MHA 414: What Izuku’s and Tomura’s Memories Mean…

As the connection between All For One and One For All become stronger (a consequence of the current plan to transfer the vestiges) Izuku’s and Tomura’s memories are beginning to blend together. And each of the memories shown are equally as important as each other.

Izuku’s first memory being his fight with Shouto at the Sports Festival is especially important, because it foreshadows what Izuku will have to do in order to save Tomura…

His fight with Shouto during the Sports Festival was the first time that Izuku was able to save someone.

Not saving someone physically, but being able to save their heart.

Izuku will have to save Tomura both physically and emotionally in order to truly save him. His first memory from his subconscious being of him saving Shouto explicitly shows that.

Izuku won’t be able to save Tomura’s heart through violent means.

Tomura’s first memories shown are also important, as it foreshadows what will eventually allow Tomura to let himself accept Izuku’s help. Each memory are of significant moments that he had with the league, all of them being moments that had a lasting impression on him.

His first time meeting Dabi and Himiko, who were the first people from the outside (people who weren’t directly under All For One’s influence) that he accepted into the league.

His memory of Spinner challenging him, and what Tomura’s goals are (Spinner seeking reassurance from Tomura)…

Tomura’s first thoughts throughout the series have consistently been of the league, and what their wants and needs are. Tomura views them as exceptions from his destruction. He wants them all to have a future where they can live how they see fit.

He wants them to be happy.

Tomura will have to accept that he cannot have both the league's happiness and the destruction of everything.

He will have to choose, but before Tomura can do that he will have to accept the true reason behind his anger, which isn’t what AFO manipulated him into thinking.

Tomura's anger (which drives his want for destruction) stems from his inability to understand how people are able to ignore the suffering of others.

Tomura isn't able to ignore it. He never has.

His inability to ignore others suffering is what made him originally want to be a hero.

Tomura doesn’t understand how people are able to turn a blind eye and go on with their lives despite seeing injustice happen right in front of them.

(How could his family ignore his suffering even though it was happening right in front of them? How could people have walked past him even when he was alone scared and covered in his family’s blood…?)

His anger also stems from a place of hurt.

Tomura copes with no one reaching out and helping him by thinking that he was being punished for killing his family. He copes with people ignoring his suffering by convincing himself that he wanted to kill his family.

(Which stems from his resentment of his family ignoring his suffering, and the sense of relief Tomura felt after killing his father, knowing that he will no longer have to be subjected to his abuse.)

Tomura thinks that his destruction is something inherent within him. That he’s inherently bad.

That he will never feel good again…

Tomura doesn’t see a future for himself where he can be happy.

Izuku will have to prove to Tomura that he isn’t any of these things, and that he does have a future where he can be happy…

Which will be what allows him to truly save Tenko.

so. youre telling me. that he’s got an ego. he knows he’s fucking smart. and yet he’s actually quite caring and possibly misunderstood ???

i think he comes off as really distant and full of himself based on what the other characters say in their voicelines. they know he does good work, but he works in his own way (which is often not by the rules). and i think probably he’s seen as the kind of genius that people can’t stand—he knows he’s a genius. and even though thats all probably completely true, like he’s probably super full of himself LOL, even just his introductory voiceline shows us that maybe he actually isn’t that selfish or self absorbed. he might know that he’s a good detective, but he still immediately notices the traveler’s condition and wants to hear all about their story. which, idk, maybe he has some ulterior motive, but from what i can tell he’s quite genuine despite his joking attitude.

he wants to catch criminals and put bad guys away—and whether that’s for the rush that he gets from solving cases or wanting to protect people, it’s a good deed either way. he’s keen, he’s sharp, and he knows people. from his teapot voicelines he says that he wants to play a game with the traveler where he guesses all the things you’ve done when you come home—like who you’ve met, what you’ve eaten, where you’ve gone. i think he’s genuinely so thrilled by intellectual stimulation, which is fascinating, and he definitely knows that he’s smart, which he knows how to use as a weapon.

so yea anyways i have no idea what this post is trying to say i just had some thoughts about him bc i went back and read through what others said about him. thoma said to steer clear of him, kujou sara said that he is extremely frustrating, and it goes on. but heizou’s voicelines tell us a different story u know!! i think he’s one of those misunderstood dudes except he doesnt give a shit that hes misunderstood which honestly??? is super hot👍

he reminds me so much of shawn spencer from the show psych, which you should definitely watch if you havent. phenomenal crime/mystery show with incredible humor and characters and just muah chefs kiss everything about it is delectable. it’s like brooklyn 99 if brooklyn 99 wasn’t shot in the style of the office

idk if anyone else experiences this, but im SO bad at like picturing a characters voice when im reading something, like i guess some people can just automatically hear character voices of what theyre reading but it doesnt happen naturally for me at all so i always end up reading everything in my own voice.. but if im reading fanfiction or a book with a show/movie adaptation, i like to look up clips and try to listen to the characters voice while reading it so i can picture it better, and suddenly the text has SOOOO much more impact with the right voice.. i feel like this is gonna sound stupid or like common sense but i swear i just feel like im missing out because it doesnt have the same effect when i read it how i normally do..

very specifically talking about saiki, because he has such a specific tone and i just can't replicate it in my head no matter how hard i try, so whenever im reading the manga or a fic, i gotta listen to clips of him talking because the experience is so. much. better.

do you think that the SA with apollo was planned from the start? lots of people seem to think rachel meant it to just be bad sex and then retconned it to be assault

oof, that's a tough one. i have definitely seen that argument / belief in anti lo circles and several other lo critical blogs have discussed this in far more depth with far better understanding than i, so i won't novel spam the dash, but i am honestly and genuinely torn on it tbh.

like it wouldn't surprise me if that's true, because rachel has demonstrated over and over how poorly she understands consent, safe dynamics, and just female agency in the first place. there are definitely some aspects of the initial assault that, looking back on it now, made me wonder. considering how rachel's been trying to retcon some of this out it's difficult looking back at the assault and wonder what exactly rachel's thought process was in the plot as a whole.

that being said, i did not start reading lo until long after rachel was fully fleshed out on webtoons, so i could not even begin to say how she was on tumblr, or anything before the season 2 finale tbqh. and i can give her the credit on this at least, i have always viewed the assault as 1000% no doubt no question assault. genuinely it scares me if rachel wrote and drew that whole thing out and didn't know it was rape, because for many many many people, myself included, it was just so blatantly familiar and clearcut as rape.

it's one of those things that i just can't wrap my head around because it has not been resolved, or really addressed with persephone being in charge of her own healing. it keeps getting thrown in as a kind of hurdle for people to cross, and apollo has never been taken to task for it, punished for it, faced any splash back. even when daphne finds out what he did, she's immediately put into the position of running for her life, and then when she's finally free she just ... doesn't tell anyone?

what's even more concerning is that we see numerous male characters in the text play fast and loose with consent, and rachel really wavers on whether it's bad or not. ares keeps hitting on persephone when she clearly doesn't like it, and he usually ends up getting the narrative coming down on him; zeus lies to demeter to trick her and that gets handwaved away to make room for the bad blood between demeter and hades. hades grooms persephone and then initiates sex when she's in the middle of a bad mental health spiral (obviously just my interpretation of it but i viewed a lot of that scene as persephone having an anxiety attack, and regardless of whether that's canon or not, she's definitely not in the right space for hades to initiate some weird ass daddy dom routine.) so rachel seems to understand what consent is to some degree, but the issue of consent disappears depending on who is asking for it. rachel makes it clear that hades is totally fine and doing the right thing for persephone, whereas if we saw zeus doing that same thing to hera, the narrative would definitively label zeus bad. so whether rachel always intended that scene to be rape, or figured it out later, i think the big question is: why aren't all the characters held to the same standard of consent, and why are so many female characters constantly the victim of men who do not ask?

the structure in mac and dennis break up

this is gonna be a short post tbh, I just rewatched the episode and I have a couple of thoughts.

if you need a refresher on what I think the structure is in general, I talk about it here.

I think Mac and Dennis Break Up shows us an example of Mac and Dennis (and Charlie and Frank) working properly in regards to the structure, let me explain why:

First... I don't think there's a need for me to describe the plot of the episode, we all know.

What I want to focus on, is that at one point Mac moves in with Frank and Charlie, and starts bringing his way of life to them.

At first, Frank is thrilled.

"I could use a little structure in my life here." he says.

This reminds me of dialogue from Carries a Corpse.

"Nobody admit this to Mac, but... I feel like he was carrying a ton of weight."

"That would be another one of his annoying identities... the man who could carry stuff."

He's been shown carrying Dennis, on top of generally being inclined to micromanage, take care of others so they're safe, and make decisions or at least demand to be consulted in them (like which movie to watch on movie night).

That's when Mac works best, so I assume that Mac generally brings structure (or is a man of action, as he describes it).

Later on, we see Mac take this too far, and Frank doesn't like it anymore. To me, this is because what this episode tells us is that Charlie and Frank don't work well with a set structure, the way that Mac provides. They're more free.

I think this reading is important because it shows me why The Gang Gets Romantic fundamentally fails in its objective (not as an episode god forbid, I mean in the narrative, especially for Mac and Dennis).

It applies the romcom structure to Charlie and Frank, while it doesn't to Mac and Dennis, when it should be the opposite. Throughout the episode we see that Mac and Dennis keep fitting the tropes to the romcom structure, but they refuse to follow it, and thus it crumbles. It can't work.

Here's another thing.

Dennis' back broke in the S15 finale.

That is funny, yes, but what does this mean when I say that Mac is the (his) structure, then?

Well... Carries a Corpse implies that Mac was carrying most of the weight of the corpse, and the corpse is meant to be the show... and most show meta is basically the same as Dennis meta (most meta lines seem to relate to him, whether the fact he left for north dakota and came back, or the fact he's a dad, being between life and death, breaking his back aka the structure, and so on), as I have discussed better in my other post.

Point being, Mac carries Dennis. That's what he's meant to do, and what he does best in their relationship.

This makes me think of another recent scene that I think is emblematic of their dynamic... but in an interesting way.

So, in 2020: a Year in Review, Mac and Dennis work together on a song.

They seem to be in harmony, but eventually start disagreeing and stop altogether to focus on something else. Why?

Because Dennis is working on the backup vocals, and Mac is working on the words. Which means their roles are reversed. Mac is supposed to be carrying the song, like the wind beneath his wings that he is, and Dennis, like the man of words that he is, should be responsible for the lyrics. They're doing each other's job, which means any harmony they reach is still bound to crack a bit the moment the song doesn't work for them.

Their seating position on their sofa reflects this.

Compare it to Mac and Dennis Break Up, which is supposed to be our ideal.

They're in each other's places, in 2020.

This isn't new, they've been sitting in each other's places ever since Break Up. Mac was sitting in Dennis' place in MFHP, Dennis was sitting in Mac's place in Gets Romantic.

So tl;dr... Mac and Dennis work well under structure, when Mac is the one to bring it and carry Dennis. They fit a proper couple structure after all. Charlie and Frank don't work as well under structure, since their relationship is more unique and doesn't quite abide by normal rules because of that.

This does bring me to one last consideration though...

They're back in their right spots, in season 16! Only problem is... couch is different. I would argue an inflatable couch doesn't offer the same amount of support (structure) that a normal one would...

Now that Dennis' structural essence broke, is he gonna feel what it's like when Mac is absent?

Perhaps this is why in Cursed we get Mac as the lucky one while the others as so unlucky they start to believe they're cursed (according to the synopsis...).

So the whole gang needs Mac?

Well...

In Goes To Hell pt2, when they build the human pyramid, it's both Mac and Dennis that end up at the bottom, as its structure.

So maybe... Dennis needs Mac as his structure, and the gang needs them to be in sync so they can both, together, support them (or shut the hell up about it, as both madbu and s15 would argue). Maybe this realization could be what brings the gang to work together in order to get them together. But that's getting into just speculation so imma end it here.

I like these thoughts though... Mac and Dennis being the foundation, the structure of the whole thing :)

hm hm hm i feel like this will be really interesting to read with the knowledge of korra and how that effected her instead.... because korra (from my limited knowledge so i could be talking out my ass here) knew she was the avatar at an early age and DID get that community. she had katara and her parents, she had her mentors, she was isolated from the real world during so and perfected the elements other than air (which i kinda recall her struggling with and how its the opposite element of earth so im excited to see if those kinda play out :3) and she was more eager to be the avatar and the excitement and significance it brought (which was a bit clouded by her being sheltered but also would have been expected more before the war impacted things)

i also remember matty saying kyoshi struggled with earth bending (which im super excited to get to and see/see her journey and how it will differ) but!!! i just think its really fun how theyre kinda off the bat setting up this expectation and new grounding for readers who have a past grasp of the avatar universe. even as someone who isnt super familiar with the lore, i know enough to recognize that oh! thats something new!! so just kudos to the writer(s?) for just setting this up to be something very different and in a natural way :3

im such a good author I know so many details ummmm here is an insert from some point in RIA (I think this was going to be a POV from Hakoda and his men talking and I decided it was a waste of word count. sorry hakoda)

“Don’t you think that is a little… <i>extreme</i> Gilak?”

“Not as extreme as the <i>son</i> of the Fire Lord living and breathing in our camp!”

Hakoda felt the specific vein in his forehead thumping against his wrinkled skin that was trying its best to keep it contained. He could feel a headache coming forward the longer they discussed what to do about the situation that Sokka brought to his attention… and so far, they had not one tangible idea.

“Gilak, I have already told you, we can not kill him.”

“I know sir, your son is buddies with him, and we can’t upset Sokka.”

Hakoda shot the larger man a stern look, and he quickly retracted his words.

“I know why we can’t kill him. I just think it would be the simplest solution in this situation.”

Bato jumped to Hakoda’s defense, like he always did.

“This is not a simple situation, so it will not have a simple solution. I think we should speak to Morrak and see what he learned about the boy before we make any decisions. If we kill the Prince of the Fire Nation while he is severely injured and being non threatening we will look like the savages the rest of the world calls us. We have to handle this delicately, like Hakoda said, Sokka trusted us enough to tell us who he is when he could have easily lied. Which means we need to respect that trust and handle it delicately.”

Hakoda cleared his throat, earning the attention from both his men.

“So it is decided. I will talk to Morrak and once I get more information, I will meet back with you both and we can discuss our options at that point.”

“Yes sir.”

“Yes Chief.”

Hakoda was happy when they left his tent, freeing up the stifled air that seemed to stop moving the moment the conversation began. Hakoda felt an intense guilt building from betraying his son’s trust and sharing his friend's identity with the other men… Haoda knew it was the wisest decision for him to make as the Chief of the Southern Water Tribe, but it wasn’t helping him be the best dad to his son… Something he was still struggling with every passing moment.

Even now… Hakoda left his son alone in the healer’s tent with the boy he just recently discovered was the Prince of the Fire Nation… A boy bred into fire and violence. Sokka seemed to trust him, which gave Hakoda a tiny bit of hope that maybe there was something good in this boy… But that tiny feeling was smothered by the rest of the overwhelming amount of mistrust and worry he had when he looked at the golden eyed boy who glared at him from the moment he opened his eyes.

Hakoda rubbed his forehead, digging his thumb into his temple in an attempt to push back the stress vein. He needed to speak to Morrak, and after that… He would make a decision on what was the best next step he could make. He needed to protect his tribe and his son, that was his main concern right now… and right now… Sokka was tied to this fire bender in a way that made Hakoda nervous.

Turning towards the entrance of his tent, Hakoda decided not to overthink this situation a minute longer and go find Morrak so they could talk…

Each time Hakoda thought about all the things he didn’t know, or wasn’t understanding, he felt the weight of his decision growing heavier and heavier. If Hakoda didn’t figure out what to do soon, he was going to be crushed and then Sokka would be on his own…

Hakoda couldn’t fail his son again, he had to make the right decision

Psst… Dad.”

Hakoda frowned in his sleep, caught in the middle of a dream and the reality that awaited him on the other side.

“Dad… Wake up.”

Hakoda opened his eyes and saw Sokka staring down at him.

“Son? What are you doing in my tent in the middle of the night? Are you ok?”

Hakoda sat up and rubbed his eyes, trying to see through the darkness he was startled when a tiny flame broke through the void and gave clarity to the room.

Zuko was standing behind Sokka who was kneeling next to Hakoda’s bed, and the Water Tribe man felt a mixture of conflicted feelings. He was instantly happy that Zuko had come back for Sokka, but the dred that followed swallowed any joy he had…. Zuko couldn’t be here. If Quon found him… They would all be in trouble.

“I’m fine… Zuko came back. He… We… Ummm… We are leaving.”

Hakoda thought he would be devastated the day his son told him he was leaving again, so sure that his world would bottom out and Hakoda would feel like he was falling into despair. But when he looked at Sokka, and he thought back to the talk they had about his feelings for the fire bender, Hakoda knew that there was nothing he could say to change his son’s decision.

Just like Hakoda had allowed Katara to leave, he had to do the same with Sokka. His children didn’t belong to him anymore, they were grown and they were bonded to people who they were loyal to… And Hakoda was proud of them. It was a monumental thing to find someone you loved, and staying loyal to them was what kept that relationship strong…. Even if Hakoda didn’t love the idea of Sokka choosing a fire bending boy, he wouldn’t stop him from being loyal to his love.

“I understand, son. Allow me to put on my pants and I will help you two escape.”

Zuko spoke up, “I don’t think that will be necessary. The uhh… The helping us… Not the uhh… The pants.”

Hakoda smirked and Sokka smacked his own forehead. No wonder the boy refrained from using words.

“I would like to make sure you two make it out ok. Is that a problem?”

Zuko seemed to dislike the idea, but Sokka gave him a pleading look that had a splash of assertiveness, which seemed to be their typical dynamic. Now that Hakoda was aware of the romantic nature between the boys it was easier to disfer their interactions.

Hakoda slipped on his pants and slid on his boots, making sure he secured his hunting knife inside. He couldn’t grab any other weapons just in case they were caught, Hakoda couldn’t risk looking like he was prepared for a fight. If they were caught, they would need to make sure that whatever words made up their excuse were good enough to fool whoever found them.

As long as it wasn’t Quon, they might have a chance

RIP Shen, I never realized how fucking funny you and Zuko were until you died. I think this was when they were all sharing intel idk… but Zukos an asshole and I love it. (he and Sokka were sooooo hostile during the SWT arc)

“Nothing… Just…. Fucking drop it. How about Zuko and I switch seats and I will come over and help you with the Fire Nation cruiser information. Bato and Zuko can, I don’t know… Play their tile game or whatever.”

“Fine with me. I fucking love games.” Zuko mumbled as he stood up.

Shen watched with wide eyes, not saying a word, and Hakoda could honestly say he had no words to add to the tension either.

“Good!” Sokka stood up as well and made sure to bump his friend’s shoulder as they switched seats. The fire bender glanced back and Hakoda wondered if he was going to shove Sokka in the back but he didn’t reciprocate the hostile gesture and instead he flopped down next to Bato and crossed his arms with his brow narrowed deep into the center of his face.

Shen leaned back when Sokka came to sit down next to him, and Sokka glanced over at him and scoffed.

“Don’t be dramatic. Let’s just get this thing fucking over with so we can be done here.”

“Whatever you say.” Shen replied as Sokka aggressively organized the parchment and prepared to draw out Shen’s cruiser.

Hakoda watched as Sokka’s anger melted when Shen began to explain what it was like being a soldier stationed on Fire Nation cruiser. He told them about -

ive always really liked picking apart different animation styles, and how things are done, but if you know me you know my favorite thing to look at is expressions. more specifically, eyes. they convey so much emotion its actually insane, and the different ways people draw them?? omomomohmomhonohn

so here have a post about my favorite ways that animes have drawn eyes (ft. tokyo ghoul, demon slayer, bungou stray dogs, and chainsaw man)

TOKYO GHOUL RAHHHHH no one does horror like them!!! this is so evident so early on in the scene where kaneki is trying to eat food after his stay in the hospital, and the terror of not being able to eat human food is finally setting in

and of course, we can't forget when he went outside for the first time after the accident

yeahhh. tokyo ghoul absolutely loves to white out the eyes, not entirely, but they make the pupils so small and their eyes HUGE. the TERROR that they portray is amazinggggg

demon slayer has the prettiest eyyesss!!!!!

ive always absolutely loved how they draw their eyes. its so colorful, so detailed!! the demon eyes are my favorite, especially the demons with numbers scratched into them.

i mean COME ONNNN, the color??? also, another early on show, when tanjiros family died and he came home to find out. the expressio they drew for him??? phenominal.

demon slayer likes to scrunch up the nose, and really throws in the mouth and the eyebrows too, while tokyo ghoul is almost entirely focused on the eyes (also the absolute peak voice acting omg)

oooo yess bungou stray dogs a personal favorite of mine now obviously every bsd fan knows that bsd loves to give us big fishbowl eyes during serious scenes

(the chuuya one is a personal favorite of mine but, i digress) despite how many jokes i make about this angle, i actually really like it. not only does it give bsd something significant that you can associate it with, but i think it does a really good job of making everything... a little unsettling especially in lucy's scene where shes describing them getting captured for the rest of their lives, but if they try to leave they'll forget everything, including their friends. and shes getting so much joy out of it, its meant to be a scary scene! and the fishbowl just adds that disturbance, this uncomfortableness bc atsushi is fucking going through it LMAO of course i have to talk about how they draw their eyes. the diamond shape is something ive always loved, with a color that somehow fits so well.

now FINALLY chainsaw man (i just started watching this show bear WITH ME)

i LOVE how csm draws their eyes. their so? detailed? they draw the little bits of the eyes that most animes dont

the way they draw makima's eyes is a personal favorite. i know from spoilers (rip) that she isnt quite human, and the way they draw her pupils different from everyone elses, with extra rings and them being an uncharacteristic bright color. the way they draw her eyes almost reminds me of a cat? my favorite thing tho, is the fact that they draw that little thing on the end that most people forget (the tear duct!!) it just makes them look so real, and when you get as close up to their eyes as you do in the anime, it almost makes you feel a bit uncomfortable, which is exactly what theyre going for considering the nature of the anime

he just looks so shocked. he fully believed he had died. he would forever starve, forever weighed down by his fathers debt. and all of a sudden, hes free, and none of it feels real.

(i could literally talk about this for hours god someone stop me)

so hear me out. we still have guy and pepper. we get the two of them now and then we get poddpapang for GMMTV 2025. on god we’re gonna complete that quadrangulation of older underrated actors stuck in side roles who deserve to have main ones and to kiss more men until we get the ultimate poly relationship of my hope and dreams

i also think that after the success of both i feel you linger in the air and the sign, GMMTV will actually give us a historical BL for sure, which i think could go to earthmix or forcebook, and possibly a series with different jobs other than office ones and doctors or chefs, which i hope will go to aouboom. and at this point im pretty sure we’re getting that mafia series with p’jojo and firstkhao, so hopefully we will get more variety this time

ALSO THE WOMEN!!!!!!!!!!! IM BETTING EVERYTHING ON THE WOMEN IM SELLING MY SOUL FOR THE WOMEN WE’RE GONNA GET MORE THAN ONE GL AND THAT’S FINAL!!!!!!!!!!!!

but i do understand feeling frustrated tbh. this really is NOT how i expected part 2 to go, and only yesterday i was sitting here wondering if i should just leave for a while, but remembering why i was even drawn to BLs in the first place kinda helped me with it. i think in the end the best thing we can do is doing what makes us feel better, and if you have to step back from this genre for a while then that's completely understandable, although im still hoping we're gonna get something good that we can look forward to!!!!!!
