Panel one has a view into Kakashi's bedroom from just outside the open window. We look over the bed where Tenzō's Anbu mask is resting and past the flapping curtain, and see the spot where Kakashi and Tenzō are sitting. Tenzō, still crouched by the side of Kakashi's bed, is mostly hidden aside from the top of his head. Kakashi is sitting with a loose, tired posture, looking wryly out the open window. "And then you came to my apartment, " Kakashi says. "Maybe it felt safe and secluded enough to have your breakdown in. Which is flattering, but to be fair, my wards are usually immaculate."
The second panel, they are sitting, knees touching knees, facing each other. Kakashi's eyes are closed, like he's trying to force a smile, but not succeeding very well. He has one arm wrapped around himself. Tenzō is leaning forward towards Kakashi, eyebrows low over his eyes. "But I didn't plan—I didn't choose to do this, to feel this," Tenzō argues. "Who would?" Kakashi asks. He continues, "The only drawback of having trust, of having a place to be vulnerable, is that sometimes you'll have to be vulnerable in it, I guess. Hurts, huh?"

#my art#naruto#comics#yamato#tenzō#yamato tenzo#kakashi#im sooo pleased with the top panel. but i hate the second panel so much. the duality of a single comic page#in trying to remove himself from the subject hes speaking about (repression) kakashi uses very definite second person speech#even though he throws the word ''maybe'' or ''perhaps'' in there to indicate that he doesn't know tenzō's internal workings#to tenzō it sounds very much like ''you did this because you probably felt this. you did this about that..''#and tenzō is very much like ''I. NOT INTENTIONALLY? I PROMISE I DIDN'T PLAN THIS!''#tenzō feels like he's being assigned a greater agency than he felt. is i guess what im saying#if kakashi instead talked abt a situation where he acted similarly to tenzō its possible this might have given tenzō an opportunity#to understand his behavior through comparing it to kakashis. recognition of self through the other or w/e. BUT.#kakashis not a mental healthcare professional. hes ALSO just a traumatized kid. with bad coping mechanisms. trying his best.#tenzō is 13 here so kakashi is probably around 16#thats part of why i draw him as or mention thruout this comic that hes getting frustrated or uncomfortable#hes a kid! hes not good at this! he's just Unfortunately tenzō's best option for support at the moment. literally its either Kakashi#or going to the Hokage like ''hi Hiruzen I have concerns that I might be a danger and a threat to your village.''#''do you want me executed or banished? Really I insist it's your choice Hokage-sama. I'm really not picky."

The Fall of a King
Sakura had always had a mind keen enough for long games, so that’s why Naruto never saw her coming.
With all the love in her heart for her friend, Sakura could still admit the honest truth; that he hadn’t been a strong Hokage despite his prowess as a shinobi. The two jobs were too inherently and fundamentally different from one another, it was unfair to believe that the strongest fighter would make the wisest military strategist or diplomat.
Of course the hokage would have assistants who could fill in those gaps for them, Shikamaru was enough of a strategist and Naruto had plenty of others who would go off to sooth relations with the other villages to the best of their abilities, but at the end of the day everything fell on the shoulders of the hokage, and it was their decision to listen to such advisors and assistants.
What would happen if their foolish, hopeful, bright hokage didn’t believe in the grim truths of his expert advisors? What would happen if those expert advisors were ignored too many times? What if the hokage made decisions no one approved of for the sake of some groundless belief? What if, instead of honoring the sacrifice of his fallen allies, he made peace with their abusers and perpetuated the cycle?
Sakura was staring at two such answers in the privet office of her hospital, secured with only the best privacy protecting jutsu to ensure any patient’s medical condition stay between them and their doctor.
“Why do you think I would have something to do with it?” Sakura asked, casual as ever while Shikamaru and Yamato sat in seats across from her.
“Hn, you’re really good at lying,” Shikamaru sighed, fingers twitching for a cigarette. She had already swatted the first one out of his hands and deposited it atop her desk. Every so often she would casually roll it with her forefinger, watching the chief strategist for his reaction.
“Can a person lie when asking a question? I don’t believe I made an inaccurate statement.”
“This campaign of his will lose him political favor with the vast majority of the general public,” Shikamaru said without any concern in his voice. “You know him better than most.”
“Then you know there is no controlling Naruto. He’s never been one for listening to authority and it should be clear to you by now how much he respects me as anything other than a teammate.” Sakura pushed the cigarette up with her finger and then rolled it back, grinning at how Shikamaru’s eyes fixated on it. “You’re his advisor, Shikamaru, shouldn’t you be the one in charge of swaying him from this folly?”
When Shikamaru didn’t respond Sakura picked up the cigarette and turned it over in her fingers, careful to keep it where he could see it. Her eyes cut to Yamato, silent for all but his initial greeting. He had been quiet often, speaking less and less as he was forced to monitor his childhood abuser from afar on Naruto’s orders. More than once Sakura had urged him to seek some help with the mental anguish he was so clearly laboring under, but she might as well have been talking to a brick wall. She was curious why he was in her office now.
It had been a couple of months since they last talked, right after Sarutobi Hiruzen’s memorial day. To hear Naruto talk about the old man you’d think the third hokage never did anything wrong in his life. And true, to speak ill of the dead was in poor taste, but it was a choice to memorialize the old man and erect statues and name parks after him. It was hard to stomach this year after Sakura had started to see some of Hiruzen’s worst traits in his predecessor.
For Hiruzen it had been his blindspot for Danzo that led to the bloody Root- something Tsunade had lobbied and petitioned against. All her efforts to bring Danzo’s misdeeds to the public were shut down, even years later when they came up for review. Sakura had submitted the same proposal for the last four years to no effect. Neither Kakashi nor Naruto seemed keen on the idea of airing out dirty laundry for ‘no one’s’ benefit. For a while Sakura thought that was the most divisive issue between her and her old teammate, but that was before the Hyuga started showing up at her hospital in the darkness before sunrise.
“Tenzin,” she called, provoking Yamato for a reaction. It had been a while since someone last called him by his old name. Naruto instead on Yamato because that’s what he knew first. “Were you able to help the songbirds?”
He swallowed before nodding. “Only as much as you advised. Their seals are still in place but no longer mitigating their daily life like before.”
Shikamaru grimaced, looking between the two of them. “You didn’t tell me you had already spoken.”
“I only said we should speak to her,” Yamato cooly replied. “But you already knew we had talked.”
“You didn’t seem receptive to anything she said so I doubted your actual involvement,” Shikamaru admitted. “But it seems I miscalculated once more.”
“You thought either of us would stay still after learning what you already knew about Naruto’s dealings with the Hyuga?” Sakura scoffed. “Really?”
“In the absence of the Uchiha clan the Hyuga are arguably our strongest ally so it wasn’t necessary for me to pry into their business so deeply.”
Sakura almost snapped his cigarette between her fingers. “I’m tempted to throw you out right now for being such a placating coward. You’re smarter than that, you just didn’t want to look too deeply into the dark or thought yourself above it because it wasn’t you who was wooing the Hyuga heiress.”
Shikamaru forced his eyes up, though Sakura could tell it required some effort. “I’m here now.”
“Then,” interjected Yamato, “Are you ready to hear what we want to stop?”
“Even if you have a good idea you deserve to see it spelled out for you,” Sakura added.
The Nara clan head nodded, squaring his shoulders.
Without breaking eye contact or setting aside the cigarette between her fingers, Sakura reached underneath her desk and pulled out a file. It split open upon impacting the desk and showed off a number of reports and diagrams of the human body. Then there were the pages with jutsu spells and variations of the ‘Caged Bird’ seal Sakura had taken note of. Beneath those were mortuary reports.
“In Orochimaru’s absence his sadistic traditions seems to have been inherited by the most powerful noble clan in our village. Conveniently, our hokage is willing to overlook this,” Sakura leaned back and snapped her fingers in front of the cigarette she had placed between her lips, lighting it. Over the smoke she locked eyes with Shikamaru. “But I’m not.”
“Is that why you baited him into a game of chicken with the daimyo?” Shikamaru asked, meeting her eyes between the smoke. “A game you know he can’t win?”
Sakura exhaled a long stream, purifying her lungs with cycled chakra as she did so. “It’s about time someone broke this damn cycle, don’t you think so?"

Can you do Itachi,Tobirama,Tsunade,Shisui and Pein with a darling from the modern world but they don’t know that their from the modern and the darling is talking about random stuff from the modern world (like spongebob or something)and they don’t know what the darling is talking about?I hope this makes sense
It makes sense, don’t worry.
Tw: Yandere themes, unhealthy mindset, unhealthy relationship, possessiveness, obsessiveness, paranoia, kidnapping, sabotage, controlling behavior, harsh behavior, threatening
What are you talking about?
Tobirama Senju
Tumblr media
🌊Tobirama gets incredibly irritated by stuff like this. He himself is more the type to only say what he needs to say and he doesn’t really talk about unnecessary things. So having his darling talking sometimes about things where he really has no idea what they’re talking about confuses him greatly, but before he can even start complaining, they always shut up quickly as if realizing that they said something they shouldn’t have said.
🌊It’s painfully suspicious and Tobirama is smart so at the beginning he honestly thought his darling was a bit weird. But their behavior somewhat tells him they keep something secret and since their backstory couldn’t be proved by anyone since they one day just popped up mysteriously, he starts connecting those two dots rather quickly and confronts you about it. He has to know where you’re coming from, if it’s a rival village he would have a problem and just ends up demanding the truth. Show some gratitude since he helped you with everything in here. You owe him.
🌊He’s dumbfounded the moment you tell him where you’re really from and to be frank, he won’t believe you either at first because whilst he has seen and heard some crazy things, this really is cut above the rest. He kind of gets a bit more forceful with them afterwards since he at first just assumed that they lied to him. It of course wouldn’t take long until he starts thinking you might tell the truth given your sudden appearance and the fact that he doesn’t think you lie, but you might speed the process up if you have your mobile or just tell him things you know about his past. It leads him to becoming more protective since he fears if someone finds out, they’ll try to come after you and the future you know. So it’ll be kept a secret, the only people who would find out are Hashirama and Mito and you can talk with his brother nonsense all you want.
Tsunade Senju
Tumblr media
🐌She lets it slide more than just once, simply because she adores her darling a lot and loves listening to them. She does realize that she has no plan what they’re saying, but as long as she doesn’t suspect that this has to do with some mental health issues, she wouldn’t say anything and just smile. So maybe Shizune would start talking with her about it for two reasons. First of all because some people started talking about it and second of all because you always change topics if she tries to talk with you about it.
🐌Tsunade probably realized that too and that’s when she starts worrying a bit more about this strange behavior of her darling. It leads her to becoming more observing since she is a legendary medic and has experience with all possible kinds of problems, physically as well as mentally. You seem to appear fine, but the more you start talking about such stuff before quickly shutting your mouth and refusing to answer when she asks worried a question, the more she becomes concerned about it.
🐌She can be rough, but for you she’s just a sweetheart and is sincerely concerned about you, now understand that you keep something from her which seems to somewhat torture you. She just wants to help you and she somewhat suspects that it has to do with your past since one day her Shino be found you tumbling through the forest. She’s seen how people can get affected by their past and she herself used to be very much pained by it so she thinks that your past has affected you somehow too. You might just tell her willingly since she just wishes to help you anyway she can. She has troubles believing you at first as well, though she would be more disappointed than angry. But she would also be easier to convince, especially if you mention some things from the past which you can’t possibly know or show you the mobile you’ve hidden. That’s when she believes you as well. Similar to Tobirama, she would keep it a secret out of fear people might try to kidnap you due to what you know. But she also has a couple of people she trusts which she would let in on that secret.
Pain
Tumblr media
🌧Personally feel like in most cases his darling would be too anxious to really talk to him, especially about such stuff. It can't be argued that Pain is daunting, be that because he wants to scare his darling or not. It's just how he is and whilst he does sometimes gets annoyed with it, especially if he just wants to have a nice time with you, he also can't really blame you because he knows what he did wasn't exactly the right thing to do. But he did it because he wanted to protect you so most of the times he's more indifferent about it.
🌧It might be Konan who heard it since she's easier to talk to from the limited amount of people you have in this tower and she most likely was the one who told Pain about it since she cares for his darling as well. They're close to her as well. She kind of worries at first that the whole kidnapping and isolating made you start hallucinate things to escape reality. It worries Pain as well a bit and he tries to talk to you as well to hear it from you personally. But if you can't because you're too frightened he asks Konan to keep an eye on you and keep him informed.
🌧It's actually kind of surprising that he doesn't know from where you are since he is pretty controlling and would also want to know your past so he can use people you love against you or punish those who harmed you. But if both find out that this has to do with something else, Pain definitely becomes more involved because he doesn't have any knowledge about your past. You just walked one day into his village and he already asked you a couple of times from where you are with you refusing to answer. It makes him lose patience because there are only that many times he asks without using his Rinnegan on you. In all honesty, he wouldn't have too huge of a reaction to all of this. He pretty much only cares that his darling is trapped in the tower and doesn't escape. If they don't have any sort of threat, he doesn't care. At the very least he knows now that they're talking about stuff from their world since they have no one else to talk to and Konan convinces him to just listen to you when you start talking about stuff again. If he just appears to be interested, which he is slightly, he might be able to somehow bond with you by just hearing when you explain things from your world to him.
Shisui Uchiha
Tumblr media
🍂He would suspect the most earliest on that this has to do with his darling's past and from where they're coming from simply because he was the one who found his darling on a mission in the first place, completely and utterly confused. He managed to convince the Hokage to let them live in the village since they didn't seem to have any other place to go to, but was also ordered to watch over them since their loyalties were still unknown. They didn't seem to want to tell either, but also didn't seem like they would make troubles which was why they haven't been interrogated from the Yamanaka's so far.
🍂So instead of hearing it personally from you, he heard it all whilst stalking you because you were having a conversation with yourself, complaining about the situation and saying stuff like "not believing to be in the Anime" or "why you had been transported in this world". Whilst he was at first definitely confused, he also managed to make a connection rather quickly and isn't above searching in your room for some evidence when you aren't home and if he manages to find something, a mobile or something from the modern world, he's bound to find out sooner than later.
🍂He has to inform the Hokage, it's his duty to do so. And Hiruzen will have afterwards a talk to you about it and it's honestly just easier to tell him since he's very friendly with you. You just want to go back to your world, right? The Third Hokage would be ready to help you whilst keeping it a secret in the meantime, especially from Danzo. Shisui will continue being somewhat of a guardian for you, the difference now is that he can approach you and he confesses that he was the one who stalked you and told the Hokage, but hopes now to start new with you. He keeps the obsession he has with you of course a secret and focuses rather on becoming your friend and later on something more. Whilst he of course respects that you probably don't want to tell him everything, he still is curious about how your world works and since him and the Hokage are pretty much the only people you can talk too, you're bound to talk with him about it often since there's no one else.
Itachi Uchiha
Tumblr media
🍡He happened to find his darling one day in the forests and was literally the one who helped them after meeting them in the forests, thinking they were somewhat of a rogue too who had left their village. He's a criminal, sure. But he's a pacifist at heart and just wanted to help you at that time, leading you to the next village and making sure that you were welcomed and taken temporarily in. After that he decided to stay a bit and watch over you until he would be sure that you would stay in the village since he felt like he had to make sure you would live a fine life. He had after all be the one who had brought you here, though you hadn't told anyone since you knew what might happen and because he had told you so as well.
🍡So similar to Shisui he heard you talking about this more questionable stuff whilst watching over you. It made him worry slightly because he had gotten over time fond over you whilst stalking you. As I said multiple times before, Itachi needs time until he forms an obsession with someone and feel like he would decide to stay longer to find out what is up with all this weird talking of yours because he's just genuinely concerned about you.
🍡He feels ashamed the moment he notices his darker feelings and the urging desire to kidnap you since he feels like you aren't safe anymore. He was the one who wanted you to be safe in the first place and live a normal life which is why he brought you here. And now he thinks about stuff like this which is quite shameful. He ends up abducting you one or another way, no matter how much he tries to let you go. So he most likely found out after he did it since he did ask you about what you sometimes talked about, though not forcing you to tell him. But he's the only person you can talk too so at one point you might be just bound to tell him since having no one to speak to is frustrating. He would react rather calm to it, he isn't someone to react dramatically, though you still have to somehow prove it to him.

Let Me Prove Myself
AU: Team Runaway Au (Rin lives)
Words: 1176
Rating: General
Characters: Hatake Kakashi, Aburame Shibi, Saratobi Hiruzen.
Warnings: None
Summary: Kakashi finds himself arguing for a change in the roster for his mission, and receives support from an unexpected source.
Completed with help from @spellcasterlight
The Mission parameters were simple. Lead a small three-man team into the Land of earth, locate the undercover operative, retrieve the scroll, and get out without being caught. Already Kakashi had a plan in mind, the only problem was that the people he was being given for his mission didn’t match up.
“Gai and Rin would be a better team for me, Lord Third,” he argued, determined to stand his ground and win this argument. “Rin is the best trapper I know. She’ll make sure that no one interrupts us while we’re retrieving the scroll. And if something does go wrong Gai and I are the best team to deal with the problem.”
No one else fits. They didn’t have the teamwork that he had built up with Rin and Gai over the years or the skills that he needed to pull this mission off as quickly and effectively as possible.
In fact, the people that the Hokage had chosen for him were some of the worst he could have possibly picked. This mission didn’t call for an Inuzuka or an Akimichi. They were better suited for other missions that called for their specific talents.
“I’ve given you your team, Kakashi,” Lord Third asserted. “It’s not up for debate.”
“Every other Jonin gets to change up their teams if they think that they can do a mission better with someone else,” Digging his heels in, Kakashi continued to argue. Determined to get the team switches that he wanted. “I’m telling you that I can do this mission better if you allow me to take Rin and Gai. Their skills are better suited for the mission and My plan would go smoother with them.”
Not that he couldn’t make a plan that would work with the teammates he had been given. It just wouldn’t be as effective. He’d have to make changes that could compromise the mission, which wasn’t worth the risk in his mind. Rin and Gai were both in the village available for a mission, so there was no excuse to refuse his request to switch the team up to better suit his plan.
“I don’t see why you’re complaining so much,” Koharu-sama spoke up, her voice dripping with displeasure. “The fact that you’re being given missions to lead at all after your failure at Kannabi bridge is kindness from Lord Third. Even with your above-average skills, you’re not ready to be a Jonin leader, especially if you’re going to question the Hokage’s orders.”
Two years.
It had been two years since the Kannabi bridge incident. Since Obito’s death.
Yet he was still paying the price for the failure. Being reminded of it at every opportunity, no matter how many missions he successfully completed.
“A little harsh, don’t you think Koharu-sama?” Hearing a supportive voice directly behind him, Kakashi turned his head to see who it was, his eyes widening when he saw none other than Shibi-San standing there with a mission report in hand and a cool calm air hovering around him. “There’s not a single Jonin in the village that has not failed a mission. Everyone has a record of their failures, whether it’s because the enemy happened to be quicker and stronger, or something unexpected happened causing the mission to go south.”
Staring up at the older man, Kakashi instantly turned his eyes away when Shibi-san met his gaze. It was weird. He had never felt like he needed to avoid meeting someone’s eyes before.
Like he would be overwhelmed just by knowing that they were looking at him.
And this feeling in his chest, why was it so warm?
“If you’re going to judge Kakashi based on his first failure, surely you’ll do the same to every Jonin in Konoha,” seeing a beetle flying in front of his face, Kakashi couldn’t help but hold out a finger for it to land on, a small smile tugging at his lips when it decided to take his offering. “Might I suggest starting with myself? I have quite the collection of failed missions under my name.”
For a second it looked like Koharu-sama was going to argue further, but instead, she leaned back into her chair and looked over at Lord Third. It was his turn to take over the conversation, now that Shibi-san had shut down her insults.
“Regardless of Kakashi’s accomplishments and failures.” the Hokage started, a sound of disapproval escaping his throat when Shibi held up a hand to silence him.
“Regardless of anything brought up in this discussion, Kakashi is correct in mentioning that all Jonin are allowed to change the team they are given for a mission if they believe that different Shinobi would be more effective,” Shibi-san continued, his eyes focused on Lord Third. “Unless you already have missions planned for the Shinobi he is requesting, or they are already out on missions of their own, there is no reason to deny Kakashi his switches. Regardless of the failure that Koharu-sama has mentioned, Hatake Kakashi has proven himself time and again to be a skilled tactician. Capable of coming up with mission plans more effective than those of people twice his age. If he is convinced that his mission will go smoother with certain Shinobi by his side, I believe that it would be best to provide him with those Shinobi if possible.”
Lowering his hand, Kakashi watched the Hokage carefully. Just waiting for him to shut down Shibi-san’s argument and tell him to butt out of something that wasn’t any of his concern.
That moment never came though.
Instead, Lord Third glanced down at the mission scroll that Kakashi had handed back to him with his requested changes and sighed.
“Retrieve Maito Gai and Nohara Rin for your mission,” he instructed, leveling cold eyes on Kakashi. “I expect you to update them on the mission on the way, as time is limited to complete it.”
“I…” Kakashi was shocked, to say the least. Shibi-san had managed to change Lord Thirds’ mind? To get Kakashi the requested changes to his mission?
Giving his head a shake, Kakashi straighten himself up and watched as the beetle that had been resting on his finger flew off back towards Shibi-san. “Yes, Lord Third,” His mind was already racing. He’d have to find Rin and Gai fast and get moving right away. There would be no time to mess around, but it was worth it. He had no doubt the mission would go smoother with those two by his side. “If I may…”
Rolling the scroll up once again, Lord Third held it out towards Kakashi.
“I expect you to come back with news of a successful mission,” he states, a smile plastered on his face. Though Kakashi didn’t feel like he was as pleased with the situation as he was making himself seem. “You’re dismissed.”
One quick look towards Shibi-san, as silent ‘thank you’ in his visible eye, and he was gone in a puff of smoke. Off to find his friends so they could head out on their new mission.

Solution (Iruka x Kakashi)
Rating: T
Summary: In which Konoha's laws are the problem, and Kakashi and Iruka just might be each other's solution.
A/N: Written for KakaIru Month ( @kakairu-fest ) Day 24 Prompt: Fake Dating (although this fic is more of a pretend relationship/marraige of convenience flavor)
ao3 link
Iruka downs his cup of sake in one gulp and winces, feeling the sweet, sticky liquid burn his throat. When he asks for another cup, the bartender gives him a concerned look but doesn’t say anything, and a bitter smile curls Iruka’s lips. He knows he must be a pitiful sight – it’s way too early on a Friday afternoon to be this drunk – yet, he can hardly find it in him to care.
It was supposed to be a great day – how did everything go so wrong?
Earlier that day, Iruka had a meeting with Hokage, during which he was going to tell Hiruzen that he wanted to adopt Naruto. If someone had told him just a year ago that he, a new Academy teacher who has just turned eighteen, would be adopting a child, Iruka would have laughed at them, but life has a way of surprising people.
When he first saw how lonely Naruto is, despite his friendly nature and his sun-bright smile, Iruka’s heart clenched, and he had to reach out to the boy. Becoming friends with Naruto was surprisingly easy and, before Iruka even noticed, their friendship blossomed into an almost familial bond.
He vividly remembered the evening Naruto fell asleep on his couch while watching a movie. Iruka couldn’t help but smile as he picked him up to carry him to a futon that he’d set up in a spare room. In recent weeks, Naruto stayed at his apartment quite frequently, and Iruka suspected it was because he hated living alone. As Iruka carried him down the corridor, Naruto mumbled something sleepily.
“What are you saying, Naruto?” Iruka asked softly.
“So warm and safe,” Naruto murmured, “I wonder if that’s what it feels like when a father holds you?”
Iruka felt a lump in his throat as he looked down at the boy. He, at least, had memories of his parents to hold on to, but Naruto had been an orphan since birth. How must it be for him, never to have felt familiar love?
Iruka couldn’t sleep all night, haunted by the thought. While there was nothing he could do to bring Naruto’s parents back, there still was something he could do for him. When the morning came, and he and Naruto settled at the kitchen table for breakfast, Iruka asked, “Naruto, would you like me to adopt you?”
The next thing Iruka knew, Naruto flung himself at him, squeezing Iruka in a tight hug.
“Of course, I would, Iruka-sensei,” he said, smiling brightly, “You better believe it!”
And so, the decision was made.
Iruka had no doubt that all will go well, and he’ll get custody of Naruto – until he had the meeting with Hiruzen.
They were having tea on the balcony of the Hokage tower – as they often did during their meetings - when Iruka said, “I want to adopt Naruto.”
“Oh?” Hiruzen tilted his head to the side, looking at Iruka with a curious expression, “I suppose congratulations are in order then. Though I must say, I’m a little surprised – you never mentioned you were…involved with anyone.”
“Involved?” Iruka repeated, confused.
“Yes,” Hiruzen nodded, taking a sip of his tea, “As you know, only married couples can adopt children in Konoha – after all, it’s much better for children to grow up in full families. So tell me, who is it you are marrying?”
Iruka felt color drain from his face – he has never heard of such a requirement. Before he could say anything, however, an ANBU flickered in front of them.
“Hokage-sama, your presence is required urgently…”
Iruka had never been more grateful for an interruption of his meeting with Hiruzen.
Now, sitting at the bar, Iruka cannot help but feel angry and bitter. The adoption rule is arbitrary and utterly ridiculous - and isn’t it better for the orphans to have at least some family than no family at all? Iruka has no idea how he will tell Naruto the truth, and the image of Naruto’s distraught face breaks his heart. Before he starts crying, Iruka downs another cup of sake.
“Rough day, Iruka-sensei?” says a familiar voice.
Startled, Iruka glances to his right to see none other than Kakashi Hatake, sitting on a barstool next to him. If Iruka was a little more sober, he would have felt guilty about not greeting Kakashi earlier – and about the number of empty cups before him - but he’s drunk. So drunk, in fact, that he somehow missed Kakashi’s arrival.
“Like you wouldn’t believe it,” he mutters.
The bartender arrives, placing three shot glasses in front of Kakashi. Iruka stares, mesmerized, as Kakashi empties all three glasses so quick that it seems he never takes off his mask.
“It looks like you had a rough day too,” Iruka remarks then, “Tough mission.”
“I’ll tell you my grievances if you tell me yours,” Kakashi says wryly.
They aren’t close, not at all – Kakashi had given him advice on approaching Naruto once, and, outside of that, they’ve only spoken briefly during Iruka’s shifts at the mission desk. Kakashi is not the person Iruka normally shares his problems with, but alcohol does a wondrous job at loosening people’s tongues.
“Did you know that to adopt a child in this village, you need to be married?” he says, with a sigh, “Well, I didn’t, but apparently that’s the rule. Which, I think is very stupid – there are so many orphans here, wouldn’t it be better for them to have at least one loving parent rather than no parents at all?”
Kakashi stares at him intently but remains quiet, so Iruka continues.
“But no, apparently only “full families” count, so now I have to go tell Naruto that I cannot adopt him because I’m not married. And, mind you, I care for the boy so much, I would have gotten married if I was seeing someone – but between the work at the Academy, shifts at the Mission desk, and missions, what time do I have to date? If only…” realizing that he’s rambling, Iruka stops abruptly.
Even though his drunken haze, he feels a little embarrassed. Kakashi is lending him a sympathetic ear, and instead of talking about his real problem – the fact that he could not adopt Naruto – he started rambling about his lack of a dating life.
Kakashi remains quiet, looking at Iruka pensively. As silence stretches, Iruka shifts uncomfortably in his seat.
“So,” Iruka smiles awkwardly, “I’ve told you my troubles – now it’s your turn.”
“I… don’t really believe in fate, sensei, but I must say, this is quite the coincidence,” Kakashi finally says.
“What do you mean?” Iruka frowns.
“You see, the reason that I’m here, drowning my sorrows, is because I’ve had the exact same conversation with the Hokage earlier today,” Kakashi explains, “Only, I was speaking to him about Sasuke Uchiha.”
Iruka feels a lump in his throat at Kakashi’s words. Sasuke… He still hasn’t been released from the hospital after what happened to his family. As his homeroom teacher, Iruka went to visit Sasuke a few times and could hardly bear the empty, dejected look on the boy’s face.
Still, Kakashi’s revelation surprises Iruka.
“I didn’t know you were close to his family,” Iruka says, meeting Kakashi’s gaze.
“I wasn’t,” Kakashi admits, “Or, at least, not with his parents. But I think I owe it to him – if I had only noticed that Itachi…”
Kakashi stops himself, but Iruka can guess the rest. Though officially, the identities of the ANBU operatives were a secret, in reality, it wasn’t difficult to put two and two together. There was hardly a shinobi in the village who didn’t know that Kakashi and Itachi were both in the ANBU. Perhaps, they were on the same team…
Before Iruka can say anything, the bartender comes by again, placing two cups of sake before Kakashi. Next thing he knows, Kakashi’s sliding one cup towards him. Liquid sloshes over the edge of the cup as Iruka catches it, and, when he absent-mindedly lifts his fingers to his lips to lick sake from them, he notices something shift in Kakashi’s gaze and feels shivers run up his spine.
“I think we can help each other,” Kakashi says, his voice a little hoarse.
“How so?” Iruka asks.
“We could get married,” Kakashi shrugs nonchalantly.
Iruka nearly chokes on his drink.
“What?” is all he could manage.
“It’s only logical,” Kakashi continues, “You want to adopt Naruto, I want to adopt Sasuke, the only thing standing in the way is the marriage requirement. If we get married, that problem will be solved.”
Iruka stares at Kakashi, utterly dumbfounded, uncertain where to start. Sure, when Kakashi puts it like that, in theory, it might make sense for them to get married, but in reality…
“Kakashi-san,” Iruka says slowly, “With all due respect – we barely know each other. Do you think it would be wise for us to get married?”
“You said you wouldn’t mind getting married if that meant you could adopt Naruto,” Kakashi replies, leaning his elbows on the bar and resting his chin on his palm.
“I said I wouldn’t mind getting married if I was seeing someone,” Iruka says pointedly.
“But you aren’t,” Kakashi’s eye curves, and Iruka can tell that he’s smiling under the mask, “So, it seems, this is the next best thing.”
Iruka wasn’t much of a romantic – shinobi life quickly disabuses anyone of such delusions – and still, he couldn’t fathom getting married to a man he hardly knew. But, in his drunken haze, Kakashi’s arguments almost made sense. If this lets him adopt Naruto, maybe it’s worth it…
“Perhaps, you are right,” Iruka laughs, then shakes his head, “I have heard that you, the jounin, are crazy, but you must be the craziest of all. What normal person would propose to a man he barely knows?”
“I know you are a Konoha shinobi through and through, responsible and good with children,” Kakashi shrugs, emptying his drink in one swift motion, “And that’s enough for me.”
Iruka can hardly stop himself from rolling his eyes.
“I’d also think someone like you would have other options,” he adds.
“What do you mean?” Kakashi frowns.
Iruka sighs. <em>He cannot possibly be that oblivious. </em>
“Well, Kakashi-san,” Iruka says in a tone in which he usually explains things to his youngest students, “You are the famous copy-ninja. I’d expect there to be a line all the way to the village’s gate if you were to say that you were looking for someone to marry.”
Kakashi laughs then – and it’s the first time Iruka hears the sound and, somehow, he cannot help but smile.
“Sorry to disappoint, Iruka-sensei, but the reality hardly matches your expectations,” Kakashi murmurs, then shifts a little closer and adds, “So, do you accept my proposal?”
Iruka looks at Kakashi for a moment, wondering what he’s getting himself into, then, emboldened by the liquid courage running through his veins, says, “Fine.”
“See, I knew you’d come around,” Kakashi smiles.
A million thoughts run through Iruka’s mind – there are so many things they need to discuss. Where will they live? His apartment certainly isn’t big enough for four people, and he has no idea about Kakashi’s own living arrangements. How will they tell Naruto and Sasuke, and when should they tell them? What does Kakashi <em>expect</em> out of this marriage?
But, before Iruka can say a single word, Kakashi glances at the clock and gets up from his seat.
“Time to go,” he says.
“Go where?” Iruka asks, confused.
“To the civil registrar’s office, of course,” Kakashi replies, “It’s half past four, so we have about half an hour, which should be enough time to get married. Otherwise, we’ll have to wait till Monday, and I have a bad feeling that I’ll get sent on a mission before then. So, both the marriage and the adoption will need to happen today.”
“Shouldn’t we tell Naruto and Sasuke first?” Iruka protests but still gets up from his seat.
“No time for that now,” Kakashi shakes his head, “Besides, what’s the issue? You <em>did</em> agree.” “I didn’t think we were going to do this today,” Iruka says weakly.
His head is spinning from all the sake, so he grasps at the bar to steady himself.
“A shinobi must always be prepared for the unexpected,” Kakashi sounds amused as he cites the rules at him, “And what better time than now?”
Before Iruka could protest, Kakashi wraps his arm around his waist, pulling him closer.
“What are you doing?” Iruka almost hisses, embarrassed at the warmth that floods his body on the contact.
“There is no time to walk, so I’m going to flicker us,” Kakashi says, quickly forming a seal with one hand, “Now hold on.”
*
“You want to get married now?” the chunin at the registration office seems equal parts annoyed and unimpressed.
Iruka knows the look all too well – it’s the look of someone who’s been hoping to leave the office ten minutes early all day and now has a sudden influx of work, right at the close.
“Well, you know how it is,” Kakashi says, unaffected, “True love can’t wait. Right, Iruka?”
The sudden familiarity of his tone, combined with the way Kakashi reaches out and pulls Iruka against his side, makes heat rise in Iruka’s cheeks.
“Right…Kakashi,” Iruka replies. The name without the honorific feels strange on his tongue, but Iruka knows he’ll have to get used to it.
The chunin stares at them for a moment, then sighs and walks over to her desk to fill out the necessary forms. To Iruka’s surprise, Kakashi doesn’t let go of him while she works.
“Sign here,” the chunin says after a few minutes as she turns the form she’d been filling out towards them.
It’s as if in a haze that Iruka walks over to the desk, takes the pen, and signs his name right next to Kakashi’s.
“Congratulations,” the chunin tells them, “You are now married.”
As Iruka looks at the marriage license in front of him, the reality of the situation slowly begins to sink in. He just married Kakashi of all people.
What has he gotten himself into?
“Is that all?” the chunin’s adds in a voice that makes it clear that the last thing she wants to do is to fill out more documents.
“Actually,” Iruka knows Kakashi’s smiling under his mask as he says it, “We are going to need adoption paperwork…”

concerns - senju tobirama/reader
Summary: Tobirama getting injured from a mission is nothing new. He could care less about that. However, having you see him in that state is another story.
A/N: here i am, back to annoying you with some husband!tobirama lmfaooooooo from the same timeline of you never said goodbye, overstepping, and hold my hand.
Also available in AO3 under the series name ‘til death do us part (where i am dumping all these one-shots in)
Tobirama does not make mistakes.
So when he's dragged into the hospital by his students, he makes a big fuss over the whole ordeal. He really does not need this. He is fine , he has survived far worse injuries that left him with one leg into the afterlife. Really, everything will be fine if everyone just stops freaking out and trying to make this a big deal.
The mission was, by far a success, in Tobirama’s standards. It was the usual sabotage and raid kind of mission. Everyone came back alive and in one piece, including him. He just had the misfortune of encountering a goose chase that ended up being an ambush. Luckily, he was able to get everyone out of the situation, and with his flying raijin jutsu, the enemy was quickly eliminated. Except that, apparently, one of his students had noticed that someone had hacked at his side, and he is also sporting a head wound turned into concussion.
Something that Tobirama is sure that he can sleep off.
Fortunately for him, his brother is one of the best healers in the village and is the Hokage. Certainly, he will tell these people to go on about their day.
“Dammit, where is Lord First?!” Danzo suddenly exclaimed with great vexation.
The medics in the hospital are swarming all around trying to calm Tobirama and his very high-strung and concerned students. They are all hounding on the medics, handing them a barrage of questions that only adds to the noise and confusion.
Tobirama focused his efforts into warding off the medics, while his side bleeds profusely and steadily, and is starting to form a pool on the hospital floor.
“Lord Tobirama, please let us do our job!” One of the medics pleaded as they attempted to inject him with a suspicious looking liquid.
“Hey! What is that?!” Homura barks.
The door opens, and Hashirama finally steps through the threshold, his face tight and his commanding presence takes charge of the room. Behind him, is Tobirama’s...well. His significant other, and well, you, also known as his intended.
Tobirama suddenly feels betrayed. He doesn’t want you to see him like this. Half-mad and numb from the adrenaline of being injured.
The only response he could muster was absent of kind words.
“Get her away from here! What is she doing here? Get her out!” Tobirama suddenly starts shouting.
You stare at him, bewildered. On top of your worries, just the sight of him like this makes your skin blanche. You have seen Tobirama beaten up and worn from battle, but you have never had to be the receiving end of his hostile demeanor. Usually, they are meant for enemies. Usually, Tobirama keeps a cool head in the most stressful situations.
Usually.
“Tobirama,” you call out. Your eyes go to his side, which is clumsily patched. The blood has completely soaked the gauze and they are clumping up on the bedsheets and the floor.
“Go away!” Tobirama barks, but his eyes do not meet yours.
Hashirama takes this moment to settle Tobirama. He steps closer to his brother and forcibly pushes him down on the hospital bed. He thrashes, completely livid.
“Tobirama, what the hell is wrong with you? Calm down!” Hashirama yells.
Hashirama turns to you. “It is best you leave.”
You stare at the scene before you, unsure of how to process the hurt that is settling in your heart. Suddenly, you feel a hand on your shoulder, gently directing you outside. You glance back just in time for Hashirama to touch Tobirama’s forehead, and Tobirama drops down, unconscious.
“He will be alright,” Uchiha Kagami reassures from beside you. He retrieves his hand from your shoulder and he closes the door behind him. “You know how he is.”
You frown. Usually, you know how Tobirama is. You don’t know what to make of what just happened.
“I would like to apologize on his behalf,” Kagami continues.
You nod glumly, and you sit by the waiting chairs against the wall. Kagami opts to stay in the hallway with you, taking interest in his scuffed sandals and picking at the weapons pouch placed on his leg.
Finally, Hashirama steps out after what seems like hours.
You look up, and you notice the weariness on his face.
“He’s alright, he’s just resting,” Hashirama says. “I am sorry that my brother behaved like that. If it makes you feel better, he has some head trauma. Minor, but. Still head trauma.”
“What about his other injuries?”
“Nothing I cannot fix,” Hashirama smiles. “Although, he must have been in some kind of delirium for being able to keep going with that heavy of a damage.”
You take your fingers to the bridge of your nose and massage the blossoming headache away. “He is such a damned fool sometimes.”
Hashirama’s laugh makes you start, as it is loud and booming. “Amazing. You really do have the guts to talk behind his back.”
You can’t help but smirk at this. “Well, someone has to. Why do you think he took notice of me?”
Hashirama shakes his head with amusement. “I will have to take my leave, as there are other pressing matters I have to attend to. I will come back in the evening to check on him and beat some sense into that stubborn skull of his.”
You nod. You watch Hashirama leave, and then you nod at Kagami. The two of you enter the room again, where it is much quieter now, a stark contrast to the room that was a while ago. Tobirama is in his bed, unconscious, while his students surround him, looking around anywhere but at each other and their injured sensei.
The blood on the floor is now turning dark. You cringe at the sight of it, not because you are queasy, but because no one has really thought of cleaning it away.
Hiruzen clears his throat, and it seems like that was a silent conversation between him and his teammates because a moment later, they pile towards the door to exit.
Once everyone is cleared out of the room, you take your seat on the chair that is on the cleaner side.
You finally let out a sigh of relief, and you cannot help the tears that are coming. For once, you are glad he is unconscious and unaware of what you are feeling at the moment.
“Dammit, Tobirama,” you whisper quietly. It is a catchphrase of yours that has not worn out yet.
You look towards the window and wait until the tears have dried. You do not leave his side until Hashirama comes in the evening to check up on him and gives you the positive prognosis of Tobirama’s condition.
“Go home and get some sleep,” Hashirama gently tells you. “He will still be here tomorrow.”
Knowing Tobirama, if he wakes up tomorrow, he will do anything to get out of the hospital. However, you do what as the Shodaime Hokage says.
//
Exactly as you predicted, Tobirama has high-tailed out of the hospital and has gone off the grid from his students and his brother. He has probably gone into one of his labs, or gods forbid, that doomsday shelter you know he has been constructing underground. He reasons that it’s for emergencies. His head is always planning for emergencies and war measures.
However, as much as his students pleaded with you, you know that it is best that you all leave him to his devices. Finding him might be a dangerous deed since he has laced his secrets with traps and seals of his making.
You ignore that feeling in your gut that you should chase after him, and have settled to just lock yourself in your apartment.
You try to immerse yourself in some reading and studying, since as a jounin, it is a requirement that you polish your knowledge. However, all efforts are in vain. Your focus is nowhere to be accessed, and your thoughts only flit to the man that you are supposed to be marrying in just a few months.
A lot of patience and waiting is required to be personally involved with Tobirama.
You were in the middle of a nap when suddenly your front door was banging.
You hop to your feet immediately, just as the door opens. Without thinking, you throw kunais towards the intruder, and at the last minute, they are deflected and you find yourself face to face with a haggard Tobirama.
“Why didn’t you answer?” Tobirama demands, pacing with his shoulders taut and his features ready to jump at any threat.
“Why did you have to break in?” You retort. “You have the key.”
Tobirama looks like there are a hundred conversations that he is attending to. His eyes are lit with a kind nervous energy, and he is talking so quickly that there is no word that he speaks you can hang on to. It is like, he is some crazed scientist hashing out a lengthy lecture in under ten minutes.
You are genuinely, very worried about his state.
Then, he steps into your space and he peers over at you, his eyes alert and scanning you for nonexistent injuries.
“Tobi,” you whisper, your eyes tracking him.
“I couldn’t find you,” Tobirama finally murmurs after a long time, and you sense that he is now calmer. “I was–”
Tobirama sighs, his fatigue clearly set on his features.
“I couldn’t find you...I’d have thought you were going to be there when I woke up,” Tobirama states. His eyes flit down.
Suddenly, you are miffed. “And you thought that going to gods knows where is going to help you?”
Tobirama frowns. “I needed to do something. I could not be deterred.”
“Like what, Tobirama?”
“I just had to straighten up something, think it out. I suddenly thought of a framework for another lightning-style jutsu, and I got carried away.”
You take a tentative step towards him and you keep your eyes on his face. He looks a little bit withdrawn, and very pale.
“You are worrying me,” you say to him. You watch the countless emotions that flit through his face.
“I’d have thought you would want space from me after what I had said to you yesterday,” Tobirama murmurs quietly.
“You had head trauma,” you supplied slowly.
“No, I may have acted adversely to the fact that you saw me injured.”
You take a deep breath and you frame Tobirama’s face with your hands. “Tobirama, I have seen you injured before. Why is this any different?”
Tobirama looks away again.
You wait for him, because patience is a practiced ability one must have when personally involved with Tobirama.
“I was reckless, and because of that, I could have made a mistake that could have ended me,” Tobirama finally says. His voice is missing his usual edge. “That is the equivalent of me leaving you at the altar and not fulfilling my promise to you.”
You sigh, and you give him a small smile. “For what it’s worth, I will save you from injuring your man pride further, however, you are not forgiven until you close my door.”
“I have not apologized.”
“No, but you look really pathetic right now.”
“I thought you would mop the floor with my pathetic self right about now.”
You chuckle softly. “Rain check?”
Tobirama nods, and then he leans over to kiss your forehead. “Don’t be too eager.” He smirks against your forehead. “I am injured.”
“Please, you and your Senju genes have gotten you this far. You will be okay.”
Tobirama pulls away and he studies your face. “That is not a compliment.”
“In my defense, it is sort of a compliment.”
Tobirama stares at you, and he does that one thing only you can make him do. He smiles. It is barely there, but you know by the way his eyes fill with mirth and amusement, something he only reserves for you.
END.

Hisoka!AU of DOS, Rokudaime(whoever you pick to end up with that job in this verse), A Steady Hand (NOTE: For Hisoka!AU, see Recursive forum pg 489 #14,655 - Snapshots From The Past Of Hisoka by donahermurphy pg 489 #14,665 - A Meeting While Fleeing The Garden & Desert by Tirfarthuan pg 491 #14,716 - A Name & A Gift Passed On by Tirfarthuan)
A/N: Thanks for the biblio [1+2, 3], dona--I did not know who Hisoka was before this, so those helped a lot! I did, also, have to reread the Lone Wolf 'verse since from what I understand Hisoka is an AU of that 'verse specifically? If not, please let me know.
Anyway, on rereading Lone Wolf 'verse, here are the facts that I gleaned:
Danzo is Hokage
Hiruzen died of "natural causes" several years before canon
Kakashi "betrayed the village" somehow and is being called Comrade-Killer more prevalently than canon
Asuma is probably dead
Yuuhi Shinku isn't an entire dick (since Uchiha Uzume can think about him without an automatic insult attached)
Shin is still alive (but very slowly dying)
and Kurenai is helping the Uchiha at the very least cover up a meeting with Kakashi outside of the village.
The facts of the Hisoka!AU are:
Shikako was taken to be ROOT
in order to protect those she cared about she mentally/spiritually maimed herself to the point where she no longer counted as "a Shikako" to Gelel
her partner for the final exam was Sai
she escaped/convinced Sai that the point of the final exam was to fake her death and became a fishmonger on the coast of Wind
when Shikako!Prime leaves via Gelel she "wakes up" from said previous mental/spiritual maiming
Kakashi finds her and they're a lovely wolf and cub pair who aim to kill Danzo (and get rid of their loneliness and maybe heal)
... okay, now that I typed all that out, did you mean Hisoka!AU of canon DoS instead of the Hisoka!AU of the Lone Wolf 'verse? Because those are different things, I think. But I kinda figured Hisoka!AU was intrinsically tied to the Lone Wolf 'verse, so, uh, here's a couple of ideas I had in mind:
1) Akimichi Chouza as Rokudaime.
Because after the absolute worst sort of "warmongering, self-cannibalizing, Konoha first" bullshit that Danzo spewed, the village needs someone who recognizes that being the village leader means making and protecting a home worth living in, not just a harsh taskmaster sending his soldiers out to die.
I considered Shikaku!Rokudaime for a similar sort of reason, but it's not as thematic and, also on a personal level, he can't. In a Hisoka!AU, he has to reconcile the fact that he gave one of his children--willingly or not, even if Danzo wiped his memory later--to a man who he already knew would exploit her horrendously. Maybe he didn't know the full extent of ROOT's training (surely not the final exam) but the fact that he was apprehensive and still went through with it is not a good look.
Even if Hisoka and Kakashi do not return to the village proper (and part of me is like, hey! They shouldn't! And I will go into that more in a little bit) he has to make amends to at least her, if not both of them, and he can't be Hokage and bound to prioritize the village over her if he ever wants to succeed.
Chouza, on the other hand, is the only one of the three who never made that decision (I'm still a little side-eyeing the Yamanaka clan, because surely a clan whose whole deal is KNOWING WHEN MENTAL SHENANIGANS IS GOING ON should have seen that with Fu, especially since he was allowed to keep his name and also, probably, had to have clan training to learn the clan jutsu, but maybe it wasn't Inoichi who made that deal? Maybe it was his predecessor. Either way, still mega sketch. I'm a little hand-wavy with Shibi and the Aburame because I headcanon that the Kyuubi largely wiped out what power they had the most out of any of the clans and they were like. Desperate to survive. And didn't have allied clans to bolster them.) And yes, probably that's because as far as fighting styles are concerned, they rely on their clan jutsu which is very recognizable and thus not great for ANBU (in the same way that I imagine the Inuzuka aren't often recruited into ANBU) but it's still a notable fact. The Akimichi are trustworthy pillars of the village and have been since the beginning.
And it helps that of the Nidaime's team, Akimichi Torifu was one of two of the full six who didn't turn into an old corruptible asshole. Sure, we don't necessarily know what happened to him, but he wasn't specifically seen as an old corruptible asshole so I think he's winning. It reflects well on his clan as a whole. Also, given my headcanon of the Akimichi actively cultivating their ties with civilians and also possibly the Daimyo's family they have, alongside military might, financial and political clout.
Anyway, while a possible Tsunade as Rokudaime would have similar vibes (and does, you know, match canon and have those canon reasons for working) in terms of "healing the village" etc. etc. This is a Tsunade whose most bitter cynicism was proven right? And there's no inspirational Naruto to convince her otherwise. And also, Tsunade shouldn't HAVE to clean up Danzo's mess. Like, the minuscule obligation she had to clean up Hiruzen's mess does not apply to Danzo. (It's a little like... Tsunade, Jiraiya, and Orochimaru were raised to be the ultimate team to take over for Hiruzen except they didn't know it and were dysfunctional. The fact that Hiruzen's death was by Orochimaru's hand and between her and Jiraiya she is the better choice is the only reason why she has that slight obligation to go back to Konoha. Whereas, with Danzo? FUCK THAT NOISE. That's a mess the village needs to resolve on their own. THEY'RE the ones who let it get so bad. THEY'RE the ones who need to deal with it)
And also, another reason why I don't really want Tsunade as Rokudaime is because I kind of like the idea of Kakashi and Hisoka sort of orbiting/paralleling her and Shizune. Like, there's a not-so-secret society of Konoha expatriates who aren't actually missing-nin and both love and hate the village and Tsunade is exasperatedly fond of those two disasters whereas she is sickened by the village. Maybe one day it will have fixed itself enough that she'll go back and visit and whip their Medic Corps into shape, but that is not any time soon!
Also, also, also, and I don't know if you remember this, dona, but in your In Which Someone Attempts to Kidnap Shikamaru, Instead, Inoichi brings up something called the Regency Protocol with Ino in regards to Danzo kidnapping Shikako and brainwashing Shikaku to forget and originally I thought it was some kind of Ino-Shika-Cho contingency plan where the three clans take over the village BECAUSE DANZO IS KIDNAPPING AND MURDERING CHILDREN AND THE SANDAIME WAS LETTING IT HAPPEN ON HIS WATCH? And of the three clans, the Akimichi really do have the traditional fighting prowess to wear the hat, so that's part of this too.
I just think an Akimichi Hokage would be pretty chill about it. Like. They wear power well and are good at managing people without crushing them in the fist of tyranny.
---
2) Maito Gai as Rokudaime.
This one actually for similar reasons as Chouza. Although, in terms of lineage, Gai could be Shichidaime, not that we're particularly holding to that Hokage teacher-student lineage so much.
In terms of semi-parallels where canon goes Tsunade to Kakashi, that means Gai also is a candidate. And in regards to showing the village/world a new kind of Hokage, he's as far from Danzo as one could get. He's straightforward and kind and draws out the potential from everyone and honestly real great but also wouldn't send someone into a mission he himself wouldn't do. Obviously, being a Hokage would mean delegating and sending shinobi on missions, but he would never send them out to die just because. Yes there are risky missions, but he would send those best suited to succeed with every tool available to them so they can succeed. Whereas Danzo would just throw bodies at a problem and kill the survivors for not doing it good enough.
The main difference between a Rokudaime Gai vs Rokudaime Chouza is that Gai's Konoha would rely less on the clan system. Of his three students, two were not from clans and the third is from the Hyuuga Branch (AND YOU KNOW FOR SURE THAT'S GOING TO BE SOMETHING FINALLY ADDRESSED BY A HOKAGE BECAUSE WHAT THE FUCK). Yes, his sensei was Akimichi Chouza, but neither of his teammates were clan either. A Konoha under the rule of Rokudaime Gai is a Konoha that builds up those who don't have the same infrastructure as clans, who strengthens civilian-born and clan-born alike, who make sure that talented civilian-born students aren't only noticed by predatory old men who can sweep there existences under the rug.
Because truly one of the many ways that Danzo's weird self-hating megalomania harmed the village was by draining away the talented civilian-borns of Konoha. He who hated that the Shimura were a near-civilian clan, committed the worst crimes against those who could have proved that bloodline wasn't everything. He was so obsessed with the power of the Sharingan that it became a self fulfilling prophecy. Any talented non-bloodline student who could have proven a challenge were stolen and smothered before they could prove themselves.
Because imagine this: one day some random student with the ubiquitous last name of Satou or Tanaka or Honda beats Uchiha Itachi in a spar. Maybe its an accident. Maybe they got lucky. Maybe Itachi wasn't taking them seriously (after all, what could some no name civilian born do to him?). But those maybes don't matter. Satou or Tanaka or Honda gets in one good hit. Surprises the prodigy of the Uchiha clan. Knocks him out.
The teacher takes a note of it. Talks about it in the teacher's lounge. One of Danzo's spies brings news of that notable spar.
By the next week--maybe even the next day--Satou or Tanaka or Honda is gone. No one beats Uchiha Itachi in a spar anymore. And ROOT adds another nameless, faceless soldier to its ranks.
BUT NONE OF THAT HAPPENS UNDER HOKAGE MAITO GAI. Because it is civilians that make Konoha a village and not just a loose coalition of clans. Because a name and a bloodline are not necessary to make a person great.
3) And here's the angsty/semi-bleak option: Yuuhi Kurenai as Rokudaime.
And I wrote a little bit for it, but I'm a little... mreh... about it because it does revolve a lot around the various men in her life which I'm not exactly proud of, tbh, but aaaaaaaaaagh this is endemic to a lot of Naruto fic. D:<
Yuuhi Kurenai is nobody's first choice.
(She was Asuma's first choice, and he was hers, and that had nothing to do with either of their fathers. Except now Asuma is--)
Her father wanted a son. A proper heir. Someone to elevate the prestige of the Yuuhi clan.
(In another universe, Yuuhi Shinku will think the only way his daughter can benefit the clan is through marriage, not her own merits. In this universe Yuuhi Shinku is a little bit more open minded enough to make do. He's still a dick, but not as much of one as he could've been. This puts Kurenai in an interesting position.)
The Uchiha clan are pursuing another ally with a little more fire power, a little more name recognition, and all the intimidation and influence that entails.
(But look at where that got Kakashi, exiled and with his reputation in tatters. Look at Gai who so eagerly and overtly wants to follow. Look at Asuma who--)
The rest of the village would prefer someone who didn't look so much like the clan of would be traitors. Someone who didn't have black hair and piercing red eyes. Someone who didn't specialize in genjutsu, an art for liars.
(Oh, but they were fine quietly suffering under a man who lied and stole and murdered. A man who manipulated and cheated and framed others for his crimes. A man who ruined everything he touched and Asuma tried to stop him, gods, but then he--)
And the world doesn't quite know what to do with a Hokage like her. Or a Kage that is a her, for that matter.
Yuuhi Kurenai is nobody's first choice.
But that's fine. She can make do.
She can make miracles out of nothing.
So the thought process to get to a Rokudaime Kurenai went kind of like such. Obviously, the Uchiha would prefer an Uchiha Hokage. However that largely depends on whether they succeed in their coup or not. There's the distinct possibility that Kakashi plus Shikako!Prime or Kakashi plus Hisoka will just kill Danzo and then leave, forcing the rest of the village deal with the consequences... AS THEY SHOULD... and thus also sort of cutting the coup off at the knees.
If the coup doesn't succeed (whether out of failure or because Kakashi and a Shikako kills Danzo first before they're prepared to do the rest of the coup) then if the political climate actually matches the one they perceive themselves being in (although, I don't think the Uchiha are as hated as they think they are, but its hard for them to see that isolated as they've been forced to be) then they're unlikely to get an Uchiha Hokage especially if news of them actually seeking an alliance with Comrade-Killer Hatake Kakashi comes out. Much less the aborted/failed coup.
Anyway, no Uchiha Hokage without a successful coup... although, if there were a successful coup, the three Uchiha I would think would be even feasible would be Fugaku--boring, bland, but that's what they know. Shisui--friendly, well liked by those outside the clan, has an international reputation. Mikoto--this is largely based on fanon/headcanon, but she was ANBU Captain? That's pretty neat.
But, uh, to get back to the no Uchiha Hokage... Kakashi's reputation is still in tatters. Maito Gai could be a good option, but while his lack of clan is a good thing for future Konoha, he doesn't quite have the political backing necessary to get there. (Namikaze Minato was an undisputed war hero. Maito Gai hasn't quite proven himself that level yet)
If its brought up that the Ino-Shika-Cho were compromised (ie, Shikaku would have worked closely with Hokage Danzo as the Jounin Commander and also one of Danzo's top ROOT agents is Yamanaka Fu) then even Chouza's candidacy would be suspect.
The village wants Tsunade. But Tsunade does not want it. I have no fucking idea what Jiraiya has been up to, but if he didn't want the hat after Hiruzen died he sure as fuck won't want it after whatever Danzo's done with it.
The Hokage's Council is suspect. Yuuhi Shinku, for all that he is similarly important to the infrastructure of Konoha while also not being part of Danzo's corruption (in another universe, he very well would have been, desperate for power), isn't actually that strong and is old, besides. (The village has had enough of old men entrenched in positions of power telling them what to do).
But he does have a daughter. Genjutsu specialist, yes, but with potential and room to grow. And Sarutobi Asuma loved her (and, fuck, what a shitty campaign to run on, the would-have-been-widow of the Sandaime's son, but you know Shinku would be ruthless in pushing that. Remember, not as much of a dick in other 'verses, but still a dick) so she has that tether to the old regime, tentative as it is.
No one really has any major objections, but no one is really all that gung-ho about it either (except for maybe Anko who will punch all detractors in the face and may very well be a one woman Hokage's Guard).
Kurenai least of all. Because she doesn't want to be Hokage, but she'd rather step up and do it than watch her village tear itself apart even further. And maybe she doesn't know who she is just yet, and maybe it sucks that she's going to have to discover that while also being Hokage, but gods she's going to try her best because at least she knows what Danzo was doing was wrong and that there's no way she can do worse than him unless she just actively slaughtered children in the street.
...
Hm, yeah, kinda bleak ending. But as I said. The Rokudaime Kurenai one is the angsty-bleak option. I mean, it gets more hopeful, but it is a struggle I think for both her and the village.
I know its not a proper ficlet fill, dona, but hope you enjoyed this brain storm / meta anyway. :D

this is a post where i am talking to myself about satsuverse and characters’ life directions because apparently my brain is caught on figuring this out before i can go back to Actually Writing
itachi - either finally growing a spine or entering his teenage rebellion phase, depending on who you talk to - acquires a discharge from anbu, abdicates from his position as clan heir, and signs up for medic classes at the hospital. he has known death since he was a child; he has walked alongside it, delivered countless people to its hand. it is imperative to his mental health that he learn how to save as well as kill.
sasuke is a second son and shows it. there is not a moment in anyone’s mind where they consider that he become clan heir after itachi. sasuke is a rambunctious child and loves chasing after people and whacking them with sticks, and this seamlessly levels up into an adoration for swords. he chases down his tokubetsu jounin uncle ryouji for kenjutsu lessons. his dream is to become anbu commander, because what traumatises one brother will be heaven to the other, right,
satsuki takes up the mantle of clan heir after itachi abdicates. they love their clan - are proud of their clan, which sometimes is another thing altogether - and, although the level of responsibility is new, they have always prioritised their clan. there is no division of loyalty.
the focus of their skills are genjutsu, poison, and fuuinjutsu. as one of shisui’s students, they’re Very Good at shunshin; combine that with their reverse-engineered hiraishin, and they are So Fucking Fast y’all
since outguard head is concerned with all things external--external threats, missions, border security (though in a post-konoha landscape, what does ‘border’ mean? the border of clan lands? the border of the village?)--and satsuki is uh. (looks at hiruzen who is ousted from his seat when the rookie nine are 8. looks at danzo who is dead before the rookie nine are 12. looks at obito whose path to supervillainy is cut off partway through the power of friendship and also destruction of his compulsion seal.) Pretty Good At Dealing With External Threats, I Think. they can probably be outguard head? and remain seen as clan head to outsiders?
(in satsuverse, mikoto is the one who’s of the main line - she’s homeguard head. fugaku, when he married her, took over as outguard head. to outsiders i imagine that that looked like ‘woman heir gets married for legitimacy while her husband takes over the actual position to rule’)
the konoha military police force ... does technically fulfill the ‘border security’ part of outguard head if the ‘border’ is taken as the border of the village ... but can i really write satsuki as a cop..................
like. yes. satsuki would genuinely like to keep their village and clan safe. they do, genuinely, want to ensure that the acts of danzo and orochimaru cannot happen again, that the village will not knowingly allow traitors and child-snatchers and child-experimenters to roam free and grow.
but uh. maybe intelligence would be better suited for their personality rather than kmpf.
“who would be satsuki’s homeguard head, if they’re the outguard head?” you know that’s a great question and one i don’t know the answer to. shisui, in becoming the rookie nine gen’s babysitter and training kiddies and also being the best friend of clan heir 1 and clan heir 2 and sincerely wanting to help them figure out how to make this clan work, would actually be good homeguard head material, i think? if only i could marry him... (gazes wistfully into the distance)
(shisui is eight years older than satsuki and also, again, Literally Their Babysitter and later their jounin-sensei, so although i love him very much and satsuki also canonly loves him and considers him their Person, Him Ever Having Feelings For Satsuki Would Be Weird.
why did i do this to myself.
oh right it’s because i can’t go five minutes without interacting with shisui, even to my detriment.)
if i think about tobirama, who also fulfills the function of a homeguard head by actually running the clan while hashirama is the face of it, then. uh. naras come to mind. and satsuki’s teammate nara seika 1) is not main-line nara, which means that he can be married out without succession issues, technically, and 2) would not actually mind marrying satsuki no matter what form that relationship would take, so... he might be a possibility?
kagura (maternal cousin - mikoto’s sister’s oldest child) might be a contender but i need to flesh her out more before i can think about her qualifications more in-depth
i will. think on this issue later. because it has no actual bearing on what i’m writing about now.
uh.
other life directions.
sakura is going to be a front-line medic like in canon. she can hit you so hard you want to die and then she’ll heal you so that she can do it again.
hinata as a medic suits her personality... she doesn’t want to hurt anyone and although that’s a detriment for a shinobi, it doesn’t have to stifle her options completely. i know that she Can fight and that it’s like character growth or whatever for her to become confident enough to strike her opponents ruthlessly, but, also, like. man. man it fucking sucks that That’s what’s desirable
naruto learns fuuinjutsu because He Deserves This, Dammit. i do also want to like... expand on the skills he actively cultivates in canon (trapping, transformations) bc these are things that he enjoys and they’re Useful. little foxy trickster
shikamaru is the logistics guy. lazy, doesn’t want responsibility, but he’s responsible enough to get off his ass anyway to get shit done. he’s so going to become naruto’s advisor when naruto’s hokage and he’s going to stress about it but he’d be MORE stressed if he wasn’t there
ino is Obviously going to follow inoichi into intelligence. also i think she’d be good with poisons, with a preexisting foundation in botany. i can see her doing a stint in anbu, taking on seduction missions - of all the kids i think she’s the only one suited for that particular type of mission
(looks at the rest of the kids) the fuck am i going to do with all of you
i ran out of steam obviously but. mmrrrrghhh.

@dokuhebi said: Golden eyes watch in embitterment, the darkness in the room casting a shadow over their face, where a bright gaze loses little light. Slender arms folding neatly on their chest, their figure appearing tucked away as they lean against the mans lounge wall. Hidden, until their voice breaks the silence and alerts him to their entry. “Did he offer you the position?” They say, a quietly cutting sound, their voice unable to hide their irritation, “Hiruzen. Did he offer you the Hokage's seat?"
 A long, long, long day on the road led Jiraiya back to Konoha’s gates before sundown, the grand structure looming before tired eyes for the first time in months. At last, he was home... but even now, it wasn’t quite time to relax just yet.
 Relaying his findings to the Hokage was the first port of call, yet even with so much to cover since he’d last set foot here, there was a silver lining. It lent vigour to his gait as he passed through the village, waving and grinning at those who recognised him. The reason for his high spirits was simple; seldom did he have the luxury of knowing he would be on guaranteed furlough after months of (mostly) tireless work, as he’d been informed a few days prior via messenger toad, and while his house would doubtlessly have gathered dust in his absence, he nonetheless looked forward to laying his head somewhere familiar tonight.
 The plan, initially, was as follows: file the report, which he’d painstakingly detailed within a scroll the night before, answer any questions, hightail it the hell out of there as soon as possible, take a trip to the convenience store for snacks, perhaps stop at his favourite dive for a few drinks... and head home. In approximately that order.
 But before he could make his hasty escape along with the other jōnin, Hiruzen had stopped him in his tracks, much to his dismay. And within moments of the mentor and student speaking in absolute privacy, dismay had morphed into utter shock, and shock into a rather heated exchange that saw the gold-bathed evening darken to embers in the world outside the Hokage’s office.
 By the time Jiraiya finally stepped outside again, there was little warmth to be offered by the silvery moon and smattering of stars suspended in the deep, velvet sky, and his path was beaten with the heavy footfall of one whose troubles had piled their vast weight upon his shoulders all at once.
Tumblr media
 A deep sigh fills the quiet hall as the front door clicks shut, a definite sealing of personal space that would appear almost to lower a heavy aura of defensiveness about the sage, like shedding one’s armour after battle. Jiraiya almost forgets to remove his shoes at first, such is his eagerness for a good, stiff drink in the comfort of his own home. Such is his exhaustion, too, that he doesn’t bother to switch on the light, allowing muscle memory to guide him through the familiar layout of the lounge and towards an open archway leading to the kitchen.
 Never the most adept sensor, and with his weary state after a few tense drinks at the bar not helping him any, Jiraiya fails to notice the other presence in the room—not until a soft, sharp hiss slices the silence like razor wire, familiar in tone but unexpected enough that he jumps back a few clumsy steps. Grabbing the back of the sofa for support, he catches his breath before groping for the nearby table lamp, and with an abrupt tug of a chain the ink-dark room becomes bathed in a soft, orange glow, illuminating the pale features of the voice’s owner.
 To think that the boy always getting caught peeping would grow into one of the Leaf’s most skilled spies, only to be caught so off-guard in his very own home…
 “Fuck, Oro, you just about scared the crap outta me...” Says the sage with whiny reproach, a special tone reserved mostly for his closest friends… although in recent years, ‘close’ had become a generous way to describe this particular friendship. To elaborate, saying that seeing them here was a rarity would be a gross understatement. To elaborate further, the two shinobi that had once been joined at the hip had seldom even spoken to each other lately, what with Jiraiya being sent more frequently on solo missions abroad, and Orochimaru being... in a certain way.
 It hadn’t gone lost on Jiraiya that they were near impossible to get a hold of these days, nor that the reception was frosty at best when he succeeded. This had been the way, and had grown steadily worse, ever since his return home after a specific stint away. It was a very particular elephant that invaded whichever space they briefly shared, very much dominating but also very much swept under the rug, whether due to circumstance or reluctance on both sides. And Jiraiya, contrary to popular belief, wasn’t as stupid as he often seemed. It certainly didn’t take the nature of Orochimaru’s greeting for him to know one thing with absolute certainty: that this probably wasn’t going to be a friendly welcome home.
 Still, maybe it should have surprised him more when they came straight out with that almost accusatory question.
 And maybe it would have, if not for a certain expectation born of the relationship between his teammate and his sensei—a connection that always seemed just a little bit deeper than what Hiruzen had with himself or Tsunade—the expectation being that Orochimaru would surely be the natural successor when the time came for their elder’s retirement. And they would surely be the first to know, too, if there were changes to that plan… changes such as Hiruzen deciding that Jiraiya was the more suitable candidate, for example. A change that had hit Jiraiya himself like a bolt out of the blue this very evening, leading him to wonder if there was more to the withering bond between himself and Orochimaru than he’d initially thought.
 The coldness of their yellow eyes, no warmer for the gentle lamplight, doesn’t bode well. Their presence here is anything but coincidental. But Jiraiya meets that venomous glower nonetheless, the initial shock fleeing his gaze and leaving behind the usual calm, earthy grey.
 “… Yeah,” he answers simply after a pause, seeing no reason to lie to them. “Yeah, he did.”
 Silence reigns for some further tense seconds, during which Jiraiya drags up a hand to run through his hair, eye contact eventually faltering in the laden moment before he turns and vanishes briefly into the kitchen. When he comes back, it is with hands full of a bottle and cups, which he lays out on the coffee table before sinking into the armchair facing Orochimaru. He pours two cups, an invitation for them to sit that matches the hopeful look he flashes their way as he addresses them once more.
 “Anyway, I respectfully declined.” A smirk, to highlight the fact that respectful might not be a wholly accurate descriptor. “Of course, that means that for all intents and purposes, I was never asked at all… I’m sure you catch my meaning.”
 If word got out about Jiraiya’s refusal of the post, there would no doubt be contention among shinobi ranks and civilians alike—for various reasons ranging from disappointment, to concerns about dissent, to outrage at the fact he’d been considered at all. It strikes Jiraiya that he may well be the very first person to have ever refused the position. In the grand scheme of things, the entire system was still in its fledgling years, and the current process of selecting a new leader was... informal at best. And downright biased at worst.
 Jiraiya takes a hearty swig of his drink, and settles back in the chair with a sigh, his mild intoxication more apparent now that the initial surprise and tension had subsided.
 “You know why he did it though, right? To try and keep me where they can keep a closer eye on me after… You know. I can’t think of any reason why the old man would consider me suitable otherwise. You’ve always been the most qualified to take up the mantle. Smarter, more sensible, more powerful... less volatile. I always believed that. I still believe that. Much as it absolutely destroys me to admit it...”
 Of course, those words come as earnestly as the good-humoured, albeit bittersweet laugh that accompanies it, the sage being quite unaware of certain rumours that have been flying around lately. Eyes soft, he stares down into his cup, his smile a spirit clinging for permanence on his features.
 “... What the hell happened, Oro?”

The Genin Gaffe
Remember the Kakashi look-alike, Kumade Toriichi? Maybe you don’t, but I do, and he hasn’t been far from my imagination:
Tumblr media
I discovered this unknown Konoha Dork last February and wrote a drabble about him titled, The Copy Ninja.
I decided it was time to continue the Kumade and Kakashi Saga with a new piece of pure crack fanfiction.
I offer no excuse nor apology for this ridiculous drabble. I've spent most of my life surrounded by boys in my immediate and extended family, so, it was inevitable that fart humor would make its way into my fanfiction.
Gen, Rated: G
Hiruzen Sarutobi assigned a mission to Kumade Toriichi erroneously, and he enlists Minato's help to cover his mistake before there are long-lasting consequences to Kakashi Hatake's reputation.
Read on AO3
The Genin Gaffe
“You have a mission for me, Lord Third?” Minato Namikaze raised his head to regard the leader of the Hidden Leaf from where he knelt in the Hokage’s office.
“Yes,” Hiruzen Sarutobi exhaled the word absentmindedly within a cloud of pipe smoke without looking up from the scroll he was reading.
Minato maintained his reverent position and waited patiently as Lord Third finished scanning the message. Hiruzen signaled his completion of the letter with a thoughtful hum before he rolled the scroll up again and set it aside on his desk. The slight creases around his eyes became more pronounced when he issued a small, but warm smile to Konoha’s Yellow Flash.
“Minato,” he said the jōnin’s name softly and slowly. “Do you know Kakashi Hatake?”
“I’ve heard of him, certainly,” Minato said as he stood up. “He’s the son of the White Fang, correct? Other shinobi in the village have called him a prodigy, having graduated to genin after only one year at Konoha’s Ninja Academy.”
“Hmm,” Lord Third confirmed Minato’s information with a nod. “Kakashi has displayed exceptional skill and intelligence for one so young. However, I’ve been unable to find a permanent place for him on a team, even though he was quite popular among his classmates.” Hiruzen tapped the ashes out of his pipe into a glass dish before setting it down.
Minato paused for a moment to consider his response. “I have also heard that Hatake is difficult to work with,” he admitted. “Kakashi’s rigid adherence to the Shinobi Rules and determination to successfully complete missions regardless of the cost to his teammates has prevented others from wanting to join up with him.” Minato’s bright blue eyes met Hiruzen’s fixed gaze. “I assumed his behavior was a result of the circumstances surrounding Sakumo’s death. I can imagine the passing of his father has cast a long shadow onto Kakashi’s life.”
“Yes,” Lord Third emphatically agreed. “And it’s only one of the many problems his son is left to resolve on his own.”
“Oh?” Minato’s curiosity and furrowed brow displayed his genuine concern for Kakashi.
The younger man’s reaction was precisely what Hiruzen had hoped for, and he lowered his voice to emphasize that his next words were to be held in the strictest confidence. “As I said, Kakashi was popular among his classmates. Another student, Kumade Toriichi, seems to have modeled himself after Kakashi; though he hasn’t been successful at emulating him.” Lord Third ran a hand down his tired face.
“Kumade?” Minato cast a quizzical look to his Hokage.
“Toriichi,” Hiruzen repeated. “He struggled at school, and because Kakashi excelled in nearly every way, Kumade began to mimic him; in appearance especially.”
Lord Third pinched the front of his official headgear between two fingers and brought the hat down to hide his expression. “It has led me to assign a mission to Kumade erroneously. I’m afraid this has made things even more difficult for Kakashi.”
Minato’s blue eyes widened in shock that Konoha’s leader had made such a mistake, but he was quick to wipe the evidence of his surprise from his face. “The two must bear a striking resemblance, Lord Third.”
“Indeed,” Hiruzen lifted his hat a little, revealing the embarrassed flush that remained on his cheeks. “But that’s not the worst of it. It seems that Kumade has digestive issues.”
“Why would that matter?” Minato puzzled.
“Flatulence compromises even the best shinobi, Minato. Kumade is about as stealthy as Maito’s son. However, whereas Gai will learn the necessary skills to hide himself completely, Toriichi’s condition will plague him throughout his shinobi career. He may never rank higher than chūnin because of it unless perhaps, he can learn to harness it to his advantage.” Hiruzen removed his Hokage’s headpiece and ran one hand through his thinning hair.
Minato silently reassessed his dream to become Hokage, when introduced to a challenge he’d never considered. Outwardly he asked, “What does this have to do with Kakashi?”
“Kumade took advantage of the opportunity that my mistake granted him. He wants to be just like Kakashi, so he pretended to be Kakashi instead of correcting me. His hair looked a little different, but I thought Kakashi had cut it because of the hot summer it’s been.” Hiruzen shook his head. “That doesn’t excuse my mistake and doesn’t change what followed.”
Minato waited in expectant silence as Lord Third cleared his throat and continued. “It was a surveillance mission. They were supposed to shadow a group of traveling merchants that had roused suspicion during their visit to Konoha. From the little intel the team gathered, these merchants may very well have been spies from Iwa.”
Hiruzen sat back in his chair and folded his arms across his chest. “I assigned Shikaku Nara to lead this team, and according to his report, they managed to follow the others for several hours undetected until Kumade literally blew their cover.”
Minato’s mouth fell open, and he attempted to recover as quickly as possible, asking the first serious question that came to mind. “Wh-what made Shikaku suggest they were Iwa nin?”
“The targets encased themselves within an air-tight mud dome, which is an impenetrable protective jutsu that Iwa nin are known to employ. It’s their toughest defense, so it must have been awful. Unfortunately, the mishap incapacitated Shikaku’s team as well, and by the time they recovered, the so-called merchants had escaped underground without a trace.” Hiruzen leaned forward, propping himself up by his elbows on his desk as a grim expression overtook his face.
“My mission then is to try to confirm the identity of the escaped targets?” Minato wasn’t distracted by the odd details of Shikaku’s failed mission and quickly cut to the seriousness of the situation.
“No, I have a different mission for you. One that will remain off the books, and which may test even your patience, Minato.”
Minato respected the secrecy of this upcoming mission and stood silent, waiting for the details of his assignment.
“Word of this episode has spread throughout the shinobi of this village, as one would expect of gossip,” Hiruzen began to explain the sensitive situation to the Yellow Flash. “As you know, Kakashi’s cold demeanor hasn’t endeared him to his comrades. I have received several scrolls from Konoha ninjas respectfully requesting never to be assigned to work with the, uh, Gassy Genin, as they now refer to him.” Lord Third lifted the scroll off of his desk and offered it to Minato.
Minato accepted the scroll and was astonished by what he read. He inhaled sharply, “Does Kakashi know about this?”
“Not yet. I sent him to Suna to deliver a message to the Kazekage. Partly to report the suspicions of Iwa and partly to get Kakashi out of Konoha for a bit. I hoped that this whole mess would be forgotten, but it’s only grown worse. I expect young Hatake to return tomorrow morning.” Hiruzen sighed and looked up at Minato again. “Kakashi has enough problems without the foolish mistake of an old man adding to them.”
“How can I help?” Minato returned the scroll to the Hokage’s desk.
“Team up with both Kakashi and Kumade tomorrow. Round up lost cats, help the elderly carry their groceries, or assist civilians with chores—whatever you can come up with to keep those two boys together and most importantly, seen together. It’ll be easier to explain the mistaken identity that way and hopefully clear the air.”
Minato couldn’t help himself from chuckling at Hiruzen’s choice of words, and Lord Third soon followed him. “Please do this for me Minato. You’ll be compensated out of my pocket for a B-rank mission, because this may be just as difficult. Kakashi detests Kumade, and after seeing how far Kumade will go to mimic Kakashi, I can’t say that I blame him.”
Minato offered a half smile and a nod as acceptance of his mission, before bowing then turning to exit the Hokage’s office.
“Oh, and Minato, if it’s this hot tomorrow, take the boys for ice cream. It might help us determine if Kumade is simply lactose intolerant, which is easy enough to remedy. And should he drop offense where he goes, that’ll be all the proof we need to show the others that they too have mistaken this copycat ninja for Kakashi.”

Ayesha Liveblogs Naruto Shippuden S21
What a tender intro omg also why is this filler so well animated
The introduction of modern technology will never not be funny to me. Kakashi on a laptop. Gaara sending emails. What has the ninja world come to
I know it’s just superfluous background motion but that angry little cat design was amazing. Takes me tf out
Hello again New English Iruka Voice time to feel slightly uncomfortable
Doesn’t Inuyasha have a monopoly on this baby with a red ball imagery
Why! Is! No one! Making sure! Naruto is fed! He’s a baby!!!!!!
Naruto and Sasuke were such adorable children my heart
SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN THE FAMILY WHERE ONE OF THE CHILDREN IS JUST A FROG? WHO IS DOING THESE BACKGROUND ANIMATIONS?????
In case you thought I wasn’t being literal:
Tumblr media
[Accompanying dialogue to this image: “Did you hear the rumours that Lord Fourth died because of him?” WHO IS THIS FROG CHILD WITH A VENDETTA AGAINST MINATO]
This ninja cowboy music seems slightly misplaced but okay
Hiruzen. U r the literal ninja president. Naruto is foraging in the forest for food bc no one is taking care of him! How r u like ‘Hahah I’m hungry too :D’
“The things that we inconsequential humans worry about are often very petty indeed” “You’re right” It’s Philosophy Hours ft. Pre-Schoolers
“Are you sure these mushrooms are safe to eat? “Won’t know ‘til we eat ‘em” HIRUZEN PICK UP THE PHONE
SCREAMS FIVE YEAR OLD NARUTO JUST JUMPED OFF THE HOKAGE MONUMENT AHHHHHH
I miss Neji :((((((((((((((((
“Please make sure that you look after Neji” show us Neji’s mum you cowards!!!
“You have to be more positive, and confident!” Nejiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii my boy
“I wish that I could switch places with you, big brother” There’s a lot to unpack here and I’m wildly concerned about all of it. This episode ought to be titled Konoha Desperately Requires Child Welfare Programs
Making an mini-episode which largely depicts Neji’s tragic backstory and centring its ending on Hinata seems like an odd angle to take
 “I’m alone. I don’t have anyone, but I never cry” NARUTOOOOO
KJHFKJHG THIS NINJA BASEBALL OUTRO I LOVE IT
SASUKE USING HIS SHARINGAN TO CHEAT AT BASEBALL I WHEEZE
Also not that I don’t like Genma but why is he a central figure in this ending. Has he had more than a single conversation with Naruto in his life
Lmao @ Sasuke and Itachi’s child versions going back to having their adult voices. Pick a lane SP!!!
“Things in season are always cheap and tasty” “Oh, is that so, Sasuke? Hahaha” Sasuke learning about the ninja economy
“We’re going to visit your mother’s family” Two questions: 1) Aren’t your families the same family (eep) and 2) Don’t they all live in the same part of the village
90% of this dialogue is recycled from prior episodes except delivered more slowly and it’s a little confusing
Itachi sure knows a lot about cooking for an eleven-year-old
Sasuke being a clumsy child is such a cute character detail ahhhh I love him so much 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
“[Confused laughter] You want to be like me?” What a Mood Itachi
Sakura’s hideout in the woods is so sweet yes 2 semi-normal childhoods
Poor little Sakura already concerned about her appearance they never let girls live do they
“You’re really cute Sakura, don’t hide it” Ino and Sakura are the most adorable children in the WORLD I love their relationship 4ever
“If she’s cute like you say, then I would love to meet her” who will stop all men
“But Ino, aren’t you good friends with Sakura?” “No, not really” Okay not to project but. I have a lot of thoughts on this narrative
GASP Inner Sakura’s first appearance!!
Tiny Team 7 is all I need in the world honestly I would watch a whole show that was just those three growing up
I have only just now noticed Suigetsu as third baseman. This ninja baseball game and season in general raise so many questions
Noooo Gaara don’t cry you are gonna be so loved in the future
Rasa, can I just say, from the bottom of my heart, I’m going to yeet you into the sun
“When I look up at the sky, the pain inside my heart feels a little bit better” He’s like 4!!!!!!! >:(
“Instead of a mother, you get to have me, Lord Gaara” Yashamaru: Self-Diagnosed Mumncle
Ngl baby Gaara’s recollection of Karura is nothing like she looked like
I really don’t care for this new Iruka voice I just keep listening to him like ‘that’s not the sound of Naruto’s dad!!’
I will admit him spooking the sleeping children was cute I don’t know why I always find that so funny kjhgkjhg
“Let me buy into this fight” who taught seven-year-old Naruto to gamble
Christ alive the implication that Naruto has been doing the sexy jutsu since he was seven who will put this boy in ninja therapy
If Orochimaru had just continued to be Jiraiya’s long-suffering friend he might be half-endearing but alas he is fecal matter personified
“Come on out, I made plenty, so you might as well stay and eat” Hjgjfjgfgffg I’m not sure what’s funnier about this scene the implication that Obito and Rin both independently followed Kakashi home without noticing each other, or that Kakashi did notice and rather than question this turn of events was just like “Guess I should make more fish”
“When you’re older, do you think you’ll become a chef” I would pay to see the AU where Kakashi becomes a professional chef why couldn’t that have been his Road to Ninja persona
Ngl I spent the first half of Kakashi’s minisode wondering if Sakumo was dead or simply too depressed to take care of Kakashi and I think dead is the less upsetting outcome
“It’s no fun when you’re not around, Kakashi” Obitooooooooooooooo
I’m not saying it’s suspicious that Sakumo is given two different depictions of his grave site in the anime but Sakumo fucked an alien and I stand by that statement
All I remember from Sasuke Shinden is that a character called Sasuke “Sassy” as a nickname and if they do that in the Eng dub I won’t survive
“[Deep sigh] Alright Sakura, what is it?” Fhfjhfkjh what’s your damage Kakashi can’t your kids come to visit when people start exploding
God Sakura and Ino’s relationship is the realest.... she went to the Hokage bc her gal was worried abt her family friend and then comforted her from her loss... the looooooooove
Hinata not to devalue your work in any way but why did u collapse after poking one (1) man in the chakra point isn’t gentle fist based in taijutsu
Fhjfhkjhf I’ve seen that gif before of Kakashi knowing that Sakura was thinking about Sasuke but it’s still funny
Sasuke just hanging in the woods with kittycats what kinda redemption journey is this lmao
Ehehehe I’m still not over the fact that Sasuke recognizes Sai’s jutsu and Kakashi uses it to communicate like there are six members of team 7 and this arc PROVES IT HELL YEAH
I can’t believe I forgot the circus ninja oh my god
“There’s good money to be found for performers like us” MOVE OVER EXPLODING HUMANS WHERE’S MY EPISODE ABOUT THE NINJA CIRCUS
Everyone always commenting on the pupils and sclera of the Hyuga and Uchiha but nobody caring about Old Man Demon Eyes from the Bamboo Village:
Tumblr media
You’d think at this point no amount of genjutsu could traumatize Sasuke
They’re leaning wholeheartedly into the ninja cowboy music
That is not how I thought they would pronounce “Sassy” this show is full of twists and turns
“What about reviving the Uchiha clan? You’re the lone survivor right?” said Chino, inquiring about when Sasuke was planning to have vaginal sex
“You really think you’re going to find him inside that seriously scary looking cave?” GASP IT’S TENZO TIME
AIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIE IT’S MY BOYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
“You’re Sasuke, right?” asked Yamato, as if Sasuke had not provided the memorable introduction of stabbing a seasoned ANBU in the shoulder as a sixteen-year-old during a dramatic reunion with his team
“It would be easier for us to keep things coordinated, if you sent us progress reports as you went...” Okay not to be that gal but I love that Tenzo and Kakashi are an “us” in this mini-lecture about how Sasuke should call his father (Kakashi) more often
P sure that’s Yamato’s last speaking role goodbye sweet man we knew ye well
“So does this mean that you trust me?” GO TO JAIL OROCHIMARU
Every time that Orochimaru touches Sasuke I want to leap through the screen you leave that boy alone!!! Go! To! Jail!
Sasuke having to explain his social life to Taka is a dynamic I never knew I needed. What more do I want from Naruto than frames like this:
Tumblr media
"By showing everyone that Sasuke isn’t in the Hidden Leaf Village and that he’s still out journeying around the world, it reduces the possibility that the village will be harmed” “So are you saying that Sasuke has to keep travelling forever” “That might be so” I can’t believe the entirety of Taka came up with a better explanation for Sasuke staying outside Konoha than Kishimoto himself
“Compared to me, the likelihood that Kabuto will return to evil is extremely low”
He still helped kill......... 40,000 people????? Okay dude
I CAN’T BELIEVE OROCHIMARU IS ACKNOWLEDGING HE IS STILL EVIL!!!! GO TO JAIL!!
I’m gonna pretend I don’t see Tenzo following Stranger Danger and he’s on vacation on a beach where he belongs
Fhjkhfkjhfkj what’s the meaning of this Orochimaru you’ve looked the same since you were 25:
Sasuke: No. She’s older than I am
Orochimaru: [Soft gasp] What?
Man I remember vaguely Sasuke being involved in this fight based on the Tenzo novel scene later on but hoo boy I do not like this
SCREAMMMM TENZO TRYING TO PROTECT PPL IN THE AREA HE’S HELPING
“I can’t make direct contact with him, so I better go now” I hope it is because you filed a restraining order, Yamato
“To increase the rarity, what I’ve even done is, had all but one person in a clan killed” at this point En Oyashiro is just trying to bait Sasuke
God I love how righteous Sasuke is being rn like this is the kind of dismantling of oppression I wanted for him instead of sad murder times
This battle is bonkers:
Villain: Looks like you brought a sword to a dodgeball fight
Sasuke: Looks like you brought a dodgeball to a magic eyes fight!!
Well I certainly breezed past this part of Sasuke Shinden hello Fushin
I find it hard to believe that anyone but Naruto could best Sasuke rn
I keep joking that those eyes in the sky look like Tenzo but I’m right and I should say it
What a long, drawn-out and slightly suspicious backstory for Chino (looking at you, Fushin of two personality types)
“But now you’re still able to travel freely... and that is all because you have people who love and protect you” Team 7 cutaway with closeups of Sakura and Naruto, Narusasusaku game strong
“For the Leaf’s nourishment, your entire clan was absorbed by your village’s Roots” wow what a shitty time for such an excellent pun
Unbelievable kkhkjhfk and by this I mean completely believable:
Chino: Please explain your change of heart re: village corruption
Sasuke: I got a boyfriend
Unbelievable x2:
Chino: KILL ME
Sasuke: Consider this.... you have.... boy who is friend. Good enough
Chino: Wow Sasuke, you’re right
Lmao @ Kakashi proudly announcing that Sasuke is about to enter an unsanctioned jutsu fight in a bet to free enslaved people how did this letter go “Dear Hokage-dad-Kakashi, I am writing to inform you...”
Even funnier: If Tenzo wrote the letter bc Sasuke is shite at contacting people: “Dear Kakashi-senpai, Brace yourself to be worried and proud—”
“Are you Sasuke’s...” yes Chino, whatever the end of that sentence is, you’re correct
Huh I could’ve sworn at least a good chunk of these freed people go to the Leaf. I didn’t make that conversation up. I have discussed it many times!!! My poor Tenzo cut out for more logical story lines I guess
Omggggggg the Raikage is telling Sasuke about Naruto’s most vulnerable Sasuke moment..... the love!!! Is this the only reason they invited A lmao
En Oyashiro joining Rasa and Hiashi in the Bad Dad Club
I’ve said this before but Naruto and Sakura going on a date to talk about Sasuke is the most legit representation for their relationship I’ve ever seen that’s it that’s what them dating would be like
“You’re just like a one man police force” lol @ them cutting out the fact that Sakura said this bc Sakura’s not allowed to have individual connections to Sasuke and also just like....... how much Sasuke still wants to be a cop kjhgkjhgk baby stop
I’ve belatedly realized that Kakashi types to the beat of the intro music and it makes me giggle
“The adult world can be complicated” is that ur way of saying ‘nepotism’ Kakashi
“I’m startin’ to get a belly” “I don’t want to hear about all that” PLS
“You two are really the only ones who are special to me” aw Shikamaru
That slap was A  Lot, Temari, surely there are better ways to tell Shikamaru you want him to be your boyfriend
“You don’t really think that Sai has—” “Well, he is very innocent.”
Kakashi about Sai: He’s the baby of the family
Sai: I’m the oldest and most experienced of all the youth???
Kakashi: I mark ur ages by when I got you xoxo ur legal age is 3
I’m not sure that that’s the intonation I expected for Hinoko but I guess that’s on me for stereotyping teen girls hahah
“That’s my ninja way” “Our ninja way” I feel like this is shinobi flirtation
The outro with Little Team 7 fading to Big Team 7... I have but one heart
Also the implication that they took a photo immediately post war jhgkjhgkj. Kakashi still has a barely healed stab wound and twenty years of trauma. Sasuke and Naruto both just lost an arm. Also who brought a camera to the battlefield. Who took this picture. (Tenzo waking up from a 224 episode coma: We gotta take a family photo)
“You might consider yourself a member of Team 7, but I wonder if they think the same of you” [Naruto voice] Believe it!!!!!!
“If we just kill the lookouts, it’ll be like easy to get past the checkpoint” okay calm down Soku
Lmao Shikamaru struggling to deal with rebellious teens jhghjkg why are the anime episodes I watch so fitting to my own life
Man not to get 2 real it’s fucked up that Soku fears peace wyd militarism
I don’t really believe that Soku is deserting the village but it’s a good tactic
[Panning to the bird scene at the beginning of this arc] We call that foreshadowing
Komori’s judgement seems to be clouded by his lowkey crush on Soku
“I’ve just been having these really bizarre dreams lately” that’s PTSD Shikamaru
“Feudal lords are always [tyrants] no matter where you go” then why.... do you have.... feudalism.......... [Tobirama screams in the afterlife]
Not to judge these guys so much but like.... ur ANBU and a veteran ninja surely you should have a disguise after faking your death??????? Kakashi, Iruka, what shinobi standards are you teaching exactly?? U didn’t even change ur hairstyles???
“Something similar happened to me as well” what are you... are you talking about when you pretended to be asleep during the Chunin exams because that’s not the same thing as sleeping under a pile of corpses Shikamaru
NOOOOOOOOOO SAI WHY ARE THEY HANGING MY ANGEL FROM A CRUCIFIX
AHHHHHHH I don’t like seeing Sai like this, Kakashi’s right he’s a baby!!
“Let’s just say I’ve found the place where I belong” Fhdjskhfksjhf this is definitely Root Code for something because Kakashi uses this line on Tenzo in his Tsukuyomi dream
“Then why didn’t Naruto come to get me? You and I have never been particularly close, so why were you the one who came here?” LMAO SAI ‘you’re not on my list of eligible rescuers Shikamaru 😒😒😒😒’
“Fret not, to me this is but a trifle” said Ro, lying prostrate on the ground in between groans of pain (same)
I mean... Gengo makes some pretty compelling arguments abt the shinobi system
“The alliance of nations that the Leaf is currently a part of... is only going to maintain a dark, tenuous peace” I mean... Gengo’s right even if he is a dick
“Lord Hokage told me everything... and I had a hell of a time getting it out of him too” “I don’t want to know what you did... I don’t even want to imagine it” JHGKJHGKJHG I WANNA SEE TEMARI INTERROGATING A FORMER ANBU, KAGE-LEVEL NINJA I LOVE IT
Wait are these last twelve outros dedicated to each of the rookie teams + Team Guy bc that would be adorable
JHGJHGGHGJHG DO WE ACTUALLY GET TO SEE TEMARI YELL AT KAKASHI
Update from 3 seconds later: We don’t but Kakashi’s “Euh?” sound as she knocks down his door is still very funny
“Friendship is useless” “If that’s true, then why are you crying right now” he’s been taking Sasuke lessons in his spare time
“Do you know of a man named ‘Zabuza Momochi’” !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
“These are my only friends” said Sai, about two giant cartoon lions
Sai’s genjutsu scene was actually much sweeter in the book bc Naruto, Sakura, Kakashi and Yamato’s chakra were all protecting him inside his own mind but I don’t mind my boy getting a hug
HAHAHAHAHA WHAT IS THIS CUTAWAY TO NARUTO BATHED IN GOLDEN LIGHT ANNOUNCING “RAMEN” LIKE IT’S A WHOLE SENTENCE OKAY STUDIO PIERROT U NEED A BREAK I GET IT
“What in the hell was that?” that was also my question Shikamaru
Shikamaru with full conviction: To be lazy.... that is my dream
Hahahaha it’s Ninja Teen Romance Hours I guess
“Oh, you don’t want to [go out on a date]?” No that’s not what I’m saying” [walks away] TEMARI PLS
“Going on a date without a strategy, would be like trying to fight a tailed beast unarmed” [Nodding] “You have zero chance of winning, that way” I suddenly understand Kakashi’s dating life a lot more
They really rely on you being aware of Naruto the Last huh gjkhgkjhgk there’s been no mention in any of this filler of Naruto and Hinata even being in a relationship to this point as far as I remember
Fhjkfhkjhfkfh poor Iruka none of the kids know he’s President of the Naruto’s Dad Society
“I know I’m supposed to be striving to get ahead in my career, but there’s also a part of me that really wants to just continue teaching kids, one on one” Irukaaaaa <3333333
Looool even as Hokage, Kakashi just drops out of nowhere to give cryptic life advice and then leaves
Smash the statue, Tsukune, don’t let the establishment tell u what to do!!
“Eating ramen everyday isn’t healthy you know” am I to believe that Kakashi, the man who told Naruto, ‘if you're going to be a ninja, you need to eat your vegetables’ is on a ramen-only diet?? Falsehoods
“And it’s all thanks to you Iruka” khjhgkjhgjhg alright.... you win this round KKIR shippers
WHO IS ANIMATING THIS SCENE IT IS BUCKWILD??? There is no character model to speak of, most of the kids don’t have noses, everyone’s upside down or spinning around, and Iruka is... hiding in a frog sign???
Tumblr media
There is no English translation of this caption???? EXPLAIN JAPAN. TELL ME YOUR FROG SECRETS YOU KNOW I LOVE FROGS [INSERT PICTURE OF TENZO HERE]
(Update I looked it up in the sub and the caption offers no more insight. “IRUKA UMINO, AROUND 30 YEARS OLD. STEALTHILY”)
“This is for Hinata, so let’s all try our hardest” Kiba loves Hinata MOST
You know how if you pause in the middle of an animated action, you sometimes linger on an in-between image that looks goofy because it was meant to add to the motion rather than be focused on? This whole episode is animated like one of those images
It’s okay Lee the only dumbbell Naruto is fixated on is Sasuke Uchiha
I know don’t usually post so many images in these liveblogs, but I really need anyone reading this to see the Leaf Village’s semi-canonical Unofficial Mascot Konorin:
Tumblr media
He is??? The love of my life???
“I don’t even have a boyfriend and train every day from morning til night” yes you do. His name is Neji Hyuga and he’s very alive and he’s a jonin sensei and he will buy you all the knives you want after he takes all of Hiashi’s money and redistributes it. In this essay I will—
You see what I mean??? Neji wants to be there for Tenten (and Lee)!!!
Tenten: What would Neji do if he were here now
Neji: [starts manifesting]
“It’s you since you’re a taijutsu specialist, but Naruto and Hinata aren’t” yes????? Hinata is???? She doesn’t use weapons but Gentle Fist is entirely taijutsu??? Why does everyone keep forgetting
KHKGJHKJHGKFHKJHFKJ I CAN’T GET OVER NEJI JUST. MANIFESTING ABOVE LEE’S BED TO GIVE HIM SHITTY WEDDING GIFT IDEAS
“And don’t forget: Hyuga” Neji........ what.... does this mean!!!!!!!!
Why say “Neji” like that Orochimaru and in fact why say anything at all [Konan voice] I’m the Hokage now, the entire criminal justice system is on its way you are going to jail!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I really can’t believe that the Naruto writers looked at Tenzo’s role in Naruto SD and decided “let’s do that.... but worse”
They animated?????????? A smaller Lee??????????? Into Lee’s mouth???????????? As if the animation style wasn’t enough. I need a minute
They are really going full Naruto SD huh??? Cut away skit like a ‘genjutsu’ scne. Lee and Guy playing a married couple and Tenten a baby. Neji in drag. This is a choice
“How can you misunderstand Neji so much” “Even if it’s only as a ghost, I’m sure that Neji would appear” I need. Several minutes
Fhjkhfkjfh Shikamaru’s vision of Gaara, Bee, Kakashi and Tsunade hanging out at this fancy restaurant. Is this who he thinks Kakashi’s social circle is these days (he might be right)
“Okay, I’ll hear you out!” Is this implication of this scene that Temari thinks Shikamaru’s idea of a first date is marriage... and she’s WILLING TO GO ALONG WITH THAT. TEMARI PLS
“Hey Ino, why would you go out of your way to make something I love? Bc she looooves you Sakura
“Sakura, I thought the same thing” GOD JUST GET MARRIED
“It’ll be too late once we go in, I could get all caught up in the mood or something like that” wait........ does Temari think Shikamaru wants to get married or fuck???? Or both??? OH MY GOD
Gaara: Naruto’s getting married.... without meeeeeeeeeee
God I love Gaara’s Blank Period hair it is truly careless and happy hair
“His ramen’s extravagent?” JKGHKHKJH everyone in the Leaf Village trying to convince Gaara that Naruto’s taste is incredibly obnoxious which is true but not in the way being described
Kankuro what’s your damage let Gaara buy a nice and personal present for the love of his life
Every time I think this arc can’t get more ridiculous it exceeds my expectations:
Tumblr media
[Vaguely horrified accompanying dialogue: “The Raikage—” “—Will do the Hidden Cloud Dance?”]
“Well then, Gaara is just going to have to do the Hidden Sand Samba” Ah. Of course. The Hidden Sand Samba. Why didn’t anyone think of this plan before
Gaara is blushing because his new dream is just to samba dance with Naruto into the night
Ahhhhhhhhhhhh Teuchi giving Naruto an “all you can eat forever” coupon that’s cute our sweet boy is so loved
Gaara: My wedding gift to you, Naruto... is me :)
“I’m just disappointed that we aren’t going to get to see you dance, Gaara” you know what that’s fair Kankuro me too
Hahahaha Shino dissing Kiba’s plight for becoming Hokage to these random kids
I can’t pay attention to anything this ninja cat is saying because they’ve got Naruto’s voice and it is very distracting
There’s something to be curious about how it would be if Kiba married into a family that has a contract with the Uchiha lmao
Literally the girl who Kiba is supposed to be in love with is given Hinata’s voice #kibahinarights
“Oh, just take it. Money means nothing to me” the Beekeeper is truly one of the strangest characters in the Naruto universe just conceptually. Why are they wearing a giant bee stinger on their butt?
LMAO @ Kiba having absolutely no self-doubt whatsoever. Goals!!
Shino becoming a teacher after the war is actually one of the post-699 futures I like, good for him!
Iruka sweet man Naruto has compared you to a father like 1500 times have you not overheard him one (1) time
Kakashi is such a dumb stubborn bitch trying to find a way for Naruto to have a happy wedding... I love him
“This is my fault, I never taught him how to treat women! Not that I even really know about that kind of thing of course” Iruka Umino confirmed canonically gay
“I just have to bow my head a little” KKIR: 2; Me: 0
I love this tradition of Hokage boys bowing their heads for cooperation between villages yesssssssssssss
Outro for the whole OG Team 7.... I’m fine everything’s fine I’m good cool cool cool cool cool
The implication that they just sell Kakashi wigs in the village... amazing
I know this is about to be an emotionally poignant moment but what Naruto’s presence is reminding is that the only word he has said in the past 6 episodes is “ramen” LMAO
“I’m going to have to apologize to her for raising you as a such a thoughtless, inconsiderate man” raising you... RAISING YOU..................... TRULY PRESIDENT OF THE NARUTO’S DAD SOCIETY GOD BLESS IRUKA UMINO
LOOK AT THIS CRYBABY NINJA THIS IS WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT ONE OF MY FAVOURITE PARTS OF KONOHA HIDEN WAS HOW IRUKA KEPT BURSTING INTO TEARS OVER NARUTO EVERY OTHER MINUTE THIS IS WHAT BONDS LOOK LIKE
God..................... the Team 7 lover in me just despairs of this final episode bc they’re all separated and also Tenzo needs justice 4 being Kakashi’s co-wedding planner it’s in the book I read it!!!!
I will set aside my feelings to recognize that Kakashi looks very handsome
Goodbye Naruto you were certainly an experience and I mean that in every possible intonation

Wasnt gonna submit a kakashi cause i figured youd get a bunch already like ur tags said lol. So if someone else hasnt already suggested him then kakashi for that ask thing :^]
Tumblr media
hehehehe!!!!
Tumblr media
answers under the cut!
favorite thing about them —there's a lot to love abt kakashi if i'm gonna be honest, but the biggest thing for me is that he DOES care for these kids immensely. he drops by naruto's apartment to give him vegetables, he constantly puts himself in danger to protect the kids, on a couple of occasions he straight up ignores + disrespects the hokage just to listen to naruto ramble about ramen. similarly with yamato—even when sai joins the team, kakashi does make a point of telling sai he's a member of the team, not just Yamato's responsibility, but Kakashi's too...like. he's not great with kids at all. but my god does he try!
least favorite thing about them — 100% the convo with sasuke before sasuke booked it. he fucked that up so royally that i just know the rest of his life he's going to be laying awake in his bed thinking "why did i say that? why did i say any of that? why was my first instinct in that situation to belittle sasuke? Who let me be in charge of children. why did i let myself be put in charge of children." like. it makes sense for him, he really has no children skills, but also im not going to lie thinking about that scene makes me insane. i want to attack kakashi. good god dude, you could've called gai in!! or tenzō!!! why did you say there was nobody in your life who mattered to you. why did you say that to this kid, who like it or not, looks up to you both as a teacher and as the only person left with any attatchment to the uchiha clan + the sharingan, who isn't his murderous brother. i genuinely have to think that he forgot that kids want to be understood, and was just straight up dealing with sasuke as he might a rogue soldier. i'm so. ugh. kakashi... favorite line — "In the Ninja World, those who break the rules are scum, that's true...but those who abandon their friends are worse than scum." its really good for not only understanding kakashi but also the central theme of naruto, but mostly i picked it as my favorite because i remind kate of this when we're playing fortnite + laugh like a hyena afterward. brOTP —okay so. Gai is canonically Kakashi's best friend and i love that so much and respect that and as far as Kakashi is concerned, that is the absolute brotp. If you like Kakashi I think you have to respect this immensely. Gai is without a doubt the most important relationship that Kakashi has!!! they better each other in all ways and they have an undying and complicated friendship built up over decades with trust and dedication.
but also.
this is transparently a Yamato-centric blog, and Kakashi is 100% Yamato's favorite person, so Yamato and Kakashi's friendship is the most important to me personally, even if Yamato is not Kakashi's best friend.
OTP —i'm not a huge ship person, but if i had to pick one it would be kakayamagai nOTP —ehhh?? i'm not a huge ship person. kakaobi puts me on edge a bit i guess? really not my thing. random headcanon — i think his grandmother on sakumo's side was an inuzuka. because of this, after sakumo died, a handful of the inuzuka clan were very adamant that kakashi, by right, should belong to the inuzuka clan as next of kin. kakashi, five years old and freshly traumatized, now the only surviving member of the hatake clan AND incredibly wary of bonds and friendships because he's seen whats happened to sakumo, contested this. they actually got in a legal dispute in front of the hokage. fucking five year old kakashi dully but determinedly saying he's Not going to be an inuzuka, and the inuzuka clan (represented by a headstrong teenage tsume) going "what's is wrong with this ungrateful kid! not every orphan gets this kind of opportunity!" eventually hiruzen sided with kakashi, because hiruzen is morally bankrupt and doesn't care if children raise themselves. once kakashi becomes the 6th hokage, he's subject to occasional visits from tsume where she comes to bully him about visiting the inuzuka compound (under threat of inuzuka clan rebellion without. Peace Talks. over dumplings that kiba's been trying to perfect), and telling him how nice it is to have an inuzuka beneath the hat, and he's just like. ma'am...please...have mercy...
unpopular opinion — i think he would look soooo bad in a suit. he would not look suave or sexy. he could make like the fanciest most well made three piece suit look like a tracksuit he pulled out of the laundry before it went thru the wash. and like. he would! he would delight in that! if you forced this man into a suit, he would purchase one at least two sizes too large for him and hed slump around in it.
he has the hair of a half dried paintbrush, the posture of a puppet with its strings cut, and the general vibe of a dog with a tail between its legs.
not to say that can't be attractive to u if ur into that. its just. u know. he's not going to be james bond if you put him in a suit, u feel me?
he's going to look like a temp who is going to get let go from his accounting firm for making all the cups of coffee from the same keurig pod not realizing that after the first one its just vaguely coffee flavored water, and also for not knowing how to save a file. He probably would know how to save a file but just pretended he didn't to get on somebody's nerves
song i associate with them — Why Can't This Be Easy by Red Vox
So tell me, tell me Why can't this be easy? I've heard it once I've heard it all before So settle down Relax yourself, completely You can't get down if you're always in control
Here out so far It's a long way Long way back I've never been so far before
favorite picture of them
Tumblr media
this one legitimately makes me rlly happy bc like. the original context was funny enough, but since trans naruto tumblr has had fun with it in regard to passing, its SO funny to me!
you pass. 💛

Pairing: MadaraTobirama Word count: 5736 Summary: Protostellar - the earliest phase in the evolution of a new star. It begins with self collapse. And it ends by exploding outward in to light, a new beginning.
Follow the link or read it under the cut!
Chapter 3
No one was really surprised when Tobirama’s team of two grew to three after the incident Madara had witnessed. Orphaned so suddenly and without a strong clan of her own to help find her way, Koharu turned to the first strong adult figure who had proven he would care for her. Considering he was still expected to pull his weight and fulfil his duties to keep the village running, he did pretty well raising three wayward kids without letting any of them feel forgotten in any way.
Although it wasn’t strictly necessary – hadn’t really been for quite some time – Madara continued to sit in on their training whenever he needed a bit of uninterrupted time to himself. The only thing different now was that on the days Tobirama took his kids out for lunch or tea afterwards he began to invite Madara along. The Akimichi and the Utatane both regarded him warily at first, no doubt having heard terror stories of him from their parents, but after a few meals in which he did little besides ignore Kagami’s chatter and haltingly converse with Tobirama they eventually got used to him.
There was a time when he would have been insulted not to be seen as a threat by young children he could squish like little bugs. On the day he realized that he actually felt a little warm to have their trust he dragged Izuna out to the nearest practice field right away and beat the stupid mushy feelings back by sheer force.
It seemed the most natural thing when Torifu showed up to practice one day with another little boy wandering after him wearing a hopeful expression. Hiruzen was the heir of the Sarutobi clan and the son of Sasuke Sarutobi, a very well respected man even though they had only joined Konoha’s peace a mere month after the Yamanaka, Nara, and Akimichi. The boy turned out to be a quick learner, a proper son of his line, and Tobirama welcomed him in to the fold as easily as he had all the others.
Madara watched it all happen with a shaking head, glad of the distance he was allowed to maintain. He was prepared to admit to himself that he was impressed with how well Tobirama handled all those children but it wasn’t something he himself wanted to get involved in. Kids had never been his forte. Just because his lifelong dream was to protect them didn’t mean he wanted to help take care of them. Building a village was enough in his books.
And he was certain their parents would object to him setting them on fire, even if it was in the name of learning.
He did find a certain amount of pride, however, in his observation that the child Tobirama seemed closest to was a member of his own clan. Although the man was fair to each of them and never showed favoritism when they were all together, it was Kagami who could be found poking around his office in the tower, Kagami whom he most often escorted home, and Kagami who Madara frequently had to drag away from Tobirama’s house on the fringes of the Senju compound as he was marching his way over to do today.
Dragging the wayward child home wasn’t technically his duty but after passing by a few clansmen gossiping about the situation Madara figured he might as well gather his own proof that there was nothing untoward happening before anyone else thought to. Honestly, he wondered, what did they even think was happening when those two spent time together?
Oh no, education and a proper role model. How awful.
He was admittedly a bit surprised when Kagami answered the door instead of the actual resident, although not much. Most likely Tobirama had felt his chakra approaching and sent the boy over.
“Madara-sama,” Kagami greeted him. “Am I in trouble? Is sensei in trouble? But we didn’t even do anything!”
“Calm down. No one’s in trouble. I’m setting rumors to rest, if you must know. Am I to be allowed in this time?”
“Sensei! Can he come in?” A muffled voice called back from somewhere deeper in the home, prompting Kagami to beam up at his clan head and wave him inside. “I’m helping sensei look for one of his old sword. He says he’ll let me train with it! So cool!”
Madara couldn’t say he had ever given much thought to what the inside of Tobirama’s home would look like. Before peace was made he might have imagined walls dripping with weaponry and the heads of his enemies mounted on pikes in every corner. After getting to know him slightly better over the years, if asked, Madara would probably have guessed that Tobirama’s home would be clean to the point of sterility, everything in its place and obsessively organized just as his desk was in the Tower.
What he never would have guessed was exactly what he found: a mess.
Actually, ‘mess’ did not properly encapsulate the disaster he found inside. There wasn’t much room to move between the massive stacks of books and paper, flammable material as far as the eye could see. Strange, he thought, for someone who spent so many years at war with a clan of fire users. He spotted Tobirama down the hall, weaving through the confusion with practiced ease, and made his way in that direction as carefully as possible; a single foot out of place could bring down a veritable landslide of parchment and he really didn’t want to listen to the yelling.
Kagami, he noticed, was bouncing ahead of him with a practiced effortlessness. Clearly the young lad had visited his sensei often enough to grow familiar with the maze he lived in. Madara wondered if the visits were solely educational in nature or if Kagami was the only one willing to come in here to pull Tobirama’s head out of the ink and back in to the real world. Anyone who lived like this clearly didn’t have very many visitors.
“Did you leave it in your room, maybe?” Kagami asked from where he stood in what might have been a kitchen if not for the five heavy tomes resting in the sink and the open, unplugged fridge filled with oddly shaped bits of machinery.
“Of course not,” Tobirama said. “My room gets a bit messy sometimes; I’d lose it in there.”
Both eyes twitching, Madara wrestled with himself not to comment on that statement. He forced himself to simply forge ahead until he had joined Tobirama in the main room then stood as still as possible to avoid upsetting anything.
All around him was just more of the same. Books stacked upon books, folders and binders and mountains of loose paper. Inkwells and brushes dotted the chaos at random intervals, often stuck inside empty beakers or shoved between the gears of odd sculptures or figures or – actually Madara had no idea what those things were. Curiosity itched under his skin but in order to get to any of them he would need to stick himself to the wall with chakra just to avoid making a mess.
Well, more of a mess.
“It’s not in the pantry,” Kagami said, sticking his head around the corner. “But I did find those explosive tags you said went missing.”
“Well, that’s something.” Their host didn’t look all that concerned about explosives having been lost or discovered in his home. Madara’s eyes began to twitch again.
“This place is…full,” he caught his own outburst just in time. “What is all this stuff?” Up on his toes to feel around the top of a bookcase, Tobirama cast a preoccupied gaze around the room.
“Research projects. Notes for my experiments. Paperwork for the clan. Technically I’m Head now that Brother is Hokage, although our people still bring their issues to him anyway out of habit. He’s nicer, I suppose.” He shrugged and dropped back down to his heels before moving over to another bookshelf and reaching up to search on top of that one.
Despite the fact that he agreed with that – Hashirama was indeed the more cheerful of the two siblings – it didn’t sit quite right with Madara how casually it was said, as though it was only natural and correct for his entire clan to pass him over for a duty that should belong to him. And for such a trivial reason as well! Madara was well aware that most of his clan preferred Izuna’s company to his own yet none of them had ever hesitated to come directly to him with their problems.
He was pulled from his thoughts by Kagami squawking in panic and disappearing under the collapse of an overloaded bookshelf. Tobirama watched with a passive eye.
“Anything hit you on the head?” he asked mildly.
“No. But I found my kunai holster!”
“We’ve been looking for that too,” Tobirama directed his statement to Madara, who slowly shook his head from side to side.
“How can you live like this?”
Pausing to give him a look of confusion, Tobirama shoved his arm in behind a bulging cabinet stuffed with binders. “Live like what?”
“In this mess! There’s no room to live in here!”
“Ah. Well, I do little with my time besides work, so I suppose that would explain it. I don’t have much else to give my attention to. Aha!” Lighting up with a quiet sound of triumph, he extracted his arm to reveal the sword held in his grasp. It was covered in dust but underneath the dullness of neglect was a well-preserved scabbard covered in old scrollwork and a hilt which tugged at some very uncomfortable memories in Madara’s mind.
Kagami’s head popped out of the mess at his teacher’s exclamation, holding both arms up and letting out an excited, “Woohoo! You found it! Now I get to learn super cool sword moves!”
Madara crossed his arms and hovered at the edges of the room while Kagami chattered on about all the things he was going to learn and Tobirama produced a rag from who-knows-where to clean off the treasure he had unburied. Something about the other man’s words bothered him, although he didn’t fully understand why. He didn’t even understand why any of this mattered to him at all, actually. It seemed that somewhere along the lines of his curious observations he’d been dragged in to the vortex that was Senju Tobirama and begun to care almost without noticing.
Waiting for a moment to speak took a while. Kagami was a fairly excitable kid on the best of days and being promised extra training from his favorite person sent his energy levels through the roof. His younger clansman was already dancing around what small amount of space was available, swinging an imaginary sword at equally imaginary enemies and crowing with triumph every time he slayed a new victim. Another stack of books wobbled dangerously when he bumped them with his hip, forcing Kagami to abandon the slaughter and wrap both arms around them. When the coast was clear he stepped away to look back and forth between the two adults with a sheepish smile.
“Perhaps you should be more careful in someone else’s home,” Madara grumbled.
“I’m gonna be an awesome shinobi and grow up to be a hero! I’ll be able to kill anybody I want!”
“That is not how I would describe a hero, nugget,” Tobirama gently reprimanded his student. He handed the now clean sword and scabbard over then wound his way towards the next room as he spoke over his shoulder. “Simply being stronger than your opponents does not a hero make.”
Madara couldn’t help but privately agree with that. If strength were all the qualifiers needed then there would be heroes innumerable roaming the land, keeping the people safe. Wars would be a thing of the past.
“Well then what does it mean to be a hero? I thought it was just…you know…being super strong and saving the day and…maybe there’s a damsel in distress?”
“You’ve been reading too many of my brother’s novels. I thought I told you to just set them on fire if you found any in here.”
“I know! I know! You didn’t answer my question!”
Tobirama paused in the doorway and turned halfway, although he did not look up. His eyes turned distant as he contemplated how to phrase the answer his student wanted and Madara frowned, surprised that he was actually giving it so much thought. It was a simple enough question.
“A hero is someone who moves forward, I suppose. Not just a person who is strong, without fear or doubt, but a person who goes on in spite of those things and gets the job done anyway. Bad people can feel these things too but what separates a hero from a villain is that, at the end of the day, the hero’s actions will have made the world a better place - even if only in some small way.”
Finished speaking, he reached out and pulled something off a random pile as though to pretend the conversation had never happened and make himself look busy. Madara continued to stare while Kagami bounced up on to his toes and clasped his hands together.
“So just like you, sensei! You’re a hero!”
“No.” Tobirama’s voice came sharp, dropping a startled Kagami back on to his heels. “A hero succeeds in his efforts to make the world better. If they weren’t able to do the right thing then the world would not remember them so fondly. I am no hero; I’m just me.”
“Well you’re my hero,” Kagami retorted stubbornly. Tobirama lifted his head finally to stare at his student, eyes wide with something uncertain in their depths. Madara watched the man shift uncomfortably and wondered just what was going through his mind. When at last he spoke again it was in a quiet tone, his words shadowed by whatever dark thoughts were clouding his expression.
“Perhaps you should find a better man than me to call your hero, nugget.”
Cautiously, almost as though he were questioning his own movements or expecting to be pushed away, he reached out one of his hands and laid it gently atop his student’s head. Immediately Kagami lit up like the northern lights, happy to have even a scrap of affection from his chosen role model. Then Tobirama turned back to the doorway and slipped off in to the next room.
While his student resumed his game of make believe, now fully equipped with an actual sword, Madara wondered if he would ever learn something new about Tobirama which did not surprise him. Around every corner there seemed to be some new bit of information which threw his entire understanding of the man out the window, forcing him to look from new angles. How had he gone from pretending this man didn’t exist just to keep the peace to getting so attached that seeing Tobirama down made himself feel down as well?
Setting that thought aside to dissect later, Madara watched Kagami bounce around until he was forced to step in and stop the boy from enthusiastically chopping a wooden cabinet in half with his new sword.
“That is not a toy,” he admonished. “Certainly not something to be played with indoors.”
“You’re right! I’m gonna go show Torifu!”
“Use the practice dummies, if you must, but under no circumstances are you and those friends of yours to start mock sword battles until you have at least some instruction on how to wield that thing.” Madara glared until Kagami nodded, obviously disappointed that his plans had been seen through so easily, but the boy was smiling again in an instant while rushing towards the door.
“Bye sensei! Don’t forget to go get dinner!”
Tobirama’s voice mumbled indistinctly from wherever he had disappeared to. After watching to make sure that Kagami made it out of the house without further incident, Madara very carefully picked his way over to the doorway where Tobirama had disappeared and looked around until he had located his host.
He found the man rummaging through the massive amount of paper covering what might have at one point been a dining room table. Even underneath the table there wasn’t any space, all of it filled up with stacks of books on subjects ranging from the cardiovascular system of the human body to the topography of the Land of Iron. At the moment Tobirama seemed to be most interested in shuffling stacks of parchment from side to side and peeking in behind them all.
“Did you chase my student away?” he asked. Madara huffed.
“Of course not. This isn’t my home to chase someone out of. Although I can’t see why you let him bother you in your personal space so often.”
“I only have so much time before he outgrows me. Call me sentimental but I prefer to enjoy what time I have.” Tobirama shrugged and moved another pile, wrinkling his nose when he didn’t find whatever it was he was looking for.
“Sentimental? You?” Madara snorted. “What do you mean outgrow you?”
He noted the way Tobirama’s movements stuttered and the way he seemed to almost be making a point of not looking back at his guest, answering in a quiet voice. “They all do eventually – outgrow their teacher, that is. Someday I will have taught him all that can be learned without practical experience and he will have no more need of me. It happens with all students; nothing to make a big fuss over.”
“Well it’s not as if he’s never going to speak to you again once he no longer requires a full time teacher.”
“If he follows the pattern of my other students, it is more likely than you think.”
“Other students? What other students?”
“Before the village was formed it was one of my duties to train the younger generations of my clan. Now with less people needed on the front line so much and patrols split between all of the different clans there are more people available to teach the children. I have other things which require my attention so that duty no longer falls to me these days. Kagami and Torifu’s request that I take them on as students was quite unexpected.”
There was something in the way he spoke, a careful detachment which Madara recognized all too well, that said Tobirama cared a lot more than he was trying to let on. Suppressing emotions was something he was very familiar with and he happened to know that it usually went hand in hand with pain – the desire to hide it or to hide from the possibility of feeling it.
“Are you telling me that none of your previous students ever visit you? Speak to you? Seek your opinion on something?”
“Why should they? I am no longer their teacher.”
Madara frowned at him, irritated and offended in a way he preferred not to examine. With a huff he reached over and caught the back of Tobirama’s shirt, hauling him up out of the paper maze he was half buried in, shifting his grip to the man’s sleeve and turning for the entrance hall.
“Come on. We’re leaving.”
“I beg your pardon?”
“You can beg all you like but you’re still coming with me.”
“Where are we going?” Tobirama seemed suspiciously willing to go where Madara was leading him and that was just another thing which Madara prudently choose not to focus on right now. When he answered with little more than a typical ‘you’ll see’ and received no more protests it spoke to a strange sort of trust which he wasn’t sure he had earned, let alone deserved.
Nevertheless he refused to hesitate now that they were already stumbling out the front door. Several streets away Madara noticed that he was still holding Tobirama’s sleeve and that his companion hadn’t said anything about being dragged around basically by the hand. He did his best to convince himself it was only that the shock had rendered Tobirama speechless because the thought that it could be for any other reason made him feel a confusing combination of hot and cold he couldn’t even begin to decipher.
Knowing how jilted and awkward he sounded whenever he tried to make pointless small talk, Madara opted not to say anything until they had made their way across the village and deep in to the heart of the Uchiha district. He finally allowed them to come to a stop in front of a little bakery marked by a sign with a picture of a pie burned in to the wood rather than carved.
“I hope you like sweets,” he murmured, tugging once more to drag the other man in with him.
“Not most of them,” Tobirama replied in a distracted voice. “What are we doing here?”
“Susumu-baa-san!” Ignoring him for the moment, Madara slammed the door of the little bakery open and hollered in to the empty looking interior. “Susumu-baa-san! I’m hungry you old bat; feed me!”
From behind the counter there came a sweet little chortle. “Oh ho ho, hungry are we? I’ll feed you burnt pie shells if you don’t stop calling me grandmother!” As soon as she had finished speaking her head popped up from behind the counter and Madara had a moment to thoroughly enjoy the stunned expression on Tobirama’s face.
Susumu was the tiniest woman Madara had ever met, diagnosed with a form of dwarfism he had never learned to pronounce, but he had yet to see her let that get in the way of living her life. Her confidence was as big as she was small and she wasn’t above using her size to let people underestimate her, usually followed quickly by putting them in their place with more violence than should ever be possible from someone no taller than a child who hadn’t hit double digits yet.
“Oh and who is this little morsel you’ve brought with you?” Susumu hopped up on to a little stool to lean over the counter, narrowing her eyes at a flustered-looking Tobirama. “Unless these old eyes of mine deceive me, you must be Senju Tobirama! What in sage’s name is a delightful little snack like yourself doing hanging around with a soggy old crust like Mada-kun?”
“I am not a soggy crust!”
“Uh…” Tobirama blinked, clearly unsure how to react to being called a snack. Luckily for him, Madara allowed that one to pass without making a big deal about it.
“Susumu-baa-san was my sensei when I was young. Everything I know about warfare she taught me – painfully, I might add.”
“Ay, you bled more than a few times under my tutelage Mada-kun but you never once died, did you?”
“Didn’t I tell you to feed me, you old bat?”
While Susumu waved a thick wooden spoon around threateningly and Madara dodged, both of them spouting vitriol even as they grinned openly at each other, Tobirama could do nothing but stare at them. Madara allowed him a few undisturbed moments to let the reason he had brought the man here sink in.
Not everyone forgot where they came from once they reached the top and not all students abandoned their teachers once they had learned all they could. The Uchiha were taught to venerate their elders and the teachings they had passed on. After all, without those teachings the next generation would not survive passed their first enemy encounter and there would be no one left to carry on the Uchiha name. He wanted Tobirama to know that Kagami would never outgrow him, even if all his other students did, that the boy he had chosen would always choose him in return. Putting that in to words, however, would have mortified them both. Showing him was much easier.
As they bickered Madara watched his old sensei disappear behind her counter, ducking inside the glass case for a few moments and coming back out with a tray of goodies. Tarts and muffins and gourmet donuts all rested against each other, each in several delicious looking flavors, and the second it hit the wooden countertop Tobirama snapped out of his daze to zero in on one side of the tray.
“Looks like someone knows exactly what he wants. Good, good. I like that.” Susumu slid the goodies closer and produced two small cardboard containers. “Well go on then, take a few.”
“How much?” Tobirama asked carefully, his eyes not moving from his target. She snorted at him.
“Don’t insult me. You’ll take them for free, of course.”
“Are you certain?”
Madara snatched up his own container and went straight for the sourdough donuts. “Quit acting like you’re a polite member of society and just take some free food, Senju. Don’t you know how to take advantage of old ladies?”
He grinned and dodged another swipe from Susumu while carefully noting that Tobirama choose the blueberry flavor of both tarts and muffins, avoiding the donuts altogether. Why he might need that information was beyond him but he still took a moment to tuck it away in the back of his mind before clapping his hand down on the man’s shoulder and looking over at his old teacher.
“Always a pleasure,” he told her smugly, rattling his box of donuts. Susumu huffed and waggled a finger.
“What a rotten boy, using a gentile lady for food like this. You owe me a nice evening out for tea. Come by sometime when you actually have time to talk to this lonely biddy!”
“Gentile. Ha.” Still, Madara hitched up his spoils and acquiesced with a nod, steering Tobirama out of the bakery as he called back over his shoulder. “I’ll bring you tea sometime next week, sensei. Probably after my meeting with the elders. You can listen to me rant about how annoying they are.”
“I look forward to it, brat.”
He shook his head and pushed Tobirama out on to the street, immediately ripping open his box to liberate one of his favorite treats. Susumu was infamous among their clan for her ferocity in battle but she was also well-known in more than one marketplace as an incredible baker. Rather than taking the time to savor it Madara shoved the whole thing in his mouth and groaned at the taste, chewing it with relish as he led the way back through the streets of his clan’s district.
At his side Tobirama remained silent until they reached the gates leading out in to the rest of the village, where both of them paused a little awkwardly.
“Why did you bring me here?” his companion asked. Madara huffed.
“If you can’t figure that out then you’re not half the genius everyone seems to think you are.” He sent the man a smug look, unrepentant in the face of the flat expression he got in return.
After the flicker of irritation had cleared Tobirama gave him a slow nod of thanks, holding his gift tightly in both hands, and Madara had the impression that the man was resisting the urge to bow formally. Just the thought of such a gesture from this person was embarrassing enough to make him avert his gaze.
Neither of them bothered with goodbyes as they went their separate ways. Satisfied that he had seen enough today to put his clansmen’s worries to rest, Madara turned towards home to enjoy the rest of his afternoon in the comfort of his own living room. The next time someone pretended to be worried for Kagami’s safety he would have his own testimony prepared and waiting to disprove their claims; if they wanted to stir trouble with people they were supposed to be at peace with then they were going to have to come up with something better than their usual obvious lies.
Relaxing was not to be, however, as he walked in to his living room only to find Izuna there with a bowl of grapes and one of Madara’s novels open across his lap.
Having lived in the same room for their entire childhood, the two of them had both been ecstatic to each have separate homes when the village was first built. Being able to claim so much space as their own had sounded wonderful to a couple of boys who barely managed not to run each other over every five minutes and at first it had been just as wonderful as they always imagined.
Within a month they were both lonely. Neither of them had ever learned to live on their own and as much as they had hated living nearly on top of each other before it was just as hard to live without each other. But there were still times when Madara wished he had the heart to insist upon his own privacy; times like now when he could see the tension in Izuna’s shoulders which told him that the younger man had been lying in wait for him. Whatever it was, he regretted that his good mood was likely about to be ruined.
“I’m not sorry for whatever I did and I am definitely going to do it again,” he announced without preamble, marching through to the kitchen to put his donuts away. No response came. When he came back in to the living room Izuna was still sitting there with his bowl of grapes, popping one of them in his mouth with absolutely no expression on his face.
“Well, it’s not so much something that you’ve done as something you’re doing. And I don’t need you to be sorry, I just need you to explain.”
“Explain what?” Madara sank cautiously down in to his favorite armchair.
“What is going on between you and Tobirama?”
Struggling to keep his face straight, Madara ground out, “I’m afraid I don’t know what you could be implying. What do you mean by ‘going on’ between us?”
“Brother, don’t play dumb. It suits you too well.”
“Hey!”
Izuna shifted the bowl of grapes so he could lean forward and pin Madara in place with both eyes. “Nii-san, what are you doing? You’ve been spending all your free time with him lately and I don’t think you realize how often you’ve been bringing him up in conversation. It’s like you’re obsessed.” He paused to bring his ponytail over one shoulder and tug anxiously at the end. “I’m not judging or anything, I just want to know what’s going on before the rumor mills spit out the wrong conclusion. Are you two…dating?”
“What!? Dating!? Me and Tobirama dating? How could – that’s not even – why would you–!” Madara continued to splutter as Izuna regarded him thoughtfully, sitting back once more to shake his head.
“Oh shut up,” he said. Madara’s jaw snapped shut.
“You can’t just say things like that to people without warning!”
“Answer the question properly, Nii-san. What are you doing with Tobirama?”
Lifting one finger as though to make a point, Madara hesitated before dropping it again. “I have no idea.” When Izuna gave him a stern look he scowled back. “I don’t! Look, I found out something important that I didn’t know before and it made me – let’s say curious.”
“Curious enough to start spending your every waking moment with an asshole like Senju Tobirama?”
“He’s not an asshole! Don’t look at me like that! I’m a grown man and I am allowed to change my opinion if I uncover new information on the subject!”
“Ugh. You’re starting to sound like he does when he goes off about all his dumb experiments.”
“Tobirama’s experiments are for the betterment of this village and everyone who lives in it – including you! So you would benefit from improving that negative attitude. I have it on good authority that the jutsus he invented have saved your life on more than one occasion.”
Izuna peeled back his lips in disgust and looked away from a moment, avoiding that accusation altogether. He couldn’t refute it anyway; he was the one who had come home griping about how irritated and disappointed in himself he’d been for needing Tobirama, of all people, to pull his chestnuts out of the fire. It seemed he didn’t appreciate the reminder.
Once he had composed himself Izuna turned back to his brother and made an effort to speak more calmly, less like he was making any accusations of his own.
“Alright let’s just break this down to the bare bones then. Would you say that it is still true that you hate the guy?”
“No.” Madara answered quickly enough to startle himself and flushed but straightened his back to face the next question bravely.
“Would you call him a friend?”
Giving that a serious moment of thought, Madara breathed, “I would, yes.”
“Okay. Weird, but moving on. You deny that you two are dating but…would you like to?”
Madara stared at his younger brother and worked his jaw soundlessly, unable to answer. His brain ran a mile a minute as all the things he had been trying not to think about and putting off to deal with later came rushing back to him all at once, the protectiveness and the empathy he had been ignoring because he wasn’t ready to deal with what it might imply. Not too long ago he’d been marveling over how attached he had become but facing the truth of that now was more terrifying than he’d thought it would be.
From his spot on the sofa Izuna watched his older brother struggle, his frown growing more and more concerned by the moment. Madara wasn’t sure whether it was concern for a sibling’s health or consternation that there might actually be romantic feelings for the man who almost kill him but he didn’t want to know.
Eventually Izuna’s curiosity because too much for him and he asked the one question Madara had been hoping they could gloss over.
“What was the thing you found that made you so curious?” he asked. Madara breathed deeply and met his eyes, allowing his most precious person to see the conflict within him.
“He thinks we’re soulmates. Tobirama might be my soulmate.”
Izuna’s jaw nearly hit the floor and Madara thought silently that, even after all the time he’d had to get used to the idea, he still sort of agreed with that sentiment.

The first thing Sasuke needed to think about was who he could trust with the knowledge of his future. He needed to carefully consider what he was sharing with the people around him. Mikoto and Fugaku—they can’t be his parents any longer if he was going through with this—were staring at him in awe, taking in his appearance. They were good people, Sasuke knew, but they were currently in a precarious position. If Sasuke was going to stick around, they would be the ones covering for him. This would definitely throw even more suspicion on the Uchiha Clan’s activities. The Clan was already going to try and plan a coup in a couple of years; Sasuke wasn’t sure he wanted to contribute to the negative feelings the village held towards his Clan.
So, what to tell them?
“You’re so big,” Mikoto whispers, her eyes shining. “Just look at you!”
Sasuke let himself smile at the comment, a bubble of wistfulness growing in his chest. He never got the attention he had so craved from his parents as a kid, and to have their focus completely on him, for them to be staring at him with pride shining on their faces, was certainly a scene in which he never thought he would find himself in.
“What rank did you reach?” Fugaku asks, looking Sasuke up and down.
Sasuke shifts, his cloak lightly swishing back and forth. He wondered if it was suspicious that he wasn’t wearing any village identifying clothing. He didn’t have the uchiwa fan on him anywhere either. Oh well, he dismissed, things to worry about for another time.
“Genin,” he replied with some amusement. Once everything had started to calm down after the war, Sasuke hadn’t seen any point in taking any tests to raise his rank. He hadn’t stayed in the village anyway, so it wasn’t like he had much of a chance to take the chunin and then jonin exams. People were more than aware that he was no genin.
“That’s all?” Fugaku’s proud look has turned into a frown, his relaxed observation of Sasuke turning more sharp as he gazes at Sasuke’s form, still hidden behind his cloak.
“I took the chunin exams at one point, but wasn’t promoted. Never got around to taking it again,” Sasuke responds with a light shrug. They were his family, but until he had a more concrete plan, there was no reason for them to know what Sasuke could do; just how much he was capable of.
Fugaku is still frowning at him, a look of disapproval clear on his face, but Mikoto is still smiling gently at him, just happy to see him.
“We were just sitting down for breakfast! Why don’t we head back to the kitchen and talk while we eat? Itachi, go get your brother out of his room.”
Sasuke paused, his mind suddenly remembering that his older brother was stationed behind him. Sasuke turned and looked over his shoulder, making eye contact with the younger man.
He looked so young. Sasuke etched Itachi’s young, untroubled face into his mind, trying to take in details that he had long since forgotten. Itachi had made many mistakes, had put Sasuke through a type of hell that no one had ever deserved to go through, but he was still Sasuke’s older brother, the man who—while misguided—tried to do everything in his power to keep Sasuke alive. It was nice seeing the curious look on his face; it makes him look alive.
“Yes, kaa-san,” Itachi replied calmly, his voice never wavering as he made eye contact with Sasuke. They stared at each other for a few seconds before Itachi quietly slid open the door and headed out into the hall, turning off towards the direction of the bedrooms.
“Come,” Mikoto said cheerfully, walking to Sasuke and, while advertising her movements clearly, softly put her hand on Sasuke’s left shoulder. Sasuke allowed it, not letting his flinch show. He had gotten used to others avoiding touching him on his left side. With his arm quite clearly not there anymore, people had the tendency to avoid looking at it. The only time someone would go for it would be when they thought they saw a weakness he was carrying. Sasuke allows Mikoto to lead him out of the room and it’s when she moves her hand down slightly, her fingers grazing the empty area below his stub that he had a revelation. They couldn’t see his missing arm, he realized.
Mikoto paused for a second as they walked towards the kitchen, a flash of something going through her eyes, before she continues on her way, her hand once more upon his shoulder. He allows her to push him towards the table, taking a seat as she prepares a setting for him. Fugaku comes in next, his frown still ever-present on his face. From behind him, a small head pops out.
He had thought Itachi looked young. His own face stared back at him, oh so curious with just a tinge of uncertainty and fear. He was tiny at this age, his cheeks full and his face prone to blushes whenever he felt embarrassed. Sasuke hadn’t felt like that in so long that it was rather jarring to see himself flush when met with an unwavering gaze.
“Itachi says you came from the future,” young Sasuke whispers curiously, inching his way towards his older counterpart.
Sasuke makes sure his smile is tranquil, nothing but kind feelings on his face and that they are the only feeling radiating from him. There was no reason to spook his younger self. “He’s right.”
Younger Sasuke perks up, his eyes widening. “I travel through time?!”
Sasuke nods, not saying anything when Itachi appears, taking younger Sasuke’s hand and maneuvering him into sitting next to their mother instead of beside Sasuke. Itachi, with no indication of his tactical move, takes the empty spot next to him.
Itachi doesn’t trust him. That’s certainly new, Sasuke thinks with an internal chuckle. This entire experience is causing havoc with his emotions; especially if he’s started chuckling.
“I did, yes,” Sasuke finally tells his younger self. Sasuke has travelled through time. His younger self might not, not with the changes Sasuke has already made with his presence.
“That’s so cool!” younger Sasuke shouts, his round eyes shining with glee and amazement. His grin is wide and it makes Sasuke’s mouth hurt in sympathy at the stretch.
“Sasuke-bo, eat your natto,” Mikoto interrupts, gesturing towards the younger Sasuke’s untouched food.
“But kaa-chan,” younger Sasuke whines, his attention briefly taken off his time travelling counterpart, “I don’t like natto!”
“Sasuke,” Fugaku interjects gruffly, “Uchiha do not whine. They do as their parents tell them.”
His younger self continues to pout, though he does start taking small bites of the fermented soy beans.
“You too, Jikan-kun,” Mikoto encourages, turning to scold Sasuke. Sasuke blinks, jolted by the sudden address. He supposes it is quite confusing to address both of the Sasuke’s in the room by their shared names. He lets it go, but can’t help making a face at the natto in front of him. Mikoto lets out a breathy chuckle, smiling brightly at him as she says, “You still make the same faces!”
Sasuke glances at the younger Sasuke, sees the indignant look on the child’s face, and quickly clears his own face of emotion. “I haven’t eaten natto in almost ten years.”
Mikoto blinks at the comment, surprised. “Do I stop making it for some reason? It’s your tou-san’s favorite.”
Sasuke calmly replies, “Once I’m older I spend a lot more time eating at the training grounds.” Sasuke, after the massacre, had made his own food and packed it, that way he wouldn’t have to stop training, even when he became hungry.
“Oh, I hope you didn’t overwork yourself!” Mikoto fretted.
“You wouldn’t have let me,” Sasuke confesses. It’s true; if his mother had been alive she would’ve surely made him attend at least one meal with the entire family.
Mikoto’s returning grin is mischievous, a wink sent in his direction letting him know that she assumed she must have done something to get him back into the house and spending time with his family. It makes his chest ache. Seeing his mother, her smile so very beautiful, so concerned for his wellbeing is sending a pain throughout his chest.
The five of them settle down, eating in a relaxed quiet. Younger Sasuke is done first, the little boy waiting patiently at the table as the rest of his family eats. Itachi finishes next and, with a silent glance exchanged between father and son, bundles up his younger brother, announcing his intentions of giving his little brother a bath. Younger Sasuke whines, wanting to ask Sasuke more questions, but Itachi insists that Sasuke bathe before he can leave the house for the day. Both of them are gone the next second and Sasuke can feel the heavy stares of the other two set themselves on him.
“How long has it been gone?” is the first thing Mikoto asks, her voice sad as she looks at him. Fugaku raises his eyebrow slightly, obviously not in the known about what Mikoto is talking about, but curious for his answer nonetheless.
Sasuke debates with himself for a moment. He can’t hide it, Mikoto knows after all, but he’s hesitant to let them know about his disability. He was very much convinced that it let people underestimate him. People would take a look at him and assume that he was weak. H had used it to his advantage once or twice. This, however, was different. This was the family he had lost far too soon all those years ago. Would they take one look at his arm and recoil as the image of their still young son overlay his own? It was too late now to back out anyway.
Sasuke shrugs out of his cloak, allowing his empty left sleeve to be seen by the two diagonal from him. Mikoto lets out a faint gasp, her gaze locked onto the empty sleeve, while Fugaku’s eyes only widen to indicate his surprise.
“I lost it a few years ago,” Sasuke answers, taking his cloak into his hand and setting it down beside him.
“Does it hurt still?” Mikoto enquires softly, her gaze full of pity.
Sasuke doesn’t let the pity bother him. He made the decision himself to not get a replacement arm made out of Hashirama cells. His lack of arm is a reminder of who he is now.
“No. It hasn’t for a while.”
“Who did it?” Fugaku’s voice is hard. Sasuke fights the urge to straighten his back, not wanting to break his relaxed posture.
“Does it matter? They won’t do it again,” Sasuke tells Fugaku, his voice letting the older man know that he wouldn’t be getting a name from Sasuke. This world won’t be one where it would be necessary for Sasuke to fight Naruto. Sasuke won’t let his younger self abandon the village. He won’t allow for there to be a reason to abandon the village.
Fugaku scoffs slightly, his eyes narrowing, but he doesn’t pursue the subject. Instead, he turns to another difficult topic. “We must go to the hokage.”
Sasuke grimaces. He knows that he can’t stay a secret. The Jikan Phenomenon has always been kept from the general public, as well as the other clans, but it’s something that is far too important to be kept from the village’s hokage. Sasuke isn’t sure which hokages have known of the incidents through time, but he’s sure the Sandaime would be one of the village leaders to know about it. If nothing else, he would’ve been informed by either Itachi or Shisui in the event that it somehow effected the rising tensions in the village.
Shisui. Sasuke blinked, startled out of his thoughts. Uchiha Shisui, known as Shunshin no Shisui, played an important part in the upcoming events. Sasuke had learned about Shisui’s role in the attempt to stop the coup. Sasuke also knew about Shisui’s Mangekyo ability, Kotoamatsukami. The man had failed in Sasuke’s past at using said ability to stop the coup, but with Sasuke’s foreknowledge and his help, could Shisui be the answer to his first obstacle at fixing the past to better the future?
“Of course,” he replied eventually, his thoughts struggling to turn from the possibility of Shisui’s part in his future plan. “I’m ready when you are.”

How Could I: Book 1 (Kakashi’s fate)
Tumblr media
9-Intolerable Mission
I nodded then walked over to Sumo and held out my arms "Sumo, I have to go" I said, giving him a sad look "I'm sorry". I immediately saw the disappointment wash over his face. I pulled him into my arms and kissed his head.
~Kakashi's POV~
Seeing Kana hug Sumo, made me think of Obito and how I failed to bring him back safely to his home, to his family. Kana was so upset that she had to leave her brother behind again. I can't say I understood the bond between siblings but I guess it was kind of like the bond between friends. Maybe even like the bond me and Obito shared.
I walked over to Kana and rested my hand on her shoulder "It's time we go, the Hokage is waiting for us" I said causing her to look over at me with a bit a tears collecting by the base of her eyes.
She nodded an set Sumo back down on his feet then waved just before we left.
The further we walked away from her house, the more sorrow painted Kana's face "I'm sorry Kana, I know it's hard for you to leave Sumo again" I apologized.
She shook her head "There's no need to apologize, I'll be okay." Kana paused "I made a promise to Sumo and it's a promise I'm gonna up hold this time" she reassured me flashing confident smirk but I knew she was just pretending, trying not to worry me.
I grabbed  a hold of her hand to grace her with even the slightest bit of comfort. She turned her whole body to face me, and I could see her face light with red "Everything will be okay. I promise."
"Kakashi and Kana this mission is going to be very dangerous. I want you to be especially careful on this mission. There's one certain man out there that wants to take revenge on the Leaf, I think there's someone controlling this man but I'm not sure. That's why I'm sending you out there" Lord Hiruzen sighed, looking a bit tense.
"Don't worry, we'll complete the mission" I assured him. We were dismissed from his office shortly after he explained what we were dealing with exactly. The mission was dangerous, it held many risks. I wasn't even worried about myself, I was worried about Kana.
Now that I figured how I felt about her I couldn't stand the thought of her getting hurt. However, she was a ninja, she new everything that comes with being a ninja. I had to trust that she could take care of herself.
~~~~~~
Even with Kana at my side, I was alone with my thoughts. I kept thinking of the worse case scenario. What's if she got hurt? What if she were to step in front of me and take the full blast of any jutsu? What if...she died because of me? That was a thought I could not, would not bare to think.
I yanked Kana off into a corner where we would be invisible to anyone that might happen to be passing by "Kana?" I asked, more concerned than I've ever been.
She gazed at me with confusion "W-what is it Kakashi?" she replied, resting her palm on my forehead.
"I...I want you to be careful okay? I know that your aware of the risks but I can't help worry about you. Ever since I figured out my true feelings about you, I feel more protective of you" I explained, gazing at her intently.
For some reason I was expecting her to get angry and start chewing me for supposedly underestimating her abilities but instead she just kissed my cheek "I'm worried about you too but I know you can take of yourself so I have to have faith in you. Just like you should have faith in me. I can't stop you from worrying but I can say that I love you and I will always try to return home safe and sound for your sake." she cooed, her voice gentle and soft, I guess that was one of the many reasons I fell in love with her. Her compassion towards others.
We had made it back to the land of Iron sooner than I had hoped but we had a mission to deal with regardless of how I felt.
We dash through the forest on our mission with the whole Anbu team, ready to for just about anything. I won't lie though, a small part of me wished that they weren't there so that it would just be me and Kana but again this was a dangerous mission and we probably need all the help we could get. I was just being greedy.
~Kana's POV~
The land of Iron was a very cold place. I can't say I wouldn't mind a nice warm fire. Everything was going fine until I sensed a very strong chakra up ahead. "Captain, We need to stop. We found the target." I pointed straight ahead from where we were.
Kakashi and the rest of the Anbu looked in that direction "Should we move on?" one anbu asked while they took a few steps toward Kakashi.
Kakashi stopped him with one arm "No, here is the right spot to be if we have to fight. It's an open space so it will be better to the advantage" he stated, scanning the area with his one sharingan eye.
I activated my sharingan just to be on the safe side. It allowed me to see the chakra flow of one's body no matter where they were.
Scanning the area, I then spotted a figure with very powerful chakra. It didn't surprise me in the least, "Kakashi, someone's coming. 2'o clock" I pointed once again toward 2'o clock from our position.
"Alright. You two go on ahead if it's what were looking for we'll come and back you up" Kakashi ordered, getting in a stance holding a kunai.
Two of the anbu headed forward, it was just me and Kakashi left standing at our same place. All of a sudden a thick fog surrounded us "K-Kakashi" I murmured, backing up slowly. I felt nothing there. I had been in missions like this before, it's just somehow this felt different, more dangerous. I could feel myself start to shake.
In all my missions I've never trembled as much as I was at this moment. In a panic I kept my sharingan activated in case someone tried to charge me or throw something. Out of nowhere, I felt a hand grabbed mine. I tried to pull away but whoever it was kept a good grip on me. When I turned to look, turns out Kakashi was standing next to me the whole time.
Summary: In which Tobirama ponders about what his life has amounted to, if what he has done and all of his accomplishments were enough.
Or
What happens if he makes it from his last fight, and comes home to the news of his unborn child. Life, as it is, ensues.
A/N: Pls cry, I did my best in this one-shot HAHAHAHHAHA.....
available on AO3.
//
Imagine this.
Tobirama closes his eyes and he searches for your chakra signature. It flares strongly, even more than usual, and despite being close to his death, he takes comfort that you are alive and well. His words of telling you not to mourn him can only do so much, he knows this well. He did not realize that he would be taken from your side this early on in life.
He does not feel pain anymore.
As someone who has lived through many wars and deaths, he wonders if all the work he has done, all the fights he has won, he wonders what they equate to. Is he just a blip in time? Will he be remembered for his transgressions, or the accomplishments that he made and paid for by blood and many sleepless nights? Will he be known for his militaristic rule and policies, or be overshadowed by his brother’s abilities and be named something less?
 At the time of his dying, he finds that he could care less. He only worries for you and what his death will mean to you. The village will be okay. He has trained his successor well, has raised him to be a fine shinobi, and under his care, the village will thrive. He hopes. He knows that Hiruzen is too young, but he is the only capable shinobi who can protect his village and lay down his life for it, no questions asked.
His eyes go to the sky, and for the life of him, he has never seen the sky like this. It is not supposed to be beautiful, not when he’s dying, but now that everything is finally coming into a stop, he finds that it is okay for him to finally admire the beauty of nature. That it is okay to feel at peace, and accept all the love that you have given him, because he knows all too well how much you have given him.
 He never had time–he felt as if time was always working against him, and no matter how fast he is, time is a god that he can never contend with. He is and will always be a human being that will die in the end.
 He is Senju Tobirama, Second Hokage. Master delegator, inventor, advisor, a brilliant tactician, teacher.
 But to you, he is Senju Tobirama. Your husband, your companion for life.
His vision clouds with blurred faces, but for a moment, he is allowed a moment of clarity.
 Hiruzen, the new appointed Hokage, comes into view. He did not expect for any of them to come back for him.
Tobirama feels a hand grasp his, and he turns to his student. “Tell her...that I am both thankful...and sorry.”
His vision blanks, but he hears his student heeding his request. As for his last breath, he spends it feeling your chakra, despite being miles away.
  Imagine this . He tells you, even if you will never know.
//
It could be worse, you think.
 When they brought Tobirama in, he was worse for wear. The good thing was, he is still conscious. He is not belligerent, and he lets his students carry him to the hospital to start the healing process.
 Nervously, you follow them and you try to hold in the queasiness that is rocking your stomach. Subconsciously, you bring a hand to your stomach, as if it will help calm it.
 You wait around, eating whatever Tobirama’s students bring you to eat and fighting hard to not throw it back up.
 You must be sick, you reckon, but you know that this is not true. You have noticed how you tire easily these days, and how moody you are even though some situations do not require intense emotions. You also notice how you get sick around certain smells, and you are sensitive to the slightest change in temperature. You feel bloated, even though you cannot keep down any foods that you used to eat.
 You are afraid to say it, because you do not want to hope for more, especially with what happened in the past with your miscarriage.
But days of waiting for Tobirama to heal, of going through many tiring routines, the tiny life inside you continues to grow strong, and you are sure that it will be okay.
//
After almost a month of recuperating, Tobirama is chained to his bed–figuratively, of course. He does not seem eager to get back on his feet, which is a first. He always disregards his own health and feels the need to jump at any chance to work, but for now, he stays still under your vigilance. You are finally alone with him, and you take his hand into yours.
 Tobirama looks at you, in the same way that he always does. Even when he’s angry, or scowling at something that displeases him, all of that goes away when he finally finds your face.
 “You do not look well,” Tobirama hoarsely grunts out.
You let out a small chuckle. “Speak for yourself.”
 Tobirama squeezes your hand strongly. “I told you not to worry.”
 You roll your eyes, finding it in you to be a little bit more playful. “No, you said, do not mourn me .” You try your best to impersonate him.
Tobirama scowls and gives you a pointed look, but his touch on your hand remains tender.
“Tobi,” you whisper, unsure how to begin.
 Tobirama stares at you, waiting patiently for you to gather your thoughts.
 “I’m with child,” you tell him, cutting to the chase.
You look to your husband’s face and you see a light of wonder spread across his eyes, and then the faint softening of the rest of his face.
“Oh,” he says, rendered speechless. It is probably one of the least things he expects right now.
You smile faintly and you bring your entwined hands to your lips. “You will be a father.”
 Tobirama lets out a faint rush of air that sounds akin to a laugh. “And you, a mother.”
//
When Tobirama got discharged from the hospital, it is surprising that he does not immediately throw himself to work. He insists that you consult with a doctor to make sure that everything is progressing well with your pregnancy, and by insist, you mean, command . You follow at his behest, and you wonder if the rest of your pregnancy will be full of Tobirama worrying more than enough for the two of you.
 Well, he does have a reason to.
He waits as patiently as he could, making the doctor examining you work nervously.
 However, you know there is no budging him.
“Alright, my lady,” the doctor says. “Your due date will be on August 13.”
  The doctor gives you more provisions, and you have no doubt that Tobirama has already memorized them. He is always better than you with these types of things, as long as they require a routine and order.
 As you walk home, Tobirama keeps close to you, not showing how fatigued he is and instead, trying to show you that he can fight anyone who dares harm you.
“Tobirama, calm down,” you tell him right when you step into the four walls of your home.
 You know that he is checking and rechecking the chakras surrounding you, in case anyone tries to do something.
 “You, sit down,” Tobirama commands. “I will ask the servants to make you something, and you will sleep right after.”
 “Right after?” You retort, because you really cannot help it. “At least let my food digest for an hour or two.”
 Tobirama thinks about this, and then concedes. “Fine, but you will not tire yourself and move around. You will stay in bed.”
You roll your eyes, but there is a smile on your face. “Right, okay.”
 Tobirama meets your gaze, making sure to reaffirm his words, and then he makes way to find the servants.
“Dammit, Tobirama,” you say to yourself, out of affection and amusement.
//
Tobirama will not even let you walk around the streets of Konoha, not unless he is near you, because one, you might fall, or two, somebody tries to attack you–all his reasonable reasons, of course. So, no walking and shopping anymore. You also cease your work to help your husband, and instead, you are cooped at home, poring over books and poems and other dry manuscripts you happen to get your hands on. If it is not available at home, Tobirama brings it to you.
 As your womb grows, your moods swing like a pendulum. One moment, you are giving Tobirama the silent treatment because he didn’t even massage you, the next you feel like you’re about to cry because has not even glanced at you or offered to carry you from the bathroom to the bed.
 You honestly do not understand it, because you have always been the less moody one. You feel ashamed that you are acting up, but Tobirama does not complain and takes every brunt of your unpredictable pregnancy with a steady grace and stride that you have always known he is capable of.
Tobirama is a problem-solver, so he always takes action and he starts to make concessions for you. He also scolds you more than usual, mostly due to his fear that some ridiculous situation is about to happen to you. He also comes home earlier than his earlier usual to care for you, and this side of him, you wish you can get more of.
 He always manages to surprise you. Much to your chagrin, it is probably because he does not reveal all of his cards right away. It’s like a mission, where one has to meet all kinds of tasks in order to get the reward and receive a bigger mission that is a level up from the previous one.
 It is quite funny, that Tobirama never loses this side of him, even towards his domestic life.
//
You feel your baby kicking one night, when you are reading and humming to yourself. The sensation startles you and you shout Tobirama’s name in panic.
 Your husband is at your side in no time, hounding on you with concern. He studies you carefully, his eyes on full alert.
 “What is it?” He puts his hands on your womb and he looks so alarmed, that it is almost endearing to you.
 “I...there was…” You look down and when your baby kicks again, you realize that there is nothing wrong.
 Tobirama notices the kicking as well, and he immediately froze.
You try not to cry as you put your hands on top of your husband’s. “Can you say something? I was just humming and your baby kicked me.
Tobirama looks quite horrified.
 “What?” You urge him. “It’s okay, the baby’s fine. The doctor said that it’s bound to happen, I was just surprised.”
Tobirama lowers himself and he stares at your womb focusedly. “Really?”
 “Yes, we’re okay. So talk to your child now, let them know you’re here.”
Tobirama keeps staring, and you see his gears turning. “I do not know what to say.”
 “Try.”
 Tobirama caresses your womb with his thumbs. “This is your father…”
You laugh, and Tobirama glares at you, but there is no malice.
“Don’t bother your mother too much,” Tobirama continues, but sternly. You detect a hint of shaking in his voice.
 You raise your eyebrows. “Firstborn child and that’s what you say to them?”
 “What am I supposed to say?” Tobirama snaps, agitated.
 “Calm down!” You chuckle. “One might have thought you’re the pregnant one here.”
 Tobirama clenches his jaw, and you know he is embarrassed.
“Firstborn?” He repeats, dumbfounded.
 You shrug. “Well, you know, trial number one right here on the way. If it goes well, maybe you’d want another one so it doesn’t get lonely.”
Tobirama frowns. “My children are not experiments.” And he glances down at your womb again. “And don’t call them ‘it.’”
 You chuckle, and you squeeze his hands. “Fine, fine. You’re so meticulous.”
Tobirama smiles softly, and then he stands up. He gives you a forehead kiss, and then sternly ushers you to go to sleep.
 You do not even complain about it.
