This office may have been known to the newspaper staff as "the chamber of horrors," but that didn't stop the illustrator Winsor McCay from sporting a boater hat, ca. 1920. The paper was the NY Journal American, owned by William Randolph Hearst. McCay is best known for the paper's Sunday color newspaper cartoon, Little Nemo in Slumberland, and the animated film short Gertie the Trained Dinosaur. Sports page cartoonist Joe McGurk is in the center; the other man unidentified.

On This Day in New York City History January 21, 1957: After a 16-year bomb planting spree, George Metesky (November 2, 1903 - May 23, 1994) aka The Mad Bomber is arrested at his home in Waterbury, Connecticut.
Metesky's M.O. was placing pipe bombs in New York City public spaces such as libraries, theaters, phone booths, public restrooms, bus and train terminals. Luckily, while two thirds of his bombs exploded none of the explosions led to casualties. When asked why he was engaging in terrorism for such a long time, he placed blame on his employer Con Edison.
In the letters sent by Metesky to the New York Journal-American newspaper, he claimed that he was leaving bombs because he was never properly compensated for an injury we sustained while working for Con Ed. It would take the work of Con Ed clerk Alice Kelly to discover who the Mad Bomber was.
Kelly was going over worker's compensation files when she discovered a file that had the key words "injustice" and "permanent disability" written on them. Both words had been prominent in the notes that Metesky had sent to the newspaper.
While Metesky was looking for his day in court to show the world how negligent Con Edison was, he would not get his way. Metesky would be found to not be competent enough to stand trial due to reasons of insanity. He was sent to the Matteawan State Hospital for the Criminally Insane. He would be later transfered to Creedmoor Psychiatric Center where he stayed until being released in 1973.

New publishing announcement!
Hi guys!
I know it’s been a long time since there’s been news about The Wicked Powers. I’ve actually been sitting on information for a long time because I was not allowed to talk about it. It was making me pull out all my hair, so I am super glad to be able to share the following announcement with you: The Wicked Powers is scheduled for publication, and will be published by Walker Books in the UK and Random House in the US.
There’s a bunch more about this announcement, including the announcement of a brand-new YA romantasy series I’ll be doing called In Fire Foretold. That will be published by Pan Macmillan in the UK (same people who published Sword Catcher) and by Random House in the US.
I know there will be a lot of questions about what my schedule is, why things are coming out when they are, whether I have anything coming out next year (Yes, The Ragpicker King, the sequel to Sword Catcher, and also for those who participated in the Kickstarter, those four books) and the overall future of everything Shadowhunter-related. So I will be doing followup announcements to address all that stuff, but first, here are both press release from my publishers in the US and then in the UK with all the info!

GLOBALLY BESTSELLING FANTASY PHENOMENON CASSANDRA CLARE TO PUBLISH  FINAL TRILOGY IN THE ‘SHADOWHUNTER CHRONICLES’  AND NEW DUOLOGY WITH ALFRED A. KNOPF BOOKS FOR YOUNG READERS  First book in THE WICKED POWERS to release in Spring 2026
(New York, NY, April 5, 2024)—Alfred A. Knopf Books for Young Readers, an imprint of Random House Children’s Books, will publish five new books from #1 New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Cassandra Clare, whose novels have sold more than 40 million copies worldwide, been translated into 43 languages, and published in more than 60 countries. The new publications will begin in Spring 2026 with the first book in THE WICKED POWERS trilogy, the sixth and final series in Clare’s 23-book, young adult fantasy franchise The Shadowhunter Chronicles. Also slated for publication with Knopf is a brand-new YA romantasy duology, IN FIRE FORETOLD. The news was announced today by Melanie Nolan, VP and Publisher, Alfred A. Knopf Books for Young Readers, who acquired North American rights from Suzie Townsend and Joanna Volpe of New Leaf Literary & Media in a highly competitive auction. Michelle Frey, Senior Executive Editor, Alfred A. Knopf Books for Young Readers, will edit both series.
Cassandra Clare mesmerized readers across the globe with the publication of City of Bones (2007), the first book in the Mortal Instruments series, and was quickly dubbed the “New Queen of Fantasy” by the Wall Street Journal. The Mortal Instruments became the basis for the far-reaching Shadowhunter Chronicles, an intricately drawn world that has seen global success and has been adapted into both a feature film and television show. The books follow the Shadowhunters, a secretive race of humans born with angel blood, whose mission is to eliminate the demons that plague the Earth. Knopf’s first publishing collaboration with Clare, THE WICKED POWERS (Spring 2026), will follow Kit Herondale, Ty Blackthorn, and Drusilla Blackthorn from The Dark Artifices series as they are drawn into the final massive conflict between the demons and the angels.
IN FIRE FORETOLD is a pulse-pounding YA romantasy duology set in a new world with entirely new characters. The story centers a young woman who must learn to control her dangerous magical abilities in order to save her kingdom, all while finding herself torn between two brothers—the kingdom's princes, born to a cursed royal bloodline. The publication date for IN FIRE FORETOLD, as well as news of additional books to come from Cassandra Clare and Knopf, will be announced.
Says Cassandra Clare: "I am delighted to have Knopf and Penguin Random House as my publishers for this last trilogy in the Shadowhunters world. They truly understand what it means—both for the story and for my readers—to wrap up such an epic tale that has been told over so many years. I'm also excited to be launching my next YA series — a kickass portal fantasy that contains a ton of things I love, from a bold and reckless heroine to a magical wasteland filled with terrifying monsters that must be fought, to a love triangle with two very unusual cursed princes. I can't wait for us to bring these stories to the world."
Says Michelle Frey: “Cassandra Clare is a beloved author whose work has a massive following for good reason: she sucks you into a fully imagined world and never lets go until the last, satisfying page. I have long admired Cassie and am thrilled to be working with her on both the delectable final trilogy in the Shadowhunter Chronicles and the heart-stopping new love triangle she has dreamed up with IN FIRE FORETOLD.”
Random House Children’s Books (rhcbooks.com) is the world’s largest English-language children’s trade book publisher. Creating books for toddlers through young adult readers, in all formats from board books to activity books to picture books, novels, and nonfiction, the imprints of Random House Children’s Books bring together award-winning authors and illustrators, world-famous franchise characters, and multimillion-copy series. Random House Children’s Books is a division of Penguin Random House LLC.
UK/AUS/NZ:
Walker Books will publish three new books, the final trilogy in Shadowhunter Chronicles, the first coming in Spring 2026.
Separately, First Ink will publish a brand new YA duology, introducing readers to a fantastical new world of Clare’s creation, filled with enticing new characters and heart-racing action. With sales figures for Cassandra’s novels exceeding 40 million copies worldwide, translated into 43 languages and published in more than 60 countries, these are exciting and major acquisitions for both publishing houses.
Walker will launch THE WICKED POWERS in Spring 2026 with the first book in the trilogy, The Last King of Faerie. THE WICKED POWERS is the final instalment of Clare’s 23-book, young adult fantasy series, Shadowhunter Chronicles.
THE WICKED POWERS (Spring 2026), will follow Kit Herondale, Ty Blackthorn, and Drusilla Blackthorn from The Dark Artifices series as they are drawn into the final massive conflict between the demons and the angels. The novel marks the beginning of the final trilogy in Clare’s globally beloved series.
Cassandra Clare Says about THE WICKED POWERS: "I’m thrilled to be taking this momentous step in the Shadowhunter chronicles with Walker! They published City of Bones in 2007 and now we will be bringing this huge epic to a close together. With their creativity and dedication, I know they’ll do it justice."
Denise Johnstone Burt says: “We at Walker are immensely proud to have been Cassie’s publishers from the very beginning, when City of Bones launched the Shadowhunters into the world. Since then Cassie has become one of the most beloved writers in YA fantasy all over the world, and with very good reason. Her world-building and character portrayal are absolutely second to none and her books never fail to mesmerise her fans. I am delighted that we will be returning to the world of Shadowhunters once again in THE WICKED POWERS, and know Cassie will bring the Chronicles to a conclusion with her trademark brilliance and consummate style.”
First Ink will publish IN FIRE FORETOLD, a pulse-pounding YA romantasy duology set to delight all fans of Cassie Clare. UK and Commonwealth rights were acquired by Samantha Smith, Publisher of First Ink and Macmillan Children’s Books’ Fiction, Non Fiction and Picture Book List, from Danny Baror and Heather Baror-Shapiro at Baror International.  The duology will be a super lead title for First Ink and will launch with a significant multi-channel communications campaign including national media, influencer and fan events [HBS1] and multimedia advertising.
IN FIRE FORETOLD sees the launch of a brand new world and set of entirely new characters for Clare. The story centres on a young woman who must learn to control her dangerous magical abilities in order to save her kingdom, all while finding herself torn between two brothers - the kingdom's princes - born to a cursed royal bloodline.
Cassandra Clare says about IN FIRE FORETOLD: “I’m so excited to be publishing IN FIRE FORETOLD with First Ink. This story contains so many things I love- it’s a portal fantasy that swings between worlds, where the gritty LA streets exist alongside a dangerous magical world filled with deadly monsters - and a uniquely tough heroine who’s ready to do battle on all sides. Not to mention some gorgeous princes with shady pasts. I know how much Pan Macmillan loves fantasy and how well they publish it so I’m thrilled for this partnership."
Samantha Smith, Publisher at First Ink, says: “Cassandra Clare is a phenomenon author who has delighted and surprised her millions of readers across the world for decades now. As a huge fan of both her YA Mortal Instruments series and latest adult fantasy Sword Catcher, I cannot wait for her to turn her formidable pen to a new, heart-stopping series in In the Fire Foretold and could not be more excited to welcome her onto the First Ink list”
Belinda Ioni Rasmussen, Managing Director at Macmillan Children’s Books, says: “ Welcoming Cassandra Clare to First Ink with a brand new fantasy world is very exciting - both for us and her fans.  Her storytelling is second to none and her new duology on our list is the perfect partner series to her brilliant publishing that sits on our Tor list at Pan Macmillan.”

have you written anything about tattoos? is that relevant? don't know how your niche lines up with generic "sailor" tradition, but wikipedia simply says on knuckle tats that deckhands may get "HOLD / FAST" as a charm to support their grip on rigging, and i thought that was kind of cute.
I haven't written anything myself, mostly cos if you throw a stick out in the internet you'll find any number of articles about the symbolism of sailor tattoos, like hold fast and pigs and roosters and swallows and all that!
In my narrow window (the middle decades of the 19th century), I don't see tattoos mentioned all too often, compared to late 19th and throughout the 20th century where they became more common. For instance, this register of seaman's protection certificates (which are admittedly limited in the scope of things, since they're only from a few specific ports) from 1796-1871 rarely list tattoos as distinguishing marks, beyond the odd mention of being marked with an inked anchor, eagle, or letters here or there. Here's a neat jstor article (if you have any more of your 100 free monthly articles to read with a google account) that goes into late 18th-early 19th c tattoos that has some tables and visuals. The research was also done using seaman's protection certificates, with the following stat:
"The SPC-A records start in 1796 and include tattooed men born as early as 1746. There were 979 tattooed men out of a total of 9,772 men whose records survive from 1796 through 1818.26 These men were marked with a total of about 2,354 separate designs."
So, not a large number, but also 10% isn't insignificant. The protection certificates while a reliable source, also only describe the man in one specific moment. I'm sure a few of those men who just have their moles and scars and crooked fingers listed eventually picked up a tattoo or two in their time. Most journal keepers perhaps didn't think it important to mention who had tattoos or what of, though the typical motifs of anchors, nautical stars, girls, religious & patriotic imagery, etc. were certainly a part of the visual language at this point. Whaler William Abbe who sailed in the 1850s, devoted considerable attention to describing the physical appearance of some of his shipmates. In one instance, he wrote about the tattoos of one 'Johnny Come Lately' or 'Jack Marlinspike' (Real name, John Hewes of Buffalo NY)
'from beneath this cap his face looms out - while beneath supporting his comical head is a bare neck and breast — hairy + brown —the upper timbers to a stout hull of a boat that boast a pair of arms all covered with India ink tattooings — the figure of American Liberty — Christ on the cross — an American Tar holding a star spangled banner in one hand + a coil of rope in the other — a fancy girl — + anchors, rings, crosses, knots, stars all over his wrists + hands — the memorials of different ports he has visited — for Jack has been in all kinds of vessels from a man of war to a blubber hunter — + has consequently been to many ports.'
From the logbook of another whaler who sailed in the early 1840s, James Moore Ritchie, he had a page of his drawings with prices included. This potentially may have been a tattoo flash sheet for his shipmates:
Tumblr media
American whalers also noted the tattoos of indigenous people who had signed on to whaling vessels, particularly in the South Pacific. William B. Whitecar, whaling in the 1850s wrote: "Several New Zealanders in the respective crews of these vessels attracted my attention from the tattooing on their bodies" making mention of "figures on their face and breast".
I'm too sleepy to have a conclusion lol. Tattoos! They existed! Though perhaps not as ubiquitously as the pop culture sailor designs would imply, at least prior to the late 19th c.

Not long ago people attacked gay and lesbian people for being sexual predators. These days the same arguments are used against trans people.
Tumblr media
Right wing extremists and left wing “trans-exclusionary radical feminists” (TERFs)  are arguing that trans women are a threat to cis women and children. The tactic is to sexualize transgender people, reducing their gender identity to some kind of perversion.
This is not in any way a new tactic, historically. It has been used against feminists, people of color and gay men and lesbian women.
So, you might ask why lesbian are using the same tactics against trans people, as straight, cis, people used against their kind. They have clearly learned nothing from history.
Over at twitter The Implausible Girl has collected a wide variety of newspaper clippings documenting the arguments used against gay men and lesbian women.  I will present some of them here.
The Cult Argument
One typical argument used about trans people is that they are part of a cult that uses propaganda to harm cis people. The same argument was used against gay people.
Tumblr media
The Baltimore Sun (Baltimore, MD) 1997-07-20
Tumblr media
The Baltimore Sun (Baltimore, MD) 1997-07-20
Tumblr media
The Signal (Santa Clarita, California). 1999-01-15
The Criminal Myth
In the same way trans women are presented as criminals these days, gay men and lesbian women were considered lawless in the 20th century.
Tumblr media
Democrat and Chronicle (Rochester, NY)   1964-03-15
Tumblr media
The Daily Chronicle, 1977-04-12
The Deception Myth
The fact that gay men and lesbian women were forced into the closet by transphobes, was used against them by the same transphobes. They were considered deceptive and dishonest. The same applies to trans people today.
Tumblr media
Leader-Telegram (Eau Claire, Wisconsin) 1993-12-03
Tumblr media
Hartford Courant, 1997-06-14
The Oppressor is the Victim Myth
When gay men and lesbian people fought for respect and acceptance, their straight oppressors immediately presented themselves as victims. These days lesbian TERFs spread the lie that the trans cause is weakening the lesbian cause.
The argument that “gender ideology” threatens religious liberty is the exact same argument as the one used against gay and lesbian people in the 20th century.
Tumblr media
The Indianapolis News 1974-04-20
Tumblr media
The Tennessean 1989-09-20
The Trender/Fad Myth
These days we are told that trans kinds are victims of a fad. They are “trans trenders”. The exact same argument was used against gay and lesbian people.
Tumblr media
The Coos Bay Times, 1956-10-04
Tumblr media
Calgary Herald, 1970-06-13
The Sexual Predator Myth
Female rebels used to be called "sluts” and “nymphomaniacs” by the servants of the Patriarchy. Black people had to use separate bathrooms in South Africa and the American South, to “protect” white women and children for irrational, hypersexual, black men and women. Finally, lesbian and gay people were considered part of an evil conspiracy aimed at turning “decent kids and women” into sexual deviants.
Tumblr media
The Courier-Journal (Lousiville, KY) 1975-10-25
Tumblr media
Carrizozo Lincoln County News, page 4 1985-08-01
The Binary is Common Sense Myth
People who know little about science or the diversity of religious beliefs seem to think that the sexual binary (we are all born straight) and the gender binary (biological sex equals gender identity) are self evident. Moreover, they think this dogma is supported by science and religion.
Lesbian TERFs, who are themselves victims of this nonsense, are now using this argument against trans people.
Tumblr media
The Pantagraph (Bloomington, IL) 1986-04-24
Tumblr media
The Signal (Santa Clara, CA) 1996-08-13
Tumblr media
Baxter Bulletin (Mountain Home, AK) 1999-03-09
The Free Speech Argument
In democracies oppressors have always hidden their bigotry behind the free speech argument. Apparently they think that free speech legitimizes hate speech and violence. For some reason the argument for free speech is not applied to their victims, gay or trans people.
Tumblr media
Enterprise-Journal (McComb, MI) 1998-10-11
Keeping Lesbians/Trans Women out of the Feminist Movement
TERFs want to keep trans women out of the feminist movement. It wasn’t that long ago, straight feminists wanted to exclude lesbian women from the feminist movement.
Tumblr media
The Bee (Danville, VA) 1977-11-21
To conclude: The current transpohbia is driven by the exact same kind of prejudice as homophobia, with the transphobes using the same stereotypes, the same narratives and the same kind of fear mongering.

Bad news for Republicans: violent crime is down across most of the US.
Donald Trump and far right media want people to believe there is a massive crime wave sparked by hordes of bloodthirsty migrants charging in waves across the southern border. In fact, the spike in crime which began with Trump's botched response to the COVID-19 pandemic is over.
To hear the latest version of Donald Trump’s “American carnage” narrative of a country lost without him, you would think law-abiding citizens are cowering in their homes or stockpiling weapons to deal with a massive crime wave that’s due to illegal border crossings caused by various nations emptying their prisons and by leftist “Soros-funded” prosecutors gleefully opening our own penitentiaries. The idea of an ongoing crime wave is incorporated into all sorts of MAGA rhetoric, including claims that prosecutors pursuing cases against Trump in New York, Atlanta, Florida, and Washington, D.C., should instead be frantically trying and jailing predators who are cavorting on the streets. The alleged threat of murderous “animals” who entered the country illegally has been crystalized by Republican agitprop about the tragic death of Georgia nursing student Laken Riley, who was murdered while jogging, allegedly by an undocumented Venezuelan migrant. But graphic, horrifying anecdotal evidence does not an actual crime wave make. And the more we learn about what’s actually happening in our major cities, the clearer it is that the surge in violent crime that did occur during the COVID-19 pandemic continues to subside. The COVID crime surge largely ended in 2022. Then the incidence of murder and other violent crimes dropped significantly in 2023, according to preliminary federal data, as CNN recently reported:
Fact check: Trump falsely claims US crime stats are only going up. Most went down last year, including massive drop in murder
To the degree that migrants are involved in criminal activity can now be attributed to Trump's blockage of border security legislation in the House by his spineless minions on Capitol Hill.
Bipartisan border deal hits legislative wall as Republicans say they will block bill
Republicans are now officially the owners of border chaos – not the solution to it.
Back to the featured article...
[W]hen a long upward trend in crime during the 1960s, ’70s, and ’80s — a true crime wave — finally came to an end, then dramatically reversed. The current numbers are beginning to show that we’re more than likely in a long period of stable (and, by past standards, relatively low) crime rates that were briefly interrupted by the many dislocations the pandemic caused in American life (and police effectiveness). So the myth of a deadly threat to Americans stemming from liberal policies on the border and in the justice system is mostly just that. Perceptions of public safety, of course, aren’t always in line with objective reality, and violent crime is horrifying even if it’s not as prevalent as law-and-order demagogues suggest. An October 2023 Gallup survey that coincided with growing evidence of dropping crime rates showed 77 percent of Americans agreed there was “more crime” in the country than in the previous year.
Spectacular crime stories are always going to grab headlines. If it bleeds, it leads has been one of the mainstays of American journalism for centuries. You'll never see a headline in the NY Post like Murder Rate Plummets!.
One thing that is often overlooked is that the "long upward trend in crime during the 1960s, ’70s, and ’80s" mentioned in the article came to an end in the 1990s during the Clinton administration.
For ideological reasons, Democrats have been too restrained about publicizing their own law and order successes. As with the 1990s, another drop in crime is taking place under a Democratic administration – despite GOP attempts to exploit individual incidents of crime.
Donald Trump himself is a "one man crime wave".

Pics: Inspiring HPL.
1. Irvin S. Cobb - American writer, editor, humorist & columnist hailing from Paducah, Kentucky¹.
He was the highest paid staff reporter on the NY World newspaper².
Irvin would write 60+ books & around 300 short stories.
Some of which were adapted into silent movies. And, 2 of his later tales were actually filmed, by the famed John Ford³, during the 1930s!
2. Cobb's "dark side" (horror works) of the otherwise lighthearted comedian & the story in question.
3 & 4. Comedic frontpieces(?) for books by Cobb. The 2nd even boasts an Abraham Lincoln quote!
5. Cover to Cobb's collection of other authors's short horror tales.
6. Inside art from Fishhead's ending...
1913 Addendum -
Intro: Irvin Cobb's infamous short story "Fishhead" is set in the back- wood bayous of the vast Reelfoot Lake⁴.
Plot: The tale concerns the murder of a local outcast freak by "poor whites."
With its surprise Jaws⁵-like ending, this gruesome work reminds readers of an issue of EC comics⁶!
Criticism: Lovecraft lauded Cobb for, "... Carrying on our (own) spectral tradition is the gifted... humorist, I.S. Cobb, whose works... contain some finely (made) weird (tales)."
Of the plot, Howard stated that, "Fish- head" (is) an early achievement, ... banefully effective in its portrayal of (an) unnatural... hybrid idiot & the strange fish of an isolated lake."
Lovecraft further opined, "It is (my firm) belief... that... few short stories of equal merit have been published anywhere (else)..."
Legacy: Cobb's "Fishhead" is seen as a major influence on Lovecraft's own "Shadow Over Innsmouth."
Robert M. Price⁷ noted that, "What (Howard) found revolting was the idea of interracial marriage (&) of different ethnicities mating, (thus) 'polluting' the (white? human?) gene pool."
Fishhead is supposedly "the son of a Negro father & a halfbreed Indian mother." It's never mentioned what her other half was from...
This is the same premise behind HPL's "The Shadow Over Innsmouth."
Except that Lovecraft calls them Deep Ones & has a whole city that's been 'turned'...
More when we get to this story...
Notes:
1. Paducah, as 1 out of 9 U.S. Creative Cities, is a haven for thinkers, artists & creators!
Architectural Digest recognizes this city's historic district as 1 of the most beautiful main streets in America.
There are 20 downtown blocks listed in the National Register of Historic Places!
Weird Shit: Paducah's nickname is "The Atomic City."
This was because it was once the U.S.'s only uranium plant, making atomic bombs for our Defense Department...
2. The NY World newspaper began (in 1860) as a leading voice for the US Democratic Party.
But, once under Joseph Pulitzer, it became a pioneer in "yellow journalism."
Catching readers's attention with sensational (sex, sport & scandal) news stories.
This raised their circulation past the 1 million mark!!
Best known for being among the 1st to publish daily comic strips.
They actually created "Hogan's Alley", "Everyday Movies", "Little Mary Mix- up" & "Joe Jinks!"
Merged with The NY Telegram in 1931.
Revived - online - in 2011 by Columbia U. But, hasn't had any new content since 2016...
3. John Ford was an American movie director who won Oscars for "The Informer", "The Grapes of Wrath", "How Green Was My Valley" & "The Quiet Man."
The best of his many Westerns are "The Searchers", "Stagecoach" & "My Darling Clementine."
4. Reelfoot Lake is a real lake best known for its shallowness - about 5½ feet on average.
It's located in western Tennessee &, strangely enough, no swimming is allowed there...
The lake is named after an 1800's Chickasaw warrior with a deformed leg...
Reelfoot Bayou, with its cypress trees, flows out of the lake to join the Obion River - which runs straight to the Mississippi.
5. "Jaws" is, of course, director Steven Spielberg's 1st international master- piece.
And it doesn't need any hype, from me, for you to see it again!
97% on Rotten Tomatoes!!
Enough said...
Make it so!
6. E.C. Comics was an American publisher specializing in horror, crime, dark fantasy & sci-fi comicbooks.
William Gaines printed mature tales of war, adventure, satire, etc...
Noted for its stories high quality, shock endings & progressive social awareness.
Among the themes that EC creators touched upon are: racial equality, anti- war sentiments, nuclear disarmament & even early environmentalism!
Sadly, official censorship forced EC to focus on its "Mad" magazine - which became it's greatest success!!
EC has just been revived, by Oni Press, on this past February of 2024!!
Good times guaranteed...
7. R.M. Price is an American biblical scholar, author & an authority on H.P. Lovecraft.
His works include: "Deconstructing Jesus", "The Reason Driven Life", "The New Lovecraftian Circle", "World War Cthulhu", "The Disciples of Cthulhu", "Arkham Detective Agency", "The Da Vinci Fraud", "The Apartheid State in Crisis" & more great stuff!!
Price was the editor of the greatly lamented Crypt of Cthulhu, Midnight Shambler & Eldritch Tales fanzines.
He even edited a whole series of Mythos anthologies for Chaosium.
Today, Price is editor of The Journal of Higher Criticism!
Busy little tentacle, ain't he...

The innovator of digital visual journalism, she live-draws events such as the Oscars, presidential debates, and White House Press Conferences for major news outlets. She was visiting lecturer at Vassar College and a Barnard College Athena Leadership Fellow. Liza lives in New York.
Check out her interview with us below!
Did you originally have a background in art and writing? If not, how did you start?
I started drawing cartoons really young, around 7 years old, and just loved it so much. As a kid, I would trace the cartoons of James Thurber or Charles Schulz, and others. From there, I developed my own style. After college, I sold my first cartoon to The New Yorker and began doing illustration and books as well. Writing longer form came later, now I love that as well. But cartooning is my first love.
What is one habit you find yourself doing a lot as a creator?
I draw all the time! And I love to people-watch.
Over the years as an artist and writer, what were your biggest inspirations behind your creativity?
I really enjoy looking at other people’s work, looking at drawings and cartoons, examining how they use their pen or stylus in the line work or wash or color. I am inspired by walking in the city (NYC)—the energy and the variety of people inspire me.
What are 3 things you can’t live without as a creator?
Pens, paper (or stylus and tablet), coffee!
What is your favorite piece of all time? Why?
You mean of mine? I don’t have one! They are all my babies, and I cannot pick one!
What do you wish you knew when you first started out creating content that you know now?
I wish I had more confidence in my ideas when I was younger, and I wish I knew that failure is part of succeeding. I get rejected a lot, but it all leads to better work, and you learn what your voice really is the more you draw.
Do you do warm ups before creating a piece or do you dive right in?
It depends on what I’m creating. I do enjoy diving right in, and I am fond of work (my own and others) that comes straight from the heart: no sketching beforehand, just mind to pen. It has a looseness that I love and a feeling of authenticity. Other times, if I am doing an illustration job, I often sketch first and either use a light box or draw over the pencil lines and erase. I also use a tablet a lot, and that is trickier in terms of sketches and finished art, but I make it work.
Who on Tumblr inspires you and why?
I was thrilled to learn that @neil-gaiman is on Tumblr!  He's an inspiration to me.
Thank you for stopping by, Liza! Check out more of her work over at @lizadonnelly.

The custody dispute over the 10-year old heiress Gloria Vanderbilt fascinated Depression-era America in 1934. The girl's aunt, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, sued for custody, alleging that her mother neglected her, had lovers of both sexes, and spent Gloria's inheritance income on her own hedonistic lifestyle. Gloria Senior retaliated by claiming that Whitney kept nude sculptures in her house (she was a sculptor herself and later founded the Whitney Museum in New York).
"The Trial of the Century," as the tabloids called it, began on October 1 and lasted six weeks. Gloria's youngest son, Anderson Cooper, later described it as "the O.J. case of its day, except bigger, because nothing like it had ever happened before." On November 13, the women in the picture above demonstrated outside the courthouse to support Gloria's mother's claim to her child. (Gloria's father had died years before.) In the end, the judge awarded custody to Whitney but allowed Gloria Senior weekend visitation rights. The NY Journal American mocked the verdict:
Rockabye baby, up on a writ. Monday to Friday, Mother's unfit As the week ends she rises in virtue, Saturdays, Sundays, Mother won't hurt you.

Compassion That Kills
Debbie Maimon
February 14, 2024
Tumblr media
The Dark Side of Progressive ‘Humanitarianism’
Beware of compassion; it can kill.
One often reads of “a deep political divide” within the Democratic Party on the subject of the Israel-Hamas war. That is a diplomatic nicety covering up a nasty truth; the Democratic Party today is abandoning Israel; it is being effectively hijacked by left wing progressives who are openly hostile to the Jewish state.
But not out of hatred or cruelty, of course. All under the guise of compassion and solidarity with the “poor and oppressed.”
About half of Democrats today sympathize with Palestinians over Israel. Shockingly, this is even after Hamas’ horrific massacre of Israelis and barbaric torture of children, woman and elderly.
Sympathy among progressive Democrats for the Palestinians persists even as Hamas proclaims its intention to “repeat Oct. 7” and annihilate Israel, and even after polls report that the majority of Palestinian civilians approve of this genocidal goal.
After the House overwhelmingly passed a resolution condemning Hamas for its horrific attacks in southern Israel Oct. 7, New Jersey Democrat Josh Gottheimer wrote on social media that the 15 Democrats who didn’t vote for the measure were “despicable and do not speak for the party.”
“Mr. Gottheimer was only half right,” a Wall Street Journal op-ed commented. “Those 15 members from progressive constituencies may in fact represent the Democratic future. The party of Franklin D. Roosevelt has an anti-Semitism problem.”
“This week progressive activist groups released a “Gaza 2024 statement” asserting they won’t vote for Joe Biden “if he does not end U.S. support for Israel’s brutal war in Gaza. The announcement offers background on ‘Israeli ethnic cleansing and genocide in Gaza,’” the WSJ wrote.
“The Democratic Party never expected Jew-hatred to be a feature of its coalition. Now it is,” the article noted.
“This [shift in allegiance] is the culmination of a trend decades in the making,” a NY Post op-ed argued. The article ascribed the Democratic Party’s embrace of progressive goals to relentless efforts by anti-Israel activists to undermine support for Israel.
The younger, progressive wing of the Democratic Party, ignorant of history and indoctrinated by woke ideology that champions all “people of color” as victims of oppressors, has firmly embraced the Palestinian cause, propelling the party’s base towards the left.
Democrats and Republicans Swapped IDs
The NY Post op-ed by Jonathan Tobin, editor of JNS, notes the irony in how the Republican and Democratic parties have “largely swapped identities in the last 60 years when it comes to Israel.”
Decades ago, beginning with the founding of the Jewish state, Democrats were overwhelmingly sympathetic to Israel, viewing the country as a tiny island of democracy fighting for its life against Arab and Muslim regimes that sought its annihilation.
Republican ranks were divided, with many opting to throw their support behind oil-rich Arab countries and even oppose aid to Israel.
That paradigm changed with the election of Ronald Reagan who was in office from 1981-1989, and was staunchly pro-Israel, the article noted. By the 1990s, the GOP had aligned with Reagan’s view that Israel shared common values with Americans and was a crucial regional ally.
Republicans today back Israel by an overwhelming margin, while congressional Democrats who still support Israel are out of touch with their party’s left-wing base.
Some ascribe the Democratic Party’s reversal to the legacy of the Obama administration, which was hostile to Israel in the extreme. Obama expressed that animus by embracing the nuclear deal with Iran that endangered Israel’s existence, and by its policy of appeasing Teheran and strengthening the rogue nation’s clout in the region to Israel’s detriment.
The Biden administration and certainly the State Department remain wedded to that platform, writes noted columnist and Middle East expert Caroline Glick.
Propaganda Machine Betting on Public’s Ignorance
The real explanation for the Democrats’ shift in alliance, experts say, is the rise of a left wing movement that falsely equates the Palestinian war on Israel to the struggle for civil rights in the United States.
Its propaganda machine ludicrously casts the Jewish state as an “apartheid regime,” descendants of “white colonizers,” and an oppressor of Palestinians who are supposedly “indigenous” to Israel—the earliest natives of the land. Laughable, but it works if you can count on the public’s ignorance.
A significant proportion of Congressional Democrats, testing the direction in which political winds blow, have begun alienating themselves from Israel, following the lead of the congressional pro-Palestinian “Squad” who propagate anti-Semitic tropes as part of their hate-Israel tirades.
These propagandists also count on the capacity of people to blindly swallow wholesale lies. Shrieking pro-Palestinian protesters will never have to digest the historical fact that the majority of Israeli Jews have roots in Middle Eastern countries, and are in no way descendants of “white European colonizers.”
They will never stumble across the fact that ancient Jewish monarchies presided for centuries over the land of Israel before a Muslim ever existed.
Progressive activists also hide from the uninformed the fact that Arab Israelis comprise 21 percent of the Israeli population, are represented in the Knesset and in every strata of Israeli society, and enjoy full civil and political rights.
Luckily for the propaganda artists, the average American college student has no idea or interest about these real world facts, or the entire edifice of lies would collapse.
“Until our entire educational system was hijacked by Marxist radicals, Israel was popular with Americans of all backgrounds,” notes the NY Post op-ed. “And it remains so among those, like most GOP voters, who don’t buy into the left’s lies about history and race.”
It is no longer possible to pretend that despite a “political divide” among Democrats, both parties are committed to Israel’s defense, the author contends.
“Thanks to the influence of the ideology to which even President Joe Biden bends his knee,” and which he apparently hopes will help secure him the Arab vote, “the Democrats have reached a tipping point on Israel from which there may be no road back.”
All In the Name of Compassion
A closer look at the progressives’ platform, reveals, in addition to its anti-Israel agenda, a political end game to radically change the United States—again under the guise of compassion and humanitarianism.
Many of the major cities such as NY, LA, San Francisco, Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, Portland, Washington D.C., are witness to the havoc wreaked by progressive soft-on-crime prosecutors, who refuse to prosecute crimes of shoplifting, carjacking, vandalizing property, home break-ins and violent assaults on innocent pedestrians.
The Target chain is closing nine locations across the country — including the liberal-DA strongholds Manhattan, Seattle, San Francisco and Portland, Oregon — because they haven’t figured out a way to combat crime in these soft-on-crimes cities,” a National Review article reported.
“We cannot continue operating these stores because theft and organized retail crime are threatening the safety of our team and guests, and contributing to unsustainable business performance,” the article quoted the company’s statement.
In Washington, D.C., thieves have looted dozens of convenience stores around the city, afterwards selling their stolen goods in “pop-up shops”—sometimes just a short distance from the stores they just robbed, noted AMAC Newsline, a news outlet operated by a conservative think tank.
“The carjacking craze which has gripped major cities throughout the country has also been particularly acute in D.C., more than double the number from 2022,” the article said. Strikingly, “most of the offenders have been juveniles, some as young as 12 or 13 years old.”
Despite the crisis, the D.C. City Council has advanced “reform” legislation reducing penalties for crimes, and making it more difficult for prosecutors to score convictions.
Last year, over the veto of Mayor Muriel Bowser, the council passed a radical overhaul of the city’s criminal justice code that would have slashed prison sentences and ended the prosecution of many crimes. After much feuding and litigation, the bill was ultimately blocked by Congress.
One would hope that real world consequences of unbridled compassion toward lawbreakers would shatter left-wing delusions and dangerous fantasies about “redemption” and “restorative justice” for hardened criminals in place of jail time.
That doesn’t seem to be the case. In one beleaguered city after another, the elimination of cash bail for arrested suspects; policies that phase out jail time for convicted lawbreakers in favor of counseling, parole or community service; and the premature release of violent criminals have collectively led to a dramatic surge in crime. [See Sidebar]
Migrants Ratcheting Up Crime Wave
The current migrant wave has exacerbated the crime surge in big cities, authorities say.
‘Over 125,000 migrants have flooded New York City since last spring, looking for shelter at places like the Roosevelt Hotel reception center,” writes USA Today. “Looters are storming electronic, department and liquor stores for expensive tech, designer goods and alcohol.”
In a shocking incident, two violent migrants who were captured on CCTV stomping and kicking two police officers during a vicious Times Square attack late last month, have yet to be apprehended.  They are still at large, according to the NYPD.
In another incident, a 15-year-old teen from Venezuela was arrested for opening fire in Manhattan, while fleeing from police after suspected shoplifting, an AP article said. The shooting injured a tourist from Brazil.
In yet another migrant assault, a video released last week shows members of a migrant crime gang dragging a woman down a New York City street, grabbing her purse and hurling her into a steel pole before speeding off, the NY Post reported.
It turns out that the crime gang has its members steal cell phones and other IDs, and then hires hackers to break into the victims’ bank accounts and drain their funds.
Several immigrants already arrested for these and other crimes were released on bail and have fled the state, prompting outraged calls for Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg to be removed from office.
The incidents have galvanized authorities to impose an 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew at 20 migrant shelters starting next Monday, a spokesperson for Mayor Eric Adams’ office said.
The curfew impacts about 3,600 migrants, with the largest of the emergency centers housing nearly 1,000 migrants in Long Island City, Queens. A total of 24 migrant shelters are now subject to the restrictions, but this represents only a fraction of the more than 200 such facilities the city operates to house some 66,000 newly arrived immigrants, an AP article said.
As hotels commandeered for the new arrivals are bursting at the seams; schools are overwhelmed; New Yorkers are being displaced; and government services are cut back to cater to the newcomers, Mayor Adams is railing at the federal government for not extending more financial help.
He apparently has forgotten his words in 2022.
In a now memorable speech, Mayor Adams boasted that he was “proud that this is a Right to Shelter state.” Within a year, he was begging for the buses of incoming migrants to stop, saying “It will ruin our city. We are losing the New York City we know.”

Jews Targeted in ‘Tzunami of Hate’In an alarming trend, the lawlessness in New York and other major cities is increasingly targeting Jews.
“Los Angeles Area Plagued by Anti-Semitic Attacks in ‘Tsunami’ of Hate,” declared an ABC News headline on December 1, 2023
“Anti-Semitic Hate Crimes Surge 200 Percent in NYC over Same Period Last Year,” the National Review wrote around the same time. “Despite overall crime declining in New York City in October, hate crimes against the Jewish community jumped by over 200 percent compared to the same period last year,” the article said.
In the weeks following Hamas’s surprise terror attack on Israel, the NYPD’s Hate Crime Task Force registered a 214 percent “spike in anti-Jewish incidents,” compared to the same period last year, according to an NYPD press release.
“Hate has no place in our city. Our Jewish neighbors are being targeted more and more just on the basis of their faith,” the mayor said in response to the surge of anti-Semitic incidents. “That is unacceptable, and it’s why the NYPD is surging resources to synagogues and key locations in communities across the entire city.”
The latest numbers from NYPD’s hate crime bureau underscore FBI director Christopher Wray’s earlier warning on Capitol Hill in late October about growing threats to the Jewish community.
“This is a threat that is reaching sort of historic levels,” the director told the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, shortly after Israel began its invasion of Gaza following the Hamas atrocities of Oct. 7.
“The Jewish community is targeted by terrorists really across the spectrum,” Wray said, adding that the FBI predicts that “the actions of Hamas and its allies” will likely galvanize terrorists “in a way we haven’t seen since ISIS launched its so-called caliphate years ago.”
“In just the past few weeks, multiple foreign terrorist organizations have called for attacks against Americans and the West. Al-Qaeda issued a call to attack the United States. ISIS urged its followers to target Jewish communities in the United States and Europe.”
“Hizballah has publicly expressed its support for Hamas and threatened to attack U.S. interests in the Middle East. And we’ve seen an increase in attacks on U.S. military bases overseas carried out by militia groups backed by Iran,” Wray added.
“This is not a time for panic, but it is a time for vigilance,” the FBI director said. “We shouldn’t stop conducting our daily lives – going to schools, houses of worship, and so forth – but we should be vigilant.”

Criminal Justice Reform or a Push for Anarchy?
Just a few years ago, being tough on crime was a surefire way to bolster a DA’s political aspirations. In a stunning shift, the pendulum has swung wildly in the opposite direction with the emergence of the “progressive prosecutor”—radical reformers who are reinventing the role of the modern district attorney.
While many agree on the need for reform in the American criminal justice system, progressive prosecutors have instituted drastic soft-on-crime changes that, far from dispensing justice, have notably jacked up crime rates in their cities.
Political analysts studying the new trend have pointed to the immense influence wielded by left-wing billionaire George Soros in having soft-on-crime candidates elected to office. Soros created local, independent political action committees which allowed him to bypass the contribution limits on giving to a candidate’s own committee. He then was then able to spend unlimited amounts on behalf of the candidate of his choice.
Soros’s ultimate calculation was that he could make enough of these investments in radical prosecutors that it would cause a major shift in law enforcement in American cities.
His scheme worked and scores of his candidates won elections. By one calculation, 20 percent of the population of the United States was covered by Soros-funded prosecutors, according to City Journal.
But after crime rates soared in cities where Soros-backed prosecutors systematically let lawbreakers of the hook, the soft-on-crime movement has run into bitter grassroots resistance.
Is The Tide Turning?
Since 2022, at least 15 Soros-backed district attorneys have resigned, been recalled, or lost re-election, according to a recent report from the watchdog group “Virginians for Safe Communities.”
In one case, St. Louis circuit attorney Kim Gardner, a self-professed “progressive prosecutor,” released a repeat criminal on bail. The man then hit a young girl with his vehicle at a high speed, resulting in her having her legs amputated. Amid several lawsuits to remove her from office, Gardner finally resigned.
On January 8, Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm became the latest Soros DA to announce he would not seek re-election this year. Chisholm’s policies received national attention in 2021 after it was revealed that a man who intentionally drove his car into a holiday parade in Wisconsin, killing five civilians and injuring at least 48 more, was out on $1,000 cash bail.
“Chisholm’s decision to not seek re-election is particularly significant considering that he was the blueprint for other far-left Soros prosecutors throughout the country, often acting as the movement’s top cheerleader in the media,” the AMAC article said.
In another ouster, voters overwhelmingly chose to recall San Francisco DA Chesa Boudin after the city—one of the most liberal in America—deteriorated into one of the most dangerous zones in the country. That recall sparked a national backlash against soft-on-crime prosecutors.
A month later, Baltimore DA Marilyn Mosby, another far-left prosecutor who received millions from Soros, was defeated in the Democrat primary by a challenger promising to get tougher on crime.
Another major blow to the Soros prosecutor movement came last November, Soros-backed DA Buta Biberaj lost re-election in Loudoun, Virginia, a deep blue county.
“One of the most notorious soft-on-crime prosecutors is Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascon, who was elected in 2020 and is up for reelection this year,” a Fox News article said.
After just one year in office, criticism of Gascon was so intense that a recall campaign was begun. While it failed, more than a half-million signatures have been collected for another recall.
Across the country, it seems millions of Americans, even in liberal cities, are rejecting Soros’s vision of criminal justice “reform.” More than 70 Soros prosecutors are still in office, however, and wield enormous influence, including in the nation’s largest cities like New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago.
“Americans will have their next opportunity to deliver a further rebuke of the radical criminal justice “reform” movement in primary and general elections this year,” writes AMAC. “With cities continuing to succumb to chaos and lawlessness, the worst backlash for Soros prosecutors may be yet to come.”

492. Ed's Party in Lockerbie (June 2, 1989)
Tumblr media
Sometimes kids have ideas, and they should just stay ideas, you know? Sometimes we shouldn't listen to the kids--but Pan American Airlines did.
Shortly after the December 21st, 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, 14 year old Ed Blaus of New Jersey sent a request to Pan Am to send the children of Lockerbie Christmas presents. Seems weird that a 14 year old would ask an airline to do this, but ok. A small child, maybe, but a fourteen year old?
I'm sure he meant something like a gift drive for the kids in town who lost everything that Christmas. Pan Am would give presents to the kids that following Christmas, right?
No, there was going to be a party for all of Lockerbie, and boy when the victims families found out, they were pissed and were assaulting the airline in the press:
Susan Cohen, of Port Jarvis, N.Y., who lost her 20-year-old daughter Theodora in the bombing, said the party was 'tasteless' and charged it was a publicty stunt by Pan Am 'to polish their tarnished image.'
'We're appalled by it,' Theodora Cohen's father Dan Cohen said of the party. 'Right now the rock band should be playing on the soccer field about a block and a half from where 75 bodies were found -- which is obscene. They should end their mourning but this is ridiculous.' 3
[...]
"I'm outraged," said a tearful Florence Bissett, whose 21-year-old son, Kenneth, was killed in the bombing. "How can they do something like that - picnic where bodies were found?"
Susan Cohen of Port Jervis, N.Y., said, "We feel Pan Am should be putting its money into security, not parties."
Joe Horgan of West Point, Pa., a member of the Victims of Pan Am 103 group, was quoted by the Dumfries and Galloway Standard as saying, "It is good for them to have a party, but Pan Am's involvement is despicable. We see this purely as a public relations exercise on their part." 4
"Having this picnic is cruel . . ." said Lynne Fraidowitz of Staten Island, whose 20-year-old son, Daniel Rosenthal, was killed. "It would have been easier on me if they had just ripped my heart out." 5
From what I've read in the scant articles I've found, Pan Am played a "he said, she said" with Ed and his idea. In one article, the airline stated that Ed conceived and raised money for the party, but also wrote the airline for help. The airline stated that they simply flew Ed and his family to Scotland. 1 However, a resident of Lockerbie said that PanAm had the idea of a "Summer Christmas", but townspeople suggested it be a party instead.2 Originally, Disney was going to send some costumed characters to Scotland, but due to outrage from the families, this was redacted. Hebrew National who was to supply food for the party also backed out. 3
Tumblr media
(Business Insider)
While families picketed outside of the PanAm headquarters in New York City, in Scotland the party went on with a concerts, bagpipes and food. 2 A football coach from Syracuse University (which lost 37 students in the bombing) came to give kids football lessons, which was a peculiar choice. Apparently there was no representation from Pan Am at the actual party.3
I found a Facebook post from the Annandale Herald and Moffat News on the 30th anniversary of the party. Most partygoers who were probably kids at the time, mostly remembered eating pizza.

FLP CHAPBOOK OF THE DAY: This body was never made by Tara Propper
On SALE now! Pre-order Price Guarantee: https://www.finishinglinepress.com/product/this-body-was-never-made-by-tara-propper/
This body was never made is a meditation on #grief and its attendant fears surrounding the #body – the body’s frailty, lineage, and legacy. Its #poems paint portraits of #maternal #loss, of a fractured #family, of nature’s eloquence, and of transcendental beauty. While This body was never made does not solve the problem of death, it embraces the “night sounds” that accompany an awareness of the body’s temporality, resolving in the chapbook’s final lines, “There is nothing in this room but shapes of us—amorphous/organs ascending and descending underneath the bed sheets.” In this collection, still-life speaks, seascapes listen, and math provides counsel, reminding us that #life exists before and beyond the body.
Tara Propper has earned her MFA in poetry and PhD in English. Her poetry has appeared in the Southampton Review, Janus Unbound, Literature Today, Ekstasis Magazine, Shuili Magazine, Taj Mahal International Literary Journal, Moveable Type, Vagabond City Press, and P – Queue. Her scholarly work has been published in Composition Forum, Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy, and Resources for American Literary Study. She is currently an Assistant Professor of English in the Department of Literature and Languages at the University of Texas at Tyler.
PRAISE FOR This body was never made by Tara Propper
Cerebral, lyrical, witty, loving and grief-worn, Tara Propper’s life-infusing poems in the collection, This body was never made, reveal an immense talent, a rare gift to the world of poetry. In a sky of many, Propper is singular. The poem “Seascape at 4:42 PM” concludes: “One chiseled cloud makes a metonymy/ of itself. Cotton mammals lurk above/ both pure and untrue. /4:43 PM drops/its un-blessings. It’s the ugliest of day–/and most aware.” Propper’s poems are sinuous tracings that unnerve the tick of the clock; a lot happens between 4:42 PM and 4:43 PM, a lot that is “most aware.”
–Star Black, author of three books of sonnets: Waterworn, Balefire, and Ghostwood; a collection of double-sestinas, Double Time; and a book of collaged free verse, October for Idas
Tara Propper’s This body was never made tests the precision and range of mathematical concepts in particular and, more broadly, any intellectual construct we use to understand the stunning input of our senses. Can a fractal describe a pregnant female body? A miscarriage? Rage? Death? This body was never made also tests the language with which we express these concepts, using rhymes, chimes, puns and syntactical play to push words to their limits: “Outnumbered, she let the numb root.” The raw power of these poems comes from the pressure they are under to bridge the rational and the anything but.
