Headcanons due to being October/Spooky month: which Pikmin characters believe in ghosts?

Olimar: Totally believes in ghosts, and if he ever winds up dying on the job plans to haunt the daylights out of the company president.

Louie: Doesn't believe in ghosts because if they existed, he'd be super haunted from all the wildlife he's hunted and eaten by now.

Alph: Claims to not believe in ghosts but always leaves little trinkets and packages of fruit snacks around for any helper spirits aboard the Drake.

Brittany: Doesn't believe in ghosts, eats the fruit snacks she keeps finding on the Drake because she doesn't know their significance.

Charlie: Doesn't believe in ghosts, necessarily, but IS superstitious. Gets annoyed when he finds out about Brittany eating the fruit snacks.

Shepherd: Doesn't believe in ghosts, is too busy being scared of monsters - I mean what? Captains aren't scared of anything, ahahah...

Collin: Gets too much weird interference on the comms channel late at night to NOT believe in ghosts.

Russ: Believes in ghosts, but also thinks that most modern methods of ghost hunting are fake sensationalist garbage. Is basically Shane from Buzzfeed Unsolved/Ghost Files yelling at ghosts and demons to come and get him.

Dingo: Claims to not believe in ghosts but is always the first one to freak when the lights cut out unexpectedly. Is basically Ryan from Buzzfeed Unsolved/Ghost Files yelling at Russ to shut up before he gets possessed.

Yonny: Believes in supernatural phenomena that people mistake for ghosts, especially after learning about the Glow pikmin. Uses this to tease Dingo and Collin a lot.

Bernard: Believes in ghosts, but in that superstitious sailor type of way. Has good luck charms and little rituals he does to guarantee safe travels and protections before each flight.

Oatchi: Is a dog. Wonders why no one else seems to notice all the see-through people floating around.

its hard to answer because since he doesnt play popular games to avoid spoilers, we know that he probably doesnt play anything that the characters are from.. (smash obviously doesnt count cuz theres not a story to care about being spoiled for)

i know for a FACT (the little voice in my head told me) that kaido mains link and is a BIG zelda fan

the group probably all play together and all have mains that are like from their favorite game or something they like and saiki just ends up picking kirby because "hes pink like me."

its either that or the animal crossing default boy villager because "he looks the most normal" and also animal crossing is a game he might actually play

Why anyone would suggest Louie is boring is beyond me, yet I found someone like that recently. When I came to after blacking out from the strangeness of that notion, this 35-and-a-half minute monster of a video manifested in my projects folder. What a coincidence!

Probably the Last of my Thoughts

Pikmin 4 Spoilers

Actually, while I previously thought that Dingo either has special solo missions or that he collects things in 100% areas, I think some of his side dialogue actually implies that he might be a "free pass" for dandori challenges or that he might act as a helper in such levels. So what I'm thinking now is that if you keep failing the challenges, then he may offer to either clear them for a cost or he's an AI that gathers items on his own alongside you to make clearing the dandori challenges easier.

If that's the case, then I do hope there's still a great enough incentive to do them yourself. I support "easy-mode" accessibility options as long as there's still incentive to take the challenge on yourself. Either way, if this really is what he does, it seems like the game is going to value "completion" over "challenge" which is giving me Pikmin 3 vibes in a way I'm not certain about.

Also, I didn't realize until my latest run that you collect pieces of Shepherd's diary and logs from her predecessors. They're probably going to be the source of most of the lore, but since half of said lore is gonna be from her point of view, she may turn out to be a well-rounded character the same way Olimar was in the first and second game. Now I just wonder how many people besides me are going to care about it since she's not the player character.

I never really bonded to the Pikmin 3 leaders despite them having personalities, since their main goal (collect fruit) seemed so impersonal despite the urgency of their situation, and the comic relief moments never really landed for me. It's just not funny to me for Charlie to be the butt of every joke when he doesn't seem to really deserve it most of the time. Like, I get the set-up of having the great respected hero be kind of bumbling, but that only really works if you see them in their prime beforehand. So he just starts bumbling and disrespected and ends bumbling and disrespected.

It kinda felt like they were going the same route with Shepherd, with her apparently being an accomplished captain but only being found in compromising situations, but I think her diary is either gonna really help or hurt that. From extra dialogue from the rest of the rescue corps, they all seem to really respect her, and vice versa, and despite her current achievements, she, just like you and everybody else, have been thrust into a challenging situation that you're having to suddenly adapt to. There's probably even more riding on her, since she has a legacy to live up to, so I'm interested to see if that plays into her character at all.

I'll also say that I like hearing the extra dialogue about and from the other guys too. While they do seem like archetypes first, and characters second, the little bit of character I've already gotten has endeared me a little more to them than the aforementioned Pikmin 3 leaders. Maybe it's because their archetypes are already more "extreme" than, "nice plucky boy" and "bitch," so there's already more room to add subtle details about them in the side dialogue. For example, even Collin, who seems to be the generic "nice guy" like Alph, has a relatable backstory about working to fund his education. And there's Dingo, who despite going down Charlie's route of being the tough guy with fantasies of romance at the very least has a reason to have a crush on the captain where Charlie seemed to pursue Brittany just because girl.

I'm not saying any of this deep or innovative characterization, I'm just saying they're more likeable upfront than 3's leaders. It feels like they're actually a group that had some history together, vs. 3 where they were essentially strangers learning and failing to get along without any emotional payoff for that journey. Like, I can imagine these guys around a campfire and telling stories together into the night.

However, that's all on the side and isn't gonna make or break the game either way. You don't play Pikmin for the story or characters, you play Pikmin because the puzzle solving of trying to do everything as efficiently as possible is addictive. Pikmin has never been a social sim, so a good story/characters are just a bonus rather than a necessity. However, I also think that kid of thinking is part of why I find Pikmin 3 so unmemorable. Of course, the game being fun in itself is a great point, but if the game is too easy, and the characters aren't relatable, then I probably won't have any lasting memories of it.

But I'm pretty hopeful for this game.

I may have discovered the Pikmin character formula

If you’re over-analytical like me, you may have noticed this already, but there’s still some interesting things here. Ever since Pikmin 2, main series installments have had character trios (yes, even Pikmin 4), each of which follow an archetype.

The most obvious pattern is visual, and this pattern also carries a consistent archetype as well.

It’s in Pikmin 3 too, of course.

If the pattern wasn’t obvious in Pikmin 4, it should be now. “But the playable character is customizable!” Maaaybe it wasn’t always meant to be that way. But I’ll touch on that another day.

We’ve got a small, circular character, a long/triangular (triangle is obvious on Louie if anything) character, and a boxy character. It’s kinda an obvious pattern to most, but if you think that’s it, don’t worry; it runs deeper.

The circular character is iconic, in a literal sense. After all, Captain Olimar is the representative of the Pikmin franchise, apart from the Pikmin themselves and other recognizable critters. It’s obvious why, but it’s not just him. Alph gets a spot in Smash Bros just like Olimar does and gets the group together in 3. The default for our customizable character is just everywhere in marketing. Along with this, they tend to be helpful and act as the glue keeping the group together.

The long/triangular character tends to be on the impulsive side. Louie and Brittany’s place in this archetype is self-evident, especially due to how similar they are, but Captain Shepherd’s a bit more disconnected. They’ve domesticated the idea of a Louie-like character, so to speak, but the heart’s still there. Anxious (Freaks out big-time at any critter that’s not a dog) and dog-obsessed (She requested that Russ make a thousand dog treats in advance for normal training routines without a second thought), I think she qualifies for the archetype well enough.

The square character… generally has a theme of work. The President is, well… a president of a company. He’s the embodiment of work even if he isn’t working. Captain Charlie is very dedicated to being the captain, to say the least. Collin is always working, even if he doesn’t exactly want to - he’ll help at any time. Pretty simple.

Why have I been highlighting captain? Well, that’s because there’s now been a captain for each archetype, which I find interesting, especially since each one has had a captain by now…

Where will the Pikmin series take this formula next, I do wonder… :)
