DP x DC Writing Prompt #8

The day Bruce Wayne knocks on her apartment door Sam knows it's going to be a doozy.

"Mr. Wayne, I really do hope no one saw you," she says, ushering him in. "And for the record, a text ahead of time would be appreciated."

"I parked the car a few streets away," Bruce says, sticking a finger in his heel to peel his polished leather shoes off. Sam raises an eyebrow. "It's a sedan, not a Lamborghini."

"You own a sedan?"

"Taught Dick to drive in it...after he crashed the Lamborghini."

Sam snorts despite herself. The charm Bruce Wayne exhibits would usually rub her the wrong way, too reminiscent of wealthy men that feel comfortable placing a hand on the small of your back at a crowded gala, but Bruce is honest enough about his playacting that she has come to find its insincerity comforting. She's actually sought him out more than once, leading to several annoying headlines that can't seem to decide if she's aiming to date him or one of his eligible sons. None of whom are eligible by the way, as they are a) taken, b) legally dead, c) practically a minor, and d) an actual minor.

Sam's generational wealth is peanuts compared to Wayne Industries, so naturally her parents have been thrilled and rooting for option c.

"I also didn't want Danny to see I'd texted you. Or force you to lie to him."

Sam doesn't quite tense, but it's a near thing. She does slide to the other side of her kitchen island, under the context of finishing prepping her feta fried eggs, laid on a bed of smashed avocado and warm tortilla. She pulls a bottle of crunchy garlic oil out of the fridge and drizzles hot red crisps across the runny yolk. She takes a bite, chewing thoughtfully, not so much as offering him a glass of water.

"You realize, Mr. Wayne, I have no intention of lying to Danny now?"

Bruce sits at the stool on the opposite side of the island. "I understand. And if you want to ask Danny to return home before we continue, I'd understand that as well. I didn't mean to discomfit you--"

"Please do not lie to me now, Mr. Wayne," Sam says, rolling her eyes. "By your own admission you showed up at noon without warning knowing my superhero boyfriend wouldn't be present. If I am discomfited, all the more likely you get your information, right?" Golden yolk runs down her fingers, and she sacrifices it to the napkin rather than lick up her arm in front of her boss, with no small amount of resentment. The yolk is the best part.

"Get to it then," she demands.

Bruce straightens in his stool, chin raising and firming in a jawline she most often sees under a cowl. His eyes attempt to pin her in place, but Sam has stared the Master of Time in the face and demand he reschedule so she is built. different. She takes another bite of egg taco.

"I was not aiming for you to feel threatened, and moreover, I doubt you could be."

Except a smart person should always feel threatened by a threat, no matter their capability of handling one. It keeps them alive.

"Can you tell me how I'm not like all the other girls after lunch? You'll spoil my appetite."

Bruce clears his throat. "I'll get to the point--"

"Thank you."

"--Danny has been exhibiting paranormal behaviors beyond his baseline. We welcome all biologies; human, alien, and paranormal alike, but I have observed actions unlike what he had previously established as his, for lack of a better word, 'normal'

"I want to make sure he is not experiencing any unwelcome outside influence. Or, if this is merely a facet of his evolution, I'd like to know if this is something we or his family should be monitoring."

Sam has been an eco-consultant with Wayne Industries and unofficially, the Batfamily, for half a year now and this is the most she's ever heard the man speak in one sitting.

"Wow," she says. "How long have you been rehearsing that one?"

"A while." Bruce grunts, voice finally taking that final drop into Batman's gravelly rasp. "I see you're not surprised by any of this."

"No, not really," Sam says. She pours him a tall glass of lemon water from the pitcher, freshly sliced that morning, and he takes a polite sip.

"So what can you tell me?"

"Probably a lot. And Danny would probably prefer that I do, knowing him, the big baby," Sam sighs. "Listen Mr. Wayne, I can appreciate that you came here from a place of caution rather than intrusion. And if Danny was undergoing something negative or from an 'unwelcome outside influence' that would be the right call, and I, albeit begrudgingly, encourage you to do so in the future."

"But he's not."

"He's not," Sam confirms. "And in fact, I think he could really use someone to talk to about it. Outside of his family."

"I see..." Bruce says, shifting.

"If you want to tag team this one with one of the higher EQ players, such as Superman, I give you permission." Sam does not think she's imagining that slight sag of relief.

"Thank you," Bruce says, sliding off the stool. "I don't suppose you have material we could consult...?"

"Actually yes, I happen to have a pamphlet right here. 'So your ghostly body is changing, and how.'"

"You're being more sarcastic than usual."

"You interrupted my lunch, Mr. Wayne."

i've got this highly incoherent pete meta floating around in my head please bear with me

we know that pete is the type of person who seems open and friendly but is actually completely walled up. nobody knows anything about pete's deepest desires or fears or issues because he doesn't talk about them. he's the perfect listener, and finds personal value in checking in on people and listening to them and helping them out, and uses this (possibly unconsciously) as a shield so that no one asks him anything about himself.

so i think it's interesting to consider the exceptions to this, and what it means for him going forwards as someone dating vegas, who is absolutely not going to let that behavior slide.

let's start with the few times that pete opens up in the show, about things that are likely painful for him:

ep3: pete tells porsche he used to play heroes and villains as a kid, and now he knows there's no such thing

ep5: pete tells porsche that tankhun punished him pretty badly once before and it sucked

ep11: pete tells vegas that his dad used to beat him, and never stopped

ep13: pete tells vegas he doesn't feel human anymore and wants to die

ep14: pete tells vegas he's hungry and vegas needs to live to feed him

and one singular instance where he doesn't open up:

ep13: porsche asks pete what happened to him and pete asks him to drop it

now it is time for me to extrapolate a ton of conclusions from relatively little data. hehe

most of these can be summarized as "pete is packaging his past trauma as life experience and offering it up to people as advice / solidarity." note that the trauma is in the past, and pete is not currently experiencing it. he's able to distance his feelings from his truama, talk about it clearly and rationally, and convey the lessons he learned to others who need those lessons right now.

i think this is a way for him to seem like he's open about his feelings without actually being open about feelings that he is CURRENTLY vulnerable about. he can relate to people and connect to their pain, but conveniently is not in any pain for the other party to connect back with him. i don't mean for this to sound like this is reprehensible, on his part. it's just part of why people can think they're close with pete. he's told them things about himself! and then it's much harder to realize that he never tells you these things when he's going through them.

and then there are the instances where he is feeling so much, and is visibly losing it. notably, both of the times where he actually says anything — are to vegas! he doesn't say anything to porsche, even though porsche really tries to get it out of him (granted, he's got good reasons to keep his mouth shut). vegas doesn't even ask, though. either time.

so when, exactly, does he choose to be vulnerable?

in ep14, he tells vegas he's hungry. this absolutely does not come out of his mouth easily. and i'm not sure he would have ever said it, except it was probably the only thing he could have said to vegas to convince vegas that living was worth something. so he is still, kind of sort of, packaging his trauma for someone else. but it's mutually beneficial. if he does it, vegas lives. if vegas lives, he has something worth living for.

in ep13, though? what he's saying about himself doesn't benefit vegas at all. it is truly the only time in the show he speaks up about his pain, for his own self-preservation and nobody else's. and it's when he's been pushed so far past his normal coping mechanisms (smile, don't talk about it, keep it to yourself until it passes, it will pass) and is buried under a huge volume of conflicting emotion. he has been pushed to the brink, and he can't handle it anymore.

this is what it takes, for him to open up and be honest about his pain.

so in the future? if vegas wants pete to tell him what's wrong? vegas is going to have to:

notice when pete is feeling down (likely)

confront him about it (a little harder)

get past all of pete's deflecting without getting angry about it (unlikely, especially early on)

push him to some sort of emotional limit to actually get him to talk (doable! but can he do it in a way that doesn't rely on making pete feel like shit? dunno. is it gonna be kinky either way? probably)

and do all of this before pete gets all of his emotions in order and suppresses them (this is like playing a video game with permadeath on tbh)

in short, vegas is fucked 😂 but by god, is he gonna try. and it's gonna hurt so much for pete, in a way he's absolutely resistant to, because he just cannot be experiencing feelings and talking about them at the same time. it's gonna suck so bad. and whenever vegas gets it wrong, it's going to set them back weeks.

but eventually, there's gonna be a day where vegas asks what's wrong and pete just — answers. and it'll keep happening. and that's what healing looks like.

In these two specifically, it seems like they aren't aware of the mc's presence in the past/alternate timeline/whatever it is. The only other person who seems like they know is Lucifer

Which also lines up with the end of lesson 40, where he's the only one who says welcome back? So like?? Do only him and Barbatos know? Did they not tell anyone?? Diavolo would probably know as well but I haven't seen anything to show that yet. Anyways I don't really like where this is going, I would really prefer they not make everyone forget the mc disappeared

like yeah theres the whole 'only having rep thats robots and aliens and etc' thing which is very much a fair and appropriate response, but also like. at a point you Do just kinda have to go 'Man Just Look At Her.'

i certainly couldnt say it as well as other folks, but... Man Just Look At Her. theres so many threads that are Literally Right There, its kinda hard Not to. id have to study again n cite my sources or whatever but also this is my house. ok.

like theres the obvious 'i see you as a friend' interaction with her and roland sometime mid-to-late ruina, which is. again. Its Right There. but its also the way she looks in lobcorp, and the instant she gets any agency she immediately veers in a completely different direction. (as a reclamation of self, as another small rebellion, as an exploration of how She would like to present herself and be seen)

its that interaction with xiao, her genuine confusion towards the concept of lovers, what they are, what makes it so different from any other sort of person. (as a jab towards her own isolation, the values she was made to uphold, her unfamiliarity towards cityfolk and the ways they carry themselves-- and that seeming contradiction of that affection vs. the way she was told cityfolk Work.)

angela, to me, feels like the type of character to simply Be. for lack of a better term. its a difficult concept to Describe in a way that makes sense, (despite me being, how do you say, In The Same Boat.) its something i could see her toss around out of curiosity, but honestly just... not really care for. she has things to do.

like... angela is just. a very cut and dry character, to put it in a way. she just kinda states things as they are, sometimes rather bluntly. its hard to elaborate because things simply Are. plain and simple, no need to fuss over it. and thats what this feels like itd be, yknow?

also iam just shrimply. forever an angela+roland qpr truther. tbh. like i dont know what the Hell those two have going on but you literally Cannot separate them. i hesitate to call it 'love,' because. well yes, but also no. but also kind of? but not quite. again, it just Is. they simply Are.

its one of those things that just feels Odd seeing her in any other context, in regards to romance or whatever. which is tied to a whole slew of other problems only tangentially related to the subject (shipping content bias, character simplification, and so on and so on,) but its just... man she would Not fucking say that. she would not Do that, she would not Act that way.

like i certainly believe it Is possible to have romantic interpretations with her, but its gonna be. Specific. with the way she carries herself, how she acts, and how she reacts to things. even with the romantic elements, itd still dip into aro experience territory, if you know what im saying. like whoever it is, this shit isnt going to fit into Roles and Archetypes, like how a lot of folks like to write ship content. for lack of a better descriptor, its gonna be Weird.

and thats honestly whats so frustrating about it! you Can have an interesting through-line and interpretation of that sort of thing, but a lot of the time whenever i (rarely) see it, its just... Typical Beauty Standards, Hot Secretary Lady, Scary Controlling Whatever the hell like... i hate t judge but cmon guys we can do so much better than that. ironically, wheres the Love? the respect for who she is, the curiosity on exploring that sort of thing with who she Is? guys come On...

which. grain of salt, because its not like i search out ship content, yknow. im not gonna speak like an authority for stumbling onto stuff sometimes. the fact that it isnt so popular and in-your-face is genuinely refreshing honestly, but. tangent.
