Mythology Weekend - Otso
In Finnish mythology, Otso is the spirit of the bear and was rarely referred to directly out of reverance. The spirit was also called Ohto, Kontjo, metsän kuningas (forest king) or as a friend, brother, or cousin. If a bear had to be killed, a sacred ritual of Peijainen, or a mourning fest, was held and the bear was seen as a beloved relative and honorable community member. A bear's flesh was not eaten, for it was seen as cannibalism, unless it was symbolically rendered into the flesh of another animal. The head was mounted so the soul could return to the sky and the skull was a sacred symbol of the importance that bears held in ancient Finnish life.

Finnish mythology Scar x Grian!!
(I am Finnish myself, I am also a pagan))
Scar is the god of the forests, as much as people love to say that Hiisi is, Scar is the protector and provider for the forests, he can shapeshift between a bear form and his human form, his god name is Otso.
Grian, who is not really a god, but a swan from the afterlife. He is the swan of Tuonela, he swims in the lakes of the dead, singing his awfully heartbreaking, yet beautiful song. Grian can also shape shift between a swan and a human! Or a human with swan wings!
Grian is absolutely spooked by the sudden appearance of a BEAR, in the lake of the dead. Grian is sure he’s dreaming as he swims closer and seeing that the bear is no other than Scar himself. Grian shifts into his human form and drags Scar to dry land, He asks his sister, Cleo, the snake of Tuonela to bring him herbs from the overworld. Soon enough Scar is healed and suprise surprise- The good ol’ god of forests is in LOVE. Grian is ..
Oblivious. For months. As when a helpless god tries his best to try and win Grian over (seriously, trying so hard as if someone else were competing for Grians hand in marriage)
He is, of course completely oblivious until his sister, Cleo kind of punches the topic to his face. Grian at the same time realizes his feelings for Scar
-🦢
Cleo was watching with vague amusement for a while, but seeing both the god and Grian fumble and fluster like crazy was really funny to watch, it definitely made up for them awkwardly staring at each other, each one being too afraid to say something

#Inktober 11: Wander This drawing from #InktobersPast feels appropriate for Wander. In Finnish mythology Otso is the collective animistic spirit of all bears. Early hunter-gatherers respected the bear as an ancestor & their hibernation helped them track the seasons.

Otso is a bear spirit in Finnish mythology. It goes by many names, including Ohto, Kontio and Mesikämmen. It is kalso called friend, brother and uncle, and is sometimes said to be a relative who fled the community and was transformed into a bear in the wilderness.
Bears are important in Finnish mythology, with tradition stating that if a bear must be killed, its skull is to be kept in a sacred clearing and brought offerings.

Otso, the lord of woods.
He slumbers in the deepest parts of the untouched forests, only waking every hundred moons to trade wisdom with the people who dare face the challenges to meet him.
A secret for a secret, to learn and to grow.
Knowledge is a tool, we all wish to know.
Based on the bear in finnish mythology with added creative interpertation.

The Otso [Finnish mythology]
The word ‘Otso’ is actually more of a euphemism or title for this creature, as this spirit from Finnish mythology was never given an actual name. It is sometimes called ‘Metsän Kuningas’ or ‘the king of the forest’ and was generally held in high regard. Otso is primarily known as a bear spirit, or a forest spirit with some connection to bears. When a bear was killed, a large memorial feast (Peijainen) was held to commemorate the beast and to show respect to Otso. The skull of the bear was also kept as a kind of shrine.
Some tales claim that the Otso is not a type of spirit, but a human who abandoned civilization and went to live in the forest. Since deep forests were thought to have mystical powers in ancient Finnish tradition, these hermits eventually transformed into bears, and that is where the Otso come from.

NAME: Otso
RARITY: ★★★☆☆
THREAT LEVEL: ★★☆☆☆ | Strong and spectral, but can be placated or weakened with salt or iron.
ORIGIN: An otso is a bear spirit in Finnish mythology, and is sometimes represented as a sacred woodland spirit or someone who ran away from civilization and was transformed into a bear in the wilderness. The veneration of otso was connected to a Finnish tradition of bear skulls being kept in sacred clearings and brought offerings.
DESCRIPTION: Taking the form of a giant, ethereal bear, an otso is an ursine spirit that is bound to a bear skull. While many spectres are associated with haunted houses or abandoned buildings, otso only form in wild places, such as groves, natural caves, and woodland springs. They can form in a variety of manners -- from mundane bears, the spirits of deceased bugbears, or occasionally from humans who completely reject civilization and are transformed into an ursine spirit on death. While otso are sometimes misunderstood as “good” or “protector” spirits, they can be quite dangerous.
The material vessel of an otso is always a large bear skull. The natural area around the skull is infused with natural magic that fills local plants and animals with lifegiving vitality. This leads magical varieties of flora to often be found in the vicinity. Unfortunately, this makes it more likely that otso will maul foraging herbalists or people desperate for rare cures.
ABILITIES: An otso manifests when intruders enter the skull’s haunted area. The spirit is capable of physical harm despite its ghostly appearance, and will continue to attack trespassers as long as they remain in the skull’s vicinity. The intrusion of civilization, such as vehicles or nearby construction, sends an otso spirit into a berserk murderous fury. They can cause considerable physical damage. Weapons that aren’t composed of iron or salt pass right through them. Otso are aware of everything that happens in a wide radius around their skull, and can use natural magic to cause plants in the area to snare or otherwise harm intruders.
WEAKNESS: Because they are magically bound to the skull, they can’t go very far from it, and will stop pursuing intruders that leave the area. Iron weapons or salt rounds harm otso as if they were physical beings. If defeated in this way, an otso goes dormant and must wait before manifesting again, sometimes for years. Completely destroying an otso’s skull vessel will banish the spirit for good. Certain offerings (typically of things living bears eat in the wild) will calm an otso and allow temporary safe passage into the area it guards, provided the visitor shows proper respect to its home.
NOTES: Bugbears are not harmed by otso and can wordlessly communicate with them. Many traditionalist bugbears see otso as sacred, or at least culturally significant. They sometimes bury their dead around an otso and a particularly old otso may have a number of other bugbear spirits protecting it.

this is not a drill, all my main original characters have names!
the protagonist is called ruska, they're a nonbinary lesbian dwelf. ruska means the phenomenon when leaves change color during fall
their dads are called kajo (elf, gay) and otso (dwarf, gay and trans). kajo means shimmer or gleam, and otso is another word for bear (the official finnish word for bear is karhu)
ruska's friends are solveig (a sage, acearo), nikolai (nicknamed niko, a human, bi), and pekko (deity of barley and ale, gay). I picked solveig and nikolai mainly because I liked them, no deeper meaning. pekko was something I found when I researched finnish mythology (though he's never stated to be gay, that's just me)
and I thought ruska's love interest would be tellervo, maiden of the forest, daughter of forest god tapio

Mesikämmen, “old honey paws”, Otso, Ohto, Kontio...the Great Bear goes by many names. He is revered by the dwarves and all people of the northern lands, and paid respect where bears make their home. He loves mead, honey, and the sport of combat...and don’t mess with his clan. He’s been part of the lore of the Runa universe for a while, and our weekly DnD group is currently entangled with him. The blue-white belt is the hat tip to his and my own Finnish background. . . . #mesikämen #greatbear #bear #king #otso #kontio #honeypaws #honey #mead #combat #fantasy #art #Finnish #mythology #Runa #Jeminar #adventure #art #fantasy #Finland #heritage #mythopoeia #DnD #5e #character #characterdesign #color #digital #ink https://www.instagram.com/p/Bq2p5r8Adlw/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=3aemhffld2eb
