? I’ve suddenly become a morning person the past few years.
41. How many blankets on your bed? 2 on top of a comforter.
42. Describe your kitchen plates. They're my grandma’s. Just white with turquoise polka dots around the edges.
43. Describe your kitchen at the moment? Uh..too small for the amount of people in the house. White, traditional cabinets with tan granite countertops and my grandma’s ugly lace curtains hanging on the window over the sink.
44. Do you have a favourite alcoholic drink? I rarely drink but I mix myself a Dirty Shirley sometimes.

46. What colour is your car? Grey
47. Can you change a tire? Yes
48. Your favourite state? California, bitch. I don’t think I can live anywhere else.

50. How did you get your biggest scar? I cracked my head open as a kid by falling backwards onto our coffee table while watching the cartoon version of Sleepy Hollow. Had to get staples in my head and everything.
