Series 6 Post 19: He is the main representative of the class of divinities called Æsir, Allfǫðr.... God of wisdom, healing, death, royalty, the gallows, knowledge, war, battle, victory, sorcery, poetry, frenzy, runic alphabet.
🌸 The Old Norse theonym Óðinn is a cognate of other medieval Germanic names, including Old English Wōden, Old Saxon Wōdan, Old Dutch Wuodan, and Old High German Wotan (Old Bavarian Wûtan). Translated as 'lord of frenzy',or as 'leader of the possessed',Wōðanaz stems from the Proto-Germanic adjective *wōðaz ('possessed, inspired, delirious, raging') attached to the suffix *-naz ('master of')
🌸 The modern English weekday name Wednesday derives from Old English Wōdnesdæg, meaning 'day of Wōden'. Cognate terms are found in other Germanic languages, such as Middle Low German and Middle Dutch Wōdensdach (modern Dutch woensdag), Old Frisian Wērnisdei (≈ Wērendei) and Old Norse Óðinsdagr (cf. Danish, Norwegian, Swedish onsdag).
🌸 He wields Gungnir, his spear, and rides Sleipnir, his eight-legged steed, another mythological allegory of Irminsul or Yggdrasill. Son of Borr and the giantess Bestla, brother of Víli and Vé, husband of Frigg and father of many of the gods, including Thor and Baldr. He is also often referred to as "Father of the Gods" or Allfǫðr, Allvater, Allfather.
🌸First of all the two ravens Huginn and Muninn (the names mean Thought and Memory), whom he sends around the world every day so that, when they return at sunset, they whisper to him what they have seen; and then two wolves, Geri and Freki, to whom he throws his food in the dinners of Valhalla since he feeds exclusively on mead and wine.

Loki Knows...
Me: *waiting for mum to pick me up*
Me: *sees old crush from high-school*
(A few words are exchanged.)
Loki: Ew, why’d you like him?
Me: At the time I thought he was cute.
Loki: But, he’s an idiot.
Me: I see we’re going to get along famously.
Me: *smiles*
Loki: *smiles*
Wow, my first ever discourse with Loki and we’re already judging people together. Nice.

I've had this piece for a while and she finally got a frame today and a place on my wall! I love her so much! This is Freya, the Norse goddess of love, battle, and prophesy, among other things. She's kind when needed and fierce when needed, but always nurturing. She teaches that the rose is both flower and thorns and you'd best remember that. :) Freya was the first goddess to reach out to me as I started my eclectic Pagan path in 2016 and she's one of the goddesses I work with most frequently. A constant source of strength and guidance. Thank you, Freya. )O( Artwork by Laura Daligan. Laura's Etsy page: https://www.etsy.com/shop/LauraRedWitch DESCRIPTION: Image shows a picture in a mirrored frame hanging on a wall. The picture depicts Freya, a beautiful woman with long, bright blond hair, robed in a cloak of feathers. She's standing against a starry, misty background and has two large gray house cats on either side of her. #Freya #NorsePantheon #NorsePaganism #GoddessOfLove #QueenOfTheValkyries #LauraDaligan #WitchesOfInstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/Bo2rh_qgS_n/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1982lhnlydrrq

Series 6 Post 23: God of war, duels, courage, law, honor and justice. A valorous and powerful member of the Æsir and patron of warriors and mythological heroes.
🌸 The name Týr means "god" (cf. Hangatyr, "god of the hanged", one of Odin's epithets probably inherited by Týr in his role as judge), but it should be noted that direct references to the god and epithet of "chief of the gods" are still the subject of debate.
🌸 However, it represents a different warrior-god from the Greek Ares, more impetuous and youthful; in Norse mythology the figure closest to this model of god of war is probably Thor, undoubtedly described as the strongest of all gods, and this fact could mean a further link between these two deities, even if Týr embodied more than another is the double figure of god of war, justice and law, given that he presents himself as the model of a mature, expert, thoughtful warrior ready for personal sacrifice.
🌸 Fenrir, son of the god Loki and the giantess Angrboða, was threatening the Æsir so much that they chained him in a distant place with the excuse of wanting to subject him to a test of strength. Despite the work of Odin's blacksmiths, however, the mighty wolf manages to free himself twice, forcing the father of the gods to resort to the arts of the dwarves who lived in Niðavellir: the supreme god then prepares a snare, apparently fragile, and challenges the wolf again, who, sensing the deception, demands a hand in his jaws as a pledge during the enchainment; it is Týr who sacrifices himself, losing his arm but allowing the immobilization of the ferocious wolf.
🌸 The Poetic Edda describes him as the son of Hymir, while later editions of the Prose Edda state that he was the son of Odin and Hróðr, the giantess and later wife of Hymir.

Polytheist Art Witch #1
This is a little UPG that combines two parts of my practice; art and working with deities. I hope to add more of these as i go along (hence the number in the title).
Associating Loki with greens and blues (instead of red), because they’re literally called “low key” colors.
*Honestly kept cracking up every time my teacher said “low key colors” in my class.*

Series 6 Post 22: Goddess of love, eroticism, beauty, gold, seduction, fertility, seiðr, war, death and prophetic virtues. She belonging to the lineage of the Vani, after the peace that concluded the conflict between the two divine lineages, she was sent to the Ases as a hostage and she lived for some time with them.
🌸 Her name, Freyja in Old Norse (meaning Lady), is sometimes found written in other forms (Freia, Freya). Freyja, in Norse mythology, is sometimes identified with Frigg, goddess Asinia wife of Odin, with whom she shares the protection of fertility and fecundity and the role of protector of pregnant women.
🌸 Loki defines her as a nymphomaniac, always ready to satiate her desires with any type of partner, from the Jǫtunn to the Elves, and in fact her irrepressible desire is sung in the Mansǫngr, literally songs for men, amorous lyrics, officially forbidden, but widespread in alcoves.
🌸 She is the daughter of Njǫrðr and stepdaughter of Skaði, sister of Freyr and wife of Óðr, because of whom she suffers love pains, since he leaves her to undertake long journeys, forcing her to fruitless pursuits, during which she lets herself go crying of golden tears. Together with her husband, she gives birth to two splendid girls, with emblematic names: Gersemi and Hnoss, synonyms of "treasure".
🌸 Freyja loves songs of love and incites lovers to invoke her; she also adds that Freyja rides into battlefields and is entitled to half of the fallen she will lead into battle during Ragnarǫk, while the other half is from Óðinn. At the end of the war between the Vani and the Asi, she goes to live with her brother among the latter. She dwells in the Sessrumnir palace, meaning "of many chairs", located in Folkvang, "battlefield"; she gets out of it every day traveling in a gleaming wagon pulled by two cats (presumed to be of Norwegian Forest breed).

Series 6 Post 20: Goddess of marriage, motherhood and clairvoyance. One of the most important deities in Norse mythology, celestial wife of Odin, she is also called "lady of the sky" or "lady of the gods"
🌸 The etymology of the term Frigg can be found in many Nordic cultures, both in the Scandinavian ones as in the Old Norse (genitive Friggjar) or in the Swedish word fria ("candidate for marriage") or in the Icelandic frjá ("to love"). Either in Old Saxon Fri ("lady"), or in English Frig, or in Germanic Frijō. Furthermore, Frigg is a word related to Sanskrit, in which the definition prīyā́, meaning "wife", appears.[
🌸 Frigg's palace in Ásgarðr is the Fensalir, meaning "marshy halls". This may have been because marshy lands were considered sacred to the goddess. The goddess Sága, who has been described drinking with Óðinn from her golden cup in her "Sunken Benches" hall, may be Frigg, with a different name. Frigg is the protector of brides and births and the Scandinavian people used to use the zolfino rennet plant (Galium verum) as a sedative, it was called Frigg's grass.
🌸 Friday was formerly the day consecrated both to the goddess Frigg and to the celebration of weddings and the fruitful union of the married couple. So one of the peculiar tasks of the deity consisted in assisting couples, helping sterile women and those still alien to acts of love. In addition to this, according to tradition, the goddess assisted pregnant women, trying to limit their pain and suffering.
🌸The constellation Orion's Belt was also known as Frigg's Spinning Mill (Friggerock or Frejerock). Some say that the constellation is located in the celestial equator and that the stars that rotate in the night were moved by Frigg's spinning wheel.

Series 6 Post 16: Goddess of the grain, the crop, the land and the harvest; and wife of Thor.
🌸 Sif's name means: "Relative" or "Spouse". Her name is also used to identify Earth in Skáldskaparmál 87. Sif appears in both the Prose and Poetic Eddas, and also in skaldic poetry, where gold is often referred to as "Sif's hair".
🌸 She was considered the most beautiful of the goddesses. Snorri calls her "the sibyl". She was however a warrior goddess, sometimes considered to be among the Valkyries (as was Freyja herself, in charge of selecting the Einherjar for Valhalla) and she was believed to have some influence over her destiny. Several scholars associate her hair with grain and harvests and therefore place this goddess to preside over crops and fertile land.
🌸 The Lokasenna tells how Sif got golden hair, which grew as if it were natural. The god of lies and deception Loki, always ready to play evil jokes on the other gods, managed to cut her hair in her sleep and that Thor, enraged, demanded from Loki, threatening to kill him, the return to Sif of a golden blonde hair and shining. Loki, to remedy, managed to cleverly put two pairs of dwarves in competition for who had manufactured the most wonderful gifts for the gods.
🌸 The dwarves "sons of Ívaldi" made for Sif a new, even more splendid golden hair, as well as the spear Gungnir for Odin and the ship Skíðblaðnir for Freyr. Instead, the gods obtained from the dwarves Eitri and Brokkr the Draupnir ring for Odin, the hammer Mjöllnir for Thor and the golden boar Gullinbursti for Freyr.

Series 6 Post 15: Hammer-wielding God associated with lightning, thunder, storms, sacred groves and trees, strength, the protection of humankind, hallowing, and fertility.
🌸 “Thor” has become in Icelandic Þór, Old German and Dutch Donar, Anglo-Saxon Þūnor, Faroese Tórur, Swedish, Norwegian and Danish Tor, Frisian Tonger; the runic letter Þ is pronounced th. The name "Thor" and its variants all derive from the Proto-Germanic *Thunraz, i.e. "lightning", "thunder" (in today's Germanic languages it has become thunder, Dutch donder, German Donner in English).
🌸 According to mythology he is the son of Odin, father of the gods, and of Jǫrð; belonging to the divine lineage of the Aesir, he lives in Ásgarðr, in the kingdom of Þrúðvangar and more precisely in the hall called Bilskirnir: it has more than five hundred and forty rooms and it is the largest abode among those of the gods.
🌸 Moreover, he lives there with his family: his wife, the goddess of the harvest, of the grain, of the harvest and of the earth, is called Sif: little is known about her except that she has golden hair like the grain, made for her by the dwarves after Loki cut off her original hair. However, Thor had other lovers: the giantess Járnsaxa gave birth to his son Magni while with Sif he had Þrúðr and Móði; according to tradition he also has a stepson, Ullr, who was in reality the only son of Sif. He also has two servants, Röskva and Þjálfi, perhaps given to him by a giant.
🌸 The loud and terrible storms that appear in the sky, accompanied by the violent roar of thunder and lightning, are a clear sign of his passage and of his divine power. The Icelandic terminology itself manifests the influence of the god and his figure in the daily lexicon, as well as in the Scandinavian collective imagination: in fact, until the seventeenth century, in Sweden, the word corresponding to "thunder" it was åsekia, literally 'the proceeding of the god (ase) on a vehicle'.
