Jake Donaghue is the protagonist of which 1954 book, the first published novel by Iris Murdoch?
Iris Murdoch's first published novel 'Under the Net' (1954) is set in London and tells the story of a struggling young writer called Jake Donaghue. It is one of Murdoch's most popular novels, and in 2005, was chosen by 'Time' magazine as one of the best English-language novels since 1923.
Jake is a writer and translator in his early thirties who wishes to improve his situation and make amends with an old philosopher. Finding himself homeless, Jake tracks down his ex-girlfriend, Anna, and meets his distant cousin Peter O'Finney "Finn", who leads Jake on many adventures, including kidnapping a dog and starting a riot. Meanwhile, Jake attempts to put into practice the absurd philosophies of his former acquaintance.
Dame Jean Iris Murdoch (1919-1999) was an Irish-born author of novels about good and evil, sexual relationships, and the power of the unconscious. Some of her memorable books include 'The Black Prince' and 'The Sea, the Sea', both of which contain themes of eroticism and love. In 1987, she was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE). She passed away at age seventy-nine due to Alzheimer's disease in Oxfordshire, England.
Murdoch dedicated 'Under the Net' to the French novelist Raymond Queneau (1903-76), whose book 'Pierrot mon ami' (My Friend Pierrot) is mentioned in the story.
