Ody Does Math

“Good morning, teacher.” sang the kids, faces radiating vitality.

Indeed, it was a good morning. You can hear the larks chanting in the forest, oak leaves whispering secrets of the wind, and see the open fields bathing in the blazing sunlight casted by Lord Helios. Every bit of this scenery was calling for your attention.

But now is not the right time for that. Commented Athena, in her mind. Now is the time for their math class, and none of them can escape this fact.

So she simply nodded to their greeting. So far so good. She gave a quick glance around the classroom. Odysseus, her favorite student, seemed rather eager for the class. He’s doing good as always, Athena thought. Eurylochus, on the other hand, seemed quite unsettled. Curious. Is it because of his homework? Athena wondered. And as she set her eyes on the next student, she called:

“What are you doing there, Mr. Polites?”

She could see his panic alright. But soon as Polites reclaimed himself she heard him say: “Sorry, Ms. Athena. I was just trying to pack this bag real quick.”

“What for?”

“Er, Ms. Athena…I don’t suppose this is the right place to say—”

“What for, Mr. Polites?”

He sighed. “It’s for a friend of mine, really. Today’s his birthday.”

As he finished, Athena caught a glimpse of the mild blush on Odysseus’s face. It wasn’t hard to figure out what exactly was happening here, but she merely said:

“Well, in that case, I might as well congratulate this friend of yours with a ‘happy birthday’. Hope he gets to be a valiant warrior, a warrior of the mind. And yes, you may sit down, Mr. Polites.”

As everybody settled on their seats, Athena quickly chalked a line of Greek on the blackboard. It reads: ΣΤΟΙΧΕΙΑ ΓΕΩΜΕΤΡΙΚΑ (Elements of Geometry). As soon as she finished, she said:

“Welcome to today’s math class, everyone. We’ll begin with a discussion on a simple problem in your textbook. Now, please turn to page 43, and evaluate the problem quickly. I’ll ask for your ideas in a few minutes.”

It’s not hard. Thought Odysseus. Just some simple geometry. You draw a perpendicular BC at point B with half the length of AB, and…

“Mr. Eurylochus, if you may?”

Eurylochus’s hesitation was all written on his face. And his silence was loud enough to speak for his cluelessness. I should help him. However, it’s not my turn. Thought Odysseus.

Athena apparently noticed something. “Mr. Odysseus, if you may?”

“Yes ma’am. You need to draw a perpendicular BC…now we have an auxiliary right triangle ABC, right? Draw an arc with center C and radius BC intersecting the hypotenuse at a point D. Then draw an arc with center A and radius AD intersecting AB at a point, say E. Now E should be the golden ratio point.”

“Good job. Now prove it.”

”Prove it?” now it was Odysseus’s turn to hesitate, but he hoped that he didn’t show it. However, Athena was quick to pick up something…else. “Well,” he started, “all I gotta do is…huh, what’s this bag for?”

A look at Polites was sufficient to explain everything.

“Mr. Polites! You seem quite eager to hand the present out, I see. Why don’t you give Mr. Odysseus a hand, by proving this point E to be the golden ratio point as he claims?”

Polites was eager, alright. He stood up swiftly, and said, “May I have a chalk, Ms. Athena?” After a moment Polites finished the proof on the chalkboard, saving the day. Then Athena complimented both Polites and Odysseus, and the class moved on.

But Eurylochus was uncomfortable with the compliment that Odysseus had received. Geometry is his strong point alright, thought Eurylochus, but let’s just wait till we get to arithmetics.

…

And soon they got to arithmetics. But there were only 10 minutes left for the class. So Athena decided to give a little quiz.

“I have a challenge, a test of skills.” said Athena, “the problem is, are you all ready for it?”

All nods. Ok. “Then let us begin by introducing a geographic fact. This is Troy, 600 miles away from us if you travel by sea. Now suppose that a ship travels at a speed of 5.755 miles per hour without the wind, and it is heading from Troy to Ithaca in full speed, and when it is 2.8 miles away from Ithaca it takes a turn to Temesa, sailing through 290 miles in total, and from there to Aeaea 158 miles away. Suppose the ship sails in a uniform speed, without any wind. How long does it take in total?”

Odysseus could see their expressions clearly. He could see Eurylochus busy doing the calculations, which wasn’t a surprise at all since he was so good at it. I could use a good right-hand man like him. Odysseus thought. And let’s see how Polites is doing. He seems to be struggling with it, which is not a good sign…

But what are you doing, Odysseus?

He had no idea. To be honest he haven’t even figured out how a decimal point works, but he’ll do it anyway, after all he’s a warrior of the mind! What do those miles add up to? 420? 420 divided by 5.755 is…730, right? Wait that 730 looks so familiar…isn’t that twice as long as 365 days? My goddess, that’s a really long time!

“Mr. Odysseus, what’s your answer?” From afar, he could hear Athena calling to him. But this time, there is no more hesitation. He had found his confidence. He knew his result to be true, though somehow he doubted the validity. But he’s gonna answer it anyway, knowing that had it been wrong, the fault was not his at all, but Athena’s. She provided the data, didn’t she? So nothing can go wrong. Just you chill, just you stand, just you answer.

”Ma’am…it’s two long years.”

#It’s 181.6 hours with no storm or tidal wave #He made two different mistakes over the decimal points #see if you can spot them #And the last mistake was about unit conversion #odysseus #epic the musical #fanfic #math #12 long years #somehow i don’t suppose this little nerdy fic can go popular? #Nonetheless I’d still like to nerd out something concerning my data #So I consulted the wikipedia to discover that specific map made by Abraham Ortelius depicting the return journey of Ody #It sets the land of Laestrygonians and Aeaea in the south of Rome #Which means that if Ody was to be blown by the storm from Ithaca in-sight (about 2.8 miles away) all the way back to Aeolia #And from there to the Land of the Giants #he’ll have to take a slight turn to visit Temesa #putting the distance he traveled from Ithaca to Temesa to be 290 miles (I checked the map literally) #Yep the distances are all read from the map of the sailing distance calculator #And the speed of the ship was VMG (5 knots look pretty normal so I picked it) #And by inserting those three mistakes that everyone has potential to make #I get the number cleanly (with some rounding offs ofc) #And isn’t that incredible? #Gosh I’m so excited about this little coincidence

when i was a little undiagnosed autistic kid i used to get SO excited about patterns ™️and greatly overestimated how much everyone else cared. So like I had locker number 123 one year and i was positive that was going to make me the most loved person in my school, like i thought i was the chosen one ,this is the thing that was going to finally make people like me, this is what ive been missing my entire life etc etc. And i was extremely confused when people were not lining up at my locker to see.

my school identification number had the sequence '654'in it and i was certain that my grade was eventually going to hold interrogation sessions that would break the Geneva convention in order to find out who had my id number because it might be one of the best lunch numbers to exist, like not only were the numbers by eachother BUT ALSO there was a 5 in it and two other numbers and 5 + 2 obviously equals seven and that was SO COOL (obviously 7 is one of the best numbers everyone knows that)

SPEAKING OF 7 my great aunts license plate was one of my favorite things as a child, because the letter part of it had 3 numbers that were also in her last name AND they were in the right order AND they were evenly distributed (so like if her last name were smith it would be SIH) and not only that but the letters were 5337 which, again i liked 7's, so like if you took the amount of numbers there are in the sequence that aren't the 5 or 7 (the two 3's) and added it to the 5, you would get the last number in the sequence. But also if you added the 3's together you'd get 6 and if you add that with the amount of numbers left besides the 7 again (the one 5) you would also get 7. And I swore she got that plate custom made because what are the fucking odds that you would get a license plate like that BY CHANCE

#ok so my boss asked me to focus on one kind of cookie and our new cakes #yesterday i only did the cookies but i didn't finish them #the plan for today was finished the cookies (quick and simple) qnd make the cakes (much more time consuming) #ok so i start making the cookies right. and im going over the number i need a million times in my head. i wrote it down. #it was very simple math but i rechecked myself a bunch. ok. #i needed 24 baked cookies. to make 12 each. of the same design cookie but iced with 2 different colors. #very simple right????? apparently not #bc at some point.... my brain decided.... i needed 24 of EACH COLOR.......... so i made a big batch of dough....... #then i was like...... hmmmmm...... wait....... i did the simple math about 37 more times...... no yeah that's too much dough #ok WHATEVER. more dough for extra cookies!!! i was low on some number cookies ill make a few numbers cool great #but then i looked at the message of what my boss had asked me to do again. and even better news!! #the new cake designs (that i was supposed to start next) have cookies on top as decor!!!! great!!! i have a lot of dough!!!!! #so. i was like. im gonna cut out a few number cookies. then im gonna check exactly what kind of cookies to make for the cakes #and you know what i did..... i started cutting number cookies.... and i couldn't stop....i was like hmm actually i need a few more of those #ill cut out some extra number 6s!!! to have :) #AND THEN I USED ALL MY DOUGH. AND I BAKED THEM. SKDBSKDBSJ #so now. lowkey stressing bc accidentally making too much dough set me back (i have now completely forgot about the cookies for the cakes) #but its ok ill hustle. i finished icing my top priority cookies. i get the transfers done so the other stores will have them too. im speedy #also. many of the cookies i baked are not iced bc i can get back to those :)) next week :)) they're extras :))))) #SO THEN. i start watching the vids about how to make the new cakes.. uh oh.. i have now remembered i was supposed to make different cookies #FINE WHATEVER ILL FIGURE IT OUT LATER!!!! this is a pretty good representation of a lot of my favorite things to write for sure. huge fan of everything listed here.

HOWEVER

i do enjoy writing some good angst. my writing tastes have changed a bit over the past couple years, and i think now i'm a lot more focused on things that i believe are realistic, rather than idealistic, so in general but particularly with angst it's a lot more grounded and in some cases grittier than the kind of angst i was writing before, which was a lot of Big Poetry and Drama? at least to me?? i don't know. and as an unrelated addition, ive found lately that i really enjoy writing characters interacting with kids. i just think it's really funny.

and of course how can i exclude the most important of my favorite tropes: kitchens are for lovers. if there's a kitchen, i'm there.

Scribbling ideas for stalien numbers and god this is breaking my brain fgnsjdnd

#rat rambles #oc posting #probably wont post it since Im not sure I wanna fully make official characters for them yet since again graphic design isnt my specialty #well more so Id need a lot of stuff I dont have to rly get the ~realism~ #for example stalien hands lol #mainly what Im stuck with is weather their characters would have any curves or not #their writing is traditionally carved with their thumbs so I feel like theyd naturally arc #but most of the actually movement is usually done with the arm #which I think would still probably have an arc but idk #also the shape of the fond itself rly depends on how indented it would be given that its done with their finger tip hoove nails #now either way I imagine itd look different if it could be seen on their like messaging apps and such #since usually most touch pads made for writing on their phones or computers are more made to be used with just movement of the hand #not that stalien tech has visual screens that you could see the writing on but still #this honestly probably means that if most modern staliens tried to write on clay traditionally itd look a bit slanted and sloppy #again I cant rly know for sure though since yknow. I dont have stalien hands gxngskdh #but yeah the bigger thing is abt actually knowing what to write for whatever numbers #because their number system is broken into threed and sixes #and also another part of designing the initial 5 numbers I need is makinf them all stackable ontop of eachother since thats how they write #double didgits and such #for example their number for 6 would be their 1 and 2 overlapped and up til 12 would be followed by the other single digit #and then once reached 12 the 2 in the combined number would be switcher with a 3 #and once they run through that past the 5 digit the first 1 would be switched to a 2 and would be overlayed by a slightly deeper 1 #oh and the second number overlayed is enscribed deeper to differenciate #oh and if both numbers are the same the second is made a lil shorter #and this goes until we get past 5 5 at which point the 5 5 is preserved and another 1 2 is added #and yeah you can see why this breaks my brain lol #its hard enough to read let alone write a specific number intentionally #like smaller numbers arent too hard but I think once you get past like 36 it starts getting rly confusing #cause thats when we enter the 3rd digits #wait itd actually be 43 my bad hmdhdkhd

something about the Goo Tuber’s been making me think about its balance in SR lately. its damage pretty much matches the Splat Charger here, while it does a bit more in Turf. i think i’ll add a more of those thoughts in my tags in way more detail, but the shorthand: buff the Goo’s full charge damage and higher range of partial charge, buff the Charger’s partial charge a bit.

#video #splat series #splatoon 2 #5/12/22 #partial charge for goo tuber goes up to 180 to splat chargers 150. #honestly if you look at those numbers they match up... kinda weirdly? at least it feels so to me. #in turf the splat charger is 40-80 with a full charge being 160 #in turf the goo's range is 30-140 with a full charge being 180. #in SR the splat charger is 50-150 with a full charge being 300 #in SR the goo's range is 50-180 with a full charge being 300 #like. that looks... pretty weird. #ok well maybe just me since i've spent time considering these numbers #i dunno i wanna change these numbers a bit. at least the goo has full charge shots be 12% to splats 18%? #it still needs a quarter second longer too get that full charge though. and the range is still shorter. #and it doesn't get blowthrough without a full charge. #i think i'd change splat charger to partial charge goes 60-180 #and goo tuber 50-220 and full charge 350 to give it something that reflects the turf data a bit better. #also gives it a bit of an edge over the splat against cohocks #1 full charge and a tap is 400 damage. #but the splat now deals with stingers reliably- 60 per pot. #the high ranges of 150->180 and 180->220 seem intriguing but i don't think they actually change too much. #considering full charge damage #additionally the squiffer does more damage than the turf data might suggest but it feels way more natural here #the only charger which at full charge cannot take out a steelhead should be the bamboozler

Every now and then (once a month) I remember my best friend from when I was 11 to 12, and how I was obsessed with her as more than just a friend was (I didn't admit I had a crush on her but I subconsciously knew) and how her mom, who met me once for less than 5 minutes, clocked me as a lesbian before even I knew.
