What's a character you were super into when you were like 12?

I had to sit and think about this genuinely because a lot of the people I was obsessed with when I was younger were real people? Like Ashley Tisdale, Demi Lovato, Joe Jonas, James Maslow from Big Time Rush, etc. In terms of characters I've got a few from a few different age ranges:

Kid (8-12): Definitely Atreyu from The Neverending Story

This was my favorite movie as a kid and I had a huge crush on Atreyu. I thought he was so cool and adventurous but he had real internal issues of self-worth and when he was on the brink of giving up he had to learn to accept help and he loved his horse and his people so much. I'm still obsessed with The Neverending Story to this day and I have a copy of the book that has a cover with the Auryn on it, like the book Bastian steals from the bookshop. It's one of my prized possessions.

Teen: Warren Peace from Sky High

Once again, I had a big fat crush. I am one of those problematic people who find villains interesting, especially villains that are realistic (like bullies) (🍅🍅🍅 I KNOW!!) But LISTEN!! Bullies in fiction are interesting to me because (most of the time hopefully if it's well written) there's a good deconstruction of why they act the way they act and it usually boils down to hurt people hurt people and I find it fascinating IN FICTION. I'm highkey still obsessed with Warren Peace given that I wrote a whole YA MM Contemporary Romance original fiction book inspired heavily by him.

And the last person I could think of being obsessed with as a teen is Kat Stratford from 10 Things I Hate About You BUT!!! specifically the version played by Lindsay Shaw (before she was problematic) in the ABC Family/Freeform TV series adaptation.

I was obsessed with her for so many reasons. I thought she was gorgeous, I loved her style! I loved her HAIR! She's probably the first and only fictional character that I was directly inspired to copy what she wearing. It was like a cross between stylistic punk/goth/skater girl aesthetic. I wasn't hugely attached to the original 10 Things I Hate About You, but I liked this version of Kat better (but I'm biased so take that with a grain of salt). I also had a big fat crush on her love interest in this series as well (so them together I was like 🥵). We only had this show for one season (and the ending was a cliffhanger that I'm STILL salty about!!!) but I will forever love this show.

One of the changes i'm really excited about in the tv show is Grover and Annabeth's friendship. We definitely see it in the books, but the main focus is Grover and Percy. The line of: "He's my protector." "He was mine first." puts even more emphasis on what Grover and Annabeth have been through together (and they were def getting some flashbacks when Percy sacrificed himself for the two of them). I really hope to see more of Annabeth's and Grover's dynamic outside of the main trio :)

then he recruits ghost to the 141 and ghost sees how much he’s changed, how much harder he is; slow to smile, never relaxing and he realises how much he fucked up by never reaching out. he’d thought he’d be better off without him, without the shell of the man he used to love but he’d done nothing but hurt him

after the close call with shepherd, soap wants to get right back into it, wants to hunt makarov down for almost getting his sergeant and lieutenant killed and ghost is yelling at him to just take it easy and heal first when soap snaps back, “i can’t lose anyone else! not again!” and ghost just rips his balaclava off, showing his face for the first time in years…

and soap says nothing. he just looks at him, completely unreadable. ghost clenches the balaclava in his hand, waiting for anything; even injured, soap can still pack a mean punch and he’s waiting for it, almost hoping for it… but he still does nothing. just stares

“well? c’mon!” he growls, stalking in closer. “let me have it! tell me how pissed you are! that i left you alone! that i ruined you the moment i touched you! that you regret ever fucking looking at me! scream, shout, say something!” until he’s leaning over soap’s chair, chest heaving

If you could think about one, there is a real chance there are at least like 2 fics of any random ship you can think about. And i think this is beautiful.

So I know the fandom loves seeing young Kim as a punk, with leather jackets and combat boots and a million pins and patches and in general fairly anti-establishment and also somewhat openly gay at least within the community

And I'm not gonna lie I love it too

But there's also this idea that I can't get out of my mind, and it's Kim in what is called "epa-kultur" over here. 15 year old kids too young to have a driver's license or a car, but one of the friends in the group has six older siblings and managed to get one of those cars that are only supposed to go up to 40 kmph that you can drive with a moped license, but that can definitely go up to like 150 if you flip the right switches. It's 30 years old and absolutely shit but you all love it anyway. You drive around, a shitty speaker in the back playing terrible electronic music too loud to really hold a proper conversation while inside, nine kids packed like sardines sitting on each other's laps (one of the backseats is taken up by a speaker), ending up in an unused parking lot to get drunk on 3% beer. The car's broken half of the time but that just means you play bad music and get drunk on cheap beer while trying to fix it with random parts you got from a friend of a friend of a friend, always fucking up in some way no matter how hard you try so the car will inevitably break down again within a week. Until you eventually really do get fairly good at fixing it, and then you just end up checking all the bolts and connections all the time instead. And like it's definitely a small town/rural thing over here. It definitely would not be a thing in Revachol, and especially not in the part of Revachol Kim grew up in, where you're happy to have a roof over your head and food to eat and you're probably reasonably rich compared to your neighbours if your family has a car. And while it's very different nowadays especially with younger kids you could still get a lot of the ideas common in more conservative areas, about gender roles and queer people and whatnot.

And I just love the idea of 15-year-old Kim with a group of other kids like this, feeling a tiny little bit like he finally belongs somewhere for the first time, trying to figure out a way to get some money for a car part for his friend's car, drinking even though he doesn't really want to because that's what you're supposed to, casually making sexist jokes that make him strangely uncomfortable even though he doesn't really understand why, fully convinced the only reason he tries to find any excuse to spend time with this one guy that is so impressive and knows so much about cars is because it's the first time he's found a good friend, because why else would you feel this way about a guy

and then after a couple of years maybe he does bring up possibly feeling a certain way about men when he's a bit drunk and he immediately gets made fun of, and when he doesn't react fast enough and say that obviously he was kidding, eww that would be so gross, he gets called a hundred different slurs without hesitation, not just homophobic ones but racial ones too, and he realizes once again that there really isn't a single place in this world where someone like him could truly belong, no matter how it might feel in the moment.

(and then maybe he does get a leather jacket and some patches a few years after that lol)
