Draupadi and her Five Husbands
Co-hosting a weekly pride drawing prompt thing on Instagram but thought I'd post the work here too!
Week 2's prompt was 'Mortals' and I chose to portray the one and only mythological examples of polyandry to my knowledge - Draupadi who was married to 5 Pandava brothers.
[Dense Hindu canon ramble up ahead]
Back in the day, princesses could choose their own husbands and a sort of a courtship contest would be held to win the princess' hand and prove yourself to her. This custom was called swayamvar (swayam = self, var = husband) and all 5 Pandav brothers, princes themselves, participated in Draupadi's Swayamvar. Arjun won the contest, and keeping royal politics in background among other things, Draupadi agreed to marry Arjun. When the five brothers returned home, and told their mother 'Look what/who we brought home' (non-translatable wordplay), their mother said without looking, 'Split (it) between the 5 of you'. Here's where the story and interpretation goes awry. Most modern interpretations depict Draupadi as being tortured, forced to marry 5 MEN! No eyebrows are raised when a king marries 5 women though. Krishna, a king from the same story, had 16,000 wives and several relationships outside of wedlock. Never is Krishna portrayed as tortured and oppressed.
Draupadi was fire herself — that's not a metaphor. She was born of the fire of vengeance her father had for a childhood friend. She would not have stayed in a situation she was forced in. The Pandavas even had a set up where the other brothers wouldn't interrupt Draupadi's time with one of them. Each Pandava themselves also had multiple relationships with other women but Draupadi was still their queen consort (patrani).
Despite modern interpretations, misogynistic interpretations, queerphobic interpretations, I would like to believe their relationship(s) were an early example of ethical nonmonogamy and polyamory. And being the protags of the epic, it also reflects how acceptable this would have been perhaps at some point in time. We may never know for sure, but one can hope....

Life Lessons from Mahabharat
That life isn’t fair to anyone
Karna was neglected the moment he was born from his birth right. He was humiliated because of the status he was adopted into, despite being a Prince. He told this to Krishna who replied by reminding him how his uncle was wanting to kill him before his life even begin, how he was separated from his parents the moment he was born. Everybody in life has challenges, and we can’t escape it.
Having a lot of everything can be dangerous
Gandhari had 100 sons, but being blind-folded she not only captured herself from the outer world, but also prevented herself from the upbringing of her children. She wanted more then she could handle. Draupadi possessed immense beauty, reason why men lusted for her. Draupadi wished for an husband that had wisdom and moral values, will be strong and well built, a good archer, handsome and intelligent. Not found in one man, she was granted 5 husbands that all individually possessed these qualities, all who failed to protect her from her humiliation in the dice game.
Revenge isn’t always the answer
Shakuni revenged to destroy Hastinapur, in answer to his sister’s marriage to a blind man. His revenge was a astronomical reason for Mahabharat. At the end he died, and left his sister childless. Drupada sought for revenge on Drona when the later attacked him with the help of Kuru Princes and snatched half of his Kingdom. He performed a Great Sacrifice to obtain a son who could slay Drona and a Daughter who could enter Kuru Clan - He lost his sons in the great war and met death in the hands of Drona.
Half Knowledge is more dangerous
Arjuna's son Abhimanyu teaches us how half-knowledge can have an adverse impact. While Abhimanyu knew how to enter the Chkaravyuh, he did not know the way out.
Loyal Friends can take you places
The Pandavas had Lord Krishna, and the Kauravas had Karna. Both of them always backed the two parties, no matter what. In fact, Duryodhan was really weak without Karna.
You cannot be stopped if you are passionate about what you do.
Eklavya was even better than Arjun. He hid himself behind the trees and grasped everything that Drona taught Arjun. His passion for archery and hunger for knowledge made him good at archery then Arjun.
Perhaps the biggest I learnt was: It’s all about how we shape our life, it’s our choices that shape us into becoming the best or worst version of ourself.

If you are still taking prompts, can you do a Pandu does not exist/Pandu dies fic?
Hello anon! Thank you for the prompt!
Pandu doesn't exist throughout most of the Mahabharat, so I presume you're asking if he dies before wedding Kunti or doesn't exist at all?
In that case, I think much of the Mahabharat wouldn't happen at all. Despite his almost negligible existence, his familial position as well as his death forms the crux of the epic. Without him, the five brothers would not exist together, or have any claim to the throne, so pretty much Duryodhan is the projected Emperor.
This also made me realise how one dead man's name united five brothers who don't share the same blood and I'm not sure this is a realization I needed this early in the morning :')

Hello
Another Mahabharata doubt again
Pardon me
But draupadi loved Arjun right?
But did Arjun loved Subhadra the most?
And like i didn't get it why would Krishna give orders to Arjuna to abduct her
What was the reason behind it?
Isn't it against the rules?
Please enlighten me

Rudraprayag…!! Named after Lord Shiva's Rudra avatar (incarnation), Rudraprayag is an ancient holy town situated at the confluence of Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers, at a distance of 34 km from Srinagar in the Garhwal region. Rudraprayag marks the fourth confluence between Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers. The fifth and final union takes place at Devprayag where the Alaknanda river joins Bhagirathi to form the Ganga and flow down to the plains. While the town is known for revered temples and pristine natural beauty, the presence of two separate routes for Badrinath (around 150 km away) and Kedarnath Dham (around 50 km away) from Rudraprayag make it an important destination for religious tourism, attracting tourists and devotees throughout the year, who make a beeline for the Shiva and Jagdamba temples here. Headquarters of the eponymous district, the region is blessed with natural beauty and the town is surrounded by lakes and glaciers. Hindu mythology says that to master the mysteries of music, sage Narad did a severe penance to appease Lord Shiva, who appeared in his Rudra avatar to bless Narad. The Pandava Dance, a dance form based on the dance and music of the Kaurava and Pandavas as described in the epic Mahabharata, is very popular among locals in this district. It is believed that after Kurukshetra war, to repent for the death of kin, the Pandavas visited this region to pray to Lord Shiva. Even today, locals here celebrate Pandav Leela in the memory of that visit. . . . . . #rudraprayag #garhwal #uttarakhand #shiv #pandavas #pandav #river #sangam #incarnation #folk #religious #information #informative #rohitgpt009 #mandakini #alaknanda #ganga #touristattraction (at Rudraprayag रुद्रप्रयाग) https://www.instagram.com/p/CoedXIIvmmI/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The Pandav Sarovar and temple is located in Dasuya town in Punjab. This ancient site is, supposedly as per legend, dug by Bhim. How was Chakravyuha Rachna in (Mahabharata)?
First off, it is difficult to imagine the scale of this formation. The Mahabharat was one of the largest wars ever fought, and armies used a scale of measure known as Akshauhini to measure strength. As single Akshauhini consisted of 21,870 chariots, 21,870 elephants; 65,610 cavalry and 109,350 infantry[1]. Now, it is said that over the course of the war, 18-20 Akshauhini senas (armies) were killed. I do not have to do the calculations for you to figure out how huge the armies actually were. And this in a concentrated around the Kurukshetra, which is roughly 48 x 128 Km in area[2]. That makes a very dense war.
So I imagine that there were enough men to spare for a formation like the Chakravyuha, more so when:
It was designed by Drona, one of the smartest tactician on the side of the Kauravas
The prize was (originally) Yudhisthira, who was the leader of the Pandavas
The formation was designed as a spinning wheel (hence the "chakra" in the name) and a puzzle (hence the "vyuh"), with the formation in a constant state of rotation.... the rotation may be seen as the motion of the helix of a screw. The formation was also called Padmavyuh (or the Lotus formation)[3]. Also, the inner layers were made of of soldiers, each stronger than the ones on the immediate outer layer. Let us use a gaming terminology and call the warriors as levels. Level 7 being the strongest, and lower level warriors at the outside. Here is what would happen to anyone entering through the mouth (now imagine the same thing happening DURING WAR)....
Tumblr media
And remember, this doesn't mean the person who entered ran around the maze. The maze engulfed him.. yeah, imagine that:
Think about it... the warrior is in a constant state of battle while the formation circles around him. He keeps getting tired, while the further inside he goes, the less worn out fighters he meets! Both physically and mentally, this makes it difficult for the warrior who has entered.
Now, the Chakravyuh was a brilliant military tactic. Basically it was a juggernaut. The whole formation continuously spun across the battlefield, continuously fighting, and the moment one member of the formation was killed, there was a sliding motion that propagated from the position held by the killed man, right upto the center of the formation, thus ensuring that at all times, there existed a continuous maze.
At last fighting with the opponent soldiers, one reached to the centre of the Chakravyuh that is shown as a ‘point’ in the above figure. This was the time when one was surrounded by the most ferocious of soldiers.
Indeed, it was not easy to reach to the centre and definitely very hard to come out of the ‘Vyuh Rachna’!
It is the evidence of how efficient and tactful our ancient Indian cavalry was!
