Navigating the vibrant streets of Yokohamabashi Shotengai, my lens led me to a captivating path connecting Odori-Koen Park and Bandobashi Station. Thirty traditional Japanese paintings adorned this path, their brilliance amplified by backlit acrylic panels mounted on wooden frames.
Originating from Yuzawa in Akita Prefecture, these artworks are central to Yuzawa's Tanabata Picture Lantern Festival, a tradition spanning 300 years.
This exhibition is a collaboration between Yuzawa and the Eastern Yokohama Revitalization Association. With hopes of becoming a December tradition, the event aims to bring warmth to winter nights while highlighting Yuzawa's cultural vibrancy and culinary delights.

2024 Sapporo Snow Festival Will Feature Tamagotchi Exhibit
Bandai Japan has just announced that they will be bringing Tamagotchi to the Sapporo Snow Festival, and there’ a lot to be excited about! The Sapporo Snow Festival is a festival held annually in Sapporo, Japan, over seven days in February. You can see large snow sculptures and get some great pictures. This year it’s being held on Sunday, February 4th, 2024 through Sunday, February 11th, 2024 at Odori Park, Tsudome, and Susukino, which are all in the Hokkaidō area. Entry to the venues is free!
Tamagotchi will actually have its own exhibit at the 74th annual Sapporo Snow Festival, which started back in 1950 and now attractive more than 2 million people from Japan and abroad. For the first time there will be two Tamagotchi statues. The first will feature both Mametchi, and Kuchipathci along with a snowman that you’ve seen on the new Tamagotchi Uni! The second snow statue will be of a Tamagotchi Original with Mametchi on screen.
That’s now it! There will even a shop to purchase Tamagotchi products (including some exclusive Tamagotchi x Sapporo Snow Festival products which have yet to be announced), and shoppers picking up the Tamagotchi Uni will be able to get an exclusive limited edition Sapporo Snow Festival Tama Sticker! This Tama Sticker features a limited 16-digit download code which will allow you to download the Shimaenaga (which is a cute and fluffy bird only found in Hokkaido) Hat for your Tamagotchi to wear.
Tamagotchi’s for sale will including the Tamagotchi Uni in all three colors, both lanyards, and a Tamagotchi camera (could this be the same one we saw for the 27th anniversary at Shibuya 109?).
In the past three days, we had a calm and enjoyable time. One entire day was spent exploring Sapporo, and we were lucky enough to visit the remarkable Shiroishi Shrine (白石神社). This shrine is quite special as it is dedicated to a deity associated with competitions, making it the perfect place to seek good fortune in any competitive endeavor. What truly captivated me about this shrine was its enchanting setting. Upon turning to the right of the main shrine and descending the stairs, we discovered a serene garden overlooking a peaceful pond 💟
As part of our Sapporo excursion, we made sure to explore the Odori Park (大通公園1丁目). Known for its tranquil atmosphere, Odori Park is a serene haven. However, it also serves as a versatile venue for Hokkaido's most celebrated seasonal events. From what we learnt, throughout the year, Odori Park hosts a multitude of festivities that showcase the distinct charm of each season. In winter, the park transforms into a magical wonderland for the Snow Festival, where intricate snow sculptures capture the imagination of visitors. During the springtime, the park blossoms with the vibrant Lilac Festival, filling the air with a delightful fragrance. The lively YOSAKOI Soran Festival and beer garden enliven the summer months, drawing people together for energetic performances and refreshing beverages. And as autumn arrives, the park becomes a gathering place for the Autumn Festival, where a diverse array of Hokkaido cuisines tempt the taste buds of eager attendees 🌹
Excitement fills the air as we make preparations for our upcoming weekend trip to Kyoto ❤️
Ever wondered where the Armed Detective Agency is?
Are you a fanfiction writer wanting to get it right? Or just curious? Look, I'm no detective, also not the mangaka. However, with a few Google searches and determination, I could find hints. It's Super Deduction time!
This one post by bsd-bibliophile likely found the building used for a visual and thematic reference. It's the 横浜ユーラシア文化館 (Yokohama Museum of EurAsian Cultures), which makes a whole lot of sense for a work so heavily based on classic writers. That museum is right next to the Nihon-Odori Station, which would solve the mystery on the spot, right?
However, there is more to it. In the OVA Hitori Ayumu, that extra where Kunikida meets Aya in a train station, provides us further context. Check out the screenshots below.
Not me being partial to this character. Anyway.
The “Cyukagai” vs. “Chukagai” vs. “Chūkagai” inconsistency is nothing but a difference in transliteration. There is more than one Romaji system, each one with its own equivalences.
So, if he has stuff to do and places to go, the most logical route is to walk to the nearest train station. That appears to be Motomachi-Chūkagai Station (元町・中華街駅), as seen on the map below. It's the last station of the Minatomirai Line (みなとみらい線), which starts in the Yokohama Station (横浜駅).
Forgive my Google Maps in Portuguese. You get the idea. Side note, the Chūkagai (中華街) is Yokohama Chinatown. How cool is that?
Motomachi-Chūkagai looks like this on the outside:
Right behind that entrance, there is another one, or something that looks exactly like one:
That region is Naka Ward, a busy, central region in Yokohama. From that article, “Naka Ward is a regional commercial center and the old main business district of Yokohama.”
Nihon-Odori and Motomachi-Chūkagai are ~550 m, or a 7-minute walk from one another. Even if there still isn't an exact location, it pinpoints the general area and the vibes.
More screenshots from Hitori Ayumu, just because.
Another side note: Hitori Ayumu (独り歩む) is a wordplay on Kunikida's given name. “Doppo” is written like 独歩. It's the same kanji, see? It means “self-guided”. However, written like “Hitori Ayumu”, it reads like “walking alone”.
If you place the ADA headquarters anywhere in the mentioned area, you're good to go. As for myself, I like to place it in a radius of a 10-minute walk to Motomachi-Chūkagai when I'm writing. Sure, it's a government building. Even if it's in a busy area, things like rent are not a concern.
Just for reference, Japanese people would rather live near train stations, preferably a 20-minute walk from one, or less, if possible. If it takes longer than 20 minutes to get to the station, they might ride a bicycle to a parking spot, leave the bike there (sometimes for a fee), and then go to the station on foot.
Hope it was an entertaining read. Bye!
Bonus: a Google Street View screenshot for Yamashita Park! It's in Naka Ward. There is a touching scene in the show in a very similar spot. Can anyone guess what the scene is? ;)
I didn’t appreciate Odori Park in Sapporo when I was living there. I enjoy spending time there when I visit these days.
Odori Oark splits the city into north and south. It is one block wide, but spans several blocks long.
