Headcanon:

Percy definitely started working out a lot after the war. He never wanted to be caught unprepared again, and so he spent a lot of his time not only training his sword fighting, but also weightlifting. Part of this had to do with the fact that he wanted to be able to carry Annabeth no matter how weak he got. After Tartarus, everything he did was to prepare for a situation as bad as that one. He also started eating a lot more, which in turn led him to gaining more muscle mass. He was terrified of looking like the walking corpse he turned into when he was hidden by the death mist, so he bulked a shit ton of protein and fats. At first, Annabeth didn’t quite notice a difference, but by the end of their senior year, Percy was ripped. He looked godly, and it came to the point where Annabeth had to become territorial around other girls because he just looked that good. It definitely flipped a switch in her. Percy had always been good looking, and he’d always been charming. But ever since the summer he’s been overly protective and down right sexy. Even if he had started to tower over her, she could definitely get used to it.

I read PJO so long ago in middle school and since uni started I didn’t have the time or the heart to read anything other than web comics and my class materials and for 2 years my arts were put to dormant 😭 I tapped back into the fandoms in my last university year. I’m reading “The Lost Hero” right now, and I love how throughout the whole of the book Percy is just referred to as “Annabeth’s Boyfriend”. Not “Son of Poseidon”, not “child of the prophecy”, not “he defeated legions of Kronos’ armies and risked his life to save the world”- just “Annabeth’s Boyfriend”. It’s like the books themselves are celebrating that Percabeth happened.

And it’s great, because we know him as all those things, we’ve seen him be the hero with the sword and the destiny, but we waited five fucking books to hear him be referred to as “Annabeth’s Boyfriend”, so Uncle Rick is just showering us with “Percy Jackson: Annabeth’s Boyfriend” to make up for lost time.

Again they dangled Annabeth’s fatal flaw in front of her through Hephaestus saying that if she were to leave right then with the shield, she would win back her mother’s favor and be a hero, two things Annabeth has wanted more than anything in the world her whole life. And again she chooses to stick by her friend and protect him because if they don’t break the cycle, who will? If they continually sacrifice each other to get ahead, just as the gods have done with each other and demigods for centuries, what will be left but the destruction of the world?

But Percy isn’t that way. Annabeth has the chance to have everything she’s ever wanted but not the way she wants. She doesn’t want to be that way anymore. She’s breaking the cycle.
