You had made a pact after Emma,

One year. You were gonna wait at least one year before you'd grant her a sibling.

Now that promise... that promise hadn't exactly been kept. As it turns out, having a baby only made the both of you even more desperate for another one.

that's why when your daughter was only a few months old, with a simple "8 months is basically 12" murmured to your ear by your desperate husband, all promises went out the window.

And that's how only a month later, the pregnancy test came back positive.

You would have expected the second time to be less emotional, but god if you were wrong.

Pedro kissed you as long as he could, as long as his lungs allowed, while neverending tears of joy fell down your cheeks.

From then on Pedro had been just perfect, he had to take on a few more tasks with Emma, and he did so gladly, always with a smile on his face, always reminding you just how happy you were making him, just how you were making all his dreams come true, reminding you that he loved you more and more every day.

He was your biggest supporter, and not a day went by that he didn't make you fall in love with him all over again.

Today included. It was time for the first check-up, and you were terribly nervous.

Which meant he took his time calming you down, kissing you softly as he promised how "everything's gonna be alright" over and over again, until finally, you were in the gynecologist's office, lying on the table as the nurse performed the ultrasound.

All the while gripping Pedro's hand for dear life.

And it was then, when the nurse's movements on your belly stopped, when you watched her examine the screen more carefully, it was when she pulled away the device from your body completely, that your heart started beating out of your chest.

"what is it?" you asked, your voice trembling, already expecting the worst.

"I'm sorry, I'm not allowed to say, I'm gonna go call the doctor" the nurse, smiled, trying to be reassuring and failing miserably

"w-what do you mean you can't say? What is it? Is it bad?"

But all she could do was shake her head slightly, answering "I'll be right back, Let me go call the doctor"

The moment the door clicked behind her, the moment you were alone, tears started filling your eyes as your brain filled with images of all that was inevitably gonna happen.

"hey, hey, hey" Pedro cooed, noticing your reaction "it's ok"

"no it's not" you whimpered "There's something wrong"

"no there isn't" he promised, stroking your cheek "Nothing's wrong, I'm sure it's nothing, I'm sure she went to call the doctor so that he can tell us that we've got the most perfect baby in the word"

"Baby..." you murmured, melting into his touch "You know that's not true, I-I must have done something wrong- I-"

"don't you even think something like that sugar" he shook his head, crouching down to be at your level "You are the most amazing mother anyone could ask for, you did absolutely nothing wrong, I promise"

"I-I don't kno-"

But before you could finish the sentence, the doctor had entered, with the nurse right behind him.

"good morning, if you don't mind I would like to take a look myself"

And with a shy nod from your part, that cold instrument was on you again, while the tall, white-haired man looked attentively at the screen.

"yes" he murmured to himself "yes it seems so"

"w-what?" you couldn't stop yourself from asking, squeezing Pedro's hand tighter

"yeah, what?" he joined

"well" the man cleared his that, checking the monitor once again "the ecograph is picking up two heartbeats" 

Your heart sank, 

Your baby has two hearts? You haven't even seen that on greys anatomy

"W-what do you mean two heartbeats?"

A soft smile now ghosted his features as he saw the worry on your face "Oh sorry" he apologized "I meant to say that you're having twins"

And just like that, your heart was racing again, actually not racing, it was going as fast as the fucking speed of light.

Your hearing became muffled and your mouth fell open as you turned to your left, finding in Pedro's eyes all your surprise and excitement perfectly mirrored.

His eyes were glimmering, and his lips were turned into one of the biggest smiles you'd ever seen, the same one he had on the day he proposed, on your wedding day, the day that Emma was born, and now... now the day you found out you were gonna have two beautiful babies at once.

"w-we-" you stuttered, gripping his hand and forgetting all about the company you had in the room as you got lost in his eyes

Pictures you take of Pedro : Vacation edition

I don’t know why but I struggle to do these? Not like writing them, but with the pictures. Every time I put another pic, it just puts the same as the first one 😭

A week off from work and you were both gone to the beach, needing to feel the hot sun on your skin, and swim a little. You enjoyed to stay on the sand, tanning, while Pedro went to swim. At some point he came back and sat next to you. You were on your phone, reading some articles, often texting some of your friends.

“How do you even see the screen?” Pedro just said as he was watching you carefully, his gaze wandering on your body from time to time. You laughed.

“I-I absolutely do not struggle to read at all” you said sarcastically. “I was bored” you shifted to face him, still holding your phone.

“You should have joined me, the water’s good”

“And leaving our stuff alone?”

“Good thinking” you both laughed. Your eyes went back to your phone, but you both kept talking. You wanted to unlock your phone but instead you opened the camera, so you decided to take this picture.

You never went to Chile, and Pedro took things in hand and booked a flight for the both of you to go there for two weeks. And it was amazing, he showed you so many things. One time, as you were walking back from the beach, he noticed a stand where you could drink coconut water directly in the coconut. He took your hand and just walked there. He took two, and you both sat down next to the stand and started to drink. You took this picture, locking a memory for life. It was one of the greatest trip ever.

You went hiking one day as the weather wasn’t too hot. You traveled to your family for a week during spring, and, not going to lie, it was like you were lost in the middle of the forest. But you took advantage of this, and decided to hike. As you did, at some point, (don’t even know how), you ended to a lake.

“The water doesn’t seem to be that cold” Pedro said

“Wait- you want to go in?” You laughed “we didn’t even take bathing suits” he smirked at you

“Who said we need them? There’s no one around us”

“You naughty boy” he just took his clothes off and went it the water, just like that. You took your phone out and took a picture, already knowing how you could caption it : “I’m pretty sure the water is under ten degrees but he went anyway”.

“A little cold at the beginning but you get used to it. Come on!”

You touched the water with your hand and gasped.

“A LITTLE cold? Are you kidding? It’s freezing! You’re going to get sick!”

“It will only be worth it if you join me!” He said, giving you puppy eyes that he knows you won’t resist. And he was right. You sighed, anticipating the cold water and getting sick afterwards, but you took your clothes off and joined him.

“Oh my god- why!! It’s freezing” he laughed

“Come here” he took your hands to get you closer to him.

“I hate you”

“Sure” he smiled, and kissed you. You stayed very close to him so that his heat could warm you up, as you enjoyed the view, talking a little, and also being children and playing around. You both ended up being sick afterwards but you had a lot of fun. He was right, it was worth it.

After hiking for a few hours to the mountain hut where you were going to stay, you took a break to enjoy the view. The mountains around, the sun, the temperature was perfect. You really enjoyed being able to travel a lot with Pedro. You weren’t used to that and always regretted not traveling before, but it was worth the wait.

You were sitting on a bench, and Pedro was standing a little further in front of you, feeling the warmth on him. You were taking pictures of the mountains, but in the middle, you took this one. This trip was definitely going to be added to the best ones.

Joel Miller - Joel would really want to take care of you, but he would keep his distance. This man has seen the end of the friggin’ world for Christ’s sake, and all the gross shit that comes with it. If he had to take care of you, it would be behind a thick screen of plexiglass and passing your food and meds to you through a hatch. Whilst wearing a Haz-Mat suit. Joel is so done with infections. And mushrooms. No mushroom soup for you, only chicken and noodle.

Ezra - Ezra would probably give you space leaving you enough water and Bitz Bars in his tent for you to take care of yourself whilst he proffers more of his coveted loot, Birdie. Returning later to periodically paw at you when he needs his dressing changed or just wants some sweet Kevva loving. It won’t bother him that you’ve got Covid and are all sweaty, until he catches it from you and ends up becoming the worst. Patient. Ever.

Marcus Pike - Marcus would climb into bed with you and give you all the cuddles, hold you through the fever shakes. He’d make you fresh homemade soup. He’d bring you extra-fluffy pancakes in bed with fruit and syrup and feed them to you patiently. He’d hold your hair back if you got sick and would wash you down in the bath with extra bubbles and candles. Even if he got sick himself, Marcus would still want to care and make a fuss over you.

Max Phillips - Max is the only Pedro Boy who would be immune to catching Covid due to, you know, being dead... But still, he wouldn't want you coughing up gunk all over his fancy, new suit. So he’d send you home until you’re fit enough to return to work and be his personal blood bag again.

Oberyn Martell - Covid wasn’t around during Oberyn’s time, however he’s seen a lot of illness and being royalty doesn't have to, or want to, deal with it. You’re no good to him in this sickly state. So your Prince has no real use for you until you’re fit, healthy and supple again for him to have you spread eagle in his chambers.

Frankie Morales - Frankie would likely get sick with you; the man’s immunity is probably wrecked anyway due to the coke, so you’d both be laid up in bed together moaning and groaning, and not the good kind of moaning and groaning either. But you can bet once he starts feeling better, he’ll want some sweet medicine and he’ll find it between your legs, hermosa. And you can bet it'll make you feel miles better too.

Dave York - Dave has no patience for sickness or germs, which is ironic because he has two children who are in the prime ages for getting all sorts of sicky bugs. But then he’s not at home much so he never gets sick. And he can’t tolerate all that needy, whiny crap either. The most Dave would do is to deliver you some meds and Kleenex and leave them on your front door step. Begrudgingly, of course.

Marcus Moreno - Another caregiver, Marcus would literally stop saving the world to make sure you're okay. To drop off some hot Thai soup to make you sweat it out, to get your prescription filled for you, to fluff your pillows, to smooch you on the pasty head. You name it. Anything you need, Marcus will be your hero, baby.

Javier Peña - Javier doesn’t do sickness. Period. He’s out catching a drug lord, you think he has time to tend to you, cariño? The man doesn’t have time to eat, let alone make sure you do. You’re on your own. You’ll only see Javier when you’re fully recovered and he’s skulking in at 2am ready to give you a fever of another kind…

Javi G - Javi G would take care of you and give you everything you could need and want when you're ill, but probably to the point it would become a little unbearable. You’d force yourself well just to get out of the Paddington movie marathon he puts on for the sixty-seventh time.

Dieter Bravo - Dieter is probably the most over dramatic and tiresome patient when he is sick, and he really can’t deal with you being ill and not able to take care of him. Agent Whiskey - Known to get things done (as long as there isn’t a meat grinder around), Whiskey will want you ship shape and in good health as quick as possible, so he’ll tend to you, feed you, wipe up all the mucus and whip you back into shape quicker than a tornado in a trailer park, sugar. Whiskey wants you fit and well, it's the only way you'll be able to keep up with this handsome cowboy after all.

Silva - Tending to you gently, Silva will have you laid up in his bed all comfy, dabbing at your skin with a cool cloth whilst he tells you stories of a dreamy ranch life. He’ll watch you sleep in his rocker at the end of the bed, spoon feed you soup and run you a bath whenever you need, and will join you in it.

Din Djarin - Din would want you better, and so would The Kid. To the point that The Kid would just Jedi Mind Trick those Covidy germs right outta your system so you can carry on collecting those bounties with your tin can man. This is the germ-free way, Mesh'la.

Pero Tovar - Another hypochondriac when he gets unwell, Pero would be useless in taking care of you when you're sick. He’d grumble all the way through it and ultimately end up sick himself, resulting in you taking care of him whilst you’re still riddled with the ‘rona.

Pedro's manager Nicole had texted you about an opportunity to prank him big time. You immediately accepted.

You and Pedro had this ongoing series of pranks that you two've kept going over the past two years. At first, it started off small. Innocent pranks here and there. Then about six months in, it progressed to bigger pranks, such as hacking each other's social medias and posting the most absurd things, to even pulling pranks on the red carpet, which is how he got you last time.

It had been a couple of months since his prank to you, and you were trying to think of something real good that would stump him, but nothing came about... until now.

Pedro had an interview with Cosmopolitan, and you were so proud of him landing an interview with a renowned magazine. It wasn't until later that same day that Nicole reached out to you, clearly aware of the prank war that played on between you and Pedro, and you seized the opportunity immediately.

"So, this is how it's gonna work," The producer of the interview gestured for you to stand next to him. "You're going to be in this room with one of our executives, Jessica, to watch the interview through this laptop screen,” He motions to the laptop in front of the both of you, “and you’ll basically be able to hear and see everything that’s going on. The interviewer, Sarah, will have a tiny earpiece in her ear where she can hear you say anything you’d like her to say or ask Pedro. You’ll get to see it all unfold in live time.”

You couldn’t help but feel so giddy about this. This was going to be so much fun.

“I’ll be in here the whole time to help, too.” Nicole stepped in, and you laughed.

“He’ll never see it coming. Thank you for letting me do this, Nicole.” You grin at her and she laughs, finding your antics with Pedro so childish but insanely funny.

“Interview starts in five! Jessica will let you know when to start.” The producer informs you before walking out.

You settled onto the couch into the room as Jessica got everything set up and ready to go. You see Sarah walk into the frame a couple of minutes later, doing a mic test to make sure she can hear you. When the producer gives her the go-ahead, Pedro appears in the frame to take his seat.

"We all set? Alright, let's start rolling." You hear the producer say, and Sarah starts the interview.

"Hello everyone, I'm Sarah Vasquez here at Cosmopolitan, with a very special guest today- Pedro Pascal! How are you, Pedro?"

He smiles kindly at her and folds his hands onto his lap, "I'm great Sarah, how are you?" His full undivided attention is on her, completely unaware of what was about to happen. Poor man.

"I'm great, thank you. So tell me Pedro, how are you handling all of this newfound attention? Do you like it?"

"I do, actually, though it can get wild at times. I appreciate how hard my supporters go for me. Makes me feel loved.”

You snickered as you talked lowly into the microphone that Sarah could hear you from, “Ask him if he liked when one of his ‘supporters’ asked if they could have his babies.”

“Word around the street is that one of your supporters came up to you and asked you if they could have your children. How do you feel about that?” Sarah asked Pedro, trying hard to stifle a laugh.

Pedro’s eyebrows furrow immediately, “How the hell do you know about that?” He laughs in confusion, because he’d been alone when the incident happened and you were the only person he told about it. You couldn’t stop laughing and teasing him about it for the next couple of days.

“We have our sources.” Sarah smiled kindly, which made Pedro huff out a laugh.

Nicole grabbed the microphone from you, wanting to get in on the whole bit. “Ask him why he wanted to have a sing-off with Bella while he was tipsy at the Oscars.” You all laughed at that, knowing that was a very Pedro thing to do.

“So what about the sing-off you tipsily challenged your co-star Bella Ramsey to? Who won?” Sarah asked, and Pedro looked at her with such apprehension.

“Okay, is Nardwuar here with us or something? How do you know about these things? This is getting weird,” Pedro laughed nervously, and cleared his throat, “And for the record, I obviously won.” You could tell he was trying to laugh off his nervousness, which was one of his defense mechanisms you were all-too familiar with.

“Like I said, we have our sources.” Sarah tried her best to collect herself while Pedro was internally freaking out from across her.

Pedro scoffed in disbelief, “Sure. Right.”

Sarah just grinned as you laughed with Nicole, almost feeling bad for Pedro.

“Okay last thing,” You start, “Ask him why he chose to wear the green striped underwear today instead of the cute dinosaur ones his bestie bought him.” You cackle, and Sarah bit her lip once more.

“So Pedro, you’re wearing your green striped underwear today. Why aren’t you wearing the dinosaur ones your bestie bought for you?” Sarah couldn’t hold in her laugh anymore as all expression from his face completely drops.

“Okay, yeah, you’ve been lovely but I think it’s time for me to go now.” He gets up from his seat and you laugh as you get up and head out to the set.

“Tell her why, Pedro!” You chided him, and his eyes meet yours in shock.

“What the hell are you doing here?” His eyebrows furrow in deep confusion, causing you to double over in laughter.

“I got you so good. Should’ve seen the look on your face, Pascal.” Tears were pricking at the corners of your eyes from laughing so harshly.

He gently punches your shoulder, “You sneak! You were about to give me a heart attack!”

“I’m the prank champion!” You gloated, and he rolled his eyes.

“Nah, not even close. Wait ‘til you see what I have up my sleeve for you,” He slings his arm around your shoulder as he laughs, feeling embarrassed about the whole thing, “I will admit though, you did get me pretty damn good. Kudos to you.”

You beam up at him with a smile and he rolls his eyes. He was most definitely faking the fact that he had a good prank up his sleeve to pull on you, but that meant he had to meticulously plan something good…

So good, that it’ll reign him the king of pranks.

What a good question!

So Joel has an iPhone, BUT only because of Sarah. In this universe, Sarah is old enough to be working at Miller Construction Group and is married with children. She sends him videos and photos of his grandchildren and convinced him - it took her a LOT of convincing - that having an iPhone would make it easier for everyone, since she can send everyone in the Miller family group chat the photos at the same time.

Joel is not happy about this, because he has an iPad. Why in the hell would he need an iPhone? Like Pedro, Joel LOVES his iPad.

So he has the pro max because his fingers are too big and needs as much keyboard real estate he can get to text. Random lore dump!!!

Okay, I am not sure how many time I have mentioned that my standing headcanon is that Delfi and Pedro are the first of the Roller Crew couples to have kids. Their daughter, Victoria is born in the year 2027.

So, I believe that Nico came back about a year after S3 because New York and him and Ada didn't work out and Roller Band is formed back up once more and with the help of Matteo they get their own label and full-on career and have a successful five years.

They probably became popular in Latin America mostly while Matteo ended up being a much bigger name in Europe than in the American continents. Also none of them get like this superstar success. They probably have the same amount of success as Meghan Trainor or Rachel Platten.

I think the Roller Band (if they are still called that, because who can succeed with that name) retire from the active tour life once Victoria is born because obviously, Pedro wants to be there for his daughter and wife and Simon probably starts looking to settle down as well with Ambar and start a family as well down the line (Simbar are the last to have children because Ambar needs therapy first). Nico is the bachelor of the group for a long time. They still create music and do local gigs in BA, but no more big international tours.

Delfi and Pedro go on to have four kids in total, Lucas born three years later, William after another three years, and Olivia two years after that. I just get the vibe from them that they have this amount of kids. Honestly, I kind of regret that I made they get engaged last in my timeline (Even when they do beat Lutteo to the wedding), but we can just say that it took Pedro that long because he kept freaking out and changing the plan how he was going to do it, otherwise he would have proposed before Gastón... who did prolong asking Nina about two years because he wanted to let her finish her degree first.

Simon and Ambar's first daughter Ivory is born in 2032 and her sister Esme comes about two years later.

Roller Band probably formally retires when the guys are in their late 40s or early 50s and kids start to be teenagers. Simon still occasionally releases solo music plus gets really involved with the management of young artists and advocates their rights so no one will go through the same as he did with Bruno and Vidia. Pedro starts getting more into score composing, working with Delfi as she produces and directs features to big and small screens. I have no idea what Nico would do...

Then all grow old with their loved ones and friends.

Triple Frontier (2019)

Character: Francisco ‘Catfish’ Morales

Favorite Quote: “Does he have kids living in here with him? Cause that’s gonna make things a whole lot more complicated, and is not what I signed up for.”

Oof, gonna be right up front…I was not a fan of this movie. The film starting out with Metallica’s “For Whom the Bell Tolls” had me checking the credits suspiciously and I was absolutely correct: Triple Frontier was written, directed and produced by men, for men. But regardless, the premise of the film is five ex-military men decide to do a ‘last hurrah’ rouge mission to kill a prominent crime boss in South America. And then pocket his hidden millions for themselves. Because their warriors and deserve it (insert face palm)

Pedro’s character was the only redeemable guy of the five, and is this a surprise? No, sir. One of his first lines is admitting to having a baby on the way. And actually looking like he knows they shouldn't be doing their stupid mission. I couldn’t help but laugh. Pedro can’t stay away from dad roles if he tried. (just gonna go and count this as dad role #4) Which is only furthered during a reconnaissance scene, when Fish (as he’s lovingly referred to) spots the crime boss’ children and quickly says ‘nuh uh’ to harming them. It’s one of the few times someone on the team shows an actual conscience.

While the other four characters are busy posturing, being crass and going on ego trips, Fish is quiet and steadfast by comparison. He almost feels out of place with the rest of the group. Only when Pedro whips out that signature flint eyed, flat expression as he kills other individuals does this feeling shift. Fish was clearly the side character, as he didn’t get a ton of screen time or really even a full scene. But whenever he did, he actively was the moral compass or at the very least the realist of the group.

I wish I had more to offer but there wasn’t too much to analyze here, except that Pedro is naturally just likable no matter what I see him in. And even he couldn’t save this movie! It’s safe to say I’m glad to put this one on the back burner.

Other 2022 Recommendations

I often find a fascinating piece of media with at least one Asian or Hispanic/Latin American entertainer prominently involved, but don’t end up blogging about it. Sometimes, I feel too far from the target demographic to properly discuss it. Other times, my admiration doesn’t feel as deep as it does for the likes of Everything Everywhere All at Once. Yet other times, the subject seems too intricate for me to blog about, especially if I check it out beyond its time of relevance. Still, some of this media felt entertaining and/or noteworthy enough for at least lip service. For brevity’s sake, I’ll limit my recommendations to works released this year. Each section lists them by order of release date.

Most of these works have more Asian, Hispanic, and/or Latin American cast and crew members than listed.

Honorable Mentions

Various Disney Channel cartoons: The Owl House (episodes #30-41 aired this year) and The Ghost and Molly McGee (#11-20) deliver charm and emotional appeal, best appreciated when watching the respective shows in whole. The Owl House probably would've risen into the Recommended TV Shows section if Disney didn't force everyone involved to rush the story.

Easter Sunday: Reportedly the first major motion picture with a predominantly Filipino-American cast, this comedy draws laughs from satirizing FilAm family quirks and celebrity worship culture. Unfortunately, while the characters' exaggerated demonstrations of admiration for Manny Pacquiao formed the plot line that I enjoyed the most, they wouldn't amuse viewers who never belonged to his fanbase - as I once did - and/or wish that the movie gave his role to someone non-homophobic.

Toon Makers' Sailor Moon pitches: The long-awaited unearthing of a cheesy, unfaithful, and failed attempt to adapt Naoko Takeuchi's beloved manga for American children deserves acknowledgement in this year-end retrospective, as well as at least one viewing from American Sailor Moon fans.

Turning Red: The nostalgic feature-length directorial debut of a future Pixar vice president of creative proved objectively nice enough to become one of my top 10 favorite movies from the studio.  It also became the first Pixar picture from this decade that I would purchase on Blu-ray and digital.

Day Seven: A Female Character That Needs More Screen Time?

While Elza Lanchester made a memorable impression in her short screen time, i still am a bit frustratred that the movie is titled Bride of Frankenstein but the Bride itself just appears for a few minutes before dying in a explosion.

Day Sixten: Favorite Mother Character?

Ana Terra from the novel Time and the Wind by Érico Veríssimo (pictured is her portrayal by Glória Pires in the 1985 minisseries adaptation).

Ana is a young woman from São Paulo, who comes to live in the Rio Grande do Sul countryside (them known as Continent of Rio Grande de São Pedro) with her parents, Maneco and Henriqueta, and brothers Antonio and Horacio (tough this Horacio is not as nice like Hornblower or the friend of Hamlet), because her father is entusiastic of the idea of having a property to farming in those lands that were once of the Spanish Crown but are now slowly becoming portuguese posession. One day, Ana finds an indigenous man, Pedro Missioneiro, wonded in the river, and takes him to her family home to take care of him.

Pedro was raised by spanish priests in a mission that was destroyed during the Guaranitic Wars, and because of that speaks with a spanish influenced accent, knowns latin, knows how to read and write and is a devout catholic. He also has the gift of prophecy, atributed to his devotion to the Virgin Mary

Thankfull, Pedro starts helping the man to work in the farm, gaining the confidence of the patriarch Maneco, but secretly Pedro and Ana fall in love, and she gets pregnant by him. The two don't run away together because Pedro prophesized he is about to die.

And in fact, when the pregnancy is discovered by Ana's family, her brothers kill him. Ana gives birth to a son, and names the boy Pedro Terra. Some years pass, one of Ana's brothers gets married, and old Maneco slowly, tough reluctantly starts to accept his grandson, but this hope of peace and forgiveness is interrupted when spanic bandits, known as castellanos, atack the ranch. They burn the house, kill Ana's father and brothers, her mother dies of a heart attack and she is raped. Fortunally, she survives with her son and sister in law Eulália (in the book there was a niece, Antonio's daughter Rosa, but she is cut from the minisseries because really she doesn't ad much to the story).

A family of travellers pass by the destroyed house and say they are going to a newly found village, called Santa Fe, in the region where once were the missions, and Ana decides to take her remaining family to start a new life in this village, where she works as a midwife and spinner.

Time and the Wind tells the story of how the state of Rio Grande do Sul, in the South of Brazil, was formed, trough the saga of five generations of a family. Inspired by the author's own mother, who also was an introspective woman who worked to raise her children alone, Ana Terra is the matriarch of the family Terra Cambara and a representation of the often ignored women who, living in an opressive patriarcal society, were forced to swallow their pains, to work hard keeping the house, spin, give birth and raise children, and cry in loneliness, as they waited their husbands and sons return from the several wars.

Day Seventeen: Favorite Warrior Female Character?

Queen Fantaghiro from the Fantaghiro TV Movie series.

I readed the original folktale collected by Italo Calvino and saw two of the five tv movies and i love, and i love this feisty lady who can be a sweet romantic idealist and a tough energetic badass.

The first movie was about her learning to become a warrior while dealing with a complicated relationship with her family (specially her father who discriminated her because of her gender and because he blamed her for "killing her mother" in childbirth), and discovery love with Romualdo, the young king of a neighboring kingdom who was at war with her father.

At the beggining she would internalize some bias that "not being a warrior = weekness" and mistreat her older sisters for not being fighters like her. But she would outgrow this bias and apologize to her sisters, understanding that they were strong and virtuous in her own ways, just like they respected the fact that she becamed a warrior. This grouth is great to see. In the second movie, after peace between the kingdoms has been reached and she is engaged to Romualdo, Fantaghiro considers leaving behind her warrior side. When trouble arrives in the form of an Evil Witch, Fantaghiro must understand that she will always be a warrior defending her people from the forces of Evil, but that she can also have moments of failure and find new solutions to problems besides holding a sword.

Alessandra Martinez gives a great performance to this complex, but ultimately always in the side of good, Warrior Queen, and i hope more actors and screen writers take her portrayal of Fantaghiro as a lesson on how to create compelling Warrior Female Characters, showing that vulnerability is the greatest measure of strenght.

The Last of Us: TV show Review. (Mild spoilers).

This has to be up there as one of the best video game-to-live-action adaptations, correct? 

When the first few episodes dropped, some critics and journalists praised it as the first ever good video game adaptation. However, in the last few years alone, animated shows like Cuphead, Arcane, and Castlevania already broke the "video game curse," as some might describe it. The Last of Us cements itself as a show up there as one of the greats and on par with the equally superb game. 

Years after a zombie outbreak, Joel and Ellie trek across America and endure hardship after hardship that the undead and fellow survivors throw their way. 

As far as an adaptation goes, The Last of Us tv show follows the game closely but also has its own identity. There's a blend and demonstration of respect as the creative team, Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, who also crafted the beloved game, follow the blueprint the game left, yet also add different and new elements that don't take away from the game, adding depth to the story instead. 

The third episode of the Last of Us focuses on Joel and Ellie shortly before shifting hard to tell the love ballad between characters Frank (Murray Bartlett) and Bill (Nick Offerman) for the majority of the hour. Bill's contribution to the story in the game is vastly different as Frank is already dead, and we get a glimpse into his depressing lifestyle without his partner that's coincided with a boss fight in a school against a bloater. As much as I would have loved to see a throwdown between Joel, Ellie, Bill, and a jacked zombie, the beautiful love story told instead was acceptable. It's one of the first instances the show displays that I always wanted to see with a game adaptation to film or tv. 

When adapting a book, game, or otherwise to a small or large screen, I believe you need to find a sense of balance. You have the original material before you, plenty to adapt with your vision, but also implementing original ideas that fit the story adds to the medium and makes it a more unique experience as opposed to the original material. 

The Last of Us show is what I want from an adaptation. The game is already near-perfect, and the show follows the game close enough while interjecting new ideas that differentiate it from the game while also putting it on par in terms of quality. 

Bill and Frank's love story is not the only story and dynamic that works. Episode 8, titled Left Behind, adapts the DLC from the game where you play as Ellie. A significant portion of the DLC tells another love story between Ellie and her best friend, Riley (Storm Reid), as they explore a mall. The bond these two children share comes off as authentic as they marvel at the sights before them with genuine delight. If there's something the show succeeds at, it's portraying duo dynamics. 

Bill and Frank and Ellie and Riley are two relationships fueled by love and end with tragedies, resulting in breaking the viewer's heart. Episode 5 is the same as Joel and Ellie come across two brothers, Henry (Lamar Johnson) and Sam (Keivonn Woodard). Of all the stories, how theirs ends broke my heart the most, even though I knew how it would end since I played the game before. I suppose I forgot how depressing the story of Last of Us could be. And if the show is going to continue following the route of the games, then when season 2 drops and follows the events of the second game, everyone is going to shit themselves with grief. 

Among the multiple duos and different dynamics, Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie is the driving force. Pascal and Ramsey deliver performances that put the two on par with the game's voice actors Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson. ( Sidenote: I love how they got the voice of Ellie to play her mother in the show. A genius choice. However, having Baker play 2nd fiddle to a cannibal as opposed to his counterpart in Johnson was odd and comedic in juxtaposition, but he made the role work.) Pascal's portrayal of Joel has him put up a much stronger stoic front that Ramsey's Ellie slowly breaks down as the two forms a bond by the last episode. Joel may have lost a daughter in the first episode, but he found a new one in the end. 

There are not many complaints I have about the show. It's well-acted and smartly written, the action scenes are shot well, and the story feels grounded for a zombie apocalypse tale. It's literally just as good as the game. 

I do find two gripes. One, I think the show could've used one more episode to help with the pacing. The whole section with Joel and Ellie with Bill in the school was omitted in place of Bill and Frank's love story. While I respect the choice, it would've been nice to find a way to incorporate Joel and Ellie having to traverse a school and watch out for the undead. Ideally, you could have the duo strengthen their bond more in an episode like this while also avoiding and/or murdering more zombies. (which brings us to my second point.) Two, there weren't enough zombies. The huge concern in the apocalypse for survivors appears to be other survivors. Realistically, zombies, clickers, and undead in any form should be just as worrying as other groups of survivors. But across several episodes, the lack of presence of zombies is felt. I hope season 2 rectifies the issue by displaying more zombies as a terrifying threat. 

As amazing as this show was, it was equally depressing. 4.5/5. I am simultaneously looking forward to and dreading the events to follow in the next season.

Injuries: Dave sustains several injuries before his death: an injury to his right arm when he was caught in a hotel explosion around seven or so years ago. Dave hits the back of his head when he is blown across the tower, which dazes him. He also loses a tooth when McCall elbows him in the jaw. He has his left eye gouged out by McCall shortly before he dies. He is also lacerated four times by his own knife that McCall uses. He looks to be lacerated on his left upper chest/shoulder, his right side arm, left thigh and right side leg; these lacerations look to slice through nerves rendering Dave unable to move, before he is stabbed in the lower left third rib; a close quarter technique - the same way Dave killed Susan. McCall then kicks Dave off the tower and he hits the rocks with the back of his head, resulting in death if he hadn't already yet died. The tide then washes his body away.

(From Dave Wiki Fandom Website) Prior to the events of the Equalizer 2, Dave York served in the U.S. military. At some point, either while still in the military or shortly after his discharge, Dave was recruited into the DIA, and became part of a covert black ops team which consisted of Resnik, Ari, and Kovac. Dave also met former U.S. Marine Robert McCall, who became his team leader, mentor, and close friend. He also befriended fellow DIA agent Susan Plummer. For seven years, Dave and Robert worked together on many covert operations for the DIA. According to Dave himself, most of these operations involved assassinations.

Despite Dave and Robert's close friendship, Robert who had become disillusioned with the DIA and wished to be with his wife, decided to fake his own death. While on a mission in a foreign country, Dave witnessed, what he believed, was Robert being killed in a car bombing (website says 'car bombing' but Dave says 'when that hotel came down on us' in the film, so it's possible the blast from the car bomb destroyed the lobby that Dave was standing in). Three months after Robert's alleged death, Dave's black ops team was then shutdown by the government. Despite this, Dave continued working as an agent for the DIA and worked closely with Susan.

Unbeknownst to Susan and the DIA, Dave secretly went rogue, as he felt disillusioned by the government's decision to shut down his black ops team. He and his former teammates decided to go private and utilized their skills to become assassins and hitmen for hire.

Dave has a cabin that he mentions to McCall in their conversation in the park where he takes his wife and kids for vacations, although it is not stated where this cabin is exactly.

On outer appearance, Dave is a family man. He lives in a suburban house with two cars, a wife and two children and a modest job in the DIA. He is seen taking out the garbage bins and helping his youngest daughter with her homework at the dining table. He refers to both his wife and daughter affectionately as "baby."

Volver by Pedro Almodovar (Assignment #7)

Volver by Pedro Almodovar is a beautiful film that journeys through three main topics: tragedy and loss, female resilience, and familial values. The film follows three Spanish women as they navigate through life, both together and separately. This is a very female-centric film, greatly focusing on the specific hardships that women everywhere face on a daily basis. The relationships explored in the film are complex, and build upon one another. In addition to this, Almodovar uses vibrant colors to correlate with the moods of the film’s various scenes, furthering the emotions expressed within his characters. 

One of the major themes throughout this film is the theme of tragedy and loss; main character Raimunda’s parents die unexpectedly, leaving her grief-stricken and struggling to cope. Almodovar depicts Raimunda leaning on those around her as she deals with her grief, showing that humans naturally come together when faced with adversity. I truly enjoyed watching the relationships between characters unfold in this story. I truly admire the ways in which the characters in Volver were portrayed on screen. I couldn’t help but get lost in the film, almost completely forgetting that what I was watching was a piece of art and not reality. Almodovar’s characters have a profound way of expressing their deepest emotions, both visually and audibly. I applaud Almodovar for creating such complex characters and relationships because they feel so distinctly real when you watch them interact. 

Another strong theme in this film is the theme of female resilience. Almodovar chose to make all three of the main characters of Volver women, which is a strong and significant choice. The female characters in this film are both strong and capable of overcoming diversity, specifically Raimunda’s character, who we see the most. In the film, Raimunda is abused by her husband, Paco, but she chooses to stay strong and suffer through the pain for the sake of her daughter, Paula. Eventually, she realizes that this is not the example that she wants to set for Paula, and she stands up to Paco in self-defense. Additionally in Volver, Almodovar highlights the importance of motherhood and the effects that parental relationships have on children’s development. The relationship between Raimunda and Paula is the “main event” of Volver, and watching just how much Raimunda truly loves and cares for her daughter is fascinating. In addition to caring for Paula, Raimunda also looks out for her struggling sister, Sole, and her elderly neighbor, Agustina. Through this, it is clear that Raimunda is a naturally caring and nurturing person, even when she herself is struggling in her personal life. I really enjoyed watching Raimunda and Sole’s relationship unfold throughout the film. Both struggling with the loss of their parents, they have to learn to lean on each other now more than ever. 

Lastly, Volver explores the importance of family, both through genetics and through choice. Throughout the film, Almodovar explores feeling responsible for taking care of family members, even when that responsibility is invisible. For example, Raimunda struggles with feeling responsible for the care of both her sister and her elderly neighbor, even though at times, she is struggling too much to care for herself. Ultimately, Raimunda chooses to care for others over caring for herself in Volver, struggling with typical Spanish cultural expectations of putting others before yourself. Additionally, the topic of mother-daughter bonds is strongly displayed throughout Volver. In addition to the relationship between Raimunda and Paula, the relationship between Raimunda and her own mother, Irene, is also shown to viewers. Although Raimunda and Irene seem to have a rocky history, it’s clear that at their core, they have a strong and loving bond. Raimuna’s devotion to her own daughter, Paula, is a reflection of her own relationship with Irene growing up, showing that Irene taught Raimuna to be a loving and selfless person despite her own personal struggles.

Pedro Almodovar’s Volver is a touching film about tragedy and loss, female resilience, and the importance of family. In addition to these themes, Almodovar uses a variety of vibrant and expressive colors in Volver, as he does in all of his films. Colors are used symbolically throughout the film to demonstrate the character’s emotions as they range from one end of the spectrum to the other. Because of this, Volver is visually captivating, pulling its viewers in at first glance. Overall, Volver is a richly complex film, both visually and contextually, making it a highly interesting and enjoyable watch.
