This office may have been known to the newspaper staff as "the chamber of horrors," but that didn't stop the illustrator Winsor McCay from sporting a boater hat, ca. 1920. The paper was the NY Journal American, owned by William Randolph Hearst. McCay is best known for the paper's Sunday color newspaper cartoon, Little Nemo in Slumberland, and the animated film short Gertie the Trained Dinosaur. Sports page cartoonist Joe McGurk is in the center; the other man unidentified.

Recollection of Pierre Gilliard of the Ipatiev House, when he entered the basement just days after the murders
"I then went to the lower storey, the greater part of which was a basement. I entered with intense emotion the room in which, perhaps, they had died. Its aspect was most sinister. Daylight came in through a window with iron bars across it. The walls and the floor bore marks of bullets and bayonet thrusts. It was quite obvious that a dreadful crime had been committed there, and that several people had been killed.
In my despair believed that the Emperor had perished, and, that being the case, I could not believe the Empress had survived him. I had seen her at Tobolsk, when Yakovlev had come to fetch the Emperor, fling herself in the most dangerous place, I had seen her after several hours of agony, when her feelings as a wife and a mother had had a desperate struggle, end by leaving her sick child, though it tore her heart in two, in order to follow her husband, whose life she thought was threatened.
Yes, it was quite possible that they had both been killed. And the children? Had they also been massacred? I could not believe it. The idea was too horrible. And yet everything seemed to prove that the victims had been numerous."

Eight years ago, I shared that while digging through my grandmother’s dirty old shed that was messy, musty, and largely left open to the elements, I found an original front page of the late edition of The Sacramento Bee from November 22, 1963 featuring the news that President Kennedy had been assassinated. I think that would be an awesome discovery for anybody, but it was especially exciting for me as a lifelong Presidential history fanatic. After finding that newspaper, I did a little more digging around in the shed at the time, but didn’t find anything else.
However, I didn’t get to all of the boxes and containers in the shed at that time. There were some even dirtier containers buried deep underneath boxes and furniture and an unsteady amount of crap that was liable to kill me if I disturbed it. And if I wasn’t killed in an avalanche of gross boxes or suffocated by clouds of dust, I was almost certain to be killed by some sort of dangerous spider or dinosaur that was somehow surviving underneath that mess. My grandmother also insisted that the JFK newspaper was a lucky find and that there wouldn’t have been anything else like it anywhere else in her shed.
After eight years and some cleaning and organizing, I was in that old shed today and pulled out a filthy plastic container from underneath some boxes and a set of dining room furniture that seemed like it belonged in the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland. I was looking for some old picture frames for my mom that she thought might be in the dirty plastic container, but she was wrong. There were not any picture frames in the dirty plastic container.
But I did find these:

487. The Dunkin Donuts Post
Tumblr media
There's just something that comforts me about 80s and 90s Dunkin' Donuts. Dunkin is kind of a joke around where I live, unfortunately. It's always hit or miss - mostly miss.
Tumblr media
(source)
Tumblr media
Maybe 'cuz Fred the Baker from the commercials isn't up at 4am making the donuts fresh anymore, who knows. He retired in 1997.
Tumblr media
Hey look, it's a real Fred the Baker from 1993. Steve O'Brien would wake up at 2am!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lots to unpack here:
-that Dunkin wallpaper!
Tumblr media
-Dunkin used to be a place where you would sit at a counter and chill. Here's a video of one in Massachusetts in the early 80s.
-I wonder what Mel Gee's wife really thought about him going right back to Dunkin after dinner instead of staying with her?
-I miss chicken salad and tuna salad sandwiches at Dunkin! I only had one once or twice at the Dunkin near my house that was barely a Dunkin, but they were heavenly.
-I wanted to know if just maybe this Dunkin was still open. There are two Dunkins on Orange Avenue in Orlando. There was one that looked way too new, and then there was this one:

(2007)
Is this the one?!
Tumblr media
Mel and his friends couldn't smoke in most Dunkin's after 1995 though.
Tumblr media
Thankfully Mel didn't hang out at one of the stores that recorded conversations! Dunkin said heck no and shut it down.
Tumblr media
Mel and his friends also didn't eat bagels back then either. Dunkin didn't get bagels in all its locations until around 1996! Back then they had 12 varieties! They usually only have two or three vanities at the ones near me.
Tumblr media
I bet Mel got his girl one of these for Christmas. Notice that separate round disc. You affixed that to your dash with the included sticky stuff, and slid your cup into the disc. Life before cupholders.
Tumblr media
Dunkin became hip to hang out at in the Philippines .
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Unfortunately this Exxon franchise in Memphis flew too close to the sun too early in 1990, and their venture serving Dunkin at their stations fell flat within five years. I like Janice's uniform.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On that note, I remember the DD's in the convenience stores at the Air Force base (PX?) always had the most saddest driest munchkins.
Tumblr media
Wait, Dunkin owned some Chili's?! According to a Boston Magazine story the investment "sent stocks into a spiral". 1
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Does anybody remember the Kaluha coolatta?
Tumblr media
I read this wrong at first, and thought that someone shaped a munchkin to look like a shaft, not someone arranged munchkins to look like a Weiner and balls. I think Sandra was just seeing stuff.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
David's Dunkin Customer Complaint site even has a wikipedia page. Here is the 1998 archive.

Now and then I stumble across oddities hidden within the pages of old books. Last night I discovered a newspaper clipping inside a book called The Stinky Cheese Man and other Fairly Stupid Tales. It appears to be from the Chicago Tribune, June 6, 1990, and it describes how a magazine's search for "America's cheapest zillionaire" revealed that Donald Trump was willing to cash a check for thirteen cents. Why was it inside this book? I can only assume that the previous owner of the book felt that it was about an odorous man who was fairly stupid, and thus a worthwile addition to the book.

oh and if you were wondering whether or not leckie deserved to be bullied, the answer is yes. here is a letter he wrote his dad, which served as the basis of the 'baby-faced' insult and which was also published in the bergen record on january 27, 1944:
