Today Anitha as...
Series 6 Post 16: Goddess of the grain, the crop, the land and the harvest; and wife of Thor.
🌸 Sif's name means: "Relative" or "Spouse". Her name is also used to identify Earth in Skáldskaparmál 87. Sif appears in both the Prose and Poetic Eddas, and also in skaldic poetry, where gold is often referred to as "Sif's hair".
🌸 She was considered the most beautiful of the goddesses. Snorri calls her "the sibyl". She was however a warrior goddess, sometimes considered to be among the Valkyries (as was Freyja herself, in charge of selecting the Einherjar for Valhalla) and she was believed to have some influence over her destiny. Several scholars associate her hair with grain and harvests and therefore place this goddess to preside over crops and fertile land.
🌸 The Lokasenna tells how Sif got golden hair, which grew as if it were natural. The god of lies and deception Loki, always ready to play evil jokes on the other gods, managed to cut her hair in her sleep and that Thor, enraged, demanded from Loki, threatening to kill him, the return to Sif of a golden blonde hair and shining. Loki, to remedy, managed to cleverly put two pairs of dwarves in competition for who had manufactured the most wonderful gifts for the gods.
🌸 The dwarves "sons of Ívaldi" made for Sif a new, even more splendid golden hair, as well as the spear Gungnir for Odin and the ship Skíðblaðnir for Freyr. Instead, the gods obtained from the dwarves Eitri and Brokkr the Draupnir ring for Odin, the hammer Mjöllnir for Thor and the golden boar Gullinbursti for Freyr.
