loki said i could show off his candle, i need to get him a green one but i gotta wait to go outside again lmao we’re having a quiet 3am conversation with runes bc i just found out some rlly bad shit about my family and it’s rlly upset me
one last thing re: the last post, I swear: while that same company has done some heinous shit (or attempted) in terms of trademarking cultural phrases or events (see here, and here), and has a history of being able to do terrible things to IP law anyway... the only actual take down notices I've seen were a) from a Marv!Loki cosplayer who is now on private so I can't look at details, but probably not myth-related, and then this person who then admitted multiple times in the thread that it was based on a comic run from 2019 (note: while I think you should be able to do it, tbh, if you DO, under current laws, probably best NOT to explicitly mention it was inspired by their IP)
I also went and did a quick search on both versions ("loki norse myth" and then just "loki") on RB and... the least one can say is they're doing a shit job on enforcement.
So again, I loathe every company involved here if only because I feel some weird urge to look into it and the surrounding outrage (I mean there's a lot more, but ha ha funny), but the main cause of the outrage seems to be that they're taking specifically merch of the mythological version down from "small pagan artists," and while as mentioned above I don't think that's beyond them, given that the two examples I *could* find were actually legit related to the owned IP version... where are the other ones?
Like, if you don't trust them not to go for that later, and/or you're concerned about the overreach of corps and merchandising into storytelling and freedom of expression, along with the stories they're telling; excellent, let's have that conversation, but there's a lot of this that is shaping up to look like people got mad over one post (that the OP linked themselves to the owned IP in question) and ran with that idea, which, look, other than "not asking questions" not boding well for anyone, I have a limited amount of energy in my old age and I like to stab once accurately rather than spamming blade flurry on Change.org if we don't need to be; beyond being useless being wrong when its avoidable is also a bad look
also, to add a hot take here: if I am right, and they're only attempting to go after fanworks related to that IP/company, IMO it would still actually be a very good thing to still support those artists and call for changes in how that entire system works, but I do get the vibe that many of the people currently angered a) wouldn't care if they weren't under the impression they were directly targeted and b) many might actually be supportive of the venture if it didn't, because it's a changed and non-religious (at least specifically) version of these stories and I mean why question the methods if it gets rid of it, am I right-- oh wait, fuck
anyway, maybe at this point bus drama would be a nice distraction
i might show u guys a picture of lokis candle later if he’s chill with it but also last week or two weeks ago i went shopping for a pendulum jar bc i wanna try using a pendulum in a jar and i thought i found one but i didn’t it was actually three tinyish tea light glass candle holders and i used two of them to give loki and lucifer some water as an offering and very surprisingly a few days later i go to change the water and i go to pour lokis water out but what do i find ? there’s no water inside it at all and there’s only a tiny bit left in lucifers, at first i was like it’s gotta be because of the weather (bc it was rlly hot) there’s no way my offerings have just straight up disappeared, but then also i had been talking to loki most that week and i found it rlly weird how his water was compeltely gone and lucifers was nearly gone and i barely had talked to him that week and so i refilled the little offering bowls again, made sure they weren’t close to my candles and it’s been violently raining all week long and today i go to look again and all of lucifer n lokis water is completely gone again, i’ve worked with loki for nearly four whole years and i don’t think this has ever happened so i’m just kinda :00 about it all
Yesterday I overworked myself way too much, pushed myself way too far. And Loki, the sneaky bastard, went "oh I want cuddles" and settled behind me with his arms around me, nuzzling my neck. And I was like oh this is normal I like this :3 but then he'd put me to sleep like that before I even realized what was going on -_-
Honestly, as both someone who works with the deity Loki and also someone who’s a fan of MCU Loki, I’m so happy to see elements of deity Loki in MCU Loki. Like, the whole hyper verbalism, the excitement, the over the top dramatic moments? That’s so Deity Loki and I’m so glad they’re finally letting a Loki be a Loki and not just some broody sad bad dude.
I’m just curious: opinions on Jackson Crawford? I like his translation of the Poetic Edda, but he also calls Loki evil in his intro. Is he a good source for a Lokean?
His recent Loki video is accurate and very noncontroversial in my eyes. Like, I feel you'd be hard-pressed to find someone, Heathen or not, pro-Lokean or anti-Lokean, who disagrees with the content there. Different people have different personal gnosis and/or opinions on later folklore regarding the fire association (or lack thereof), but the video was specifically covering Loki's portrayal in the Eddas, where it's pretty cut and dry.
I don't agree with his takes on everything, in the same way that I don't agree with anyone's takes on everything. His translation isn't the translation I turn to the most. But his credentials are solid, and he's vocally against the use of medieval nordic literature for furthering white supremacist agendas, and his content is very accessible, which already puts him way ahead of most things new Lokeans are going to run into. Especially on Youtube.
It is important to keep in mind that he is a non-Heathen academic, and he's looking at stuff from a purely academic context. IIRC, he has stated multiple times that he's not out to tell modern Heathens how to do their religion. His stuff isn't a good place to turn to when it comes to actually building your religious practice or getting into a devotional headspace.
But in terms of understanding what the Eddas actually say, and the historical context in which they were written, academics are invaluable. They study this stuff as their career, and they aren't necessarily coming at it with the same biases as someone who's heavily invested in the modern religion would (though academics have their own biases as well.) For me, this additional perspective is well worth putting up with language that's less reverent than I would use to describe the gods.
So apparently this has going on. Disney’s copyright has gone extremely rigid regarding anything that has the Loki name on the title (be it redbubble products, for example) and are taking them down. This is actually sick, and something that they have done in the past too with Día de los muertos merch. Our community is sooner or later going to be prejudiced by this too, and we need to speak up. They’re copyrighting people's beliefs, religion and A LITERAL GOD as if they invented mythology or some shit.
As a side note, this tweet sparked some really interesting conversation on worshipping Loki too, go check that out that chaos too.
So I was just sending some asks to people about a Norse god and it hit me hard... What if they ignore me or don't take me seriously because of my profile? Like I've got MCU Loki as my pfp and background image, then my user name... Never have I felt self conscious about my profile and beliefs but I've seen so many issues with people believing in Norse gods and enjoying MCU gods.
I found the Norse gods through MCU. Loki Laufeyson was wonderful, I love him and the way he lived because I felt understood.
Loki Laufeyjarson is even better. He is here, sweet, he listens, and loves me. He tells me he understands and still loves me no matter what.
I love them both so much. Mind you Loki the god is not too fond of that, but still.
And I'm sitting here like... Shit, these people are gonna take one look at my profile and think I mean MCU. Or think I'm a Joke who just thinks the gods are like the MCU gods.
i played cards with loki today, and then decided to draw my favourite cosplayers cosplay of myth loki bc they look *chef kiss* and what do i suddenly get out of nowhere ? a new phone,, i’m not saying it’s loki buttt 👀👀
