I didn’t even know the second week of September was the Philippines’ National Suicide Prevention Week, and incidentally I’ve manage to read two books that offered a glimpse into mental illness, depression and suicide. • In Ghost of a Feeling, junior medical intern Cris is saved from ending it all when a “ghost”, Emilio (it’s Nathan, really),talks to her and spends some time with her on the rooftop of her apartment. He gains her trust, not only in him, but also in herself, and in the idea that things will get better. In Sounds Like Summer, Lux sets on to a weekend music festival to forget a reality she couldn’t control. There she meets fun and energetic Micah, and she not only finds a way to forget, but also finds something to always remember. • I will have to do separate reviews of each book sometime in the following days (when I’m less emotional and more Proper Thinking) but I loved both of these books not only bec of the romance, not just bec of the nuanced portrayal of depressed and suicidal characters, but also in the way these issues are addressed. These books are respectful in dealing with a sensitive topic but it doesn’t downplay the struggle of self-harm and suicide. They tell them as it is, balances it with enough fluff and wit, and then it ultimately gives hope. • At least six individuals commit suicide every day in the country, government data suggests, and the stigma around mental illness in general worsens the situation. If more people talk about it, hopefully more people will actively choose to seek help. Cris and Lux are people of fiction, but their stories are the reality for a lot of Filipinos. Please seek help. The world is a better place with you in it. . . . . . #bookstagram #bibliophile #booknerdPH #bookworm #instabooks #bookish #bookishfeature #bookcommunity #alwaysreading #bookstagramersPH #IGreads #selfpublishing #indiepublishing #romanceclass #NationalSuicidePreventionWeek #mentalillness #suicideprevention #depression #GhostOfAFeeling #SoundsLikeSummer #readlocalPH #diversebooks #diversereads #kindlebooks #SparkNA (at Philippines) https://www.instagram.com/p/BntKZrlF4a0/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=109n885efvfaf

Today I want to talk about a part of depression that doesn't get talked about much or acknowledged, let alone understood by those without it. How difficult it can be to do simple tasks, things that someone who doesn't have depression won't find to be an impossible task. This is my room and this is after I've already started to clean some, the mountain of soda cans that used to litter my table, behind my bed and floor are gone along with the piles of dirty clothes. I've thrown away 2 full trash bags of trash and burned a pile of junk mail, with another pile forming in the fire place. I've been able to only clean in 10 minute increments before I get too overwhelmed. It's been 2 weeks since I started to try and clean and I've barely done anything. This is a task that is like climbing Everest and it will take time to finish. I have been gotten after for months by my dad to get it clean and have been unable to do so. Sometimes managing to pick up cups and such but nothing major and everytime he heckled me it made the task seem that much more daunting. You know what has helped though? One of my main supports, he encourages me, tells me he knows I can do it, let's me know it's okay if all I did was get rid of all of the soda cans or the dirty laundry. And he still does, he's there to remind me that even the smallest progress is still progress towards my goal. He's been there to remind me of that every step whether it's with my room or progress with therapy, or with managing my ptsd or depression. And that's the difference between having one person knock you down and yell at you until you break down over the task in front of you and the other who builds you up and gives you the confidence and let's you know it's okay to take your time to get it done. #nationalsuicidepreventionmonth #nationalsuicidepreventionweek #suicide #depression #ptsd #ptsdawareness #depressionawareness #suicideawareness #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #suicidesurvivor #cleaning #room #onestepatatime #supportsystem #buildingpeopleup #encouragement https://www.instagram.com/p/Bnr2TMLBkJe/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1q6xvizs6vrdr

Life is better with you here ❤️ Today I am dedicating this post to #nationalsuicidepreventionmonth and #nationalsuicidepreventionweek - this is a topic that is heavy on my heart, especially as there was a tragic child suicide this week locally. This is incredibly heartbreaking and I think helping raise funds for programs that go into our schools and help children is exactly what we need right now! I have been supporting the efforts by this wonderful organization L.E.A.D (Law Enforcement Against Drugs & Violence) to bring awareness, as well as donations to fund this program. If you or anyone you know would like to donate to this incredible non-profit, please visit their website at www.leadrugs.org If you or your child needs help right away, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255), call 911, or take your child to the nearest crisis center or emergency department. Other helpful resources include: TEXT the Crisis Text Line, a free, 24/7 support for those in crisis. TEXT 741741 from anywhere in the USA to text with a trained Crisis Counselor. Your life matters. ❤️ (at LEAD - Law Enforcement Against Drugs and Violence) https://www.instagram.com/p/CTrIV_dLwra/?utm_medium=tumblr

This week is #nationalsuicidepreventionweek. I feel very passionate about spreading awareness of this as I have personally struggled with suicidal thoughts and have had to intervene when a good friend attempted it. Please look for these warning signs in someone who you think may be experiencing these thoughts, offer non-judgmental ears to listen with, and guide them towards helpful resources such as the National Suicide Helpline, @twloha, @rainn, @trevorproject, or any other mental health organizations or groups. I know it's hard to stay positive in these trying times, but we will overcome; we are going to come out of this united and stronger than we were before. YOU MATTER, your story matters, and you are here for a reason. Don't let anyone try to tell you otherwise. 💞 #nationalsuicidepreventionweek #mentalhealth #towriteloveonherarms #twloha #worthlivingfor https://www.instagram.com/p/CE2_hLLD5cy/?igshid=s2kpuxqrunvj

This is beautiful. She is beautiful. Being honest and real is beautiful. Mental illness is nothing to be ashamed of. And it isn't something you should have to struggle with alone. ❤️ #Repost @mad_for_madz ・・・ ******Edit and clarification****** This post is to continue the discourse against negative stigma that comes with mental health and the conversation around it. This is NOT, I repeat NOT about me or my illness, but instead I am using my illness as a way to promote talking about mental health and mental health awareness!!! Plz do not comment about me or my illness here--try to use this as a medium to safely talk about mental health!!!! 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤 I usually post something every day during #NationalSuicidePreventionWeek but I've been falling asleep at 5PM every night, and have not had the time during the day to post. Ironically, or not so ironically, this week has been the toughest one since my last attempt. I had a crazy crying spell tonight, and decided to take a bunch of selfies in the same way I do when I've just finished my makeup for a night out. This is me: pure, raw, scared as hell--but it's also not all of me, because the real me wants and needs to #STAY. My question for you tonight is, how would you feel, if instead of reading the details in the above paragraph, you read about me complaining about a head cold, a fever, chest pain, my digestive disease, a friend's cancer diagnosis, an open wound... We need to start talking about depression and suicide and ALL mental illness and get rid of the stigma. It starts with me and it starts with you. #TalkAboutIt I will stay tonight because I have a really important meeting tomorrow about a student who needs me to advocate for him. Tomorrow is a new day, and I am confident I will feel 100000x better than I do right now. You are loved. You are wanted. Thank you for loving and wanting me 🖤 #allthebrightplaces #youareenough #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthmatters #youarewanted

Do you look at the world differently? ⠀⠀ Do you feel things more intensely? I do too. ⠀⠀ This week was national Suicide prevention week. When I think about what that means, I think about the loved one that I lost this year... that we all lost, to suicide. When we are the type of person who feels things so deeply and purely, when no numbing agent can dampen the truth of what we’re experiencing, when the beauty of our humanity is so painful that there doesn’t seem to be any other escape... life and living it can feel unbearable and sometimes even pointless. ⠀⠀ For people like these, who feel and notice... our society don’t create space. We create shame and guilt and judgement. Where is the safe haven for the sensitive souls? Where is the understanding, empathy, compassion, encouragement? ⠀⠀ There is no such thing as fearless. Only brave or scared. Both of these deserve love and safety. Both of these deserve acknowledgement and compassion. Both of these deserve acceptance. ⠀⠀ But there is hope... these kind of safe places and people exist in all of us, who are courageous enough to sit and listen. To notice and pay attention to the person in front of us who is hurting. ⠀⠀ We’re ALL dealing with shit, and we’re worthy of the feelings that go along with it. ⠀⠀ If there is anything that I have learned in the past 4 months is that, we can all do a much better job at listening. Loving. Understanding. ⠀⠀ It’s no one’s job to save anyone, but if we’re all in this together... let’s act like it. ⠀⠀ #authentic #love #purpose #aligned #truth #openness #vulnerability #empowered #nationalsuicidepreventionweek #ipreview via @preview.app https://www.instagram.com/p/B2YXzMqpNCW/?igshid=1013wd8tdbcb3
