rewatched newsies a couple nights ago and i've kinda realized something

so, king of new york, right? racetrack takes pretty much center stage with that one. this is his somewhat big moment to shine in the spotlight, and it's meant to be a pretty uplifting song for the other newsies. but the way the song opens had started to confuse me a little.

race is literally named off the fact that he goes to the sheepshead races very very often. like that is His Thing. BUT, when we get to king of new york, his line is not about that. instead, it's romeo's line. which is kinda weird right? especially with race's line being about his shoelaces as one of the cleaner looking newsies. like That's the thing you're so worried about? that's what you'd do as a famous person? but that's not where my point arises

going back to romeo's line. hearing it again on stage (and by stage i mean livesies), it sounds a little bit like romeo's mocking race, right? that can't just be me who sees that. And that's exactly what i think he's doing. the newsies don't immediately hop onto race's idea of "being famous just gets you everything" the moment he starts singing. sure, they get a little morale boost with being on the front page, but katherine's news about there being a blackout on strike news sets that back a bit, especially with the talk immediately after following crutchie and jack and all the stuff that happened just yesterday. front page or not, they still don't think it's possible to win after their defeat the day before. especially not without jack. not without a clear leader (i don't think they fully considered davey candidate for leader at this point but that's just me)

but Race doesn't see that. he instantly jumps on the whole front page thing and being famous not because he's just realized it and needs to share with his friends how damn cool he is for that. he's using king of new york to lift them back up. he starts it off, no matter of the others mocking and joking about it. and then albert joins in. then les. then davey. then katherine. and at that point everyone's like "okay, maybe he's onto something" and That's why i think this number is so powerful. some of the things they sing about may sound ridiculous or maybe even too out of reach for them, but fuck it! they've earned this. they've earned these dreams and fantasies and this fantastic tap dance number.

this is what gets them back on their feet. what i think gives davey the idea to start the rally, because after this huge boost, they're going for something big, especially after realizing that they were putting up a fight, that pulitzer and wiesel and the delanceys were genuinely worried about this strike, that they now know for sure brooklyn's in on it all too. they genuinely believe they can win this. that there's a chance. and all it took was just the ideas of what were to come if they Did win. maybe i'm thinking too hard into this silly number, but hey, the whiplash from santa fe to king of new york to letter from the refuge has to exist for a reason, right??

I am choosing to never get over Marth’s supports in FE Warriors.

Specifically: Marth and Ryoma.

Just, what’s up with that opener? “You carry yourself with such grace for one so young,” Ryoma, please. And Marth’s response is to completely ignore that part and focus instead on Ryoma mentioning he fights well (Ryoma’s next line)

Every time anyone compliments Marth in this game, he either completely ignores the comment or turns the compliment on whoever he’s speaking with.

Ryoma: “You’re swordsmanship is impressive.”

Marth: “I have a long way to go before my swordsmanship reaches your level of skill.”

This seems to be a common trait of Marth, throughout his appearances. He’s a humble character, who prefers to downplay whatever he’s done to focus on his allies’ achievements. This holds true for his comments in Heroes, too, where he says all of his accomplishments are thanks to his allies.

Depending on how you play Fire Emblem, this could very well be completely true!

Anyway, I love Marth’s inflections when he speaks. I don’t know how to explain it completely, but he is… awkward? He’s very formal, and his tone is polite even when he’s arguing with Caeda. Awkward isn’t the right word, maybe stilted?

(While discussing voices and Fire Emblem characters, I want to briefly touch on Xander’s voice, which does not fit him. He sounds like a frail, little old man. Or, maybe he just isn’t pronunicating as much as characters like Xander or his own siblings? Either way, it is always a shock to me when I hear his voice)

I like Marth’s support with Tiki especially. In every support he has with absolutely anyone, he comes across as kind of motherly? Like, he just supports their decisions and is very gentle while he leads them away from exaggerating. With Tiki, his tone is very brotherly. He’s very obliging to her. It’s very funny that he tells Tiki that he knew they’d be fine when he heard she showed up.

The way Marth talks to the others, I mean aside from Xander and Ryoma, really implies that when he’s nervous, he covers it by speaking more politely. He uses less contractions, which is a shorthand way of making a character feel more refined. And he enunciates very crisply. Alongside his tone, his conversations with people he views as intimidating, like Xander and Ryoma, make him appear more stilted than Marth actually is.

Marth is a very stilted speaker, but he’s also charming? In a very blunt way. I like his conversation with Lyn, because he manages to call her beautiful without making it sound flirtatious. A wonderful talent, I wish I had that.

But also, the way he speaks to Celica and Lyn both is very interesting. Most people would get upset at Celica, since she basically questions all of his life choices, but he’s very calm about it. He doesn’t get upset with her like he does when Caeda suggests he sit off on the side. He doesn’t get frustrated at all. And it’s clear that she sees Alm in Marth, and I think the implication is that Marth knows her complaints aren’t really about him.

But, with both Lyn and Celica, with everyone really but they make fine examples, he is obliging. With Celica, he basically says “I have to fight because that’s the path I’ve chosen, but you have taught me to focus on peace after the fighting’s done.” With Lyn, “I’ll mentor you and you’ll mentor me.” His compliments just sound like a mother to me. I mean, he tells Lyn she’s beautiful in her own way, he is such a mother-

I admittedly am not sure of how old Marth is supposed to be in this game. A lot of characters talk about him being impressive for his age, but what is his age? The number 16 sticks with me, and I looked it up and yeah, no, he’s like 16. He is, by far, the youngest mother protagonist in the series. I think he might be closer, in Warriors at least, to 17 or 18, since Celica’s dialogue implies Marth’s war lasts for years, and Marth says that they’re right in the thick of it. (Not his exact phrasing.) As well, he knows Tiki already, so it has to be somewhat far into the game.

Marth is a fascinating character to dissect the conversations of. It’s difficult for me to feel like I’m speaking in character, because Marth doesn’t act his age even slightly.

The closest we get to Marth acting 16 is probably his conversation with Frederick. He says, “I don’t need anyone to hold my hand,” which would seem out of character if not for the context: Frederick is trying to clean up after Marth. Marth gets a bit flustered because of the implication that Frederick might view him as needing his hand held, like Frederick is viewing him as a child. Even so, he’s very graceful with his complaints, and one might not notice why he’s upset, or the implications behind why he’s upset at least, upon first viewing.

Warriors does a terrible job with height. How tall are these people? You’re trying to tell me that Marth is similar in height to Xander, Chrom, Lucina, Celica, Lyn, and Tiki? All at the same time? I don’t believe you.

I do, however, believe that Marth is relatively small. First: he’s young enough and his voice is high enough for me to be reasonably convinced that he hasn’t had his last growth spurt yet. Second: Lucina is consistently mistaken for Marth, and seeing her next to him, she is similar in build to him. Even if she wasn’t, however, Chrom and Lissa are both direct descendants of him too, and neither of them are exactly huge. Third: Marth grew up in a castle, but only for the most part. For a large portion of the years he would have spent growing, he was on the run or fighting in a war. This almost certainly stunted his growth, at least a bit. Fourth: Marth is bad at horse-riding. He mentions it in Heroes, but specifically, he says he needs help getting on and off of a horse.

Marth is smol. The prosecution rests.

This whole post started because I think it’s really funny that Ryoma calls Marth graceful. His exact word is “graceful.” And, don’t get me wrong, Marth certainly is, that fact is undisputed by any source material, Marth is a graceful person— it’s still really funny that Ryoma comments on it! Technically, I suppose you could view Lyn as commenting on it too. I mean, she says he holds himself “nobly” —which does make it a bit funny that she then asks Marth to teach her to act more like a noble, she really just sees him as embodying the word, huh — but you could view it as her calling him graceful without using that word.

Ofher characters’ reactions to Marth truly are very amusing. They often say “someone like you.” Lucina and Chrom are my favourite examples, because they both are SO pumped to meet Marth. Lucina is fangirling so hard!

(Lucina mentions that she thought of Marth as different than he actually is, like her mental image of him was off I mean, and it has the same vibes to me as Shen Qingqiu seeing Liu Qingge. Don’t ask questions, just take it and go-)

Chrom’s support is fun in that Marth says “I get so caught up in helping others that I forget my own safety.” Celica’s support is fun in that she says she wants to pray for him and he says, “I’ll see that your prayers are answered.” (Which, I mean, he’s kind of likening himself to a god, but I think Marth just doesn’t really get religion? I think he just doesn’t understand that gods answer prayers.) Xander’s support is funny because Xander says he has a lot of work to go to live up to his father and Marth says, “I can’t imagine someone more imposing than you.”

All in all, Marth truly is a fascinating character. I have spent so much of my time thinking about Marth, time I will never get back, and I do not regret a single second.

BSD 101 - an attempt at a complete breakdown: dazai’s strategy, fyodor’s options, chuuya [analysis/theories]

in BSD chapter 101, we saw dazai (as far as we know), drown fyodor and chuuya. it gave me one hell of a shock, but also trust mr asagiri to pull off something like this (i will never get tired of it, but man does it cause me stress, lol.). i, for one, absolutely LOVED this chapter because... it did not go the way i expected at all!

but it got me thinking. like (basically) everyone else, i was not convinced that both fyodor and chuuya would have drowned so quickly. it just doesn’t make sense. so then i thought about it more — well, specifically, what dazai is getting at. his ulterior motives for doing this so early on in the game, over the course of this last week.

he stated he wanted to kill dostoyevsky before the game was up. which — i have no doubts he will do his best to make good on this assertion later on. however, i find it very hard to believe it’s just that. especially right now.

dazai, after all, is incredibly strategic, despite his (very) unconventional plans and methods. and before violence or murder, he values gaining intel and information. it was made painfully obvious in fifteen and the dark era, and i think it’s something that is integral to the way he strategises, even now at 22.

and fyodor is a literal goldmine of strategic information. he’s the mastermind behind the DOA schemes. it’s hard to believe that dazai would just... pass up on that. any information that he could find out could be used to manipulate his own to not only stop fyodor, but to undo the entire ADA frame-up mess.

after all, i’d argue that even if fyodor dies, it doesn’t mean his plans are stopped — the way his plans work is almost similar to a domino-effect. any information about his ability, background, further allies, i would argue that all of that could be useful to dazai in some shape or form, because they all offer paths to potential solutions.

all that said, my take on this heavy-water-drowning-situation is:

dazai is primarily testing fyodor here in order to gain important information out of him, such as his ability, or a way to communicate the outside, as opposed to killing him.

i mean, the thing is, whether or not fyodor dies here, or whether or not he plays another card, it comes out as a win for dazai, because either outcome is useful (which, i think, is the real genius, in my small-brained opinion).

but let me explain further, anyway! here are the sections i’ve broken this down into:

on chuuya (storm bringer spoilers)

dazai’s strategy in relation to fyodor

now, dazai telling sigma his way of contacting ango means that he very much trusts that he won’t be betrayed, i think, first and foremost.

but, sigma’s ability is information exchange. and while it doesn’t work on dazai (due to ability nullification, as sigma emphasised throughout this chapter), it could work on fyodor, if he were to ever be touched. i would argue that dazai is preempting this precise scenario by pushing fyodor into a position where he’s got to reveal some information first, to keep them on a level playing field. we know that man predicts all kinds of ridiculous situations, even the most unlikely ones.

because additionally, not only does this have strategic benefits — it also serves as a backup plan. in forcing a card out of fyodor’s deck, if dazai acts quick enough using this information, he could shut down whatever fedya has planned next before he has an opportunity to catch up (dazai, you clever bastard, you.).

and if that falls through, then he hasn’t lost the match, following this logic he laid out towards naomi during the guild arc (chapter 24), regardless of whatever sigma learns from fyodor:

if the enemy has as much information as you, whoever outwits the other wins. if they know more than you, you lose, no matter what.

(i do think that dazai does have a specific reason for allying with sigma, but that’s besides the point here!)

SO. back to the information exchange ability: we know that sigma’s ability works for the pieces of information that one would like to find out the most.

and it has very much been established that both fyodor and dazai are keen to know this exact piece of information about the other — their methods of contacting the ground. see chapter 64:

even if they are in a prison break duel, they still are in the prison, so ultimately that information could still be useful. plus, even if they were outside of the prison — finding out fyodor’s method of communication is useful for more insights into his own brand of strategic thinking, and as well leads him to find out about any other allies he might have besides fukuchi and the other decay members (especially since sigma stated that nikolai was initially meant to die within the initial plan. and moreover, there are crucial differences within the way dazai and fyodor operate. while similar, they aren’t completely identical!).

and adding onto this is the fact that dazai allegedly doesn’t know fyodor’s ability, as he admitted to fitzgerald in chapter 53, right at the end of the cannibalism arc.

and nikolai, too, intends to find out fyodor’s ability via sigma (chapter 78):

given how they’ve been highlighted previously, i think either of these pieces of information may be revealed and thus could be the card that dostoyevsky chooses to play — especially since nikolai is more-or-less implying that knowing fyodor’s ability is the key to getting rid of him, once and for all.

and there are more reasons in chapter 101 itself, as follows:

i think this is the key part here.

this is clearly bait: dazai is inviting fyodor to either prove him right or wrong, and if he is right, then to play another card up his sleeve.

either way, fyodor will have to let a crucial piece of information go. he’s cornered, effectively, because no matter what he does — dazai has something to work with.

which leads me onto the other reason:

the “new card” option

if the ability option doesn’t work, then this is, logically, the next point of action.

but: fyodor has just played a card — deploying vampire! chuuya as an ally. so, certainly, from a more strategic point of view, this isn’t great. and in an ideal world, this card could help him get out of this situation.

indeed, if dazai’s assertion about chuuya’s gravitational ability is to be believed, and he isn’t bluffing, then — yeah, fyodor’s in one hell of a bind. he has no choice but to use another card if he wants to survive.

(i, for one, think dazai’s bluffing, especially given how well he knows chuuya and his ability! but that isn’t really relevant right now.)

but we know fyodor certainly doesn’t intend to die here.

so, one option to help him is certainly contacting a new, powerful ally to help. but to do that, in such an enclosed room, and with dazai’s eyes on him, and limited time, would result in him having to give the game away on that.

so, what is fyodor to do?

fyodor’s potential options

essentially, what was laid out above are fyodor’s (likeliest, in my opinion) options if he has to play a card. which, i mean, judging from this facial expression here, wouldn’t be too surprising if he chose to do so.

but — that’s only if he decides to deploy a card.

so, what if he doesn’t?

well, the first option is die by drowning to death.

but we’ve already established that this is not what’s going to happen. or, at least, the chances of that happening are very slim, in my view, given how central fyodor is to the current arc. if it does, i’ll be very surprised.

the second option requires him to rely on the card he already has in play: chuuya.

he could wait to see what chuuya does, though time is ticking.

because fyodor knows about chuuya’s ability, too. maybe not the specifics like dazai, but enough to know that he's incredibly powerful. which is, no doubt, partially why he chose him as his piece for this duel.

he knows about corruption. he witnessed both the dragons head conflict (when soukoku were 16), and the events of dead apple. he knows the true capabilities of for the tainted sorrow’s destructive powers. and it could be that this is what he is relying on to get them out of this situation.

hell, he could even rework a soukoku strategy into his personal plan to escape meursault by taking advantage of their co-ordination. because he definitely took note that chuuya’s absolute trust in dazai was what drove him to tackle that dragon-singularity head-on back in dead apple.

and if you ask me, this kind of thing is right up fyodor’s alley: exploiting any potential cracks in people and their relationships, as he did with the child who blew themselves up in front of kunikida, in chapter 47. he exploited that trust for their older brother in the most twisted way possible.

yes, this carries the risk that he gets torn to shreds by a black hole, with how small the room is. but while meursault’s walls are anti-ability, how strong are they against literal ability singularities, as corruption essentially is?

if this panel is anything to go by, regular gravity-manipulating chuuya could, in fact, eventually break through (check the “in time” part!). so i don’t think it’s too much of a reach to say corruption could completely obliterate those 120cm thick walls.

in fact, corruption could not only stop the heavy-water drowning, scenario, but completely destroy meursault entirely, assuming it couldn’t stand against that kind of force.

so, what happens here, if that’s the case?

(even more) on chuuya [storm bringer spoilers]

the theories regarding chuuya have been everywhere! so i’ll keep this one as brief as possible. storm bringer spoilers ahead, but also please be warned that my memory is rather hazy when it comes to storm bringer so please correct me if i get any information about it wrong, as i’ve read it significantly less times than i have the manga and other light novels!

now, i also don’t think chuuya will die yet. i am personally of the opinion that this is another soukoku strategy, by the name of “goodbye”, as many people have mentioned (see this tweet here for details!) — given that asagiri has named strategies of theirs also by real-life works. but how would this work?

it’s possible that dazai is attempting to see if putting such extreme stress on chuuya would force him back to normal — i.e, change him back from vampire to human to grant him his full autonomy back.

if not, i also wonder if this is to force him to activate corruption by forcibly opening his “gate” when he can’t use the chant, given the vampirism has almost completely stripped him of his own autonomy (as covered in storm bringer, opening this “gate” is, in the simplest way i can explain it, what enables chuuya to activate corruption).

the key bit is this: according to verlaine, this “gate” can also be opened by outside forces, such as what happened when rimbaud tried to use chuuya’s ability to defeat him, and it created suribachi city in the process, when chuuya would have been 7.

and, with the hat being the very last thing we saw of chuuya in this chapter, i don’t think that this is too far-fetched. because the hat is what helps chuuya control his corruption (as far as i’m aware!). foreshadowing, mayhaps?

it could be that dazai is apologising that he has had to force chuuya into using corruption. because — ever since it was first used with him, he has always given chuuya the choice to activate it, no matter what. if this is the case, this could change how soukoku function as a duo.

but what happens if chuuya uses corruption?

here’s the thing. it’s no secret that corruption could easily blow meursault to bits. but this kind of chaos could also be exactly what dazai is going for.

after all, during the sky casino arc, atsushi says this (chapter 72):

dazai-san wants this to become an all-out brawl.

arguably this quote is specific to the situation atsushi is in. however, from this, and other instances, we can infer that dazai is no stranger to chaos, nor is he afraid of creating it. in fact, chaos might be where his unconventional strategies thrive best.

let’s take, for example, when atsushi was first taken by the guild and he jumped out of the moby dick to deliver kyuu’s doll to dazai. the city was in literal flames, but dazai thought it through, adapted and modified his plan to use the chaos to his advantage to outmanoeuvre literal raining bullets. the same could apply here.

but, then, where does this leave fyodor?

if dazai gets chuuya to use corruption and nullifies it, i reckon that chuuya will be back to his usual human state. but we all know how much corruption takes out of chuuya.

so effectively, that renders this card out of commission, and thus, fyodor’s forced to play a new card. or, he manipulates this new situation, or both. but either way, i feel like this does work to dazai’s advantage regardless.

(i said that i’d keep this brief, but i think this ended up being the longest section, rip).

anyways, let’s wrap this up!

summary

honestly, i don’t even think that this covers half of it. there are so many other volatile factors at play.

why the hell did fyodor choose chuuya? what if chuuya doesn’t activate corruption? what if fyodor does deploy a new card, how does dazai react? what other kinds of cards does he have? what happens if dazai’s plan falls through entirely? lots of people have also pointed out that the heavy water affects human bodies, but seeing as chuuya is a vampire, it might not affect him. what happens then?

furthermore, equally, asagiri could bring even more variables into the picture. which makes this all the more exciting!

personally, though, i think there’s absolutely no way fyodor is taking this lying down. and dazai definitely has other cards up his sleeve and other plans! it does seem like he’s spent quite some time putting this one into play, so it is quite possible that he felt this one had the highest success rate or potential. and i’m sure he has other methods to kill fyodor, but he might have set this one into motion first to get to the circumstances necessary for that to happen. it’ll be interesting to see what move fyodor does in response to this, and hopefully (my gut tells me) we may have a big reveal regarding him soon!

anything could happen at this point to be honest. but whatever asagiri has them do, i’m excited, and i can’t wait to see what he has in store!

i thoroughly resonate with that post of specifying what exactly i like about you. 😪

i want to do my best to be conscious of the things about you that i do like that make you you, if that makes sense. personally i find it understandable and expected to have questioning thoughts and need reassurance, so personally i never want to leave a person i care about with vagueness surrounding the reasons.

of course, it's easy to simply reverberate that i love you because you're you, or that i love you but i don't really know why i just do, and things of that nature, but i think that that vagueness sometimes leads to an even deeper unrest, and ultimately that's just not good enough of an answer.

from personal experience, i know what it's like to ask for reassurance and be left worse off afterwards. you start spiralling and snowballing, wondering what makes you you, did they ever try to even learn or acknowledge what makes you you, or do they just say that out of a convenient avoidance of giving you reassurance...

it's just not in my character to leave people in that state of disarray. i feel like at the very least, i can instill some of my confidence in them so they can carry some of that love with them and hopefully are able to see why i choose to continue to be loyal to them (as if i even thought otherwise but small steps).
