NR!Borough Leaders!

Howdy big kids! Here’s the semi-official designs for the Newsies Rewritten Borough leaders! I wanted to draw them for a while now! These are also F2U designs as long credit is given to this account or to @flinttflakes as I will occasionally draw something there.

More info under the cut!

As each borough post mentioned, newsies color themselves by borough to show solidarity and pride of where they’re from! Manhattan is blue, Staten Island is green, Queens is yellow, Bronx is orange, and Brooklyn is red! Anyways, about the leaders:

Jack “Cowboy” Kelly: Jack’s design was based off Herrick’s Highschool’s Jack Kelly, played by Tristan Surajbali (he was so good. I love him to bits.) Gave him the icon blue shirt mixed with the OG Jack Kelly red handkerchief around the neck and the cowboy hat.

Cora “Aussie” Foster: Aussie is an oc by sundaymorningtv on tumblr. Not having a description from them, I just envisioned Aussie being a redhead with curly hair and it looks pretty good!

Georgina “Georgie”: Georgie truly belongs to olitheheadphoneskid23. As Georgina has a Greek origin, I went with a Greek appearance and also gave her the waistcloths to kind of show it.

Julian “Smalls” Hunt: Smalls is based on Julian DeGuzman from the live broadway recording, so he is Filipino. His outfit changed the most as I wanted it to be more aligned with the Bronx’ orange color and different from Georgie’s yellow.

Salvatore “Spot” Conlon: Spot’s designed is based on Tommy Bracco and Gabriel Damon for the most part, you can’t really tell there was a Bracco influence on Spot as he’s wearing the OG Spot’s clothes but once I get close up shots it should look more accurate!

6. common headcanons you love?

spot is always ridiculously short to me, no matter the iteration. i know everyone who's ever played spot is taller than me, i don't care. and race is always a dancer to me no matter what. especially in uksies. we need more 'hockey girl loves drama boy' type sprace stuff.

8. common headcanons you hate?

anything that alters the delancey's canonical behaviour. there are so many great fanon backstories for the delancey's that rule SO MUCH and i want to incorporate that into the stick season au, but as much as i think humanizing the delancey's is cool, more often than not i see people saying 'oh morris didn't want to hurt crutchie, he HAD to do it' 'oh oscar only does what he does to protect his baby brother' 'oh the delancey's helped newsies escape the refuge and take little kids to the lodging houses' or whatever the fuck and that's just NOT the delancey's. everything they do in canon, they do in canon. that's them. that's what you get. you can add nuance to that, but you can't rewrite it. you're just making an OC at that point.

btw did yall know jupes heard the newsies soundtrack in passing today and decided to message me about it. that's my claim to pavlovian fame.

First Fic - God, I think my first fic was some spin off of a teenage spy series on wattpad *shudders* but my first ao3 fic was a silly little abandoned newsies fic which was. Interesting. I will not link it but its up for archive purposes, I owe @radioactivepigeons a lot for the encouragement, not sure if I would be still writing now if it wasn't for that kindness :)

Latest Fic - is Queer Eye-Eye Captain! Which is an ofmd queer eye au and I will link it because it took me a year to write and I think its very fun. Its my first 'long fic' (ie. Its over like,, 2K) and it took a lot of effort to actually finish it instead of getting excited, posting it, and abandoning it 😅

Fic in a Fandom I Only Wrote Once For - there are a couple but I think we'll go with There's No Such Thing as Stupid Pain which is a little startrek disco one I wrote after a night shift when I hurt from lifting a patient weird. I adore startrek discovery but I've just never written anything else for it yk?

Favourite Fic in the Fandom I Wrote Most For - are any of us surprised that its newsies after my train wreck of a brain (and bank account) last year? I think my favourite is probably Go to Bed just because its cute and I like the UK Davey/Crutchie dynamic, with an honourable mention to Hear Her Voice and Hear it Still which isn't that well written but I love the concept for.

Fic I Wish More People Read - ooh hard one, maybe I am to See to it That I Do Not Lose You which was for the fic exchange, just because I wrote and rewrite it So. Many. Times.

Fic I Agonised Over the Most - It is what it is because it's an excerpt of a much larger fic sitting planned out in my wips that I really want to write but idk if it will ever happen. Shout out to Build a Problem which I accidentally abandoned bc it started sounding too much like something I would write in high school and it needs serious revisions

Fic that Sprang Fully Formed - Babywipe Blues it's only little but it practically wrote itself, only took me 10 minutes. Amazing what procrastination can do.

And a Work I'm Proud of - Queer Eye-Eye Captain! Again just because I'm loving it now and also You're Safe Now because even though I don't love how it was written now, someone liked it enough to translate it into French which I think is very cool :)

🍄 (how did you get into writing fanfiction?)

This has...three answers, depending on how far back you want to go.

Answer 1: The first fanfiction I wrote was a cursed but hilarious Shakespeare mega-crossover that I've contemplated posting here based on a writing prompt on a sophomore year English final. I then proceeded to not write any more fanfiction (except for my Broadchurch-inspired poetry in creative writing), until...

Answer 2: At the beginning of the pandemic, I was rewatching Parks and Rec and was curious how, at one point, Ben knew about Leslie's favorite spot in City Hall. I wrote a short one-shot with my thoughts, made an AO3 account to post it, and thought I'd never use the account to post anything else, until...

Answer 3: A few months after I first watched Newsies, I thought I could fit the Newsies characters into a Much Ado About Nothing retelling pretty well--Javid as Ben and Bea, Spot and Race as Claudio and Hero, Katherine as Don Pedro, etc. My irl friend encouraged me to write it and helped with some plot stuff (Jack dressing up as Rapunzel was her idea if I remember correctly). I thought I wouldn't write anything else after that, but then I had ideas for one-shots and was kind of in a bad place mentally, so I kept going, and now here I am >140k words into the Bachelorette AU! What a time!

❄ (What's your dream theme/plot for a fic, and who would write it best?)

I thought about this in the shower, and I think I'd like to see a whodunit/murder mystery fic, which seems like the sort of thing @jack-kellys would be good at. I know I certainly would not be up to writing a proper murder mystery though (despite taking an entire English class on detective fiction in high school).

🌿 (give some advice on writer's block and low creativity)

I know I maintain the illusion of avoiding writer's block by having a semi-regular posting schedule for the Bachelorette AU, but I am very much not immune to writer's block. Here are some things I do, with the caveat that this is just my experience and my methods do not work for everyone.

If the block is coming from feeling like I'm not sure what I'm doing in the next few scenes, I'll take a bit to figure out and write down what the next few scenes will be. These won't be super detailed, but I'll sometimes specify the POV character and usually say "xyz happens." For example, right now I have notes in my bachelorette document about who's going in the hot seat when, as well as the scenes I want to have take place after the men tell all filming wraps.

If I'm just overwhelmed, I'll take a little longer and write a list of things, in order, that need to happen in a chapter (this is what I did for each chapter for the bachelorette au). In the Much Ado adaptation, I wrote down each scene number from the play and decided which POV(s) each scene would have and in what order, which served as a reminder of what each scene focused on.

If it's just that the words won't come, I look back over what I've read, go read a book, or I just sort of force myself to plod along (with the exception of these past couple weeks, where I've been really tired from work and haven't had much time to sit down and designate Writing Time). Brute-forcing isn't for everyone, but when I'm doing that, I try not to delete what I've written and I try not to think about whether it's good, since if I don't like the scene I can go back and edit or rewrite it later. I also do sprints sometimes.

After yet another abandoned novel attempt in 2022, I never skip ahead to the scene I really want to write. I'll write down single lines or bits of dialogue, but that's it. If I skip ahead, it makes it way harder to finish the fic.

Random question, is there any fanfic that you would either say is your favorite or has simply adhered itself to your brain and refused to let go?

Huh, that's a great question. The sort of thing that makes me wish I kept better track of the fics I liked or maintained a bookmark system or something. I will forgo mentioning any of the fics that adhered to my brain in a bad way, though those are the ones that are longest lasting in my head honestly. due to the ocd.

Well, hm. Ok, the Merlin at Hogwarts series by stellaisnotamermaid comes to mind. While the author herself has expressed that JKR's bigotry and use of power has soured even her on the series, the longfic of it and the full series recreation was inspiring to me. It encouraged me to write for the BBC Merlin fandom, and I have kept internet friends from that fandom to this day.

Similarly - and I cannot find a link nor can I remember the title, sorry to say - this one fanfic that had such a grip on me back when I was just a middle schooler was this Avatar: the Last Airbender longfic series rewrite in which, after Aang fails to stop Ozai and is sent back to the beginning of his journey but in a roleswapped alternate universe. At that point in my life, I thought fanfic was just stupid and shameful and weird, but reading someone be like, "Ok but what would Katara be like if she were in Azula's shoes?" had me enthralled and changed my life in that way. (For the worse? Who knows. You decide.)

Oh, and then even after I had accepted that fanfic wasn't all bad, I still had a lot of misgivings about fics that were centered just around shipping. Which is probably why it was so easy for a simple 5 + 1 modern AU Javid (Newsies) fic, my body when it is with yours, to grab my heart and make it pound out of my chest. "David kisses him back," was enough to murder me back then.

Batnesia and QUARANTINED: RED ROBIN’S TIK TOK ACCOUNT share a place in my heart not strictly just for the fics themselves but for how goddamn collaborative the batfam fandom seemed to get during quarantine. It was a special time of coping through crackfic

I really should start keeping notes... Become one of those people who can give recs out of nowhere. Or at least the kind of person who bookmarks the fics they like jesus

(ironically the character i tend to be the most nervous with this is parker. who has literally been dead for the entire story. /lh)

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

can be great! if proper research is done. i've never personally done it, and i don't think my knowledge of greek is strong enough/i would have to absolutely fight for my life to have it come up naturally between my characters i think lol

published fandom, newsies. in general it was probably warrior cats

20. Favorite fic you've written?

once again don't want to give the same answer i have in the past so, i actually really enjoyed i got a memory of blood. the fics i write in the span of a day naturally tend to be messier, a bit rushed, etc but i just think johnparker is an incredibly compelling dynamic especially in the cbau

i mean authors right off the bat are @thefactsofthematter and @we-are-inevitable with kath having fics like the fandom famous cake fic, too many colors, the olympic au, an an immortal jack fic im in love with. jac’s got the deep in the forest au which is SO cool, he also has the only soulmate fic i’ve ever liked, a fantastic rewrite of the jack/kath penthouse scene (as do i hehe), and the we said that the last time-verse which is stellar asf. and @roideny has a camp half-blood au i would perhaps maim and kill for

@wekiaam is carrying the fandom by still making newsies clips into short and brilliant animatics and @quarttetta is an artist i’ve watched grow from talented to EXTREMELY talented. fandom staples right here

spromeo i believe in so much. also blush is getting to be a rarer pair in that these two just aren’t in a lot of fics anymore which is!! boo!!!! write them, they are the originals!!

💭: headcanons?

i know this is kind of a wider hc by now but davey plays piano… davey really plays piano. it’s a form of expression rooted in experience and different levels of knowledge and it just makes sense that that would be the most comfortable way to get his feelings out— in a way only he can deeply decipher, and in a way only he can perform, and no one else can replicate.

jack is the kind of indecisive person to pick the same thing over and over so he doesn’t have to go through choosing something new, which is… kind of his plot in newsies anyway (at every single turn he picks those he cares about over his own wants and needs) but it also is true for his coffee orders. and the exact shade of blue his favorite color is. and the way he walks back to his apartment. he’s spontaneous when it comes to things involving imagination, but when it comes to real life decisions. oh boy.

i think it’d be super cool if charlie is the one who moves out to santa fe and not jack. bc in a way it is their dream together and charlie’s the only other person in the show besides jack to have santa fe melodies in a song… and it isn’t charlie who says “what’s santa fe got that new york ain’t”, charlie only says what new york does have. like he doesn’t compare them. idk it’s just interesting and i think charlie should get to have his own individual adventure out there since jack clearly cannot function without those he cares about nearby.

Phil if you ever need fic recs, I can probably grab some stuff :3 I've got a few newsies fics (mostly high school aus because whenever I enter a new fandom that's the first AU i'll always read to test the waters and see how the fic writers work), couple of silly mcyt fics, a great fnaf series that doesn't really need any knowledge of the lore (silly drabbles about a character dunking on karens that turns into an actual plot), and a TMA fic that uh. is currently 304 chapters, updated daily, has the most relationship anarchy i've ever seen in a single fic, and is mostly a chatfic. yay chaotic rewrites!! (Tim writes fanfic about Elias).
